It’s with a sigh that you set the paperwork back on the desk. Paragraphs and pages and reams of paper, all dedicated to making your life as miserable as possible. A few have some pictures, which momentarily brighten your day till you realize that they’re just charts about boring things.

You turn away from the desk, rotating around in your chair to look out the window of your snazzy office. A few years working up the ranks let you get here, and it would take hell freezing over for you to give it away. The window itself looks out over the centre of the town, a beautiful little place, with the city close for convenience

Of course, your town needs a name. And your job, however horrible it is, deserves one too.

>Town Name, Location?
>You are the Mayor of this lovely little town (+Organization, ++Authority, +Knowledge: CHOOSE)
>You are the local Civil Engineer Union President (++Organization, ++Knowledge: ENGINEER)
>You are the Principal of the local K-12 School. (+Authority, +++Knowledge: PICK TWO)

You slowly stand up, looking out over the town of Roanoke. Ah, Roanoke. Set up on it’s own island, connected only by a ferry and a passenger/train bridge to the mainland about ten minutes away. The cities are slightly further along the coast, with just the ferry landing on the other side visible, so you’re just about the only civilized place for a little bit.

And quite a civilized place it is. Some may call Roanoke slightly over-engineered, and maybe a slightly strange place for the HQ of the Civil Engineers Association, but the city itself is definitely worthy of the presence. The roads are all clean, either straight or gentle curves, with well-placed roundabouts and only two traffic lights in the entire place. Traffic flows smoothly. The rest of planning is also excellent.

So sure, maybe the Union can get out of hand at times, especially with how many there are that live here and work in the nearby cities. But you’ve managed to grow it into a respectable organization, that doesn’t mess with the government needlessly and attempt the usual Union bullshit. In return, they let you have fun with your designs.

>Congrats! A 3+Organization is a large group of people who’re definitely capable and good at what they do.

And of course, there’s a reason you’re the head of the Union, too. After all, it was you who single-handedly planned out and refurbished and rebuilt the sewer system for Roanoke, after all! Of course, you learnt a little along the way, but that’s never hurt anyone!

Someone knocks on your door, and you turn back to face your desk as the door opens up.

“Good morning, President. Some more paperwork from the Mayor here,” your secretary greets you, setting down another stack of papers on your desk. She also picks up your name plaque that had tipped over under the onslaught of paper. “Oh, careful. Here you go,” she hands you your plaque, and you take your time to set it up again, happy to see the “President” before your name.

What is your name, anyway? *adjusts Professor Oak glasses* and are you a boy or a girl?

You finish setting your name plaque into place, and look back to your secretary. “Anything else, Mary?”

“No, sir. That should be all. Uh, actually, scratch that. Mayor’s coming around later to talk about ferry platform renovations.”

Your head slowly sinks towards your desk. “He’s still pursuing that? Despite us saying multiple times that we can do absolutely nothing about that and it’s not under our control.”

Mary shrugs. “Well, I wish you good luck either way,” she glances down at her watch, “and it’s lunch. I’ll be at the Grind if ya need me.”

And with that, you watch her leave. Good worker, Mary. While you certainly helped build up the Union, Mary is the one that really helps you keeping everyone working together without biting at throats or tearing jugulars. Engineers can get real nasty.

Hi Six!

it was nice of you to incorporate the suggested name 'Mary' as an npc
weirdly enough, I imagined the mayor as a woman...

Also, are we going to be interacting with the character classes/archetypes that we passed up? One of the options was to be the mayor, and we didn't pick it but now we will speak with that person. Will we also run into prominent figures fitting the descriptions of the other choices we didn't pick?

You decide to head on and see what the minions are doing. That’s your affectionate nickname for them. For you, they use “twat”.

It’s a very fulfilling relationship.

Heading on down, you enter the office, finding several people already gathered around the table in the centre of the room, chewing away at their own food and listening to Harriete tell a story about what appeared to be some idiot who thought that civil engineers were those who wrote etiquette books.

As some raucous laughter rings out, you take a seat, having grabbed one of the complimentary sandwiches from The Yellow Submarine sitting to the side. You had advertised Free Lunch as one of your policies when running for President. Needless to say, you won in a landslide.

“Oh, hey Jep,” Harriete greets you, brushing some of her hair out of the way as she takes another bite of her own sub, “how’re things? Aren’t you meant to be meeting with the Big Man today?”

You sigh, inspecting your sub for mayonnaise (fuck mayonnaise) before finally taking a bite. “It’s been John for the past seven years, and yes, the Mayor wants to talk. About the fucking ferry, of all things.”

The table collectively groans. Michael, another one of the engineers (skewed towards power management) chuckles, leaning back in his chair. “Seriously? What, does he think we’re the renovation fairies? You get it, ferries? Anyway, how many times is it now we’ve told them about how we’re completely incapable of touching the landing?”

Joan, the oldest of the group, shrugs. “Sixteen times, by last count. I think Mary has a tally list on her computer.”

You shake your head, taking another bite of the sub. “Idiot. But still, we need to indulge him, especially after our last project...”

A tie between playhouse and fusion reactor! What's it gonna be?

For those non-technically inclined, the playhouse will give you some growth opportunities for building in the future. The fusion reactor is what you think it is, for the most part, but the Fuze open-source reactor does require a fuel. Thankfully, just carbon-dioxide as a catalyst, so you're set for quite a while with one of the things.

Joan chuckles sensibly. “Oh, yes, the supposed training grounds for new engineers in the area,” she turns to Michael, “tell me, have you figured out that making a barrel on a lathe isn’t a good idea yet?”

Michael pouts. “Come on, I wanted to try it. There was a guy who had managed it-”

“And he’s no doubt smarter than you, dear, so how about you keep messing with your little plastic soldiers and let me have a go.”

Michael looks even more hurt. “Come on, Joan, I told you they’re Space Marines, not plastic soldiers...”

Joan continues to not give a fuck. “It’s little green army men on steroids. And more expensive than steroids, too.”

The training warehouse that the Union had built on the edge of Roanoke had started off as an effort to actually find a decent place to attempt new designs and have a good workspace for whenever a large project came up. Of course, with the influence of the Union, it quickly became an argument over whether an extra lathe was more important than a basketball hoop. The lathe won, but only because there was only two engineers who actually knew how to play basketball, and people told them to make their own hoop.

“Anyway,” you cut in, “that warehouse just needs a few more things and we’ll be ready to show it off to the public, get some more kids interested in engineering and stuff. What are the specifics that we need to do?”

Michael thinks. “I think a powerline still needs to go up. I can call the fire department and ask if we can borrow their truck.”

Joan nods along with this. “That, and the lathes themselves need to go through their first runs. I’d rather do that before tomorrow, since it’s Billy’s birthday and he’ll want me home.”

The door to the building opens.

“Start what, President Perry? I was just here to inquire about my ferry.”

It’s no use. Slowly, you start re-explaining why you can’t touch the dock.

“Well, then obviously that’d be different-”

“Who do I need to contact to fix it?”

“Uh, the county board of infrastruc-”

You decide to go for a little bit of a walk. Checking your watch, you figure that the group can probably take care of the warehouse on their own. So, you take your time to appreciate Roanoke’s beauty.

You walk down the streets, looking at the buildings that pass by. The Union Office and City Council Office are there, sure, but there are so many others. There’s the shopping district, with Cool Beans and The Daily Grind at either end, there’s that chain restaurant that actually started here in Roanoke, there’s the many toy and clothes stores, all united by a system of your own design.

As you keep walking, into the residential district, the mixing of plain standalone houses and larger villas, based off of the multi-family homes that grew traction in Europe not too long ago. And finally, you’re on the edge of it all, the tip of Roanoke, looking towards the shoreline across the sea.

What a beautiful land. You hope that, for the most part, it never changes.

And there’s a loud bang and a flash of light, and you fall to the ground.

>>
>>39840564

Slowly, you stand up again, quickly checking over your own body for any injuries. Which you don’t find, thank god. Whatever was that, you wonder...

And then you look off into the distance, and find yourself staring off at a mountain. You’d think that being a coastline is a rather static state of being, but it’s either mountains form instantaneously, or you’re not exactly in Kansas anymore, Toto...

You start thinking. You’re genre-savvy, right? You read books, mostly to laugh at some of the idiocy in them but occasionally to enjoy as well.

You continue staring at the mountain. Huh.

With that, you start running back to Roanoke, proper. You might want to talk to someone about this...

Your feet pound the pavement beneath you as you round another corner, the residential district disappearing behind you as you approach the city centre. Sure, you’re not the best runner, but desperate times call for slightly underweight engineers to work on their legs. That’s how you think the saying goes, at least.

And finally, you arrive back at the city centre, to find the Mayor up on the podium set up outside the City Council Office, and several hundred people all looking around curiosly. Not a full turnout, but you have no doubt that some people are still at home, thinking the flash and bang was heat lightning or something

They both raise their eyebrows. “Really? What?”

“Uh, the coastline changed. And it’s brighter than it usually is at this time. Tell me, what do you see in the sky?”

Michael looks up, and his expression quickly goes blank as he realizes what he’s looking at, just as you did on your way back. There’s a sun up there, for sure. Two of them, in fact.

Joan, unsurprisingly, continues to be out of fucks. “So what’s that mean? We’re in some fairy tale?”

“Maybe,” you answer, “but the best thing we can do is getting the Union together. We need to work together, whatever happens-”

“Jeppers!” the sound of your ‘name’ being called out causes you to turn to the voice. The mayor. Your heart sinks through your feet and into the core of the planet, whichever one it was.

“Yes?” you reply.

“As I was saying, there’s no need to panic, right?” The Mayor looks rather panicked himself. “There’s no need to go out of control, right? Everything is gonna be okay, right?”

A few people notice the Mayor’s attitude, and start to get jittery themselves.

Lol, if we solve/fix this so quick I wont be able to complete my personal second objective. Oh well.
>>
You turn to the group of engineers, and prepare one of your speeches.

“Listen, guys. Some of you have noticed there are two sons. Not thirty minute ago I saw the coastline change from shore and shitty ferry landing to fucking mountains. We’re somewhere else, wherever that may be.”

“But we’re fucking engineers. Not only are half of us genre-savvy enough to figure out what the hell’s going on, but we’re smart enough to do something about it. We’re engineers, and we’re in another world. You know what we’re going to do? We’re gonna build. And we’re gonna create. We’re gonna fuck this new world in the ass and take what’s ours. So, you guys ready?”

A few jokingly salute, but for the most part they’re serious, and a general chorus of agreement goes up. They’re ready, for whatever comes.

You turn to Mary, who’s visible in the front row. “Mary, would you be able to go help out the Mayor? He’s going to faint if he continues to stay calm any longer, and he’ll need someone like you there.”

Mary nods, and walks away from the group, already pulling out a clipboard and pen. You turn back to your group.

“So let’s solve this problem we’re in, eh?”

---

”Jeps, sir!”

“What is it, Michael?”

“There’s something you should see, sir.”

You follow Michael outside, away from the horde of engineers, all working together to figure out how to solve their problem with a large amount of the lathes available in the Playhouse.

Soon enough, you find yourself looking across the shore, where you see a boat slowly making its way across. Following it are a few more, slower but much larger ships, of a different make as far as you can tell. The first ship is finer, and seemingly higher quality, but seems rather beaten up. The following ships are rather ramshackle, but very new, as far as your eyes can tell.

“What do you think we should do?” Michael asks, his eye on the ships.

>We need a welcoming party. Prepare a feast.

Actually, people, this is where I need to ask you.

Would you like this realistic, or fantastical? Realistic means longer writing times, so I can research history, figure out where you are in time, and then figuring out the effects of dropping you down. Fantastical is much, much quicker, and assuming you enjoy it should be just as good.

Could be. Though we don't have shore defenses currently, I would think.

City defense will be around the top of the list of things needed to be worked on.

I guess I must apologize to Alternate History Anon if he's around.

”I think we’re going to need a carrot and a stick for what’s about to happen. Say, Michael, do you still know Richard over at the Gun Range?”

Michael grinned. “Sure do. He actually got a shipment of ammunition the other day. And I think I’ve got a favour or two with him.”

“Good. Grab a few rifles. .22 should be fine. Let’s see what this is about...”

---

It’s about fifteen minutes later that the first ship finally runs up on the shore. The engineers quickly work on pulling it up and out of the water, safe onto the land. Once it’s beached, you notice that the boat itself, despite looking like a house boat, is easily liftable by a few dozen people. Strangely light, for something so large.

Either way, you see a few people up on the deck peering down at you. You wave up. “Hell there! Can we help you!”

The figures on top seem to talk with each other for a second, before slowly climbing down. As they reach the ground, you realize that they’re all very short, the tallest only coming up to Joan’s shoulder, who is herself only five feet. They begin to speak, but you can’t understand a word.

“Uh...can you speak English? No, who am I kidding...” you resort to using finger gestures to figure out what’s going on. After establishing ‘bad’, the people start gesturing towards the approaching boats with all they have.

You turn to the Union. “Alright, ladies and gentlemen. It seems our new guests here are having a problem. How about we see off that problem?”

One of the engineers cries out, “We’ll menace them with spikes!” a few of the Dorf Fortress players in the crowd chuckle, before turning back to face the oncoming boats.

As they begin loading their weapons, with Richard the Gun Guy and Michael walking around and making sure that most of them know what they’re doing (Richard getting increasingly annoyed as the engineers tell him that the bolts on the rifles need some lubricant), you turn to your obviously dwarf guests.

They seem to be staring up at you know in a mixture of horror and anger, now getting a closer look at the engineers and yourself.

>Figure out ‘good’, and use it on yourself.
>Shoot these newcomers in their boats. That’s pretty damn ‘good’, right?
>Write In.

>Situation Report: Thirty of the 37 engineers you have are currently armed and ready to fire upon the incoming boats. Michael and Richard the Gun Guy are residing officers.
>You have four dwarves standing in front of you who seem affronted by your very existence.
>You yourself are feeling a bit tired under the two suns.

Figure out goo and use on yourself. Wait until the other ships get close, if they show hostility shoot, if not be very cautious and make sure no one is in range to be hacked apart should they decide to rush us once they come down from ship. Then do diplomatics

Get the dwarves out of the way, prepare a skirmish line on the beach waiting for the other ships to come in. Send one of the unarmed folks to get additional am, O the other 6 need to start digging foxhole for the armed ones. Prepare to defend the beach leave the snobbish dwarves to scratch their heads for a while.

Also .22 should be fine lol. Get bigger guns.

We all make mistakes, Anon.

This next post may well be the last. But it'll be long.

>>39842900
Jep said it with the intention of killing whatever's on the ships, not the ships themselves. But Richard the Gun Guy did bring along a howitzer, if you want to use that. If you know how to use that. He certainly doesn't.
>>
>>39842931

Need 5 men squad, those can be the unarmed ones.

Loader, crew of 2, spotter and chief.

Chief assessment initial firing, crew gives load to loader checks for blockages. If none, loader loads she'll and steps back. I tial shot is generally off target a after lanyard is pulled as the spotter has to make corrdctions. Spotter gives corrections to target to chief who instructs crew in what position to aim. Rinse and repeat.
>>
>>39842763
You glance back at the new boats coming along, and at this point you can actually make out the figures on board...And you recognize them as human. Huh. One of those fantasy genres where humans are wild beasts, then. No wonder the dwarves are looking at you funny.

“Michael!” he hops to attention from near the gun line. “Get anybody not holding a gun to start digging in foxholes, further back from the coast! If Richard has some bigger guns, maybe a scoped rifle, get him some shelter to use it. Send a runner back to town as well, to grab any more of the engineers that may be there, and any volunteers.”

Michael nods, and turns off to get the jobs done. You yourself turn to the dwarves, and indicate for them to move further inland, where you’ve decided to set your stand. They all look rather nervous, asking each other questions, until one takes charge and starts dragging the others off to where you pointed.

You estimate about fifteen minutes till the boats arrive. Peering back out at them, you can’t see any of them looking particularly intimidating in any way, except for one. He stands at the bow of one of the ships, wearing what seems to be leather and fur armor, along with a sword slung across his back. You recognize this more as an attempt to look cool on his part, as the sword looks completely capable of being waist-worn.

Slowly closing off your mind from its habit of recognizing tropes, you get to recognizing the danger.

>24 humans in all
>One ‘boss’. Large human, wielding one sword. Properties unknown. Looks confident.
>Two boats, unknown weaponry, or if any at all.

You turn back to the forest, where you’ve seen a few of the gunners setting down their rifles to help excavate the foxholes further. One digger has actually unrolled a plan for WWI style trenches, and is guiding the other diggers in their efforts.

You also notice Richard the Gun Guy setting up a howitzer further down field, helped a little by Michael and a few drafted gunners.

>>
>>39843138

Turning back to the boats, they’re about ten minutes away now, though the distance is about 500 metres. You’re no shooter, but you know a .22 isn’t going to be too effective at that range.

>Get Richard on whatever higher-caliber scoped rifle he has, pick off the giant.
>Get Richard to fire a close shot to the ships with the howitzer
>Wait for the enemies to land, and for your own backup to arrive.
>>
>>39843190

ok sure I can get behind that but I think the shell will not explode on contact with water. unless artemis handwaves it
>>
>>39843190

Try for a close shot to the boat with the howitzer.

Best case it lands off course or hits one of the boats and makes them reconsider their hostile approach.

Worst case it blows up and that might still make them pause a bit for reinforceMents to arrive.

The howitzer roars as the round fires, flying up and angling towards the ships. Unfortunately, it doesn’t hit, but the spray of water from the howitzer round gets sent flying up to crash over the bow of the ships. You laugh as you watch the large man get absolutely soaked in water. The look of shock on his face is apparent, even from this distance. It changes to anger, but there’s definitely fear apparent as well.

“WHO DARES FIRE AT ROJASH THE GREAT?” the man mountain roars, drawing the sword from his back. You watch as some strange red marks flicker on it, before he points it towards the beach, and shouts again, “THEN LET YOUR MAGIC BE OVERWHELMED!”

And you watch as a large fireball rolls towards you.

Before you can react on your own, you feel hands grab you from behind and pulling you down into a foxhole, already a few feet deep now, with a few of the Union measuring out the depth and width to regulation (how they agreed on regulation already is part of the magic of Unions you never figured out).

Your eyebrows are slightly singed from the fireball, but no more is hurt than that.

---

And so, it’s not about thirty minutes later that you finish destroying the boats. A few men manage to get to land, where they find you standing, wearing your fine Union suit, holding a handgun at the ready.

The mountain man, still alive, grins. “So, it’s you then? You’re stealing my territory, mate. This area is mine.”

“Nope. Fuck off. This land, and the land around it, is property of Roanoke.”

“You are Roanoke?”

You hesitate. “No. I am John Erin Perry. I am the President of the Civil Engineers Association.”

“Fine then, JohnErinPerry. Prepare to meet your fate.”

Quickly, before any other tropes can occur, you fire two shots into the mountain man’s chest.

It wasn’t very exciting, admittedly. But hey, you’re an engineer. You’re not here for glorious battle, you’re here for glorious efficiency.

Turning back to the foxholes, you call out, “It’s clear! Grab their stuff and take it to the Playground, we’ve got some more research to do!”

As the Engineers move along, the dwarves finally approach you again, being led by the same that had bullied the others earlier into trusting you.

The dwarf, very slowly, raises its hand. “I speak English little. Torjak Mariss, name. Torjak interested in technology you use to kill. Torjak seen technology like, but not same. Torjak very, very interested.”

You grin. Okay, even efficiency is a little behind a good old fashioned chat with another engineer. So, let’s see how bringing Science to this world will work out.
