The sounds of sirens slowly grow from the muted silence. There is a smell of smoke and a harsh heat nearby as a soft glow emanates behind him and the rush of heavy boots moves past. Michael strains his neck looking up, and sees the flashing of the emergency vehicles as the sound slowly fills in and his vision comes into focus. A strange shape robbed in gossamer wings stands in the blurred light, gazing into him with large, blank eyes.
“Get up.” She says, her face unmoving. Michael tries to speak, but coughs on smoke instead.

“Sir, are you okay? You need to get up, this area is unsafe.” The fire fighter says as he helps Michael up and takes him from the billowing smoke.

Michael sits in the back of an ambulance as he waves off a medic.
"No, I'm fine, it's nothing." he says as the medic shines a light in his eyes. A figure seems to appear suddenly in the flash.

"What's the damage?" Killinger says, or at least the hologram of him does, the projectors shimmer on the ground at his feet.

"Pupils are dilated, signs of stress, blood shot eyes. They injected him with something in all likelihood, but we'll need a blood sample for-"

"That can wait." Killinger says, then turns to Michael. "You're safe now, and time is short. Do you know what happened to Yune?"

Flashes of fragmented memories flutter like dead leaves in his mind, refusing to form. "I... can't remember."

"That's to be expected." The medic says as he packs up his things. "Between the trauma and the drugs, I'd say it would be unlikely for you to remember much. We can treat that over time with neural therapy, but it will take a while." He leaves as a security guard asks for him elsewhere.

"The van inside was blown with plasma. If anyone was inside, there's nothing left to examine. Either they killed Yune and wanted to destroy the body, or they took him and want to throw us off." Killinger says as he looks to the building. "The council wants to talk to you about it, but you can take some time if you need it. Either way, we're accelerating events in light of these recent setbacks, so get better quickly."

Michael shakes his head as the hologram disappears. Michael gets up from the back of the ambulance and begins walking down the street to the local buss stop. He slips through the small crowd just as the police begin pushing them back and setting up a perimeter.

He contemplates heading back to the office, but you remind him of its destruction. A warm trickle is felt on his arm, and he looks down, finding a few drops of blood flowing from his elbow as he clutches something in his arms like a child. He had hidden it in his jacket earlier, he realizes.

He arrives to his apartment with his groceries in hand, and the door opens to his voice. He places the bag of bread on the counter and turns to place his coat on the rack, and finds the blood stain on his shirt. He feels under it in search of a wound or a scar, but finds nothing. He presses on his stomach, and there is a shift of movement bellow the skin that sends a sharp pain through his body. He stumbles back to the counter, and his hand lands in a small puddle of dark liquid. He turns to see a parasite crawling its way from the bundle of rags where he thought he had placed his food, which he now recalls he never purchased.

He lets out a short, stifled shout and falls to the floor. When he looks up, it is gone. Replaced with the loaf of bread and a cracked glass of wine. He still doesn't remember purchasing either, but he dismisses the notion. The incident this morning had left him shaken, that was all.

>Have Michael keep your parasite in his apartment

He quickly gets up and puts away the bread in the pantry. He piles some fruit around it and leaves to change into something more suitable for work. He has a meeting to attend, and he won't allow these recent events stop that.

He exits the shower and begins to dress, and he catches a glimpse of himself in the mirror. He turns with a fright as he sees a layer of dark chitin covering his back, but as he looks directly it vanishes. There is a distant voice, almost like a laugh from outside. He quickly finishes dressing and moves to the door, pressing the button for the camera. It displays no visitors, or anyone in the hallway. The audio recorder doesn't detect any sound, but the voice is distinct.

I'm conflicted. Lab is more important, but maintaining cover requires contacting council.

We could just go to lab to gather more info to report to council, instead of just reporting on getting kidnapped.

Michael still has to explain why he cut off the conference call and then ordered everyone to burn everything.

He can just say his memory loss goes back to talking to Killinger, since the ceiling supposedly caved on his head.
>>
>>39854909
Both are good choices...but lab is more interesting, though maybe risky?

>Have him return to the lab

Yeah, only one truck of stuff survived.

But do we know if they managed to fit any of those catatonic test subjects onto said single truck? The Flies were watching the whole time.

If any of them are alive, they might get less catatonic at the proximity of the parasite inside the Michael.

We should have turned Yune into a hybrid and had him assassinate council members.

He tries to find the source of the voice. The walls feel as if they are moving, crawling over themselves.

There is a ringing, and he finds that his phone is in his ear, calling the lab. Someone picks up.

"Sir! Is that you? The top floors were almost totally destroyed, we were afraid you had died."

"I'm fine. Is the lab secure?"

"Everything was compromised. Most of it was destroyed as you ordered, but we managed to salvage some of it. We're airlifting the artifacts to a secure location now. The side offices are still intact, we're running the move from there."

"Good. I'll be over in a moment. Tell the research division I want a full debriefing." Michael says.

"Yes sir."

He hangs up the phone with a click and places it back on its charger. He quickly taps out a number on the keypad on the door, and uses his thumb to make a payment. The automated taxi is waiting for him when get gets to the street.

He sits in the taxi in silence, listening to the distant murmurs in his head. It feels like they've been getting louder, more persistent. He decides to take a nap as he heads to the lab. He feels tired.

You do not yet know the new site's location, but your flies continue to monitor the trucks as they evacuate what they managed to take. A cargo craft has landed near the roof, and humans load crates into it. You peel back Michael's mind against his subconscious protest and pluck at the memories in his head like strings, following them deeper in his mind.

"This is doctor Alex Gilliam, he's head of research and development. You will aid him however you can in addition to your other duties." Secretary Windsor holds out his hand as the doctor holds out his hand. Michael shakes it.

"I hope the new facility doesn't disappoint after being stationed on Path." He says.

"It would be hard to." Gilliam says dryly. "This may be a budget cut, but consolidating our labs should help us in the long run. We won't need to ship around the artifacts every time we want to perform an experiment at least. Speaking of which, I'd like those stored as far from our test subjects as possible."

Michael nods. "I'll have the security office on the top floor cleared out. We can house them there. The labs are in the basement."

They finish their handshake as the elevator dings, and a cargo pallet float in on a mag-lift. The doctor stops them.
"Hold on, I need to inspect them first. These are delicate materials." He says as he carefully slides a box open. Beneath is a transparasteel cube holding a small metallic spiral. Runic symbols cover the strange helix shaped device. He quickly looks it over, then replaces the lead and steel lined covering. "Good. Quickly, take it in with the others in the hangar."

"What are they, exactly?" Michael asks. The doctor follows the crate with his eyes with an apprehensive stare, as if it was on the verge of shattering at any moment.

"We're still not sure. Relics of an ancient civilization found in the expanse. We only have a few intact pieces remaining, along with a pile of fragments. We've been slowly working on translating them, but I'm mostly focused on researching the strange effects they have when introduced to an intense electrical current. One of our first human subjects will also be helping you as an agent. Yune is one of our best. We used one of the smaller fragments to create a kind of implant by connecting it to his ocular nerve. So far results have been very interesting. He claims that he can sense the artifacts when they are activated, as if they're speaking, or glowing, as it were."

The secretary interrupts. "The good doctor here thinks there is a connection between the technology used here, and the technology found on the lunar base during the Colony Wars. Survivors of the facility suffered from similar voices and hallucinations after locating something beneath the surface. They went so far as to claim it told them how to build the weapon that wiped out half the Union fleet in a single shot." He pauses and clears his throat. "Obviously, this is top secret of the highest order. They claimed it could speak to them mentally. Through dreams or visions."

Michael looks confused for a moment. "I heard about the lunar incident in the briefing, but I didn't know about survivors."

"They have been transferred here too. They also seem to be sensitive to the artifacts, although less so. It's why I wanted the artifacts kept as far from the holding cells as possible, so as not to interfere in any experiments." Gilliam says, biting the nail of his thumb.

You examine the script along the artifact. It's a Skyl dialect, from after the revolution.

It makes sense if you think about it. They clearly realized long ago that the artifacts operated on the same principles as the Ceph's thought shell. The same artifacts that somehow were capable of telepathic communication with Seiner and his lab assistants.

Written along the sides are exact measurements and scientific findings with regards to their own psionic research, although it is far behind yours, and mostly concerns to theories regarding their attempt to understand the void crystal technology.

"There were multiple dig sites found along the edges of the expanse. We've already set up plans for an expansion bill. It's sure to pass. The Greens have Mentan at their base, and they'd be jumping at the chance to study unexplored systems, Tories are sold on the notion of being able to flank Commonwealth territory, and the Nationals will ride along as usual, offering an act of debate for a bit before capitulating, so they can say they fought the expenditure. We plan on having some Valen trade deals involved to make it go down better, so they can say it will cover its own cost." The secretary says as he takes out his phone and begins checking something. "Rhinos will veto as usual, but they don't have the votes to mean anything. The Texas battle group will move in within the month, and we should hopefully start finding more of these things, or even the homeworld of this civilization." He holds up his hand. "I must be going, I have a meeting with a representative from Talgo. He says it's of critical importance."

He walks over to the elevator as the construction workers begin hauling in the walls for the labs. They begin hammering in the first of the containment walls. There is a series of loud bangs and the two of them begin to move to the offices.

Michael wakes suddenly to a series of rapid knocks against the glass window. An armed soldier stands beside the taxi with a blockade of armored vehicles in front.

"Sir! This is a restricted area."

Michael takes out his card and sticks it to the window. The soldier looks it over quickly. "Sorry sir, but no civilian cars are allowed in. You'll need to exit the vehicle."

Michael exists the taxi, which promptly pulls out in reverse and moves down the street.

The lab is in ruins. Nearly the entire building has collapsed, crumbled to ash. Several fires smolder around the remains of the crashed air car beneath the surface, and the building itself is clearly unstable, with debris occasionally falling from above. The entire area has been sealed off, with an additional layer of armored vehicles around the building. Just across the walkway is a far smaller building where agents have congregated, and a radio truck sits in the front. He quickly makes his way to it.

Inside the office is busy with agents and filled with crates. People sort through burnt chunks of debris and melted plastic, as well as bodies. Gilliam is standing in a row of charred hunks of unrecognizable flesh picking at a set of teeth.

"This is number twelve, you can see the cap has been melted from the molar here." He says to an assistant as he stands up and removes his gloves. "Fill out the paperwork and take the body for proper disposal. No recycling, proper incineration. For all of them." He waves his glove at the other bodies and catches view of Michael.

"I've been looking for you among the dead all morning. Where in the hell were you, and where is Yune?"

"Me and Yune were in my office and... I'm not sure. I called him in, and there was a... buzzing, I think. Then everything gets fuzzy, and I wake up by the space port next to a car bombing."

"A buzzing, like machinery?" He asks.

"Maybe, I'm not sure. I just remember calling him into my office after reading his report, but, I can't remember what it said, exactly."

He could, were you not scrambling that bit of data. His test results showed increased activity in the ocipital lobe, similar to when in the presence of an activated relic, but there were no relics in the area at the time. This was in addition to his complaints about sensing something in the building.

"I think it had something to do with his investigation."

"You mean his detection in the ally?" Gilliam says. "Yes, that is concerning. Someone appears to hold a far greater understanding of this technology then us. I was going to pass my concerns on to the council, but then we were attacked." He looks upon the cataloged rubble in disgust. "All this research, wasted! We saved the artifacts, but even the prototype interface was destroyed, along with the capture of our only two successful subjects." He looks up to Michael. "Have you heard from the council yet? I suspect they will want a report."

"No." Michael says, "but I was about to call in. They wanted to have a meeting. I wanted to come here first and see if there was any good news to give them."

"Hardly." The doctor steps over several bodies as they are taken by assistants and carried away. "Even worse, the implication of what Yune felt in the ally. Not many people know about this technology, and those that do work for us. He said he felt something, and almost instantly was set upon by an armed gunman."

"I'm sorry, my head is still hurting."

"Clearly. It's amazing you're alive at all. The building took a missile hit, after all." Gilliam sorts over a number of papers as he speaks, signing them with a pen. "But we're just about wrapped up here. We've just about finished burning the bodies, and the artifacts will be shipped somewhere else. I don't know the location of the new site yet."

There are two layers of deception that need to be pulled off here.

We have to have a lie that will convince Gilliams to move into a vulnerable location, and we have to convince Michael to say that lie.

Michael is easier, because we can have a fake order from Windsor to do it.

We can tell Michael we suspect there's a Commonwealth mole in the lab, and the doctor is the first suspect for sabotaging research and leaking info both. Tell no one else of these suspicions, as a kidnapping victim you're the only person we don't suspect.

Get Gilliams to come to Location X, and our trusted agents will take it from there. The Union is counting on you, Michael.

The whispering grows louder, more concise, as if they are speaking, demanding something.
They stop abruptly.
"Hold on. What was this about the ally? I was trying to ask Yune about it when we were attacked." Michael says. The doctor stops for a moment.

"Well, he said he was speaking with one of his street contacts when he felt a presence in the ally. He said it looked like some kind of animal, like a wasp. I told him that was impossible, but he insisted he felt something. He shot at it, and was almost instantly attacked. He took a shredder dart to the arm, this were clearly not some street gang or random mugging." The doctor gives him a serious stare and looks about the room. "Look, this whole string of events have been one impossible event after another. Disturbances in Earth's debris field, signals in the streets of Gemini, attackers from the woodwork. We have prepared for these things, and yet they knew where everything in the building was. They went directly for the labs. These people knew what they were doing, and they knew what they were after."

He glances over his shoulder at a passing researcher, then back to Michael. "I think we have a mole. Someone working from the inside."

Michael shudders at the thought. "But working for who?"

"Who else knows about this technology, and has a vested interest in us not developing it? Who is the one organization that managed to actually weaponise this technology?"

>Agree the Commonwealth is behind it

Oh right. Tell the doctor you want to have a late night meeting, wait for me in this camera-free alleyway.

The trouble is, Michael doesn't seem to strictly outrank Gilliam.
>"This is doctor Alex Gilliam, he's head of research and development. You will aid him however you can in addition to your other duties." Secretary Windsor holds out his hand as the doctor holds out his hand. Michael shakes it.

So it'll have to be some juicy b8. Maybe make it so instead of the doctor being the suspect, have him be the only other trusted person? Get him to this location to be briefed on mole suspicions.

For the record, the Ralighans use verbal language and do not have any formal written script. They do have a formal common language used between the many tribes, which involves the use of a special kind of hollow tree like a giant horn, by having an elder blow into one end while others operate holes cut into the branches. It is used for long range communication. In person, they use the air sacs on their bodies to drum out spoken language, but each tribe speaks its own dialect or language, which becomes increasingly dissimilar the further from you go from any one tribe. Most can understand their neighboring tribes, but otherwise have no organized language.

Should you openly endorse the dialect of a single tribe, of course, it would become more hip then the Asylum Demon in a hula hoop convention.

The doctor is smart enough not to think correlation = causation.

Invasive species happen all the time. Bugs in filthy alleyways are common. Michael looks over at the passing workers, then leans in, the whispers returning as his eye twitches slightly.
"Then we need to find out who it is." He says. "I think I may have some evidence, taken from that van they held me in. I hardly remember taking it, but I managed to stuff it in my pocket just before they left." He says as you fabricate the image of a torn and stained document. The doctor's eyes widen.

"That's great. You can send it to the council-"

"I figured we could look through it first. See what we can get from it. If we do have a mole in the organisation, I don't want to give them a chance to intercept it." Michael says. The doctor nods.

"You're right. I can stop by your apartment tonight and we can search through it. I'll bring a feild kit in case there are any finger prints or evidence on the document itself. You should go speak with the council now, you can at least tell them we still have the artifacts, and Lee was taken before he regressed, so try to fluff his case to sound more successful, after all we don't fully know his would-be status." He moves off and almost immediately begins berating a lab technician for something.

Michael moves to the rear office. There is a small communications area set up where agents are speaking with various crowd control officials around the area. He orders them to leave and enters in the code for the parliament building. The desk officer answers.

"Hello agent Devon, the council were in the middle of an emergency meeting, but they said to patch you through if you were available." The officer says.

The council are seated together at a table, although you recognize the flicker of holograms. They are not permitted to all be in the same room at once, for obvious reasons. You recognize them by name.

Secretary of State Neville Morgan looks harshly across the table as his projection flickers in the light. His false eye is no longer apparent, disguised with a membrane covering.

"Excellent." He says, "We were hopping you were not injured in the attack."

DuPont slams the table, making it all too clear she is present in the flesh, and nearly flipping the table in the process. Your view of them flickers for a moment as the cameras attempt to adjust.
"What in the fuck kind of show are you running? You hang up in the middle of a call to go and burn all of your progress, and then you let someone launch an attack in the middle of the capital district and make off with everything you didn't manage to burn! You have a lot to answer for."

"And he will answer to me, not you." The Secretary of Intelligence, Jack Windsor sits at his table in the flesh, his fingers steepled on the table, and his voice cold as ice. He is far more angry then DuPont at the moment, and Michael's mouth becomes dry. "I will remind you, Alexandra, this is still my department. As is this." He says as he places a piece of paper on the table in front of him. "I received a Code Green this morning, from an agent Dillon Reager, of the internal investigation division of Security Command. He claims to have concerns over the extent of corruption among the ranks of the BFI, and was involved in the raid of the facility. He opened an investigation into it after discovering BFI activity operating without his department's oversight." He pauses, breathing deeply. "Who was aiding someone in his free time, someone who was looking for Lee."

The Secretary of Commerce, a thin man named Nathaniel Anderson adjusts his glasses, a fashion accessory as much as a correctional device in an age of such common corrective surgery. "I have a file on this friend as well, a common hire in the underground for smuggling or outsourcing security. A mister Rogers, I believe. He has been used on many an occasion to secure less than legitimate trade deals with Valen organizations. He has a decent record, very dangerous man, but loyal if you're his employer. His record indicates signs of psychopathy and post traumatic stress, likely stemming from extensive prosthetic enhancement and numerous combat drops in the Commonwealth military. He has since defected, and is wanted by the penal colony Helviti." He taps his stack of paper files neatly on the table after being scattered by DuPont's outburst. "A regular upstanding citizen, really. He dropped from the grid some time ago, only to pop up after something explodes and disappear again."

"We think he's been using an alias, but he has good training and good mods. He's usually gone by the time we get an agent to his location, or our agent turns up dead." Jack says. "We've put up with him because it costs less to hire the bastard then it does to try to kill him. Since we've detected signs of him even taking contracts from the Unity, we've been giving him steady employment. He was last hired to obtain samples of a local intelligent species in the expanse when he went missing for some time, before suddenly showing up with a crate full of aliens."

No shit, this was already explained. Every single full-mod agent goes by the moniker "Smith." The agent on Leeland was "John Smith." They all share the same fake surname. Theseus spelled it out explicitly.

Jack sighs. "Lee was a case of convenience. We needed him out of the public light before xeno sympathy became too strong of a political platform, and we needed a destabilizing event to rally people around the king bill. Sending him to your lab seemed like the perfect rock to hide him under."

"His file indicates he has an excellent grasp of tactics, but poor motivation." DuPont says as she waves a small file around. "He was only passed up by the officer academy due to poor discipline." There is an image of a bunk room in the file she holds. You can see it is a mess. "It was only after his arrest that we discovered his connections to various online communities of dissenters, including several that were involved of the leaking of sensitive government data. Once we swing popular opinion away from a pro-underdog stance we can use that to help bury the incident once and for all, but at the moment we have been able to just insinuate connections to terrorist organizations."

Neville cups his chin in thought. "Then why would he be targeted? Do we have any reason to believe his connections to these communities go any further? That they could have funded a rescue attempt?"

"None yet." Jack says, "But even if we do find a connection, there's still the issue of them going through the trouble of taking Yune and Devon both. Why bother?"

"Perhaps it was your agent Reager taking the initiative?" DuPont says smugly.

"Things aren't adding up properly here." Anderson says. "We need to find the outliers and get them sorted. At the very least, we need to hunt down Rogers and his merry men of traitors." He pauses. "I recommend we deploy a Smith."

The others look almost shocked. Anderson removes his glasses to wipe them with a fine cloth. "Dillon clearly tried to hide Roger's involvement in this, he made no mention of allies in his attack. They are clearly working together. That's your top Sec Com agent and one of the deadliest men alive working together. We even have records of a third person, some spacer security for hire. I don't think this is a job for anything less."

"It takes a unanimous vote to deploy a Smith." Neville says. "Alright then, who's in favor?"

You watch as DuPont and Anderson raise their hands. They look to the other two, and Neville sits back in his chair and raises his.

Secretary Windsor rubs his temples and looks at the screen.
"Agent Devon. I want you to be frank with me. Do you feel that you would be capable, without regards to funding or other constraints, of locating the whereabouts of these traitors?"

You bolster his confidence. Twelve milligrams of confidence to be precise, and the lump in his throat vanishes.

"Yes sir, I believe I can."

Jack thinks for a moment. "Then I vote no Smith." He says finally. "Agent Devon, you are being reassigned. It will take some time for the research division to get sorted, and while they take account for what's been lost and make the move to the new facility, you are to find these traitors and report their location. Your main priority is to discover what their motivations for capturing Lee is, and who hired them to do it. Is that understood?"

Michael sautes, his head launched into orbit from the cocktail of 'confidence' your parasite provided. "Yes sir."

"You are to report directly to me for any outstanding expenses, and they will be arranged depending on their nature. This is not a blank check, I'm giving you this because I want this done with less property damage and loss of life then deploying a Smith involves. Do it quickly, quietly, and efficiently. Once you locate them and get an understanding of the situation, then, and only then, will I be willing to contemplate sending a Smith."

The others nod in approval, and DuPont takes out another file. "As for other matters, we have detected an increase in activity in the Commonwealth's outer boarders. I recommend-"
The feed cuts out.

Michael begins to sweat profusely. He brings his hands up to his head in a panic as he paces the room. The drugs wearing off.
"I can't take on someone like that, that man's a monster! He'd literally tear me in half! Why did I say that, why?" He mumbles to himself, beating his forehead. The whispering has returned. A distant laughter, as if someone were mocking his predicament from a distance. He snaps his head to the window, sealed with the blinds down. The room is nearly soundproof. He checks for any microphones in a desperate attempt to find the source, ripping the drawers of the desk out and scattering their contents.

Oh, the Greens.

The Greens could be behind this. Knowing the Tories buried Lee to rob them of their election victories.

And the Greens would also be sure and arrange a leak to a reliable journalist to set up surveillance cameras that record everything the Smith does, and observe its true nature be revealed. Since we know in advance where it's going and what it'll look like.

The whispering begins again, they hold a command, incomprehensible but undeniable. He knows he is in a rush.
"Sorry, I'll have to tell you later. Meet me tonight at my apartment, we can talk then." He says. Gilliam nods.

Michael leaves the building and reaches into his pocket. He still has his car keys. He moves over to the parking deck and clicks the button, and there is the sound of an engine echo through the concrete halls. It quickly drives up to meet him. He gets inside and tells it to drive, anywhere, selecting a location at random, and he buries his head in his hands. His fingers pull at the skin of his face, tempting himself to dig into his own eyes against the constant voices. He slowly digs at the skin with his nails as if trying to pull you out of his mind, his eyes swelling up.

"Shut up, shut up, shut up!" He shouts as his car reaches the freeway. The voice command beeps in confusion and he breaks down. "What do you want?" It is all he can think to say, shouting it in a raspy voice. The car radio begins playing an upbeat tune with that as the title.

A ghostly hand reaches out, pulling his hand up to the control panel where he types in the address to the BFI office in the capital district. He turns to see your illusory visage in the passenger seat. Too tired and panicked to scream or move, he breaths heavily, his face paling.

"I want you to know more about you." You say. The trailing robe of insect wings envelops the car like a cocoon. The spindly threads of thought spiral around your head like a crown fly off into the sky along your network, and into him like the strings of a marionette.

"I don't know. I won't tell you anything."

"You do. I know what you know, and I know what you don't know. I'd like to know what you don't know, and you're going to help me find out."

The whispers grow harsh and loud, inhuman in effect, but singular in intent. They screech and chirp like a swarm of locusts in his ears. Your enveloping wings become tighter, as if sealing around his neck to strangle him.

"You're not even real. I'm imagining this, the drugs they gave me, or the injuries. I, I need to go to a doctor, that's all." He says with false confidence. He reaches to enter a new address, and you pull out his pen and pin his hand to the armrest. He stairs at it for a moment in shock before screaming in pain.

"I would like to know more about humanity, and you will help me." You repeat as your grip loosens and your ghostly vision fades. Your hand blurs, and it becomes his own. He slowly realizes he can move his hand again, and he carefully pulls the pen from it. It spurts blood, but almost immediately begins to close. He watches in disbelief as the flesh sizzles from the contact of the medical paste.

The voices stop. He turns to look, and he is at the curb of the BFI building. The wound is gone, with only a small trace of blood pooled on the synthetic leather to remind him it was, in fact, real.

He gets out from his car, and it speeds off to find a parking deck. The knowledge you want fills his mind with burning questions, and your mind moves around him, comforting this time, like an enveloping warmth.

"Let me know if you need a hand." You say, your face flashing in an advertisement as if part of the hologram. He nervously rubs the fresh skin on his palm, picking off the dried blood.

He enters the building, and there is a quick flash from the top of the door that burns the eyes. A panel on the side of the door flashes his face and name, and a synthetic voice reads from the intercom as the doors open. "Welcome: Special Agent Michael Devon." He walks past several armed guards who quickly glance at him, as if to double check, and then nod.

"Morning, sir." One says. Michael gives a halfhearted wave.

He quickly finds a terminal and logs in, a retinal scanner flashes, burning his eyes again. He always hated the scanners.

The most critical data fills his mind first. Lyle's broker, and all the activity the Union is aware of. That information is the most simply to gather, given his now official duty, so he looks for it first.
He shakes his head in self loathing at the very thought of considering something his official duty, implying he had an ulterior motive.

"You do have an ulterior motive." You say, almost cheerful. "My motive." You help him click the search button and vanish again.

He quickly opens the relevant files and searches for the next one. Data regarding Valen banker activity. They would be an obvious choice for anyone who needed smuggling, however unlikely it would be for Lyle to use that route, so it would be easy enough to excuse. He opens the files.

The next you are unsure of.

>>
>>39864620

He continues to pull up additional files, pulling them all into his data pad. There are reports from a Mars stationed research and observation platform operated by the Space Hazard Tracking agency indicating potential disturbances in Earth orbit. Michael ponders what actually is stable about Earth orbit, but saves the data regardless. It includes information regarding photographs taken of the surface, and plotted orbital paths of tracked debris. They seem to indicate that something of a decent size had crashed in the jungle within one of the radiation zones, but subsequent efforts to locate the object by satellite was a failure. The researchers were able to locate the damage from impact, but no debris. The case was logged as a potential intrusion by an unauthorized vessel and sent to BFI for investigation, where it has since collected dust in the in-box of some over worked office agent. A short addendum reads that local traffic reports were cross referenced with military sensor readings, and found no signs of any craft entering Earth's quarantine zone. The case was then closed as a chunk of volatile debris that incinerated on impact, potentially an unstable gravity drive or fuel tank.

He then pulls up details on the satellite crash reported in the agricultural zone outside the city limits. Initial reports from locals indicated that an unknown object impacted the farmland of a John C. Alder as he slept in his bed. He reports that the event shook his home, and his dog was distressed at the event. Conflicting reports indicate that he retrieved his weapon, an antique combustion rifle traditionally used for hunting, which were reported to local, but not Union authorities, due to their technical legal status, and attempted to locate the object. Upon exiting his home with his wife and three sons, all armed with similar rifles, he heard what he reported as the sounds of an aircar, and the shape of a spiked ovoid retreating into the forest. He quickly gathered locals who had organized into an unlawful militia with the unofficial authorization of local authorities due to low local law enforcement budgets, and organized a search of the forest. The tracks of a human military boot were found not far from the farmland, but neither the ovoid, nor any individuals were found. Local rumors of a Commonwealth invasion triggered automated phone line monitoring systems, initiating a BFI investigation into the matter. The landing size was radiated with traces of heavy water, indicating the use of particle ionization thrusters as found on most high end military shuttles, with enough radiation to indicate the unknown vessel was capable of orbital activity.

There is a page that includes a sketch of the ovoid, which appears to look like a black pine cone, and at least one local testified to seeing shapes fleeing to the tree line, however the local was unable to offer an exact count, any description, and was unaware of the other locals searching the woods and conceded that she may have mistaken them for the unknown figures.

>>
>>39865182
The case remains open, but shelved due to lack of any further evidence. Union drop troopers have been stationed over the area in the event of an emergency, and a number of automated surveillance drones have been deployed within and above the forest in question, due to the risk of Commonwealth or third party incursion. The ovoid has since been claimed to have been retrieved without incident, and testimony otherwise has been met with the claim of hallucinations caused by exotic fuel leakage, with any who witnessed such 'hallucinations' to report to a local BFI medical station established in the town. After this claims of witnesses dropped by 73 percent. A separate report on the potential risks of locals hiding potential contagion exposure has been opened as a result and is pending review.

I'm supprised they seem to actually view eachother as an active threat. I assumed the cold war was for the most part a method of population control. >>
>>39865333
I don't know why the humans would ever have anything but the heaviest armor.

The acceleration of gravity is a constant. The more mass you have, the stronger its pull, so it balances out.

They use a gravity drive to accelerate. It should offer the same acceleration no matter the size or density of the ship.
>>
>>39865355
Perhaps the Commonwealth uses a less massive singularity in the drives used too pull their ships?

He pulls out his own data pad and plugs it in, pulling out the files sent to him about Rogers and the known events of the attack, as well as files on Dillon.

There are extensive files on Lyle, with reports on his numerous augmentations, all of which are outdated and do not include any of the Unity-made prosthetics, and obviously, none of your own. There is also a file regarding known associates, including Coil and the Twins.

Lyle appears to hold a number of arrest warrants in multiple systems, planets, and space municipalities, with the Interstellar Trade Commission having a standing warrant for his arrest. He is wanted for: murder, larceny, assault, aggravated assault, battery, carrying an illegal firearm, using an illegal firearm, carrying an illegal weapon other than a firearm, using an illegal weapon other than a firearm, illegal prosthetic modifications, use of illegal prosthetic modifications in a crime, identity theft, grand theft auto, grand theft astro, reckless driving, speeding, theft, destruction of private property, destruction of public property, attempted use of a warp drive within an atmosphere, illegal use of military drop suit technology in an urban area, trespassing, smuggling, illegal ownership of exotic matter, illegal use of starship weaponry, obstruction of justice, insulting a law enforcement officer, insulting a Union official, assaulting a law enforcement officer, assaulting a Union official, attempted murder, and jaywalking.

Nearly everything holds multiple counts, all convicted due to no contest resulting from failure to arrive in court, except attempted murder, which received a protest via mail reading "If I was trying to kill him he'd be dead."

There is also a small section indicating he had been charged with at least seven counts of treason, all of which had been thrown out due to not being an actual citizen. They were all replaced with illegally working without a visa.

The data regarding Coil and the Twins are far less extensive, consisting only of their given names and estimated ages, which are incorrect. They are listed as accomplices for most of Lyle's own criminal charges.

The Angel's details are similarly limited, with estimations that it may hold an alien drive, but details are unknown. There are multiple pages of agents debating the possibilities of the angel holding a nuclear self destruct device, or worse, a Canderon based warhead. The end of the conversation holds a simple exchange.

"He'd have to be beyond crazy for that."

"He is crazy."

The standing protocols of arrest after that include accommodations for bomb disposal in all attempts to recover the ship.

You also vaguely recall memories of Lyle burning down an apartment building by accident, however, that apears to have been covered by Sec Com as collateral damage due to Dillon's involvement in that incident. The other events were covered under damage to property, due to the use of high explosives instead of incendiaries, which, you note, is a rather interesting loophole in Union law.

The data regarding his middleman, simply known as the Broker, are even more sparse. It is believed to be either a Valen, or a human, and that is the extend of the most concrete data recovered. The rest is mostly guesswork done by criminal profilers, who have concluded that the Broker is most likely native to Path, a Valen banking world, or Gemini, and suspect he is a human male of Taloan or Pathian decent, is active in finance, and is highly capable in the fields of telecommunication and quantum programming, indicating that he potentially holds at least one degree from Mentan, or is self taught.

Dillon's file is also thick, but nearly all of it is classified at the highest level, beyond even Michael's authorization. He attempts to enter the case number he holds in his data pad and waits for the extenuating circumstance authorization, but a moment later it is denied. Michael sighs. This was expected, as Sec Com is dedicated to investigating and eliminating criminal activity within the government as well as anti-government activity within Union boarders, making its activities beyond BFI jurisdiction. He will have to wait for Dillon to be officially expelled from Sec Com, and even then the individual case files will remain classified.

He looks for any other data, finding only the bare minimum, but nothing of any use.

There is also a short file on Jackob, listed as a known criminal security agent, a neutral third party for hire often payed to oversee deals and exchanges between hostile criminal factions. According to his record, he was born to fundamentalists, common on Talgo, and was disowned as a teenager. He served for several years aboard a private trade ship, and quickly entered the smuggling business, where he became a guard for drug and weapons smugglers moving across the boarder. There is an incident logged where the ship on which he served located a sub-light shuttle's distress beacon while passing through the edges of the Hel system and took aboard an unknown individual, but the official captain's records ends there, saying only that he departed with the shuttle at a Valen station, where the log was given to the owner of the station, who then sold this information in exchange for a hold on BFI smuggling stings on the station for the next year and a half.

After his time aboard the freighter he turned to freelance work, overseeing deals between aggrieved parties, including agents. More than one such deals are sealed as classified, linked to Dillon's file.

Huh, and I thought he and Jackob didn't meet till the time they both also met Dillon in dramatic fashion.

Finally, Michael searches for data regarding the Unity. There is a lot of it.

Images of server ships, infected starships from the Chandra incident, and numerous images of the aftermath of attacks and raids, including the obliterated pile of slag where the anti-unity security base you reported to him was once located. Statistics for server ships, cruisers, and drones are all listed in exacting detail, most of which is outdated or false. There are tracers listed for designated Theseus infections, and a vast list of scheduled random inspections for various government software networks, although the list itself is classified on a need to know basis.

The most up-to-date program for detection and removal of Unity programming is available, however, and it includes a small warning indicating the all agents must run it on their personal devices prior to them linking with any BFI network, and preferably after linking to any other network at all. The program itself is much like a virus in its own right, forcing processing power to be split among exponentially increasing and pointless tasks in order to temporarily lobotomize any sentient programming, preventing it from taking any actions to detect or destroy it, in effect paralyzing any AI construct that may be present. The effect only works in software that holds pre-existing programs, and is ignored by software holding only a Theseus version. In such cases, the quantum computer of the device itself must be destroyed by law.

Michael downloads the updated detection and removal software, quickly running it on his device before unplugging it and closing out the terminal. He checks the time, and begins to make his way out of the building. With the updated software, you can have it sent to Theseus later. You send him a quick ping and ask him for details on the nature of the matter.

"Union respond to my infiltration in several ways. The first is regular inspection. All quantum processors must be inspected at least once every six months, with government computers being checked every month. Most government computers are digital instead of quantum so this is less of an issue. Then, they randomly inspect quantum processors on a regular basis. These are the most effective, as they are unpredictable. I typically find methods to circumvent their removal and detection software, and they then update it. It is an endless cycle, although I believe it is quite costly for them to maintain it. Why do you ask?"

You send a summary of the data recovered. There is a quick churning of the data before he responds.

"Interesting, this would be helpful. It typically takes several months for them to enhance the details of their software. I will establish a connection for you to transfer the data whenever you wish. There are several infected private networks on Gemini at the moment that are connected to a usable relay."

You will make sure Michael forgets to turn off his data pad tonight, in that case.

Michael's car drives itself up to the side of the road and he enters, punching in his home address and reclining his seat. His mind is clouded with emotion. Guilt, shame, self loathing, and anger. His eyes dart the interior of the car, searching for you, trying to follow the whispers. Eventually he gives up and tightly shuts his eyes, as if trying to squeeze the voices of your hive out of his mind.

Your ghostly vision appears in the back seat, leaning over beside his reclined head. "It took Lyle much longer to begin serving the hive. You're much more cooperative." You intend it as a compliment to his character, but he bursts into tears. "But you still have more to do." You add.

"What! What else?"

"I need you to make some friends for me." Your illusion contorts into a smile, part mandible, part jaw. It twists in a non euclidean form only possible in his mind that sends a sting of terror shooting through him. "Gilliam seems like he could use company."

You can feel him almost ripping apart his own mind, as if he were trying to crawl out of his own skull. The car ride back to his apartment is a blur, and he walks to the door in a daze.

Think about it, you are an upstanding citizen of the Union who joined to BFI to serve and protect.
You get assigned to some weird black project but hey, it's for the betterment of society right?
And then one day you're office is attacked, you get kidnapped and then you wake up dazed at the spaceport, with barely an inkling of what exactly happened.

And then you start hearing voices. Voices that make you do things that. That loaf of bread? You blink and it's suddenly some horrifying insect half the size of your arm. You blink again and it's just a piece of bread, and you have no idea why you're so scared.

You tell people words that aren't your own, and you've convinced a colleague to come to your flat and you know that whatever is happening to you wants to spread to your colleague.

And then the laughter, the horrible wicked laughter that seemingly comes from nowhere and you just know it in your bones that it is laughing at you. Mocking you and laughing at your helplessness as you've become nothing but a puppet to it.

He enters his apartment and the lights activate automatically. He hangs his coat up and quickly finds the parasite, which has already eaten through a decent portion of his pantry, and wraps it in a blanket. It warps and contorts its form until it appears identical to a throw pillow, although it holds an obvious difference in texture when touched, and appears slightly wet, with a faint sheen of moisture. He places it with the others among his furniture.

He sits in his chair and pours himself a glass of wine, filling it to the brim. There is a tapping on the window. He snaps his fingers and orders them open, and the voice command of the apartment obliges. Several of your flies crawl in and disperse through the room, becoming plastic fruit in bowls, discarded hats, and loose small boxes among the living room.

The doorbell rings, and a hologram appears at the door, giving the illusion of a window to reveal Gilliam in a coat and gloves, his breath visible as he rubs his hands together for warmth.

"There is a guest: Alex Gilliam." The apartment program says dryly. Michael is on this third glass, but your parasite has negated nearly all of it.

"Open the door." He says. The door clicks open and the doctor enters. He hangs his coat on the rack, which extends a plastic claw, and move over to Michael.

"We managed to get things sorted. Any evidence of the facility has been destroyed from its architecture, and the bodies burned. Shame really, I would have liked to have run autopsies." Michael gestures to a chair and Gilliam sits down. "But, the new facility still hasn't been finalized. It's supposed to be upstairs though. I hope it's on the far side. I'd like to actually get some sun for a bit."

You realize "upstairs" is one of the local terms for Gemini's twin. The term is relative, with the locals of one referring to the other to be upwards, or sometimes "the roof" due to its appearance as a ceiling at first glance.

Gilliam looks out the open window and shivers. "Jeez, man, it's freezing out and you have the window open? Mind if I close it?"

Michael slowly shakes his head, and Gilliam gets up and closes it manually before returning to his seat. "So." He says, lightly slapping his knees. "Let's get to work. Those documents, we should start digging through them."

There is a long silence before Michael slowly nods. "Yea. Yea I'll uh, I'll get it." He gets up slowly.

"Something wrong?" Gilliam asks. Michael mutters something, standing in with his eyes shut tightly and a pillow in his hands. Gilliam gets up and slowly moves over, placing his lab kit on the carpet. "Devon, are you alright?"

He slowly moves closer, and around him objects in the room slowly sprout wings and legs, their forms contorting back to their insectoid shapes.

Gilliam places his hand on Michael's shoulder, and he opens his eyes, bloodshot and swollen. "I'm sorry." He mutters.

"What?"

Your flies take flight, and a needle sized claw sinks into the doctor's neck. He swings his arm in a panic, and then stumbles forward, then collapses onto his back.

Michael walks up and places the pillow on his chest, and it contorts into your parasite. It begins to crawl its way under the doctor's collar, and his body tenses instinctively as its mandibles slice into the skin, leaving an oozing blood stain as it slips under the skin.

The body begins to convulse as you connect to the spine, and you feel his mind unfold before you. Michael watches from his seat, pouring another glass of wine. After an hour, the doctor coughs up a puddle of phlegm and slowly rises, grabbing the arm rest and pulling himself halfway up a chair. He looks around the room in a mix of confusion and horror, and he reaches under his shirt and feels for the scar. He contorts his body as he feels the parasite move, settling in its new place, and he looks to Michael with wide eyes and shallow breath.

We should be able to explore the various Union systems and explore the depths of Huron, as well as deal with any crunchy details you want to vote on, but I'll probably need to end it early, like around 3 ish or so, since the week after will be absolutely horrific.

Which is why I ran tonight as well, I figured we could do two quick and somewhat short threads to deal with the many, many side things that we just haven't gotten around to.

We are one big happy family!
>>
>>39866513
We really ought to bake these guys a cake or something when we're done.

Spell out "thank you for aiding the hive, sorry about the whole brain parasite thing" on it in red icing.

>"I don't think you'll remember this in the morning, but that's okay. She'll tell you what you need to do."

Thanks for the early thread QD. Hope we can at least get more things done by tommorow.
>>
>>39866548
Thanks for running QD, having two threads a weekend is pretty awesome. Hope the week goes as painlessly as possible for you, is it going to be that bad? Will you be able to run next weekend?

They can already eat all the imaginary cake they want.
>>
>>39866553
In all likelihood they're either going to get Stockholm Syndrome like Lyle or they're going to die when we no longer have any use for them.
>>
>>39866553
>sorry
The Queen does not apologize to her adopted children.
>>
>>39866567
Obviously we're going to hybridize them.

ONE AMONG THE FENCE.
>>
>>39866567
>Stockholm Syndrome
>Not lovingly helping his adopted mother

I don't think you fully grasp the nature of our relationship with the reputable Mr. Rogers.
>>
>>39866548
Or we could spend tomorrow dealing with interacting with the Ralighans if you'd like. It's really up to you guys.

>>39866562
I will be filling in someone's shift all week, during a month that is the busiest we have been in over twenty years, so I really don't know yet.
>>
>>39866548
So, Lyle actually has met his "fat fuck" of a broker in person, right?

We know things the BFI doesn't?
>>
>>39866579
Fuck son, your boss better be paying you a mint for hours like that.
>>
>>39866578
>pretending there's a difference
Stop describing yourself anon.
>>
>>39866583
You think the Broker would let a psycho like Lyle anywhere near him?
>>
>>39866548
Great work QD
>>
>>39866596
Lyle knows he's fat somehow.
>>
>>39866596
Hey, You shouldn't speak about our own children like that.
>>
>>39866604
Lyle's like the our pitbull, at best. Lovable and adorable, but used, abused and mistreated, and unleashed on our enemies whenever one rears their ugly head.
>>
>>39866548
>We should be able to explore the various Union systems

Finally.

If Lyle and crew are fleeing to the Expanse, it would be nice to know what's actually in all of the Expanse before advising them.

Since we want to lead that Smith into a trap someplace ideal.
>>
>>39866611
Still wouldn't talk about your kids like that. Which is exactly what Lyle is to us.
>>
>>39866583
He has not, but he is known as a reliable source of illegal goods and services, and is known among many high class criminals as the closest thing you can get to a fiduciary in illegal business.

However, you recall Lyle insulting him once by calling him fat, and receiving a more aggressive response then normal, so Lyle assumes he hit the nail on the head, and assumes the man is a whale.

>>39866586
I'm actually quite happy with the hours, I just worry about if I'll be able to prep properly for next week.
>>
>>39866627
Man, Lyle is the best character.
>>
>>39866634
Ah, Thats so funny remember the time we tried to kill each other? So much fun, God Love this quest.

I was wondering:
>>Neural crystal fractals
>Medium
>Further experimentation into the advantages of crystalline neural structures over your simpler organic computing has led to a potential breakthrough. By creating redundant designs the method of interaction with psionic signals can be adjusted, potentially leading to a sturdier defense against psionic based attacks.

>>Neural crystal fractals
>The crystalline structure of your newly adapted neural computers can be altered even further to hold a fractal design, offering new benefits to your thinkers, and opening up new options for other drones.

I didn't see anything that looked like sturdier psionic defenses, or a benefit to Thinkers listed. Are there any?

Do Valen Hyper Gates accept.... IOUs for mass credits?

Like for people on a ship who might not have bank accounts yet, and want to go to the bank and open one?
>>
>>39866627
How are the side projects going?
>>
>>
>>39866655
Crystal Thinkers.
And Quantum Crystal Thinkers.

At least that's my theory.
>>
>>39866699
Neither of which has its existence pr practical consequences indicated whatsoever.
>>
Andromeda, Cygni, and Mufrid are looking scout worthy. If we ever do try to fly some hybrids in on a ship as fake Commonwealth refugees, Andromeda is where to go, and those two are close enough.
>>
>>39866655
I actually forgot to add that in to the research update, but it comes with a passive bonus to resist jamming and other such psionic attacks against your hive.

>>39866684
Mostly finished, but waiting for the next day.
>>
>>39866764
So how long ago was Michael's flashback, if the survivors of the lunar death ray from 100 years ago are still alive?
>>
>>39866831
Nearly two years ago, which coincided with the first wave of colonization in the area and the construction of the various stations and space cities.

The survivors were gathered long before then, however, and had been held in the various research stations before they were moved to the one on Gemini. Not many of them were still around by then.

Life spans are long in the modern Union.
