Second Verse, Part 7

It is the Year of Our Lord, 1134.

You are Wilhelm, Lord of Ramla.

And you had just enjoying the company of your woman, Chihirizahd. Had, because a revelation has appeared before you. Dropping your pleasure like a rock and crushing it underneath. And it showed on your face. You could tell from the look of unmistakable pleasure on hers. Mathilde, your little sister. She sat on a chair very daintily. Legs together and hands upon her knees, sitting forward. Her hair carefully tied into a pair of long black braids that trailed over her shoulders, threaded with red ribbon. Wearing a modest dress of white and blue.

The sun had browned her near dark as a Turk. She was a good distance away from where she should be and where you had last seen her, very comfortable in the kitchen of your father's house with one of the yard cats on her knee.

And for the first time since you had come to this land you felt yourself to be truly disarmed. Completely lost for words.

Mohmed still seemed beside himself. Looking from her to you as if you were expected to provide explanation. The best you could do is find a seat. Helped to do so by Chihirizahd's guiding hand.

"Well, that's a warm welcome," Mathilde said, crossing her ankles and sitting back in her chair. Her eyes cast about the room. "Where is that squire of yours?" she asked.
>>
"Our brother," you said, "Is fulfilling his duties." In truth, you weren't sure. But you trusted Hugo further than most thirteen year old boys. No doubt where ever he was he had a good reason for being there. The thought of it reminded you that you were in need of a second squire. You would need to arrange that soon.

"Why are you here?" you asked, turning the question around on her.

Mathilde's brows rose. "Why not?" was all she offered, taking an apple from the tray beside her chair. She bit off a crisp mouthful, munched it with a gnash of teeth.

"At least tell me you came with an escort," you said. It was a long and dangerous road to Jerusalem.

Mathilde's answer was an annoyingly vague shrug. Details were not forth coming. "All that matters is that I am here," she said, "And lucky to have found you. Why, I thought you'd be in a prison cell."

You had been, not all that long ago. Not that she needed to know that.

Before you could get another word out Sir Etienne entered, his squire a step behind. His eyes drifted from Mathilde to you and he gave a disapproving frown. Whatever he assumed about the sight he did not speak on it. "My lord, the Count of Foix sends his fond farewell. He takes to ship this very hour, to return to his lands and prepare for the day you spoke of. He leaves you with a gift." Etienne drew from his belt a small emerald ring. Placed it in your hand. Then he looked to your sister again, placed his hand upon his sword hilt and retreated to the doorway, eyes switching between the two of you as before.

The little ring was set with a green emerald stone. A very expensive little gift. You put it away.

"Making friends as ever?" Mathilda said both statement and question, her gaze lingering on Chihirizahd's disheveled and barely dressed figure.

That being said good to see you man
>>
"Does father know you are here?" you asked, breathing heat in every word. The man must be having a fit if he didn't God knows he'd find a way to blame you for it.

The hitch of a breath she took was your answer.

"He doesn't not know I'm here," was her attempt to be clever, accompanied by a smile a more naive man would call winsome. Then her real answer came, drawn by your lowered brow and unimpressed face. "He thinks I'm studying at a convent near Worms."

Idiot. You thought as much. The danger you alone experienced traveling that distance, a grown man with company, all armed for the journey. A lone girl of barely teen years could have been raped, murdered or dragged off into slavery. She was damned lucky. But then, that was the word most used to describe her. Lucky. And you let her know that by the way you rested up a raised fist, and drummed the arm of your chair.

"Well aren't you going to ask why?" she said, her voice now strung a little higher and a little less pleased with herself.

"I'll ask, but the answer had best be a good one," you replied.

She glanced at her feet very quickly before looking up at you through her long eyelashes. Damned girl had learned a girl's tricks playing to your father, and you couldn't say they were ineffective on you. "I heard you had been imprisoned by the king of Jerusalem," she said, "And came to argue for your freedom."

Idiot. You thought as much. Beautiful idiot. Garbled news must have spread about his imprisonment and release. You hadn't thought it would have flown so far or so fast. "I did not come alone," she added with her hands knotting up in her skirts. "Uncle Herman escorted me." Then with a much small voice she said. "I'm not stupid you know. And there were others. Klaus and Marlene, Sir Hector the Saxon, Kissing Joan."
>>
>>39782606

"Foolish, at least," you said. Your Uncle Sir Herman was only a relation by friendship rather than blood. In truth you didn't trust that fat old man further than you could throw his fat old face, least of all with your sister's virtue. These others sound a motley selection. You didn't trust them yet either.

But your sister appeared to be in sound body and mind.

You sighed. "Well, there's nothing I can about that now," you said. That made her smile, an infectious grin you barely managed to resist.

"Well, it's a pleasure to meet my lord's dear sister," Chirizahd knelt before your sister, "My lady."

"Hmph," she looked down on your slave as if she couldn't decide just what she was looking at. But her attention was soon back on you. "So, brother, how have you been? How did you get out of prison? Why did the guards call you Lord Wilhelm?"

She was abuzz with questions. So much that she didn't notice Hugo enter. The boy looked disheveled, having had little sleep, and with a tale to tell.

When he looked up and saw his own half-sister his face knotted uncomfortably and he stepped back a pace, beside Jacques and near behind Sir Etienne. You remembered the two of them had never got along.

"Hugo!" you change the subject, drawing your brother into these little skirmish of conversation, "You look half the devil. What on earth did you get up to last night?"

You saw Mathilde's face go from crestfallen to huffy, cheeks puffed out in annoyance. Your brother came forward with a dry mouthed cough, knuckle rubbing the soft gold down on his chin. The boy was starting to get facial hair. Time to get him a good sharp razor.

"Not much my lord," he said with unusual formality, "Jacques and I had some drinks with the other squires and a wrestling game was had."

Bored young men who had no girls to impress were often prone to such things. You remembered your own squire games. They rarely ended well for you.

"And the victor?" you asked.

Hugo shrugged. "Few remember clear details. All we have are our bruises."

You laughed. The laugh was a little strained. Hugo gave an uncomfortable smile as you rolled your eyes over to the very unimpressed Mathilde. She sat back in her chair, hands upon the arm rests and all but glaring at you.

"He's always been your favourite," she said with an angry pout. You felt a groan in your stomach at that. Then she sat forward. "If I'm wanted you might find me at the Lion's Head," she spoke before slipping out of her chair. As she was about to leave she glared at you over her shoulder. "If I'm wanted." She said again.

You grab her by the arm and pull her back. She casts you an outraged look, squirms in your grip. Near drives her elbow into your gut but for the fact you catch it.

"Hold still Matty," you ordered, pulling her close. She wiggled a little as you wrapped your arms about her, but eventually she gave up with a frustrated little huff. "You are a member of my family and thus my responsibility. You go no where."

She was looking about the room, face blushing deep with embarrassment.

You kissed the top of her head. "And you are my little sister above all else. Fool I'd be to let you out of my sight." If anything that only furthered her embarrassment. She looked like she might cry tears of frustration. Still, you loosened your grip. Allowed her to slide out of it.

"I am a lord now," you said, "And have a few small matters to attend to before we depart. When we leave the city shortly, and you will be with me when we go, it will be to my holdings in Ramla." She was still red faced but you got a nod out of her. "Now. You'll not run away or cause any trouble. You'll do as I say."

Again, still frustrated but she gave a nod.

You decide you can't trust her outside your immediate eyesight. Ruffling her head, a thing you know she finds annoying, you also offer her a smile. "You'll be riding with me today," you said.

Her expression softened a little, a bit of the red faded from her face. She gave a nod that seemed happily given for once. "I shall act in a manner becoming of a lord's sister," she said with a proper little curtsy. She really could turn it on and off. A fact that made her more a handful.

You instruct Sir Etienne to prepare your household for departure. Assemble your men, get them in good order. He nodded and went with Mohmed to execute your orders. Leaving you for the moment with just your family. Chihirizahd turned back for the bedroom.

"I shall pack away your things," she said before disappearing into the chamber. Mathilde frowned after her.

You had to do a number of things before leaving. Visit 'Stylianos' and be sure 'he' was also ready to leave and bid farewell to Lord Gerard. Not a large number of tasks to be sure, but both important.

Your first order of business:

You decide your first order of business is to call on the so named 'Stylianos'. With your squire for company and sister at hand you leave your chambers. A few passing men-at-arms offer you a salute as you pass, and servants likewise stood aside to give you the floor. It was good to be so respected. These people knew you by sight and reputation, and knew you were a man that was obligated respect. A far cry from the freelance that had stood outside the gates and taken Sidon's coin without even remembering much of your face.

Stylianos was housed in rooms far from yours. 'He' was no guest of great importance, though still deserving of some quarter. You knocked upon the door, and it was opened a crack by the tall Englishman.

Ethelred was of the Old English. Most likely born in Greece, child to one of those dispossessed nobles that had refused to bend the knee to King William after the Conquest. He seemed a man filled with natural suspicion. A valuable friend to have considering his master's intrigue. When he saw that it was you he opened the door fully so that you might enter. Another chamber within.

You knocked and a voice answered "Who is it?" The door creaked inward, giving you a chance to see a hint of flesh hurriedly covered by a tunic.

"The Lord of Ramla," the Englishman replied.

Stylianos came out with a flushed face, smiling wide. Her mask was loose in that moment, very much a woman in her pleasure of your visit.

"Oh my lord, a pleasure!" she took your hand very daintily, but as she shook it her masculine forbearance returned, "A pleasure." She spoke lower, pumped your hand and clasped your elbow. A good manly handshake. When she peaked around your shoulder she met eyes with Mathilde, who blushed deeply.
>>
>>39783430
"M'lord," she said to Stylianos with a slight dip. Stylianos merely nodded in turn.

"I thought to tell you we had plans to leave this day," you said.

'He' nodded. "Yes, of course. I'll prepare my things so we might accompany you."

"There's no rush," you said, "I've business still to attend to. Both here and in the city."

Stylianos gave a tired smile. "I am over keen to be gone. Every where I go it feels my steps are shadowed by my uncle. He will have no luck, I lost his vultures back in Acre." Ethelred nodded, making much of the axe he held. No doubt the man had put a bit of force into that. "We shall meet you and yours in the courtyard." He nooded to you and then to your sister, who blushed again, before retreating into 'his' chamber.

Before you left Ethelred took you by the arm. His old lined face cracked a little, some warmth entering that battle damaged old map. "You do a rare thing," he said, "You do us a kindness." That was all he had to say before he released you, closing the door on your back.

Your other affairs were as follow: bid farewell to Lord Gerard, and then visit Sir Matthias to discuss the horse trading operation he had mentioned. And perhaps when you were in the city, a last minute chance to make some purchases.

Either way, enough to keep you occupied until afternoon.

I really hope that the marriage isn't necessary. Perhaps it's just wishful thinking, but I'm enjoying the freedom Wilhelm gives Hugo, and I think it would just be a shame if things were suddenly decided like that without him weighing in his little brother's input on the matter.

But if that's how it turns out, then so be it.

Its more a political marriage than anything else, besides there will go atleast 3 years before they will be married. A lot of things can change in that time. Also it would be good to have some land back in France that isnt at risk of being taken by muslims at every passing moment.

Also if we dont we might piss off Joyce a high ranking Templar and we really cant afford to piss off the Templars.
>>
You decide to finish with your business at the castle.

The guards did not bar your way when you arrived, rather they thought you were expected.

Lord Gerard was in his private chambers, enjoying a performance from Marabru. It seemed the man had changed service yet again, from Toulouse to Foix to Sidon all in as many days. He played upon a lute, a slow tune that Gerard hummed along to off-key. The man had no gift for music. You had found Gerard was in large company in that regard. Still, before speaking you stopped to consider Marcabru's ability.

The man really was something of a savant. Even in so casual a setting playing such a nothing piece his performance was skillful. A pleasant morning's piece. Gerard considered his keep outside, looking out onto the waters.

He turned slow. His large, owlish face seemed thoughtful, near sad.

"My friend," he started, and immediately you felt uncomfortable. He sat, and motioned for you to do the same. He did nothing to acknowledge your sister, neither did he send her away. Across his belly he crossed his hands. "Peer out that window, boy, and tell me what you see." He directed your squire. Hugo seemed visibly discomforted. He crossed to the arrow slit and peered out.

"A large ship," he said, "Bearing colours and arms I don't recognise. Greek I think." He looked back, you could see he was a flutter of nerves. Your own stomach was turning.

"That," Lord Gerard, "Is a ship belonging to Theodore Komnenos. Have you heard of him?"

You shook your head. Lord Gerard smiled. "He is something of a pirate. And a general. And a man of business. Above all else he is a man of influence, and incredibly dangerous."
>>
>>39783683
"And what does this have to do with me?" you asked.

Gerard cast out a hand. "You? You are a peripheral interest. A friend I seek to shelter as best that I can from being caught in a powerful storm. No, this has to do with that Greek bitch. The one who is calling herself 'Stylianos'. Rather, let us call her by her name. Zoe Doukas Komnenos. A runaway bride. You see our rather terrifying friend in the harbour is her betrothed. Her uncle as well, but the Romans keep different ways to our own." You felt your stomach hollow out. "You see Theodore is looking to become Caesar. In time I think he plans to become Emperor. And the truly awful thing is, he very really could. The man commands ten thousand soldiers, and a small fleet. So he is a very practical friend to have."

You felt your heart beating in your chest, your ears.

"His men are already at the gate," Gerard said, "I truly hope you don't do something foolish. It is your most unfortunate habit. Only the grace of god has seen it turn to your fortune."

You look to the doorway.

"Well then I'm sorry to disappoint you," you said with a strained grin. You stood, and drew your Damascus sword. "My thanks for your warning. You have been a gracious host and friend to me in this. I ask one thing. Protect my sister until my return."

Gerard's eyebrows lowered, but so did his chin in a nod. You strode for the door and flung it open, Hugo a step behind you. Mathilde could only watch as you dashed out the door.

It was a matter of minutes rather than hours. You rushed back the way you came, running at full tilt. Men and women both low and high had to duck aside to avoid the pair of you. You turned a corner, coming upon the corridor that hosted the woman you'd known as 'Stylianos'. Men were at her door, Three of them. Unfamiliar men in purple cloaks, with long handled axes and tight scaled chest armour. Beards of red and yellow, they turned at your arrival and spoke to each other in Nordic tongue. One pointed your way.

The door had a large cleft in it. The efforts of an axe stroke. Only a few more would smash it in completely.

"We are on Roman business," one hooted at you in Greek, "Varangians. If you dare, step forward."

"I am Lord Wilhelm of Ramla, German by birth. I have given my word to protect the woman behind those doors. I give you this chance to leave with your lives"

"A German's word is iron and blood," one of the Varangians said in that lilting voice of theirs, "Respect." They saluted with their axes. "But we are Varangians, and no less oathbound."

The three had their axes in hand and you felt a hot train of fear ripple up your spine. Three aside filled the corridor. Big men, armoured well with long handles on those axes. You guessed them to be Danes. Experienced killers and half-pagan.

Hugo seemed a slender shadow at your side. His own sword drawn. Neither of you were armoured. A fight would not last long.

"Are Varangians the sort to attack innocent women?" you asked.

One of them laughed. "We are whatever the Romans need us to be. From here to Ragnarok, we are Death."

Your throat was tight, your mouth dry. For a second time you struggled for words.

"Are-"

But your question wasn't finished when the door burst open.

"Alfred! Britannia!" Ethelred bellowed, his axe a blur. One of the Danes was dead already beneath the Anglish axe, his head half removed at the back of the neck, flopping down onto his chest. The other two staggered back in surprise. Ethelred's axe bounced from helm and turned to bite the arm of his neighbour. He was a flurry, driving his fellow Varangians back. You could only gape at it.

He cleared a space before the door and 'Stylianos' dashed out. Zoe that is, saddle bags over her shoulders and face pale.

She came to you, stumbled and fell. You grabbed her by the elbow. Drew her up and onto her feet.

Damn it. You saw men fill in the corridor mouth. Not Varangians, but common Roman soldiers armed with spears. You looked the other way to a clear path.

>>

>>
You took Zoe by the hand and began to run.

Dread beyond fear filled you as they rounded the other corner. Spear points dropped, Roman soldiers keeping rank. There was no escape.

"Oh God. Oh God!" Zoe cried, hugging herself hard as her legs gave out beneath her. Hot tears poured from her eyes. "Oh Jesu Cristi! Jesus Christ!" She pulled at her shirt and almost doubled over.

Purple cloaked soldiers broke rank to let an armoured man walk in. He wore a spectacular helm, fashioned like a roaring lion. His chest plate was wrought with gold and ivory, a match for the scabbard that held his sword. He had a dark face and dark beard streaked with red, like rust. And he had eyes that had nothing inside them. Not hope, nor love, nor fear, nor hate, not pleasure or even surprise. Like bear eyes they were.

And he sighed.

"Zoe, you troublesome little bitch."

She quivered with hard sobs at your feet.

His eyes turned to you.

"This is the only fool willing to help you? It takes courage to cross me. I respect that."

He smiled. An imitation of human emotion.

"Lord Wilhelm. I've had word of you. A great speaker they say. Dethroned a king with just his words. You are the talk of the Levant. Tell me though, do you think there is a way to talk yourself out of this one?"

As if on cue his men took a single, united step forward. An echoing stomp. The jangle of spear and armour rung out.

We could say that her bodyguard went rouge since he killed a Varangian but we still can't really solve the problem that Zoe is a runaway bride. Its not something we can really meddle in unless we consult Zoe's father. Even if we could her family would suffer the backlash from canceling the marriage unless they had sufficient cause.

We could always duel him but where is our justification first? Unless we say Zoe ran away and became a nun.

"Yes," you said, the word like a muted bell peeling.

Zoe looked up at you, her face a red mess, lips trembling.

Theodore laughed. A long and pleasant one.

"Let this be a lesson to you about hubris. A demonstration of real power," he said, and stepped toward the girl.

"No!" Ethelred roared, turning to face the General.

It was a deadly hiss, the spears coming forward. They took him through the arms, the legs, the shoulders, metal points coming out glittering with red. His axe fell from his hands. He stood like a scarecrow, standing only by the strength of arm of the men who held the spears. He made a noise. Like a croak or a whine. He ran from a dozen points. His eyes were on Zoe. Dying eyes.

Zoe's eyes were wide and mouth open in horror. She could not even scream, her chest was heaving greatly.

One of the Varangians stepped forward. It was a snick of the axe he'd carried that left Ethelred's gaping face rolling across the floor. The man picked it up and threw it to his companion.

Theodore took another step with a smug grin. Now there was something like emotion in his eyes. He looked to you.

"You will watch. You will do that. And you will remember what happens when a Latin tries to involve himself in Roman affairs."

He crouched beside Zoe, stroked her long olive neck. "It is time to claim my bride, and end this nonsense." And then he gently, mockingly, nibbled on her ear as if they were long time lovers.

It was the Varangians that held her down. They pressed her face down on the stones of that hallway. Held her by the shoulders as he pulled down her men's breeches. She fought, thrashed underneath him, resist his touch upon her exposed backside. He pulled himself from under his armoured skirt.

Hugo choked. His eyes large and filling with tears, teeth gritted. Your hand was the only thing that stayed him. Your own horror had left your mind faintly numb. It was all happening before you, as if it was both very close and at a great distance.

The sound she made when he took her maidenhead with that first thrust would be carried to your dying day.

He took her in front of his men, attention devoted to his task. Enjoying it. When he was done he gave a satisfied huff, and finally pulled out. His face was glowing.

Zoe had not lost consciousness. Not once. And when he was done at least, her eyes were open, her body breathed. But he had emptied her, and when one of the Varangians threw her over his shoulder she went limply, like a pair of saddlebags.

Theodore stopped before you and looked you up and down, still bare to the world with his long slick member.

"Never cross my path again," he said, and clapped your shoulder.

They left you and Hugo alone. Hugo dropped to his knees and gave a painful howl, ripping his tunic apart upon his chest. You merely stood, staring at the spot Zoe had lain. There was only a little blood.
-
It was Etienne that found you. Armed and armoured with your men.

"Orders my lord?" he asked.

You looked up at him a dumb animal. He put a hand to your shoulder, moustache tweaking.

"Your men need orders," he said, gesturing to the men-at-arms that crowded around you.

You closed your eyes.

It takes you a moment to find your voice.

"I have business in the city. Sir Matthias. Horse trading," your words are short, clipped, but composed. Some how. You don't need Etienne's help, your feet are steady. Steadier than you thought they'd be. Hugo needed gentler handling. He wept softly as a couple of the soldiers took him up.

It was then that others found you. Sabeen in armour with sword and shield. Maggie hefting an axe. Mohmed and Orlando with swords each. Chihirizahd behind.

"God be good, you are safe," Orlando said, rushing to your side. You push him off before he can hug you. The man stares, backing away. He looked about. "What has happened?"

"Later," Sabeen said, coming over to Hugo.

"But-" Orlando tried, but Sabeen just gave him a glare.

"Later Orlando," she snapped. She took Hugo by the shoulder, her hard glare melting to one of soft concern. The boy's tears settled and he huffed, half bare chest. In his rage he had dug bloody rivets into his own skin. Sabeen led her to Maggie.

It was Mohmed that paused at the sight of the blood stains. Nodding as he put the scene together in his head. Ministrations he left to Chihirizahd's hands. Soft and warm upon the tightness of your neck. She did not say anything, and she did not seem shocked, but she offered you a sad, knowing smile.

Of course, she would know much about this sort of cruelty.

Mathilde came rushing in the courtyard. Hugged you tight around the waist. You could see she had been crying. She even gave Hugo a stiff, awkward hug. As you all walked, yourself still rattled and numb, through the courtyard, you saw Gerard watching from a balcony. He could only offer you a slight nod.

Your party mounted and you let your horse carry you from the castle and into the city. You had spoken off business, but in truth you merely wanted to be rid of this place. A revulsion overcame you very suddenly, a full nausea that crept under your skin.

You turned in your saddle and heaved, vomit splattering down in the gutter. That earned you the hateful eye of a passing merchant. You were in no mood to feel sorry for him. With that bile though went some of your nausea. You wiped the last trail off on the back of your hand, looked around you with sharper, clearer eyes. You knew the way to Sir Matthias, and a touch of your heels to horse flesh had you trotting in that direction.

It was that narrow little avenue you had awoken in drunk one morn. A tidy little house. Sir Matthias stood out the front, stretching his joints, sleeves rolled up as if he had been hard at work within.

You slid out of your saddle.

"Ho, friend!" his smile was bright and cheery, "You're in luck. My wife has just gone into labour!" His face glowed. The man was very pleased with himself.

Your heart sank. Did he know the dangers of childbirth? Your own mother had lost six other children, three before you with one of them being in the crib. A cry came from within, Jehanne loud and painful. It rattled you for more reasons than one. You might have dashed in.

"My mother and the midwife are inside attending to her," he said, "But no fear, there's room enough to make a deal in the sitting room."

He held the door open for you.

"Business can wait," you said, striding past him. You called Mohmed to come up. Froggy visibly paled at the sight of a Saracen. Right now you didn't give a damn. You directed him up the stairs to where the cries were coming from.

Mohmed attempted to enter and Froggy's mother gave a curse.

"No men in the birth chamber!"

Superstitious old witch, an ungenerous thought. You pushed the door open. Damn etiquette.

Jehanne's face was red and running with sweat, her knees raised and lips curled back in pain. Her eyes were running with tears. She was such a slim. Girl. Froggy's be-scarfed old mother gaped at you. As did the old woman on the other side of Jehanne.

"Let my man see to your daughter," you growled the words. Near drew your sword as well. Their shock and outrage turned to naked fear. They fled the room before you. Now Mohmed was free to take the mid-wife's seat.

"Send Maggie to help," he instructed you. You did just that bellowing for the Irish lass. She came up with flying skirts, rushing past you.

"Clean sheets, hot water," he said. It seemed to be all he said as he crouched before Jehanne's spread knees.

Jehanne reached out a hand, eyes twisting up.

"Please," she said, body wracked with pain. Pale fingers outstretched toward you.

You stood in the doorway.

You look on her with great sympathy.

"Mohmed will care for you," was all you said as you closed the door.

She wailed high and sharp. It was a nail against your heart, but you ignored it. You found Froggy waiting, sitting, with cups of wine for the lot of you. Orlando had found a seat, as had Etienne. Noble guests were well treated here. Etienne took a sip of his and rolled the wine around his mouth. He did not seem pleased with it. He voiced no complaint. Orlando did not touch his wine. He just watched you as you took a seat.

Froggy seemed a touch annoyed by the expulsion of his mother, but made nothing of it as he served you a chunk of cheese. It went well with the cheap wine. You were German, and beer was more your drink, so you had no complaints about the servings.

"My father and I do most of our deals with Bedouins. Fine Arabian stallions occasionally come our way," he said, "Mostly we deal with the north circuit, up into Tripoli. It's good money. But we are looking to expand south. We've only lacked a trust worthy partner to assist us. Arrange for agents to sell and protection for our stock. I say if you can do this for us we can cut you in at twenty percent, with a pick of the horses we send south for yourself. Keep them or sell them on your own terms. Your choice."

Jehanne screamed.

"It's a fair offer," Orlando said as he nibbled on some cheese.

It wasn't a rubbish offer at least. You looked to Etienne but the man shrugged. He knew war and little else.

You shook your head. So long as they were reliable you had no problem, even with a Jew.

He drummed his hands upon the desk.

"So is that acceptable? Trading in the spring season, twenty percent of gross in exchange for agents procured and employed by you as well as protection. Sweetened with a pick of the herd. Are we in agreement?" he extended his hand.

"It's a deal good enough for me," you said, taking his offered hand.

Sir Froggy smiled as the deal was struck. You heard Jehanne give a whimpering noise. Ad then, then you heard a cry. A loud, brash, bawling of a strong infant.

Maggie came stumbling down the stairs, her arms red to the elbow. Her hair was curled with sweat and she looked poleaxed.

She smiled.

"A successful birth," she said more through her flaring nostrils than her mouth.

You were first up the stairs with Matthias beside you.

A boy. A blue eyed boy with a soft cap of black hair. A big, burly lad that moved fitfully in his mother's arms. Mohmed stood by the window looking as if he needed a drink. The man looked exhausted. When Maggie brought him a cup of clear water he smiled at her, took the drink.

"An easy birth," he said, raising a hand, "Allah be praised."

That caused the entire room to shoot him an ugly frown. The man retreated a step, smiling awkwardly.

But Jehanne was not angry. Her eyes were only on the babe in her arms, wet eyes and a glowing face. He frowned at her, face wrinkling up, red and angry. What a strange, alien creature a baby seemed fresh from the womb. All covered in blood and squishy.

"Little Alain," she said, touching his chin. Then she looked to you and her face near melted, joyful sobs breaking from her lips.

Mathilde came up beside you. "Oh!" she clasped a hand to her mouth, her own eyes watering. "Oh look at it!"

Women and their weakness for newborns. But then again, you were grinning too.

"Little Matthias," Froggy said, crouching over the mother and child. Jehanne's head ripped up at him, eyes wide and scowling.

"My boy," she said through clenched teeth, "Is named Alain."

Froggy backed up a step, frightened by his wife. You couldn't blame him. She had her teeth bared like she meant to take his throat. But as soon as her eyes were back on Alain the she-wolf disappeared and the mother returned. What glory there was in motherhood.

You leaned on the doorway, feeling wrung out. Turned inside out. This day had been one of awful juxtaposition.

You watched mother tend child, and your heart panged for Ioveta.

But mostly, it longed for home.

>>
About the Romans and the rape.

I'd been planning on introducing Zoe since the very start of the quest, as well as a couple of other characters. I had mapped out plots that would have triggered depending on your starting location. If you had picked Sidon, you would have met her almost immediately. If you had traveled by boat earlier you would have met her earlier. The same as you would have encountered Sir Blaise.

I know that's an unfair way to play it, but I have said in the past that there are things going on in the world independent of you. Her plot was one of them. You met her too late to really do anything. The only chance you might have had, and it was a slim one, was visiting Lord Gerard first that morning. He would have tipped you off early about Theodore's arrival, and you could have ran like hell to escape the city.

Fighting the Varangians could have only potentially got you or Hugo killed. There were no windows big enough for you to jump out of. This is a medieval castle. Windows are rarely that wide. They're designed for both protection and for archers to shoot from. Barely larger than narrow slits. Never mind the fact that Zoe's room was not one facing the outside world. If there had been windows I would have mentioned them.

Your bonus to war there was because you realised fighting wasn't the right thing. Knowing when not to fight is as important as knowing when to fight. You made the right move in that circumstance.
>>
>>39785119

You could have charisma'd it up to the deal you were offered by staying to do business.

>>39785148
She thought she had time when you said you had other business to deal with first, and because of your offer of protection she also relaxed her guard.

Look, I knew the way I ended up playing that there would be players upset by this situation. This came very close to a no-win situation from the outset.

>>39785177
You could have, at any point, told her to take a hike. I had Chihirizahd warn you helping her was a bad idea.

You are just one guy going up against the Eastern Roman Empire, and not just that but your attention was split on an equally important task. Getting involved with someone whose plot would require a lot of investment wasn't going to be anything other than extremely hard.

I don't axe plot lines just because there's a chance they can go badly for you. You can't win every time.

People need to blow off some steam. Rape in particular is a pretty touchy subject. Unfortunately it was a very real danger pointed at noble women in particular in this period. I'm reminded of the Irish Abbess that was raped to have her lands freed up by a right bastard, as well as the exploits of other bastards particularly in Jerusalem.

There's a long passage in one account of the capture of Jerusalem by Saladin's forces that is essentially a monologue about the joys of raping Christian women, holy women in particular. I swear the guy sounded like he was jerking off while he was writing it. It was a first hand account too.

Technically they were already married, so he wanted to take her maidenhead with witnesses to solidify it. He also wanted to send a message to Wilhelm and the Levantine nobility as a whole to never, ever try to fuck with him. The hostility between the Romans and the Levantines, particularly in this period where they were feuding over Antioch, is absolutely insane. They hated each other more than they hated Muslims.
>>
>>39785347

I did kind of want to write a scene where rape was used as a weapon against a woman. It was a real thing back in this period that happened with alarming frequency. Now it wasn't necessarily going to be her, but it was going to come up again and it might come up again - possibly even to a guy.

Rape and the threat of rape was just a basic fact of the day, leveraged against women in every social position.

I thought about doing it off screen once I got to it. But I've never gone 'off screen' before. Sex and violence has always been explicit. This is no different.

I find that faith in God is the strength to handle the darkest parts of life, not to keep us free from darkness altogether. I don't believe God causes direct miracles, only gives us strength to persevere.

The strength of belief in God, Allah or Jesus Christ whoever, will be a theme. One of the reasons Chihirizahd has the strength she does is through her belief in her god.

>>39785546
There's an expression. 'No dice'. It means essentially, sometimes you don't have a chance.

>>39785557
If you say so. I won't judge or make comment on how you react to something. You are completely entitled to your response.
>>
>>39785528
>so I figured they should get a direct statement.
You figured you would just worsen the quest after this clusterfuck of a thread. You took a look at the shit you heaped at us and thought "You know what, I wonder what it feels like to step into that".

Honestly the only thing that can save this quest and you as a QM is a complete retcon of this, but that won't happen, so make sure your will is in order, you'll be needing it soon.
>>
>>39785528
Try to keep the in-quest rape to a minimum. Being surrounded by rage filled anons is not a fun way to quest
>>
>>39785576
>sometimes you don't have a chance.
Hahahaha, oh man thats rich coming from you after this.

Go fuck yourself.

>>39785581
Nor is being in a rape filled quest fun, just like this quest, which is no longer fun.
>>
>>39785581
Yeah, sure. I do understand its a touchy subject for a lot of people. It's not like I'm planning a twenty-four hour rape camp, with tickets sold at the door.

I'll certainly be more careful when and where it happens.
>>
>>39785576
>There's an expression. 'No dice'. It means essentially, sometimes you don't have a chance.
Then don't include it in the game. This isn't a story we read, it's a game we play.
>>
>>39784814
Oh yeah, you also suck at following through with your words.
>>
>>39785674
pls ai niid tu haf de last word pls
>>
>>39785674
That's a fair point actually. I get caught up in typing sometimes and forget that stuff.

(honestly, if I see a vote trending in a certain direction I will start typing up a bit early. It gets me caught out some times when I don't check the continuous voting closely and that's something I have to work on.)

>>
>>39785710
Just caught up and thanks for running.

Its a game, its a story and its also clear we're not some superhero, we dont have the power to solve every problem wecome across.

The only answer is to gather more power in order to prevent this from happening to people we know.
>>
>>39785818
Right now, we're all talk, so we should exercise our sword to where it is ten thousand times swifter than it was in the bar where we cut the dude's arm off.
>>
>>39785829
we can practice swordplay with Etienne on the ship on our way home
>>
>>39785840
And in our free time. Hell, why not archery?
>>
>>39785829
I actually agree.
We cannot rely on Hugo forever
>>
>>39785844
Solomon could teach. Them Nubian be crazy archers. Nubia was pretty much known as "Land of the Bow"
>>
>>39785829
We should probably also study our Strategikon of Kekaumenos

It is pretty much "how to war" the book
>>
Who else is expecting all future threads to be troll archives?
>>
>>39786018
I am just trying to figure out who else we could get to ally ourselves with for Ascalon. Maybe send a letter to the Holy Orders and try get them into it
>>
>>39786029
The holy ordos shouldnt be too hard to convince. Especially if we have Hugo, lay champion of the Templars.
>>
>>39786081
Speaking of Jerusalem. The Count of Toulouse is currently on the way to the city in order to speak with the Queen about her husband dethronement.

Really dont hope it will fuck us over.
>>
>>39786120
Of course it will.
>>
Now, some of you may be wanting to go to war against Byzantium for revenge, and I must say: We only beef with one guy. Our friend is a byzantine. If we go to war with the byzantines, we should do it the righteous and benevolent way, like Jin and Wu.
>>
>>39786124
Can just imagine it

"The King of France is willing to forgive this action if Iovetta marries his son Prince Louis"

Brrrr
>>
Thanks for running HF I personally liked how the thread went. It showed how rough this time period was and how we cant save every princess.

Also Tumblr please go home this is /tg/ we design rape factories here for fun. This fit the story, time period, and general theme of the quest so if you don't like it sucks to be you.

You are here for a hard historical fiction quest and HF has just properly introduced the characters to what was common as all hell in the holy land.
>>
>>39786168
>>
>>39786183
It's not about the rape, it's about how powerless the QM made us in this thread.
>>
We need to go find something to mine and get money with.
>>
>>39786216
For some people its about the rape.
>>
>>39786222
Yeah, that too.
>>
>>39785598
>I'll certainly be more careful when and where it happens.
Too late for that, the damage is long done and irreparable now.
>>
>>39786245
What damage exactly ?

Some 2 or 3 people didnt like it and decided to not follow the quest anymore.
>>
>>39786259
this
>>
>>39786216
Tough shit. We aren't a wizard. We can't action hero our way through dozens of armored soldiers with nothing but our swinging dick.

Powerlessness is how people grow. We put ourselves in that situation by volunteering to help the girl then trying to intervene when we knew we had fuck all to actually help her with. The chances we had to stop it all happened earlier in the quest they just didnt appear to be relevant until this specific thread and honestly thats the way it should be. If we miss an opportunity somewhere I have no issue with it coming back to bite us in the ass later on and you know what we wont make that mistake again.

I understand how in this thread it looked like we had fuck all choice in helping but the time for us to make a real difference in that situation was long gone and we suffered for it and know we know what kind of game we need to play.

Sometimes you cant talk or fight your way out of things. Sometimes things just happen
>>
>>39786259
If they just dropped the quest that would be fine.

Chances are they're going to actively troll it instead.
>>
>>39786289
I am just sad we cant have cute half heathen babies with Chiri
>>
Oh God. We are King Baldwin. We are going to die unmarried and childless, leaving everything to Hugo who will not be up for it and begin the decline of our work
>>
>>39786306
well, not entirely childless...
>>
>>39786316
Shhhh. That black haired blue eyed little boy is the offspring of Sir Matthias and no one else!
>>
>>39786325
He truly was our... Frog Prince.
>>
Remember earlier in the quest when we were all thinking lewd thoughts about Mathilde and Nii-Nii, then Mathilde and Zoe? Such happy times...

Anon our sister is like 12

Sometimes the QM railroads shit down your throat.
>>

Human Crusaderpede.
>>
>>39786797
You are an enormous baby. We were given plenty of opportunities in previous threads to actually do something, but we decided to play the waiting game. We paid for it. Not a lot of us wanted to see the story go down this way, but the thing that stands out about HF is that he actually provides consequences consequences and impacts on every single thing we do. That's what makes the story good; each choice is fraught with tension and meaning. It's mature storytelling. He gave adequate story cues via in-universe information, without revealing what actually might happen because we're only human. We're just a young German floundering in the Levant. If he let us move mountains, then there would actually be less agency in our choices, because ultimately they would matter less.

By the time the Byzantines caught up, there was nothing we could do besides die in her defense. From a certain point onwards, it was futile. This shouldn't be news. If you've been following the previous threads, shit happens. We aren't always capable of handling it. The choice was never lost, it just boiled down to shit and less shit. But since some players actually want to see the story go on, he's not just going to write a post about how Wilhelm dies valiantly (though in vain).
>>
>>39786797
If you're still upset, then do what people are wont to do and start something long term. A plot that will take years to complete but will kill that man all the same. Start with making a contact with a merchant head up to the romans.
>>
>>39786950

Thats what i like. Our friends and allies are mortal and need looking after. We can't just dive into shit all the time to sort it out and expect dice to save the day.
>>
Y'know what really would have worked? Holding a blade against Zoe's throat.

Fuck off back to tumblr. There's nothing wrong with fictional rape.
>>
>>39787741
I think the next thread's gonna be it, we're getting out of this hellhole and going back to Germany by the looks of it.
>>
>>39787775
There have been several incidents where we've killed because we're not okay with rape.
>>
>>39787787
Nigga step it up Alexandria or bust! I fucking called we may have had to up our pol game1 I mean the rape thing is bad but evidence we have to up our Cao Cao even more if we want the best end or at least ascalon

Yeah, we could have got killed because we're not okay with rape. That would have been a good idea.

Fuck off, moron.
>>
>>39787805
Yes but killing rapists is different to killing a supremely powerful lord who IS a rapist

Maybe we could point a certain group of killers in his direction....
>>
>>39787787
Why? Our home is Ramla then Ascalon and then Alexandria

get hype
>>
>>39787854
Cao Cao's boring to play as, I want to play as Sun Quan more.
>>
>>39787901
Sun Quan's whole story is about being a successor though.

How's about we focus on playing Wilhelm?

currently I see wilhelm as a less fighty Sun Ce
>>
>>39787927
Probably gonna get more fighty soon, that is, if HF doesn't decide to rape us.
>>
>>39787901
But anon that's if we die after taking ascalon

>Bastard teaming up with the boy who would be king fighting Saladin with GAR Hugo

Why I almost wish we could have a BAD end
>>

Wrong Baldwin anon.
