There's an amazing feat of dexterity in watching mom lay out all the food she gathered to cook. You'd expect her to have trouble manipulating everything considering her hug size. Tough when you remember how she managed to sneak up on you last night you realize that handling slabs of meat and spices is probably a menial task compared to silent movement.

While Mom cooks Kuru takes you and the siblings aside and shows you how to clean up. Apparently you're getting to a size where just rubbing your mitts together isn't enough to clean off all the dirt, and since you and your siblings still spend about half your time moving quadrepedally you tend to gather a lot of grime. By the time she's done teaching you the first bits of food are finished and you adjourn to eat.

As food is devoured you split time with your brother telling about your adventure to find Mom. The others apparently haven't heard most of this yet and are avid listeners. Then, not to be outdone, they tell about the hunting trip they took with mom. Apparently she ran into a massive fuzzy animal that was braver than it was smart, and mom killed it by puffing her breath in its face. That animal actually makes up Mom's dinner and when you ask she says you can't have any because it'd be dangerous for you to eat it. That's very slightly unfair.

Wrapping up lunch/dinner you consider what to do with yourself for the rest of the day.

You watch as mom continues to crunch idly on a half baked gator tail. This can't possibly be enough to fill her stomach but she hasn't done much besides sit around all day so maybe she's not particularly hungry. Still you do wonder a couple things.

"How do you gets big?" you ask.

Mom looks at you and seems to consider the question for a bit before shrugging and answering in her signature whisper. "I don't knows. I am just big. I eat a lot, and get in fights, and get older, and I keep getting bigger." She looks at Kuru. "She is almost the same age as me, and yet she isn't big. It depends on the lizard. My brothers are smaller than me, but they can do different things than I can't."

You nod. That makes some sense. Still you hope you end up big like mom. Though you do have other problems to look into.

"Auntie and Kuru thinks that a witch might help me with my glow. Can we go there?"

A surprised look crosses mom's face and she gives a considering look before nodding. The idea apparently not having occurred to her. "That might work. We can go theres someday soon and... work something out." Something about the way Mom said that tells you that she's used to getting what she wants. Kuru put her head in her hands so she probably has a better idea about what mom meant, though she doesn't like what she heard.

"I'm fine," she says waving a hand, "I just remembered something I forgot that was kind of embarassing." She looks at your mother. "Should I take Sunniva to the witch? She knows me, and you can find something for the others to do in the meantime."

Mom shrugs and nods. "As long as it gets done."

You're bored now. "Can I go hunt birds?"

"Are you still hungry?" mom asks looking surprised.

You shake you head in the negative. You're actually pretty full. You ate nearly an entire goose yourself. You're pretty sure much more and you wouldn't be able to move.

"So why do you want to hunt birds?" Kuru adds in.

There are so many reasons you could say for this. Birds are assholes. Birds keep getting in your way. Birds messed with your siblings. So many reasons.

"Birds suck," you say concisely. That basically covers your feelings.

Mom and Kuru appear to have no response to that.

"Also more for later," you add belatedly.

That appears to be all the needed. Mom moves her tail out of the way of the door and you get going.

"Don't goes too far," Kuru calls out, and you turn and see her listening to mom before yelling again, "And if you have any problems just call out."

You head out into the swamp. There's gotta be a bird out here somewhere.

The swamp is fairly boring this evening. What birds there are seem to fly away on sight of you. You'd like to imagine this is because they know what's coming for them but they're probably just being normal birds.

After about half an hour you are despairing for birds to murder when you hear a sound.

"Cluck."

You turn. That sounded like a chicken. You make your way silently around a copse of trees and spot it. A herd, is it a herd? A flock of chickens. There are one or two small roosters moving around in the group as the mill about on the ground. Oh this will be sweet.

"Bruh cawk!" You spin around and find a larger rooster staring down at you from a low branch in the tree you just passed. It's neck feather puff out and it struts back and forth on the branch. Then it lowers its head and lets out a rapid series of clucks that sound almost like a gobble.

Black white checkered feathers. Flashing black spurs. and that horrible clucking. You hurt and you're bleeding.

You snap back to the present and shake off the memories. This isn't the same bird. This one is a regular colored wild rooster, though it's feathers are a more bloody red than orangish yellow. ANd it's crop and waddle are both engorged and red with blood as the bird clucks at you. It's also bigger, but that doesn't matter. You're a bird murdering machine.

The bird warbles again and it jumps from the branch to attack. You hear the flock of chickens behind you scatters.

You pitch left and roll out of the way, watching the rooster slide past you as it hits the ground and digs a deep furrow into the earth. You get your claws under you and arrest your own slide and leap for the birds back.

Midleap you watch the bird turn faster than you'd have thought it capable and leap again. Its spurs missing you but colliding with you all the same and you mentally prepare to tangle with the rooster at close quarters. It's just a bird and you've got arms with claws on them and a mouth full of teeth. You'll have the advantage. The expected tussle as you both fall never occurs. Instead you find yourself bodily thrown away from the bird as it hits you with a force that exceeds expectations again.

You grind to a halt and give the rooster another appraisal. The birds bright red wattle and draws your eye again and you see the way it nearly seems to glow. As the bird turns and lowers its head toward you, neck feathers flaring you notice for the first time that the bird's pupil-less eyes are as red as blood themselves.

If we kill this rooster, we should take his spurs and make some sweet elbow spikes for ourselves. Or maybe forearm blade/spikes. I think the sizes would match up properly and rooster spurs ain't no joke. They're hard and sharp.
>>
>>39473814
That's not a bad idea. I can definitely get down with that.
>>
>>39473710
You circle with the rooster. Stepping in and then back out trying to tempt an attack. Finally the bird take the bait and leaps at you spurs out. Backsliding you dodge the attack before leaping at the bird yourself. Claws meet featherless flesh on the rooster's face and you dig in as hard as you can. The skin is surprisingly tough, but without feathers to guard it tears under your attack. You rake the bird and immediately step clear as it grabs at you with those spurs again.

The bird's attack finds only air and you step further out of reach to gauge the damage. Vicious cuts scar the rooster's face and neck. You narrowly missed one of its eyes, and a trickle of blood threatens to blind it instead. Actually, you realize, the trickle is suspicious. From what the lizard you met on the way to Mom told you, a cut on the head of most creatures should bleed pretty heavily. The rooster doesn't seem to bleed much at all, despite the cuts.

Yourself you still feel ready to fight. The bump that knocked you away earlier didn't do any real damage, and the medicine Kuru put on your burns still leaves them fairly numb, though as you roll around they start to flare up again.

Feathers fly as the bird jumps at you again, seemingly ignoring what you did to its head, falling well short but forcing you to backstep to keep ground between you. You slash at the bird as it passes and strike feathers, but remind it you're not helpless. The pair of you settle into another round of low circling around each other.

You press whatever advantage you've gained and throw yourself at the rooster. Claws and teeth meet feathers as the pair of you meet and the bird somehow resists your weight slamming into it and keeps its feet. You slash at it and feel your claws penetrate deep enough in the feathery mass to find flesh, before disengaging to avoid a pointed reprisal from the rooster.

Again you notice that the birds injuries don't seem to bleed properly. In fact the cuts around its face appear to have been sealed over already by a black crust that surrounds the entire area around the wound. The bird clucks at you again and you feel your heart start pumping faster as the bird's eyes glow and its body swells slightly, growing larger.

You're really getting the impression this isn't a normal rooster

This bird doesn't know who it's messing with, but if it's a magic contest it wants, it'll get it. You reach back to the well of power you tapped this morning and find it has refilled to a point beyond where it was this morning, almost overflowing now, and churned up and murky as before. You try to tap it.

Your skin glows and you feel the power come alive as it flows out of you. A burning corona begins to form around you and you pick up the smell of grilling lizard and you skin tingles. That's not a great thing.

You charge the rooster and this time the two of you go tumbling as you hit it above it's center of weight. There's a violent tumble and you two thrash at each other as you roll around on the ground, your firey aura now trying to burn the bird as much as it burns you. The chicken's spurs dig into you in kind though and you feel your blood start to flow for a moment before the fire sears the cuts closed again.

The rolling ball finishes and you see the birds spurs have gotten longer and tinged with reddish brown material on the new length. The two of you are still much the worse for wear. The bird's feathers are singed in many places and you think you've burned half of its face. But you've got more fire sealed holes in you than your average healer would recommend having.

You're on fire!

You mentally take hold of you magic flow and try to kick it into a better shape. You feel like you almost had it but at the last moment the flow slips your control. You see the chicken rearing up for another shot at you and you try and condense the flow into something you can throw.

This time the power works with you and you feel your burning aura condense in lines across your body. The burning lines swell and you feel a pressure build until it explodes out. Spears of burning light crash into the swamp around you at random and burning random patterns into the ground and trees.

The roost catches this at the last second and manages to barely avoid line that sweeps past it, except the tip of its tail which is seared cleanly through and catches flame. It's attack aborted you have another moment to act

That worked. That worked! The rooster is relatively unhurt but you can fix that. You try to force the magic into doing that again. It fights you a bit but then settles into the pattern more comfortably. You subtly try and direct the lines of flame this time. Cutting them across the front of your body and exposing those surfaces to the chicken. They compress and explode out as the strings of angry sun.

The rooster sees again and tries to dodge but finds its previous evasion buried its feet too deep into muck for quick movement. Line after line of flame lashes into the bird, and you can smell burning feathers and chicken flesh now, alongside the smell of burning lizard.

Your power runs out with a woomph as air displaces the burning spots you were carbing around you and you feel a harsh wind blow over your skin, teasing you skin with pain and, thankfully, snuffing out the flames all over you.

You look at the blackened lines cut in the ground where the rooster used to be. Stupid ass thought his magic could beat yours. Hah. Woah, the world is spinning... The ground is kind enough to rise up and grab you before you can fall down. You pass out anyway.

He followed the fire. He hadn't eaten in days. All the food he tried to catch ran off. Everytime he stopped long enough to try and dig into a nest of something or other something large would show up and he'd have to flee. Worst he was pretty sure he'd never catch up at the rate he was going. There was no chance he was going the wrong way. He was smart enough to know that.

He was also smart enough to know that they didn't think he was strong enough to help. He's show them. He would catch up to them, and send them back. Then he'd finish the mission.

But for now there was fire ahead of him. And sometimes fire meant food. He'd run into some other lizards that had had fires with food. They'd wanted something for their food though. The second time he snuck off then came back and took food after they fell asleep. That was yesterday. Now he was hungry again.

The fire went out, but there was still smoke. Maybe it was just smaller. He thought to himself as he mounted a small rise. A feathery body lay in front of him. a line of fire cut across it, its flesh seared. Food!

He waited only a second before digging in. The feathery bird was large and he couldn't eat all of it. But that just meant there was enough to soothe the worrying pit in his stomach. He ate quickly, before the thing that followed could catch up he had to be moving again.
[1/2]
>>
>>39476161
[2/2]

Whatever he didn't eat he did his best to pack, then lacking anything to pack it in he carried it in his arms. Only then did he notice the other feathered bodies lying nearby. Each lying on or under a line of burnt ground or tree. At center of the pattern of fire though he found something odd.

It was his sister, the one that thought he was stupid. He felt a spark of hope light in him. He'd finally caught up! Clearly she'd bitten off more than she could chew and their brother had been forced to leave her.

He considered that maybe he'd have to leave her too. He could barely manage carrying the food he had anyway. He couldn't carry her too.

He can't just leave her here. His Mom might get angry. Kuru said moms have ways of knowing things their kids did. She also said it wasn't magic but it's pretty obvious it has to be magic. If she were here he'd see her. Stupid Kuru.

He spends a couple minutes trying to find a way to juggle his sister and his food. Their brother must have taken her bag. A bag would be really useful about now actually. He fails to notice the shadow appearing over him as he works to balance the two loads.

The human was relieved. He'd followed this lizard across most of the swamp. It'd been decided he'd hunt it by his elders, so he had to. He called out to let the others know where he was and stepped on the lizard's tail so it could not run.

The lizard panicked. He'd waited too long and now this thing had caught up with him.

The human pulls a stone knife from his belt and spins it around. The lizard isn't really a great trophy but it managed to illude him for some time. And the lizards of the swamp are known to be crafty and worthy opponents. It's a good start.

The lizard struggles to free his tail and panics at the sight of the knife. Weapons aren't terribly familiar to him but the creature was already bigger than him. It's clear that its intentions aren't good. The mammal bends and the lizard prepares to claw the hell out of it if it gets closer, slipping as far onto his back as he can to bring all claws into play.

A meaty sound fills the burnt out patch of swamp and the body falls down limp. The lizard looks at the mammal's now cooling corpse, the cooling assisted by a chunk of ice lodged in its head. He follows the line of rime the ice chunk drew across the swamp and sees a lizard covred in decorations with a silly looking frog hat step into sight. Oh that's dad.

Relief and frustration fills him. Dad must have started following him as soon as he left in order to catch up. Now he'll no doubt try and take him back. But still, he did save him from the human.

Mahli is pleased. Not only did he find the errant child, apparently another one had snuck away. He couldn't really be sure which one the extra was. They all looked the same to him, it was sad to say. It wasn't that he didn't care, but he just had never been able to tell children apart until they got older.

Still there'd be no doubt that Kasha would forgive him if he returned with them. Then Kasha could explain to Wasem what happened. Wasem did not like Kasha but he'd understand Mahli's position and only hold it a little bit against him for failling to come to prayers. In all the situation was much better than he could have hoped. If the child had died in some part of the swamp he'd be virtually exiled from the swamp, Kasha is well connected and would be sure that he'd be run out of anywhere he tried to rest until his impossible task was completed.

His exultations were cut short as more sounds in the swamp preceded the appearance of another half dozen humans. They were dressed like the first. Crude hides and leathers marking them as feral humans from the mountains that bordered the forest, the sea, and the plains. There appearance was odd. Their usual holdings too far away to come to the swamp, much less this far into it.

But that thought would have to wait.

Magic fills Mahli as he pulls the power in through his staff. There's a strange instability as he pulls it in, like it's pulling back for some reason but the staff makes the difference he fills with power. A mental twist and he is prepared to cast. The staff turns in his hands and a small amount of ice starts to spin up in front of its tip. The humans see this and roar an order to charge. The ice spins and a piece splits off perpendicular to the main mass, then another. Finally six pieces of ice whorl around a central point. It looks a lot like

"Ice Flowers," Mahli says, finishing the spell. The petals of the flower explode away and arc toward the humans. The spell is a good one. Not good for very large armored creatures or the very agile, but these humans seem to be neither. If he was better he'd make the petals faster, make multiple flowers, but at the moment this is his limit.

The petals fly true and four find their marks before the humans can react. The fifth twists enough to take his on the shoulder, the sixth, a larger human, actually swipes the petal out of the air with a real metal sword.

Worrisome, but they're challenging a magician in his element and the unwilling father. More magic pulls in, that interference still present but not enough to stop his casting. This time the magic is poured into the water of the swamp. The water level rises and mixes instantly.

"Water sink," Mahli intones. The humans are surprised when suddenly the mud under them becomes a couple feet deeper and they've sunk up to their knees in it.

Another spell and Mahli unleashes power on the humans as they try to free themselves from the muck.

"Bloody tree."

Water erupts around the injured human and he screams for a moment before disappearing in the sudden column of water that tears through him. The water fountains up higher and mushrooms out to fall, stained red with the man's blood, the top of his knees peek out of the mud where they remain wedged in the mud.
[1/3]
>>
>>39477676

Before he can cast a final spell Mahli's staff is knocked free from his hands by a stone axe. A small one, meant for throwing, he notes to himself. The last human reaches behind him, probably for another axe. But Mahli doesn't require a staff to cast. He stretches a clawed hand out.

He does require the magic to enter him however. He always had issue with that part of magic, something he used the staff to obviate. Now though he pulls and doesn't even get the usual tiny leak of magic he can manage. The power refuses to appear, pulling away from him as soon as he can feel it in the air.

Shocked lizard eyes land on the humans. The human grins and cocks his axe back for a throw when soft human colored arms wrap themselves around his shoulders affectionately.

"Iskander?" the human says confused, looking over his shoulder. Sarissa smiles at him and allows her darker green coloration to return. Her arms snap close around the humans head and turn. She leaves him standing stuck in the mud, his chin facing the sky and his head the ground a look of confusion on his face.

"You weres here?" Mahli asks, surprised at his sister-in-law's appearance.

"Unlike you I actualll decided to look for your child," Sarissa said defensively, "I was sidetracked with the rest of their party."

"Sidetracked taking them as slowly as possible so they didn't know you were there," he says in flat accusation.

"Duh," Sarissa rolls her eyes, "And I assume you were skulking nearby waiting for Kasha to forgive you for something."
[2/3]
>>
>>39477701
[3/3]
Mahli said nothing. She'd see through any denial, and knew him and Kasha too well to have guessed wrong enough for him to call her on.

She still saw through him. "Well, gather your children. We should get them home. What is the troublemaker doing out here though?" she asks, seeing Sunniva.

Mahli shrugs sullenly, reaching down to pull his son out from under the body of the first human where he'd been pinned. The boy struggled, trying to get free for some fool reason, and finally Mahli forced Sarissa to take him. He still struggled, but Sarissa was good enough with knots that she could tie up a snake without bending it.

In short order they returned to the house, where Kasha was just finishing forcing the rest of her little ones to stop trying to come along while she checked out the fire from earlier.

Wonder if that passes down through genetics. Sunny is going to be the best pyromancer ever. Especially since she doesn't seem to have the same issue with drawing magic - Quite the opposite, from what I can see. She can draw it very easily, she just can't turn it off again.

>>
Lot's of talk. I wonder how much of this I should explain and how much I should leave to find out independently.

Well, she can turn it off. It's just the residual effect (fire) that's an issue.

"Dad? Dids you drown?"
>>
>>39477900
I figured she was just straight up vacuuming all the magic out of the air like a tiny incandescent hoover, so there was none left for Dad to use when he tried.

Either that, or the heavy use of fire magic made the area hostile to water magic?

I believe it has been previously stated that Smokey don't give two shits about swamps. Also despite burning through most of the chickens waiting in the rafters and doing a Colonel Sanders on the lead rooster the fire just caused surface burns, though some trees did fall over, none kept burning.

Mom heals herself and has ridiculous DPS. Auntie knows enough medicine to keep her and Dad fit from whatever gets past mom. So unless I forgot something in my notes, not any main party members.
