Ask Languid Anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

You’ve been able to do weird things all your life, but only in the past year have you started to understand why. Your name is Sierra Beckhoff, and you are a hellborn – part mortal, part demon. Ever since you ran into a family of demon hunters, a lot of weird (but cool) stuff has gone down. You’ve battled rogue generals, joined the a baron’s conclave of demonic advisors, and dueled landmasters. You maybe even met a real live dragon – though you’re not a hundred percent on that one. But perhaps most surprisingly, you successfully graduated high school.

Before you can pile in a car and ride into the sunset on your pan-America roadtrip, though, you’ve got a couple loose ends to tie up. Ushologuissa, a Stygian countess (and Grand Wyrmwrither), has nabbed a foreign hell VIP dude from your fief, with the aid of Hassatur the fish king. Or something like that, anyway. It’s up to you – or at least you decided it’s up to you, so you can look good and fight it up with some bad guys – to snap Mardusia’s emissary back from his Stygian captors, but be all sneaky and stuff about it so your baron doesn’t lose face, and also so you don’t provoke retaliation.

Except, of course, it doesn’t have to all be up to you.

---

You wish Isaac or Waldric could just come along and do some super sweet secret rescue mission with you. Stupid political crap. Stuff would be easier if you could just set everything ablaze.

You look at both Waldric and Isaac, simultaneously glad and miffed that you crashed their secret demonbane/demon baron conference. (+2 Stress: 24) “You guys are lame,” you tell them, sitting up as you do.
>>
>>39921752

“You want to sit this out, fine. I have other better people who can do anything.”

“I forbid you from asking Ranthix along,” Waldric says. He may be joking, though. Maybe.

You scoff. “Don’t patronize me. You have Ulam doing anything? Because if he’s not doing anything, I think he is now.”

“Ulam’uberatu is aware of the situation and its particular delicacies. Today he’s occupying himself personal affairs, but he will assist you gladly if you so desire,” Waldric says.

“Well I do so desire,” you say. “Let me shoot him a text.” You whip out your phone to get plans underway.

Isaac halts you with an entreating expression. “Why don’t you call him instead?”

“I guess it’s kind of important,” you say to yourself. You pop up from the couch and get Ulam on the line, while Waldric and Isaac get back to their scheming. You walk out of the room so you can have the conversation on your own terms.
>>
>>39921770

It rings a couple times before the fat Stygian crab guy answers. “Fair greetings, Sakheris,” says Ulam. He accidentally slips into using your demonym almost all the time. You’re not sure if he’s doing it on purpose, or if he’s just really bad with foreign names.

“Hey,” you say. “I’m saving the Mardusian emissary today. You want in?”

“Though the spawn who have seized the emissary will not see clearly on this matter, I am glad for the opportunity to render aid,” he answers. “Lucifer is a good friend.”

His name's Lucifer? Neato. I was wondering how long it'd take for a Lucifer to show up what with it apparently being a commonish name for both demons and angels.

I doubt this is a reedy ambassador dude. Demon politics seems to often end up going to "kill the dudes who disagree or at least be scary enough that you don't have to kill them", so the important dude whose name I can't remember wouldn't send a reedy little dude as his ambassador guy.

“So you already talked to them? How’d they say no to you?”

“Unequivocally,” says Ulam, “though with respect.”

“Well that doesn’t sound very respectful at all,” you say.

“It is uncomfortable for the unsettled to acknowledge their hypocrisy,” he replies.

“Yeah, don’t you know it. So this friend of yours, Lucifer, is he one of those reedy ambassador types? I mean, if we grab him and run, do we have to make sure he doesn’t get shot? Or is busting him out all we have to do, and he’ll be fine snapping everybody’s necks from there?”

“Lucifer lacks in obvious martial prowess, but it is in bad form to underrate principle representatives of Archduke Sulkrasph.”

“So, more of a magical kind of guy then?” you ask.

“I do not know,” he replies simply.

“That’s unhelpful,” you comment.

“The dealings of the noble blooded are enigmatic. Knowledge is power to those who sit atop thrones,” says Ulam.

“Well fine, Lucifer’s a wild card,” you say. “Is there anything you do know, though? Like, about the guys that are keeping him?”

“They are cut-throats, common born,” Ulam responds over the phone. “Axos, a Stygian-Infernus splitblood, leads them. He is the spawn of Ushologuissa’s youngest cousin, and the demons with him call him comrade and friend.”

“So, a little bit of everything, led by a big fiery inferno,” you say.

“He is accompanied by several smaller infernos, and some not so small,” says Ulam.

Good to know. “All right. I think I get it,” you say. “You have any idea where they’re keeping Lucifer? If you do, we can pop down there and get this taken care of quick before anybody accidentally kills him on accident,” you say.

“I do not know where they have him, but I know of those that buy the strong herbs of Axos’s band,” says Ulam. “We might start with them.”

So any ideas of where to take this roadtrip? I was thinking swinging down south through the Sierra-Nevada range, through Fresno to find where Nevada is supposedly buried, and then maybe LA and going east from there.
>>
>>39926762
Well, we should probably hit up as many national parks as we can to try and snag landwells. How many places we visit depends on how long the trip is planned for, but we can probably hit the east coast and check out shit on the way.

“Sounds like a good plan B,” you say. “Waldric says he’s got some blood on him. We can go straight there, but if that doesn’t pan out, we can head up your contacts.”

“A wise decisions,” Ulam replies. “Where shall I meet you?”

---

A couple minutes later, you head out the front door of the building into the sunlight, and pull out the small glass vial from your inside jacket pocket. The glasswork is exceedingly fine, with intricate designs laced over the exterior, inlaid with magic to keep the content fresh. The blood within glints strangely silvery under light of day.

You probably won’t return the vial after you’re done with it.

You scent someone very familiar on the air, and glance over your shoulder. “Hey Wolf,” you say.

Wolfgang walks over, still dressed up from work, though the heat has forced him to go without his suit jacket. He’s got his sleeves rolled up just the right amount, almost to the elbow. It’s a pretty cool look for a pretty cool guy. “What’s that you’ve got there?” he asks, nodding the vial.

“The blood of Lucifer,” you say, palming the vial and sticking it back in a safe place. “It’s super secret Conclave stuff.”

“Really,” he says, his tone thoughtful.
>>
>>39927029

“I kind of wanted to hang out a little, but something came up and I kind of got to go be a hero now,” you tell him, jerking your thumb toward your bike. “Didn’t mean to make you come down for no reason.”

“What, you think I can’t be a hero too?” he asks, making an almost pouting kind of expression. You are very familiar with this look, and think it makes your boyfriend look kind of ridiculous. Naturally it’s a total ruse, but somehow it still makes you feel bad for him, kind of in the same way you feel bad for a kitten just because it’s so little and stuff. (-1 Stress: 23)

“You’re a hero too, you know, like an everyday hero. Not as cool or dangerous or whatever like me, but you know, still relevant from a certain point of view,” you explain.

“You think I’m just an everyday hero, huh,” he says, intensifying his sad face.

“You’re being stupid. You just can’t handle getting shot,” you tell him, trying not to look at him too much.

“Us everyday heroes get worried when our girlfriends go out to fight crime, all by themselves,” he says, becoming even sadder.

“Stop trying to change my mind. I’m not even going alone, Ulam’s coming along.”

“Let me come along, just this once,” says Wolf, persuasively. “If I get shot and die, I’ll never ask again.”

That’s his way of saying he won’t get shot or die. He’s usually pretty good about saying things that happen, but you still don’t want to have him along seeing you being all weird or critiquing you or anything. You’re about to tell him that, but he’s still making that face.

“Stop that face thing,” you demand. “Quit it.” But he doesn’t quit it, and you can’t even handle it, so you grab his face and make him quit it yourself my carefully pushing his face into another configuration. You’ve had a lot of practice on Reeber, and this is remarkably similar, except Wolf is not as scaley as the hound, and his flesh is more supple.

You settle on a more normal, slightly tense look, and call it quits. Considering your handiwork for a moment, you realize your mind has indeed changed, despite yourself. “Ugh. Fine, I hereby dub thee deputy hero for the day,” you say. “But I reserve the right to revoke it whenever I want. You don't get to make any snarky comments if I wind up all covered in blood or anything.”

“I won’t say a word,” he affirms.

“It’s a deal then,” you say, donning your helmet and heading back to your bike. “Meet me at the house.”

He gives a half salute, and goes over to wherever he parked.

--

You head in the door, with Wolfgang right behind.
>>
>>39928152

“Hey, I’m home!” you shout. “Just going to get some stuff and go do some conclave stuff for Waldric and... Isaac.” You almost say something else for some reason, but you correct yourself.

“Mom’s out,” Harvey shouts from the other room. “Who’s with you?”

“I’m with her,” Wolfgang answers. He walks by and gives you a nod. “Go do your thing,” he says. He heads off to go hang with Harvey in the family room, allowing you your space.

I disagree on the Blood Magic thing, we're pretty tough thanks to the Thultal training regime, and I don't see how it hinders mobolity. Better to go all and and not need it than to need it and not have it, especially if fuck a stealth roll and need a big shadow spell in a hurry.

>Realizing that Convulsing Shock is the magic equivalent of a beanbag round that doesn't miss in terms of what it does to someone (nasty bruise, stun, some damage that usually won't kill a person).
Well that's neat I guess. Would be pretty cool to hit someone in the eyes with it. Or Supercharge + RR it and see if we can make someone's heart explode.

I still think we should have gotten the passive power that boosts our strength when our stress is above 70, and the active strength booster power, so we can supercharge it and just really ruin someones day.
Like suplexing an oncoming car or throwing someone through a couple of walls

ACTUAL REPERCUSSIONS DOWN THE LINE

if we fuck it up other than us having to murder-fuck our way out of things. Changing that part of my vote, though.

Same way I feel about the gun and the grenades. I would like to see if we could get some flashbangs or smoke grenades for dynamic escapes / distractions though.
>>

I really like the idea of using supercharge on using shadow control and blowing all our PP on crushing an area. It'd be like dropping everyone there to the bottom of the ocean instantly.

Hey, if we tie with the "Wear" choice for Darker or Tacticool, can we go with the Mail option?

And can we possibly get something so that other people can't track us by blood or other traces we might leave behind, like we're doing to this guy?

Stealthier than tacticool, and if it's under our clothes it won't make sounds. Padding, anon, it's a thing. It's more of a question what will get caught up on things and restrict our speed/movement.

I know what they are, and the joke is still stupid, but it made me laugh is what I said. For some reason, I imagined an entire Monty Python style skit where Sierra pumps out her breast milk and throws it at someone but it is fire, burning them and alerting everyone that Sierra is there.

>>
You head up to your room and gather your things. You take a second to make sure all your summons are good to go. You’ll have a lot of options to respond with. Then you go ahead and get changed, opting for a simple, functional getup with a lightweight bullet proof vest and tight jacket laid out on the bed for when you’re ready. It won’t breathe much, but you can handle it.

You collect your varied magical items, checking in briefly on your enormous goblin mushroom and the brittle, dried out maviel in your closet. Then you dive under your bed, eventually coming out with your MP5 and a Batman graphic novel you should probably sneak back into Rowan’s collection at some point. You sit on your bed and ruffle around in your dresser drawers until you find the silencer. You don’t know why it’s hanging out with your bras, but that’s where it is.

You’ll have to grab some flashbangs or smokes when you head out. While blowing people up is pretty cool, you don’t think you should count on it. Waldric was pretty adamant on the whole people not knowing it was you or him thing.

With all that settled in your mind, you sit down and pull out your switchblade. Blood magic’s a sweet thing when you do it right. It’s just a matter of being prepared.

You set to work on your left shoulder, carefully etching Heltic lettering into your flesh, gritting your teeth through the kniving pain. The coppery taste of your blood fills the air, though it’s strange how you can’t really pick out the specifics of it. It’s just the default scent of blood to you.

You start out with the longest things, of course, so you don’t have to figure out how to fit them in later. You’ve seen Xanissil fit whole pages on her arms, and the way she weaves her words around makes everything fit gracefully and in a pretty cool way. You can’t write that small or neat yet. Your inscriptions are probably deeper than they need to be, and the pain distracts you, causing you to make stupid mistakes that you have to correct.
>>
>>39929218

>>
>>39929218

The weird focused feeling you get with the knife in hand reminds you a lot of when you lived with the Andersons. Except that didn’t really have anything to do with magic, exactly. Or maybe you somehow knew by instinct about blood magic, and you were just drawn to it? You’ve never been shy about blood, especially your own. Just something about seeing it.

It was your own fault they figured it out. The first time they found your door locked, you should have kept your business out somewhere else. The psychologists that talked at you after helped you realize you shouldn’t have let yourself get complacent.

Of course, now you know you were like, half demon or whatever, they probably didn’t have a clue what the deal really was. You’re not even sure you can blame them for not suspecting you were secretly a proto-blood mage demon, instead of some troubled youth with a bunch of things wrong with her.

There’s a knock at the door, and you’re mid way through one of the last inscriptions. You’re too buried in your thoughts to react in time.

“You in here?” asks Wolfgang, swinging open the door and allowing a splinter of light into your blackened lair. “Ulam’s here, if....” he looks at you and stops.

Nobody’s supposed to see you like this. (+24 Stress: 47)

>Right, Ulam’s here. Let’s just... I’ve got the vial and stuff.

Germany had formidable arcane power throughout the war, a great deal of which was provided by Chthonia and its affiliates. This arms agreement saw Germany provide a massive amount of dark power directly to the Imperiate and her affiliates, as well as sending a few industrial and scientific advisers to Chthonia. In return, the Imperiate sent expeditionary elements from her legions to assist Axis forces on the ground.

Hugo Boss is pretty sweet.

And yes, Society tends to frown on genocidal racists. I honestly wouldn't even have had nearly that much problem with them compared to other genocidal racists, if their theories weren't just so . . . absolutely terrible.

Also, you know, being Jewish. Well, Mormon dad and Jewish mom, but Mormons DO believe that they're a lost tribe of Israel.

I'm a tall blonde haired blue-eyed dude, too, since my mother is descended from German Jews who integrated a fair bit before the war.

Anyways, I'm sure you can understand WHY society doesn't really like it.

That could be medics or support guys, not necessarily front line troops.

Besides front line troops would be harder to keep under wraps.

You attempt to keep your cool, but you do not feel very cool right now. “What, you never seen fucking blood magic before?” you ask pointedly, yanking up your jacket to cover the bleeding inscriptions. (+2 Stress: 49)

“No, it’s no problem,” says Wolfgang, leaving your question unanswered. But he’s not leaving, and you don’t want him here right now.

You attempt to keep the heat out of your voice, but it just flares up off of your shoulders anyway. “You just going to stare, or what?” (+3 Stress: 52)

“I’m being dense, sorry,” he says quickly, backing out and leaving you alone.

Stupid Wolfgang, busting in like he owns the place. You take a deep breath and try to calm down, focusing again on finishing your preparations. A couple minutes later, you finish up, feeling somewhat recovered. (-20 Stress: 32, -1 HP: 33) You go ahead and bandage the inscriptions so they don’t get rubbed the wrong way, and head downstairs, weapons in hand.

You find the guys all in the kitchen, being fed marshmallows by Harvey.

Ulam is in human disguise – he’s big, tall, heavy, and wide, almost unnaturally so. He bears the face of an older gentleman, with intricate, kind wrinkles about his jowls. His clothing is simple and black, almost like that of a catholic priest, except there’s no little white thing or anything to break up the monolithic blackness of his garb. If you weren’t familiar with him already, you’d expect him to start trying to get you to buy o or build a church or something.

“Did you try asking her out?” says Wolfgang. “That’s the best way, in my experience.”

“That’s a really good idea you just had,” says Harvey, balancing a marshmallow on his forehead and somehow getting it into his mouth, which is pretty impressive. “I’ll get on that right away.”

“It doesn’t have to be hard,” Wolf tells him. “If she hates you, she’ll say no. If she likes you, but not that way, she’ll say she’s busy. And if she does like you, she’ll try to find out the details.”
>>
>>39929933
Doubtful I think. Dude only bought some demon mercenaries. It's not like they would have any reason to help him out after the nation he used to pay for their services got wiped out.
>>
>>39929980
Because the late Imperiate was all about medical advances and aid.

I assume the Allies has supernatural divisions of sorts.
>>
>>39929992

“The splendors of adolescence,” Ulam says, lacing his fingers over his stomach, a nostalgic feeling radiating from him. “Live these years, child. An eternity cannot replace youth.”

You enter the realm. “Marshmallow,” you demand. Harvey tosses you one, and you snap it out of the air with your shadow and eat it.

Ulam turns to you, not moving his neck so much as he reorients his entire body. “Have you the spell?”

“In hand,” you say, drawing out a piece of chalk.

“I cleared a place in the back yard,” says Harvey, leading the way back.

Ulam follows with an oddly stiff, ponderous gait. Must not be easy stuffing six legs into two.

“Hey,” says Wolfgang, holding you up. “I don’t have a problem with blood magic. It’s just ritual, I know it doesn’t mean anything.”

You’re glad to hear him say that. And yet, you kind of don’t feel better about him seeing you carving yourself up?

Well we know he's a space mage.

He teleported himself and Moriah into an apartment in the Hellion Quest thread, which sounds like a damn useful power in our current situation.

Past that, details are sketchy. He's a demon wizard- so we know he has powers but we (the players at least, and Sierra probably) dont have the particulars of what he's capable of.

3 puppet veins, 1 blood curse

“I just... I don’t like people seeing be doing that kind of stuff, “ you tell him. “I mean, the door was closed for a reason.”

“I suppose I was hedging my bets that the reason was because you didn’t have a shirt on,” Wolfgang says, sounding contrite.

You think that’s a joke, but you can never be sure. Either way, you snicker and punch him in the shoulder. Not enough to really hurt, but maybe just enough to hurt a little tiny bit. Maybe next time you have him to yourself, you could try pushing the envelope a little bit.

You both head over following in Harvey’s footsteps.

“You’re a loose cannon,” you say, affecting the voice of a gruff police woman. “One more breach, and I’ll need your badge on my desk, Crowther.”

The lameness of your joke maybe distracts from what he saw you doing earlier. “I don’t have my badge yet,” says Wolf. “I think it got stuck in the mail or something.”

“Anyway,” you say, “I’d prefer if you keep this on the down low. I haven’t really kept everybody up to date on the whole ‘Zeshic School’ thing.”

“Not a problem,” he replies.

You come out in the back yard, or at least the small rectangle of cement ringed with bushes that’s called the back yard, and get to drawing out your funky blood magic circle thing while Harvey and Ulam watch. You’ve gotten good enough that you don’t even need to reference the pictures on your cellphone more than once to remind yourself of what you’re doing.

Then, you place the vial of Lucifer’s blood in the off-center circle within the circle, and set a special compass down in the little triangle across from it. Then you push a careful amount of magic and will into the whole setup. (-2 PP: 39) The chalk lines flash with a sudden dim glow, and revert to normal.

You erase the chalk, pocket the vial, and pick up your compass. The needle within spins about wildly for a couple seconds, and everyone leans in to see the magic happen.
>>
>>39930615
Of course, you did everything perfectly, so the compass snaps to a certain point and holds steady. “Looks like he’s in the city,” you say, holding up the compass and moving it to and fro to test the arrow. It’s definitely not pointing north, so it’s got a good hold on the blood.

“How do you know he’s not a hundred miles away in that direction?” asks Wolf.

“That way is the ocean,” says Harvey, following the compass point. “Punk Stygians have the ambassador guy, not the Mermenes.”

“If we go to the coast and he’s not there, I’ll get Isasac to call in a favor with the navy or the coast guard or somebody, and they can handle it,” you say. You look to your ultra demon team. “You guys good to go?”

“I do not require much,” Ulam demurs.

“I keep my things in the trunk,” Wolfgang says. “You guys can ride with me.”

“I believe it wise to take my carriage instead,” says Ulam. “Waldric assures me it is prepared sufficiently against mortal arms.

“Or you could just all go separately so you have more than one getaway vehicle,” Harvey suggests.

>I like Harvey’s plan. We’ll convoy until we get nearby, and then we’ll get things all set up for the perfect heist. I mean hostage rescue.
>Sorry Ulam, your black SUV is kind of conspicuous with its tinted windows and all that. We’ll just ride with Wolfgang.
