Saturday morning. Finally, the week's over. You wake up at about 10, stretch, and sit up.

Then it hits you. There's going to be something happening this weekend, and you have no idea what. Some sort of TV show.

Ah, well, can't work on an empty stomach. You roll out of bed, and wonder what to have for breakfast.

>Bacon. Bacon is good.
>Cereal. Easy to think about.
>Toast with something on it. Honey, maybe. The golden syrup was good too.
>Write-in.

Also, polite mod request, I guess.

If you do ban me, can you ban me for long enough that I can appeal it, so that I can explain why the source material is completely /tg/-related? Thanks.

"Bacon," you say. "Yes. Bacon." You walk downstairs and into the kitchen. The fridge yields its glorious salted pigflesh to you, the cupboard yields a frying pan and the draw yields tongs. You fire up one of the rings on the stove, put the pan on the ring and put a couple of rashers of bacon in the pan.

While that's coming to temperature, you stick a piece of bread in the toaster and start it going. You rummage around in the cupboard, but your mother has still entirely failed to get any more honey, so golden syrup again it is.

While you were rummaging, the pan came up to temperature, and the bacon is now sizzling. You turn it, then keep an eye on it while you grab a plate and a knife and fork. Once you have them, you put the knife and fork on the table and the plate next to the stove, for easy access.

The bacon reaches the point where the fat's just beginning to go golden, so you turn it again to cook it evenly. The toast pops up at that point, so you grab it and put a dollop of golden syrup on it, then realise your mistake - you need the knife for this. You grab the knife from the table and spread the syrup over the toast, by which time the bacon is ready, so you stick it and the toast on the plate, turn the ring off and head to the table with your culinary prize.

Breakfast is good. Then again, bacon is rarely not good in your opinion, so there may be a certain amount of bias factoring into your judgement.

You have a little bit of homework - Maths. Equally, there's a LOT of time left in the weekend.

You decide to get dressed before even considering homework.

Something sensible given you have no idea what's coming up. Jeans and a t-shirt. Simple, easy, not difficult to get around in. Perfect.

Right. Dressed. Now then, it might be prudent to get in touch with James. He's up to his neck in this too.

Where's he likely to be, though?

>Try heading into town. He might be there.
>You're pretty sure the school's closed at the weekend, but it couldn't hurt to check...

Caretaker, a bit of advice as a player. You might want to have your first story post of the session be filled with more content than that. First posts of a session leave a lasting impression.

Since you mentioned that your planned format involves the mundane aspect as a prelude for the "surreal" aspect, it might help to do a short, plot relevant summary of what occurred during the sessions with interaction on the mundane world, just to jog the memories of current players and to get any potential new players up to speed.

Just my two cents.
>>
>>39987408
You decide to head to the library. James is, to put it bluntly, a nerd, he's probably there, if he isn't at home.

You get a strange urge to take the dagger with you, and decide to indulge it. Why not? You slip it into your pocket, then stick your shoes on and head out of the front door.

You shut the door, and head down the path. It takes you a couple of steps to notice that it doesn't feel right, though. You look down - and you're walking on sand. Dry sand.

The sun abruptly brightens. You look up, and you're in a desert.

Right. Suddenly in the middle of a desert. Not the exact situation you'd hope for, but it could be worse.

You start to look around for cover, but none seems forthcoming. However, behind you you see four thin blobs. You walk towards them, and they resolve themselves into four people - two men you don't recognise, a woman you don't recognise - and that guy from the TV last Saturday.

"Ah, excellent, you made it on time," he says. "I'm the MC for this show. Right, roll camera!" He pauses, then starts speaking again. "Hello, and welcome to this very special episode of the Desert Forges! Our contestants today are Simon, John, Jenny and Alison!" How in the hell does he know your name? Also, why is Simon dressed in almost exactly the same colours as you are?

The MC walks Simon over to you. He looks like he might be a tad overweight, but it looks like he's got some decent muscle. "Right, Simon, Alison, you're on the blue team. You'll be supporting each other through the challenges ahead, and, should you succeed, you'll be able to forge your own gold!"

He walks you back over to John and Jenny. "So, our two teams are ready for the trials ahead. First, though, it's time to decide who's going to get the first chance to light the forges. Time for the duels!"

>cont.
>>
>>39987701
The MC turns you around, and there are two jeeps there. You're... not sure how they can have appeared, there's no cover that they can have been behind. "Well, get in, get in, we've got a busy day ahead of us!" he says. "Oh, and don't worry about me, I'll get there on my own."

You get into one of the jeeps with Simon, and the other pair get into the other jeep. As soon as you're both inside, the jeep takes off. There are water bottle in the back, so you should be good on the dehydration side of things.

The jeep rounds a free-standing rock formation, and suddenly there's a maze of walls in front of you. The jeep screeches to a halt, and you and Simon get out. True to his word, the MC is already there. The other jeep draws up, John and Jenny get out, and the MC starts talking.

"Welcome... to the first duel! In this duel, Alison and Jenny will be racing through this maze and through obstacles, collecting necklaces along the way. The first person to each necklace has the best chance of getting it, so it pays to be fast!" He leads you over to one of the two entrances, and Jenny over to the other. "You'll set off on the sound of the gun." A man in stereotypical Arabic dress steps forward, carrying an old blunderbuss. "Abdulah!" the MC calls. The gun is fired, and you begin running.

>>
>>39988001
Contested rolls are different to simple rolls.

In a contested roll, you're aiming to get more successes than the other person. What this means in practise is that I have absolutely no clue who's going to win, even if you roll terribly.

You begin well, getting the first necklace, but Jenny makes it to the second before you do. You race on through the maze, and find a tall pole, which has the necklace dangling from the top. Thankfully, it has hand- and footholds, but it's still going to be a bit of a climb. Jenny arrives just as you begin to climb, and begins to clamber up herself.

>Contested roll: Average Strength - 3 rolls, TN 10.
>>
Rolled 2, 5, 1, 2 - 4 = 6 (4d6 - 4)

>>39988064
At the end of this leg of the contest, is it only the amount of necklaces collected that matters? Because this would've been a great opportunity to hold a vote on what approach to use to acquire it.

Example:
>Disrupt Jenny's climb to claim the necklace on the pole first.
>Steal the necklace Jenny has on her.
>Let her take the necklace on the pole, then just threaten her to fork over both necklaces with the knife you brought.

MC didn't really expand upon the rules, so anything goes might be fine around here.
>>
>>39988159
Sorry, yes. It is only the number of necklaces collected that counts. That said, interfering with the other contestants isn't allowed. Being sneaky enough to steal the necklace might be fine, though.

Your advantage on the pole lets you get to the top first and claim the necklace. You climb back down and chase after Jenny, who's already started towards the exit.

However, you overtake her and reach the exit first, claiming the third necklace.

"A splendid victory, Alison!" the MC exclaims. "Better luck next time, Jenny. Alison, you've won, so here." He hands you a dagger, which looks exactly like the one you bought on Wednesday. "You'll want to hang onto that. Now, anything to say before we head on to the next duel?"

"Uh, my name isn't Alison," you say, "it's Allie. My parents were a little weird with the whole 'naming their child' thing."

"Ah, my apologies. We'll get that sorted out," says the MC. "Now, everyone into the jeeps! Time we were headed to the next duel!"

You and Simon climb in and the jeep takes off again. This time, it round a rock formation and suddenly, you're at the foot of a gorge. The MC, as with last time, is already there.

"Good, good, everyone's on time. Now, we'll be headed into the gorge for this one. If you would look up?" he says.

You look up, and suspended between the two sides of the gorge are a pair of large cylinders made of rope and planks. Somehow, despite there being no visible way for them to do so, they rotate on their long axis.

"There are a pair of rooms on either side of each of those cylinders. Your goal is to get through your cylinder, tag your partner, and your partner will go back. With luck, you'll be back before the timer runs out and before your opponent. Now, the women will go first."

He leads you to a set of steps carved into the side of the gorge. The steps lead up to a tunnel, which in turn leads to the room the MC talked about. The MC checks a small window in the wall facing the gorge, then speaks again. "We are now ready to begin! On the sound of the gun!"

The blunderbuss fires again, and you're off!

Would the beginner fencing skill be an influence for this? Fencers can't maneuver beyond a limited zone, so I thought the path with the plank might remind her of that in this instance.

Also, if you wanted to put a break between the action via scenes, you could try giving Allie a chance to interact with her teammate Simon. Try to get to know the rules of the Episodes, get some info on the Emcee, etc?

You keep a steady pace through the cylinder, being tumbled by its rotation, but you manage to make your way through without too much difficulty. Once you're there, though, you find that Jenny's there already - John must have set off. You tag Simon, and he clambers into the cylinder. You have little ability to see how the race is going, but you can watch the timer - there's one in each room. Finally, you hear the blunderbuss being fired again, just before the timer runs out. The MC walks into the room, and says, "Follow me, Allie, Jenny."

He leads you through a tunnel and down a set of stairs back down into the gorge, where you are shortly joined by Simon and John.

"Well, you certainly cut it close, Simon. Nevertheless, you've won. Here," He hands Simon a dagger. "You'll have to put a little more effort in next time, John. Now, anything to say, Simon?"

"Nah, I'm good. Fired up for the next duel," he says, bouncing from foot to foot.

"Excellent! Well, into the jeeps, come on," the MC says.

You and Simon climb into the jeep, and it sets off again. The ride seems to be taking a little longer this time.

You think for a moment, then frown. "Hold up. Go back. Where on earth did you find info on episodes? Like, it being deadlier? How did you get that information? Isn't discussing it against the rules?"

"You know you don't talk about episodes to people who aren't infected, right? Well, when you're having an episode, you do whatever you can to survive. I learned that one the hard way. If that means telling the fresh blood about what to be on guard for, then so be it. From what you've said, I gather that this is only your second or third episode, and you're already going deep. I think you'd better give your support group a call when this ends and tell them that you might not be around for too long."

"Some people have mantras that they repeat to make an episode end quicker. I've never actually found that it helps, but it can help you keep calm. If there are things that look and act like people, they probably won't try to kill you, as long as you're civil towards them. Oh, and-" she's cut off by the MC.

"Hey, step out of the vehicle, will you? Both of you," he says. "We just got done with the third duel, and it looks like the tables may be turning! John won! Congratulations, John!" he hands John a dagger. "Better luck next time, Simon. Now, John, anything you'd like to say?"

"Nah, I'm good. I think we stand a good chance of winning this," John says.

"That's what I like to hear: some gusto!" says the MC. "Now, back into the jeeps, all of you."

You drink a little water and wait while the jeep travels. When it pulls up about five minutes after it started, you climb out. The MC leads you over to a set of stocks, and the guy in the Arabic clothing from before closes them over your legs and puts large pegs in place to hold it shut, then does the same to Jenny. The MC, in the meantime, leads Simon and James over to a position in the distance and a separate person, although one who is curiously blurred, connects them to some poles using long ropes.

The MC calls out "The rules of this duel are simple. Each man must race to untie themself from their poles in order to reach their partner and release them. Their partner must then race to the cage behind them, open it and get the dagger! Begin on the sound of the gun!"

The blunderbuss fires again, and the two mean begin to race.

Simon undoes his first rope while John's still struggling towards his first pole, then reaches his second pole shortly after John undoes his first rope. He pulls out the pins holding you in the stocks, and lifts the top bar off you. You turn and begin to run, just as John starts his final run towards Jenny, and make it to the cage just as Jenny begins to make her run. However, there are a series of pins holding the cage door in place, and some of them are holding other pin in place.

"Simon, how are you feeling?" you ask.

"Not bad, why do you ask?" he replies.

"I was wondering what you're thinking about the challenges to come," you say. "It would be nice to get some sort of information on team morale, you know?"

"I guess I'm looking forward to them," he replies.

He's rather... one dimensional, isn't he?

You decide to just sit back and have a breather while the jeep arrives.

When it stops, you get out - and in front of you is what looks like the ruined remains of an ancient walled city. "Good, you've arrived," says the MC. "Now, let's see who has the most daggers." Simon pulls out the two daggers you won, and John pulls out the two daggers the other team won. "Ah. A tie," says the MC.

You remember the dagger you bought and brought with you. You pull it out, and the MC raises his eyebrows. "Hmm. Looks like it's not a tie after all. I'm slightly surprised that we have five daggers from four duels, but that's fine. You'll be given the chance to light the forges first. Each dagger you have will be converted to a flame, and those flames will be what you use to light the forges. You'll go through four challenges. Teamwork will be required to defeat them and light the forges while keeping your flames lit."

The MC leads you to a tent inside the city. "Sit down, John, Jenny. Simon, Allie, follow me."

The MC leads you through winding streets in between the ruined buildings until you reach an intact structure. There, he reaches into a nook in the wall, and pulls out a lit torch. "For this challenge, Simon will be pushing the flame using a rod, while you will be lifting obstacles out of the way, Allie. However, you'll be bound to each other by the wrists, and the only way to lift the obstacles is with your foot, using stirrups connected to a pulley system." The Arabic-clothed man from earlier binds your wrists together using a rope, although there's some slack between the your wrists.

Simon lies down in position before the tunnel he's meant to push the flame down, and you lie down with your feet near the first stirrup. A brick is placed in the tunnel, a thin candle is placed on the brick and lit, and the game begins.

You lift the first couple of obstacles out of the way, but the third stirrup you fumble with for a while, costing you valuable time. Simon is on the ball, pushing the brick whenever he has a chance to get it past the obstacles. Unfortunately, the fourth obstacles proves to be just a little too difficult to lift out of the way in time, and the candle gutters out.

"Unlucky, my friends," says the MC. "However, there are still three challenges left."

He leads out out of the intact structure and through the streets again. A different building beckons, this one rather longer. When you get inside, you see a long trough of water with a metal plate above it, suspended fro the ceiling by four metal rods. Between the two is a pulley system with a platform on it.

"Your goal in this challenge is to pull the flame to the middle using the pulley system. However, you need to keep the tension in the rope within certain boundaries. Too hard, and you'll send it into the metal plate and put it out. Not hard enough, and it will fall into the water."

Simon takes up a position at the far end of the pulley system while you do the same at the near end, and you pull the ropes taut between you. It's a surprisingly difficult task. The candle is placed on the platform and lit, and the challenge begins.

You begin pulling on the right rope to allow yourself more rope to feed through the other hand, while Simon does the same on his end. Between you, you manage to get the candle nearly halfway to its target before Simon gives a tug that is slightly overzealous, jerking the candle upwards and into the metal plate, extinguishing it.

"Ah, you need to anticipate your partner better next time, Allie!" comes the voice of the MC. "Simon, a little less exuberance next time. Onto the next challenge!"

He leads you out of the building and through the ruined streets to another structure. This one has a large horizontal wheel in the middle, and a stack of metal rods of various lengths stacked near the entrance.

"The wheel in the middle of the room turns freely, as you can see," the MC says, spinning it idly. "Your job is to attach the rods to the wheel in such a way that the splints attached to the ends can be spun over the flame and light the four wicks you see near the far wall. You'll need to light all four wicks, so you may only attach four rods. Good luck!"

This tie, the MC lights a large trough full of oil ablaze. It's certainly going to be enough to light simple wood.

Your skills don't help you much, but Simon springs into action. He takes four rods from the pile and slots them into place, then spins the wheel. Remarkably, the four rods he's picked are exactly the right length, and the wicks all light.

"Good job! The first forge is lit," the MC says. "Now, the final challenge. Follow me." You are once again lead through the ruined city to a new building. This one has tiles on the floor, and the ceiling is made of grates. There are two ledges, one either side of the room, and a couple of pillars in the middle of the room, as well as slots in the walls.

"Your task is simple. You have three planks, and you need to get across the room to the other side in sufficient time, with the flame still alight." The MC reaches into a niche in the wall and picks up a small oil lamp. "The oil in this lamp will only last a short period of time, so you had better hurry. Oh, and don't let anything touch the tiles."

The MC hands the lamp to Simon, lights it, and leaves the room.

Simon hands the lamp to you and moves two planks to bridge the gaps between the ledge and the first two pillars, then you move across them. He then moves across the first plank himself, carrying the third plank, and fits the end into a slot in the wall, while you just about manage to keep your balance. You hand the lamp to Simon, and then you have just about enough reach and strength to jump across the gap. Simon finally places the lamp on the first plank, reclaimed from its bridging position, and slides it out to you. You guide the plank to a stable position and pick the lamp back up, and Simon joins you.

"Bravo! Well done. The lamp will light the fuse, so," the MC takes the lamp off you and lights a thick rope, which, nevertheless, spits and sparks like some sort of firework, "and we will head off to the forges!"

He leads you out of the building and through the ruined city until you reach a large trapdoor.

"This is the entrance to the forge-works. Below here, you will have to work your way through a mine, pushing a cart along the way, then don protective clothing and pour the gold. However, before you don the clothing, you must give the Forgemaster a number. If he accepts that number, the crucible will be release automatically. If he doesn't, you will have to release it yourselves. Once you give the Forgemaster your number, you will have two minutes to put on the clothing and pour the metal. There will be other workers to help you, so feel free to order them around. Do you have any questions?"

"Yeah. This number we're supposed to give. How do we know what it's supposed to be?" you ask.

"A shrewd question, and one with a simple answer. I will give you four numbers which form a sequence. You must find the fifth. However, do not tell me it. You must give it to the Forgemaster, then you will learn whether it is the correct answer or not," the MC says. "Now, the four numbers in the sequence are as follows. Three. Fourteen. Fifteen. Ninety-two."

>>
>>40000427
Yeah, I passed out myself and then came to only to find the aforementioned update. I don't buy the answer in the other anon's explanation.

And even if that's kinda lame, I'm the only one who has brought it up so far, so, you know. Besides, the advantage of 3 14 15 92 is to trick anons into thinking that it's an increasing pattern.
>>
>>40000495
It's kinda annoying that they could both be right. We'll just have to guess one I suppose.

I just read the beginning, some random thoughts if you are interested, watch for text smoothness (a man you don't know and two women you don't know is just a bad phrase), make choices count , that "lel no library your vote counts for shit " was bad (unless you are bringing it up later) and finally the thoughts making sense:"why is simon dressed exactly like me"doesn't sound too sensitive, i am implying you did it to let us understand we were allison , but you could have done it better, the surpise seems out of place just for dresses , especially considering he teleported in a desert.
Well good luck with your quest and hope this critique will help
