You are Clarissa, a high-school student, Kimiko's Substitute Shinigami and Karakura Town's spiritual balancer and protector.

You awake to your brother's incessant knocking on the door of your room. You lift yourself up with a groan, though not with nearly as much of a delay as it usually takes you in the morning. Well, today, you really don't feel like letting a single minute go to waste.

But you still feel like crap. The nightly patrols just don't leave enough time for you to sleep. Even if tonight's rest was really pleasant, there just wasn't enough of it. And it's made even worse by this kind of awakening. Paul just keeps going like a freaking woodpecker.

You rub the sleep out of your eyes and get off your bed. You give your door a good return slam, and Paul promptly cuts it out. He probably gets that you're up now. You put on your school uniform and get your bag ready.

Kimiko's still lying around. It's kind of surprising, since she's always been the first one to get up.

"It's morning, Kimiko," You tell her, but she curls up into a ball and hides under the blanket. You put a foot on her and shake her. "Get up, you lazy bum. I know it's annoying to go to school six times a week, but we don't have a choice. Heck, didn't you say you wanted to go?"

Muffled whining finally comes from underneath the futon as you start to shake harder. "I want to sleep some more..."

You keep rubbing your heel on her, and with a groan, the girl finally crawls out. You decide against sticking around and looking at her change, because that'd be pretty weird, and go downstairs to have breakfast.

The breakfast - omelet and riceballs, as usual - is cooling on the table. Paul greets you with one of his strict frowns.

"A lot of money went missing from the emergency fund our father left us for the summer. Do you have anything to say about that?"

Shit. He found out, and you can't just tell him that you had to pay off a spiritual psychopath in order to save a dying friend.

...

"Something happened to a friend of mine, and... I had to pay for her. Her, uh, medical bill, I mean. It was something really embarrassing, so I had to help without anyone knowing. You know?"

Paul glares at you with unabashed suspicion and fury, carefully scrutinizing and wordlessly reprimanding the half-truth you blurted out. After a pause that lasts for at least a minute, during which he silently fumes and scowls, Paul lets out a sigh. He doesn't yell at you like you expected him to, he doesn't berate you like your dad would, he even quits it with trying to stare you down into feeling remorse for your wrongdoing - he just sighs, looking hopelessly defeated.

It's not the reaction you were waiting for, and it actually makes you feel a little bad for him.

"Did you need to buy something, Paul?" You ask him, kind of humbly and hesitantly. Your brother shakes his head. "What do you need the money for, then?"

"It's not really about the money, Clarissa. We were meant and expected to use up the whole emergency fund over the whole summer, regardless. I'm surprised it remained completely untouched through the summer, really." Paul leans against the kitchen counter, head hung. He looks pretty damn depressed.

"As you know, father doesn't trust us with pocket money. I was hoping to save up what he gave us for the summer and show him that we can, in fact, take proper care of funds," He pauses to let out another sigh, and then begrudgingly looks your way with squinted eyes. "I suppose that plan has failed. Well, it can't be helped. Next time, make sure to talk to me before you make these kinds of big and questionable purchases. I'd like you to explain the situation to me in more detail, by the way."

It's at that point that Kimiko comes down the stairs, and Paul gestures you to hold. "...I suppose we can talk about it later."

Well, at least now you have a little more time to figure out a plan of some kind and make your excuse more believable.

Kind of disappointing, but nothing would have changed even if you knew what Paul was up to. Ren's life is worth way more than some chump change. In fact, it's a good thing you were living out of your house for the vacation, since you'd probably not have enough to pay off Mayuri.

The three of you sit down to have your breakfast. It's kind of quiet, but it isn't awkward.

Kimiko heads off to the bathroom, leaving the two of you alone for a few minutes more.

"...Thought you'd go way harder on me." You say, smirking a bit.

"You're not getting lunch OR dinner today." He sternly and immediately rebukes your optimism.

Oh.

...

>"Oh, come on! I wouldn't have done it unless I really needed to!"
>Talk about your parents. "...Wish mom would manage the funds. Then we'd have our own cash for sure."

I'd like to know more about our parental situation, but it doesn't really seem appropriate to bring it up right now?

So I just had a thought: Isshin might still be the Captain of 10th Squad. If there was no Shiro business, that means he never met Masaki, and no reason to stay in the living world.

I don't think that's relevant. Like I suspect this quest is a lot shorter than people are assuming, and when Kimiko leaves, it's gonna be in a way that involves the authorities knowing that we killed Aiko.
>>
>>39402442
Hmmm...maybe so. Would make sense.
Also that third option doesn't seem too logical. Doesn't Aiko have a family?
>>
>>39402372
>talk about your parents
>>
>>39402463
I dunno, the biggest reasons I think otherwise is that skull hollow guy we killed apparently works for someone and I doubt we could deal with said someone any time soon, and also that Naoko and Yuuko at the very least seem like they'd be very underused to the point of pointlessness (especially Yuuko) if it's gonna end soon.
Not that I want it to last as long as Bleach the manga did. But you know.

"Oh, come on! I wouldn't have done it unless I really needed to!"

"I suggest you stay quiet before I force you into repaying your debt! Accept your punishment, and think about your wrongdoing!"

"What debt, Paul? It's not like I borrowed -your- money!"

"The debt of my crushed aspirations towards acquiring personal funds!"

Damn it, how do you even argue against something like that?

"Well, at least delay my punishment! Today's an important day!"

"I refuse!"

"Well, fine!"

Kimiko returns to the shouting match. She only chuckles, though, and sits on the couch to spend the few remaining minutes left before you all need to head out. Must seem like a normal morning to her.

"Geez, I wish mom would be in charge of the funds, then this sort of crap would never be a problem!" You spray your hands, complaining.

Paul opens his mouth to argue against that, but he only lets out a weird noise, and stares at you with widened eyes. His dumfounded expression gradually sours, soon turning into a very severe, disbelieving frown.

"Do you know what you just suggested, Clarissa?" He asks, still looking at you like you're a complete idiot.

"What?" You say, lifting a brow. "It'd be great. We'd probably be living in a mansion. With maids and like ten cars!"

"Yes, we'd be drowning in mansions, maids and sports cars, no doubt. And that's the problem! She'd spend all of it on satisfying her whims! We'd end up out on the streets in a month. No, I'm most likely underestimating her. Maybe two weeks."

"...Wow. She's not THAT bad, come on."

(1/2)
>>
>>39403724
"Well, there's a reason father became so mistrustful of lending anyone money," Paul folds his arms, sighing again. "I suppose that's only to be expected with how irresponsible she is. Our father has to take care of two children and a woman who refuses to work and does nothing but enjoy life while our father has to manage a multimillionaire company. I should have said 'three children', honestly. Even though I sometimes resent him, I can't help but respect the old man and the pain he has to go through on a daily basis. I can quite sincerely relate to his troubles."

"...Wasn't it dad who said that she doesn't have to work?" You fold your arms and shrug. "And it's not like he's... completely greedy, I guess. I mean, if we ask him to get us something, he usually buys it for us. Or gives us enough money to buy that thing."

"That doesn't always happen; occasionally, he refuses. Perhaps we've grown spoiled, but I dislike how controlled that aspect of our life is. I'd enjoy some freedom in that regard."

"Yeah, I agree."

After exchanging nods, the argument seems to disperse.

"...Your mother is a NEET?" Kimiko asks during the silence, and you and Paul just sort of shrug and nod in a poorly synchronized unison.

It's time to go to school.

...

Naoko is finally back. You didn't even notice her at first; only when she approached your desk did you realize that she was present. Her silent arrival seems to shoo away the other girls surrounding you, even though she's not doing anything menacing or even remotely threatening. And it's not like she's scary or anything, so what's the problem?

"Are we doing it tonight?" She murmurs softly, only for you to hear.

"Only if you're feeling alright, Naoko." You tell her, and she nods.

Ren tries to act normally, but she seems really eager to talk about the spiritual and about her power with you. She hasn't actually figured anything out, mainly because she didn't have much of an opportunity to experiment.

You don't see Yuuko anywhere, but you can still feel someone's eyes on your back.

Akemi is trying to convince Moriko to overcome her allergy to coffee in order to become more energetic in life.

It's time for lunch again. You were about to go, but you spot Naoko leaving the classroom.

...That's right. Maybe you should invite her to hang out with the rest of your friends?

Though, it might cause a lot of awkwardness and tension. Maybe today's not the best day to try it? There's always tomorrow- or, well, monday, because tomorrow's a day off.

Didn't she also mention something about being willing to talk some sense into Yuuko? Sure, it might take time, but... well...

"Hey, Naoko, hold up!"

The girl turns around at your call; she pretty clearly has no idea why she's needed right now.

"You wanna have lunch with us? With me, Rin, Aiko and the others? You know, on the rooftop?"

"...Alright." She's pretty quick to accept; you were expecting a bit more resistance, if only because of how shy of a person she seems to be.

The people left in the classroom seem to hush down in sight of this development. You ignore them. Your friends, too, seem quite surprised about this, though.

"I didn't know you were friends." Tomoko leans in close to quietly whisper, and you just sort of wave her off, like, 'yeah, we're friends'.

"Naoko seems like a good person. I don't mind." Moriko says. Maybe she slept through the reason of why everyone's afraid of Naoko, along with you. Or... something like that.

"Why was I included in 'the others'?" Akemi whines. Tomoko explains that it's because their names are many and much longer than the other ones. She's right, actually, but Akemi's not satisfied with that.

...

Lunch is pretty tense. Everyone seems out of their comfort zone. Whenever someone tries to start up a conversation with your soft-spoken friend, she answers in a clear-cut way that rarely leaves any room for discussion.

When Akemi says something dumb, she doesn't smile or laugh at her - she just looks at her questionably, trying to seriously and literally interpret the nonsensical things she says.

"I don't think you can overcome an allergy like that." Naoko explains to Akemi that Moriko can't, in fact, overcome her allergy to coffee just by brute forcing her way into acquiring immunity. Akemi seems really depressed about it.

Naoko's like a massive boulder thrown into a tiny river's stream. It's just sitting there, stubbornly and menacingly, blocking the flow, and the rock can't really leave even if it wanted to.

Why does it always feel like you're the one who's expected to defuse these types of situations?

...Your stomach suddenly lets out a mean growl, forcing everyone to turn your way. You don't have a lunch with you, and staring at everyone's tasty meals is just driving you a little mad. You didn't want to embarrass yourself by begging them for food, so you just sort of sat there with your fancy golden lunchbox, pretending to be okay.

"...I can share my lunch with you, Clarissa." Kimiko says, smiling and showing off her half-eaten meal.

"Yeah, me too!" Ren enthusiastically picks up on her suggestion. She seems to be in a good mood. "We can all share a bit, I think."

"...I can even feed you if you're feeling weak, Clarissa." Kimiko's smirk turns into a mischievous one. Your face is getting kind of warm.

"Yeah, me too!" Akemi cheerfully picks up on her suggestion. She's just as stupid as always. You smack her.

...This is pretty damn humiliating, but your stomach's loudly demanding nutrition.

"...Alright. But only if you guys are really fine with it. I'll... borrow some food."

"Here, eat this fish." Moriko groggily mutters, and, holding a slice of salmon with her chopsticks, tries to shove it into your mouth. You lean out of the way and shake your head a bit, trying to tell her not to do it. Her sleepy and smiling expression tenses up a bit, squinted eyes opening up a bit more, and the corners of her mouth lowering; she looks as if she's just accepted an unspoken challenge.

Moriko thrusts the chopsticks into your closed mouth, but you avoid it. The blue haired girl leans in closer, probably to make it harder for you to move around, and continues her attempts to force feed you. After a tense struggle during which nobody does a damn thing to help you in any way, the piece of fish drops on the hem of your skirt.

"Ah, what the hell, Moriko! I can feed myself! Quit tryin' to-..."

Opening your mouth while she's still this close is a mistake.

...Well, the salmon tastes really good.

"Eh?! What the heck, Moriko! I wanna feed Clarissa, too!" Akemi springs up from her seat and begins to try and stab you in the mouth with her eating utensils. "Here, Clarissa, eat this tomato~..." You punch her and she drops like a rock.

"I can eat by myself, alright?! I don't need you to- Kimiko, don't you even think about it. Put the chopsticks down."

"But how are we supposed to share our food with you otherwise? Naoko, please hold her down for me. We can't leave her hungry. It's for her own good."

"As if she'd listen to you! Just give me the food and I'll..." You glance at Naoko. She's glaring your way; actually considering it.

You concede and let them feed you. The situation is quite ridiculous, but everyone seems to be having a fun time. Except for you, of course.

"Ahaha! Clarissa's like a dog getting snacks under the table!" Akemi blurts out something stupid again, and you hit her really hard.

Well, another awkward social situation defused at your own expense; the expense of having half a dozen girls feed you lunch. You're like a hero or something. A social hero.

...No, you're not enjoying this at all!

...

The school day soon ends. Finally, the weekend officially begins.

Kimiko checks her phone, and says that everything is clear.

Of course, nobody's going to be sitting at home this evening. You're all going out together, Naoko and Kimiko included. You're not going to be getting dinner back at home, so it seems that you'll be munching off your friends some more. You're beginning to lose shame about things like these, and that's probably not good.

"...Geez. You should seriously stop bickering with Paul so much, or learn to cook yourself." Ren says, and the others agree. Even Kimiko nods, laughing.

"Yeah, I guess you're right. Starving kind of sucks. Any suggestions?"

Your companions abruptly go quiet. With that said, no one seems to actually know how to get along with Paul. Tomoko is your savior here, and she coughs to draw attention.

"Paul is someone who hates breaking out of and being broken out of habits. If it's the former, it can't really be helped, assuming it's something he himself does. If it's the latter, well, just do not do that, and I'm certain you will stay on good terms." She explains.

"Well, I don't think I did that. I mean, I ruined his plans, but I don't think I touched his routines or anything." You mutter, scratching at your chin.

"Clarissa, everybody hates it when things don't go according to plan. Especially someone like Paul, who's a hardworking perfectionist at heart," Tomoko adjusts her glasses; they glint in the setting sunlight. "He is a very responsible and dependable man. You are in a very good position as his sister; you're simply not being appreciative of all the efforts he goes through for you, whether he enjoys his obligations or not. Obviously, he won't be grateful to you, either."

You look at her skeptically. Her opinion might be a little biased, but you're trying to keep an ear out for that precious advice.

"So are you telling me to suck up to him?"

"...I'm telling you to open your eyes and realize how hard he works every day! He deserves to be comforted and loved for all his efforts!" She sounds pretty irritated, but it's not really directed at you.

"...Alright, uh, thanks, Tomoko," You look up, contemplating for a bit. "I guess a good way to stay out of his habits is to stay away from him."

"That's no good! You can't solve the issues between you two by ignoring them and each other!" Akemi says something smart for a change. She's kind of right.

The morning's situation was just unlucky. Maybe you'll manage to avoid conflicts with Paul in the future.

You spend the evening in the company of friends. They've gotten used to Naoko, though it's almost like she's not even there. Well, as long as she doesn't mind it, as long as she's enjoying herself, that's fine.

Kimiko tells you that it's about time for the two of you to go and get ready. You say your farewells and take your leave.

You really wish the evening didn't need to end. Even if not forever, you wanted it to go for at least a little longer.

A few hours left until the night sets. Until then, you proceed with the day as usual, and pretend to get ready for bed. You decide to watch a comedy with Kimiko on your computer, though before that, she decided to take a shower. You settle down on your bed, prepare some snacks for the next hour and a half, and listen to music while she's out.

When Kimiko comes back to your room, she's wearing nothing but a long towel.

"What the hell, Kimiko! Put some clothes on!"

"Sorry, I forgot them here. Just turn away, alright?" She walks to the side, and drops the towel, baring her gentle curves. You forget to turn away.

You feel surprised, flustered, embarrassed. There is something else, but it is quickly overtaken by disgust and fear.

"So, let's start with that movie, Clarissa?" She finally finishes. You nod at her, and pretend that you've been looking away.

Throughout the movie, you could barely think of anything else.

...Don't you dare say a single word. If you do, I swear, I will rip your throat out, no matter who you are or claim to be.

It's time for the patrol.

Naoko joins the two of you at a designated meeting spot, and you set out on the usual route. It's another one of those dull times where nothing happens. Not even a stray soul to chase, and not the smallest sign of a Hollow.

It's the final night, but it's disappointingly peaceful.

...

>"Can't you just scout ahead for us, Naoko? You're way faster. I'm feeling kind of tired. I'd prefer this to end soon."

That was a really crummy last day, I thought we voted to show her a good time (not in that way pervs)? Cause that wasn't even no-effort, it was like, negative effort.

It looks like we watched a movie with her, and in the end there wasn't enough time. Especially since she likes school for some reason.

I had expected something else than glossed-over evening with friends, glossed-over movie at home' like, say, actually going out. Could have been with the girls too, but still. Also not having it glossed-over after the build-up last thread. Oh well.

You ask Naoko about her ability. What she can do and how she does it.

"Putting a little power into my cross lets me manifest items out of thin air. Those items can interact with the spiritual side. I use them to make gloves to fight hurt Hollows, usually. It seems to hurt more than a regular punch. I make shoes and use more spiritual power to glide above the ground. It's faster that way."

"It's probably not thin air that those items are made of. It's reishi - spiritual particles. Looks like your cross can gather them, or something along those lines." Kimiko interjects, offering something that's probably a completely reasonable explanation somewhere. Naoko continues.

"If I need a ranged attack, I dissolve a created item and fire what's left of it at the target."

"Did someone teach you all of this?" Kimiko asks, and the other girl shakes her head.

"I learned everything on my own."

...Man. Naoko would make for a much better Substitute Shinigami than you. You may both be murderers, but at least Naoko puts her talents to good use.

"Why not make a weapon? Like a sword?" You ask.

"I'm not good at using a sword or any other weapon." Another cut and dry response.

You keep on walking.

"...This is where the route ends. We're finished for tonight." Kimiko says.

"Wait. We're finished? What if a Hollow attacks? We should stay on this route for a while longer." Naoko says, apparently confused with the way you do things.

"The patrol is for catching wandering souls and sending them off to Soul Society, not tracking down Hollows, Naoko. It's simply not an option for Clarissa."

Naoko relents with a hesitant nod.

The three of you walk home.

...Is this really how this night will end?

You turn off the lights and cover yourself with the blanket. The last day ended up being nothing special, despite your little promise to Kimiko. No, even worse, you ruined it at the very end. You feel awful.

It's even worse to think that it could have been way worse. What if you forgot, or allowed yourself to forget, even if for a moment? Just the thought of that makes you shiver.

You had a good time with your friends, like you usually do; perhaps did. You can barely remember anything about today. It was fun and enjoyable, and yet it feels as plain as the air you'd use to say those words. Why is it that you can't seem to enjoy yourself anymore? Is she still bothering you, despite everything that you've said and thought?

Not, it's not Kimiko. You will never mix her up with anyone anymore, no matter what kind of body she occupies.

This must be guilt. Despite your attempts, it seems that this is all you'll have left once the week is over. Which is soon. Just a few more hours away. Nobody can rid you of this guilt. Even if Aiko was to die right now, there is no way they could pin it down on you; you've had no hand in it. There won't be a single sign that you've done anything to her.

...Trying to fall asleep is torture. Your one day off, and you're wasting its morning on nothing. Turning in bed does nothing but wrinkle the sheets.

It feels like you are being watched.

It's a suffocating feeling. Trying to convince yourself that it's caused by stress does nothing to relieve it. Perhaps a psychotic disorder.

Just go to sleep. Don't open your eyes. If you don't, then you will certainly fade out eventually. Even if it takes a while, rest will come, and you'll forget everything.

Just don't open your eyes. If you do, something bad might happen. There is nothing of worth to be seen in your old room, in this old town, in this old night. In the dark, you won't see anything, anyway. It's useless. Stop thinking about opening them.

You open them.

You see its pale mask, looking down at you from the ceiling of your own room. When it realizes that it was spotted, it relishes its discovery like a childish game. Wordlessly, only with its yellow, sickly eyes, it proudly displays its sadistic glee.

Those eyes have nothing human left in them; perhaps they never had in the first place. Those eyes are easy to recall even without having seen them before. These are the eyes that are watching. This whole week. And now that you see them, now that you know them - even longer than that.

The night sets.

The shadow moves. Its movements are silent and don't disturb even the air. Your eyes widen, but you are prepared.

This truly is the final night.

Has this thing been stalking us the whole time? Is this whole quest a massive mindfuck like Samurai Flamenco/I Fight Giants and it's the manifestation of our mental disorder and we're really just a distrubed Bleach fangirl?
