You drink what's left of your water bottle and half-mindedly wonder if you could cook up a steak on the tank's armour. Then you remember that there aren't any steaks out here in the desert, so it's a moot point.

"How are we on supplies?" You ask.

"The first aid supplies are sealed tight and hygienic," Nina says. "We'll be fine as long as we don't have to deal with any abnormal injuries. Like getting shot in the heart."

"Let it go, Nina," you say. "That's old news. What about the tank?"

"The tank is in working order," Danielle says. "Getting enough ammunitions is a little difficult, but it shouldn't pose a major problem so long as we operate in a defensive capacity."

"Excellent," you say. "Vanessa, do you have the latest maps?"

"I got copies as soon as General Gunther released them." Vanessa holds up a stack of papers. "We'll be good for at least two or three days unless the Imperials have major movements planned."

You take a look at your watch. You have a briefing with General Gunther in two hours, which gives you plenty of time to get ready. Your basic supplies are sorted out, but it's been a while since your last training session and Gaul might have some high-quality equipment for you.

"Let's do some basic training first," you say. "We'll take care of the shopping afterwards."

You gather your team around and review your last few missions. Danielle and Karl, as your direct subordinates, occasionally chime in with their own thoughts about desert combat and the role of tanks in the war. You've been lucky so far, but deserts can be tricky and you don't want to take any chances. Your luck might dry out and leave you stranded in the middle of a sandstorm with bullets flying left and right.

Range boost covers firing range, scouting and spotting hidden targets.

Defense boost will also retroactively add +2 to the tank's defense and gets hit and damaged.

You finish your training session and go looking for Gaul's store. He's in business as always, despite how hard it is to get decent supplies out this far.

"Hello, Captain," Gaul says. "What can I get you today?"

"We're here strictly for business," you say. "Do you have anything that'll give us an advantage over the Imperials?"

"Oh, I have a few things here and there," he says. "Have a look."

"As always, it's a pleasure doing business with you," Gaul says. "Good luck on your next job. Be sure to get yourself a nice pay bonus for me."

"I'll think of you every time I put a bullet through someone's skull," you say. "Just make sure we get the supplies quick. We'll be leaving soon."

"I'll take care of it right away," Gaul says.

"Thanks," you say. "Everyone, wait for me by the tank. I need to meet with the general."

"Yes, sir!"

You return your squad's salute and go to the general's tent. You arrive just as his team of adjutants and advisors is leaving.

"Captain Renard de Velde reporting for duty, General." You snap to attention and salute.

"At ease, captain," General Gunther says. "We don't have much time, so we'll have to keep this brief. We believe we've found the location of the Imperial headquarters in the Barious. The 33rd will be launching an offensive tomorrow, and they've asked for our support."

"What can I do to help, sir?"

"Our immediate priority is to weaken the Imperials' defenses," General Gunther says. "We have three missions that need to be accomplished. You can directly attack the Imperial trenches and give us a foothold."

You're not sure you want to get back into the trenches, not after what happened a few days ago.

"What are our other options, sir?"

"We also located an Imperial mortar position and a supply depot," General Gunther says. "The mortar position needs to be dealt with, or else our attack will suffer from significant losses. Of course, the team that attacks them will have to deal with the mortar strikes instead. The supply depot is lower priority, but it will disrupt their supply lines. That might give us an advantage."

"We'll deal with the Imperial mortars," you say. "Do we have any details on their forces?"

"They're primarily engineers, but they have a few scouts for spotting and some shocktroopers for additional protection," General Gunther. "We've mostly left them alone for now since they're a little too far from the trenches to threaten us, so they shouldn't be too heavily protected."

You nod slowly.

"I'll deal with it to the best of my ability," you say.

"In that case, you're dismissed, captain. Make sure this mission gets done."

"Yes, sir."

You return to your squad, which is currently gathered around your tank.

"Welcome back," Jetje says. "What's our assignment this time?"

"We're hitting Imperial mortars," you say. "They're not a threat to our trenches, but there's going to be an offensive tomorrow and they're in the way."

Your squad looks less than pleased at the news, aside from Roberta, who doesn't seem to care, and William, who has a shit-eating grin on his face. The man loves his explosions.

"I guess someone needs to take care of it," Jetje says. "What's our plan?"

Assuming the general's intelligence is correct, the Imperials won't be able to stand up to a direct assault. You could just charge in with the tank and finish them off as fast as possible.

You also have the option of going in quiet. If you can assassinate some of the engineers in charge of the mortars, it'll make your job easier.

You could also go for a mortar duel. You can bring your own mortar team to bombard the Imperials, while you and Vanessa spot targets.

"We'll start by going in quiet," you say. "If I can take out one of the engineers, it'll make things easier for us. Anyway, let's get going."

You ride the tank most of the way there. You need to cover it with towels and rags so the hot armour doesn't burn your skin. It wouldn't be a serious wound, but it would affect your combat ability and you can't afford that right now.

The mortar position is located on top of a hill and it has a good view of the surrounding area, but Kreuss is able to guide the tank through the nearby ruins and hide your approach.

Moeller carefully parks the tank behind a ruined wall and the rest of your squad gets off.

"Kreuss, we're going in first," you say. "The rest of you, move in as soon as you hear gun fire. We'll make sure you don't get blown up on your way there." You turn to Kreuss. "Ready?"

"Yes, sir." She nods.

You get on the ground and cover yourself with sand. After that, you crawl closer and closer to the Imperial mortar position.

As the general said, they don't have much, just a two shocktroopers, two scouts and two engineers on the mortars. They must have had things easy so far, but their complacency is about to get them kill.

You cover your scope with your hands a bit so the light doesn't glare off of it and focus on the two engineers. It looks like one of them is next to a crate of standard explosives, while the other has incendiary charges.

>Take out the engineer in charge of the standard explosives. You don't want to deal with shrapnel.

You aim at the engineer in charge of the incendiaries. Normal explosives are more dangerous than most guns, but they're still fairly easy to deal with. Fire is something else altogether.

You press the trigger and fire. Your shot echoes across the desert and the engineer clutches at his chest. He falls over and twitches while grasping helplessly for help. The wound isn't immediately fatal, but he won't survive.

However, this puts the other Imperial soldiers on alert and they turn towards you, ready for battle. More worrying is the second engineer, who's getting his mortars ready. You don't have time to snipe him, but you might be able to give him a scare.

You fire a random shot at the remaining engineer, hoping to at least distract him before he can bomb your charging squad.

Unfortunately for him, you hit him in the hip just as he's done readying the mortar strike. He loses his balance and falls over on top of the mortar, which promptly explodes. The engineer's shredded corpse is launched in the air as the rest of the Imperials look on in horror.

Moeller's tank rolls in next to you to provide cover, while Schreiner and Leifstel cover Kreuss. Garcia stays with the fencers, while Stroheim and Nelson join you.

"Captain, what are your orders?" Schreiner asks.

The main threat has been eliminated, but you still need to deal with two shocktroopers and two scouts.

"Get rid of the shocktroopers first!" You yell. "The machine guns are the biggest problem now!"

Garcia, Kreuss, Leifstel and Schreiner all move forward while firing, using fencers' shield as cover. You likewise move alongside the tank and Moeller sends her gunner up to take care of the machine gun turret.

The Imperial shocktroopers stand no chance. Their bullets ping ineffectually against the shields and the tanks, and they have no cover behind which to protect themselves. The sand turns into bloody mud beneath their corpses.

The Imperial scouts quickly realize that the situation isn't much better for them. They hit the ground to limit their profile and calmly wait for their shot. They don't have much of a choice. They'll just get shot in the back if they try to run away.

A prone position provides excellent cover against bullets, but it is very, very bad at dealing against close-quarter combat.

"Leifstel! Schreiner! Charge those scouts!"

The two fencers charge forward with a loud battlecry, holding their shields up to protect themselves and to provide cover for Garcia and Kreuss. The scouts get off a few shots, but their rifles aren't designed to penetrate the fencers' shields.

Leifstel reaches her target first. She brings her sword down, using the momentum of her charge to throw more power behind the attack. The terrified scouts tries to roll out of the way, but his efforts only get him disembowelled.

Schreiner's strike is somewhat cleaner. He uses his leg to keep the Imperial pinned downed and simply stabs him the heart.

"Excellent work you two," you say. "Let's secure the area."

You don't find anything else around. The Imperials had a map, but it isn't marked. You're about to return when Kreuss calls out to you.

"Sir! There's a convoy incoming!"

You look in the direction she's pointing. There's about half a dozen trucks coming your way, all loaded with shocktroopers and fencers. There are far more troops than you can handle. Fortunately, it doesn't look like they have any engineers with them, so they can't replace the mortar team, at least not immediately.

Your eyes turn to the crate of explosives.

"It'd be a waste to just leave these here," you say. "Nelson, load up a round of explosives. I'll handle the spotting."

"Oh, yes, sir!"

Nelson gleefully prepares a round of explosive mortars while you give him directions about the angle and distance of the incoming convoy. Even if they can't just replace the mortars, weakening the Imperials further can only help you and the confusion of losing a whole convoy might crack the Imperials' defense.

"Ready, Nelson?" You ask.

"Yes, sir!"

"Fire!"

The mortar arcs towards the convoy and explodes right above it. Plumes of white smoke trail behind dozens of blue-white flames. You have just a second to see the effects of the mortar before the convoy is completely covered in smoke.

The flames burn through clothes and flesh and go straight for the bone. The soldiers you can see desperately try to cover themselves. It doesn't help.

Even from this distance, you can hear the screams. They only end when the trucks explode. You can't really tell why. The ragnite in engines probably overheated and exploded.

Nelson smiles and gives you two thumbs up.

"Excellent job, Nelson," you say. "Let's get going. We have a busy day tomorrow."
>>
>>39517551
And that's all for today. Fortunately, there aren't any civilians in the desert, so you don't have to worry about giving a white phosphorous shower to dozens of innocent refugees.
