There's something between them as well that remains unspoken, which bothers you a little considering that Gin will likely be working with the man who is probably your greatest enemy. You have no idea what's going on in that boy's head, but for now you feel like you can continue to trust his intents.

“I have one announcement to make before we retire,” you call out, rising to your feet in front of your assembled Division. “Starting tomorrow things will start changing here, beginning with your deployments. I plan to secure a small number of rifles for you to train with: each Shinigami in my unit will be familiar with this technology. Furthermore I will be breaking down our unit structure to better accommodate a mixture of rifles and swords, with three-man teams and squads of three teams and a healer. You will receive further instructions tomorrow.”

Gin says his goodbyes for the night before heading back towards Fifth Division's barracks with some obvious hesitation, as if he'd really rather stay. But he's made his mind up, and disappears into the night despite any misgivings he still has.

You simply shrug. “No point, unless we know it'll work.”

That gets a smile and a playful little swagger out of her.

The usual bleakness of Hueco Mundo greets you, but there's something different this time, Something feels off. It's not until you start actively stretching your senses into the moonlit expanse of nothingness that you figure out exactly what it is.

Something catches your attention: an unfamiliar spiritual presence... no, it's not one. It's two individuals who are so similar it was difficult to tell them apart at first. You've never felt reiatsu this dark and heavy before, enough to crush most regular Hollows and maybe even Gillians under its oppressive weight. You feel like they're not that much stronger than you are, but their control is practically nonexistent.

Yoruichi senses it too, her eyes widening ever so slightly to betray her surprise. Even Rangiku with her less-honed spiritual senses shifts uneasily.

Rangiku swallows nervously. “Thanks, Riku... I don't know why, but I really don't want to go over there. I'd be dead weight, even if that reiatsu didn't crush me where I stood.”

“It's okay,” you reassure her, putting an arm over her shoulder. “It'll be fine. I'll be back soon.”

“Good luck,” Yoruichi mouths silently at you before your hirenkyaku carries you across the vast, empty desert.

Tenkotsuki seems to stir in the back of your mind. “This force is simply tremendous... be on your guard, my dear Riku. You may need to use Bankai to simply survive if this thing turns out to be unfriendly.”

Your brow furrows as you increase your speed. “I know.”

As you approach the spot where the tremendous spiritual pressure is coming from, you find a stunning sight: dead Hollows, just lying around the sands in heaps. In the midst of the scene are two figures, who sit silently in the sand. Their ragged brown cloaks make it difficult to get more than a cursory impression of them, but you can tell they're a ruggedly handsome man with dark hair and a young, somewhat boyish girl.

Strangely, none of the Hollows seem to have suffered any injuries. It appears they were all killed simply by the overwhelming spiritual presence.

After only a few minutes it seems that the pair begin to reduce their overwhelming presence to increasingly manageable levels. After perhaps fifteen minutes they feel more like a Captain's reiatsu, or like one of the stronger Lieutenants really cutting loose. Even your “students” seem amazed at their rapid progress. Seems they just needed proper instruction, since such control and discipline don't seem to come naturally to most Hollows.

You can tell that Starrk regrets not being able to learn this on his own, before so many other Hollows died.

“That should be sufficient,” Tenkotsuki tells you. “And if you present that Asauchi to a Hollow, please let me know beforehand. I may be able to help.”

You nod. “Sure, I'll remember that.”

“Remember what?” Starrk asks, confused at who you're talking to.

Sighing, you simply motion for them to follow.

“My, my!” Yoruichi grins, elbowing Rangiku in the side. “Look at what Riku's dragged in!”

“Starrk,” your new Arrancar acquaintance bows slightly. Lilynette also introduces herself, and then Rangiku and Yoruichi introduce themselves.

Even Mila Rose and Sun-Sung seem appalled by the whole story, while you're not sure but you think that Apacci and Halibel are outright furious. Starrk says nothing, but his eyes glint in the candlelight whenever you mention the notion of a betrayal of that nature. For a man whose only desire has been companionship for gods only know how many centuries, that must be a crime beyond all hope of redemption.

“I'm offering to help one of you do the opposite,” you explain. “To become a full-fledged Arrancar, so that you can look out for yourselves when Aizen gets bored of experimenting on Shinigami and turns here. Not to mention the fact that it'll free you from this pointless cycle of killing.”

And she screams.

You can't even begin to imagine the pain she has to endure, but you have to admit you admire the resolve she shows in the face of it. Her focus never wavers, and you watch as the reiatsu pouring from the open wound that used to be her head flows straight into the Asauchi.

Both weapon and Hollow begin to change shape as your companions watch in awe. Even Tenkotsuki is taken aback.

"She... is doing it entirely on her own," your sword marvels inside your mind as Apacci's screams of pain begin to resemble more of a roar of triumph. "To think such a thing is possible. There is nothing for me to do here, my dear Riku, but to compliment you on your choice of friends."

It isn't long before the deer-Hollow you knew as Apacci is gone, replaced by a muscular woman with a bony plate on her forehead and mismatched eyes, each with a colorful tattoo running around them. The horn projecting from that mask fragment is the only trace of her original appearance that remains.

"Check it out," Apacci wheezes, as if trying to acclimate to her own lungs. "Beat that you hairball... snake..."

She collapses into your arms, clearly exhausted by the ordeal, and Starrk throws his cloak over her. You don't point out that the gesture leaves him only his tattered trousers... because especially for a Hollow, it really was thoughtful of him.

"Well I'll be damned," Yoruichi mutters, grinning at you from her seat across the room. "There were a lot of things I expected to see when I woke up this morning... and that was NOT one of them."
