Well, welcome to the first thread for Vertical Tank Quest! Be prepared for exciting mech combat action!

Twitter: https://twitter.com/MercCommand

Other Quests: http://pastebin.com/zDJSf53z

You know, there were times where you seriously questioned your decision to sign up with the Army. Now was one of them.

You stand at attention for what seems like hours, along with over a hundred other fellow recruits in the middle of a hot field. Each of you sweating profusely, but refusing to move or show visible discomfort. After all, even though you couldn't see them, you knew the drill instructors were watching you like hawks, looking for the weakest in the pack to pick on. In addition, as if to torture you all, just a few meters in front of your formation was a trio of Vertical Tanks, armored bipedal war machines that were the basis of every modern army these days. The VTs were painted in the typical Tilean Army Green and stood there like statutes, immune to the oppressing heat.

And if you were lucky, you'd have the opportunity to pilot one.

However, that mean surviving training first, which was starting to look like a much grimmer prospect as time passed. Suddenly, a trio of drill instructors, dressed sharply and not looking affected by the heat all, march in. Two of them hang back while the one you presume is the leader steps forward, going down the line of recruits with a criticizing eye. The recruits he passes stiffen and keep their gazes forward in an attempt not to attract his attention.

However, you suspect you might have glanced at him, because the drill instructor comes to a halt in front of you and spins on his heel, bringing his face within uncomfortable inches of yours.

"WHAT IS YOUR NAME, SOLDIER?!" He bellows, hot air and spit blasting against your face.

"ROY POWERS, SIR!" You bellow back.

"WHAT'S A SCRAGGLY LITTLE PANSY ASS LIKE YOU DOING HERE?!" The drill instructor continues to grill you like a burnt sausage. "WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO FIGHT IN THE STEEL BATTALION!?"

You get the distinct feeling that this was your first test.

CODEX ENTRY UNLOCKED

Vertical Tanks

First developed roughly 20 years ago, vertical tanks were first invented and deployed by the nation of Tilea. Since Tilea's northern region was very mountainous, the use of wheeled and tracked vehicles was not practical, which led to the development of legged vehicles, to increase infantry mobility to better respond to attacks from Drachman raiders. Eventually, troops in the field began adding heavy cannons and armor to these legged vehicles, creating the first vertical tanks. Their effectiveness in countering Drachman raids was evident enough that eventually, Drachma and Tilea's neighbors quickly began developing their own vertical tanks.

As the original inventors of the vertical tank, Tilea boasts a large and versatile force of VTs. While they may not have the most numerous or most advanced VTs, Tilea has managed to maintain its military edge through a combination of quality training and equipment.

"I just love vertical tanks... SIR!" You respond.

"Is that so? You wanna sleep with one? Kiss one? Stick your dick in the exhaust?" The DI further grills you as the surrounding recruits try to hide their snickers at the last line.

"You're damn right, sir!" You snap.

This time, the other recruits can't stay quiet, and muffled snickers and giggles can be heard in the background. The DI gives you an ambivalent look. You're not sure if he's angry or impressed by our witty response.

"Well then." He grins wryly and turns to look at the three assembled VTs. "If you want to get to know our VTs so much, you get the duty of cleaning them all out, then. Get a bucket and rag, maggot. I want those three VTs SPOTLESS by next morning!

"Yes sir!" You salute without question. You were definitely not dumb enough to disobey or question an order from a DI, especially since they could drop your ass from the program faster than a sack of potatoes.

"Sergeant Rivers!" The lead DI turns to one of the other DIs standing behind him. "Provide Recruit Powers here with a bucket and sponge! The rest of you, FALL IN."

The rest of the recruits hustle away. Rivers quietly hands you a bucket and rag, and then gives a stony nod at the VTs letting you know to begin work. He then spins on his heels and moves to follow the rest of the group.

"Sir, you're not going to keep an eye on me?" You blurt out.

"It's in your interest to get those VTs prim and proper." Rivers says quietly. He doesn't even have to say the veiled threat behind his words."That's not going to happen if you fuck around."

With that, Rivers silently marches off, leaving you to your work.

Fortunately for you, the first two VTs were relatively easy to clean. You can tell that they were relatively new, the only issues being dried mud clinging to the feet as well as a layer of dust from sitting outside for god knows how long. You manage to get the first two wiped down and clean by sundown. However, it starts to get dark by the time you get to the third one, and realize you probably should have done this one first. It was considerably older, and you suspected that it had actually seen combat, judging from all the dents and scrapes on the armor. It also apparently just came out of maintenance, as in addition to all the mud and dust, there were a lot of extremely annoying oil and grease stains that proved to be much more stubborn in scrubbing off.

"Looks like you need some help."

You nearly fall off the VT in fright and peek over the edge to see your friend Tarin standing at the foot of the VT, bucket and rag in hand.

"Tarin?!" You hiss, as if afraid somebody else was around to hear. "What the heck are you doing here?!"

"Training is done for the day. Figured you needed the help." Tarin shrugged, her red eyes glinting in the darkness.

"Sure, I could use a hand." You nod and Tarin quickly clambers up to the top of the VT with you.

"Okay, where do I start?" She asks.

"I was doing the engine, so you can start with the front. Make sure you get the viewports."

"Right."

The next few minutes are just awkward silence as the two of you clean your respective areas. You've known Tarin since you were kids, and it was both of your dreams to get into the Steel Battalion, ideally together as a crew.

"You know." Tarin finally speaks up. "This is quite nostalgic."

"Hm? How so?" You ask as you wipe off some carbon crust that had accumulated on the exhaust ports. No, you WEREN'T going to stick your dick in them.

"You know, sitting around working on all the random machinery your parents collected?" Tarin says.

Heh, that's right. However, now you were starting to think about home too, all the way back in...

Reminds you of home up in the mountains. Sure, it was colder than a witch's tit, and there was always the pervasive danger of getting caught in a Drachman raid. They weren't nearly as common anymore, but were still a legitimate concern. You both learned to survive out in the wilderness. Sure, the people living in the lowlands generally tended to regard you mountainfolk as a bit crazy and... well... you sort of had to agree considering you were descended from people who thought it would be a good idea to settle down in that beautiful hell in the sky.

"Aw shit, there you go making me homesick now." You sigh.

"Sorry, that wasn't my intention." Tarin replies.

"Nah, it was gonna happen eventually." You chuckle. "Anyways, I'm done back here."

"I just finished the front." Tarin reports.

"Great." You let out a great big yawn. "I think we can still get a few hours of sleep in..."

You then pause when you hear the loud squeak of a hatch being opened.

"Huh, unlocked." Tarin observes.

"Tarin, what are you doing?!" You hiss.

"Don't we have to clean the inside, too?" Tarin blinks.

Huh... technically the DI didn't specifically mention that...

Ice, Slider, Katya. All 3 are part of our harem now, we are not the dominant one.

Wendy (British attaché) is maid/probable harem member.
Konstantina (yandere Russian super witch) is also probable harem member.

>>
>>39719796
>>39719838
Other quests would beg to differ, like ISQ. A large part was Ghost's writing of Frank as such and his favorite tendency to interrupt possible romantic moments with surprise Russia attacks.
>>
>>39719901
ISQ is pandering garbage, which you might enjoy because you're being handed waifus, but there's more to a quest than that.
>>
>>39719901
The issue with ISQ is that there's no personality. In the characters, actions, or writing - it's devoid of many things that could, and would, make it special.

I wouldn't call it bland. It simply exists in a world where there's no taste.

"All right, let's go inside." You say. In truth, you were always curious what the interior actually looked like. You follow Tarin and drop down through the hatch.

As expected, the interior of the VT was extremely cramped, most of the space being taken up by the controls and machinery. The driver's seat was located to the left of the VT, while the commander's seat was located in the center and a bit higher up. To the right was the mechanical autoloader that fed the cannon. All in all, it seemed to be a regular VT crewspace for 2.

"Hm, interesting. Doesn't seem too different from the tractor." Tarin muses as she settles in the driver's seat, looking at all of the levers and knobs.

"Not surprising. The idea was to make VTs easy to pilot." You explain. "So anybody with experience with heavy machinery can easily transition."

"I see." Tarin nods as she grasps the levers. "Nothing's going to happen if I-"

"Nah, the VT is pretty much a useless hunk of metal if you don't start the engine." You point to the ignition crank. "But I'd rather you don't touch anything."

"Right." Tarin nods.

Still, your eyes wander to the ignition crank as you settle in the commander's seat. It felt... really nice. It felt... powerful.

Wait, so VTs are usually made for 2 crew members like a tankette.

That means the driver's completely dedicated to driving while the Commander is assumed to be the Radio Operator, the and the Gunner (hopefully they have an autoloading mechanism, or lower calibre guns).

"All right, Tarin, let's get going." You say as you clamber back out of the hatch. Though it was tempting to take it out for a joyride, that was practically career suicide.

"Right." Tarin nods, making sure the polish off the gauges before following you out.

---

"Well well well, maggots." The Drill Instructor grunts as he paces back and forth in front of the now much smaller group of recruits. "You've all made to the final stage of training, meaning you're that much closer to evolving from maggots and becoming proper bloody tankers!"

You can't help but feel a swelling pride for having made it this far. VT training was much harsher than you thought, but you managed to pull through, along with Tarin. The two of you ended being a rather effective crew. Tarin seemed to have a very good eye for judging terrain, knowing where a VT could step and where it couldn't. You were a decent enough commander. While you weren't at the top of the class in terms of scores, you were still in a solid spot in the rankings.

"For your final assignment, you will be performing in a full scale war game!" The Drill Instructor barks. "You will be divided into two teams and given objectives to fulfill! Your PERFORMANCE will be judged, not your results, so the losing team can still pass training. However, the winning teams will place higher in the class ranking, and will therefore get first pick on their deployments!"

There's a low mumble among the recruits. Posts to the most celebrated and elite units were few and far between, and HIGHLY competitive.

(cont)
>>
>>39720359
That's actually why he hardly runs it anymore. He feels there's too much (character-wise and in terms of powerbloat) and there's little left to do.
>>
>>39720388
"Shiny!" The Drill Instructor stops in front of you. "Shiny" was the nickname he had give you after he saw just how damn shiny the VTs he forced you to clean on the first day of training were. Afterwards he seemed to have taken a liking to you, or at least some kind of respect. He seemed to have this very weird way of showing this appreciation, often putting you on the spot in front of your peers. "I'll let you suggest what kind of mission we'll be simulating!"

Yep. Putting on the spot like always. You could feel the eyes of the other recruits boring into the back of your head.

"How about something more akin to real world ops, like Defend/Assault?" You suggest.

"Good choice, Shiny!" The Drill Instructor nods. "All right, then I'll let you pick what side to take!"

You pause to consider this. While you have no doubts that playing Defender would be much easier and would give you a greater chance of "winning", going Attacker would be a better opportunity to demonstrate your VT command skills. However, in more physical terms, the Defending team was often made slightly smaller than the Attacking team to make up for their defense advantage.

"Attacker, of course, sir." You grin.

"Understood." The Drill Instructor nods and points to five more crew pairs. "You five will be attackers. The rest will be on defense. Now report to your VTs!"

You and the rest of the recruits hustle to the VT hangar, where all of the VTs were stored. Obviously, these were all training variants that stayed on the base. None of you could call any of these VTs your own. However, that didn't stop you and Tarin "choosing" one as your preferred VT, Number 7.

You both drop down into the crewspace, with Tarin settling into the driver's seat and you in the commander's. You put your hand on the ignition crank and spin it until the VT's diesel engine roars to life. The noise is repeated all throughout the hangar as the other VTs begin to start up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxX6phlbds8

"All right, maggots! Attackers report to Rally point Alpha and Defenders report to Rally Point Bravo!" The Drill Instructor barks. "You will be given further instructions then!"

(cont)
>>
>>39721603
Ten VTs slowly lumber out of the hangar. By this point, you all have a good idea on how to drive them, so you don't trip or bump into each other this time. Jeez, you still remember that first launch. Utter. Disaster. Finally, you and your fellow attackers gather at the Rally Point, where you see a Command VT with its signature expanded cab and large radio antennae sticking out of the top.

"Attack group, your objective is to assault the Crag." The Drill Instructor's voice buzzes through the radio. "Victory conditions are if you are able to have at least one VT enter the objective and hold it for five minutes, or destroying all defenders. Actual attack strategy will be left to your discretion.

"Aw damn, the Crag." You sigh. The Crag was the training course's toughest obstacle. Not only was it high ground, but it had some of the most challenging terrain, being extremely rocky and uneven. Even the most experienced VT crew would have trouble walking through.

"It's not going to be easy getting up there, and the Defenders are going to have a huge advantage." Tarin points out. "Any ideas?"

We pause to think. You could concentrate the other VTs together and attack as one large group, just plan steamrolling through the defense. On the other hand, you could split up into multiple groups, forcing the defenders to spread out and expose themselves.

"All right, guys." You speak up to the other VTs. "We're going to split up in three pairs and hit them from three sides. Try to get them to stretch their lines."

"Roger that." Four of the VTs split off into two pairs and fan out so that they can flank the opposite sides of the Crag. That just leaves you with Number 9, with the Bertman Twins. They were one of the higher performing crews, though they were a bit... odd to say the very least.

"Yo, Powers. Looks like we're working together again." The commander, Axel says happily.

"Looks like it." You laugh. "How's Alfie doing?"

"I-I'm fine." Axel's incredibly shy and reclusive twin sister stutters quietly over the radio.

"Come on, Axel, let's kick the door down." You grin.

"All right, following your lead, then." Axel laughs.

"Tarin, forward." You instruct.

"Moving forward." Tarin confirms.

Both VTs lumber forward towards the Crag. You keep a close and wary eye for any hidden VTs. One of the strengths of VTs and rough terrain was the fact that VTs could very effectively use the terrain to cover themselves.

You don't spot anything out of the ordinary, and allow Tarin to keep walking the VT forward towards the Crag. However, you hear a dull whistle shortly before a clump of trees explodes.

"Looks like enemy fire." Tarin points out.

"Yeah, no kidding!" You grunt as you peer through your periscope, trying to find the source of the attack. You scan the Crag and see a pair of dug in VTs popping up from cover and lobbing 75mm shells at you before ducking back down behind a ridge. Typical hit and run shelling tactics.

"Do we keep moving or do we stop and engage?" Tarin asks, her hand hovering over the brake lever as another shell falls about thirty meters away. They still hadn't completely zeroed in on the distance, at least.

"Keep pushing forward, Tarin. We're still at max range. Even if they hit the shots won't penetrate."

"Roger." Tarin takes her hand off the brake lever and instead opens up the throttle, turning the VT's slow advance into something of a quick gallop. Dummy shells still fall around you, blasting clouds of dirt and dust into the air. Your VT shudders as they score a lucky hit on you, but the trainer VT's built in hit detector doesn't register as a kill. You take a quick glance to Axel's VT, which keep space with yours. You see two shells bounce off the front armor, hardly even slowing the vehicle at all.

"Heh, they're just wasting ammo at this point." Axel laughs.

"Don't get cocky. The closer we get the more effective their shots get." You warn.

At this point, you both reach the base of the Crag, and already, the ground is getting more rocky and uneven, forcing Tarin to slow down so she can more carefully place the VT's feet. It wouldn't do you any good stepping on some loose gravel and falling over.

"I see those bastards!" Axel yells. "Directly ahead! Let's take them out!"

Indeed, the two defending VTs seem to have given up doing the hit and run attacks and just hold entrenched positions, firing directly down on you. Now you were a bit more concerned, since you should be within their cannons' effective range.

"Orders?" Tarin asks.

You quickly adjust your aim to account for your movement and distance. Satisfied, you pull the trigger, and the entire VT shakes as the cannon fires. The spent shell is automatically ejected and a new one is loaded in by the autoloader. However, observing through your periscope, you see that a second shot is unnecessary. One of the enemy VTs moves up to try and get a beter firing position right as your shell slams directly into it. Even if your shot didn't penetrate, it was still carrying enough force that it caused the VT to lose its footing and topple backwards

Right into its partner.

Like dominos, both VTs lose balance and fall to the ground, effectively becoming useless.

"Damn, good shot!" Axel whoops. "We got this in the bag!"

With the two guards disabled, there's nothing to stop you from scaling the rest of the way up to the capture zone, where you don't meet any further resistance.

"Well, that was easy." Tarin says, sounding a bit disappointed.

"Well, it's not like this was the real thing." You chuckle as you pat Tarin's head from behind. "And I get the feeling we're not always going to get a lucky shot like that."

"True."

"All right, all VTs stand down." The Drill Instructor's voice buzzes through the radio. "Attackers have seized the objective. Good job, maggots, you're all proper bloody tankers, now!"

And the entire radio net is flooded with cheers and whoops.

"Yeah! We did it, Tarin!" You laugh as you high five her. "We're honest to god vertical tankers!"

"I'm... actually pretty excited." Tarin's normally stoic expression briefly melts away into a grin.

Somehow, just seeing that grin made you feel better than winning a thousand simulated victories.
