Current Recap:

Your name is Sierra Beckhoff. You are the coolest person you know, and with one notable exception, you are probably the most badass. Basically you’re the kind of person who takes care of business and gets the job done.

Currently, you’re in some magical medieval realm helping a dude named Frederick pull off an inter-planar invasion scheme. He’s up against long odds, but he’s like a George Washington wannabe, so he’s on the right side of history.

Through guile, stealth, and speed, you have successfully battled beetlemen, evaded xenophobic mage knights, outplayed fascist mage knights, and finally out-dueled an elementalist landmaster. At this very moment, you’re claiming the landwell as yours. Now only one question remains – can you escape the ancient metal terror you accidentally lightning-zapped back to life?

--

Your shadow cuts through the tingling veil of force around the landwell, and mingles with the gossamer grey light. A jolt of volcanic power erupts back up your shadow and wracks your body. (+5 Stress: 73/103) In a blink, the landwell contracts, redshifts to crimson, and flash like a second sun. The hellish implosion of light the momentarily turns the snowy white meadow a deep, bloody red.

At the same moment, a vast rusted hand wraps about your arms and body, bladed fingers pinching your arms in to your sides and threatening to cut through flesh.

But before it can sheer you in two, a violent wave of pressure flares out from the landwell, blowing back against you and the unseen thing at your back. Fire fills your core, super heating your heart and nearly to burn a hole out the back of your torso.
>>
>>39454083

You laugh maniacally at the insatiable force of raw power as it waves past you, catching the janky metal abomination at your back and forcing you out of its grip.

The flaming, dancing lines of power cut through your body, down all your limbs, incinerating your glamors in a heartbeat and saturating you with direct arcane energies. You can’t stop it – you know that by now. All you can do is hold on, because you’re along for the ride. At the moment when you feel you can take no more burning energy, the whole show shuts off, leaving you absolutely wired. (+15 Stress: 88/103)

Force begins pushing back against you, but you maintain a grip on the landwell, and go nowhere. The machine behind you screeches in inhuman tones, dull wrath and hatred radiating from it in droves. But not even the creature can resist the landwell, and the radiating red power sweeps it back, along with all the snow and ice around you.

The force continues pulsing past for a few moments, the landwell pulsing an increasingly angry red color from its original silver. Then, without warning, the effect ceases, and you fall out of the air to the damp ground.

Yellowed grass squishes under your knees. You feel totally sapped of energy, but then the newfound fire begins blazes in your veins once again, smoldering and racing. You forget your fatigue instantly. You feel like spitting fire, screaming and laughing, and blowing up all at the same time. (-5 Stress: 83/103; +24 PP: 35/35)

Before you, however, the awakened machine grovels in the mud. The half-formed figure is about twice as big as Ranthix, with multi-jointed, knife-like appendages that make you feel vaguely uneasy. It’s difficult identify the specifics behind its form, except for its massive iron ribcage and the partially caved in skull. Sparking wires dangle from its exposed innards, snapping with electricity and hemorrhaging oily fluids all over the snow. (Zorr: ???)
>>
>>39454102

With the landwell done with the power thing, though, there’s nothing keeping Zorr at bay. It begins standing back up, the furnace within its chest blazing brighter by the second.

But while the thing’s pretty damn scary, you can feel the new scariness stuff of your own coming through. So much new power in your pocket can only be a good thing.

You don’t want to fight whatever the hell this thing is, but there’s more than one way to beat a tactical retreat. Especially now that you feel all kinds of new stuff buzzing around within you. Wait. Do you have wings now? No time to check.

>Head toward Frederick and Rowan, the coast is clear, and you think Alan’s the one with the teleporting spell thing ready.

PP: 35/35

The landwell’s power courses through your veins, rapidly being incorporated into your vivacious blood.

You gain the following ability:

> Inflict Pain: You can now cause those around you to feel terrible pain, crippling foes and friends alike with searing agony.

Choose one of the following:

-Infernus-
Infernal Frenzy
>When you’re close to losing control, power of terrible proportions floods your body, lending you incredible strength. (When Stress is greater than 70, your strength is doubled)
Hastened Regeneration
>Nothing can keep you down. You heal faster than ever before, recovering from wounds even in the midst of combat. (Turn 4 PP into 1 HP per combat round)
Strength of Will
>You may expend power to increase strength, converting magical power into pure physical might.
Power of Blood
>Consuming blood now regenerates the spirit as well as the body. (Increase lowering of stress while consuming blood, also gain small amount of PP from blood)

-Verwelken-
Translucency
>You can allow light to pass through you for a short period of time, making you transparent. (1 PP/ sec when moving, 0.5 PP/second when still)
Displacement
>When no one’s looking at you, you can stop being where you are and be somewhere else instead – provided that it’s close by. You don’t necessarily know where you’ll show up ahead of time, though. (4 PP cost)
Ephemeral Eye
>You can quicken your reflexes beyond what they are already, going into a heightened state in which you can act faster than the speed of thought. (8 PP, give significant bonus to reflexes for a couple seconds)
Stepping of the Aether
>You can now temporarily interact with the invisible cosmic elements that bind space itself together. (Expend PP, gain ability to execute double jumps, step on water, and other such nonsense)

-Belphegoran-

Unnatural Charm
>Influence others’ perceptions of you, and gain some insight as to how to manipulate them into doing what you want. (Activated power, uses PP)
Corrupting Hex
>Destroy spells, buffs, or debuffs on target. (Moderate cost, utility spell)
Weaken
>Sap physical strength from the target, greatly hindering physical abilities. (Moderate cost, close range, debuff)
Disorient
>Confuse target, making coherent thought much more difficult than usual and temporarily limiting cognitive skills. (Moderate cost, medium range, debuff)

Also, upgrade one of the following.

Claws -> Bloodletting
>You reflexively know where to hit to cause the most bleeding possible. (Melee attacks cause damage over time at a rate of 1d3 per round on top of any other wounds or status effects inflicted, if left untreated.)
Venomous Fangs -> Paralytic Venom // -> Psychotropic venom
>Add alternative, nonlethal venom.
Blood Taste -> Red Quickening
> While in battle, tasting fresh blood sends you into a frenzy, making you faster, stronger, and more violent than before. (Gain bonus to damage and physical checks for one round after imbibing blood)

>Stepping of the Aether

>Claws -> Bloodletting

Hard deciding between Aether, Corrupting Hex, and Regen, but 1hp/round isn't that much considering our HP pool is a decent size, I suppose the ability to dodge in mid-air and run on water and maybe walk on walls and shit is too good to pass up.
>>
>>39454580
Regen would be amazing if we get Power of Blood to go with it. Latch onto something and keep draining it for blood and power all while poisoning it and regenerating while they try to damage us.

Ok. This is the Field of Rust. Our summons are always associated with some facet of Sierra's power, so the closest thing to rust is Blood.

Blood elemental time? Or maybe some kind of vampire thing. Or maybe it'll be some kind of hellish clockwork soldier, like Zote except less of an ass.
>>
>Aether won
Wish we'd gotten Hex since dealing with magic has consistently been an issue when it happens while mobility has almost never been a problem. And it'll become obsolete if/when we get wings.
That said, it was still my second pick because it is pretty cool. At least we don't have to learn how to swim now.
>>
>>39454835
We should get hex next time because it will let us disable whatever bullshit the landmaster guy tries to pull when we see him again.
>>
I can't remember, have we ever felt emotions come out of Zote? Because this big rusty robot is radiating emotions we can feel right now. Mostly emotions about how it wants us dead, but yeah. Kinda interesting.
>>

So...anyone wanna pick the soundtrack for Ranthix's whirling rampage of paternal-ish revenge?

Also, with both best demon AND Mr. Isaac Beckhoff behind her, I feel really bad for whichever poor male sod that wants to date her.

I don't think Isaac would be that kind of overbearing scare-the-boyfriend dad. He's been very deliberately hands-off about a lot of things.

Ranthix would definitely fuck with the poor bastards, though.

You can see Ranthix running toward you from behind your Zorr. Though safety is technically the opposite direction, you’re fairly confident that the close you get to the thultal, the less actual danger you’ll be in. You just have to get around the pointy machine thing without getting... uh. Pointed to death.

You’re the master of the land, though – you can feel it all around you, and with that feeling comes power. Namely some kind of thing within you that’s just dying to get out. Is it another Tiger? A Monster? Whatever it is,it’s probably just the distraction you need.

You point a claw at the angry abomination before you, and release the force of power trapped within you.

An explosion of flames and belching smoke gives way to... a... uh. A thing. A really, really big thing, bigger than you. It’s roughly the same shape of a Great White Shark, except wider, and just a little less long. It has huge metallic plates covering its bulk. Kind of like an armadillo? Except you’re pretty sure armadillos don’t have huge, razor sharp tentacles sprouting out all over the place.

If anything, it reminds you of a crustacean, or some kind of sea monster. Like a crab. Or a snake crossed with an octopus? Huh. Is this guy supposed to be aquatic? You’d feel guilty if you weren’t in mortal peril.

“Mrrrhhh,” groans lobster squid, sounding something like a beached whale. (Whale crab: 67/67 HP)

The nightmare machine’s furnace flashes. “ZORR,” it says. And then it races toward you.

You prepare to take evasive action, but your crab rolls with alarming agility to get between you and the machine, tentacles flailing. The crab bears its sharpened beak-like mouth, groans again, and spits out a stream of gelatenous, greyish mucus. The spray slaps against Zorr’s lower legs, adhering like glue and gumming up the thin, overly delicate joints of the legs.

Zorr trips up and faceplants, the snot-glue on its legs beginning to sizzle, smoke, and bubble.

Huh. Acid spit.
>>
>>39456074

“Uh. You got this one, yeah?” you say.

The crab propels itself forward, snaking its body forward and pushing against the groudn with its powerful tentacles. “Murrghehhh,” it growls, opening its boney beak and charging Zorr.

Zorr suddenly snaps the acid glue apart, and stabs a dozen knife-like fingers into the crab’s armored face, even as it bites down on one of the machine’s arms and starts spraying acid everywhere. (Whale crab: 35/67 HP)

Well, this is pretty much the distraction you were hoping for. You take off, half-limping and half-running toward Ranthix, skirting around the edge of the fight as much as possible.

Wait – you know what it reminds you of, now. Your crab is kind of like the thing from Tremors. Kind of a little bit, anyway.

“ZORR,” says the murder machine, turning its empty eye sockets on you. It twists out of the crab’s beak hold, and lunges at you with its chop shop hand outstretched.

Instinctively, you leap back, though somehow you feel lighter than you should, and wind up much higher than usual. (-2 PP: 33/35) Zorr shrieks and swipes higher at you, its arm unfolding its joints to get greater reach. You recoil, kicking off to get as far away as possible. (-4 PP: 29/35) You narrowly avoid death’s grip, and sail through the air for a brief moment.

Wait. You just kicked off of something? Off what? You’re in mid air! And looking down, it’s a long drop.

But it looks longer than it is. A second later, you crash to the ground, your already injured legs folding out from under you like a cheap card table. You smash to the ground, stars exploding before your eyes. (-2 HP: 17/28) (+2 Stress: 85/103)

Ugh. You could have done that better. Also worse, but whatever. You pop up and limp slash drag yourself toward Ranthix. Wow. He’s a lot closer than you thought he’d be.

“COME SPAWNLING, REVEL IN VICTORY!” Ranthix bellows, stooping down and scooping you up with one claw.
>>
>>39456095

You have no idea what’s going on, but all the sudden you’re looking at Ranthix’s back, and you think he’s carrying you over one shoulder? The demon turns sideways and retreats from the scene. Looking down, you can see under his arm.

The machine is ripping your poor crab apart, though the thing is nearly completely coated in acid glue mucus.

“DISGUSTING,” Ranthix says, bringing up a six-chambered grenade launcher with the other hand.

“Why do you have a fucking grenade launcher?” you shout. “There’s only knights and crap here!”

“I CAME HERE FOR GOLD, NOT GLORY,” Ranthix tells you. “THE STRONG NEED NOT PROVE THEIR STRENGTH.” And with that factoid out of the way, he aims at Zorr, who has finished wrenching off your crab’s head.

“Hold on!” you shout, concentrating on the launcher in his hand and corrupting it with your hatred. You just met whale crab, and stupid horror machines come ripping it up – fucking ZORRs. You make sure to get it corrupted enough to stain the grenades inside, as well as the material outside. (-2 PP: 27/35; +2 Stress: 87/103)

The abomination glides impossibly fast toward you and Ranthix, barely touching the ground as it goes.

“HA HA HA HA, GOOD,” he laughs, gripping the screaming weapon in his red claws, raising it toward the machine, and letting loose.

The launcher thumps, and a grenade streams out and connects with the front of Zorr’s skull, exploding with a resonant bang and staggering the thing’s approach. Chips of metal and ichor spray off from the point of impact, and the thing makes another terrible grating sound.
>>
>>39456122

And then Ranthix fires off the other five grenades. Somewhere in the concussive volley, the acidic glue coating the machine ignites, turning the whole thing into a terrible inferno.

Each blow impedes its progress, but doesn’t quite stop it entirely.

Ranthix scowls contemptuously when his weapon clicks empty, and turns his full attention on running. He turns toward Frederick and the others, keeping you firmly secured on his shoulder. You have a perfect view of the pursuing horror. It twists its burning head to the side, screeching in painful tones.

Your heartrate is going crazy, and a red haze of panic begins seizing in at the corners of your vision. Not good. (+4 Stress: 91/103)

“SLOW IT DOWN,” Ranthix barks.

“I uh – right on it!” you say, sending out the brain waves to get Monster and Tiger on scene. They’re still alive, right? If the graboid thing didn’t stop it, they won’t do much, but maybe they’ll buy you an extra second.

You see Tiger running toward you.

“YES, GO SHALBAAN, DIE FOR YOUR IMPERIATE,” Ranthix shouts as he and it run by one another.

The shalbaan makes a gravelly, metallic sound, and starts shooting out dorsal spines at Zorr. Predictably, they don’t do much, but the machine does take a moment to sweep the animal aside. Monster dives in a moment later and starts puffing bouts of fire at the thing’s face, but his contribution is negletible.

There’s probably more you can do, but you have more important things to think about, like not flipping the fuck out. You try to watch the ground as it speeds by, and focus your attention on Ranthix’s red claws as they cut through frozen dirt and mud. You’ve just got to not think about stuff, not think about machines and landwells or anything. Just... think about whatever. Like... guitar. Yeah. Gotta practice more or something maybe.

“DO SOMETHING!” Ranthix shouts.

You pop up, worried, but you realize he’s not talking to you, he’s yelling at all the others.

“Down!” Frederick orders, bringing up his lightning rifle.

Ranthix takes the dive, with you along for the ride. He turns mid air and shoulders the entirety of the impact himself. You’re left looking skyward for some reason, just in time to see a bolt of lighting crack overhead, accompanied by a crack of thunder.

Freddy fires off one thunder shot after another, hammering the killer machine with a summer storm’s worth of lightning bolts. You crane your neck and manage to get a look at Zorr, finding it actually flat on its face once more, though it’s not going to stay that way for long.

Immediately, Ranthix is back up and running toward the group. He skids into home base, unburdens himself of you, and sets you on your feet.
>>
>>39457114

You feel odd being on your own feet again, but somehow manage to retain balance.

Right next to you, Frederick swears at his steaming lightning rifle as he pries it open and tears out a half-melted battery. Zote, meanwhile, starts priming grenades one after another and hurling them toward the approaching metal monster.

“Don’t freak out,” you say to yourself, cradling your head in your claws. (+1 Stress: 92/103)

“Just a second,” says Alan, bracing himself in the midst of the group. He makes a complicated hand gesture, which somehow sends glowing white lines spreading all out over the ground around him. You recognize the pattern from the chalk pattern back in the parking garage.

Scott runs up, sliding into pace in one of the cirlces of the design. “Let’s get out of here!” he shouts.

“I need a second!” Alan replies.

“Nobody freak out,” you say. (+1 Stress: 93/103)

“We’ve got this in the bag,” Rowan says reassuringly, sword drawn.

A terrible sound fills the air. “ZORR.” The machine is back up, and its approaching even through the rhythmic blasts of Zote’s grenades.

Reeber makes his way over to you, drops his glamor, and plants himself between you and the machine with a menacing growl.

“YOU WILL HAVE YOUR SECOND, HELLBORN,” Rathix says, glowering as he slides grenades into his launcher.

You scowl heatedly at Rax. “Don’t you dare!” (+2 Stress: 95/103)

He scowls back as he rams another grenade into the weapon. “I WILL DO –“

A sudden thunderclap flattens the meadow, and sends your ears ringing.

The machine’s head snaps backward and explodes in a cascade of debris, knocking it off its feet and landing it flat on its back.

Orias bounds into his circle in the next instant, already ramming a brush down the muzzle of his dragon gun. “One second,” he says in an even tone.

But even headless, the machine rises and starts loping dangerously near.

“I lied!” Alan cries, eyes shut in concentration. “I need another second!”

“Everybody just fucking chill!” you demand. (+1 Stress: 96/103)

Rowan steps forward and plants a foot at the edge of the spell circle, immediately lighting up in full glow sticks mode. Her armor takes on a glorious sheen, her hair turns whiter than the stars, and her blade and halo blaze with golden fire. She smites the ground with the point of her sword, and a barrier of light erupts from the earth just in time to catch the machine.

“ZORR,” it shrieks, scratching at the impenetrable barrier.

“She’s a fucking demonbane!” Scott shouts, reflexively bringing up his shotgun.

Nope. Nobody shoots Rowan in the back.

Split seconds matter. You fumble with thoughts, just before throwing a hand forward, unleashing all the fire you can think of at Scott’s weapon. (-5 PP: 22/35) Hellish fire shoots forth, striking the hellborn’s weapon. And his arms. And him. Whoops. (+1 Stress: 97/103)

His glamor snaps and fades at the impossible heat, revealing a scaly, bulbously muscular figure, one with mandibles and twitching antenna. “Aagh!” Scott screams, recoiling from the flood of fire and dropping his half-melted shotgun. (Scott: 33/41 HP)

Well, that's good. He's not dead.

“Scott!” shouts Alan, wincing at his brother.

“Idiot, she’s saving your ass!” you say.

“Hey! When are we leaving?” Rowan asks frantically, her golden shield beginning to fade.

“Hang in there,” Alan tells his brother, finishing up with his spell thing. The lines in the ground brighten several degrees. “Get in the circles!”

You look down, and take a big step toward an unoccupied circle, situating yourself right in the middle.

“It’s going!” Alan shouts.

You feel space peeling aside, but at the same time, the golden shield cracks and shatters, and Zorr collapses forward, downward, whipping a burning hand full of knives at you, iron and acid sloughing off in equal measure.

No way you’re stepping out of a fucking teleportation circle. You raise your shield charm and use the last charge, and brace for impact. “Protege!” you shout. Your chainmail lights up with golden power, just as Zorr’s claw smashes through the invisible wall of force. The impact shoves your arm backward, and forces you to take a step backward to keep balance.

A minor chord sounds through the air as the recall does its work, accompanied by the sound of a metallic ringing, and Zorr’s knives follow a second later, just barely tearing at the front of your jacket and skittering off the surface of your chainmail. Zorr falls and collapses partially on the circle, smearing the outer lines just next to you

The air goes frigid, and suddenly the obscured circle below flies upward. Reality swirls into a cold void. No air. No ground. Only by white bars of light break the nothingness. But something’s not right – the bars begin tilting, not quite parallel. Slowly, the bars tilt, filling you with an inexplicable dread. You barely manage to keep your buzzing mind in check. Suddenly, the bars expand, replacing the void with light, though the air now is colder than before.

Also, you’re not standing on anything. In fact, you’re standing on a whole lot of nothing. You fall, having a few moment’s view of great stretches of deep green forests trimmed with white.

You hit a tree branch, and things get blurry while you hit other stuff. Then you’re not really sure what’s going on for a silent second, and then you plush back first into a great big snow drift, looking up at an evergreen tree. Pine needles rain down around you.

You stay still. You know you can’t handle much more of anything, and your control is slipping as is. You’ll have to uh... you’ll have to do the thing later.

You settle into your snowy bed and take a deep breath, concentrating on the way the cold seems to creep into your skull from your horns. You made it. No Eclipse, no landmasters, no Zorrs, you’re fine. Everything’s fine.

You focus on this thought for some moments, breathing in the crisp, piney air. The sky is impossibly blue overhead. Or maybe it’s just the regular blue? Things seem more vibrant now that you’re not almost dying at every moment. (-6 Stress: 94/103)

You can’t lie in snow all day. You sit up, though don’t stand up. You’re in your chill zone. No meltdowns allowed in the chill zone. (-2 Stress: 92/103)

You check your back for sweet wings, and find none. Although, you are wearing a bunch of crap. What if you actually did have wings? What if they were just waiting to spring out, but couldn’t because physics were getting in the way?

You guess that didn’t stop Rowan’s wings, but she only had that shirt in the way. You have freaking magic chainmail. You couldn’t rip through that stuff if you tried.

Unfortunately, you can’t think of any way to test your hypothesis that doesn’t require you to take off your shirt when it’s freaking 20 degrees or something outside. You’ll have to be careful later, though. You’re clever, you’re not going to destroy a shirt, not even on accident (-2 Strses: 90/103)

While you’re still keyed up pretty damn high from all the everything, you don’t feel so close to going all hypercritical all up in this. Must be the calming effects of silence, nature, and alone time.

You don’t want total alone time, though. You cup a hand to your mouth and shout into the quiet. “Reeber! Hey Reebs!” you say. You look around. “Reeeeeeeber,” you call again. “Reeb-reeb-rreeeebbbeeerrrr.”

You wait for a minute.

Huh. Maybe he landed someplace else?

You spot a rustling in the brush, and then suddenly a massive red hound with sharp horns busts out through the shrubbery and pounces you. You laugh and arrest his happy assault, grabbing his horns with your claws and turning his snout aside with your shadow. You lay him in the snow beside you, and pat his flank with big pats. (-5 Stress: 87/103)
>>
>>39458356
>just barely tearing at the front of your jacket and skittering off the surface of your chainmail
Thanks Harvey. For the non-sexy combat damage, I GUESS.
>>
>>39459574

Reeber licks at the snow, and then reverts to rolling around in the powder.

And, you guess, checking your deathly danger ring, there’s no deathly danger. The real question is why wasn’t it going off earlier? Or maybe it knew Hugo wasn’t trying to kill you? Or maybe it was going off, and you were too preoccupied with being smashed by Hugo the landmaster? Or maybe it knew you’d escape, and didn’t say anything?

What kind of cruddy ring is this? You don’t want to think about it, you want it to work, dammit! (+1 Stress: 88/103)

You sigh and shake your head. Later, you’ll worry about it later.

But now that things are not crazy, you actually have things to deal with. Like. You’re in the middle of some forest. Are you still in Cerra? You sure as hell aren’t in San Fransisco, there’s no snow anywhere near the Bay Area, ever.

Are the others around here, but really spread out? Reeber’s here, so that’s something at least, but you won’t be much of a hiker for another few hours at least with your legs all janked up.

You snort to yourself. This is exactly like one of Isaac’s war stories. Deep behind enemy territory, surrounded by kraut Thul socialists, with nothing but a Mosin Nagant, two bullets, and some guy named Sergei to keep you company in the deep Russian winter.

And you don’t even have Nazi demon shock troops from your mom hunting you down. This is a piece of cake.

First thing to do in a lost in the wilderness situation, don’t freak out. You’ve already got that one down in spades. Now... resources. You look behind you, reach back, and snatch up Zelathis. Don’t want to get all delirious and leave that guy just lying around someplace. You slip the lightning sword into your sheath. Getting it done, that’s you.

You pat down your pockets, and realize you’ve got your cell on you. It’s been a couple days since you charged it, but hey, it’s still got some batteries. You can google earth it right out of dodge. You check your cruddy phone, for a second, but find you have zero bars. Stupid Sprint. So maybe you are still in Cerra, but maybe you’re just in the middle of nowhere. Like Colorado. Screw Colorado.

All right, so you can’t just call the coast guard or the forest rangers or whatever. If it was that easy, it wouldn’t be a survival scenario.

The next step is to get someplace high up and get a vantage point on things. Seeing as walking is a problem, you’d rather not do that too much. Luckily, you have an unmanned aerial reconassaince imp that can do the job that much better. “Quit sloughing off and go find something,” you say, conjuring Monster up from nothingness. (-4 PP: 19/36)

The imp snarls and shoots off into the sky. You give him a minute, then look through his eyes.

Trees. More trees. Uh. Snow. Hills! Distant mountain... and... uh. Huh. Wow.

You let him go with an imperative to go find something that’s not nothing. This could very well be Colorado. Maybe. Stupid Zorr, screwing up everything. Not everything, actually. He won you the duel at least.

You kind of wonder what’s going on with the others. Are they scattered around these woods? Or are they all in the parking garage, freaking out?

You don’t imagine Ranthix is content with you vanishing off the face of the earth.

Music with ah heavy beat begins playing, but almost too quiet to hear. “All I wanna do is” POW POW POW POW “And” click. Ching! “And take your money.”

What the hell? Wait. You check your pocket and pull out your phone. Caller ID says Ro, and a picture of her in her winter ball getup pops up on the screen.

You answer it.

Ro’s voice comes over, but it’s really garbled. “Hello? Are you ---- hellooo? S--- okay?”

“I’m fine!” you shout. “I’ve got Reeber too!”

There’s a burst of static. “—gracious, I’m so --- Sierra?”

“Where are you?” you ask loudly. “You in the forest too?”

“Not ---- back in---- find you!”

“No look, I think I’m in Colorado!” you say. “Well, y’know, someplace with trees and... uh. Mountains? Snow?” You hear nothing but static. “Rowan? Hello? Are you still there?”

Beep beep beep.

“Dammit.” You pocket the phone. “At least I’m on the right plane, I guess. Unless Sprint’s really just getting crazy with its network coverage.”

Reeber looks up at you.

“Just thinking aloud, bud,” you tell him. “Chill.”

He makes a sad noise.

“Don’t whine at me, this is all fine,” you say. “We’ve got survival skills.”

Reeber sets back down in the snow.

“Survival survival,” you say to yourself. Right. Back on topic. You should probably make a shelter of some kind, to get out of the snow. But you should also not be horribly injured. Freaking mud golems.

You shiver, realizing how cold you are for the first time. Now that you’re not existing on adrenaline, the fact you got doused in icy mud is not working out with you. You’re cold and wet in the middle of nowhere. Nobody’s going to be happy to find your frozen corpse years down the line.

You left your backpack of goodies on the ground during the fight, and you left your coat on the embankment. You grit your teeth. Stupid. Stupid stupid. (+2 Stress: 90/103)

No, wait. Stay calm. That’s the key. That’s the key because freaking out might actually get you killed in this situation, even if there’s nobody else around to get hurt.

Uh. What do you do? Something something... something.

You focus on the pain. Leg pain. Broken bones. Right. You examine your legs more closely, not really wanting to see the terrible bruises they’ve got. Poking and prodding and shifting around is kind of painful, but not excruciatingly painful.

>>39460584

Just... really painful. You could walk, so it’s not like that one time you fell off that overpass. No compound fractures. Maybe hairline? Not so bad. Nope. Everything’s not so bad.

But the cold is bad. You can make a fire, and you’ve got Reeber and stuff probably, so... yeah. But you need someplace that isn’t two feet deep in snow. Snow shelter!

“Reeber,” you say, “dig be a hole!”

Reeber leaps to and gets just a few yards off in a nice spot.

Damn he’s smart. “Uh. Good boy,” you say. “Just... keep doing that.”

You hobble over, falling over and crawling the rest of the way. You help him dig, mostly using your shadow. Snow doesn’t feel so cold against solid darkness. Is there blood in your shadow? Does that even make sense biologically?

Anyway, the work keeps you distracted for quite a while, till you’ve got a pretty nice pit going on. Before it gets too intense, you send Reeber out for some pine branches and stuff. You brush them off, and hop down into the sheltering hole and spread them around so you won’t just be on the frozen ground. You make Reeber join you for space-heating purposes, and arrange a couple broken boughs over the top of your shallow grave so as to trap the heat.

So tired and cold. You lie on Reeber, reveling in his warmth. Water continues steaming off you, which seems kind of strange now that you’re thinking about it.

I vaguely remember Sierra saying something about not liking drugs because when she was a kid they kept trying to drug her with shit because of her anger issues.

Dunno if she meant it as just the perscription zombification shit or if there was an aversion to most stuff, but it would account for how she didn't really even use much when she was with a fucking gang.

stress relief? Sure, but we can have other options that lower it a lot, like keth'gi (or whatever that demonic yoga thingy is named).
also yogas don't cause addiction.
if you insisted using qualified medical chemicals prescripted from a doctor, I wouldn't have been this negative, but street drugs are invalid.

Wait just a second. You can’t just go to sleep, that’s how all those stories end – they fall asleep and die. You’re not some chump in a chump change story to scare kids into not being stupid.

You sit up, and shake your head a little. All right. Clothes are wet. That’s not going to work. Gotta get dry. Rule number one. You remove your slightly torn jacket, angry at its damages, take off your chainmail, and remove most of the other stuff. You feel a whole hell of a lot colder than you did a minute ago, but that’s to be expected when you’re soaked.

You lie out your clothes as best you can, and start up a little hellfire. You’d love to get a real fire going, but you don’t know where it’d go. You don’t want the needles going up and being a problem.

You turn on a slow burn and crouch over your clothes, trying to keep them generally in the spotlight of the heat without being too near the edges of the snow where they might get wet. You keep up the barbeque for a while, which has the advantage of heating up your snowy domicile, even if it is kind of power intensive.

As the minutes tick by, you actually feel yourself getting drier and not so freaking jittery and shivery. You roast the moisture out of your hair, even if you can’t do anything about the mud. After all that, even though your clothes aren’t totally dry, you put the jeans underneath you so you’ve got something better than leaves to sit on, and focus on drying off your jacket.

You eventually get it thoroughly dried off, and shrug it back on, happy to have something between your skin and the frigid Coloradan air. (-10 PP: 9/36)
>>
>>39460926
that answeres my statement of "we should not use drugs at all"
Seriously, why did the discussuion about survival suddenly turn into drugs?
>>
>>39460929

Sierra: 1.
Ice Forest: 0.

Except there’s still some heat radiating from you, even without your hellfire going. You notice a brief spark of light at your shoulder, and turn to look more closely. Little flames are just kind of waving up from your upper arms and shoulders. You frown, and wave a hand over your head. You feel flames there as well.

The hell? You’re just kind of on fire for no reason. That’s not normal.

Your jacket’s not burning at least. You think that has something to do with the enchantments Moriah put on it. It pays to have witch friends.

Well, it looks like you’re not freezing to death now at the very least. You’re still tired, but you’re not the desperate get-yourself-killed tired of half an hour ago.

Reeber's having a blast just basking in the heat of your flames. He makes for a pretty badass sidekick, albeit a really cuddle-some kind of adorable sidekick.

>If you insist that she did, she currently didn't show any signs of addiction so far, or even using drugs for that matter.

You don't get addicted by trying drugs. You get addicted by using drugs repeatedly. And her not taking anything for 80 threads is pretty easy to explain. People do drugs for fun or as a group activity. She lost all her friends she would otherwise have done it with and found different ways to relax, not to mention getting cut off from her supply. And we, you know, have not voted for her to do any. Doing drugs is a group activity and is expected and assumed in gangs that sell.
>>
>>39460880
Yeah, the people acting like she's a total straightedge are weird. At the same time, though, so are the people acting like she's some kind of xX420QueenOfTheDankXx. I doubt she'd turn it down if someone offered, but I don't think she'd be the type to seek out tons of drugs or view them as the solution to her problems.

And anyone trying to portray drug use as a serious solution is deluding themselves. The biggest danger of bloodrages is always during combat and getting high during fights or sneaky shit is just a plain bad idea.

Oh neat.

I remember Meckor was constantly on fire. I guess we just unlocked the FIRE, MOTHERFUCKER infernus physical trait. Hope it doesn't fuck with our shadow stuff too much.

>Do stuff (?)
Check our reflection in the phone screen. Landwells usually cause stuff to happen. I wanna see if there's anything obvious.

Have Monster continue to scout. Maybe if he finds a deer or something he can chase it towards us and Reeber can fuck it up. But really the main aim should be finding that cell tower. Or a cabin or something. Who knows, maybe we're in the middle of a ski place. Wouldn't that be some shit? We're sitting here and some jackoff skis right into our hole.
>>
>>39461071
Reeber is our heat source when we're not doing our "Be on fire" thing. And Monster is pretty much useless for everything that doesn't involve reconnaissance
>>
>>39461052
Because someone makes a joke about drugs, then someone takes them seriously, and then people try to correct that guy, and then it keeps going.

Oah, and to keep it going I'll correct you. She is pretty clearly talking about prescription medication. “I’m not taking drugs,” is a declaration that she will not accept prescription drugs given to her for her anger issues. You check your phone again. You got service, if only for two and a half seconds. Unfortunately, you’re in one of those zones where calls can get in (sometimes) but they definitely don’t ever get out. But it shouldn’t be that bad. If you got up someplace high, maybe you’d get cell reception? Wouldn’t that be fucking great, just call a cab back home and ride out in style.

You shut off the display, but pause before returning the phone to your pocket. Phones make for good mirrors.

You just got a landwell, and usually when that happens, stuff gets crazier about you. The fire thing, well, maybe you saw that coming. Meckor was always on fire, so maybe you just inherited your EVERYTHING IS NOW ON FIRE thing. But ever since you fell out of the sky, you’ve noticed some oddities going on, and you haven’t really thought about it. What’s new?

You certainly don’t have wings, which sucks. Maybe they’ll come in tomorrow, like that time you woke up with a tail. That was badass. Just thinking about it makes you actually consider the fact that you have a fucking serrated tail. You’ll just wake up with bone wings or some crap like that. You can see it now. Oh ho yeah.

But besides wings, you’re a little more spiney than before. Like. You’ve got little black spines poking out through your skin on your shoulders, hips, and up and down your backbone. Like. Your bones are just too metal to be contained in their fleshy prison. It’s going to be a bitch getting tangled up in the covers when you finally get to a bed. It’s bad enough already with all your horns and blackened bone skin or whatever the hell’s going on with that, but now it’s literally going to be all over the place all the fucking time.

Guess it’s the price you pay for just being the dammed coolest thing on the face of the earth.

Except wings. Fuck, half the reason you came out was for the wings. No wings, no deal. Too late though. Whatever, you’ll find more landwells sooner or later.
>>

You get on your knees and peer outside of your lair. Sun’s sinking. Not much daylight left. Wasn’t much daylight left in Cerra, either, now that you think about it.

You don’t plan on a long term survival situation. Your plan is to get strong and go home. That’d go a lot quicker with a whole lot of fresh blood. You find your mouth watering at the prospect.

You turn from your secretive viewings of your surroundings and shake Reeber awake. “Listen boy,” you tell him seriously, “I need you to get me something with a lot of blood in it.”

Reeber sits up and yawns.

“Blood, Reebs,” you say. “I need blood. Look. You don’t want to live in the forest, I don’t want to live in the forest. At least not this cruddy ice forest. Muir woods is where it’s at.”

Reeber watches you with dull eyes.

“You want to get back to California, go kill me a deer or something. We’re in the middle of nowhere, should be plenty of things to eat.” You order Reeber out of the hut, and help shove him up to ground level. So heavy. Royal Hellhounds, man.

You point him off in some direction. “Listen, you see anybody, glamor up, got it?” you say. “Don’t need the FBI or the local Marshal or whoever breathing down my neck. Actually, you see anybody, it's a good thing, just bring ‘em back here. It’ll make things faster.”

Reeber trots off.

You use your ESP to tell Monster to assist Reeber in the hunt. No way the duo will go long without a catch, not with full ground and air coverage.

Imma get real abstract in a moment. You just said that because of constant media exposure and framing, all drugs are conditioned to unilaterally equal, "bad-bad no-no." That's fine if it doesn't effect anyone else and you live your entire life not partaking in such substances. But you live in 'murica. And in 'murica, you vote for people and these sometimes these people are complete fucksticks. And these fucksticks then do stuff like statues that impose decade long prison sentences for otherwise law abiding, decent citizens for their choice of recreational activity. Kids that could have lived normal, productive lives and grown up to be integral parts of the community are lost to private prisons and the whole stupid parole system that has the highest recidivism rate in the entire world. And it's all because little people like you nod and go along with fucksticks want to "fight the good fight against drugs."

No offense here mate. I get a looser late at night. And here's how it works in America. Say you're in a mid-western state like Arkansas. An undercover police officer can push you to try to buy pot from you using peer pressure.

http://reason.com/reasontv/2013/10/09/riverside-cop-tricks-autistic-teen-into

Cops do this to everyone from white college students to "urban youth." Once he's got you in his clutches, you're off to jail with a permanent mark on your record. You sit in prison for a few years doing jackshit and losing years of your life, not learning skills or trades, and festering into a useless lump. When you're thrown out again, with no prep or support, no-one will hire you because of your permanent record. Aid agencies will lessen support. Family generally distances your for being a pariah. And that's if you're lucky. You get locked up in a private prison, you're at risk for starving, getting so little care or oversight your teeth rot off, and *PRIVATE* guards *NOT* working for the state can literally take your life with almost no repercussions. It's a fucking shitshow.

Is it really that hard to understand CAPITALISM?
>>
>>39461750
Think of your favorite dystopian cyberpunk setting. Ok. Got something in mind? Good. Now imagine it with all the cool shit stripped out and the high tech stuff dropped down several stages.

That's America.

I for one, am planning to offer my soul and body to Solar Lord Elon Musk to ditch this planet and start anew on Mars.
>>
>>39461807
Money. It's a numbers game over here, and to get the biggest numbers you have to sell more morals then the other guys.
>>
>>39461833
That's overly bleak. I'm living a perfectly fine and normal life without any of your dystopian bullshit.

You may want to head to /pol/ with the other guy.

You can't tell me what to do! You'll have to call back between 7-2. Then you can bitch all you want and I'll nod and assure you that we're doing everything we can to ensure your train moves on time.

Relax. We're not fighting. We're shitposting. There's a very well defined difference. It's a formal procedure and expected formality to end threads.
>>
>>39461964

Well, that kind of depends on your parents.
>>
>>39462026
Fuck you, I am in a right to work for less state.
>>
>>39462026
I remember when I hated unions. All that nonsence about greedy lazy communists who want to take over businesses that they dint own. Then I started working a job.
>>
>>39462107

>>
>>39462035
>>39462036

>>
>>39461530

>>
>>39462200
If only there was some trick to not smoking as much. We could get the same high for less money.

Too bad it has a minimum consumption requirement.
