>Even the lowest quality of pig iron can be forged into steel.

When you started drawing up this whole plan, you only had a good idea and a set amount of resources in mind. Five-and-a-half good wanzers, six able pilots, and an open area in front of a giant warehouse to practice with. You also had enough junk to set up a rudimentary training system involving cover, obstruction, and other minor traps. But as you went on in drafting a plan, more and more creative ideas crept into your mind.

Setting the team up for difficult terrain. Setting them up against multiple opponents on their own. Setting them up with limited weaponry. The possibilities on training the squad were limitless, so long as you had the imagination for it. Reaching back, you tie your red hair back into a low foxtail to get it out of your face. Each member of the Red Pack had their strengths and weaknesses, so training had to focus on improving their strengths, eliminating their weaknesses, or a mixture of both.

Your name is Flare Cuvic, mechanic of Bullseye Squad and squad leader of the Red Pack. Ever since you've gotten on the dirtball known as the planet Tyhra, you've been in one battle after another, forced to fight for your freedom. You've forged alliances with willing and unwilling participants alike, and you're going to win this tournament and gain your freedom. Well, that, or bust out of this shithole and nuke the whole planet from high orbit.

Yeah, that latter one seems more appealing, now that you think about it.

On the holoboard, you've got a few group training exercises that you could work on. The most appealing, and the one that you know the best, would be synchronization training. You set up a training dummy, set up some music, and bark orders to the beat. The entire team follows those orders as fast as they can, learning to react to your command and work together so that they don't get in each other's way.

The next idea you've got is intra-team scrimmaging. You can split the team up into three-on-three or two-on-two-on-two, but the main idea is to have them start working with each other and getting a feel for listening to their squadmates' calls. It would require picking a temporary leader for each group, but that won't be too hard.

The last idea is the one your CO prided himself on. TITAN Training involved him getting in a mech and challenging some squads in the IVC to a fight. It worked on the rookies, but he had a bit of trouble against the more experienced crew. Just a little bit, though. The point of the exercise was to learn co-operation through sink-or-swim tactics by using live rounds. It's the most dangerous, but you're sure that this will get results quickly.

It was still early in the morning, so if you started now, you could get a full session of exercise in before people got tired or hungry for lunch. The only problem was that you could only feasibly do one, if you wanted to maximize training output. Hmm...

>Options?
>Synchronization Training? The squad might get better at following your orders.
>Intra-Team Scrimmage? The squad might get better at working in pairs / without your orders.

With what you know about the team, you're sure that the best idea is to just pit them against the one person that they fear (maybe) - you. The whole team - hell, the whole planet has seen exactly what you can do. It's no stretch of the imagination to think that you could kick all of their asses easily, especially in the new wanzers. You save the other two plans in text documents for later, just in case.

You gather up the team with a quick holler. "Red Pack, form up! I've got today's training readied up for you guys!" The group falls in at the sound of your voice, filing into the commons room and lining up at the holoboard. Everyone seemed to be in good spirits, judging from their stern expression. Hell, even Roy was trying to look dignified.

"Alright, listen up. Today, I'm going to do a little something known as TITAN Training. The gist of it is to get the five of you to try and kick my ass before I fuck you all up on my own. You sons of bitches better get your shit together, because I'm not going to be pulling any punches. Speaking of which, we're going to be using LIVE ROUNDS. That's right - real rounds. Don't pretend to fire on your own teammate or some dumb shit like that. The goal is to..."

"...get the weapons out of your enemy's hands. To simulate real combat, once you've got your weapon out of your hand, you're dead as shit. Trust me, you don't want to be dead, once the exercise is over. I'm going to be doing punishment shit for the people who fuck up. The people who do good...fuck, I dunno, I'll think of something. Saddle up, people - we got ten minutes until training." You give the team a lazy version of Bullseye Squad's salute, which is to ball up your fist and raise it close to your heart.

Nahn, Roy, and Deks start to group up together, chatting and whispering something you can't quite make out. Sofia and Gaius also leave together, with the latter starting to talk tactics to the former. Both of the blue-skinned aliens didn't seem to be particularly afraid or nervous, but the three others spoke in hushed, fearful tones. They'll be the weak pray to get first, then.

All that left was Myl, who was standing there with her hands behind her back. "Sparky, ah'm all for sittin' around, but ah think it's time ya put me t'work, fer once. I mean, ah like doin' mah own thing, sure, but it just don't feel right t' be a lone wolf when yer all doin' yer thing. Also, ah wanted t' talk to ya about last night in a more personal way." The spunky mechanic said, staring right into your shades.

She signals you to follow her to the eating table, where she sits down at one side of the table. You are directed to sit down on the other side, facing her directly. "Awright. Now, ah'd be out of a job if all I could do is tune yer wanzers up. I'm sure y'all know by now, but ah got a few feelers out there fer contacts, and ah got info bleedin' outta mah ears, if'n yer interested. I could always go on collectin' info for ya, if that's yer fancy."

"If that ain't yer cuppa tea, I also into contact with them upper-class Patrician folk in the High City. Th' whole pack's strapped fer cash when we try t'get parts, so if ya don't wanna do jobs, we could start gettin' ourselves a sponsor or two. Always a good idea t' get our hands in ta politics, Red."

"Last but def'nitly not least, ah'm a right good hand at buildin' new areas o' the warehouse for ya. If ya want some new places fer me t'set up, just lemme know. Oh, one more thing - these're just some ideas. If'n ya want me ta do other tasks, just ask, cap'n. Ah got lotsa talents under mah belt. Also, if ya give me orders, it'll probably take me a day ta get it done. Y'all are gonna have ta be patient."

In your head, you sum up the basics of what she said. Basically, Myl wants to be more useful to the team, and she's willing to do it by either getting information for you about whatever you want, trying to drum up money from the upper class assholes, or building new areas for the Warehouse. You nod to her, sitting up in your chair.

She smiles, leans forward, and pulls out a small datapad from her back pocket. "So. Now that y'know what ah can do, I wanna know what ya want ME t'do. Just lemme know what ah gotta do fer Red Pack, cap'n, and I'll write it down in this here handy-dandy-pad."

The most pertinent thing that comes to mind would be to get information on the next match. "Myl, I'm going to need information about our next match. I'm going to need dirt on the mudfuckers that we're going to fight, how we're going to do it, and how we can kick their asses easier. Weaknesses, flaws, exploits...anything that'll give us an edge." You say.

Your blonde mechanic tips her hat and grins. "Ah thought you'd ask fer that. They sent me th' info last night. Yer next match is gonna be a three way against some tougher folks. We lucked out - there ain't no team limit on this'un, but th' other two teams got ten people, each. It's gonna be out in th' Ruined City again, so it'll be urban combat. Ah'll get ya some more info about th' other two teams when ya got time, Slick." Damn, Myl works fast. You move to get up -

"Hold on, there. Ah ain't done with yer sorry hide just yet, cap'n. Look, I'll be honest - we're still right fearful o' yer temper, here. Th' team's half-spooked an' terrified of ya. I mean, I know this ain't some sort o' relaxin' vacation or nothin', but...y'know." says Myl, nervously adjusting her clothes. "Ah'm not itchin' fer a fight or nothin' with ya, but I gotta know. Do ya need ta talk about things with me? Might get th' chip off yer shoulder." Is she saying you've got anger issues?

As much as you dislike the notion of someone saying you're a short fuse, it's not as if you've given them any proof as to the contrary. You've done nothing but yell at them, even if it's for a good reason. Whether or not you believe her, Myl's heart is in the right place. Hopefully. For now, you look at her and reply, "Look, I'm - I just - Myl, that's a nice offer and all, but now isn't the time. Maybe later, alright? I'll explain shit like that when I'm done kicking everyone's asses."

Myl wasn't pleased to hear that, but she sighed and got out of her chair. "If ya say so, Hotshot. Ah won't make ya promise nothin', but I want ya t' really THINK about it. Th' whole Pack's concerned for ya, girl. Even the bluebell's up in arms fer calmin' yer shit down, after last night. If ya won't talk t'me, talk t' someone. Anyone. Th' bugger's good at talkin'."

The matter was tabled, for the moment, as far as either of you were concerned. Myl initiated her own daily project, while you headed out toward the wanzer hangar.

1/?
>>
>>39618553
Upon entering the hangar, you come across an interesting sight. Your squad was huddled together in a tight circle, speaking in hushed tones. No one seemed to take leadership, at the moment, though you noted Gaius' foot tapping and finger-drumming on his own thigh. He wanted to take control of the team, it looked like. Maybe you should listen in and see just what they're planning...

Then again, their lack of attention to their own wanzers could be their downfall. With the group being so tight-knit as they were, it would be an easy fix to just...oh, say, snip a few wires here, or change a few control schemes there. It's dirty and underhanded, but it's not as if it isn't justified, right? Besides, you're not as good as the CO was. You might not be able to take on five people on your own.

It might just be a better idea to get to work on your own wanzer, though. While Myl was nice enough to do a quick patch job on both Nahn's and your own wanzers, that didn't imply that she put the proper calibrations on them. And there's the whole business with the AI. You're still not sure if you just wanna run blind, or if you want that annoying piece of shit to help you out...

As strategically sound as it would be to ruin your own team's wanzers, you decide against sabotage. In a live-fire training exercise, anything could happen; it's better to not add to the chaos and accidentally cause the death of a squadmate. No, you should just work on tuning up your own bucket, instead. Grabbing some spare tools, you head over to your wanzer and pop open the cockpit.

Your first order of business is to either remove or reboot that shitty AI. Even if you can't hear it, you definitely don't want to think about all that noise it was making with its grating voice. You climb aboard and bend down over the dashboard, unscrewing the undercarriage. To your annoyance, the black box that houses the AI is jostled up underneath a whole mess of wires. If you so much as unplug it the wrong way, you'll probably fuck up the system by your own hands. With an irritated sigh, you screw the underpanel back on. If that won't work, maybe the control console might have something?

You pull your head back up above the dashboard and look at the controls. Again, nothing popped up. The only thing that you could really use from the console was the mute button, and that was only a temporary solution to what was clearly a permanent problem. Well, it's better than nothing.

1/?
>>
>>39619242
You start up your wanzer, jamming your thumb against the mute button to silence the AI before it could even speak. At this point, the rest of the squad had finished up their little group meeting and were now making adjustments to their own wanzers. Now would probably be a good time to make some final adjustments of your own...

>>39619296
You didn't really have the time to optimize the stock software, now that you think about it. Most of this stuff could really use a bit of that Midas touch. You open up the software interface on the front window screen, pulling up a command prompt on the minimap in the center of the dashboard. From what you can see, most of the software code is pretty inefficient, with lines just slapped on haphazardly to save on time and money. You crunch down about half of that coding into a more efficient system before closing that down. If you had more time, you'd start doing more with it, but it'll do, for now.

The other problem seems to be in energy output. Right now, the main battery seems to be overtaxed, while the backup battery is just laying dormant. With the amount of pressure you put on the wanzer, you're surprised that the whole thing didn't blow up in flames in the middle of the match! You crank out the backup battery to power some of the sub-optimal processes, such as the coolant system and shock absorbing systems. It's not as pretty as you'd like it to be, and the energy output hasn't changed quite as much as you'd like, but at least there's a noticeable change.

1/?
>>
>>39619936
You close out the command menu and the software interface at the same time, clearing out your front window. Heading out toward the front of the warehouse, you wave the team forward. You'd use the comm unit to talk to them, but it's probably better if you just keep it quiet. They're probably switching to a different frequency, anyhow.

Once the team was assembled outside, you take a few paces back and examine the surroundings. It was the usual junkheap that you were coming to expect; there was a big, open compound that you and the team were standing in, surrounded by heaps of junk all around. It wouldn't exactly be good for cover, but you could definitely dance around the team if you needed to. As for your opponents...

Everyone was in their new suits, sticking to the same types of wanzer as before. Roy was in a speed type with a scattergun, Nahn was still decked as a heavy gunner, Sofia was in a sleek sniper wanzer, and Deks was in a shield unit that didn't look like absolute garbage. The only new opponent was Gaius, who was currently suited up in Deks' old wanzer. He could only move one arm, but the muscular man seemed determined to prove his mettle.

Three. You're already closing up your cockpit.

Two. You're using your wanzer to count down, now, holding out your wanzer's left hand.

One. The revolver opens out from your wanzer's hidden compartment, shooting into the palm of your right hand.

Go! Immediately, you turn toward Roy, who was stationed just behind Gaius and Deks. Both tried to draw up their arm-shields, but your quickdraw is much faster due to your tune-ups. Using the lowered gap that was Gaius' unmoving right arm, you pull the trigger and aim at the butt of Roy's scattergun! Your bullet strikes his weapon clean, propelling it right out of his hands and into the scrap heap behind him. One down!

Nahn and Sofia drew their fire against you almost immediately after that. While the human soldier-girl wasn't much of a problem, due to her unwieldy gun, Sofia's aim was almost worrisome. Almost. Out of the three shots that came from her AP Sniper, you're sure that two of them almost grazed your right arm. You dive behind cover, reloading your single bullet...

1/?
>>
>>39620519
The enemy was already on the move. Your on-board sensors were picking up four sets of movement; one lighter unit was sticking behind two heavier ones, while the last unit was trying to get to higher ground. Was she climbing up the scrap heaps to get to the top of the warehouse? Clever girl.

Your current cover wouldn't last you forever. Already, it was getting torn apart by the enemy's heavy gun, since it was only made of rust and scrap...

She wasn't using the side that you couldn't see, since it was too far away, and her rifle was strapped to her back. Ripe for the pickings. As for the closer concerns, the two defense-type wanzers were too busy giving Nahn reliable cover to really look out for the blueberry. They were probably expecting you to get overwhelmed by that, or something along those lines.

Big mistake.

You spin out of cover, holding your revolver with both hands and aiming right for Sofia's rifle. You can't spend too much time shooting, but you can only hope that your aim is good enough to hit such a small target. Nahn's starting to turn toward you - you're out of time! Pulling the trigger, you dive back into the protection the outer ring of junk before looking at your handiwork.

Success! When you looked toward Sofia, there was a distinct lack of a sniper rifle on her back. She was climbing down from the warehouse's wall, now, and would now be forced to search for her gun. Even if this was a duel to the death, that would have been a crack shot. Sadly, you don't have time to appreciate your handiwork. The remaining three soldiers were getting too close for comfort.

You try to use the same trick as before and look at the enemy using reflections, but Nahn's errant gunfire takes out your shimmering surface. From the two shadows coming in from your left and your right, you can tell that Deks and Gaius are coming in from both sides, with Nahn rounding out the trio in the middle. That doesn't look good...

This is really starting to get you down. Even the competent sniper was easy to take out! If they had just put more pressure on you from the start, this kind of thing wouldn't happen, but the team just doesn't seem to be able to move quickly enough. If there was just some way to get them to move faster, they would probably do a lot better. Sure, it's the failure of the equipment as much as it is the user, and it has been only a few days, but - no, stop it. Now isn't the time for errant thoughts.

You dive into the very back of the trash pile before starting to make your way around the team. There were a few times where you were sure they would catch you and start to reposition, but the enemy team just can't seem to find you, anymore. You topple over a few of the trash piles behind you while moving forward, making sure to move two steps ahead of their FOVs. You stop toppling trash, then move around close to where Roy and Sofia were. They may have been dead, but just in case they tried to alert the enemy, you kept hiding in the refuse all the same.

You were in luck. There was no sign of them spotting you. Nahn stopped firing for just a moment to reload, while Deks and Gaius held up their walls at the direction where they thought you might be hiding. Since you had a clear line of fire at your heavy gunner's weapon, it was clearly not the right direction.

...maybe you should go easy on her. Hell, maybe you should just go easy on all of them.

Well, time to get this over with. You whip your revolver around one finger with a flourish, holding your arm out to aim at Nahn's gun -

Suddenly, Gaius turns right toward you. He dives between you and Nahn, blocking the bullet with his arm shields before it could reach her! Nahn reloads machine gun, adjusting the bullet feed and spinning the barrel a bit before aiming it right toward you. Shit, shit, shit! You dive back into the cover of the junk heaps just in time, dodging a rain of bullets through dwindling scrap.

You couldn't relax here. Already, Deks and Gaius were closing in on your position. Had they lulled you into a sense of complacency with the first two people? Your sensors were indicating that they were moving a little faster now. Either they figured out how to get the lead out of their asses or they were trying to play possum to get you to lower your guard. Well, shows you right for underestimating your team.

They've got you pinned down in the trash heaps. Gaius and Deks stationed their huge wanzers at the very edge of the junk ring, taking out heap after heap to start digging toward you. Nahn was holding her fire, but you were sure that she kept her barrels primed and ready for when you eventually get forced to dive out. If you're going to do something, you better start thinking of something to do right now!

You couldn't get caught in a death trap like that. You had to get out. They would probably expect you to try and escape from Deks' side, since he was currently the weakest link, but going out from Gaius' side would only be suicide. Pushing your wanzer forward, you leap out of cover and jump above the bugger's shields. Nahn was on you in an instant, raining hot death in your direction and clipping your arms. A few of the bullets struck the servos in your right arm, and you hurried to defend your weapon. In your haste, you shielded your revolver and right hand with your left.

Gaius came in from the side, rushing up to grab at your feet. He was able to get a firm hold and swing you down to the ground, forcing your wanzer to land face-first. He wasn't done with you yet, though; the one-armed pilot used the break in your momentum to swing you out toward the center of the open field. You force your mech to land in a curled up fetal position, instincts kicking in to minimize the damage to just the arms and legs, at least.

You break out of your fetal position in a roll and scramble to get back up. Nahn, Deks, and Gaius close in on you, surrounding you from three sides. There's very little room to escape, if at all - fuck, this really might be the end!

The CO kept on bragging about situations like this. These were the times that made men into soldiers, and soldiers into commanders. Well, you might not be a man, but you sure as hell are a soldier. Flicking your revolver out, you plant two quick shots right into Deks' left pile bunker before sliding down underneath him! The bullets pushed Deks backward, staggering him and giving an ample window with which to sweep him under. Your forward window starts flashing various warnings in your face concerning leg damage, but you ignore them, for now. Your unnamed wanzer can take the heat.

Neither Nahn nor Gaius could quite catch up to the speed of your wanzer's movements. Nahn just didn't have the reflexes, and Gaius was in too slow of a mech. You roll up to a standing position before diving right back into the junk ring, giving both sides a chance to regroup and armor up. While they shifted their formation, you slotted in fresh bullets to your revolver. Man, this thing was really pulling it's weight.

In any case, Deks wasn't out just yet. The defense-types technically had two weapons, since they had pile bunkers for each arm. If you wanted to take them all out, you were going to have to take out both of those weapons. The heavy gunner was once again stationed behind the two walls, using their connected shoulders as a sort of turret nest for her machine gun. She was now firing blindly in your general direction... wait, maybe you could use that to your advantage.

1/?
>>
>>39622733
There was only so much ammunition on her. You still had quite a few rounds stored on you, since they're easy to hide on a light speed-type like your wanzer and you don't exactly waste shots. Nahn, in the meantime, can only carry so many cartridges before she risks the weight limit. She's had to reload...what, twice, now? There might be something there...

Nahn wouldn't be running low any time soon. If you wanted to end this exercise, you better end it now. You already injured Deks, so going for him was the clear choice. You run out and aim for his remaining arm -

- damn it! The damaged servo kicked in then and there, skewing your aim just slightly to the right. This, coupled by Deks' shielding of his right pile bunker, meant that you hit his already-damaged left arm. That wouldn't count as a kill, even if you did try to hornswaggle them on the rules! Now stuck out in the open, you scramble to the far side of the field.

They're getting wise, now. Nahn is saving up her ammo for when you stop moving, and she's starting to miss you by less and less of a margin. Gaius is keeping his shields up to face you more often, and he's keeping in time to your movements. Deks was the one lagging behind, and even he was keeping his wanzer's posture upright and his shields in a defending position. They had also thinned out the junk heaps a considerable degree, giving you much less cover to hide in. If you were going to run, you were going to have to run under fire.

1/?
>>

This battle was starting to take a toll on you, both physically and mentally. You weren't expecting this at all, from these three. Hell, you weren't expecting this from anyone in your squad! In a way, you're kind of proud that they're subverting your expectations. Then again, you're not exactly happy that you're the one being subverted. Well, no time to regret it now. You side step to the chariot's flank, trying to outmaneuver them before they can outmaneuver you. If you could just take out Nahn, you could blow these sons of bitches wide open!

Nahn and Gaius were caught unawares. They must have been suffering from the same battle fatigue as you were, by now. Deks, however, was right on you in an instant. He broke away from the formation, lurching forward in his wanzer with his one good pile bunker facing forward. You try to stay out of his reach, but warnings start to flash in your viewscreen. He's got you cornered against the warehouse's wall!

Deks wasn't good with attacking things, but with you almost pinned down, he didn't have to be. The bugger's wanzer lifted his right arm up, pointing the working pile bunker right at your shoulder. With a quick jab, the pistons within the bunker shot forward, putting enough pressure on your wanzer's left shoulder to crush diamonds into a thin powder. The left arm is torn from its socket, and you almost reel back in pain. Holy - "-fucking SHIT!"

I don't like heavy metal, but I think it's thematically approrpiate.

Everything seems to just slow down to a crawl. As if in a dream, your hands move autonomously from your body. Raising your right hand and angling it at Deks' exposed weapon, you thrust your wanzer forward and plant three shots right into his pile bunker. The sudden force of your movement pushes him down to the ground once more, giving you ample time to avoid Nahn's return fire. Your body feels light. Your limbs feel weightless. Movement is simple for you.

It's almost fun, in a way, working under pressure. Without your left arm weighing you down, your movements are much faster. The remaining two enemies just can't keep up with you, with Nahn not even trying to follow your blazing trail. Gaius keeps trying to approach, but every time he starts to take a step forward, you blaze closer to him. When he tries to grab at you, you almost flash right back, not giving him any time to maneuver around you.

Just to be sure, you take a very quick peek down at your left side. Yeah, your arm's still there. Phew.

There were only two left. Gaius still had his one functioning arm, and Nahn was still fully operational, but Deks had been the third leg holding their chariot together. Without him, they're forced into an awkward two-man turtle, with no proper way to support Nahn's gun.

>Options?
>Blast Nahn's gun out from where you're standing. Gaius can't block it properly anymore without covering her line of fire. (Please roll 2d100 for attacking and evasion.)
>Take out Gaius by shooting his one good arm, then flanking him and shooting his other arm out. Without him, Nahn's all but dead. (Please roll 2d100 for attacking and evasion.)

No matter how much you dodged, there was no way that you could end this fight passively. You had to start being aggressive. Spinning the chamber of your revolver open, you empty out the spent bullets and load in a fresh clip. This would be the last one that you'll get, tonight - if you went any longer than this, the damage you'd receive would force the match to a draw. After a one-handed reload on your knee, you begin to run forward.

Gaius seemed to have the same idea as you did. He wanted to end this match, as well. Thinking quickly, you try to side-step him by his immobile arm - no! It shot out as fast as lightning, grabbing your wanzer by the right wrist. Damn it all, you should have expected this; just because he only had one arm doesn't mean he wouldn't use the useless right arm! He began to apply pressure, and you began to kick your feet out toward him. If you could just get out of his grip...

As if answering your call, a short burst of bullets came from Nahn's direction. You thought for sure that they would come to hit your gun, but, either by extreme miscalculation or by sheer bad luck, she was able to make three bullets strike right at the center of Gaius' pile bunker! Her rounds pierced the shitty wanzer's F-Class plating, destroying its inner workings and releasing your arm. This gives you the chance to pull away from Gaius and grip your gun properly. Luckily, your wrist was still intact, even if it was showing signs of damage.

>>
>>39623697
Gaius and Nahn seemed to just stare at each other for a moment. Both wanzers weren't moving. Hell, you'd be stunned to silence, if that shit happened in your old squad. It's no large jump of the imagination to think that they were yelling at each other. Well, under the tension of battle, people either get tough or get cracked. Nahn probably cracked.

All the better for you.

>Options?
>Use this chance to take both of them out with a full sweep! (Please roll 2d100 for double attacking. This will leave you exposed.)

Warning lights were starting to flood your viewscreen. Your wanzer was hurting, and hurting bad. The right arm had destroyed servos, torn wiring, and was barely even working; the left leg unit only had a single suspension unit left, and it was starting to buckle under the pressure you kept putting on it; even the AI was starting to overheat from all this. You're lucky to still be standing.

Not one to squander chances, you take aim right at Nahn, making a show of flourishing your single arm and aiming straight for her gun. Gaius dives once more, holding his left wanzer arm up to at least try and block your attack. He held it in such a way that he might as well have been hitting the broad side of a barn, if you wanted to hit his pile bunker.

With a single shot, you took out Gaius' remaining weapon. All that was left was Nahn. To her credit, she was standing her ground in front of you, holding her gun up. Then again, the panic in her mind was clear. Even when you were just walking to the right to make it easier on your left leg, she wasn't able to hit you once. The girl was panicking so hard that she was still trying to fire even when her ammo belt had run dry, and there were no more bullets coming at you.

>Options?
>Stand still. Take aim. Fire. (Please roll 1d100+10 to attack. Aiming will improve your chances, but this will leave you vulnerable.)

>>
>>39623981
Honestly, you just wanted this to end. While they got some good hits on you, it was a five-on-one match with relatively even equipment. All they had to do was rush you before you could rush them. You didn't know whether to feel disappointed or mad. Right now, with Nahn almost cowering at your approach, it was a mixture of both. Best not to draw it out, at least.

You take a few steps to the left before realizing that there were no more bullets to fire at you. Nahn knew she was dead, either by you shooting at her while she was reloading or by you shooting at her while she was trying to shoot at you. As valiant as she was in trying to hold her ground, there was no salvaging this. You had won, completely and utterly. All she was waiting for was for you to pull the trigger.

Raising up your revolver, you take aim for the wanzer gauntlet with a loose hold on the machine gun.

Bang.

>>
>>39626448
Careful, anon - I can't detect shit like that. I'm pretty bad with Internet speech.

The AIs in your system are rudimentary at best. They're only artificial intelligence in the sense that they do the autonomous tasks, not because they can actually think and speak.

If you want real AIs, you're gonna have to spend the dosh, do some work, or make them on your own through various means.
>>
>>39626501
that just made me think of AIs as sort of backup currency, like keeping some gold in your shoe. Software has next to no weight and tons of value, after all.

>>
>>39626602
>>39626602
.....I know it sounds like it, but I honestly didn't mean anything magical realm-y. Just that since AIs are expensive, useful for a variety of application, AND are resistant to depreciation(since experience gives them an edge against newer AIs), they would be better than a gold standard.

like I said, not for the government or the banks to rely on(although they would have EMP shielding and scifi versions of such), but for the individuals, people who have a lot of money but can't protect it well or do not have access to a bank.

Like mercenaries. Not that I expect Flare to have one, what with her stance on AIs.

Besides, it's not like EMPs happen on a daily basis, right? Not even scifi airport security would waste that much time and money.

I'm not asking for a straight up upgrade or some of thosexshitty proposals.
I just want people to realize that what we need to do is at least train hard enough so that at least we can get a single modifier on anything.
sure. Even a measly +1 to all rolls. I can roll with it, it prevents shooting your friendly's arm off if you fuck up somehow while shooting a borad side of the barn. To clarify, I 'm not asking YOU, a QM as a player, to give a straight up buff just because I 'think' we need it. But for future planning, I wish we could train up to have even a single 1 point modifier, because for at least one roll out of a 100 could cost us an arm. That costs us a combat. that cost us a life. Judging bot how damaging a crit roll is, and the amount of shit our squad has come across with, I doubt they're still bumbling around their controls in such a pressureing shithole they're currently thrown in(like some real world examples of a recruit pulling off 11 kill in a trench as suddenly his officer is dead and enemy soldiers charging up to your position. With one of those kills done in melee.
>>
>>39627000
I'm trying to view this from all angles, trips. From an in-game standpoint, they should at least be able to hold their ground against one person. It shouldn't be like in animoos, where the main character can just kick everyone's ass with one shot.

Gameplay-wise, their rolls aren't just up to chance. I'd put actual values to how much I bump their rolls up, but when the allies are facing against Flare, those stats face up against Flare's own buffed-up stats. It's kinda skewed in Flare's favor, half the time, which is why this match was kinda deadly for them.

Wow, I just realized I didn't address what you said. Let me try again. You guys are training for the express purpose of trying to get upgrades. Even I can see that a system of fighting based almost entirely on dice rolls is going to make competent soldiers look like asstits. See : Roy.

>You guys are training for the express purpose of trying to get upgrades.
The thing is that getting even a single point of a modifier can prevent fuck ups.
A 2 is not as much of a clusterfuck as a Critfail 1, and it can be burned off as an awsome success of a heat charge instead of a medicore success. If the sistem haf a crit range of 3, then getting a +3 mod is going to prevent a critfail.
there was a thread I read back in a while, about rolls not being objectively bad or good, but like this
Bad/mistake, but-Yes/success, and-Good/success-but, great/success-and.
the point was to make a fail not just a straight up disadvantage, but to make more options.
I kinda remember the example. You pick a door.
you fail to open the lock, but you notice footsteps down the hall-you pick the lock and the click alerts the guard on the other side-you open the lock, but the guard on the end of the hall notice you-you open the lock of a ghost, and you hear footsteps going away from you on the other side of the door
things like this.

Now I need to reread the top half of your response to fully understand it.
>>
>>39627156
I see what you're saying, anon, don't worry. And I share the sentiment. But it's only been four days. Training them is going to take at least two days; even the best of soldiers can't just learn something without a day's worth of effort.

Sorry, what I meant to say was 'I don't have the stats fully drummed up yet. I'm winging it like a bitch right now when I should be writing down exactly what each person can do, even though Flare wouldn't exactly know that kind of statwork off the top of her head'.

Flare is definitely stronger than her team-mates, with the possible exception of Gaius. Sofia, while stronger at aiming and sniping, is not as good in every other aspect.
