Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you chatted with your companions back home, got involved in a altercation with a construct and ultimately befriended said construct.

It is currently the 9th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

Gods above, how many times have you given this speech now? More than any man ought need to in one lifetime, certainly. “I'm afraid I have some bad news for you. The Hiacian and Rhynian Empires collapsed. The Rhynians collapsed more than a thousand years ago, and the Hiacians only a century or so later. Nobody is entirely sure what caused the collapse of the Rhynian Empire. Some say civil war, others disease, and yet others claim it was the will of the gods which destroyed the Rhynians. As for the Hiacians, they tried to revive a god and paid the price.”

There is a long silence before the golem finally responds, its voice emotionless and alien. “That is not possible. There was no reason for the Empire to collapse. The Empire was united under the glory of the Emperor. The Empire achieved several victories against the Hiacian barbarians. What you claim is not possible.”

You shrug your shoulders, uncaring. “I'm afraid not only was it possible, it happened. The lands of the former Rhynian Empire are divided among hundreds of petty warlords vying for dominance. The largest successor state is the Kingdom of Aleamond, though I'm uncertain how Rhynian it truly is. It shuns all magic and instead relies solely on technology. Hiacian lands are divided between the Shahdom of El-Amin and Samrajya of Kulkarni.”

The creature is once more silent for an uncomfortably long stretch before finally replying. “Do you offer any proof that the Empire has collapsed?”

You raise an eyebrow. “What proof could I offer that you have not seen yourself? The ruined Rhynian facility you woke up in. Every Rhynian facility across the world is in a similar state of disrepair. If you'd like, you may travel with me and see the truth of my statements. I tend to see quite a number of them, in my line of work.”
(1/2)
>>
While waiting for the creature to respond you find yourself wondering why it's so slow. Does it need to select its answers from some vast list of possible responses? Pick out each individual word? Finally it speaks. “Very well. I will travel with you to determine the validity of the statement: The Rhynian Empire has collapsed. I follow you for no other reason. Please release me.”

You flick your wrist, the ice encasing the golem melting away in an instant. It moves each of its limbs experimentally, presumably ensuring that no damage has been done. You decide to pose a question. “What were you called?”

This time its response is prompt. “Mens Artificialis Regulus. I am the third edition, thirteenth revision of Regulus' mind.”

Artificial mind, eh? If you recall correctly Fulvia called herself a 'fabricated guardian'. You wonder if this Regulus fellow was made by the same creator, or if this was an attempt at imitation? Perhaps something else entirely? “I will call you Regulus. Now, help me track down my guar.”

It takes you a good half hour to catch your guar, but eventually you manage it. As you pull yourself into the saddle, Regulus speaks. “I estimate that this creature can achieve a maximum of fifteen miles per hour overland. My own speed cannot exceed eight miles per hour overland. I recommend that you do not exceed that pace should you wish to take advantage of my abilities.”

>You were actually just planning on setting camp, ask him to help you clear away some of the grass.

You peer out over the seemingly endless sea of grass, trying to get an idea of just where you are. You can vaguely make out the dip in the horizon where the road cut through the grass, so it shouldn't be too hard to find your way back come morning. Safe in the knowledge that you're not lost, you turn your attention to Regulus once more. “I was actually about to set camp. Would you help me clear out some of this grass so I can set up my tent?”

Regulus stares at you in silence for a time and then, without a word, turns away from you and thrust his hand forward. You feel a pulse of vys, but it's oddly distorted. It seems to twist itself apart as it expands, almost like a net spreading out across a pond. Then there is a muffled click and the area seems to drain of color, becoming somehow lifeless and dead despite the fact that nothing had obviously changed.

Then fire starts spewing from Regulus' outstretched hand. You're very nearly thrown from your guar's back as he scorches away a vast swathe of grass in front of him, turning his body slowly in an arc to spread the fire evenly. It's fortunate that the grass here is healthy and green, otherwise the blaze might have expanded beyond your ability to control. Channeling your own vys you extinguish the blaze with a thought. You've got to give Regulus credit for efficiency if nothing else. The field of fine ash he's created will make for a fine, if very filthy, campsite.

Regulus turns to face you once more. “I have cleared an area of sufficient size for one person to make camp.” His voice seems somehow more distorted than it was previously, though that may simply be a trick of perception.

You slide yourself out of the saddle, dropping to the ground next to him. “I had intended for you to use less... well, less violent means I suppose I should say. This ash is going to get on everything, I can already tell.” You reach into your cloak, pulling out a neatly bundled tent with some mild difficulty.

Whilst setting yourself to the task of erecting your tent, you decide to find out a little bit more about your traveling companion. “Anyway, why don't you tell me a little bit about your capabilities Regulus? I suppose it's fairly obvious that you're capable of magic, what else can you do? What was that pulse of vys that I felt right before you cast that Fire spell? What can you tell me of Rhynian facilities in the area?”

Regulus stares at you in silence as you work. “I am Mens Artificialis Regulus, Third Edition, Thirteenth Revision. I was created to address the failings of the Facitus Custos line of constructs. I differ from other constructs primarily in my ability to learn. However, as a result of my design I am unable to switch from one body to another without undergoing extensive maintenance.”

There is another long uncomfortable silence. You've very nearly managed to get your tent figured out, though you're still struggling with getting all the poles assembled. Finally Regulus resumes speaking. “I have been implanted with a wide ranging knowledge of combat both unarmed and with a variety of weapons. Because of the limitations in my design I am unable to gather vys as living creatures do. Instead I draw vys from my surroundings immediately before casting. I am required to use all excess vys that I gather immediately or it causes me issues.”

He goes on to list the Rhynian facilities in the area, but he doesn't tell you anything you didn't already know. You already knew about them due to that map you found in Longia. He does state that the mountains are honeycombed with other, unmarked facilities like the one he awoke in, but because they're unmarked he's unable to tell you where they reside exactly.
(2/3)
>>
You've finally managed to get your tent set up, though you're covered from head to toe in thick black ash. You're going to need to wash yourself off at some point in the near future, at least douse yourself in water and run some through your clothes. You'd do it now, but if you're going to be staying the night here you'd just get covered in it again.

GUYS

GUYS

WE PAIR UP REGULUS WITH SKULL KID

SK develops a portable recharging vys source and performs augmentations to Regulus, as well as maintenance with Fulvia's help.

Regulus works as a sort of contractor in recovering Rhynian tech and restoring facilities, Fulvia acts as overseer for Operation: Restore Rhynia. Isn't this just hype?
>>
>>39424846
Soma intended that, but what was quoted doesn't actually imply that.
Maybe if it had been "ability to learn mundane and magical skills to a great degree" then you could argue for it, but since it was brought up as an example of differences between the hardcoded AI, it just said that he can learn like any human can, not that he has the potential to go GM.

It's actually probably more time efficient to host the vote later rather than doing it now. If I hosted it now it would take me a fucking assload of time to type up the post because I'd be trying to do so much in a single post. Not to mention I wouldn't be able to start writing until after the vote concluded. The alternative is hosting it at the end of this next post, which will ultimately save time.
>>
Ya'know, since Fulvia is hooked up to the brooch network pretty much 24/7, it wouldn't be a bad idea to contact her and ask her about this Regulus chap. He seems nice enough, but you never know.

You reach into your cloak, extracting a stick of jerky which you've had in your cloak... well, only the Gods know how long. Whilst gnawing on the tough meat, you decide to pick Regulus' mind a bit. “What do you know of these Facitus Custos? I've had some passing contact with them.” Perhaps traveling with one for a little more than a month is more than passing contact, but you're still not sure you trust this thing.

There is the usual long silence is Regulus processes your request. “Facitus Custos are produced under the operational name of 'Fulvia'. Each Fulvia is a unique construct, as Facitus Custos are all failed attempts at recreating a specific woman's personality. Their creator is, or was, an Elven man who goes by the name of Mastorema. This is most likely simply a pseudonym, as it translates to Tinker in the Elven dialect. The woman he attempts to recreate is his human wife, who died approximately one thousand six hundred years ago. It is likely that, if Rhynia has truly fallen, Mastorema has since died. Facitus Custos are notoriously untrustworthy and conniving, however this stereotype is not necessarily deserved. Each one is, as previously stated, a unique entity.”

There's another long pause and you're about to ask another question when Regulus resumes speaking. “Facitus Custos are created through an intricate process of layered enchantments on the medium of crystallized vys. Crystallized vys has the unique properties of preserving runes carved into its surface even after it has been melded together with other sheets of crystallized vys."

(1/2)
>>
"This crystallized vys is created via traditional spell casting, by carefully weaving strands of vys together such that once given form a glass-like sheet is created. It is also an incredibly conductive material for vys, as one may expect. By layering extremely thin sheets of this crystallized vys, each one bearing a different enchantment, on top of one another a gem is formed with a number of unique properties, including the ability to warp reality. It is these gems which hold the mind of a Facitus Custos unit.”

You suppose one benefit of not needing to stop and take a breath is the ability to lecture endlessly. Even if he's not the quickest wit, Regulus certainly seems to have a gift for talking one's ear off. At least the information he's providing you is interesting. He seems finished, so you pose him another question. “Assume that I am correct and the Rhynian Empire has collapsed, what are your plans going forward? What will you do with yourself?”

For the longest time Regulus doesn't answer, you think for a moment that he's ignoring you, but finally he speaks. “There is a facility beneath the Imperial Palace which links to a number of Rhynian colonies elsewhere. I will seek these colonies out in the hopes of finding some true remnant. That is of course assuming that the facility in question is still functional. If it is not, I will seek to repair it. If that is impossible, I will be forced to declare myself Emperor and consolidate whatever states control the heartland into an empire once again.”

You nod your head slowly, taking that in. You can only hope this facility he seeks is still functional. Otherwise there may be a new warlord on the scene in the very near future. “Well, I suppose a man must have a goal. If you'll excuse me, I think I'll take some time to meditate.”

Regulus says nothing, so you simply duck into your tent and seal the entrance before sitting down cross legged on the cloth with covers the bottom of the tent.

>“Facitus Custos are created through an intricate process of layered enchantments on the medium of crystallized vys. Crystallized vys has the unique properties of preserving runes carved into its surface even after it has been melded together with other sheets of crystallized vys."

No. Every idea we'd consider "racist" today originated in European academia during the Scientific Revolution. Well, okay. That's not quite true. Segregation has its roots in even the earliest of human states. As long as we've been building cities we've been segregating groups of people from one another. Even before we were building cities, in more complex hunter/gatherer and early agrarian communities we still practiced some degree of segregation.

The producers won't let the women fail. They'll find things they need washed up on the beach or get secret help. The producers have already admitted they placed a rubber lined pond on the women's island filled with water. Anyone who has watched the show has seen many ways the women are being helped that the men are not. Despite this, the women are still fucking up but they'll just use to in order to make the women's sudden "discovery" of survival instincts that much of a bigger deal. We already saw with the Iranian girl that they're willing to take women off the island, give them supplies, and send them back. The fix is in.

You reach out via the brooches for Fulvia. You feel a vast, alien presence at the edge of your consciousness. It's not at all like when you try to contact any of your other companions. {I've encountered another intelligent construct in my travels. He calls himself Mens Artificialis Regulus. Apparently he's the thirteenth revision of the second edition? I don't really know if that's particularly important. Do you know anything about him that I might benefit from? He attacked me, but I subdued him and he doesn't seem overly hostile now.}

Fulvia responds immediately, quite unlike Regulus. You wonder if she's simply more efficient or smarter or something of that nature? {The Mens Artificialis were created to replace military leadership in our wars with Hiacia. It was believed that if we could simply create a construct which had the ability to learn we might finally completely conquer the Hiacians and destroy your people once and for all, or at least your people's cultural identity, once and for all.}

{They would not necessarily be soldiers, but rather strategist. There was also the possibility of using them as assassins to eliminate enemy leadership. The project was declared a failure and scrapped, as the Regulus units were loathe to correctly follow orders. We could not devise a way to rob them of their free will and so they were useless to us.}

You can't help but find that just a little bit cold. Merely because they couldn't be bent to their intended purpose they were consigned to rot for all eternity in storage? {How long before the collapse was that?}

The alien presence at the edge of your consciousness seems to swell larger an instant before Fulvia responds. {If I have dated the collapse correctly, it happened roughly forty years before the collapse of Rhynia.}

Somewhat hesitantly you reach out to Fulvia once more. {Do you think I can trust this Regulus, then?}

{No more than you can trust Chryssa or Darzi or Profectus. It is a being with free will. If it so chooses it could attempt to kill you in your sleep. Only I am incapable of causing you direct physical harm in any way, shape, or form. If you think that this Regulus construct seems trustworthy, then I would recommend that you follow your judgment.}

With that the connection is severed. You're not entirely sure what to think of your new traveling companion, after that conversation. Sure he seems amicable enough, but he was quite literally built to destroy your people. Regardless, you have more important things to worry about. Namely, improving your control of the magical arts.

Reaching into your cloak you extract the metal codex and flip the the page which had displayed the face of Dhatu the last time you'd tried channeling vys into the tome. Laying your palm flat against the page you channel vys into the gilded pages, and unlike last time as the ink flows from the page to thread itself through the air you're presented not with the stoic face of a god, but by a small golden sphere.

The sphere twist slowly in the air, a silver disk slowly forming around this golden core. Black ink begins to spell out letters across the silver disk, allowing you to read as it spins. It seems to be remarking upon the nature of the soul as the source of vys, rather than vys being naturally occurring. The soul, according to the text, is Surya's gift to the creatures of the world. He tore off a piece of his divine self and implanted it into the bodies of all living creatures so that they might all know some modicum of divinity.

The result was, of course, magic entering the world and allowing mortals to challenge the gods and their children for dominion over the world. Pani sought She Who Was Banished in the hopes that she might shed some light on what the future holds for the gods, and the knowledge unveiled prompted both Prthvi and Pani to join forces in the hopes of punishing Surya for his misdeeds. Dhatu, in his infinite wisdom, sought to remain neutral in the conflict.

Prthvi and Pani managed to subdue and enslave Surya, ensuring that never again would he be able to act independently of Pani's will. It's said that it is Pani who declares that the sun must rise every day and set every evening. It is Pani who allows mortals to harness fire and call upon the forces of magic.

Srsti grew suspicious of Prthvi, her lover, after the battle and in a fit of jealousy she slew him. Pani, with the might of Surya at her beck and call, captured Srsti and condemned her to wander endlessly the space between the stars, forbidding her to interact with anyone or anything on pain of death. Dhatu, in his infinite wisdom, had once again stayed out of the conflicts between the gods. The text doesn't actually state whether or not Prthvi and Pani had some sort of illicit affair, but logic would state that if Srsti could see the future she could probably see her lover sleeping with another woman.

Turning the page you find that the ink shifts. The silver comes to take on the shape of a man sitting cross-legged with the golden orb sitting in his chest. He reaches inside of himself and breaks off a piece of the golden orb, placing it inside where his mouth should be. The golden orb begins to diffuse through his head, turning slowly from gold to iron. Eventually the piece the figure had broken off of its 'soul' has been transmuted entirely into a dull grey halo of iron surrounding his head.

Turning the page you find that the ink shifts once more. It almost seems as if the figure's head has become the focus. It's grown huge, as has the iron halo surrounding it, while the rest of his body has vanished. Black ink begins to assault the edge of the iron halo, but it can't manage to reach the silver protected with in. Gold text begins to scrawl across the surface of the iron halo, shedding some light on what the text is trying to illuminate.

The golden lettering scrawling across the iron surface of the halo claims that the ultimate defense against outside influence is gained by channeling the soul itself rather than vys. It can be difficult, as it entails transmuting the substance of the soul via the magic of Dhatu into something resembling vys, without transforming it into vys. Unfortunately the text gives you no more than that to work with.

As you turn to the next page, you're met once again with an image of Dhatu. However, this is not the same image you first saw. Where as in all other instances Dhatu has been depicted as masculine, here he is clearly feminine. This female version of Dhatu turns her head towards you, face an emotionless mask, and then the book slams itself shut.

You're left at something of a loss for words, but gathering your wits you set about sinking into a deep trance. You wish to attempt this soul transmutation the book has shown you.

Hmm, interesting.
Since the other gods are presumably 2 males and 2 females, and Dhatu is the thematically neutral one so far, could he, as a deity of death, be agender/hermaphrodite/whateveryoucallit?
And we also got a new perspective on Surya's enslavement, looks like Pani isn't the all-loving mother we knew her as, and Surya isn't the ever burning maw of hate.

You sink deeper and deeper into your trance, clearing your mind of all extraneous thought. As the burning core of your soul fades into view you note with some curiosity that Regulus seems to have dozens of souls. Each component that makes up his body has its own, individual soul much smaller than a soul normally would be. Unlike yours, his are blue.

You're familiar with this phenomena from your previous forays into enchanting, every enchanted object has a soul which is blue rather than some shade of golden yellow or red or, evidently, green. What's odd is that so many individual enchantments have gone into the crafting of Regulus. You would have expected the Rhynians to be more efficient in their construction of something, or rather someone, like Regulus.

You also note with some mild curiosity that Regulus also has an actual soul as well deep within his abdomen. You can barely make it out, but there is undoubtedly golden light shining from somewhere within him. You wonder how the Rhynians managed that enchanting feat.

Turning your attention once more to your own soul you use Earth magic to erode a portion of your soul away, allowing you to detach a portion of your soul. It's difficult to work with initially but you find that a simple manipulate spell allows you to move it about. It quickly forms itself into an individual sphere, the color slowly draining from it. You senses feel dulled and your mind sluggish, but you recall that the figure had eaten his own soul and that had somehow allowed him to transmute it into that iron halo.

You move the small ball shorn off of your own soul into your mouth, or at least where you think your mouth ought to be. You have an innate sense of your own body, but it's still somewhat difficult. You feel yourself drawn slowly towards consciousness as the piece of your soul draws nearer your own head. However, rather than awaken from your trance you feel as though trapped on the very edge of wakefulness. Your body is paralyzed but your thoughts are racing.

Every aspect of your mind seems somehow enhanced. You think faster, your ideas seem almost divinely inspired, the world seems for a moment a very simple place. You feel as though you could formulate an answer for any conceivable problem without much difficulty at all. The sluggishness you felt after tearing off a piece of your very soul has vanished, replaced by an intellectual vigor you've never felt before.

Channeling vys you instinctively know what you ought to do. You rip apart the piece of your soul, wrapping its individual strands around yourself as if it were some sort of protective cocoon. At some point over the course of you ripping it apart and weaving it together the piece of your soul shifts, taking on new properties. It turns from golden yellow to a dull, lifeless grey. The energy which had suffused you fades now that you've put it to use.

Even though you've managed to transmute a piece of your soul into some substance other than vys, you note that your actual cocoon, the defense you've erected against outside influences, is full of gaps and holes. The fabric of this new material you've created is frayed and loose, as if it may fall apart at any moment. Clearly, you'll need to put in more work before you're ready to try your hand at actually applying this technique.

Your eyes snap open as you conclude your meditation. Your body feels refreshed, not at all how you were expecting it to feel. Usually after manipulating your soul you feel horrible for the rest of the day. Perhaps a benefit gained by not forcing a piece of your soul into a foreign object? You're not sure.

Light shines through the canvas of your tent, so you assume it's morning. You're probably about a full day's ride from Khmedi, perhaps spilling over into tomorrow.

>>

Yeah, we probably should.
>>
>>39429397
I kinda like having a 'nuclear' option to be honest.
I mean if we are ever in a really bad spot we can pull out the sword and threaten to vaporize everything in the surrounding area.
>>
>>39429513
the problem with the nuclear option is that people need an example before they take it seriously
>>
>>39429397
We could always do it while we're experimenting with the tattoos

>Spend Vys
>Examine Marks closely
>Copy them onto paper

>Observe
>>
>>39429542
Any vatis should be able to realize that there is a shitton of vys stored in that sword though.
>>
>>39429513
Yeah, but our nuke is unstable and about to blow its top right now. Why risk that when we've got something about infinite capacity. This is a no brainer. Sword is a precision device that we're busting to the gills. Crown is a more blunt instrument that works just as well for this purpose.
>>
>>39429513
We can probably keep it at a reasonable level (can be safely handled outside of cloak)
so that if another dragon comes by we can vaporize it.

>madness stop interfering.
>>
>>39429397

Will Soma be going through some of the ideas (or rather tell us to choose a set number of 'projects') from that huge list of experiments/ideas/etc, when we eventually do the timeskip that (IIRC) will be happening when we get unbanished?
>>
Banished 2: Samjan Boogaloo.
>>
>>39429962
I assume timeskip won't be RIGHT AFTER we get unbanished.

I'm sure that when we put it on, we can make sure that we don't keep it on all the time, making sure we take it off every day or so.

Soma only confirms that it only contains emotions, so that means only when our insanity would act up, which it rarely does.

Not when airships are multiple time faster than water ships.
And this is of importance because, it leads us to the more direct way to a location.
And most importantly, as we come from a family of merchants, all these things become extremely important.
One ride of the air ship with us on boardWe BUY ALL THE LUMBER and throw it into our cloak we will destroy markets.
Eventually build fleets of ships with our materials. And selling tons of shit.
Bring Thad with us, and buy him any and all materials he wants/needs. We can turn el Armin into the most advanced city in the world.
With a time skip. We would easily be able to finance wars. And topple kingdoms.
Of course our family would rise in power. And give us the option to make other bigger cities with our wealth and knowledge with out relying on enchants. So we don't get smited by the gods.

You decide to head out in search of a wild guar. Supposedly they're fairly docile creatures even when they've been raised in the wild. How hard could it be to tame one as a mount for Regulus? You channel nature magic, spreading your senses into the world around you. You find that your range is limited. You can sense Regulus, his intelligence vast and alien. Your guar is a stark contrast, a simple minded creature quite excited to be eating grass.

Pumping more vys into your spell you expand your mind further and further outwards, until you feel it brush against the thoughts of another, simpler mind which, quite like your own guar, is primarily concerned with its next meal. There seems to be a whole herd of them, six or seven animals.
>Vys Pool: (42/52)
>Spell cost 4 vys, spent 6 of the extra vys you'll be spending

Pushing yourself to your feet you undo the buttons sealing your tent shut and climb outside. It's a beautiful morning, a cool breeze stirs the grass and the sun shines brightly in a cloudless sky. Well, that's not entirely true. You do note a column of thick, black smoke on the horizon, its origin somewhere to the southeast of you and more east than south. A touch forboding considering your destination lies in the same direction, but it's probably simply a brush fire.

You take a moment to pull down your tent and tuck it into your cloak, trusting Ricky to clean it of ash and other such detritus. Your guar stands only a few feet away. It's managed to clear out a fairly vast ring around the camp from its eating alone. Regulus stands stock still, merely watching you. You wonder if he moved at all during the night or if he merely stood there.

You purse your lips together and blow, a shrill note piercing the quiet of the morning. Your guar jerks its head up, turning its body slowly and lumbering its way over to you. You pat it, or rather her, affectionately on the nose before hauling yourself up into the saddle. “Regulus, there's a pack of wild guar about a mile to the north. We're going to track them down and I'm going to catch one to serve as your mount. You do know how to ride a guar, don't you?”

There is a long pause, as per usual, before he speaks. “I am aware of the theory of riding a guar if not the practice. I was implanted with the knowledge upon my creation however I have never attempted to use said knowledge. Do keep in mind that I am significantly heavier than a human or one of your kind and will likely require a strong guar to carry me.”

You wave a hand dismissively. How hard could it possibly be to train an animal? “Wait here, I'll be back in a few hours at most. Then we can set off.”

You dig your heels into your guar's flanks before Regulus can say anything, the guar setting off at an even trot towards the north where you recall detecting the herd of beast. It's only a few minutes of riding before you hear the animals stomping through the grass and grunting to one another. Channeling vys once more, your senses expand. It's difficult but you manage to assess that the largest and most likely strongest guar is furthest from you. You can't tell if it's male or female.

You loop your guar around the herd so that you can get near to the biggest guar and then slip out of your saddle, whispering a command to your own mount to stay put. She sets immediately to munching on the grass around her, the glutton. Regardless you stalk forward, the grass obscuring your advance. You very nearly fall into the beast jaws as it opens its mouth to tear at the stalks of grass you're hiding in. Instead you fall backwards, succeeding only in spooking the herd.

(2/4)
>>
As the guar bolts, you grow desperate. Reaching out with nature magic you force your thoughts into its mind with relative ease. You urge the guar to remain still, while blinding it with an illusion. Well, you're not really sure it can be called an illusion if you're simply preventing any light from reaching its eyes but it's relying on the principles of illusion.

The guar slows to a halt and you climb on top of it with some difficulty. It's roughly the same size as the guar you bought. It seems calm enough as you situate yourself, but the moment you stop blinding it the guar panics. It bolts for the relative safety of the grass even as you flood its mind with a sense of calm. You're forced to cling to the creatures neck just to avoid falling off. Eventually the guar relaxes and allows you to steer it about. It's difficult to do so without a set of reins, but you manage.

You guide the guar you caught back to the guar you bought, which still sits eating away at the grass. Both are female, and neither seems to particularly care about the other. You urge your guar to follow before turning towards the south and spurring on your captured guar.

The trip back to the camp takes slightly longer than the trip out to the herd but it still only takes you a few minutes at a good clip. Regulus stands exactly as you left him, waiting for you. You dismount carefully, the task of riding bareback having left you aching and sore. If sitting for hours in a saddle was bad, sitting without one for even a few minutes was worse. “Well, here she is. Climb up and lets see if you'll be able to manage.”

>>
>>39432434
>it's probably simply a brush fire
Yeah, of course.
>>
Regulus nods his head, walking stiffly towards the captured animal. He stares at it for a long while before grabbing one of the broad leathery plates on the guar's back by the edge and hauling himself upwards. The beast lets out a confused growl, but doesn't attempt to bite Regulus as he struggles to situate himself atop the animal. Once he's finally sitting astride his mount, he kicks his heels into its sides and with surprising ease navigates the animals using only his knees and hips.

You watch as Regulus takes a few swift laps around the clearing before spurring your own guar towards the road. You really need to think up a name for your mount. Soon you're both trundling along the road, you enjoying a meal of hardtack, jerky, and dried fruit while Regulus merely stares at the column of smoke in the distance.

Your plan to hold a book steadier whilst riding on the back of an animal is to attach the book directly to said animal that you're riding? That would be counterproductive.

Making shit float is Manipulate's job. You can hold something that only weights a few pounds in the air for two minutes per point of vys using manipulate.
>>

That would eat through vys even faster, in addition to making it impossible to turn the page without unfreezing the book. I mean, I guess you could rig it up so that only the binding of the book is frozen but then it would be even more difficult to hold in mid air and require even more vys to maintain.

>>

>>39433286
You don't know the runes to create such a device and it would take weeks or perhaps months of testing to get the force such that you don't simply send books rocketing off into the stratosphere.

>>39433335

>>
>>39433335
O god. I just had an image of a library of books flying about. Going to and fro from each shelf.

>>
>>39433335
Actually, I've been thinking, do we even really need runes for enchanting? Just like how the not!runes are used as focus points for learning new spells, can't we just leave out the rune from the process and straight up manipulate the threads of reality directly for the result we want?

Thanks for finally confirming it.
But I meant stabilizing the threads as well. There are, after all, enchanted items with no visible runes.
Also, this means we can do more kinds of magic then you've implied, like using an intangibility word/aspect or something, no? Because that'd be posisble with runes, I assume, so it should be possible with magic as well if enchanting is just stabilized magic.

>>
>>39433518
Because actual flight>flying carpet.
Why haven't we developed a technique to fly, or at levitate levitate yet?
>>
>>39433494
>>39433525
Grab the threads
Wrap them around the cover of the book

and then attach them to the threads in the air, put a contain rune around both of them.

Boom.

Try shit so you know shit.
Don't use an expensive book.... actually just try a rock
Don't have to use permanence or anything, just try somn.

>>39433562
Eh, the blanket was fine.
We'll be fine.
>>
>>39433562
>>39433525
We totally do know how to figure out new runes. All we have to do is figure out the threads of reality that correspond to certain objects and tear them out to see what shapes they make.

For instance, if we see a lit candle we could sink down to the threads place and tear out the piece that corresponds to the fire. Then we'd have a candle that never burns and we'd learn the rune for fire.
>>
>>39433603
We knew what we were doing with the blanket, we knew the runes were real and what they meant.
It's not even close to just making up runes.
>>
>>39433562
First off being retarded has made us alot of money and learned alot of things. Just saying
>>
>>39433607
I'm 90% sure that's not how it works.
Besides, you can't just tear out threads willy-nilly without consequences, like reality unraveling.
>>
>>39433603
Yeah, we knew the runes for the blanket anon, that's like giving a bike mechanic some jet parts and telling him to make a jet
>>
>>39433630
I'm just talking about reality thread sewing nigga

Make shit up, we're not trying to create a fire or create anything, just use whats there and guess.

This isn't even half as crazy as the stuff we do on a regular basis, like eroding our damn soul to go hang out in the void.
>>
>>39433656
We could just fill it in with stuff and things
>>
>>39433660
Through trial and error he'd probably get that jet made.
Eventually.

Probably wouldn't be a very good jet, but we don't need a good jet, we need a shitty book flight enchant to last a few hours.
>>
>>39433656
Actually we CAN
We know this because the master at our party said he'd been doing that

And he's fine
He was tearing them up and mucking with them trial and error, he's totally ok(maybe a bit more crazy)
>>
>>39433732
that is true but pulling dozens of the threads of reality may be a bad thing, specially if it is from the same object
>>
>>39433705
He'd sooner blow himself up if he ever tested it.
>>39433732
He literally entered the Void.
He's not fine, he was just lucky he didn't get taken as an afternoon snack by some Void entity.
You realize there was a reason we told him not to do that, right?
>>
Guy's they're THREADS in the FABRIC of reality. Pluck a single thread in your shirt and there won't be much damage. There's only a problem created if you tear a hole in it or pick at the fabric until it's threadbare.
>>
>>39433607
As I said we don't know many runes beside what contain? and two others?

That's why we don't experiment and make more
>>
>>39433779
Yes but my point is /he's been messing with the threads for a long time/ I'd wager he's been mucking with them from long before he actually entered the void.

The dangers in your objection are from the void side, and even so we are in an advantageous position to handle those issues.

>>39433774

Holes in reality aren't as worrisome as you think.
Especially seeing as a city of vatis have been living with them around for who knows how long and have collectively given no shits.

Besides, we aren't trying to tear holes, we're just manipulating threads.

PLUS know a momentary removal of a thread isn't reality threatening, as we had to do that to enchant the blanket anyway.

The only way we can realistically fuk this up is if we try to do very complicated things, and the experiment suggested is not complicated.
It's actually a less complicated process than the enchanting we've done previously.

Once you've finished your breakfast you spur your guar into a brisk jog, a pace which the animal should be able to keep up for hours without difficulty. The journey is mostly peaceful. You make occasional conversation with Regulus but he's honestly a terrible conversationalist. He'll answer your questions, sure, but he'll rarely ask any of his own. He did seem curious about why you were going to Khmedi, but you just told him there was a task you needed to accomplish for a friend and left it at that.

You slowed only for lunch, which consisted mostly of jerky, dried fruit, bread, and water. At least with magic you can chill the water, it comes out of the void lukewarm. You would really imagine the void to be a cold place but on the contrary it's neither hot nor cold. There's no air, nor is there any real sense of temperature. It's a strange place.

By the time you've finished lunch the column of smoke on the horizon has mostly vanished, though smaller columns have taken its place. You're not sure if they're campfires, or perhaps remnants of whatever blaze caused that huge column, but you're relieved regardless. Hopefully it means you won't have to ride through an inferno or battle a dragon or something like that.

Digging your heels once more into your guar's flanks you ride hard along the last stretch of your journey. You're riding along the vast cliff face which marks this side of the vast northern mountains. Well, you suppose they're the southern mountains from where you're standing now. You wonder why this side of the mountains is just one massive cliff. Was it something the Rhynians did, or maybe the Hiacians? It certainly doesn't seem natural.

You pass the collapsed remnant of the guard tower where you first met Chrys. You fondly recall your encounter with her here, when you found her skinning that weird creature she called a 'boar'. She had called you camel fucker, if you recall correctly. She'd thought it was some sort of honorable form of address at the time. You wonder who taught her Samjan? Probably merchants passing through Khmedi, or maybe her father. She certainly picked it up quickly.

It took several hours on foot to make the journey from here to Khmedi, but on the back of a guar the trip takes less than an hour. It isn't long before the great stone spire on which Khmedi sits fades into view, the sight of the village leaving you for a moment in shock. The walls have been torn apart, giant gaps torn through the thick stone fortifications. The bridge has collapsed into the gorge below. The village itself is a blackened husk, only the stone buildings which made up the homes of the wealthy were left standing, and there weren't many of those left either. They had been crushed as if by some great weight.

At first, you think that there must have been some sort of siege. Khmedi must have been sacked by some enemy or another. Then you see a pair of wings stretch from the caved in roof of what you think is the Executioner's home. A great dragon, forty feet tall at the least and covered in scales which gleam like steel in the fading light of the sun, rears itself back on its hind legs and lets out a roar which even where you're standing is still deafening. A jet of flame spewed forth from its mouth, blanketing the vast structure of the Executioner's home in its entirety before the dragon came crashing down to its feet. After a delay of a few seconds you hear a dull thud echo across the plains.

Well, seems your work's probably been done for you.

We give Reggie the sword and tell him the dragon killed the emperor. Then we leave.
>>

Grandmasters of fire mate. Plus, we can't speak Dragon. we don't smell like a dragon, and we certainly can't sound like a dragon.

>>39434597
I really like this plan.
>>
>>39434607
What are you talking about Anon, we're clearly a weird looking dragon
Our son told us so.

Whats our strongest attack anyway
We need to make up some cool attacks.
>>
>>39434607
My original idea was just to leave, but we have the overcharged sword and a not at all endearing robot

She wants her husband dead.
>>
>>39434401
That's not a dragon.
>>
>>39434970
The great thing about making your own setting is that you can call anything a dragon.
>>
>>39434983
Soma, can you answer this?
>>39430933
>>
>>39434552
Keep in mind that this dragon won't have its sense of smell obfuscated by the pleasant ministrations of sulfur and smoke as it was in the mines of Longia.

Although perhaps it's just really convenient that Soma has us already covered in soot...

Why didn't we just stuff MARTETR in the cloak instead of wasting time taming a guar?

SOMA ITS TIME TO TEST OUR MIGHT!
>>
>>39430933
>>39434994
I haven't really given it much thought, if I'm being honest Anon. Presumably they're about... well, hang on.

A Samjan can be at most 80% as strong as the strongest human.

A Samjan can have 150% of the endurance of the world's... toughest human? Basically he's 1.5 Nigerians or whatever.

Speed is probably something like 120% or 110%.

>>
>>39435226
If we used the runes of: fire, large, create, and reenforce could we make say a wand that shoots fire?
>>
>>39435238
