You are Kusajishi Riku, and today marks your first official meeting with your fellow Shinigami Lieutenants since your meteoric rise to the position a few weeks ago.

Outside the First Division Lieutenant's meeting room you spot Omaeda Marenoshin: the large, bombastic Shinigami who held your position until you beat him in a duel over who had the “right” to succeed him. He nods curtly when he spots you as well.

“You're early, Lieutenant,” he observes loudly. “Leave the introductions to me, better that way.”

The man who was Lieutenant before you opens the door, leading you in to face a group of ten Shinigami with badges like your own, seated at a low table. Their eyes seem mostly to ignore Omaeda, instead evaluating you: their newest colleague. Your escort rattles off their names, in Division order.

Sasakibe Chōjirō is the pale-haired Lieutenant under the Head Commander, who greeted you at the inquiry. Next you are introduced to Third's Rōjūrō Ōtoribashi, a blonde-haired man who seems to share his Captain's foppish demeanor. Next is Fourth's Yamada Seinosuke, dark of hair and who amazingly enough comes off as unpleasant despite having yet to say anything to you. Fifth's Lieutenant is Aizen Sōsuke, whose only remarkable characteristic is that he's completely unremarkable. You then meet Sixth's Kuchiki Sōjun, who strikes you as an older and more handsome version of Byakuya. What is it about Kuchiki genetics, anyway?

Seventh's Lieutenant Jin'emon Kotsubaki is a stern looking man with a scar over one eye, short hair, and long sideburns: a classic gambler sort of look. Division Eight's Lieutenant is Lisa Yadōmaru, a prim-looking young woman with a black braid who looks like the polar opposite of her Captain. Ninth's representative is the green-haired Kuna Mashiro, who seems like she's barely paying attention... and given what you've seen of the Captains' meetings, hers is probably the appropriate attitude towards meetings like this.

Tenth's Lieutenant Shiba Isshin seems similarly disinterested at first, but his eyes betray him: he's definitely paying the most careful attention to you out of his peers. Then you spot Sarugaki Hiyori, the Lieutenant Yoruichi referred to as a “pain in the ass”.

You're immediately treated to a demonstration of why.

The blonde Lieutenant scoffs at you, crossing her arms defensively across the washboard she calls a chest. “And this is the girl who you say beat you? Really, Marenoshin?”

Your new peers' exasperated reactions tell you that this isn't exactly a rare way for Hiyori to greet newcomers. Marenoshin, for his part, simply laughs it off.

“She beat my ass, Hiyori. I was utterly crushed.”

“You must be getting old or somethin', Marenoshin.”

No reason for a member of 2nd squad to show off what we can do. Just pretend it's take your kid to work day or something. Yorichi has confidence in us and that's all we need.
>>
Alright, updating.
>>
>>39385689
Sure.

It was only from the basis of Nanao and Hitsugaya being rather needling on their Captain and Lieutenant respectively in doing their work. At least there's one responsible member in their respective duo. For our 2nd Division though? It's Yoruichi and Riku, so...
Also, lighten up. It was only a joke. I doubt it would be mentioned beyond an offhand remark.
>>
>>39385699
plus if anyone does manage to piss us off we can always just pull a prank on them like a paint bomb or something later while being nothing but smiles when we're actually face to face with the person. We're 2nd squad and stole old man genocide's shoes, we can prank the living shit out of anyone here.
>>
>>39385563
“Thanks for the introductions, Mister Omaeda,” you nod at the large man, completely ignoring Hiyori. “I can take it from here, I think.”

“Good,” he agrees with a satisfied nod. “I'll report back to HQ.”

“Hey, are you ignoring me!?” she demands. You continue to ignore her, speaking as if you simply can't hear her annoyed outbursts. That just makes her even more annoyed... good. “You deaf or somethin'?”

“So, what's the agenda?” you ask, seating yourself casually at the long table with the others, who seem to have mostly appreciated the show of restraint. Isshin, however, looks a little disappointed for some reason. You also overhear Kuchiki mutter something about “understanding why 'that demon' likes her”.

One of the other Lieutenants, Aizen, passes you a cup of tea. “Believe it or not, Miss Kusajishi, the Stealth Corps' representative usually doesn't say much at all.”

You shrug as you take a sip. “I'd believe it. Even Marenoshin's that much of a professional, at least.”

“What we usually discuss is other business,” he continues, his tone smooth and pleasant. “Mister Shiba, for example, was about to comment on this year's induction ceremony, if I'm not mistaken?”

Shiba Isshin, the dark-haired man with the unusually focused gaze, nods with a small grunt of acknowledgment. “Anyone have the recruitment numbers and current membership tallies for the Divisions? Mighta' lost my copy.”

The proceedings of the meeting are fairly boring, though you take some notes to relay to your own Division later. They're illegible to anyone else as it turns out, which Mashiro takes the liberty of pointing out to the group. You get some good-natured ribbing from a few of the other Lieutenants, before Mashiro also points out that Isshin's handwriting is even worse: an “embarrassment to his family name”, Hiyori calls it.

Yep. Pranking is good, no reason to get violent with allies. Isn't there also the possibility we will be tasked with killing other shinigami as a member of the stealth corps? If so all the more reason to keep from revealing what we can do.
>>
>>39385925
That Aizen guy, looks nice. I like him.
>>
>>39385925
All the while, you carefully feel out the spiritual energies of each Lieutenant in the room: they're all holding back, the question is how much...

Seems of the group you're the fourth strongest or so, behind the fop, the Kuchiki, and likely the Shiba. Yamamoto's right hand seems to have very well-tempered reiatsu, though not especially powerful, and Aizen's very difficult to get a read on. He could have very little to hide or the most out of any of you, but you can tell for sure he's excellent at hiding it either way. Everyone else is objectively impressive, but most likely weaker than you.

After Isshin releases Hiyori from his choke-hold, the conversation turns back to you. “So tell me, Miss Kusajishi,” Aizen asks thoughtfully, sipping at his tea, “what was Hueco Mundo like?”

“Who says I would know?” you mutter, not sure how much you should divulge.

Lieutenant Kuchiki laughs it off. “Come now. The whole Seireitei's talking about how you and Commander Urahara went and tracked down that Third Division officer.” Rose, as the Third Division Lieutenant seems to prefer being called, frowns.

“Yes, I'd like to hear about that myself.”

And simply "Hueco Mundo" sounds good.
>>
>>39386171
Probably the same reason he uses German for Quincies.
Because Kubo deems it so.
...
More likely is that it's not supposed to be Spanish, but Mexican. Carries on the theme with masks, flash and death to evoke images of dia de muertos and the like.
I'm basically guessing at this point.
>>
>>39386005
“It's very... Spanish,” you explain.

Aizen cocks his head at you. “Spanish?”

You nod. “Very much so, yes. Other than that it's sand, sand, Hollows, and more sand. Saw a dead tree once, that was exciting.”

“It sounds SOOO boring,” Mashiro sighs.

“The high point was stabbing an Adjuchas in the face,” you continue, which surprises a few of your new peers. “But yeah, it wasn't at all what I was expecting. I almost feel kinda bad for them now.”

“How so?” Aizen presses, suddenly interested again.

You shrug. “Nothing, really. There's just so much pointless death... any Hollow with a shred of sanity must be horrified of it all.”

“You really think there's such a thing as a sane Hollow?” Isshin asks thoughtfully.

It's probably not wise to say anything about Halibel, Apacci, and company around these people. Not yet, and probably not ever... even Yoruichi only knows the vague details that there were some Hollows you ran across that were more decent than the rest. So, you simply deflect the question.

“Who can say? The world is bigger than what you or I can see.”

“And the criminal?” Rose asks impatiently.

You shake your head. “Dealt with. The rest is classified... you'd have to ask the Head Captain, and he'd probably say the same.”

"Sorry."
(1/2)
>>
>>39386460
The meeting is soon adjourned, once there's nothing else really to discuss and the tea runs out. A date is set for the next meeting, and you find yourself excused. On top of that Yoruichi's given you the day off, so you can actually do stuff today that isn't paperwork or killing Hollows.

Behind you, Lieutenant Sarugaki scoffs at you again. "Dammit. I don't see what's so special about 'er."

You can hear Isshin reply, his voice tired. "If you can't tell for yourself, why don't you just ASK her already? Jeez, it's always like this with you."

"So, Miss Stealth Corps Lieutenant," Hiyori growls. "Are you all talk, or are you gonna show me what you're made of?"

"And why should I bother?" you reply.

"If I don't know how strong you are, how can I count on you if I ever hafta?"

Well... she may actually have a bit of a point. Trust is important, after all.

“Miss Hiyori,” you address her, pressing the hilt of your sword into the small of her back and letting your full spiritual pressure erupt from within, “which way are you looking? It's been a while since I was over there.”

As the afterimage you left in front of her fades away, a terrified Hiyori turns to face you, wide-eyed in shock that you took her back so quickly and easily. “What... you...”

“I'm a unit Commander in the Stealth Corps,” you reply, allowing your energy to subside again to its regular, calm state. “Please don't insult me again by underestimating my abilities, or by doubting my reliability.”

“Y... yeah,” she replies. “Sorry.”

“It's fine,” you reply, allowing yourself a little smile. “Now that you understand that, let's at least TRY to be friendly? Shall we?”

“... fine.”

You offer a slight bow before departing: she's been suitably chastised, so there's no need to keep up the fierce facade. This is a good time to take care of something you've had to put off for a while now, ever since you returned to the Seireitei: speaking with your sword, Tenkotsuki. There's a nice wooded area on the Second Division grounds, with a small waterfall and a rocky pool: Yoruichi's come here to meditate before, so you figure there must be something to it. Taking your sword from your sash, you seat yourself opposite the waterfall and close your eyes.

"I see you have finally found time to speak with me," Tenkotsuki quietly rebukes you from under her cherry tree. "I had started to wonder when you would be back."

"Sorry," you offer a small bow. "You might've helped me read, but paperwork still takes some time, y'know."

"I see. Have you considered the nature of my abilities, after what happened in Hueco Mundo?"

You have, actually. Two weak spells, each different: one cast by you, and one cast by Tenkotsuki herself, both in the same amount of time it would take to cast one. That's in addition to her ability to store a spell for you and release it through her blade or sheath, as well as to chant an incantation for you in battle.

"If I were to tell you that my Shikai may be reduced to two simple categories," she continues, "what would you say those would be? And if I told you all of my abilities, Bankai included, had a similarity despite my hatred of Bankai, what might you guess that similarity is?"

Her abilities seem to have a basis in combat superiority. Where an opponent has to focus to cast a spell, we can cast a full power one faster or two simultaneously. We can also cast a spell behind an opponents guard... either denying them the opportunity to do things, or enhancing our ability to do them...
>>
>>39387229
One is to do with empowering/modifying kido, the other is releasing/using them in unexpected ways? No idea what the bankai might be.

>Two Categories for Shikai
Hmm.. Amplification and Containment maybe? She can amplify what ever kido we cast or contain a Kido for later use or contain an incantation to be used alongside our Kido? Maybe generation instead of amplification?

>Everything linked together including Bankai
Well the easy guess is they all relate to manipulation of Reiatsu or Kido. Though maybe they all relate to restricting our enemy? I can't remember the exact word we use to summon her at the moment, but it should be a significant hint to her unifying ability.
>>
>>39387129
>>39387229
>two simple categories
1) Concerted effort in part of Riku and Tenkotsuki, and 2) split effort?

>similarity
Hmm... I get a feeling it might involve re-purposing an enemy's "spell" for our own and she might hate it because it acknowledges the superiority of an enemy's ability.

Got no solid basis for this theory though.
>>
>>39387229
I'm guessing something similar to a spell blade, in which you're storing spell "charges" and releasing them through the blade. Kinda like Getsuga, but with spells and the ability to hold more than one "spell charge". And since our foxy sword spirit has 9 tails, 8 of those tails store a spell charge, and the 9th just combines all of them into a spell nuke.
>>

>>
>>39387369
What could go wrong?
>>
>>39387229
Okay, we have a dual weapon style, so far we can hold kido in our sheath, and enhance kido from our blade, seemingly through her encanting it with us. Maybe one of the word is associated with the sheath, one with the sword.

And her command word is Prohibit, which probably factors in somehow.

The similar factor might be that they all need something to alter, they hamper enemy spells, hold and release ours, maybe steal their trump card for our Bankai, it's about harnessing something already there, not making something new.

>>39387325
Containment and Amplification does sound like it's on the right track.
>>
>>39387369
We could get in trouble for using the Garganta to slip in and out of Soul society, but I'm personally for it. We just need to be prepared as players to run into old king death. At least he can't kill you by breathing on you until he's an Arancar.

Oops, I guess here's my basis for the Bankai theory.

>The second is seeing you as weak as you are now.
And this might lend credence to the enhancement/amplification/boosting votes.
>>
>>39387352
I'm willing to bet that because Tenkotsuki hates her bankai and her pride is being able to stand up for herself, her bankai form basically requires an outside source in which you buff your ally with spells instead of buffing yourself and leaving yourself super vulnerable.

"I'm guessing you have a few ways to modify how I cast spells," you suggest, "such as saying the incantation for me, or casting a different spell as I cast one of my own."

Tenkotsuki nods, her tails gently waving behind her as she rises to her feet. "This is correct. This arises from the fact that as Zanpakuto and wielder, it is necessary that we should be able to hear one another in battle, and without. When you can hear my voice, and I can hear yours, your voice is my voice, and my voice is yours."

"And my second set of abilities?" she asks, circling to your left side slowly and thoughtfully. "What would you imagine unites them?"

You ponder the question a moment. "I'm not sure, exactly. But I'm guessing it has something to do with you helping me cast spells through your blade?"

Tenkotsuki stops, frowning to herself. "Not quite, Miss Riku. My voice is your voice, and your voice is my voice. It is the same with our powers: your power is my own, and vice versa."

Wait... so does that mean she has her own power, independent of your own? That can't be right, that's not how Zanpakuto work, is it?

Tenkotsuki seems to sense your doubt. "These are my eight Shikai abilities: to chant for you, to cast the same spell as you do, to cast a different spell than you do, or to cast a spell of my own devising. Those are the techniques concerning my voice, in order of difficulty to master."

"The techniques relying on my power are to cast a spell through my blade, to dispel illusions and lesser barriers through striking with my blade, to create very minor illusions when casting a spell, and my most powerful Shikai technique: and the most unpredictable as well."

She motions for you to sit across from her under the tree, as blue flames calmly flicker around you both. "What's the eighth one?"

"Cast one of your own spells," Tenkotsuki explains, "and I can enhance it with my own magic. The results may not always be what you expect, and may be different every time, but will often be as powerful as they are unexpected."

You smile to yourself. "That's quite a trick. If I don't know what I'm expecting, sure as hell nobody else will either."

Tenkotsuki laughs, quickly unfolding her little fan to cover her mouth. You have to admit, she's growing on you in a way. Now that you can understand a little more about who and what she is, how could she not?

"My Bankai, then," she resumes speaking after her laughter subsides. "What could it possibly do?"

"Given what you've told me," you guess, after having thought it over a while, "I'd have to say you hate it because of what you are: my pride."

"Please go on."

With a nod, you continue. "Our Shikai maximizes my ability to cast powerful spells without hindering my other abilities... because we don't like to lose. I'm guessing our Bankai does the opposite, which is why it hurts your pride to use it."

"Am I wrong?"

After a few moments, Tenkotsuki shuts her eyes with a sigh. "There are two ways to use spiritual energy: internally, to enhance your speed, strength, and resilience, and externally. This includes kidō and similar techniques, as well as most reiatsu-based attacks."

"My Bankai negates such external uses of spiritual energy within a certain radius, by you or by your opponent. It is a last-ditch technique for when you face something which possesses greater spiritual power than yourself... and it directly opposes my desire to see you win through our combined strength."

I'll say it now, you will never be part quincy, part shinigami, part hollow. For one thing, all your "quincy" techniques are simply based on echoes from your past life. You can't gather energy the same way a quincy can, because you're fundamentally not a quincy.

And the techniques you CAN use are things that even most quincy were usually taught, meaning pretty much anyone with spiritual power can learn them.
>>

Yeah, we'd need to be able to beat him in a straight up fight to be fully anti-Aizen, and that's a tall order in itself. I think the only ones capable of that right now are maybe Unohana and the old man. I'm not sure where Isshin, Kiske and Yoruichi fall since he had already started transforming by the time they really started fighting him iirc.

“Can it counter another Bankai?” you wonder aloud.

Uncharacteristically, Tenkotsuki shrugs. “I am unsure. I suppose it would depend on whether that Bankai is primarily physical or not. It may counter some outright, reduce the effectiveness of others, or be useless against purely physical types. You will need to use your discretion.”

You nod in agreement. “And an opponent whose physical strength is too great to overcome?”

“Then you would need to use Shikai to defeat them, or else learn a way to enhance your physical abilities to match,” she replies. “Though how you do that is your affair, I'm afraid I cannot teach you.”

“When can I start learning?”

“You know the principles,” she insists, “so I will teach you my Shikai abilities a few at a time, and gradually you will strengthen your ties with me. When the time comes that you can summon me into the outside world and defeat me, you will have earned the right to use our Bankai.”

“I will not make it easy, for I want to ensure you are strong enough and capable enough to use it without getting us both killed. Do you understand?”

“I do,” you bow gently. “Thanks for being honest with me.”

“You are my wielder. It will not do to have you so poorly-informed about me and the capabilities I can lend you.”

He's one of the best at fisticuffs. Like one of the reasons he decided to pull his shit when he did was because he had reached his limits as a shinigami, had already maxed out all his stats. 1863.

It's been several decades since you made Lieutenant. Missions have come and gone with the flow of time, and things around you have changed a bit.

For one thing, you've learned how to use six out of your eight Shikai techniques, with Tenkotsuki having walked you through the first three techniques in each “category”. Only the most powerful two remain elusive and difficult to coordinate, but it shouldn't take long. You've also learned a few new spells, with your most powerful bakudō being #63 and your most powerful hadō being the Raikōhō. In terms of unarmed combat, you've lagged a little. Yoruichi's taught you Tesshō, which is a trick for slamming an enemy's head into the ground to disorient them, and the Takigoi, which eschews offense to trap your opponent's limbs and set up a powerful counterattack. Your raw power has also increased with your spiritual pressure, which means at least you hit harder now than you used to.

Then there are the reports from the living world: more Hollows here and there are cropping up which can apparently hide their presence, and the political situation has taken a turn for the worst. More people will be dying, and that means Hollows will be crawling out of the woodwork to feed on the souls of the dead and dying.

On another somber note, more members of the Fēng family have been killed. Yoruichi's not happy about it at all, and a part of her clearly blames herself for sending them to their deaths. You've tried to remind her that it's not her fault, and though she already knows as much it doesn't mean she hasn't taken it hard anyway. The only bright side is that she's taken the last surviving child of that family under her wing: young Suì Fēng, who you met once, is improving slowly but surely under Yoruichi's guidance. She seems a bit exasperated at the girl's constant reverence towards her, however.

Honestly, it borders on the fanatical.

"Japan is on the edge of a revolution," Yoruichi explains to her assembled subordinates, with you, Kisuke, and the other two Commanders standing behind her. "Revolutions mean warfare, warfare means death, death means Hollow activity."

"Your orders are to go to the living world, and carefully watch developments there as they unfold. Help us give intel to the Thirteen Divisions that will accurately predict the greatest incursions and repel them."

She then divides your units up into smaller groups, ordering them to each major city where revolutionary activity is predicted. When she finally faces you and a group of twenty or so Onmitsu, she nods thoughtfully.

"You'll be taking Kyoto, Lieutenant," she tells you. "The murder capital of Japan right now, where bands of ronin wander in broad daylight unopposed. I'll be counting on you."

"And what should we do if a human attacks us?" you ask warily. Your Captain looks at you strangely, as if for a moment she's torn between saying what she wants to say and what she has to say.

"The mission comes first," she decides after that split second passes. "I'd prefer no human casualties at all, but I trust your judgment if it ever becomes necessary."

You nod quietly, before leading your squad to the main "official" Senkaimon to the human world.

Kyoto this time of year is quite pretty: the streets are full of people, many of whom are coming here for the festival season. But you can tell something just below the surface is wrong: people here and there discuss recent murders of high-profile civilians, and you hear whispers of "Wolves" with swords patrolling the streets.

One of your subordinates, whose name you can't possibly know, bows in front of you.

"Awaiting your word, ma'am. Where shall we focus our efforts?"

Nobody here can see you right now aside from your fellow Shinigami, of course. You could have them sneak around and keep their ears open, or send them to specific places where they're more likely to overhear crucial details of recent disturbances. You could also make a daring move and request to use gigais, or false bodies, to interact with the humans directly.

You request a gigai, which is promptly delivered with Yoruichi's compliments. It looks enough like you that it shouldn't feel weird, but you can expect it to be slower and weaker than your real body. Meanwhile, your team fans out through the city to search on their own. They are to report back to this spot when they learn more.

In your short time here, however, you've heard something interesting: a group of swordsmen in the service of the Shogun known as the “Wolves of Mibu”, who are rumored to be very strong. Officially called the Shinsengumi, their role is to patrol the pleasure and business districts of Kyoto as opposed to the group of swordsmen ordered to protect the royal palace. You figure of the two, following the Shinsengumi will prove more fruitful.

The unit you're looking for is based in a small suburb of Kyoto, in an unremarkable building. Stepping inside reveals a number of armed men of varying descriptions, all sharing similar clothing. Dressed as a normal civilian, they have no way of knowing who or what you are, so your appearance seems to throw them off.

“Is there something we can help you with, miss?” a rather boyish looking young man with a black ponytail greets you. He even bows ever so slightly, though you note that his left hand has tightened around the sheath of his sword, covertly freeing it so that it may be drawn at any instant. “Are you perhaps lost, or have you some manner of business?”

He then turns to one of his companions. “Susumu!” he barks. “We have a visitor! Bring her some tea immediately!”

“My deepest apologies, miss,” he bows again. “I am Okita, instructor in the Tennen Rishin Ryu. Care to take a seat?”

As biased the results that we'll get, this is probably the best way to getting the truth.
The other two options will have the difficulty of the gender barrier. Unless we want to look like a Yamato Nadeshiko?

Also, there's too much twisted sense in things for Kubo not to have planned at least a basis. I keep thinking there's going to be something innocuous that makes us go, 'oh, so that's why it's like that.'

I'm not sure we're familiar enough with the customs of the era to really work around the gender and class barriers. We should let them make their own conclusions then play off those I think.

We could always play up our street rat past if we have no other option, though how much that would benefit us I'm unsure.

“And if I don't comply,” you muse quietly, “do you plan to craw your sword? That's what you're preparing to do, no? I'd heard the Shinsengumi were quite fierce, but to see it for myself is something else.”

“Ah, so you noticed!” Okita smiles, waving at his junior to hurry up and hand you the tea. “My bad. But if you're one of us you get used to such precautions, you see! Nothing personal?”

One of the other men nods thoughtfully to himself, looking you over with gloomy, narrow eyes. “She has a good eye, and looks like she has a strong arm. Unusual.”

“You say you are here to see us for yourself?” a heavily-muscled man with a coat of mail and a helm asks. “Very well then. You may observe, then you will account for your presence here or face arrest.”

“Okita! Matsubara!” he barks. The man who greeted you and a second man come to attention. “Give her a showing of your skills.

The two Shinsengumi bow, before grabbing a pair of sword-like wooden implements from a wall. The gloomy looking man watches you carefully before making a comment.

“You look as if you have never seen a shinai before,” he frowns. “I am Saitō. Who might you be?”

“Kusajishi Riku. And no... I've never used a shinai, or whatever that is.”

Saitō nods. “That implies you have used a sword, perhaps? No matter. I will learn the truth, in time.”

Okita and Matsubara, meanwhile, begin a demonstration match. The former seems to be the better swordsman, while the latter seems to be positioning himself to try and tackle his opponent. Both, however, move much more swiftly than it seems possible, probably due to the way they hold their blades: they focus on the opponent's center line, always returning there after their blades cross. Often after a failed slash they immediately press with a thrust with their blade parallel to the ground, refusing to let up on each other for an instant. Each step is carefully calculated to push their respective target away from their blind side, so that the blade is always between wielder and opponent. It's technically superb work, but eventually Okita's technique wins out.

The man who seems to be in charge nods. “Very good, Okita. Matsubara.”

“Now then, I watched your eyes, miss Kusajishi,” he tells you. “I take it you have some experience, given that you knew exactly where to look when following my students?”

“Would you like to test yourself, perhaps?”

“Mister Okita,” you reply, and the Shinsengumi in question bows politely, shinai held low in front of him. “His technique would be a good test of my own.”

The man nods thoughtfully. “Don't come to regret that choice, Miss Kusajishi. Okita is the finest student of Tennen Rishin Ryu.”

You grab the shortest shinai off the wall you can find and test its weight: it's a little like a real sword, but not quite. There shouldn't be a problem with that at all, though it's not the exact length you're now used to. As you stand across from your new opponent, he smiles warmly.

“Don't hold out on me now, miss,” he taunts. “I want to see what you can do with that short shinai.”

You wait for Okita to make the first move, which almost turns out to be a mistake.

A quick downward slash nearly catches you in the face before you step backwards. The young swordsman replaces with a flat thrust and you use your short little shinai to parry it. You look for an opening but don't find it, as Okita turns to keep his blade on you even as he retracts after the failed thrust. Though his attacks are ferocious, he's still grinning at you.

“Surprised you parried that,” he comments as he circles to one side of you. “Seems you have some skill.”

You smile back. “Thanks for that.”

A trio of quick slashes come at you next, which you manage to either sidestep or parry, but you feel yourself being pushed by the constant onslaught from Okita's weapon. You can definitely see how he got a reputation in the Shinsengumi, who are all supposedly strong fighters.

Then comes another flat thrust, which bends fluidly into a slash as you try to sidestep it. His shinai collides with your own as he steps in, pushing you off balance. Despite the fact that you hadn't intended it, you lash out with your left fist to knock the hilt of his sword, which prevents him from landing a blow.

“What's this?” Okita muses thoughtfully. “And here I could have sworn I asked you to show me everything you had. You're not being very cooperative here, Miss Kusajishi.”
