"So, yer sayin' you control the barrier around these parts, eh?"
"That's exactly what I'm saying. So why don't you answer the question, mister-"
"Albator, take some time to remember that. It's the name of the person whose gonna kick yer teeth in."

You are Jack Albator, enraged captain, angry god of the sea, someone who is a few steps away from tearing a bear-guy in half. Today, you came to a remote village in who-knows-where to find a number of missing villagers who were taken by who-knows-what.
You certainly found where they were being taken, alright. They were being abducted and taken to the northern most reaches of the land. Far outside of where the protective barrier should be extending. This means that people should be starting to feel pain once more, but that doesn't seem to be the case. This area is surrounded by a barrier of its own.
According to this guy sitting in front of you, that's because the barrier in question is being artificially made. Plus, he claims he can take it away to whomever he wants, whenever he wants.

"That's nice Mr. Albator. How do you plan on doing that exactly?"
"I'll think of a way."

"Hmm." He sits back in his chair. "But until then, why don't you answer some questions for me?"
"Questions like what."

"Well how about." He looks at your entourage of Cody, Yuuki, Tuile, Odelle, Aligot, and Louise. "Where is the princess and her hero?"

>"None of your business."
>"Far away from you."
>"They're around. Want to know where?"
>Forget him and his games, try to bargain with him.
>Like maybe letting him keep his nose if he tells you where his superiors are.
>Stay quiet, let him make the next move.

"How about this then."
You reach over the table and grab him by the collar. You lift him out of his chair with perfect ease just to demonstrate how immensely powerful you can be when you're even remotely angry.
"Ye tell me where we are, where yer superiors went, and how to get the villagers back. THEN Aye'll let ye keep yer nose."
You'll consider letting him keep the rest of it later.

"You should calm youself."
"Ye should tell me what I want to know."

He grumbles. "Mister Albator, you should think about this situation some more before you decide to act any further."
"EEK!"

You drop him and spin around to face your crew.
Yuuki's clothes have almost entirely burst off of her!

"NO NO, DON'T LOOK!" She falls to her knees as Aligot spins away from her. Odelle tries covering her with a blanket.

You turn to face that man again.
"The hell was that?"
"I told you." He dusts off his clothing where you dropped him, it has a few cuts and tears in it now. "I've been tasked with controlling the barrier here. So I struck through her defenses. That was just a warning, so why not start listening to reason and thought, Mister Albator?"

>"No. I don't care if I'm naked."
>"YOU'RE FINISHED!"
>"RRrrrgh. Fine. What ye want to know next?"
>Defer the conversation to someone less hotheaded.
>"How can ye control the 'barrier' anyway? Someone want to clue me in?"
>Other?

And with that, I drive home.

Thread resumes when I get there in roughly and hour or so. Maybe participation will pick up by then!

To be honest, this entire situation really angers me because it flips the bird to everything I thought I knew of barriers from S1 (never got around to the others yet, so maybe more's been said on the subjects.), and it feels like it's designed specifically to make us feel powerless - and the current bad guy KNOWS it. Frankly, not cool, but I'll ride through because I've enjoyed the quest so far despite this.

So that said, I'm actually pretty alarmed that this guy seems to be able to simply control the barrier with pin-point precision with his mind. No warning, no tells, not even a finger snap. On the one hand, that's terrifying, and totally his source of smug.

On the other, it's also our opening. He's overconfident as hell. We need to figure out how to use that.

If nothing else, there almost HAS to be a focus of some kind to generate this barrier. If someone else can take over the conversation, we can leave and start looking for it. And then we, in typical Jack style, break the shit out of it. Or hijack its controls if someone smart comes with.

We also need our barrier mages to try doing something to test it, and regular clothes instead of our barrier gear for now.

Something very similar to this happens at the end of S2.

It was an asspull, though.

"AYE'LL SEND YE TO THE PLANK WITH YE-"
You stop yourself.

Instead, you spin around to Cody, who seems to have not moved an inch since you started talking with the man.
"Aye, Cody."
"Jack."
"Aye feeling too riled up to reason with the man. May I suggest ye do it in my place?"

He smiles, maybe he has an idea?
"Sure thing, Capt'n."
"Atta boy."

You step back and help clothe Yuuki as Cody takes your seat.
"'Ey."
"Hello Cody, I've heard much about you." The man puts his arms on the table.

"Eh?" He leans back, "Hope they're good things."

"I know that you're shiftless, can't be trusted, nearly got kicked out of your own kingdom. So much so that you picked up an alias. Isn't that right, Micah?" He taps his fingers on the table.

Micah?
Cody chuckles, "Well, ain't you a smart one. So what kinda game are you playin' here if you know so much about me?"
"No games, ask a question, give an answer. And I'll do the same in return."

"Aww, no games? How 'bout one of my own, then."
Cody spins around.
"'ey, I need two of your flasks, give me the one with the 'good stuff' you took from the winery."

Does he mean the teleporting wine?
You take the teleporting wine flask out of your pocket and your emergency flask out.

"So, What's ya name again?"
"Cody, ask a question, give an answer."
"Fine then, I just gotta tell you, I think both of us need a break before I do."

The man leans over the table, looking at Cody like he's nuts.
"A break, Mr. Remington?"
"A break." Cody clanks the two flasks onto the table. "See mister, I'm really good at reading poker faces. And I know a man on the brink of panic when I see one. The way I reckon', you weren't expecting this many heroes to show up all in one place, were ya?"

The man goes silent.
"And here's what else I reckon', you can get maybe one or two of us if you're lucky. But there's no way in hell you're gonna win against four heroes at once. At least, that's what I took away from ya face when Jack here grabbed ya.

"What are you playing at, Mr. Remington?"

"Here's what I'm gonna do, mister." He clanks both flasks onto the table in front of him. "One of these flasks has that magic wine that got us here in the first place. The other has some of the smoothest alcohol you ever tasted."

"I don't see what you-"
"Well, the wine should take whoever drinks it back to the other side of town, right?"

He nods.
Cody opens the caps of the flasks, "I don't know my way around here, and even running it'll take me a while to get back. Fightin' three heroes would be easier than fightin' four, right?"

"I know better than to gamble with you, Mr.-"
"BUT!-" Cody interrupts him. "If you drink it, you know this place like the back of yer hand to be in charge of its barrier. You can find us pretty easy, I reckon'. And you'll know how many we have. The way I see it, you can't lose this game."
"Cody what are you-"
"Are you going to ABANDON us here!?" Odelle seems furious.

"From your point of view Mr. Remington, you're either saving yourself or buying yourself time."
"Let's call it a game neither of us can lose." Cody smiles. "Pick a flask."

The hell is going on?
"Damn it you!" Odelle is still angry, "You are scum! I thought Jack was the worst but now I know better!"
"You're not really gonna.. Leave us, are you Cody?" Even Yuuki sounds uncertain!

"Pick one." Cody says, flat voice.

The man reaches over and immediately grabs your emergency flask, he got it right on the first try!
"I'll take this one."
"Fine, I'll take this one."

They tip the bottles backwards and drink the entire flasks. The bear-man leans back with a smug smile.
"Sorry Mr. Remington, but I knew the one that was less full was the one with the regular alcohol in it. I suppose you'll be leaving us soon."
"Mm." Cody doesn't say a word.

"Something you would like to say to your friends before you depart?"
"Yes." He stands up. Looking the man right in the eye.

"That wine, I put it in both of the flasks when you two were bickerin'."

The man's face is normal a first. Then it slowly starts to contort. You can see a single sweatdrop start to form at his brow.

"So." Cody reaches into his holster and spins his revolver on his finger. "The way I see it, we're both gonna go alone on a trip here in about thirty seconds. Long trips always made me a little trigger happy."

Cody smiles and draws his other revolver, "So the more you talk now, the less bones of yours I'll have to break when we get there."

The man chokes, he tries to back up but Cody flips the table over with his foot and points the pistol right at the man's forehead.
"TALK!"

"K-knights.. You were looking for knights, right Mister Cody?"
"Talk about the knights faster."

- -

In a flash, Cody and the man disappear.
You were expecting Cody to wait until he got there to start breaking him. Full of surprises, it seems.

You know what you're looking for now. There's a building on the edge of town that is spying on the village. The knight is there, so is anyone else who decided to stop by.
Behind you, in the opposite direction, is Cody. He said he'll catch up with you, but you could go find him before you proceed.

Writing last post of the night.

Why is it the last post? Because WOW did it get later sooner than I expected. I think I might bump start times earlier in the future!

I started a little late today but maybe I should start around 10 or 11 AM EST to get a good jump on it? I gotta think about that.
>>
>>39922363
maybe a little earlier might be better.
>>
>>39922363
I for one prefer you starting later. I can't really follow quests in the mornings on EST.
>>
>>39922540
I'd be up for that if he could also run later, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
>>
>>39922363
I'm fine with it if you think it'll help you in the long run.

Aligot helps Yuuki reform her barrier jacket. She's fully-clothed and ready for action now.
You decide to continue onward and assault the building while you still have the element of surprise. There's a good chance they won't be expecting you to come by so soon.

Plus, there's an even smaller chance that they'll expect the group that's coming by to have three heroes!

You're glad Cody set you up in the right direction. You can only hope that he's able to handle himself wherever the wine decided to take him. You're certain he can handle that pencil-neck by himself.
All you have to worry about now is making it safely to that building. It shouldn't be too far from here.
Though, you can't help the feeling that you're being watched from all directions.

"Excuse me." Someone approaches your group from across the street.
Immediately you can feel everyone assume a fighting stance, yourself included.

It's a young man, short white hair, and he has extremely long sleeves.
You can kind of see it under his sleeves that he is extremely ripped, even his hands are calloused. Calling him "well-built" would be an understatement for someone who looks five years younger than you, easily.

"I couldn't help but notice, but you don't seem to be from around here. Can I ask a few questions?"
That sets off everyone in your party. They take a step back as you ready your weapon under your coat.

"Aye prefer if ye don't."
"Are you sure? That's unfortunate." He sighs, "I'm searching for someone and I can't seem to find them among the crowds."
"That's a shame." You say. "We must get going."

"Hold up, if you are going somewhere, may I follow?"

Thanks for the thread everyone.

I notice people saying that they wouldn't mind if it started later. Truth is: I wouldn't mind either.

You might get your wish when CPM ends, I was considering moving the Thursday block to Saturday when CPM finishes here. Saturday I can run all day long, CPM already enjoys 8+ hour threads that start at a reasonable time and run for a reasonable length. DDQ might enjoy the same thing if the second thread moved to that time block.

Just something to think about.

Remember, there is no DDQ thread on Thursday. CPM runs that day for a while. So until next time!

Supporting this. Even if he isn't involved, we're on a mission right now.

Also, what manner of fluffy ears does he have? Are they bear ears? Will they require a thorough examination by Jack to properly identify?
