You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

You could barely hold your excitement. Today was your official graduation day from Vertical Tank training. Like before, you and the rest of the recruits (now noticeably less than before) were lined up on the parade grounds. However, instead of the simple training jumpsuits you were all wearing, you were now wearing your well earned military dress uniforms, pearl white with some gold trimming and a bit of that Tilean green mixed in.

Up front, the Drill Instructor stands on a raised platform, scanning each and all of you with a piercing glare.

"When I first saw you sorry lot, you were nothing but a pack of useless, mewling BABIES." He grunts as he starts pacing back and forth on the stage, his gaze never wavering. "Couldn't even wipe our own asses, much less drive a Vertical Tank."

You all still stand at attention, though you can tell everybody was uncomfortable at the Drill Instructor's words.

"But today is different." The Drill Instructor pause and actually grins. "Today, you are all proper bloody tankers. Your final task today is to report to the Depot to claim your Vertical Tank, and then to Admin to decide your deployment. Other than that, CLASS DISMISSED."

Finally, a cheer ripples across the gathered vertical tankers as everybody, you included, take off your caps and toss them into the air. The caps then begin to float back down to earth like a snowstorm.

"Holy shit man, we actually did it!" Axel grins as he hooks an arm around you. "Hey, me and some of the other guys are gonna grab some drinks to celebrate. Wanna come along?"

You glance over to Tarin, who effortlessly snatches her cap out of the air and puts it back on perfectly. She see you and Axel and merely shrugs.

"Whatever you want, Roy."

"Sorry, man, business first." You shake off Axel's arm. "Gonna be heading to the Depot first."

"Heh, wanna get the first pick, huh? Can't fault you for that." Axel smiles. "Alfie went ahead to pick a veet for us, as well. If you see her, tell her I'll be right over, okay?"

"Yeah, okay." You nod and turn to Tarin. "Let's go."

Ironically enough, it seemed that all of the graduates had the same idea as Axel, and decided to go party a little first. When you reach the Depot, where freshly manufactured Vertical Tanks are stored, the place is practically empty, save for the rows upon rows of green VTs standing proudly, mostly Strider light VTs and the standard Wolverine medium VT, and all their variants.

"Well, this is a surprise." You see the Depot Quartermaster walk toward you, a clipboard in hand. Her reddish brown hair was tied back in a ponytail, and you could swear she was sucking on a lollipop. Pretty odd decorum for an officer, you think.

"I was expecting you recruits to all be off partying." She continues, not even taking her eyes off the clipboard.

"Yeah, well, we kind of wanted to get the first pick." You explain.

"Looks like you have quite few variants here." Tarin looks around.

"Yep. We always get the top of the line models first!" The Quartermaster grins. "Which one are you interested in?"

M2A2 WOLVERINE MEDIUM VT

The mainline vertical tank for all Tilean forces, the Wolverine was designed to have very well balanced capabilities, as well as act as a modular platform for more specialized duties. The base A model sports durable armor and a dual purpose 75mm cannon capable of firing both armor piercing and high explosive shells. However, if the Wolverine has any particular advantage, it is its extremely high mobility for a VT of its weight class.

M2B1 HEAVY WOLVERINE

During past conflicts, Tilea quickly found that there were some situations where even the Wolverine's armor was not sufficient protection. In order to counter this, Tilean engineers designed a Wolverine variant with much thicker armor, making it proof against all but the heaviest weaponry, while still retaining its relatively small size. However, the added weight of the extra armor effectively nullifies the base Wolverine's speed advantage.

M2C3 SIEGE WOLVERINE

Designed as a mobile assault gun, the C model Wolverine replaces the standard 75mm cannon with a much larger 105mm howitzer. This gives it limited indirect fire capability, as well as a huge damage boost against fortifications and infantry. However, while the howitzer is capable of stunning enemy VTs, it has trouble actually penetrating armor.

M2D1 STRIKE WOLVERINE

Taking a separate path from the C model, the D model swaps the 75mm cannon with a high velocity 76mm cannon, giving the D model vastly improved armor penetration capability against enemy VTs, as well as increased range. However, due to the cannon's design, it cannot utilize HE shells effectively and therefore has poorer performance against infantry.

"That is one nice looking cannon, there." You point to the D model Wolverine.

"Of course. Everybody wants the D." The Quartermaster rolls her eyes. "Well, you're lucky you got here second, then. The D models are always the first to go out of stock."

"Second?" You blink. "Who got here before us?"

"Some super shy kid. She picked up one of the B models."

"O-oh! Hi Roy. T-Tarin."

You look up to see the top half of Alfie's head poking out from the VT's hatch, only her white hair and purple eyes visible. In polar opposite to her brother, Alfie was terribly shy, and mildly agoraphobic, if the stories are to be believed. Either way, the poor girl practically spent almost all of her time inside a VT. However despite (or maybe because of) that, she was one of the top scoring VT drivers. Better than even Tarin, in fact.

"Hey, Alfie, what's going on?" You ask. "Breaking your new VT in?"

"K-kinda." Alfie nods. "She's much roomier than the trainer, t-that's for sure."

"Yeah, they definitely did not design those with driver comfort in mind." Tarin agrees.

Well, you could go grab a few drinks with Axel and the others now that you got a VT reserved. Maybe even try to bring Alfie along to help her socialize. Then again, you could go to administration to get your deployment sorted out.

"Hey Alfie, you should come along with us. Axel needs a winggirl, after all." You say. "Plus it's graduation day! You should NOT be spending it hiding in a VT!"

"Mmmmmmmmm, I think I'll pass." Alfie mumbles.

Both you and Tarin look at each other.

"I'll take the top hatch, you take the bottom." She says simply.

"Got it." You nod.

Tarin quickly uses that speed and agility she had developed over the years to clamber up the side of Alfie's VT. Alfie squeaks in alarm and ducks back into the vehicle, trying to button up. However, Tarin grabs the edge of the hatch, preventing it from closing.

Meanwhile, you head over to the bottom hatch, normally used for emergency escapes. Normally, you couldn't open it from the outside, but you knew every inch of the Wolverine. You pull a small multitool and stick it into a tiny port next to the hatch. It effortlessly pops open and Alfie comes tumbling out. Thankfully, you catch her before she can hit the ground.

"You got her? Tarin pokes her head out from the now open bottom hatch.

You give her the thumbs up.

"Waaaaaah...." Alfie winces.

Oh, that's right. The Depot interior was spacious enough that you might as well be outside in open air. Something Alfie apparently didn't like.

"Oh, don't be afraid!" You say happily as you lead Alfie along. "It's just air and sunlight! Neither of these things can possibly harm you!"

"Actually, there's some studies suggesting that extend exposure to sunl-"

"Not now, Tarin." You sigh.

"Sorry." Tarin stops herself.

"It's just... it just feels so UNSAFE out here..." Alfie mumbles, her breathing beginning to pick up.

"There's nothing to fear." Tarin brings an arm around Alfie to bring her close to her. "Well, other than snipers, but that's honestly a very unlikely situation."

"S-snipers?!" Alfie clings closer to Tarin.

"Not helping." You shake your head.

"What did I say wrong?" Tarin frowns.

Fortunately, the club isn't too far. Now with full army privileges, the graduates could now freely enter, and already, you can the sounds of laughing and cheering emanating from the building. Once inside, Alfie seem to visibly calm down a bit, but she's still wary of all the people inside.

"Roy! Tarin!" Axel saunters over, obviously a little tipsy with a few drinks him. "And Alfie?! That's a surprise."

"I-It's not like I came here willingly." Alfie grumbles and clings close to to her brother.

"WOOOOOOOOO!" Axel whoops as he downs the shot and slams the glass on the counter. "NOW THAT IS WHAT I CALL A DRINK!"

Urgh, goddamn Axel and his liver of steel. You're pretty sure he could drink a gallon of diesel fuel and not even feel a thing.

"Well, man? You gonna step up?" Axel taunts.

"Har har." You frown and down your own shot.

It feels like getting stepped on a VT. The world suddenly blurs and suddenly you can't seem to find your footing and stumble as your stomach burns like you've just drank acid.

"Roy, are you okay?" Tarin grabs you to keep you from falling over.

"Yyyeeeeeaaaaaaah." You hiccup. "Never flt betterrrrrrr..."

"Well I'll be damned." The bartender whistled "Yer both still standing! ROUND 2!"

The entire bar roars in excitement.

Miraculously, both you and Axel were still standing, and now even he was starting to show signs that the Juice was getting to him. You could hardly even make out distinct shapes any more, much less actually see Axel, but you were certain he couldn't be doing much better than you were.

"Hey, uh, guys." The bartender interjects. "We've uh, never gotten to a third round. We're entering some uncharted territory here, and I wouldn't lame either of ya if you want to back out right now."

The both of you drink your third shots simultaneously. Axel just grins and sets his glass down on the bar before collapsing to the ground in a heap. Alfie squeaks as she bends down to check on her brother.

"Gesh I wiiiiiin." You giggle as you set your glass down.

"ROY ROY ROY ROY ROY ROY!" Your hear the bar chanting your name. Looks like you were the new steel liver.

"Well, son!" The bartender slaps you on the back, hard. "You just set a new record! Three shots of Wolverine Juice in a row!"

You just nod as your nausea begins to rise.

"Here, kid, you're gonna need this." The bartender hands you a bucket, which you gladly take advantage of.

"Are you all right?" Tarin asks, concerned.

"Y-yeah. Just gotta-" You vomit again.

"You and Axel get into the stupidest situations." She shakes her head as she picks up Axel's unconscious body while Alfie continues to fret over him. "Are you good to walk?"

"Y-yeah. I think." You giggle.

Tarin just sighs and shakes her head.

"Perhaps you should sleep this off before we pick our deployment."

"Sure, I could use some rest." You mumble as you make to settle down on the floor.

"No." Tarin grabs you by the collar. "If you're going to sleep it's going to be on a proper bed."

"Awwwww, that'sssss no fun."

"I-is he going to be okay?" Alfie asks as she continues to fret over her unconscious brother.

"He's just passed out. He just needs to sleep it off." Tarin points out. "He's probably going to regret it in the morning, though."

"Oh, h-he's going to regret SOMETHING!" Alfie promises.

The thought of the normally shy and soft spoken Alfie doling out punishment on Axel was just too funny, and you break out in uncontrolled giggles.

"W-what's so funny?" Alfie whimpers.

"N-n-nuthin!" You laugh.

Finally, you get back to the barracks. Tarin gently settles Axel into his bed, and leaves Alfie to care for him while she helps you to your own bed.

"All right, let's get you comfortable..."

"Already am." You chuckle as you rest your head against Tarin's shoulder.

"That's just the alcohol talking." Tarin sighs.

"Naaaaaaaah." You assure her.

"Come on." Tarin pulls the blanket on your bed back and fluffs up the pillow for you. She then sits on the edge of the bed and pats it with her hand to guide you in. "You really need some sleep."

Instead of going for the pillow, you aim for the better option: Tarin's lap. You gently rest your head on her slim thighs, you can almost swear you hear Tarin squeak in surprise, though that just may be the alcohol messing with your senses.

"Geez, Roy, always having to something embarrassing like this." Tarin mumbles.

"Haaaaaaaaaaah. You like it. Don't lie." You chuckle.

"I will not confirm or deny." Tarin tries to look away, though you can feel her fingers lightly stroking your hair.

However, the alcohol steals away the moment from you by finally overwhelming your brain and knocking you out.

---

"Uwaaaaah, w-what are we gonna do in the hangar, Roy?" VT-chan asks in a high pitched voice. VT-chan was being a very naughty girl today, coming in without paint, and just showing off her bare metal hull.

"I gotta go inside you and inspect each and every part." You say as you pop open her hatch.

"Roy, t-that tickles!" VT-chan moans...

---

"Roy."

You eyes slowly open to see Tarin's staring back. Your head is still nestled snugly in her lap.

"Are you feeling okay?"

"I had the weirdest dream." You tell her.

"Let me guess. That naked VT again?" Tarin rolls her eyes. "That you were about to do lewd things to?"

"I think I have issues."

"I think that was evident from fairly early on." Tarin nods.

"Don't joke, Tarin. I honestly have a really hard time telling if you are or not."

"Noted."

"How's Axel?" You ask, trying to crane your head to get a look without having to leave Tarin's thighs.

"Still unconscious. I'm sure he'll wake up soon." She explains.

As much as you want to stay in this position forever, you have to eventually get up, painfully separating your head from her lap.

"I hope you got some sleep as well." You say as you stretch out a bit.

"Don't worry about me." Tarin assures you.

After a quick shower and change of clothes, you and Tarin head over to the administration office, where one of the clerks there greets you.

"Ah, Powers and Richards!" The clerk nods as he digs through a file. "You both graduated in the top ten percent of the class, so you will be given priority for any deployment you choose. That pretty much means you'll be guaranteed to be deployed to your first preference."

You glance at the file, noting the major posts available.

3rd RECON DIVISION "STARVING WOLVES"

In charge of watching the large and mountainous northern border of Tilea, the 3rd Division tends to value mobility and small unit tactics. While the majority of their VT forces consist of light VTs, they do maintain a small force of medium VTs in case they need some extra firepower. The 3rd Division's primary enemy are "bandits" working under the nominal direction of Tilea's northern neighbor, Drachma. These bandits regularly raid Tilean settlements and mines, necessitating constant vigilance and quick response.

4th ARMORED DIVISION "DEVIL DOGS"

Tasked with defending Tilea's eastern border which consists of a combination of open fields and dense forest, the 4th Division often stresses combined arms tactics. While primarily a defensive force, the 4th Division's more specific role is as a reserve unit to counterattack enemy breakthroughs. The primary enemy in this area would be Reikland, a militarily powerful nation shrouded in mystery and secrecy.

7th ARMORED DIVISION "DESERT RATS"

Stationed on Tilea's western border, which mostly consists of open desert, the 7th Division stresses the use of massed, mobile armor formations, often with little reliance on infantry support. The primary enemy in this area is the Caliphate of Alin. A desert kingdom that continually prods Tilea's borders for weaknesses, and vies for the return of territory lost in a long ago war.

>>39865240
we would be fighting raiders likely using a combo of light VT's with support
>>
>>39865181
Or we can always go the way of the Hellcat and go with lots of speed, and little armor.
>>
>>39865248
And the D variant was not made to fight infantry in close quarters.

Have you forgotten which variant we pilot?

The one without any way to fight infantry...

>>39865257
So you just want to plink and snipe with a high velocity anti tank gun at single infantry then?
>>
>>39865259
no, because that speed helps, but it will get hit eventually, and we don't want to die from a single glancing .50 hit
>>
>>39865267
you seem to think we would be the only VT there. we would be used to take out heavy targets
>>
>>39865257
>the D model swaps the 75mm cannon with a high velocity 76mm cannon, giving the D model vastly improved armor penetration capability against enemy VTs, as well as increased range.

Then why are we even using the D variant then? Its not rocket science people. I'm am sincerely sorry you won't get your bonus but come the fuck on.

>4th Division

If you wanted to fight in the mountains you should have voted for the A variant, but you didn't.
>>
>>39865272
heavy targets being buildings and bunkers and fortifications, which we can't do because we CANNOT FIRE HE

or do you not understand how guerrilla warfare works?
>>
>>39865273
you know that at some point they are going to send in a super heavy when they invade in force that only we can hurt that is how this shit works we work at any of the places
>>
>>39865166
VTs have become the dominant offensive vehicle, though wheeled and tracked vehicles are still used for support roles.

>>39865012
"So how about it, Tarin? Should we join up with the Devil Dogs?" You ask. The 4th had a very long and proud history defending Tilea's western border from incursions from various regional neighbors, particularly from Reikland. They were perhaps the most famous of all of Tilea's VT divisions.

"I have no problems with it." Tarin nods.

"All right, we'll go with the 4th." You tell the clerk.

"Yep, that's the post everybody wants." The clerk nods. "We'll make it happen."

Well, 4th Division, here you come. You better get used to being called a Devil Dog...

Background: John came from a more well to do family and studied in a technical university which he studied radio operation and communications. However, he always enjoyed the human psyche more and wanted to be a psychologist but did not want to bother shelling out the cash to go through schooling again so joined a VT training program instead to gain more insight on people and to study people in more natural environment thenn studying theories or in a control enviroment

NAME: Michael "Napalm" Fletcher

CREW ROLE: Gunner

NAME: Nathan "Snowman" Fletcher
GENDER: Male
PERSONALITY: Quiet and reserved
CREW ROLE: Commander

BACKGROUND: A team of identical twins that make an odd pair. Both joined the military to work on VTs, but for different reasons. Michael wanted to fight in them while Nathan wanted to be a mechanic. During training, Michael was so intent on charging into combat that he scared every partner he was given. Instructors were at their wits end until they noticed that a certain VT mechanic trainee was able to calm him down. Nathan grudgingly accepted a transfer to Michael's squad, "if it's the only way to keep that blockhead from getting himself killed." Out of combat, Michael is always looking for his next thrill while Nathan hangs around the motor pool to tune up VTs. In a VT, they make a surprisingly effective pair.

Role: Radio Operator, Advisor

Background: Roped into mercenary work at a young age, Rock never took to combat roles as effectively as some of his peers. I'll be honest, the ones with the longer backstories seem more appealing than those with only a single line (That's just me).

Alex, Rock, and John seem to be the most popular. They're not really "crazy" to the extent of the others, and each seem to have their own good reason for being there; whether that be curiosity (John), aimless progression (Alex), or some form of atonement (Rock).

And I think, of those given, they have the most room for growth of the bunch, which is the biggest plus I can see.
>>
>>39865373
Going to fix my profile now so I don't have to do it later.

Name: John 'Riddle' Tyler
Gender Male:
Personality: Whimsical and a bit odd. He has a habit of saying puns, riddle, and wordplays as he talks to people. Kind of comes off like a inconsiderate, laid back person sometimes saying absurd thing to get a rise out of people but often used as a bit of a facade as he analyzes people. He especially enjoys people with 'quirks' or 'oddities' in their personality since he believes that people like that are ones who often becomes great!

Crew Role: Radio Operator/Maintenance

Background:

John Tyle was born in a well to do family in the capital who have some shares in steel and ammunition production for military arms. With his family's finances and wishes he managed to go through technical school in radio operating/communications. However, he maintained a healthy interest in psychology and how the human mind ticks and after a bid of turmoil with his family they agreed to let him minor in it.

However, he felt dissatisfied with the teaching of theories and controlled environments of study sample, he grew frustrated and wanted to venture out to a more natural environment in which. oddities are free to roam. Convincing his parents to use his major in communications to good use, he volunteered to the VT Program. Under this guise he is free to study the tankers and the crew that support them free of any controlled environment.

He keeps a book to write down things of his surroundings and a profile of their personality. He hopes to write a thesis based on his findings during his time as a VT crew man.

"A person who chooses to work in a small metal death trap voluntarily must have a few screws loose and is a interest worth studying."

I hope this refinement is better.

>>
>>39866353
There are exceptions. I'm a tad biased towards the bigger, more fleshed out entries myself. Alex I'm fine with trading out for Lex, but I do like the whimsical "doing it to do it" characters, which are hardly ever played.

Both. Same reason why I like the Rock entry.

You did a good job.
>>
>>39866375

>>39865521 Ultimate mystery, and there's always rooms for a Stig, though I'd imagine He and Lex would be rivals over who'd pilot it.

>>39865773 Despite being a pretty blatant expy of the actual Rock, his sort of character would be a nice pragmatic foil to the others.
