Current Recap:

Your name is Sierra Beckhoff. You are the coolest person you know, and with one notable exception, you are probably the most badass. Basically you’re the kind of person who takes care of business and gets the job done.

After an extended adventure on another plane of existence, and a brief interlude in Canada, you are finally back in the Bay Area. You’re tired, you’re sore, and you’re pretty much ready to go home.

--

You whip out your phone and start walking back toward where you know the trail is, leaving your landwell behind you. You give Cassandra a call and get her to abort the rescue operation, and let her know where she can pick you up. In what seems like no time, you see Isaac’s jeep coming up to meet you, though it’s crewed by Cass instead of the demonbane.

The jeep pulls up alongside you. “Fancy finding you up here,” says Cassandra, smiling. “Are you ready to come home?”

“Yes,” you say, without reservation. You shed your chainmail and throw it in the back, and climb in to the front seat, and use only the minimum amount of effort required to answer Cassandra’s questions about what went down. She let’s off after a little, and you’re left free to veg out for the ride home.

You trudge through the house on your arrival, immediately heading up to your room to change your clothes and lie down. Cassandra would probably want you to try to make it at least to your later classes, but she doesn’t try to talk you around to it. You can’t deal with school right now, or anything else, and you opt for just being alone for a while.
>>
>>39565041

Around the time of National High’s lunch break, you get a text from Moriah. Stil lying in bed, you give it a look.

“Rowan told me you’re back,” it reads.

You text back. “sry I dont feel like schhol right now,” you reply.

“That’s okay,” she texts. “I wanted to ask you something, but you’re not here. I’ll call you later.”

“u can txt it,” you suggest.

“My father’s out of town. He wants me to stay with Maviel, but I’d rather not get between her and Waldric. He only cares if I’m not alone in the house, so I wanted to ask you if you’d be interested in staying over for a few days.”

>>
>>39565346
Autocorrect has been so thoroughly abused that it doesn't even try to fix the shitspeak anymore. It just assumes it's some foreign language, maybe Spanish, and tosses an upside-down question mark in there and calls it a day.
>>
>>39565346

It's available on a good number of American keyboards because they have a lot of Spanish speakers, and a questioning sentence in Spanish has an upside-down question mark at the start as well as a rightside-up one on the end.
>>
>>39565341
Not sure about the smart thing. I actually think we should be smarter, but languid seems to have fun making her out to be pretty dense.

You feel for her. Staying anywhere in proximity to Waldric and Maviel’s special brand of specialness is not your idea of a good time, unless you were purposefully trying to mess with them, which you’re 100% certain Moriah is not.

Moriah’s cool to hang out with. You’ll definitely have to pull her into crazy shenanigans though, maybe after you’ve had a day to wind down.

“hwo many days r we talkin? do u have special plans r somthin or what,” you reply. Geeze, how can people text so fast without typos?

“Father’s gone the entire week,” Moriah replies, “but don’t feel like you have to stay the whole time. I just thought it would be cool if we could hang out without parentals, and if I could avoid becoming an obstacle to Maviel’s romantic conquests.”

You snort at her use of the word ‘parentals’, but you’re also conscious of the fact that in the time it took you to ask her how many days, Moriah wrote a small novel of a response. You guess some people have just had phones since they were sweet little baby childs. “lol,” you text, trying to convey your amusement over the screen, “dse this mean I get 2 check out ur creeper mansion finaly???”
>>
>>39565789

“You are a silly person,” Moriah responds.

“I already knew that 1 tho,” you say.

Your phone buzzes with her reply. “So what do you think?”

“soouds like a reels riot lol” you write. You could have sworn there was only one ‘o’ in ‘sounds’ when you typed it. Too late now.

“When do you think you’ll be over?” she asks.

Wait. “O u mean like rite now??? I shud ask Isaac 1st, dont want him bitching if i disappear aagin. Can u stop by w/ ur car?”

“I can pick you up right after school,” Moriah says. “Would that work?”

“sounds good,” you write, only barely avoiding your earlier mistake. “alright ill see u then I guess”

“Okay,” she writes.

You put away your phone. Huh. Well, maybe chilling with Moriah will be a good way of chilling after all that business with landwells and whatnot.

You sit up, make sure your glasses aren’t going to fall off your face, and head down to talk to Isaac. You don’t find him in his library office, and his jeep’s missing from the garage, so you head down into the lair.

You find Isaac in the basement on the ham radio, chatting it up.

“- don’t have that kind of force projection,” Isaac says. “Just because a kid beats war drums doesn’t mean there’s an army marching in step.”

“There’s something under their smoke signals this time,” says voice over the radio. The voice is unmistakable as Sattler’s. “Doe put another sword team in Seoul.”

Isaac notices your entrance. “I have to go,” he says, setting the mircrophone down on the table.

“Copy,” Satt replies. “Watch yourself.”

Isaac shuts off the radio, and adjusts his ancient leather jacket. The basement has always been kind of chilly. He smiles and speaks. “Cass told me about how your escapade went. It took real grit to keep your cool through all that,” he says. “I’m proud of you.”

We should really go back to Cerra and find another well or two. That way we can still port back to the plane easily and deal with things if someone takes the well at the Field of Rust.
>>
>>39566943
Huh? I don't think you can claim a well that's already been claimed, right?
>>
>>39566965
We've had this discussion already. Several times.

It's easy as fuck to claim a well if the landmaster isn't there. The only thing a landmaster needs to do is touch the well. Doesn't matter if it's claimed or not.

The ones who can't use claimed wells are non-Landmaster mages like Philo or Freddy. They need unclaimed wells or, in some cases, claimed wells that the landmaster has opened up to easier use.
>>
>>39566943
The teleport only works if there is a charge available.
>>
>>39567015
Yes, and? How does that have any bearing on what I said? Charges are per well, not per plane.

If someone comes along and claims the FoR well, and that's the only well we have on Cerra, we're locked out. We'd have to get someone else to do the circle ritual for us.
If we get another well and someone claims the FoR well, we're still locked out of using the FoR well but we can port to that second well and then walk to the FoR to reclaim it.
>>
Do we know how long it takes for a charge to come back?
>>
>>39567077
If we go there and came back home we have no charges left on earth. We don't know how long it takes to charge those things.
>>
>>39567132
Muir woods.
>>
>>39567144
That would be out ticket back home yeah. And then we have no charges left on earth.

Those charges could have other uses we might want too.
>>
>>39567109
It takes a few days. We already have a power that drains a charge and we've used it before.

>>39567132
See above.

>>39567163
The only other use they have is to drain them to instaheal all HP and PP. We did it when we claimed the FoR well.

Also I don't even know what you're trying to say at this point. That we shouldn't get more wells on Cerra and solidify our hold because you don't want to use a charge on teleporting? Seriously?
>>
>>39567163
>>39567228
>The only other use they have is to drain them to instaheal all HP and PP.

>>
>>39567228
>The only other use they have is to drain them to instaheal all HP and PP
We didn't even know about teleporting around and were directly told there is more we can do. Come on man. And that's exactly what I'm saying. Don't know how it's such a horrifying idea that I don't want to go hunting.
>>
You kind of can’t not smile for some reason. “Yeah uh. Thanks,” you say. “It was fun, kind of.” Except for the kind of disturbing parts. “Learned some stuff too. Like that I’m a crappy landmaster.”

Isaac scratches the back of his head. “About that. I think it’s important you learn about your abilities,” he says. “I’m going to see if I can’t find you some kind of teacher or... someone who knows more about landwells than me or Borislav.”

“You have somebody in mind?” you ask, your curiosity piqued.

“No, but I know a lot of people, and maybe one of them does,” he replies. “Just something to keep in mind.”

“Hey, I know Rowan kind of wasn’t supposed to come along,” you say ,”but don’t give her a hard time about it, okay? She really helped out a lot. Like. A lot.”

Isaac nods. “I know,” he says, a hint of fatigue in his expression. “She’s always saving the day.”

“There’s something else though,” you say. “I kind of just wanted to let you know I’m spending a couple days at Moriah’s. Maybe a week? Her dad’s out of town and stuff, doesn’t want to be on her own. You’re... cool with that, right?”

He considers the idea for a moment. “I know Cass would be fine with it, and I know Deletrius’s daughter will make sure you do your homework, so I can’t see anything wrong with it,” says Isaac. “Just make sure you call to check in, every day.”

You grin. “Awesome – thanks Isaac. Well, I’m leaving in a little bit, so uh, I gotta pack and stuff.”

“Remember, if anything comes up, you can come home or call any time,” he informs you. “All right?”

“Yeah yeah, I know,” you say, turning to head back. Isaac returns to his radio back on and starts trying to hail Sattler, and you leave to get your gear in order.

Before heading back up, you realize all your gear is sitting by the stairs. You guess coming in you didn’t really see things from this angle, but it looks like somebody managed to grab your crap before you teleported back to Terra.
>>
>>39567760

You haul everything upstairs with you, and get to packing.

Of course you bring your magic crap, because you never know, and knowing is half the battle. You also bring your Ruger. You realize about halfway through packing clothes and toothbrushes and stuff that you’ve got Roger’s yellow galoshes just sitting on the floor. You totally stole them. Welp. Too late, you guess.

You shake your mind clear and go back to getting all the important things, like your recent purchases in Cerra, and your handy dandy moleskin sketchbook. In the end, everything fits perfectly into your backpack and your space-saving satchel, with the noticeable exception of Zelathis, the lightning sword. It’s like magic. Or it is magic.

You get a text from Moriah informing you of her arrival, and you hurry out to get good stuff done.

--

Stress: 12/103
Sanity: 83/100

You close the door behind you, and head into Moriah’s house. Somehow, it feels a lot emptier knowing papa Crowther isn’t home. The smell of old wood and flowers fills the air.

You can feel a soft kind of happiness coming from Moriah. Seems like she’s excited to have you over.

“I was thinking you could stay in Maviel’s old room,” she says, indicating a direction up the long entryway staircase.

You're ignoring the follow up correction post >>39567263 I made. Yes, there's more that we will be able to do eventually. That's eventually, though. By the time we learn any of it, enough time will have passed for the charges to have been spent and regained at least a couple times. Holding onto charges to spend on powers we don't even know about is foolish when we have a single well on another plane.

I don't know how you don't get this. The FoR well is a single failure point in our ability to travel between Cerra and Terra. If we lose control of it, we're locked out of Cerra. If we have a second well, then we can still act on the plane if the FoR is taken. Why is it so bad to make it easier to keep our wells once we get them?

By the time the FoR well finishes recharging a couple days from now (it's currently drained since we used it to heal during the Zorr thing), the SF well will be only a couple hours away from recharging itself. If we go to Cerra to search for another well, then the SF well will finish in the time it takes to find the new one on Cerra. When we claim the new one we can then port back to the SF well and we'd have a charge ready to use in Muir Woods and the SF well will be back in a couple days.

Also, the instahealing HP and PP requires that we be at the well itself. It's only good for defending wells or claiming new ones.

I guess a return tour to Cerra might not be a bad idea. Hugo is probably going to grab any unclaimed well that's within easy reach of FoR though. We're kind of lucky he didn't grab the FoR right after we left.

In any case we should probably wait for the swarm to settle down before we go.

From the times we drained our wells and let them recharge while we were learning the HP/PP restore thing.

I fully expect to have to dodge beetlemen, magic angel wannabes, and maybe more robots. Still not nearly as miserable as it would be to try to reclaim the FoR without a secondary portal point.

>>39568173
Pretty good start would be to find someone even semi-knowledgeable about Cerran geography and history and ask where important places are. Isaac or Moriah or Papa C would be easy to ask. Landwells are points of convergent leylines, pools of magical energy. Sites of big crazy magic battles (field of rust), and impressive nature stuff (Muir Woods or our mountain) are good bets. Get a list of a few places like that and check them. Might even find a couple in between the major sites since we did manage to bumble our way into finding 2 of the things the 2 times we decided to wander around in nature.
>>
>>39568407

“I thought this was more of a slumber party type thing,” you say. “Your room’s huger than one person can handle alone. That way we can have like, late night deep discussions about life and crap.”

Moriah adjusts her plans to incorporate your input. “There’s a futon in the garage,” she says, setting her backpack down by the door.

“That’ll do,” you say, adding your things to the pile. “But first, you’ve got to show me all the secret passages and stuff.”

“The grand tour,” Moriah says in a foreboding tone.

“Yeah,” you say slowly.

She gives a slight smile. “To the west wing.”

So the Crowthers have a green house full of hell flowers, a sun room full of half-finished sculptures and paintings, a billiards/recreation gym room, a library study/magic practice room, a creepy attic, a creepy cellar, and a secret safe room behind the closet of the master bedroom. The secret passages thing is kind of lacking, but Moriah makes sure to point out all the best hiding spots. You’re not sure how somebody would fit in the bathroom sink cupboard, but more power to whoever tried.

You come to a room on the ground floor, kind of removed from the kitchen and entryway by a long, l-shaped hallway, right next to the larder.

At the end of the hallway, the thick, cushioned door has a golden seven-pointed star blazed into the front. There is no handle.

“This is my father’s work room,” says Moriah. “It’s like a recording studio. Soundproof, but for magic.”

You look for a way to open the door. “What’s in there?” you ask.

Moriah’s expression darkens. “Secrets,” she says.

Ominous. “You’ve got a lot of rooms in your house,” you say.

“Yes,” she agrees.

“So,” you say. “What do you want to do tonight? No dad, no rules, you can do whatever.”
>>
>>39569142

“That’s... yes, I suppose I could,” Moriah replies, surprised at the idea.

“You should totally go wild now while you’ve got the chance,” you say. “We could go out on the town and wreck the place.” Super ultra girls’ night out party, demons only.

“I don’t know if father would agree with me wrecking the town,” she demurs.

“It was just a suggestion,” you say. “What’s your idea? You’ve got to have an idea.”

Moriah hesitates for a moment before trying to develop some kind of interesting activity. “We could... um. Go... to the mall?” she says, without much confidence.

>You could do anything you want, and you want to go to the mall?

Right now we know how to open a portal between two landwells that we own, but we've seen before that they can be used to shift planes between corresponding points. Like when Philo turned our mountain well into a portal to Hell. There wasn't a well on the other side, it just punched a hole in the overlap point or something.

We could probably learn how to do that. Plane shifting would be crazy useful.

She could go anywhere she wants, and she chooses the mall?

“The Mori has spoken,” you say. “But let’s mess with people though, like. Shadows and spirits and stuff, while we’re there.”

“That sounds dangerous,” she says.

“Well, we’ll feel it out,” you say, heading back toward the front door with her. “Maybe it won’t be. Anyway, you’ll have to show me where you get all your goth stuff at.”

She brings a glove hand up to the point of her chin, in thought. “Maybe I could help you pick out an outfit,” she says.

Moriah approved outfit? You think everybody should have one of those. “Heh. Yeah – oh, but it has to look good on demon Sierra,” you say. “I mean, you know I’m not really done doing demon puberty or whatever, so check this out.”

You take off your jacket and add it to the pile of bags, and drop your glamors. The tank top you’re wearing doesn’t impede your spines as much sleeves would, which probably means you’re going to have to get some more in the future. You let your fire out as well, but try to funnel it so it doesn’t burn your shirt.

You strike a pose, curling your tendrils and tail in a kind of coy way. “Check it,” you say. “I’m fucking ghost rider.”

Moriah is enchanted. “There was an Inferian sage named Cudakazix who taught that true beauty is power,” she says.

“That sounds about right,” you say.

She nods, smiling slightly. “Fire is the manifest vessel of power in the thousand hells, according to the Book of Suffering.”

You run that by your brain. “So... being on fire is about as hot as it gets for demon guys then, huh? In a strictly religious... philosophical sense?” Good to know.

For some reason, Moriah’s feelings take a turn for the worse, and she deflates somewhat. “You should be careful,” she says. Moriah takes her keys out from her pockets, and heads for the door. “Let’s go.”

You put your jacket and glamors back on, and follow.

--

You and Moriah enter a store that feels like the hellish spawn of Hot Topic, a BDSM fetish shop, and the hideout of a satanic coven of witches. The smell of leather and incense fill the air, and everywhere you look there’s corsets, boots, shirts with metal bands and vaguely menacing designs, and belts. Sweet mercy, the belts. Belts everywhere, of every kind. Rhinestones, chains, canvass material of every color imaginable.

The woman behind the counter has infinite piercings, neon ruby-red hair drawn up in pigtails, and a weird shirt and vest combo decked out with dangling pentagrams. She has both her feet up on the counter, and is in the midst of some novel with the back of a shirtless woman on the cover, surrounded by dark things clawing toward her.

She also wears a peppy white pin button, which reads, ‘Hi, I’m Jill!’ You get a slight vibe of something from her. Weak, very weak, but magic. (Jill: 10 HP; 6 PP)

Jill the store clerk glances up briefly at Moriah. “Never seen you here on a school night before,” she says in a bored tone.

“No,” Moriah replies, heading in.

The clerk is about to go back to her book, but does a double take as she notices you following Moriah in. “Excuse me, can I help you?” she asks, making a point of sounding unhelpful.

“All right, let’s have it,” you say, steeling yourself for constructive criticism that you don’t really care about. “On a scale of one to metal, how much potential do I have? And if so, what’s the one thing you’d recommend to crank it up a notch?”

Jill closes her book, though keeps her place with a finger, and looks you up and down. You execute a stylish turn, keeping your arms out to your sides so she can see the whole picture.

“Your shirt’s boring, your jeans are cookie-cutter, and don’t even get me started on the shoes,” she lists. “Take your clothes and burn them. That’ll be a major improvement.”

Harsh. “Is there anything that’s not terrible?”

“Your hair’s rad,” she says, already back into her sketchy urban fantasy novel again. “Almost looks like you went at it yourself with a pair of safety scissors. Need anything else?”

“I’m with the frequent flier,” you mutter, hastily evacuating from Jill’s disdainful presence and uncannily keen eye. (+2 Stress: 14)

You duck a poorly thought out display of extra-wide belts, and bob and weave through the tightly packed maze of racks, shelves, and tables to locate Moriah.

“She’s something,” you say, catching up. “She a witch then? Or are we supposed to call them ‘magic people’ now?”

“She’s trying new things,” Moriah replies. She picks up a sheer, ragged top, and holds it up at you, tilting her head for a better angle.

“That’s uh. That’s not the kind of thing I usually wear,” you say, rubbing your neck nervously.

Moriah sets it down. “There are things called layers,” she says flatly. “I’m wearing four.”

You examine her outfit, which you haven’t really noticed. Moriahness kind of just blurs together after a while to you. But right now, she’s wearings a vest-shirt-shawl combo with a tattered denim skirt. And of course, under all that, she’s got tights and dusky transparent shirt thing.

“Don’t you get hot?” you ask.
>>
>>39572509

“One of the reasons I prefer winter,” she says. “Although, I’ve seen you eat pizza straight out of the oven, so we can rule out you dressing too warmly.”

“I don’t know. There’s a difference between heat and stuffiness,” you say.

“What kind of outfit do you want?” asks Moriah, suddenly looking over at you.

Uh oh. You thought you weren’t going to be incorporated in the decision making process.

“I’ll make sure it works without your glamors,” she says, comparing two identical bracelets. “Give me something to go off of. You can do what you want while I look around.”

>Well, whatever you get, I gotta be able to run around in it. Otherwise it’ll get torn up if I have to get dangerous on somebody.

"Sir, torpedoes detected! It's the U-Boats!"
"Hard to stern! Full power! I'll be damned if the only boats left in these waters are /u/'s!"
>22
Your boat is hit by 4 torpedos. Each does
>14
28 damage. 112 damage total. Health -12/100. You are sinking.

Red lights flash across the ship and warning klaxons blaze their signal. You pull yourself to your feet and jump to the ships radio. "All hands, this is your captain, we are taking on water. Evacuate, and god speed!" God help the survivors, who knows that the /u/-boats will do to them.
A single glistening mark goes down your face as water rushes in. Your final words are lost to the depths. Moriah's brother never had a chance.

“Well, I guess it’d be kind of cool to have something nice, but not super formal,” you say.

“More semi-formal or business casual?” she asks, putting her current items of interest down.

“Eh. One of those?” you guess. “You know, like, not quite as nice as a fancy dress, but nice.”

“I know what you want,” Moriah says to herself.

She’s about to head off, but you hold her up. “Actually, this reminds me. I bought some Cerran jewelry that’d totally be something you’d wear,” you say, opening up your satchel. You pull out a couple pieces of the obsidian set, and hand them to Moriah for examination.

“It has a distinctive style to it,” she says, holding the volcanic glass up to the light. “An old kind of... authenticity. You can tell it’s all done by hand.” The illumination barely filters through the smoky depths of the necklace’s stones, nor those of the bracelets. “How much did you buy it for?”

“Oh, it was pretty cheap,” you say. “No unions or minimum wage laws in medieval times, I guess.”

Moriah hands the pieces back to you, and you pack them away in your bag. “After I move out, I want to try traveling to a different plane,” she says. “There’s a lot of mystery out there.”

“It was kind of cool, bumming around in another world and stuff,” you say. Except all the beetlemen. You’re okay without that part.

Moriah looks pretty embroiled in searching through the hundreds and hundreds of belt options available, so you decide to step back for a little bit and have a look around.

You find yourself kind of lost, overwhelmed by things that no real person would ever wear out in public. Or maybe you wandered into the unspeakable section of the store? Fortunately, Moriah extracts you from the trouble and starts draping clothes over your arms, one after the other. “Put all of this on,” she instructs, steering you toward the a dressing booth and locking you inside.

With no options given you, you examine the goods.

There’s a pair of sleek black boots – nothing like the pair of clunky stompers Moriah’s got in her closet – along with a halter top and a short-cropped kind of jacket kind of thing, as well as skirt. You don’t get what it actually looks like, so you go ahead and actually change clothes.

You check how things work going all-natural. As it turns out, the sleeves and shoulders of the jacket have this kind of lace style thing going on along the seams that lets your spines poke through without being obtrusive. Meanwhile, the shirt in the back is like, a million independent threads that your back-spines slip right on through. And since it’s not a one piece thing, with some minor adjusting, you can get your tail out over the skirt, but under the top.

Checking yourself in the mirror, you almost look like a different Sierra. Like, one that could schmooze with the vampire people from Underworld, or throw on sunglasses and attend clandestine business transactions.

In this getup, you’d definitely be the one in control. Surveying your domain, delivering pithy one liners, and generally being the most stylish person you can imagine. (+1 Sanity: 84)

You replace your glamors.

“How is it?” Moriah asks from outside.

You step out of the booth and let her see for herself. “I had something cool to say about this, but I forgot what it was,” you say. “But... I like it. Oh yeah. I mean, I’m pretty sure I’ve never bought a skirt before, ever, but I’m kind of looking forward to owning one now.”

You feel a hint of pride mingled with satisfaction coming from your friend. “I’m glad you like it,” she says. “It was hard to find things that accommodate back spines without being overtly inappropriate.”

You realize she’s right. “Man, clothes are going to be a bitch.”

“You could always switch to Halth fashion,” Moriah says. “Oh. While I was waiting, I found this.” She hands you a black roll of soft material.

“What’s this?” you ask, hefting the bundle.

“It’s just some material,” she says. “You can use it as a horn wrap.”

“A what?”

“In the courts, the ladies usually wrap their horns,” Moriah explains. “It looks nice.”

You squint at her. “Wait. Do all the demonettes cover up their horns?”

“Not all of them,” she says. “Inferians don’t, for the most part. It’s a culture thing.”

“Not wrapping your horns is like going topless, isn’t it,” you say.

“Um. That’s not quite accurate,” she says, although you can tell she’s a little flustered. “But... horns are an item of interest. I’ll leave it at that.”

Stewing on that, you go change again into your original clothes. You and Moriah browse around for a little bit until heading out. You buy your too stylish for school clothes and stuff them in your satchel.

“I’m glad I could take you there,” says Moriah. “It’s one of my favorite stores.” She checks a clock on a nearby wall as you leave. “We have some time left. I don’t have too much homework tonight.”

“Eh. I have homework too though,” you say. “I mean. I’ll have to call somebody about it. Let’s just grab some chows and head back.”

“I haven’t eaten anything all day,” Moriah says, as if she could possibly just remember that right now.

“Then we’ll double the eating,” you promise. You lead the way to the food court.

There’s a lot of options, but only one will suffice. You get a big bowl of spaghetti. Maybe not the best since it’s not homemade, and it’s not from some fat Italian grandpa, but whatever.

Moriah gets some salad thing. Geeze.

Anyway, while you eat, you give Moriah the rundown on your adventure, skimming over the rougher parts, all the way through to Canada and the ice lake.

“I think he was a dragon,” says Moriah.

You snort. “I think he had dragons on the mind for sure,” you say.

“He was taking off his clothes so he wouldn’t rip them when he changed form,” she tells you.

“Yeah, I think that’s exactly what he thought,” you say, chuckling at the double entente. So many plays on words.

Moriah decides to change topics. “What about this landmaster?” she asks. “I bet he knows more about land magic than what he told you. When are you going to talk to him again?”

>You say that like I can just call him up, but I don’t know anything about him. I don’t know his cell, I don’t know his last name, he didn’t say anything.

Sierra, caller ID is a thing on practically all phones, the number is on the history of the home phone.
>>
“Roger or Hugo?” you ask.

“The one that doesn’t want to finish dueling you for your landwells,” says Moriah.

“Well, it’s not like I can just call him up. I mean, maybe I could figure out his address on google maps, and maybe I could call his throwaway backup phone, but that’s not really enough to get in touch with somebody,” you say.

“You have his location and his number,” Moriah states. “How is that not enough information?”

You shrug. “I don’t know. I mean, us meeting was kind of random. I don’t know if it really counts. Like, it’s not like he’s just down the street. He’s a paranoid syrup huffer hundreds of miles off.”

“You shouldn’t judge people like that,” says Moriah, an unmistakable seriousness in her voice.

“Like what?” you ask, confused.

“All I wanted was for you to go away when we first met,” she says. “Someone else would have just brushed me off as some paranoid weird chick.” She pokes at her half-eaten lettuce, without raising her gaze. “You didn’t. And... now we’re friends. So. Don’t judge people, because you’re better than that.”

“Mori, I don’t mean it like that,” you say. “I don’t know, I’m not good at explaining it. He was just weird.”

Moriah continues slowly shuffling her greens around. “I’m just saying,” she says lowly. “It’s not that easy for everyone to get to know people, Sierra. You’re just... you’re really good at it.”

You finish eating your stuff in silence, and a minute later the both of you head back out to the parking lot to drive back to Mori’s house.

--

“Oh, oh. Shaun of the Dead,” you say, pointing at the Crowther’s hilariously large flat screen television. They’ve got a whole little movie theater establishment going on in their rec room.
>>
>>39576766

“I watched it too recently,” she replies, snuggling deeper beneath her wooly blankets, but keeping her laptop balanced in her lap. “Have you seen Hot Fuzz?”

“Pfft. Duh.” You start flipping through the Netflix options. So many. “I don’t know. Do you have any super out there recommendations?”

Moriah doesn’t even look up from her laptop. “Ink. The first half is slow, though.”

“We’ll add it to the list of potentials,” you say. You toward the other end of the couch at Moriah. “What are you doing on your computer?”

“Facebooking,” Moriah says.

You give her a suspicious look. “I didn’t know you were all into facebook,” you say.

“For the right reasons,” she says. “You said you didn’t know anything about Roger. Now, here’s your chance.” She shows you her computer, and you’re greeted by a bright picture of Roger sitting on some precipice, overlooking vast stretches of Canadian wasteland. You mean forestland.

It’s the facebook page of Roger Lund.

Moriah’s expression is completely flat. “You can facebook stalk anyone.”

Nah, more like we accidentally send Roger a pic of her and us making stupid faces with our glamours off.

Facebook stalking is serious business. Actually found my biological father on there.
>>
>>39577553
Sounds like he didn't want to be found.
>>
“How the heck did you even find that?” you ask, both bewildered and intrigued.

Her jaws part slightly with pride. “Williams Lake has only one high school, and only one Roger,” Moriah replies.

You narrow your eyes at her. “You’ve done this before, haven’t you,” you say.

Moriah shrugs. “It’s a life skill.”

You grab your blanket to yourself with your shadow and scoot over so you can have a better view, mindful not to accidentally knock your horns into Moriah’s skull. “All right, fine. Weird creepy things in real life beat movies any day,” you say to yourself. “Let’s do this. Take it to the limit.”

“It begins,” she intones, clicking on the photo logs and scrolling to the earliest entries.

You sort through the photographic and textual evidence, pouring over dozens of little snippets of conversations and deducing possible relationships. Moriah gives you some hints here or there, but she seems content to let you do the bulk of the actual stalking.

Is stalking somebody over facebook creepy if you’re actually just doing it kind of for fun? Whatever. This is why you don’t do facebook. That’s the moral.

Lots of outdoorsy pictures. Hiking, snowmen, mountains, forests. There’s clusters here and there taken in Vancouver. There’s a lot of people in a lot of the photos, generally including a bunch of freckly brown haired friend people. You even spot Nemo a couple of times, along with the mom. One friend prevalently appears in the photos, a big blonde guy, maybe some kind of football player type. There’s a couple photos of Roger in a band, mostly with his friends.
>>
>>39577703

Then you notice a different kind of trend. The time gaps between uploaded photos gets longer and longer, with the subject matter veering from group shots in various locations to pictures of rivers, landscapes, and derelict farm buildings, with nobody in sight. It’s a kind of depressing transition that makes you feel melancholy for some reason.

Even if it's none of your business, you're curious about what changed. The guy you met didn't look as gregarious as his history suggests.

You’re surprised how much you can actually learn about somebody from stalking them anonymously through the internet.

“I wonder what happened,” Moriah comments.

“He gradually succumbed to being Canadian,” you say, trying to file the information for later. “Anyway... you ready for movies?”

“Remote,” she says, holding out a sinewy hand.

You shadow the controller to her, and after selecting a movie, Moriah hits play.

I think the next thread will be next week, Monday or Tuesday. I'll post on Twitter later.

I'm just waiting for Sierra to wake up in the middle of the night hearing Moriah making weird noises and then wondering why her shadow feels funny for a couple seconds before she notices that Moriah is sitting on it.

When do we get a sharp metal straw to use to drink people easier?
>>
I feel really dumb for not having caught it before. We were wondering why Roger's so wary about everything, but we hang around a dude who has a gun specifically designed for use against dragons. It's probably not a common thing to have, but someone at some point thought "We should make a gun for hunting dragons" and then they made them and started selling them because there's presumably a demand.

I'm not implying that he knows about Orias or that Orias actually hunts dragons, but if those guns exist then that points to some fucked up shit having gone down and possibly still occurring.
>>
>>39577934
Issac's crossbow is made specifically for killing demons like us.
>>
>>39577993
Isaac's crossbow is specifically made to pierce magical defenses. It's not an anti-demon bow, but that's what most of them will end up being used for. We also don't know if it was a 1-off thing or if it's part of a line of crossbows that all have a specific name. A dragon gun points to an entrenched demand or tradition great enough to have a model of gun made for it. Not a single weapon, an entire type of weapon.

>Chitin Plates: Ranthix's body is completely armored by leathery chitin plates. These plates provide protection from physical harm and insulation from natural elements, and in no way impede movement. In addition, the sharp edges of the plates can cut opponents during grappling. Armor: ~9 (Acid), ~7 (Slashing, piercing, ballistic), ~6 (Electric, Fire), ~4 (Blunt), ~4 (Cold). Physical characteristic. [IN]
vs
>Child of Night: Sierra's body automatically makes use of surrounding darkness as a defense mechanism. Whenever under threat of harm, it pulls shadows around itself in a dark, watery barrier that dampens physical force, disperses energy, and absorbs magical energy. Ambient light weakens this shadow barrier. Armor: (Pitch black) ~5 (Dark) ~3 (Dim) ~1 Passive ability. [VE]

Chitin Plates is obviously better overall, but I just thought it was kinda interesting how our shadow armor is nearly as tough as Ranthix is against physical damage in the pitch dark while also providing defense against magic. Pretty neat.

doesn't necessarily means she's dead, just that that the reunion will be death related, like meeting at a massacre, maybe a school shooting

We'll need that clarity potion if we visit the grave. It's making me feel tight in the throat just thinking about going. Sierra would probably +70 stress as soon as she saw the headstone.
Now I'm thinking of a fucked up scene where she begs Moriah to help her talk to the ghost or something and Mori being all sad when she can't do.
