What would happen if a Chapter of Space Marines suddently found out their entire new batch of recruits are nothing but infants? And that they are required by the Administratum to care for them until they are fit of training age?

Yes I know we had this thread before, but no genius thought of archiving it
>>
>>39903037
>nothing but infants

How young? Because 10-11 year old gangers/survivor could potentially be a recruit in any chapter and can be the norm.

Recruits are probably trained/taken care of by the chapter serfs until they get taken by the 10th company.
>>

You'd have a fuckton of extra-hardass spartan style marines.

Probably a new chapter in the making.

>It's a picture! I drew it for you.

AND WHAT IS IT SUPPOSED TO BE A PICTURE OF?

>It's me and you! I'm the small one, because I'm not big enough to wear Astartes Power Armor. You're the big and black one! I drewed it so that we're crushing the enemies of the Emperor, back to back, like we will when I get older! See, that's him up top, in the cloud, and all the stuff on the ground is xenos corpses!

...............

..............

IT IS A MOST WONDERFUL PICTURE, INITIATE. I ACCEPT IT GLADLY. I RECOMMEND THAT, IN ADDITION TO YOUR DUTIES, YOU ALSO LOOK INTO TRAINING YOUR ARTISTIC TALENTS. A GIFT GRANTED BY THE EMPEROR SHOULD NEVER BE WASTED, YOUNG ONE.

(Later, in the arming chamber, preparing for drop and planetfall)

Brother Chaplain, what is that upon your armor there? I do not recognize such iconography. Is it the work of some minor saint?

No, Brother-Captain. It is a gift from Initiate Crassus. I wear it upon my armor, that I might be shielded from harm by the might of the Emperor long enough to see the picture be made reality. I will, of course, remove it, should you feel it too unbecoming of my station.

..........

You may carry on, Brother-Chaplain. As always, you are the moral focus of the chapter, and you enlighten us with your insights.

They could be an experimental "chapter" of Marines too old or too injured to continue on the battlefield, and are instead relegated by their chapter/the adminstratum to raising and training the future battle-brothers of other chapters.
>>
>>39906851
Interesting. Would this mean that their members come from multiple chapters?
>>
>>39906897
Sure, it'd be like Deathwatch except instead of killing xenos it'd be looking after children.
I'm thinking the children, when they come of age, are sent off to chapters in need of rebuilding but don't have an easy way of getting recruits.
>>
>>39906953

Cyborg treatment, if you cant survive even with implants then its dreadnought and if there isnt one vacant then its eternal nap time.

There is no "Too wounded to fight" amongst Astartes, theyre either cyborgs, dreadnoughts or dead.
>>
>>39907139

???
>>
>>39907185
So they focus on learning in general, unlike our lifewatch.
>>
>>39907139
There is a Grey Knight in the omnibus that was somehow too injured, had his major implants removed, and was one of the major medicae on Titan
>>
>>39907139
Another option would be that the various chapters send marines to the Lifewatch to teach them humility and the value of a human life.
>>
>>39907266
They'd probably recruit similar to the deathwatch then, but reversed in some places.
>>
>>39907256
Thats because GK are much more valuable than normal marines.
>>
>>39907173
I think it could be more of on a request basis. All marines live to serve the Emperor, but some feel there are ways they can be more useful off the field. This is most common among the younger marines and the very old.

Ironically, the Lifewatch would be lacking in marines from the more humane chapters like the Salamanders. As a whole those chapters already do more civil services than normal (i.e. don't use civvies near the battlefield for target practice), so by and large there's not a need for them to join the Lifewatch.

>mfw there's one consistently grumpy Black Templar that signed up when he realized he was the only one in his chapter that wasn't a total douchenozzle.
>>
>>39907307
I can get behind this.
>>
Who and how does the Lifewatch recruit? Orphans escaping from their invaded planet? Offspring of chapter serfs? Star Wars style, where they'll take infants that show potential away from their parents?
>>
>>39907487

Continuing with the like-deathwatch-except-the-opposite theme we have going on, they might have white power armor with one shoulder left in the original colours of their chapter.
>>
>>39907947
If we're going the nega-Deathwatch route, members wear their normal chapter armors, but coated in white space-paint to remove any chapter affiliations (and the rivalries that come with it).

They probably don't spend much time in their armor though. White fatigues or maybe scrubs. God, they'd look like eight-foot tall orderlies.

White Towers. These marines are icons of stoic solidarity and dedication to the upbringing of the next generation of space marines. Forgoing all allegiances to their parent chapters, White Towers swear loyalty to the Ecclesiarchy and will never leave their posts as protectors, teachers, and guardians. Shunned by some marines, even other battle brothers within the Lifewatch, White Towers are believed by many to by cowards, faults in their parent chapter's screening process giving them strength of body without them possessing a strength of conviction to match, exploiting a loophole to escape glorious death on the battlefield. However, the Ecclesiarchy is happy to take them in. Despite any marred reputation, a space marine that has sworn their loyalty to you is nothing to dismiss lightly.

Well yeah, but the possibility of dying doesn't really come up until much later in their development, like when they're entering adolescence at the earliest. We can assume that if they've been accepted as initiates they at least pass the genetic exams which confirm they are compatible with the gene seed implants. They wouldn't be subjected to the cybernetic implants until they were old enough and the magus biologis was relatively certain his body would accept them (otherwise it'd be a pretty big waste of skill and materials).

The only probable way for an initiate to bite it during his induction is if the aspirant trial involves combat or personal danger, or if he makes some sort of grievous error during some other point of his training.

Guys, but what would happen if the Chapter's security were compromised and some hostile force harmed some of the initiates, lets say Nids. How would the Marines react?

Well there is a reason no one fucks with the Lifewatch. Those Nids would not survive.

(1/?)
Lord Testudo never came out of his office.
He never took off his helmet.

I once asked, "Why don't you take your helmet off, Lord Testudo?" He replied, I could tell by his voice that he was old, that his scarred face might scare the children. I often visited his office, which was decorated with small drawings from the children, he had a small shrine in the corner. A massive skull of a Carnifex hung from the ceiling, suspended by wire, he never told anyone how he killed it. Behind him was a massive two handed thunder hammer, covered in dust, like Lord Testudo.
I once dusted Lord Testudo as he was resting, like all of the Astartes here, his armor was a gleaming white. Albeit, dotted with various crudely drawn insignia. It seemed that the children had doodled on his armor, I don't think it bothered him. As I got to his pauldrons, I noticed that there was no way to tell which Chapter he was from. Where normally a recognizable icon would be, instead, there was the black outline of a tower. The number III was inside of the tower. I had never seen a White Tower before, but it didn't bother me much. I continued to dust him.

Now listen here, as I lay here in this bed, my left arm missing and covered in bandages. Some call White Towers fools. Even going as far as calling them cowards, turning their back on the Emperor and their duty. What I witnessed two days ago, was not a coward.

Somehow, foul xeno beasts of which I had never seen before had broken into the facility. I grabbed my lasgun, but one fired a strange weapon. It tore my arm right off, and I dropped my weapon. I am ashamed to admit it, but with those creatures right on top of us, I ran. I ran to Lord Testudo's office. He had already heard the screams and was roused awake from his rest. He asked what was going on, and I told him that xenos had broken in. I described these creatures. Lord Testudo's breathing became heavier as I described the beasts. I heard him whisper, "Tyranids."

2/?

There was much hate in his voice. I could tell he had a history with these 'Tyranids'. What should not have surprised me was what he did. I never saw him move an inch, from the first day I arrived, until that moment. Not an inch. But his hand rose from the chair armrest and planted itself on the desk in front of Lord Testudo. Slowly, and creakily, like an old man the Astartes rose from his chair. He turned and gripped the hammer behind him.

I had long thought that it was a mere prop, no way that anyone would allow such a venerated weapon be unused for such a long time.
As Lord Testudo brought the hammer to bear, he said something that send chills down my spine. In his old raspy voice.
"Come my old friend. The Tyranids are upon us once more."

One of the larger Tyranids had arrived now, as tall as a Space Marine and bristling like claws. Luckily it struggled to get through the door. I flinched as it roared.
Lord Testudo did not flinch. He pushed the desk aside with such strength that it slammed against the wall, and he charged with surprising speed. He smashed against the creature and pushed it against the hallway wall, crushing it between the metal and himself. He had no time however, another Tyranid was upon him. Expertly he dodged the first swath of claws and used the spike on the butt end of his hammer to pierce it in the torso. He then grabbed its neck with his armored hand and tore it out.
He ran towards the sounds of the fighting. I was stunned. He moved with such lethal intent, I had almost forgotten that he was one of the Emperor's own Angels.

I followed him, on my way I found a laspistol, slick with blood. There was no trace of a body, only a trail of blood. But still I went on, I eventually found him, following the sounds of bolter fire and yells.
I saw him and four other Astartes fighting off the Tyranids. His voice bellowed, shaking the very ground I stood on.
"YOU DARE HARM THE CHILDREN?!"
>>
>>39909959
>>39910073
3/3 It's my first time writefagging.

---

All I could do was pass out from blood loss. And I woke up here.

The group of children that had crowded around my bed was still waiting for more, as if there was more to the story. Suddenly, they buzzed with activity as soon as they realized that it was over.
"The old man can move?" One child asked,
"I thought Testudo was a statue with a voice! He never moved!"

I shushed them when I heard the sounds of heavy boots on the floor. The medical bay door opened, and there stood Lord Testudo, his once white armor was now covered in the purple ichor of the Tyranids. It smelled like death. He looked at me, and me alone. The children backed away, awaiting some sort of scolding. Instead, he said,
"You all once asked me my age. It was... Three hundred years. Since I last stepped on the battlefield." His voice was considerably softer than the one I heard in the bloodied halls during the battle. With that, he leaned over and placed a small necklace of the Imperial Aquila on the bed, and left.

The next I saw Testudo was back in his chair, his desk was in its right place again, everything was tidy, his armor was a gleaming white once more. Although there were a considerable amount more of Tyranid skulls. He used some as paperweights.
I instinctively grabbed the feather duster with my only hand.
There was no dust on him however. So instead I made sure that he was resting, then I moved every skull I could one inch to the right.

Of course, being a chapter of single dads makes these marines automatically butch/papa bear as possible.

I recommend copius amounts of chest-hair and lumberjack features with a special rule that if one of their initiates gets fucked up by the enemy, the entire army gets Hatred and Preferred Enemy.

Yup. Serfs would take care of the kids and raise them "properly" to prepare them for the aspirant tests. And the ones that fail the test but survive will be taken as serfs. (Obviously the ones that are deemed mutated or otherwise corrupt will not survive the tests.)

The only differences from the usual method are that this requires more resources from the Chapter but also gives the Chapter a better chance at weeding out and preparing the Aspirants.
>>
>>39903037
>What would happen if a Chapter of Space Marines suddently found out their entire new batch of recruits are nothing but infants?

Space Marines choose their own recruits, so if they don't want infants they wont have them.

The Administratum has no say in the Space Marine recruiting practice.

Now here this Baiter has laid out some truly enraging bait. But the surrounding area is used to baiters now, which means that they can only attract the less intelligent prey. Eventually, these creatures will either die out or have to migrate to another area.

Well I think it's got potential, but I suppose high school is a little blase in this day and age.
So how about we take a new direction?
Okay, here we go, the creative juices are in full flow! The Space Marines accidentally smash an old clock while moving house, they go to sleep and they wake in (brace for it) the Old West! There they meet the Emperor who is going through an award "teen" period, and they've got to help him get through it to save the future.
There'll be a totally hilarious scene where Space Marines try and ride Horses but are too heavy for them, and another scene where some blackhats try and drink the Space Marines under the table, but uh-oh, the Space Marines enhanced biology neutralists it, so they just sit dead pan! Maybe a scene where a dreadnought try to walk through the saloon doors, but collapses the whole building! Wooooooowee.

Don't worry, we're refining these ideas. I'm sure we'll have a hit on our hands, or should I say /powerfists/ ;)

Sweet trips.
I thought chapters chose their initiates.

Maybe some of the chaptermasters would come in to watch the nerf firefights every once in a while to shout with the patrons.

>SEE HOW THIS INITIATE'S BRAVERY IS UNMATCHED! SEND REPORTS ON HIS PROGRESS, PATRON, HE SHALL MAKE A FINE RECRUIT!

Yeah, basically. Each of the chapters "scout" promising initiates. In the event of multiple requests, the initiate picks.

Okay, but have each chapter master choose what's in the nerf bolt ammo (because obviously those things work and feel entirely like bolters right?). Wolf fangs, acidic tyranid blood, defensive grenades... They could make it funny and/or painful to see how they resist grimdark.

The battle was over, despite the constant chug of bolter fire mingling with the sharp crack of hundreds of lasguns calling across the air in a chorus of hatred towards those that would stand before the God-Emperor, the battle was over. The Xeno beast that controlled these “Tyranids” had been slain by his hand – and brother sergeant Gaius felt at peace, it was only a matter of time before the creatures were routed and the apothecary would tend his wounded body now that the synapse creature was slain, only a matter of time before he would once again stand by his brothers and do battle in The Emperors name.

Both of his hearts where beating fiercely in his chest and he felt his enchanted physiology struggling to clot the wounds that had tarnished his flesh, some sort of poison was preventing it from properly healing but space marines were made to die slowly – the pain was just a reminder that he was alive and had succeeded in his mission with valor and glory. He had closed his eyes some time ago and limited the outside world to just the most necessary – a meditative state would speed his recovery time and still the tendrils of rage that lingered at the edge of his senses, when the sound came he had woken with the speed of a son Sanguinius, his remaining hand rested on the bolt pistol and he had only partially registered its draw and aim, countless hours of hypnotic sleep-taught knowledge and bolters drills acting well before any of his truly conscious taught was put into the gesture, it was lucky he was wounded still Gaius realized or the girl that stood before him in the gloomy evening sun admits the smoke and slowly falling ash in her tattered clothes would have been dead before he could have taught the gesture through, stilling his mind and forcing the various pre-combat hormones and drugs that began to flood his body to cease he observed the scrawny thing.

Gaius felt the sudden movement and aim of his weapon rock his organs and rub the delicate balance of his crushed rib-cage´s healing, a sharp pain threatened to pull the dark over his eyes as the lose pieces of bone moved freely but he pushed it to the side with a practiced ease of a thousand hours spent in the pain glove – pain was not the enemy pain could be mustered. Letting his targeting retinal fall on the girl again he spoke, opening his mouth he tasted his own blood again, it´s heavy iron tang had mixed with the sour taste of too much adrenaline, but despite it all he spoke, if this thing before him was a trick he must know before lowering his weapon.

“Who goes there?” he calmly stated, his voice coming out as a harsh augmented hiss of static and vox-enchanters, its machine spirits still in-tune with the clamor of battle and the need to carry his voice under the booming sound of artillery and bolter fire. The girl flinched as he spoke – she´d frozen in terror the second he´d drawn the weapon on her, not daring to move not to approach and not to run.

She was thin – malnourished and with nothing more than a simple gray tattered mess of what must once have been a robe of some description adorning her features – hiding most of them in the billowing cloth as it moved by the harsh winds stirred up by orbital fire. Her hands over her ears and her blue eyes filled with tears she spoke to him in return, her voice barely audible and coming with stammers and pauses – like someone that had spent so long without speaking they had forgotten how to form the words. “Are you an angel?” her hand rose to point at the large wings that adorned his back. The wings of his primarch

The wings of the angel.

Perhaps it was the bizarre nature of the question or the disheveled nature of its questioner that got to him, perhaps it was the fact that he could not detect any weapons on the human – perhaps it was simply a faith in the God-emperor that he would not allow a child to be abused as a trick what-ever the case and nature of it he lowered the bolt weapon and let it rest across his side – blink adjusting the vox-transmitters to a more reasonable level he spoke again, settling back into resting willing is flesh to knit itself back faster as to be able to stand when the apothecary came upon them. “I am the Emperors Angel of death child.” The words came almost like a mantra – practiced and said a hundred times over in the halls of his chapter, he was an assault marine descending on wings of fire to smite The Emperors foes with chain blade and bolt, yet somehow he felt it was different this time to utter the words, a tang of guilt? A sour note of something he could not truly place his finger on, it disturbed him that this child affected him so – made him question what he was with but an innocent question.

Another series of distant booms rang out between the ruined hab-buildings and drowned out their words for a few moments as he observed the young girl intently – he wanted to stand, but his legs would not move any more now than the hour before – his spine was damaged somehow and he´d torn several major muscles in the way down from the Xeno creatures head. “Do you know where mama is?” the girl asked once the thunder had ended, she had gone down to the ground during it all and rose with another few fresh stains on her clothes. Slowly moving towards him she seemed skittish, eyes wearily looking around, glancing at the roofs and into the ruined buildings – she missed several spots he noted to himself almost unconsciously, his mind raced for a few moments for an answer – the child was looking for her mother? He struggled with the appropriate response to such a question, mortal issues were foreign to him – should he placate the child? He did not relish the idea of lying; such a thing was beneath him.

“Please, do you know where mama is?”

“No child, I do not know the whereabouts of your matron” his words where whispered, but the helmet blared them out and made it echo amidst the rockcreet walls of the hab blocks and for a short moment Brother Seregant Gaius whished that he had elected not to wear a helmet to the battle, but pushed the notion away as quickly as it surfaced – to do so would be foolish, his voice carried, that was what was important after all. The girl´s eyes welled up with tears as she flinched once again at his words, yet she kept advancing he could not fathom why she saught comfort with him, he was wounded – and the xeno´s were dead, suerly it would be safer to hide in what-ever hole she had crawled out from if it had kept her alive so far. He had no food to give her, or water for her to drink, he was about to voice his concern when a nearby explosion rocked them both and made his organs grind into each other – his vision grew blurry for a moment as phantom pain ran through the stump of his arm.

As his eyes refocused he saw her again, she was close now – standing in front of him, her entire body moving in shakes – if from fear or the subzero temperatures that his suits systems told him dominated the land in the north of this planet he did not know, she did not have shoes. This somehow bothered him, he had seen them before – the scattered refugees of this world and he remembered many of them also lacked boots, somehow that did not disturb him but he felt the hidden tendrils of rage choke at his mind when he saw that one of her feet were swollen and blue – the toes had turned a sickly black – the Xeno´s were to blame for this affront, strength flushed into his veins again from somewhere deep inside – rage, blinding red rage.
>>
>>39912674
Yes, yes...waiting for more.
>>
>>39912674
He made to rise, to fight – to bring death to what-ever foul creature had made this girl loose her foot, but his legs froze again, not due to pain but something else entirely – the girl, the tiny little scrawny thing that was shaking in fear for approaching him had embraced what little of his bulk she could – between her soft whimpers he could make out her words, augmented sense parting them from the sniveling sound humans made when they cried as easily as they would a command screamed through an artillery barrage.

“I am sorry, I know you are hurt Mr. Angel but mama is gone and I miss her” she looked up at him – staring into his helmets retinal targeting system and the eyes hidden behind their impassive green lenses Gaius felt bile rising as he dismissed the eager machine spirits of his armor informing him of the best angle to attack the poor girl with bolter fire as to not wound himself. “Mama says that hugging takes away the pain...” her eyes filled with tears the girl smiled at him. The rage pumping through him died again, it was a curious feeling that rushed through his body – a feeling that he did not dismiss or force down with a flush of hormonal stimulants and the practiced ease of hypno-training. He was angry yes – but the fury was cold as the air around him, the child was still crying – still grasping at the edges of his armor as best as she could – she had been worried for him, him – an angle of death, she was but a whelp yet here she was, hugging a wounded soldier rather than seeking cover.

Unsure what to do, brother-sergeant Gaius did something he had not done for centuries, he wrapped his remaining arm around the girls scawny body and pushed her into his chest in an embrace.

“Be still child” he rumbled, this time it came not as a hiss across his augmented vox-caster, but from his own voice muffled but still audible from behind the mask and helmet.

I like it, something that puts a spin on "children are the future" will definitely be it.

Gaius had been wrong in the end, for while they stood without a beast to lead them the Tyranids were nothing if not resourceful, in their primitive fight or flight instinct – they had chosen the latter, the battle was won in the end but it was a dragged out affair and it would be hours before anyone located his beacon and came for his rescue, they had found him cradling the small corpse of a child that had passed away in the dark of the night, a combination of frostbite and malnourishment had overcome the tiny thing.

Gaius was an Adeptus Astartes and so, he had survived – the biological enchantments that were gifted to him by the master of mankind meant that short of total organ failure he would never truly die. He had spent that lonely night in the ruins of a battlefield doing his best to tend the small child – but he was without locomotion and he was without strength – never before had he felt so weak as when he saw the child draw its last breath.

Gaius was eventually restored – his limbs replaced by steel and his armor repainted, the battle had earned him the right to wear the banner and standard of his chapter – the imperial laurel now sat across his chest and proclaimed him far and wide as a champion of the imperium and a champion of mankind and all her children it was an honor, yet one he rarely spoke about to his brothers, for while the battle had been glorious what followed had been an awakening.

And as he stood there on the battlements of yet another war a thousand miles away he touched the small human skull hanging from his belt.

But it also shows well how for all their superiority...a Space Marine can be powerless.
