You may still change your game mode until the end of the event, if you wish. The current game modes available are:

Easy Mode : Flare just tells the tale of her last mission with the Bullseye Squad. There will only be basic interaction which involves the canonical events of her story.
Normal Mode : Play as Flare at the time of her last mission with the Bullseye Squad. There will be full interaction which involves the canonical events of her story.
Hard Mode : Play as one of the other members of Flare's team at the time of their last mission with the Bullseye Squad. This will require a secondary post for explanation and clarification.
AV*A(Y#$NHK! Mode : DEFY FATE

The characters currently available in Hard Mode are Deimos, the Demolitions Expert, and Ruth, the Heavy Gunner.

Oops. Forgot to add that link into the pastebin.

I swear I put it in the archives. Sorry, this week has been a mess of preparations for me.

From your cockpit, you could hear the distant sounds of battle. Things were starting to die down - not a good sign, since that meant that your team had to start wrapping it up, soon.

"What's taking them so long..." You growl to yourself, keeping your Frame at least partially hidden behind the corner of the laboratory. Thanks to the hillside surrounding the mission area, you were able to keep out of sight from most of the obvious viewpoints. Sure, there should be nothing to worry about, but that was what the enemy wanted you to think. They already took Skar, and the most recent explosion that made your mech shake was a little bit too close for comfort. The longer you guys were here, the more you were at risk of being captured. Or worse.

Curse it all, why did Skar have to try and play the hero? That old fool was always trying to harp on you people about how strategy and planning were only second to following orders! And then he goes off and tries to take on some random thing out of nowhere, getting himself killed in the process! He didn't even have the privilege to die with his comrades! Clicking your tongue in annoyance, you try to shake these errant thoughts away. There are better things you could be doing, right now.

If you can't shake these thoughts out of your head, you might as well push them to the back of your memory. For now, you start up the usual scouting software, leaning forward in the cockpit to take a better look of the empty field in front of the lab. Absolutely nothing. No turrets, no enemies coming up, nothing at all to worry about. It was actually kinda scary, now that you thought about it. Why wasn't anyone coming to get this? Even with a civil war going on, isn't this place a little too well-hidden to just be ignored? Was this really supposed to be going this smoothly?

You activate the comm radio. "Captain. No one on the radar, yet. It's a ghost town, here, sir." You say.

For a moment, static silence. Then, a response. "Just sit tight, Ruth. We've just found the bottom floor, and we're about to enter the - by the gods..." That was the last thing that the captain had said before his radio cut off. "Captain? CAPTAIN!? Damn it!" Try as you might, there was just no response from him.

Not a moment after this, two tiny blips pop up on your radar. Small figures appear at the very edge of the far hills. They're too small to be an Orbital Frame, but the speed at which they're moving is far too fast to be a normal vehicle. Some sort of recon drone that got lost, maybe? Or maybe this is the response team finally checking in? Either way, they haven't spotted you yet.

Your lasrifle is good and all, but it isn't effective over long range distances. You're going to have to wait until they close the gap, first. Crouching down a little lower, you can only hope that they are blind enough to not notice a Frame trying to conceal itself behind a wall.

As they approach, you start to get a better look at what you're facing. It seems that the objects in question are scouting droids. There aren't any weapons on them to speak of, but the huge camera lens at the very front of their spherical bodies is a clear indication of what they're there for. If that's their response to people breaking and entering, you are pretty sure that getting out of here is going to be easier than you thought.

You wait for just a few moments more. Not just yet...not just yet...now! Pouncing out of cover, you draw your rifle up and aim right at the closer droid's lens. Being caught by surprise, the droids aren't able to respond fast enough; you take out the closer droid's oculus with a well-timed shot. It's not enough to take down the droid, but, at the very least, you've blinded it.

The other droid turns and focuses on your Frame, and you step back behind cover before it can get a good look on you. Now that you've garnered their attention, whatever was controlling these things would probably come to chase after you guys, soon.

1/?
>>
>>39535227
There's still no response from the CO and the away team. The two droids are already starting to beep and flash out warning signs, so the enemy was sure to follow. Would taking the scout droids out really help, at this point? Maybe a different plan is in order...

Even as you try to shoot the droids down, you can already see something else coming in the distance. Whatever it is, a few hills put together seem to be less wide than its shoulders. Even as far away as it seems to be, the gigantic colossus at the horizon was clearly larger than any Orbital Frame that you've ever seen.

"Come on, come on, captain, where the FUCK are you!?" You repeatedly punch your thumb against the comm button while your other hand shoots down one drone. The second drone is nicked by a laser, but it only takes off a layer of outer protection. Not that it mattered anymore - you've already been spotted by the enemy, and the droid was already going back to the enemy to report.

After the tenth attempt, the CO finally breaks through! "Ruth! What the hell is going on, up there!? We hear your laser rifle going off!" He screams, his voice distorted by something. "In any case, we've got the package and we're coming up to you. Whatever is going on, just hold them off until the rest of the team can get to you!" The radio drops once again.

No ETA? No back up? You force your Frame to grip your rifle's metallic grip more firmly. Right now, the only way you could possibly buy them more time is if you draw the big Frame's attention. Other than that, the only other way you could do it is if you...

Normally, you'd be one of the first people to go head-on and fight the big bad. But normal circumstances involve you having a squad to fight alongside you, and a big bad that wasn't in a Frame that was as big as a fucking gravver-sized carrier ship! For now, you sprint out of cover and begin to climb the hill. There's no way you can fight that thing fairly!

The Colossus seems to catch wind of you, and it begins to march toward your direction. The sheer scale of the Frame is starting to dawn on you - it's as big as a small mountain! Standing at around thirty meters, the huge, hulking mass of screaming gears and hounding cogs seems to roar as it starts to head toward you. Well, technically, it's just the sounds of the metal plating being forced to move, but, still, the sound is there. Spurred on by this, you frantically climb up over the hill and look around.

You're in luck. The fighting around the area hadn't died out just yet, with both sides of the civil conflict engaging one another on a war-torn dust plain. There were around fifty Frames in total, colored in red or blue patterns and not even focusing on you. Perfect.

1/?
>>
>>39536327
Your pursuer was starting to get too close for comfort. Already, you could hear silo doors opening from the colossus' sides. Turning around, you fake a quick assault before diving down and jumping into the fray. Whistling missiles follow you down, lining an explosive trail of fire and dry dirt straight into the air.

The fifty Frames were not spared from the assault, and five mechs were blown to pieces right in front of you. The remaining forty five turn their attention to the colossus, and both sides seem to put aside their differences and focus all their fire against a shared enemy. Success!

Your comm is buzzing. Right now might not be the best time to answer it, but you're not entirely sure that you can get back to safety with that mountain-eater in the way.

All this sudden fighting and motion kicks up enough dust and dirt to start making dust clouds. The colossus is too tall to see into the thick clouds, while the normal-sized Frames are too shoddily built to have any sort of sensor that could work around this. You, however, are better than gravver scum. Your Frame comes with the industry-standard radars and sonars, and you've got a minimap that updates by echolocation and Short-Term Photo-Scanning. For you, it's as easy as flicking a switch and walking around the objects.

The colossus isn't budging from its spot, so it's able to see you once you spring out of cover. By the time it's able to make any sort of assault against your Frame, however, you're already jetting underneath its central chassis and sliding down the hill. It can't turn fast enough to keep you in forward sights, and the rear sights aren't in the right angle to catch your descent. In short, you've lost him.

You smile to yourself, stretching out your back as the rest of Bullseye Squad regroups in the laboratory's main lobby. "Good work, Ruth. You've got him distracted and we've got the package." says the CO happily. In his Frame's arms rests a strange, radiating package. It's covered completely in white. "I can't tell you what it is, but I can tell you that it's a signal jammer, as well as whatever our client wants it to be. If not for the protective case around it, this thing would have taken out communications in a thirty click radius around us. We've got to get this out of here and get back to the Iscar."

1/?
>>
>>39536761
"That's easier said than done, CO. We've got that fucking Titan-Class wanzer breathing down our clits, and those mudfuckers won't distract each other long enough to get us out of here. Besides, even if we could get out, this whole damn planet's too hot for the Iscar to get close. We'd have to get these shitheads cleared out before we can leave." The mechanic growls. She curses way too much for her health.

Still, she's got a point. If you don't find a way to get past that thing, you're not going to be able to leave the lab, let alone this planet.

Even without being able to see him, you can tell that the CO is stroking his beak with his weird feather-hands. After a while, he says, "Here's what we're going to do. Ruth, you've got the hardest job. I want you to go and distract the enemy while we're working. Don't do anything if he's still held up by the local military. Deimos - you go and set up a shell game. Use everything we've got to take him down. I'll help you set up for a bit, then I'll go scout out our escape route. Cuvic, try to link up with the Iscar."

"You got it, boss. After what happened down there, I feel like I could set up a Trust-Buster on this guy." said Deimos. He must be feeling quite proud of himself, if he's heading out first. You, the CO, and Cuvic set out to do your tasks, working as quickly as possible.

While you're keeping an eye on the hillside, you're able to watch Deimos get to work. The way he's setting up his trap, it's as if he's trying to make a game out of it; on each spot is a symbol, with lines and indentations in the ground to mark...something. "Hey, Ruth, check this out. That big thing has at least a foot of plating, right? So here's how I have the trap set up. He's gonna start at the - "

Your captain's voice cuts through whatever he's about to say. "Cut the chatter, Deimos. Looks like we've only got one way out that isn't filled with enemies, and it's down through a ditch. If we can't stall him out here, we'll use this as an escape route."
>>
>>39537242
"I'm still not getting jack shit from Central, CO. Signal should be strong as all hell, here, too. I don't know what the fuck's going on, but I think we might have been set up." The young mechanic chimes in. At least she's caught up, now.

The Colossus was starting to turn around. Even with all the firepower that the gravvers had put against it, the huge Frame didn't even look dented. There was, at best, only a token amount of damage near its center. You look to Deimos, who gives you a thumbs up. "Trap's ready when you are. Go ahead and play the bait." He calls out.

You don't think you can really get this thing's attention, even with lasers, but you hoist up your lasrifle and start pumping shots toward his head. They make direct hits against his hull, but the shots might as well have been sticks and stones. In response, the Colossus slowly begins to turn, arms swiveling to point right at your Frame.

Suddenly, the CO lets out a frustrated grunt. "Alright, I'm calling it here - we're running. Try to get that thing to go through Deimos' trap, but I'm not risking any more lives just to complete a mission." Wait, what!? He just thinks it's a good idea to just give up!? It was his idea to set up the trap to begin with!

If you can't even disable the Colossus, then you might as well just hand over the package right now and save yourselves the trouble. "No can do, captain. I'll make sure this thing won't be able to follow us any more." You say, still shooting up at your adversary.

"Same here, CO. You and the kid go and get the drinks ready on the Iscar. I've got a double date with this big beauty and our lovely gunner, over here. I mean, I did set the table and everything." Wow, Deimos was really on the ball, today. You're starting to think that the lughead might actually be a good guy, instead of some skeezy skinflint that just wants to play games all day.

From your radio, you hear strangled grunts and squawks of fury. The Captain was clearly not pleased with what was going on, but... "Fine. Cuvic, let's go. We'll find a good place to make camp and wait for evac."

By the time the Colossus was facing you, your two squadmates had already fucked off. Deimos had pulled out his twin-tube launcher and a single rocket. "So...got a plan?" He asks.

"Just one. Fuck him up." You respond.

Both of you dash-step back to avoid missiles and gunfire. The Colossus wasn't pulling back any punches to try and attack you, but it was far too slow to notice what was going on. You and Deimos distance yourself from the immediate danger, jumping back so that the makeshift minefield was between yourselves and your enemy. To draw its attention, both of you continued to fire for the approximate location of its cockpit - the very top of the central chassis, right in the middle. "Come on, come on..."

The Colossus took lumbering, five-yard-long steps to get toward you. It was so focused on just trying to hit your Frame with something that it didn't notice the faint click from underneath its right boot.

Explosion after explosion rocked its armored feet! The impact alone was enough to tear off the outer plating, but the simultaneous explosions ensured that you had a clear view of exposed exoskeleton and open wiring! It didn't stop there, though - Deimos seemed to have planned around where the Colossus would fall, as well. As it began to tumble to its knees, more explosions were triggered. The knee plate was blown apart, then the thigh guards, then the lower central chassis - when all was said and done, the entire lower half of the Colossus was exposed!

It was on its knees, now. Deimos loaded an RPG into his dual tubes. "Ruth, what's the play? We gonna get out of here or are we gonna rip this thing a new one?"

"Let's get up close! He's on his knees; let's keep it that way!" You roar out, pushing forward toward the downed Frame. With a dark chuckle, Deimos approaches the Frame from the other side.

The Colossus begins to push itself back up, swiping at both of your frames with wide, arcing palms. You try to duck down to dodge it, but his hands are too long; the top of your frame is clipped, sending you down to the ground and damaging your top sensors. Deimos was slammed into the dirt even more forcefully, and his Frame's left arm distends in a sickening crunch.

You're not about to just let this slide. Before the Colossus can get up properly, you leap onto its back legs and put away your rifle. Unlike Deimos, who needs dual pile bunkers to engage in close quarters combat, all your Frame needs is a trusty, High-Frequency Combat Knife. You unsheathe the blade from between your Frame's legs, gripping it tightly and stabbing repeatedly into the open skeleton. You keep on doing this as you climb upward, right up until you're hanging onto the small of the big Frame's back.

1/?
>>
>>39538673
Deimos is forced to pull back to assess the damage to his arm. "Ruth, you crazy bitch, don't ride the damn bull! Get out of there!" He yells out at you. As sensible as that would be to do, there doesn't seem to be as many rear-mounted weapons on this thing as there are on the front or the sides. Looks like the Colossus counts on the enemy being up in the front for it to be useful. If you want to do damage, you'll have to fight from here. Besides, your sensors are bugging out, and if you get away from him now, you're not sure that you can get back on as easily as the first time.

Your opponent has suffered significant damage, so far. Even if it wanted to fight you, the fact that you and Deimos damaged its lower half that much is going to make it hard for the Colossus to move. You jump down from the Colossus, running back to the damaged demolitions deployer while the crippled Colossus careens away.

In this engagement, both sides aren't looking too hot. Deimos' Frame has a crushed left arm and busted pistons, while you're forced to rely on ocular sight instead of any AI-assisted cameras. The two of you don't seem to be crippled in any other way, but even minor things like this are enough to be a hindrance, against an enemy that is so large. On the other side of the token, the enemy's lower half is halfway to breaking point, and you still have your High Frequency Combat Knife in hand. Deimos also has a pile bunker that could wreak havoc on the enemy's back, too.

"Ruth, I've got an idea. I'm in the more lumbering Frame, but I can still outpace this guy. I'll keep him busy from the front. If you can get in there and take out his leg suspension coils, he'll be toppled. You're faster, so you can react better if he starts playing around with you from there. Sounds good?" Deimos asks.

>Sure. Sounds good. (Please roll 3d100 for attacking, evasion, and climbing.)

"Well, you're good with this kind of thing. Let's do it." You say, holding your right hand out for his left one to fist-bump.

The realization of such an action dawns on you just before he starts to run around in front of the limping giant of a Frame, and you discreetly hold your knife out and run to the Colossus' back. Even the most untrained of pilots can see where this is going, but the Colossus has no other choice but to stay on the demoman while you try to climb up his back. Each footstep that the enemy Frame takes forces you backwards, and it's deliberately lifting its legs up high enough to crush anything that is standing below it. You, however, remain undaunted.

Just as one foot stomps down, you jump up, clinging onto the Colossus by the back of its shin. You brandish your knife tightly and start slashing into the big mech with quick, decisive cuts, not caring whether or not you were hitting the suspension or not. The more you cut, the less resistance your blade met, until, with crackling lightning and grinding metal, the enemy's leg begins to fold in on itself.

W...what did I do?
>>
>>39539290
You jump off just in time to avoid the Colossus' backward tumble. It struggled to stay upright, but such a large, heavy construct could never support itself with one leg alone. It fell back with a loud crash, forcing a deep imprint into the earth.

"Wait!" A voice calls out. It seemed to be coming from the Colossus. "Parlay! Parlay! You've taken me down, and I now ask to be treated as a POW!" Wait...what?

>P-parley? Well, it is already downed. Whoever is piloting it seems to know that it can't fight on one leg. (No rolls, just yet.)

That's as much a trap as you've ever heard. "Yeah, he won't be getting up any time soon. Let's get the hell out of here, fat man." You spit out, and you turn around to leave.

Just as you turn your back to him, a strong force pushes against the back of your Frame, followed by a blast of fire! You're propelled forward before slamming into the dirt, sliding for a few feet before coming to rest. Deimos lets out a loud howl of pain; you turn around just in time to see his Frame tossed around like a limp rag. He hits the dirt less gracefully than you did, and his cockpit even starts to bend a bit. "Gyaaaugh!"

Shit shit shit SHIT! Without even thinking, you scramble up to your feet and haul ass to his Frame. It's definitely not looking good - the back panel must have been hit, since most of the damage seems to be at the front of the mech. As you previously saw, the cockpit's been dented, but the damage was worse than you were expecting. It won't come open easily, and he's sure to have been pierced by something. "Deimos, you alright!?"

"Grkh - I got a damn control stick shoved in my - my ribs! It's not looking good! Everything's red on my panel, Ruth! I can't move jack shit!"

Instead of replying to him, you grab the phallic cockpit of his Frame with both hands and pull it apart from its central chassis. He lets out a loud yell, but your hold on the cockpit is gentle enough to not cause him too much pain. Even though you know he can't hear you anymore, something in your heart forces you to speak. "Fuck that. Fuck that and fuck you. I'm not about to lose another friend to these fuckers. I'm not about to let people die just because we weren't smart enough to see through a clear trap. We're going to get out of this, fat man! We're going to get the fuck out of here and we're going to LIVE, damn it! And when we get our shit together, we'll find the CO and the little brat! We'll find out who did this and we'll make them pay!"

Your speech is made all the more dramatic by the missiles blowing up all around you. Cradling the cockpit to your Frame's chest, you sprint away from the Colossus, running into the hills surrounding the laboratory. In your fearful state, you forget about what the CO said. You've forgotten about where they wanted to regroup, or even making radio contact with them. You don't know how the other squad members are doing or if they're even alive. Your only concern is to get Deimos to safety.

You slip into the planet's civil war, hiding yourselves in the midst of battle. When your Frame can't handle its damage anymore, you use one final push of juice to rip Deimos out of his cockpit.

>>39539975
He's definitely injured, but the trench-coat-wearing fat man is going to be fine. He coughs up a bit of blood, then looks at you. "Well...that was a bust. I knew I shouldn't have gone all in. What now?"

"I don't know. But what I do know is that we're going to hide, for now. Lay low, blend in, pretend that we're just injured foreigners. When we get you patched up, we'll find the rest of the team. After that..."

"...we're getting even."

Are you saying I should lengthen my sessions, then? I'd like to, but I've already got a DnD game that I'm working on. I'm not very good with this sort of thing to begin with, so juggling two...

Well, we'll see. I'm starting to feel like Liu Bei, at times - while I want to remain virtuous and not be a vain piece of shit, I also understand that popularity is somewhat related to how good you are at running a quest. I want to be good, anon. I want to be good.

I didn't mean longer sessions, I meant as you keep on running, eventually more people will hop in. longer threads can help in getting new guys though.

late to the party here, but could we have used the package to shut down the colossus? if it can't communicate with it's own subsystems, it'd be pretty fucked.
