The year is 2089, and on the surface, this world seems just the same as ours. If you look more closely though, you will find psychics, mages, mythological monsters and more, all hidden from the general populace.
You are an agent of the Order of the Magus Hunters, the organisation keeping this secret from the rest of the world. They are troubleshooters, police, military and assassins all in one, and all so that the world can be safe.

The options are a guideline, not an absolute, which is why I will always include a Write in option. I may occasionally forget to add it but feel free to do so anyway. Some options I list are good, some are bad, most won’t be really awesome. I leave it up to you to find ways to do that.
Also feel free to ask things if they’re not entirely clear. I reserve the right to dodge the issue if it’s done for plot reasons, but otherwise I’ll gladly provide more information.
>>
>Last time on Magus Hunter Quest: You spend some time training, find out your father is trying to get hold of the mansion, but thanks to some legalese you find that you permanently own it until either you or Wooster break your bond. Once that’s settled, you almost finish the work on the shooting range, after which you use Milly’s analysis and DCI Nettle’s knowledge to pick a first target to crack down on the ‘Wizzie’ drug.

You arrive at your chosen location around 2 pm. The buildings in the area range from houses slightly larger than the average person would be able to afford to some that are barely smaller than your own. You see DCI Nettles spoke the truth. There’s no way to covertly get onto a rooftop here.

Carefully scouting out the place reveals that the smaller buildings through which the alleys lead are a few smaller and older houses. Raphael theorises that they’d be part of an older village, from before the wealthy settled down here in the last fifty years.

From what you can tell, some of them seem to be uninhabited, as evidenced by the “for sale” signs hanging from their housefront. Several of them have obviously been vandalised. You find one right next to the alley entrance where Milly said the dealers would most likely hang out. This might be your best chance to stay out of view while conducting surveillance, but you’d be breaking and entering.

>1. Break into the house and set up shop there. You don’t even have to damage it further thanks to your powers.
>2. Go into the alleys, try to find a better, more legal place.
>3. Simply patrol the alleys, try to find the dealers asap.

You tell the team to get ready to patrol in the alleys, after which you do something you realise you should have done before you left. You give Helena a call.

“Hello Agent Sanders.”

“Hey ‘Vindicator Primus Weston’.” She stresses your title in a slightly exaggerated fashion. “Why the formality?”

“I was hoping you could lend me your skills with Dax. You might have heard of a magical drug hitting the streets, and I thought you’d be a great help with tracking it down.” You tell her.

“Hmm, I see. I’m not doing anything right now that can’t be delayed for a day or two. Where and when do you need me?” She asks. You explain to her where you are and she tells you she’ll be there in half an hour.

You lay in the call and lead your team into the alleys. You’re all dressed in clothes that blend in with the area. Nothing too fancy, but not too casual either. You might be mistaken for some upper-middleclass businesspeople.

The area is larger than you thought it was, and you estimate it’ll take at least an hour or two to get through it all, so you decide to just scout out the immediate surroundings while waiting for Helena.

By the time she arrives in a tiny car that probably wouldn’t fit more than two people, you’ve searched roughly a quarter of the place, without much to show for. She’s greeted warmly by the team, after which you roughly lay out your situation.

“Very well. If there’s anything unusual, Dax should be able to pick up on it, and once he knows what it smells like, he’ll be able to find any of it within a kilometer or so.” She informs you.

You head back into the area, and you find a small abandoned shop of some kind with a parking lot besides it, barely room for five cars.

The rest of the search is fairly fruitless, and by 4 pm you searched through everything. It seems the shop, where you are now, is more or less in the center of the place.

“Alright team, we’re going to split up. They’re probably not here yet, so we try to find them as they enter. Don’t engage on your own, but call for the rest of us if you find anything.” You tell them.

“Liam, Nathan, you two, go back to where we entered and hole up in the building. It’s the most likely avenue for them to come in. Katherine, Blake, Raphael, you three take the northern side, me and Helena will take the southern side.”

You split up, and head to the side you take. As you leave the rest of the team behind, Helena takes the word. “So, you straight up said my name. Does that mean I can call you Michael now?” Helena smirks at you. “Or do I have to say ‘sir’? Though I must say I’ve always had a certain fondness of ‘Oh captain my captain’.”

“Hmm, I don’t know. ‘Oh Captain my captain’ has a certain ring to it… Or perhaps ‘Master’?” You look at her, trying to keep a straight face. You manage. Mostly.

She doesn’t, and starts blushing. “Damn, I’m usually not outdone in this..” She says.

“Michael will do fine though.”

“Ok, Michael.” You share a good laugh. As you pass the shop though, Dax starts growling.

“What is it Dax?” Says Helena. He produces a few more barking and growling noises before Helena ‘translates’. “There’s something about this shop. It feels threatening to him. I’m not sure if actual magic is involved, but he might be on to something here.”

You’re not that far away from the team yet. If you call for them now, they’ll be here within the minute.

You quickly reach for your coms and send the quick message to group up, and tell Helena to stay put for a moment. You cautiously approach the shop and reach out with your mind. It doesn’t take long before you find something. And that something is a wall. A solid wall of magical defence. You cautiously probe it, but it seems to just be something to keep people out and keep things hidden inside. As you back off a bit you realise that if you just get back a little bit, you don’t even notice there’s anything there.

So it’s meant to camouflage, rather than to keep you out, you speculate, and true enough, you manage to push past it without finding or triggering any kind of magical alert. Once you’re inside, your senses are overwhelmed with magic. You feel like someone just took a sledgehammer to your head as you recoil from the aura, no, the stink of magic inside the shop. It’s definitely the drug alright. Continuing to expose yourself like this might actually do you harm, so you pull back. Actually being in the building shouldn’t do anything, but with your mind unsheltered there…

You notice the rest of the team is there already, but Helena’s explaining it to them. You continue your probe. Trying to find any kind of traps or alarms. And you find one. There’s a basic tripwire warning spell on the door. It shouldn’t be too hard to dispel without tripping it, it mostly seems to be a precaution against mundanes, you figure as you notice a brand new steel chain keeping the door shut.

You return to your body and report to your team what you found. “I best keep Dax out of the building then, it’d drive him mad.” Says Helena.

“Raphael, how strong would a camouflage like that be? What class of magus are we talking about here?” You ask.

Raphael takes a moment to takes a look at the spell himself before he replies. “It’s fairly hard technically, but it doesn’t require a lot of power. I’d say about a class 2 or 3 magus? 4 tops, but I doubt it. Still, he’s really skilled at applying his magic.”

“Very well. Dispel the alarm on the front door then.” You tell him.

He approaches the door, makes a few gestures and his hands start glowing. The door starts glowing too, but considering Raphael’s reaction, that’s not supposed to happen. You react in time to shield Raphael as a burst of lightning hits him. You’re dazed for a moment as you recover from diverting the hit a bit, but it seems Raphael’s fine. It seems the door has partially molten as the spell fired and is now open. Nathan and Katherine rush towards him.

“Darn, sorry sir, it seems there was a trap hidden under it. Really well hidden.” He says.

“That’s ok, I failed to notice it too when I checked it out.” You say. “So, we can assume that whoever put it here is now alerted. That means that either he’s gonna come and check on whoever tripped the alarm and got a face full of lightning, or he’s going to stay away from this place.”

“Sir?” Nathan says. He’s looking inside the building. “With the amount of stuff I’m seeing here, I doubt he’d be willing to give up on it.”

You join him, and behind the doorway you can see several crates lying in the shop, one of them open and filled with small bags of pills.

“Ok people, we can use this. Whoever put this here will be checking up on this. Get out of sight, we’re going to lay an ambush.” You tell your team.

Everyone scatters to find good ambush locations as you call Lilliana. “Hello ma’am. I’ve found something promising, but I’m on a bit of a clock now though.” You quickly explain your findings to her. “And now we’re setting up an ambush.”

“Hmm, good work. I’m sending you backup, but I doubt it’ll be there in time. We’re having a bit of a situation here in London so most of our teams are on mission. Best I can do for you is in two hours. I’ll tell them to report to you when they approach, and to not enter the area without your say-so.”

“Thank you ma’am.” You lay in the call. Meanwhile, everyone’s looked out for hiding locations around the shop and report back to you.

“Ok, Nathan, Blake, you’ll be in close, behind the hedge. Liam, that rooftop is perfect for you. The rest of us, we’ll be in the houses here.” You say. “Helena-“

“I know, I’ll stay out of sight.” She interrupts you. “I’m not here to fight.”

You nod, and the team splits up. You, Raphael, Katherine and Helena break into a house opposite of the shop. You’re far away enough to not immediately get involved, but you’re more than close enough to both fire your handgun, in Katherine’s case, and to use your powers in support through the windows. Helena and Dax go to the other side of the house to stay out of the way.

Now it’s waiting, and relying on Liam to spot them. You don’t have to wait long. After ten minutes, Liam reports seeing a van slow down around where your own cars are parked. A short while later, you can see people approaching through the blinds of the window.

One person who is probably the dealer. Dressed not much unlike you, but a bit more… Rebellious. It’s a specifically tailored look to belong to this part of town but to still say “hey, I’m a bad boy”. He’s probably around twenty, twenty two. He’s obviously not the leader though. Behind him are a goon, there’s no other word for it, big, strong, to make sure the dealer stays safe. The other two people there are a lot more interesting though.

They are wearing something that can best be described as the bastard child between combat gear and robes. Their faces are masked, and a red gem of some kind adorns their forehead. Unlike the other two, whom you can see have handguns on them, these two are completely unarmed.

The dealer is arguing with the two strange men, but they hardly respond, preferring to scan their surroundings instead.

You let them approach, but as you do you whip out your phone and take a photo of the strange men and send it to Milly. She might be able find out something about them.

Meanwhile the men come closer and finally reach the parking lot. They stand still for a moment as they look around. The dealer keeps talking though, and now you can hear most of what he’s saying.

“-telling you people, I can handle this. Probably just one of the damn kobold or goblin pests scampering about. You people always act as if I’m just a child. I put that alarm there myself, I can do just fine.”

The robed men stopped looking around, and approach the slightly scorched pavement from where the lightning bolt hit your shield. The dealer and his goon follow after him. They’re a bit too far away to hear properly now, but you can pick up the gist of things.

“-ightning strike here or someth-“

“-put more stuff in there? Damn it, I told.. -I can handle things myself…”

“-n’t need you people to…”

Doesn’t seem like the dealer was aware of the trap himself. Considering he was acting proud about the alarm, it’s doubtful he put the camouflage there either.

They’re all standing dead in the middle of your team. The two strange men are hunkered down around the blast, probably trying to scry what happened. This is the perfect moment to strike.

There are two robed men...
>>39567926
We should indeed try to go non-lethal...
Priority on the two robed men.
Order Liam to shoot one with non-lethal and use >1 on the other?
Once the robed men are down, we should let Catherine do the talking, force them to stand down.
>>
>>39568103
this sounds good
>>
>>39568136
addendum to my post here, we should try to take mystic A alive if possible as well as the dealer if we can
>>
>>39568159
My hope is to take everyone alive, but if the Goon goes, oh well. If the Dealer runs, we can most-likely track him, and he'll either rabbit to someone or will be easy to follow.
>>
>>39567926
>Liam can snipe one of the robes
>Blake can rush the other one.
>Nathan can grab the punk
>We can psionic sledge the goon
>Raphael can buff Nathan
>Kate can clean up after anyone who messes up

Of course we have no time to bark all of this so we can just hope for the best
>A - now!
>Sledge the goon
>>
Just wanted to pop in to say that I really enjoy this quest and you're doing a great job Supervisor.

Oh, and if our dad continues to be a dick, call him out on being an abysmal failure in everything that doesn't have to do with his job. Husband, Father, Decent Person, etc.
>>
>>39567926
Liam snipes one caster while Blake rushes the other with non-lethal we hold down the brat while the rest take down goon and covers whoever fucks up.
>>
>>39568283
He wants us to hate him. Lets not give him the satisfaction and prove we can be the perfect commander and professional, without having to be taught to be.

It's the perfect thorn in his side.
>>
>>39568283
Now now. We've been raised better than that.
Certainly not by him though!
>>
>>39568228
You can quickly give orders before initiating the ambush.

Anyway, there seems to be some conflict about killing goon and 1 mystic vs non-lethal on everyone.

So just to be sure, initiating a new vote on that.
>>
>>39568390
I say the goon can go, the mystic I'm not too sure about, though we only really need one.
>>
>>39568346
>>39568363

Does he want us to hate him? Cause the impression that I got was he just doesn't care unless it relates to his work.

He's not likely to care about other stuff outside of research related things. So if we implied that he was a shitty scribe, then he might get pissed.
>>
>>39568390
Non-lethal on everyone but goon.
>>
>>39568418
I still think the best course of action would be to just let him do his shit, unless he starts experimenting on the ghost.
>>39568390
I'm samefag from >>39568228 and if Liam can incapacitate the mystic without killing, that would have been preferable. But I do not insist if it should make things more difficult.
>>
>>39568390
Full non-lethal, all concentrate on mystics before moving on to the others
>>
>>39568390
we only need 1 mystic and the dealer himself.
>>
>>39568418
It's not that does, so much as doing so would make him feel justified, because HE is knowledgeable, experienced, and is a member of the Cerebrum. We're his upstart son who's taking this massive find away from him.

He'd love it to be personal, it'll fuel any future things he does to get what HE needs, because HE is right here.
>>
>>39568594

Okay, so act professionally and detached with him then.

Maybe we should call our mother and ask what the hell she saw in him.
>>
>>39568390
Non-lethal on as many as possible.
>>39568530
>Just let him do his shit
That's what we've been doing and it's the best course of action.
>>
>>39568625
Intelligence, power and status?
>>
I assume Liam can't take a non lethal shot from the roof? because I based my vote of >>39568332
on the fact that liam couldn't contribute non-lethal
>>
>>39568625
mommy, daddy is being a dick again...

She didn't strike me as a person who would put out for someone who was that unpleasant.
>>
>>39568652
He can, but he's relatively far away so it'll be harder.
>>
>>39568667
Yeah, we can ask her but not like that.
>>
>>39568698
I cannot see anything wrong with my previous statement.
>>39568694
Maybe Raphael could buff Liam as he goes for the leg-shot?
>>
>>39568680
She did strike me as a practical woman who knows what she wants.
In this case a worthy partner.

So, calling it here, try nonlethal on everyone but the goon. Roll me a mind check for psionics.

You quickly inform everybody of their task. With that done, you ask Raphael to aid you and give the go signal. Strengthened in both focus and mind, you grab hold of one of the mystics. As you focus on your task, you’re faintly aware of Katherine taking a shot and hitting the goon in the chest with her handgun. Next to that, Liam shoots the other mystic with a stunner while Blake approaches him and grabs hold. Nathan hits the dealer straight in the chest with his own stunner.

The Mystic pushes back though. He’s a psychic too, you now sense, and not a weak one. You’re lucky Blake is next to him now or he might have just shook you off and retaliated. Still you feel the pressure on your mind, and you’re doing everything you can to keep ahold of him.

Suddenly you begin to start asking yourself why. Why are you doing this? Well, you don’t have to-

No! He’s trying to invade your mind. It seems his disciplines are comparable to yours, and he’s of comparable power too. But Raphael is pouring everything he has into you. You push him out of your mind completely, and the probing attempts to get pack in fail.

He’s standing up though, and he turns his head to you. The red gem on his forehead is flaring up.

You give up your attempts at holding him abruptly, and use the moment of imbalance to push straight into his mind. He throws up considerable defences, and you realise that you wouldn’t have gotten through were it not for the surprise and Raphael backing you.

That’s it. You’re in. But is he? It’s yours to decide now. You twist his mind. Or is it yours? Did he manage? Perhaps he has, and he’s trapped inside yours now.

You have him in your hands. There is no secret in his mind that cannot be yours. While you imprison his consciousness in a confusing nightmare, you scan through his memories. You quickly determine that it’s a her, not a him, and… That your efforts are being hampered with. You see information. Important information, about this drug, about their organisation. But it’s locked away. Out of your reach. Trapped inside a red gemstone of some kind. This isn’t your expertise, so you’re afraid you might damage the info if you try to break your way in. You decide to let it be for now, and focus on taking out your opponent. By now, she’s exhausted herself trying to fight your prison, and it takes a minimal effort to knock her out.

You pull back from her mind, and you see a dead goon, a knocked out dealer, a knocked out robed woman and a restrained robed man. Or woman, apparently the robes are concealing enough that you can’t really tell. Blake is holding him down in some kind of judo hold, and he has several stunner darts stuck to him, but he’s still violently struggling. It doesn’t really matter though, the fight is over.

You turn back to the woman whom you knocked out, and you notice the red gem on her forehead is cracked and no longer glowing. You quickly double-check, but the information is still trapped behind the mental barriers.
>>
>>39569733
Because each time we get a 100, a Lovecraftian entity from the void between realities takes notice of us and says "Oh, this looks fun. Let's see what THIS does!".

Let me just make something clear, a 100 is never a bad thing. It has extra side-effects, but I'll never screw you over with those.

Writing for restraining, calling Lilliana and then Milly.

You lead Katherine, Raphael and Helena out of the house.

“Restrain them and get them in there.” You point to the house you just left.

“Sir, this one’s a magus.” Blake tells you. “He tried to lightning bolt me. Shame that doesn’t really work on me, now isn’t it? Even tried to shock me out of this hold” This elicits a short burst of futile struggle from the magus.

“Ok, you stay with him then. The other one is a psion, but she won’t be getting up any time soon.” Your team carries all four of them to the house. Seems Katherine was using a stunner too. You suppose she prefers not to kill. Understandable for her position.

You get your com out and inform Lilliana that you have four captives, two or three of which might prove useful to gain information.

“Well done. The backup team will be there in an hour and a half to take things over. They’ll handle the cleanup of the site and the prisoners. In the mean time, I’d appreciate anything you can find out about them or the drug. Without damaging them of course.”

“Understood ma’am. They’re mystics though. One of them a psion the other a magus. The dealer mentioned using magic as well, but on the lowest scale.” You tell her, and describe the garments of the two.

“Well, I was afraid of that. The operation in London I was telling you about? It was a drug bust too. We ran into a few dozen of those people and suffered some losses. Most of them got away and the only ones we got our hands on are dead.”

That’s pretty big.

“Who did we lose?” You ask.

Lilliana proceeds to name about 15, 16 names. Garland and Blister’s goon are amongst the dead. Blister himself isn’t, what a shame. You recognise some others from teams you’ve worked with. There’s a lot more wounded than dead though.

“How could this happen?” You ask.

“We caught each other by surprise. Our boys had a lead on a shipment of drugs they were following up and trying to intercept. Apparently it wasn’t drugs but people they were transporting though. Soldiers from the looks of things. The Vindex Primus speculates that they’re using the drugs merely as a means to finance themselves. Which makes it all the more pressing for us to crack down on it.”

“So, do we know who they are then?”

“I wish I could say yes. But sadly all we know is that they’re well organised and supplied, and from the looks of their members they must have been stealing awakening people away from us for years now.”

That’s a scary thought. If they manage to not only snatch awakening people away from under your noses, but also keep them off of the Order’s radar both during and after awakening, they’re not to be trifled with.

You lay in the call. Up next is… “Milly, please tell me you have something for me.”

“I don’t sir. I’ve done several searches, but there’s nothing, other than the reports from London just now, and my sist- The Oculus is working on that already. Nothing I can do.”

She stays silent for a moment, and you’re about to decide whether to shut off the com or say something else when she talks again. “Sir, I’m scared. There’s nothing on these people. Nothing. That means they’ve evaded the Oculus’ attention for who knows how long. Years. Decades even perhaps.”

You’ve never heard her sound so vulnerable. She might be warming up to you after all.
