Welcome to Magical Soldier Quest! Your name is Akane Shougo, once a member of the prestigious Alpha Squadron of the Magical Threat Response Team, and now, apparently, a magical boy. Somehow. But this doesn’t matter too much to you, since you’re currently having a really bad dream.

Your feet hit the ground, again and again, sometimes bouncing straight off the hard surface and other times sinking into a soft patch waiting to catch you. The trees around you bend, not in the wind but by their own volition, all attempting to get close to you and grab you.

You’re having the dream again, but you can feel at least some measure of control over your actions. Ahead, you see two paths: one leading through two trees close together, but with a rippling beyond them, that exit from this hell, and another that keeps going, further into this hell.

>Try to go through the trees. It’s worth the risk to leave this place!
>Avoid them, and follow the path. Don’t risk it.

For newcomers, all choices have Write Ins available, including combat. Write Ins, depending on how good they are, may improve your chances of "succeeding", depending on exactly what you're doing. For most Write Ins you may also be required to roll 3d10, where:
1. Two dice equal to or more than DC is success,
2. Three dice equal to or more than DC is a crit success,
3. One or less dice equal to or more than DC is failure,
4. And all dice less than DC is crit fail.

It'll usually be a best out of the first three rolls, so rolling three ones doesn't mean you have to start crying.

You turn away from the path and start running towards the break in the trees, running faster and faster. If you let them touch you, you're fucked. you're sure of it. But even risking that is far better than spending a minute more in this hell-hole.

Just as the trees ahead attempt to block you, you slide underneath the branches, the cold hard flooring turning into some sort of marble as you go underneath the violent trees.

Only three more steps to the portal. The trees behind you unbend, and start turning back to you.

Two more steps. This is it. You can go now. You won't have to stay.

One more step.

"Where do you think you're going?"

---

You wake up with a gasp, some sweat pouring down your forehead. That nightmare again. Usually it's a once a year thing, around the time of your parents' death, so this is strange indeed.

You slowly get out of bed as you recognize the room around you. You're inside Haioku, the definitely-not-floating island. After all, you have a fear of such things, and you would never ever volunteer to go on one.

Right?

Near the door to the room, you see some folded clothes, along with a note. Picking up the note, you read the message.

"Hey there, Shogo. Get dressed in this stuff (sorry, couldn't get the armor, soon though!) and come out to the training yard. It's just down the hallway. You can eat breakfast first, if you want.

You put the note to the side, and pick up the clothes themselves. With some relief, you find that they are actually clothes for grown men, and not pre-teen girls. Or aliens. Or whatever magical girls are considered. It's just a plain shirt and set of jeans, along with a light coat for the weather. You shrug it all on, and, grabbing your bag of equipment, begin walking to the training yard.

---

You feel your knees weaken as your beliefs are crushed and as your mind is laid bare to the truth. The training yard is a long stretch of space, with a few stone pillars here and there, with the sky shining down on you. It's also shining up at you, since you're floating a mile above the ground. You spot a group of magical girls doing some magic training, ignoring the fact that this entire island could drop at any time if something were to merely absorb some energy. You also spot Eliza, who's waving at you.

After taking a few shuddering breaths to quell the oncoming panic attack, you manage to make your way over to Eliza, who is waiting for you with a group of Magical Girls, who are all passing back and forth a ball of energy.

"Hey, Shogo, good to see you up and running. Feeling okay after yesterday?"

You shrug. "I'm doing fine, I guess. Just need to stretch a little. I'm guessing that's what I'm going to be doing here?"

Eliza nods. "That's right! Now, you certainly have proved your capability of fighting, but I think first I want to test your moves against some of us. I think we can agree the incident yesterday," you catch her looking past your shoulder, where you can make out Marie and a group of other Em-Gees watching you, "likely a one-time thing. So, first things first, we want to try you against one of us.

"Oh, oh! Can I get first go against him?" One of the Em-Gees speaks up, pausing with the energy ball in her hand. "All of you are better than me, and I'd like to have a go."

Another Em-Gee shakes her head. "I'm oldest, I get to go first."

Eliza sighs. "Listen, guys, It's Shogo's choice. What do you want to do?"

"Uh, actually, can I watch you guys fight first? I need to check over my equipment, and I want to get a feel for what I want to do."

They nod, and Eliza turns back to the group. "So who wants to show off?"

The senior Em-Gee and the energy-ball Em-Gee (you need to get their names at some point) walk off to the centre of the training yard, where the tall stone pillars are clustered in random areas. Some other magical girls move to the side to make some room for them.

Eliza herself jumps up onto a taller stone pillar to the side of the match area, and shouts, "Begin!"

Senior starts rushing the instant Eliza commences the fight, moving faster than you would with your exo-skeleton. She darts in and slices at Energy-Ball, who tries to dodge but gets hit in the upper arm. You can spot a small red line, with a drop of blood starting to trickle down.

Senior turns around and attempts to come in for another cut, but Energy manages to respond beforehand, lifting both your arms and pushing back at Senior. A huge wave of wind splashes out, slowing Senior to a halt. Energy-Ball continues to throw the blasts of wind, stopping all forward motion by Senior.

After running around for a bit, Senior jumps to the top of one of the pillars, where she jumps off above Energy-Ball's head. A little too late, the younger Em-Gee blasts upwards, but not before Senior gets into a dive and cuts through the wind.

Landing next to Energy-Ball, Senior takes her hand again, now with a visible blade of light, and puts it against Energy-Ball's throat.

"Good game, Maggy. Just a little too slow." Senior comments, as Ener...Maggy slumps slightly.

"Yeah, you're right, Jamie."

You stand back, watching all of this.

Alright, writing, >>39430111 managed to win it for ya.

From the fight, you manage to pick up that Jamie, for all that she won, is actually the weaker Em-Gee. Maggy's wind blasts were definitely powerful enough to keep Jamie back, it was just that Jamie was very fast, and was on the offensive the entire time. You're sure that if she could concentrate her wind blasts more, she would have won with a well placed shot.

You also notice that Jamie, for all her speed, can't handle tight turns. Even when she used the pillar, she had to slow down even to just manage to run up it, whereas you could land on a wall and jump off again.

The final thing is that both of them, even if the fight was over relatively quickly, are very powerful. You can see the difference between Em-Gees and normal people. Though Roland would beg to differ...

"Nice fight, guys. Now, Eliza, if I am going to fight one of them, can I get some form of armor?"

Eliza smiles. "Sure, but you have to accept whatever can fit you, since we're still waiting on that new set."

Seeing Eliza's expression, you raise your hands. "Nevermind, I think I'll just grab my old set. I'll survive with the dirt, I'd rather be comfortable."

Ignoring Eliza's quiet mutter, you turn back to Jamie and Maggy. "And for my first fight...Maggy, was it? I'd like to spar with you first."

Maggy nods happily. "Sure, Shogo. We'll wait."

Waving a quick goodbye to the group, you run back to your own room. You had set the armor against the wall after quickly dousing it down with some water, so it looks mostly fine now, with only the armor plating on the boots and elbow pad looking the most worn.

You quickly shrug on the suit, and activate its various enchantments, allowing yourself to get comfortable again with moving far faster than usual. It takes about a tenth of the effort to move in this armor than usual, so you have to be careful with your speed and strength.

You jog back to the training field where the group of Magical Girls await you. You still spot Marie and her group glaring at you, but you ignore them.

Maggy grabs your hand and pulls you along to the centre of the match area, where she turns to face you again and bows. "Good luck!" she says.

You bow back. "Uh, good luck to you too."

Eliza resumes her place on the judge's pillar. "Are the fighters ready?" You and Maggy chorus yes. "Then fight!"

You saw Jamie win with her more straightforward approach, so copying it may be the best choice.

As Eliza shouts fight, you jump forward, taking advantage of your exo-skeleton. Again, you're not faster than Jamie, but you can change directions faster. This becomes apparent as Maggy unleashes a blast of air, only to be shocked when you've jumped straight over it, and you're still rapidly approaching.

Maggy sends another wind blast your way, but you duck under it and roll along right until you're up against her, ready to tap the not-so-pointy side of your razor against her head, but this time she manages to form a highly concentrated blast at you, sending you flying back.

Catching yourself against a pillar, you watch for a few moments as she experiments quickly with the stronger blasts, and turns back to you looking a hell of a lot more confident. Looks like that strategy you thought of has occurred to her. But no matter. You jump off against the pillar, and keep dodging and weaving amongst the blasts until you're not that far away again from Maggy. At this, she unleashes another large blast but with the same power as her concentrated ones, rushing towards you again.

And you watch in horror as Maggy is blasted far enough to go off the edge of the island.

No. Fuck no. No fucking way are you gonna accept this.

Fucking floating islands.

Ignoring the screams of a few magical girls, you start running, jumping off the side of the pillars to essentially start flying through the air between jumps.

Keeping an eye on Maggy, you see her start to descend from the peak of the blast, quickly heading down past the edge of the island, down towards the lake. So with one last superhuman jump, you head towards her, catching her in the air and placing your right hand over her heart. You quickly find out where the core is, and feel the boundless amounts of energy within, crying for release. She isn't using a tenth of her full strength. So, figuring it will recharge and she's not using it anyway, you sap a little energy, and throw her back to the island.

As you throw her back, assisted once again by the energy, you twist your body back to face the Lake, preparing for a dive.

That's when you remember thinking about why it's such a terrible idea to have a floating island one mile in the air.

Alright. Okay. You certainly weren't trained for this, but hey, who the hell was trained to fight a Witch and survive?

Taking a breath, you focus on the energy within you. Just a little bit left from Maggy's magic. Is it enough to stop yourself? Maybe. Only one way to find out.

In the last twenty seconds, you gather the energy, pulling it towards your feet again, concentrating it until it almost feels like there's a solid platform waiting there. So you push it out, using the blast like a trampoline. You feel the platform slowly sagging beneath your feet, going further and further down, the energy quickly running out. And finally, you feel it break, unable to send you flying back up.

Luckily, you're only a few metres above the water at this point, so you drop in rather than splattering.

Whoo. What fun.

You look up, and spot a few Em-Gees starting to descend towards you, who hadn't reacted fast enough to save Maggy.

Well, time to wait, you guess.

"Shogo, I don't think I have to tell you how absolutely utterly insane that maneuvre you just pulled was."

You shake your head. "No, ma'am."

"And you know that you're never ever going to do something like that ever again."

"Yes ma'am."

Eliza sighs. "Either way, you lived. Which is good, I guess. And we have a better idea of how your own personal brand of magic works. So, for your next training assignment, we're sending you with Jamie on her first Witch Hunt."

You look up in surprise. "Wait, what? I mean, I'm happy to, but you say this is her first? And I'm going with her, not someone more experienced?"

Eliza shrugs. "Most magical girls in my time managed quite well on their own. You also forget that there are different levels of Witches. Most have a low enough power level that newbies can defeat them handily. Still a far cry from the ability of mortals, but that situation doesn't really come up that often."

"Except in my case."

"Remember that you too have a magical core, Shogo. Even if it's not active, it still has some form of power, which is where you're getting your abilities from. Now, ignoring all that, I believe you'd be a good partner for Jamie since you both have similar fighting styles. You can predict what the other would do, since you're both capable of the same things and would do the same things. That sound fine?"

You nod, after a few seconds. "I guess. But I still don't have my new armor, and my old set is still waterlogged."

Eliza smiles at this. "Perfectly fine! I got a few of the girls on a rush order of a new set of armor for you, which should be ready just now. Want to go see it?"

You nod, standing up from the chair you've been sitting in. "Sure."

>>
>>39432548
“Wow. This is my armor?”

The magical girl nods, pulling her hand away from the final enchantment on the suit. “Yep. It’s one of the best we’ve ever made! We started off with the recon armor as a base, but it’s not good enough. It’s made to go with an exo-skeleton, you see, but since you’ve got the best team of Enchanters this side of the Pacific making this for ya, we don’t need to take that into consideration. In fact, all of the enchantments here replace every mechanical component there is! Feather-Foot, Speed Enhancement, Reflex Enhancement, and even a butchered Time-Stop spell so your perception can keep up with your movement! I guarantee you, with this absolutely superior mobility and speed, this armor is worthy of a magical girl!”

You nod, inspecting it all. “Ah. I guess that’s why it actually looks like a magical girl uniform.”

The Em-Gee frowns, putting her hands back on the armor till it transforms from the gaudy colors and illusionary plating to a much more minimalistic black, with nodes running up and down it. “Fine, here you go.”

“Perfect.”

Eliza steps up to you now, with Jamie in tow. “Now that you’ve got your armor, you should be able to fight just fine, and stay on a level with Jamie on this. Remember though, you’re still a mortal, and if you ever do get hit by a Witch or even a Lieutenant then you’re down for the count.”

You nod. “Understood. So, Jamie, since I’ll be partnering with you, what’s the plan?”

Jamie hands over a report, very similar to the ones you would use to write up for Alpha Squadron after any mission. “A small gate opened up north in one of the suburbs, in some private beach. Luckily, no one was around, and MTRT managed to shut down the portal before anyone got hurt. We’ll be going now to open it up again and kill the Witch. Now, since I’m faster, I’ll take care of the Witch while you stop the Lieutenants and lesser demons from bothering me. Sound good?”

After about ten minutes, after you get into your armor and Eliza drops the two of you off, you find yourself in the area of the portal. You actually manage to sense that the gate is slightly open, which confirms itself when you spot a few lesser demons standing just outside the portal, kicking over sandcastles built earlier in the day.
Jamie looks to you from her position a few metres ahead. “What do you want to do?”

You nod at Jamie, and jump up in the air. You can feel the Feather-Foot enchantments working on keeping you light, well under half or even a quarter of your weight, not even mentioning how much faster you could propel yourself, so you find yourself two dozen metres above the heads of the demons. Turning off Feather-Foot, gravity takes hold again and you drop down towards them.

As you land, you use one demon as a stop for your, foot, managing to drive the entire demon straight to the ground with your force, its body quickly disintegrating. As it turns to ash, the other demons turn to you, but not before your Razor blade is out and cutting off their heads.

You make short work of them all, finally leaving you standing on the ashen sand, the portal pulsating every few seconds behind you. Jamie walks towards you, giving a thumbs up, before turning to the portal. “Since it’s already open, and I’m not too great at Enchanting or Destruction spells, let’s get in and kill the Witch as fast as we can. Remember to watch my back, so nothing can get close.”

You nod, and she puts her arm over your shoulder, walking the both of you towards the portal.

As you enter the portal, you feel the worlds shifting, as if the corners of two different cubes lined up at just the right point so there was a pathway.

Not too soon after, the cubes split apart again as you and Jamie exit the portal, this time in the different dimension. You take a few steps forward, looking around.

The new dimension appears to be pretty small, infinitely smaller than the world you used to inhabit. At the least, you can pinpoint exactly where the portal is (behind you) though you know you could sense it anywhere in the cube.

>Skill Learnt: Magical Radar! While the normal world is far too huge to even think of searching for portals in it this way, within Witchspace and other dimensions you can actually find your way back no matter what.

Even with your new ability, you still feel slightly put off by the constantly shifting scenery. You can tell they’re Illusions, but they are masterfully done, so that the world changes just as it leaves your view, so that you could turn around and see something completely different once you complete the turn.

Jamie herself seems to be affected quite a bit by the Illusions. “Uh, this is weird,” you hear her mutter, before looking around to find you. “Uh, Shogo? You there?”

>Say you’re right next to her.

“Hey, Jamie. I’m right here.”

Jamie turns a few times, sometimes stepping to avoid a rock that isn’t there, before she finds you. “Ah! You sure moved far.”

You sigh. “It’s an illusion, Jamie. You’re only two metres from the portal.”

Jamie slowly nods. “Okay. You can see?”

“I can. Kinda. I see the Illusions, but when I went through that portal I suddenly…realized where everything was. I’ll be able to lead us back to the portal if we get in trouble.

Jamie nods again. “Alright then. Do you know where the Witch is?”

You feel around the dimension, before centering on the…center. “Yep. Shall we go?”

“Please. Lead the way.” As you start to move, she follows with some caution, sometimes trying to brush away some Illusionary branches, at others just grabbing onto your shoulder and closing her eyes, walking across the Illusionary bottomless ravine.

Eventually, you cross a boundary, and the Illusions disappear, replaced with mirrors. Jamie sighs. “Thank god that’s over with. Here we are, I guess. My, she’s narcissistic, isn’t she”

You can’t help but agreeing. Mirrors are absolutely everywhere, some displaying other parts of the dimension, others all displaying a picture of the same person, a rather attractive Eastern European, though ruined by the cracks and fractures running along her skin and the empty sockets where the eyes are. So really, not that attractive at all.

“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING IN MY DOMAIN!”

You turn to face the owner of the voice, the same woman that all the mirrors are reflecting. It’s remarkably scary watching all the mirrors copy the woman as she stands on a mound of broken glass, glaring at the both of you.

“Why are you here? Are you trying to steal my beauty? No, I refuse, you bitch, you think you’re entitled to my belongings because you’re more beautiful than me? I think its my right to take YOURS!” The Witch jumps off the glass pile into a mirror, disappearing from sight.

But you feel your perception of the mirror room change, and find the Witch right behind Jamie.

No, fuck that. You step over to the Witch before she can do anything, and slam your fist into her face.

She goes reeling, clutching at her nose, as you unfold your razor. Jamie watches in something approaching awe as you step to the Witch, taking advantage of its momentary weakness, and cut its head off, letting the body fall to the floor.

You lift the head up, looking at its face. Your first punch had turned it’s angular nose into something looking like Voldemort from the old Harry Potter movies (not the new series, fuck that). Your line of thinking is interrupted as it smiles.

“Ah, interesting. I see. It’s not the girl. It’s you. You want my power.” Finishing its sentence, the head’s smile widens into a grin, lips spreading well past the point they’re meant to go, up to the ears. “I’d like to see you try.”

Even as the head disintegrates, you turn to find the Witch emerging through more mirrors. They begin speaking together, “This is my land, and my home. Here, I can take what’s mine, because the only thing you can see is me. Prepare for your end.”

You step back to Jamie, going back to back with her. “Any plans?” you whisper.

She shakes her head. “T-This is not a low level W-Witch,” she stutters, her eyes darting. “Envy Witches are hard to kill, the hardest. What happened? How do we stop it?”

>>
>>39434571
I guess it depends on how much of a difference passing majorly makes. I wouldn't suggest trying to absorb as much as possible if only because it might make the witch even angrier at us when it notices.
>>
>>39434319

You smile at Jamie. “It’ll be fine. Just give me a few seconds.” You step forward again, approaching one of the Witch’s bodies. She chuckles as you come closer. “You can’t kill me, child, so I think I’ll take your core before you make any more foolish mista-“

As you approach, you feel out the magic around you, and found the strings. All the magic was connected to one figure, one body, hidden underneath the broken glass mound. From her, the magic was pouring out into the various bodies. The eight bodies all had an eighth of her power, which was plenty impressive considering the power of each Witch.

Of course, there’s a flaw with dependent system like this, that all depend on one power source. Just like a floating island, you merely need to cut off the flow, and it all falls down…

You interrupt the Witch as you shove your hand into it, and start drawing. The body attempts to disintegrate to escape, but you keep it going, redirecting the magical energy to turn the Witch into an open breaker, pouring more and more magical energy into your own body. It keeps flowing, an almost endless torrent of power, the Witch screaming in pain as you take its energy faster than it can replenish it.

The power in your body was unlike Maggy’s power: it was sharper, but oily, an Illusion that would fade as soon as you grabbed it. But you keep a hold of it, and once you feel you have it all, you point towards the mound, and let it all go.

(1/2)

>>39434692
Passing major is always better than minor. Minor has some conditions attached, like harm to yourself or others (that aren't your enemy).
>>
>>39434876
Even as the other bodies collapse and turn to ash, you pour out all the energy you stole, feeling it running through your own body, rushing to escape. You feel more than a few strands of power run through your own core, feeling like an engine attempting to turn over, but it doesn’t ignite. You’re not sure whether you should be grateful or sad.

Either way, the only thing left now in the mirror room is the Witch’s true body, holding a single hand mirror. As you approach, she tries to hit you, to claw away your own power, but you grab her arm with your left hand and use your other to slice off the head.

There is no bang, no final scream. You had already taken everything from her. The body slowly dissolves, fading away into the place beyond worlds.

Around you, you can feel the dimension shrinking, starting to collapse without a source of power to sustain it.

Looking around, you manage to spot, underneath the ashes of the Witch, the still intact hand mirror. You pick it up and dust it off, peering in, though find yourself unable to see any reflection. The surface of the mirror looks dark black with an oily sheen. You put it in your equipment bag for later.

Turning around, you find Jamie waiting for you, still with that expression on her face. You wordlessly take her arm and start leading her back to the portal while her mind reboots.

“So you’re saying that you did absolutely nothing on that mission?”

Jamie gulps. “That’s right, ma’am.”

You raise a finger, “…I have three, probably more, points about that. Number one is that Jamie was completely incapacitated by the nature of the Witch. If it weren’t for me, she may have still been stumbling around that dimension.”

You raise a second finger, “next is the fact that it was an Envy Witch, which Jamie tells me is the most powerful. Why would you put a newbie up against that?”

“Thirdly, there was no way that we could get in contact with base for help from within the zone, and with the gate being open and neither of us knowing how to shut it, backing out may have caused problems for the surrounding area, which is a No-Go.”

Before Eliza can say anything more, you pull out the hand mirror. “Oh, and finally, I did find this bitchin’ hand mirror. It survived the death of the Witch, so it’s probably something special. Consider it a gift to you.”

At each point Eliza nodded rather reluctantly, but at your final words her eyes widen, and she looks at the item in your hand. Without pause, it seems to have disappeared from your hands and reappeared in Eliza’s hands, as she begins going over it.

“To detect it, as I said, we need to put you through the Sorceric Concealment Overturn and Undermine Tool. Often people will shield themselves and others from their magic by concealing it. This means they can hide their true level, but also it weakens their own magic in return. If we put you through the Sorceric Concealment Overturn and Undermine Tool, then we can see exactly where you’re at compared to a normal magical girl. Sounds fair?”

"I think you really need an acronym for the Sorceric Concealment Overturn and Undermine Tool."

Eliza nods thoughtfully, rubbing her chin. "Yeah. If only there were an appropriate acronym that formed a word that could be connected to an object that detected people's power levels."

"Yeah."

You both think for a few seconds, before eventually giving it up as futile. But you pick up on another point.

"Hey, also, is it really necessary for me to strip? I mean, maybe my armor might interfere, I can understand that, but my clothing? It just detects magic, right?"

Eliza nods. "That's right."

"So why did you ask me to-"

"Alright, I'll set up the Sorceric Concealment Overturn and Undermine Tool while you get ready, okay?" she turns away from you, tapping on a tablet as a wall slowly folds out, revealing something similar to an MRE machine, except with plenty of magic nodes scattered over it.

You take off your armor, taking some care to fold it up neatly. Wouldn't want to have to iron something like that right away. What setting would you even need for magical clothes?

Being ready, Eliza guides you over to the Sorceric Concealment Overturn and Undermine Tool, and lies you down on the platform next to it, where you'll be rolled through. You take a breath, and get ready.

---

You both stare at the results.

"So, what's a normal human's power level?"

Eliza thinks for a few seconds. "Anywhere from 1 to 100, though it's only past that number that it begins to manifest as magical ability."

"And magical girls?"

"Anything past the threshold, actually. There isn't a hard max that we've found."

"So what exactly does it say about me that my results are ERROR: NUMBER TOO HIGH?"

Eliza shakes her head. "I don't know. I wonder if there's an arbitrary number, possibly in the thousands, at which point the Sorceric Concealment Overturn and Undermine Tool starts to break?"

You both think again. "Nah, that can't be it."

Eliza turns back to you. "Either way, I don't think it's actually detecting your own magic, per se."

You frown. "What do you mean?"

"Well, when you absorb energy, have you ever felt like, you know, you should stop before you explode?"

You think about it. "I...actually don't think so. What does that mean?"

"Well, the Sorceric Concealment Overturn and Undermine Tool may just be detecting your capacity for magic, as opposed to the actual amount of magic you have. That would make sense, since both a magical girl will give the same result whether they're fresh or tired. That may be the case here."

"That makes sense. But what does that mean for me?"

Eliza smiles. "It means you're blatantly overpowered. If it weren't for the fact that you need other people to generate magic for you to steal, and that you can't actually hold onto other people's magic for much longer than it takes to redirect it, you'd probably be a god."

"...Huh."

"Indeed." Eliza starts to put away the Sorceric Concealment Overturn and Undermine Tool. "Well, I think that's enough for tonight. You get some sleep, okay?"

You nod. "Okay then. Thanks, Eliza, for the help."

She smiles, folding away the last part. "No problem! And hey, thanks for the mirror. It'll really help us out, once we figure out its purpose."

You nod, and start to walk away, before stopping. "Uh, hey, Eliza? I don't know when the Sorceric Concealment Overturn and Undermine Tool was last maintained, but maybe it could get a check over? Just in case."

Eliza nods. "Good idea. I can take care of that tonight. See you, Shogo."

"See you, Eliza."

You step outside the room, closing the door behind you, wondering what you should do before sleeping.

Unless we're one of those losers who forgets dreams within the first waking hour (and ours is implied to be recurring, peak our head back in and ask to talk to Eliza about it.

MGs might have better insight on it, since there has to be something poignant to it if we dream it consistently.

And yeah, I know it's too late, but maybe others'll agree it's worth looking into what an outside perspective thinks of it while we have downtime?

"Can we get some of those magically activated det-packs? We had those in Alpha Squadron, and they'd be really fucking helpful now that I'm with you guys.

"Good idea, Shogo. I'll talk to Jax. Anything else?"

You're tempted to tell her about the dreams, but it looks like she's barely staying focused on anything at all. "Nah. Have a nice night."

You leave, and prepare yourself for the next adventure.

Ah, the glory of food! Food is what makes anyone strong, keeps them going through the day, and keeps them from thinking that life is utterly meaningless and they should probably kill themselves to escape from the hell that is real life.

Ah, food!

The grand hall seems much the same as usual, with some Em-Gees practicing near the walls, the flight capable ones hanging out on the rafters, and some groups gathered around a small patch of grass summoned inside the room, having a pseudo-picnic.

You find the kitchen set up against the back wall, supplies all waiting and ready for whoever wants to cook.

You first think of making radioactive waste. Then a delicious sandwich. Finally, you settle on one of your favourite meals: Chicken rice teriyaki, with pineapples.

Grabbing the necessary ingredients and setting them out beforehand, you also set up a pan to fry the rice, rolling around a little bit of olive oil first in the pan so it doesn't stick. After that, you take the whole-grain rice and pour it in, and then adding a little bit of cilantro and some assorted spices you found in the cupboard that smelled a good level of spicy. After a bit, you also add in the teriyaki sauce, and some peas as well.

Leaving the rice to cook for a bit, you also set about cutting up some chicken, and dipping each bit of chicken in some mixed up egg to the side before tossing it in the pan with the rice. You add more teriyaki sauce to the pan.

As the main dish comes to a finish, you add in the pineapple, and also make space for some halloumi cheese that you find. More teriyaki sauce.

Finally, you pull the pan off the stove, and put it all on a plate. Finally, you grab some eating utensils (thankfully they have chopsticks so you don't have to shovel food in like a barbarian), and begin eating.

And you finish. Delicious. You notice several Em-Gees looking over with pleading eyes and watering mouths at some of the last bits of the meal left in the pan.

Cheese, you say? How about quesadillas?

Take a tortilla, put it in a dry frying pan to warm through. Once it's warm, put grated cheese on it. You'll want to use a mixture of cheeses to get the gooey, stringy texture that some have while still getting the flavour that other cheeses have. A good mixture is probably something like mozzarella/parmesan/extra-mature cheddar. Spread the cheese over the tortilla fairly liberally, then turn the heat up to melt the cheese. Don't let the cheese go over the edge of the tortilla, though. Once the cheese is all melted, fold the sides of the tortilla into the middle, then fold the entire thing in half in the other direction (so, fold perpendicular to the existing folds). Serve.

"Hey guys."

They look away from the pan to you. "Hey," they all respond.

"You guys look hungry."

"We are."

"None of you know how to cook?"

They shake their heads. One says, "I'm nine. My mommy never let me touch the stove."

You sigh, and grab a few extra plates to deposit the rest of the meal on. Thankfully you made a large dish.

They rush over as you begin serving, all of them saying thank you before diving in to eat.

"You said you're nine. Aren't there older Em-Gees around to take care of you guys?"

One shakes her head. "Sometimes Eliza will get pizza for us. But they don't know how to cook, either."

"Why does this kitchen exist, then?"

They shrug. "I think it's kinda like waiting for the chosen one to cook for us. People are usually hungry around here, once we eat all the canned foods that are stocked in the shelves."

Huh. So that's why you couldn't find any beans. You also notice that the rest of the hall is looking at you too.

If you want to go extra tasty, try cutting some spring onions (or scallions if you're in the us) fine and adding those with the cheese. Another option is frying mushrooms and adding those, or frying bacon until it's crispy and crumbling it in with the cheese. Grainy mustard would probably also work well, as would Worcestershire sauce. Or you could got absolutely mental and add them all.

It's not a big thing over here. It's generally associated with Arabian foods here (like Moroccan). I had to look cilantro up. I found out that we call it coriander.

Also I'm not personally a big fan of fried onions, which is why I didn't think of them. Jalapenos are a good idea, though.

Tomatoes in a quesadilla? I mean, I get the basic idea of using food ideas from the same region, but I'm not sure whether it would work all that well.

That’s it. This injustice can’t go on for any longer. These poor kids have been forced to live off canned soup and AMERICAN BREAD DEAR GOD for months, if not years! You must save them from this tyranny of culinary oppression! You must show them the LIGHT!

“Girls, you’re my assistants. We’re gonna make some food.”

You quickly get aprons for all the girls, most of them looking marginally silly as the ends of the aprons pool on the floor. You start giving them all jobs, cutting up onions, spring onions, and tomatoes, preparing a jalapeno and habanero sauce (to the Em-Gee that controlled fire, of course) and you turn back to the stoves.

Hero time.

Grabbing several pans, you line them up and start all the burners, keeping them at a warm temperature, enough to melt but not burn. With that, you start lying down tortillas (no time to make your own, unfortunately) and spread a mixture of cheeses on them. As they start to melt, you add a bit more cheese and to some you add bits of beef that you are browning off to the side in another pan, and as they finish melting and cooking you toss in the mixture of the onions and tomatoes, along with a few drops of spicy sauce.

And then you turn to the hall once you have a good stack, the many Em-Gees now all staring at you. You take a breath, and shout “GRAB A PLATE LADIES AND LINE UP FOR DINNER!”

It’s funny how fast Em-Gees can move, even the ones that already move faster than physics should let them, when there’s a promise of fresh, real, proper, just-like-momma’s food.

You start handing out the quesadillas, cooking more until everyone has a few, and eventually when you turn off the final stove there’s not one Em-Gee that didn’t go hungry. Except Marie, who’s glaring at you from the side of the room, but fuck Marie you’re now Cookin’ Mama and you ain’t takin’ shit from anybody. Hmmph.

Alright, so 6PM might become my usual start time on Fridays and Saturdays, but I'll have to start earlier on Sundays if I want delicious sleep. Which I do. So tomorrow may start around 1-2PM Central Time. If you can't make that, you can always catch up on the archives and join us next week.

Central? An hour later for me then.

Eh, I should be around then since it'd be more of a 2-3 hour gap, nap time if necessary.. Take care!

Also someone please save me from these shitty new Captchas.

Yes, Anon, I am you. Get the fuck to sleep, you've still got work to do. And call your mother, she loves you very much and misses you.

Fuck these captchas indeed. At least with word spaghetti I could use tab to go input the characters, and tab+space to hit submit. Now I have to use my fucking mouse. Criminal, I tell you.

Thanks for running!
