Your sword seems a little alarmed that you've laid her down, but you reassure her: this is how your mentor intends to test you, so insisting on changing the rules of the test would just complicate things.

“Watch from a safe distance, little bee. I don't want you within a hundred meters of us when we start," Yoruichi orders her pint-sized bodyguard.

Urahara rises to his feet, dashing in to throw an indignant Suì Fēng over his shoulder like a sack of rice. “If a 'safe distance' even exists, that is. I'll take care of her, so you don't have to hold back.”

“Thank you, Kisuke,” she replies.

She moves... my god can she ever move! You lose track of her completely for a moment as she attacks, and barely manage to move your right arm to deflect the lunging punch right into position for your left hand to wrap her wrist with the cord: a trick you learned from Matsubara one afternoon after a sparring session. You can see a brief flicker of surprise in her eyes as you pull her down by her wrist, only to have her knee slam into your right elbow.

The weight of the blow is simply massive, and Yoruichi's momentum rolls both of you to the side as one of her hidden knives slices through the cords around her wrists. The two of you land on your feet again, with Yoruichi having gained some distance after the seconds-long exchange.

“Where'd you learn hohōjutsu?” Yoruichi muses as the severed cord falls to the ground. “The Shinsengumi?”

You nod, stretching your limbs carefully to ensure you weren't too badly hurt just now. “Yeah, one of their captains. Sad to see it didn't amount to much.”

“There's a kidō trick I'll have Kisuke show you later that'll work better than your sageo,” Yoruichi replies, glancing down at the cord thoughtfully. “Since I used my sword, I'll let you do the same from here if you want.”

Wait... so those knives are created by her Zanpakuto? So that's how she can draw them seemingly from 'nowhere'. She's not actually drawing them at all: her sword is producing them when and where they're required. The result is that she never looks like she's carrying her sword at all. Hell, it could be stored back at her family mansion for all you know and it could still be doing its job.

It's almost embarrassing that after all these years you never considered to ask where she kept hiding those blades.

“I see,” you mutter. “So that's how it works.”

Yoruichi nods. “So you figured it out... good job.”

“Let's stick to our fists,” you suggest. “After all that's the whole point, right? See how good I punch now?”

“Your call,” your mentor replies as her body eases back into a guarded stance. Looking her over you can't see a drop of sweat on her dusky skin, and there aren't even any markings from where you slung her around by her wrist. She's still in absolutely peak condition, whereas you... your arm's aching a little from that knee strike you blocked.

She's good at this. Really good.

Your hirenkyaku carries you to within striking distance in an instant, and you take a wide swing with your left arm aimed at Yoruichi's temple. She ducks under your arm and throws a right hook at your exposed ribs, which you catch in your right hand. Even as your left arm comes down her leg lashes out at you, knocking you clear and slamming you into a rock outcropping. She's fast, and decisive... but she's no fool. Even when you led her into a trap she had a plan to get out of it.

From your back you can hear Yoruichi laugh. “C'mon, Riku. Quit lounging around!”

Her fist shatters the stone where you'd been laying a split second before, sending up a thousand shards of stone and a great pall of dust from the force of the impact. As you're pelted by bits of rubble, you realize that she's holding back still. Not by much, but these are all straight attacks with the bare minimum force. She's yet to use an advanced technique.

“You're starting to remind me of Kisuke,” she quips. “Come ON, fight back!”

Suddenly spinning in place you dash back towards Yoruichi as she pursues you, and your right fists collide with absolutely massive force. Unable to stop you careen wildly towards each other, arms bending as you exchange an equally ridiculous pair of elbow strikes. This is followed by a pair of mirrored headbutts, every bit as powerful as the previous two blows.

Then the two images disappear, the Utsusemi techniques that spawned your respective doppelgangers having faded.

“That was awesome,” you chuckle quietly as Yoruichi grins at you from atop a large boulder.

“I think Kisuke's taken little bee outside,” she replies. “I can finally show you what you came here for, if you'd like. I think you're ready.”

“Why?” you ask, honestly too taken aback by the spectacle in front of you to even question the rest of her words beyond that.

“It takes immense power, skill, and control across multiple styles of combat, which you have. More than that it takes equal measures of determination and compassion to really get a handle on it, and to know when it's okay to use it. I think you've got that too now.”

Yoruichi stretches her fingers before curling them into fists. Her energy is so focused despite its appearance. “If you get hit with this... you might die, Riku. I wouldn't blame you if you wanted to back out, or take time to prepare yourself.”
