You are Kusajishi Riku, a Shinigami Lieutenant and Unit Commander in the Seireitei's Stealth Corps. Considering you've been dead now for more than a decade, your life is coming along pretty well.

Or at least it had been, before your Captain told you what your first official mission as her Lieutenant is going to be: tracking down a rogue Shinigami who has fled to Hueco Mundo. You know, that place where all the giant soul-eating monsters come from.

“I wouldn't even consider sending normal Onmitsukidō on this mission,” Yoruichi informs you as you race to Urahara's quarters. “Hueco Mundo's too dangerous for anyone under Lieutenant-level to survive for long.”

“So how's this guy planning to survive?” you ask. From your understanding this man, Yoshiwara Shinsaku, was a Third-Seat, not a Lieutenant. “Seems crazy if you ask me.”

Yoruichi seems to have given this some thought, because her reply is immediate. She doesn't even have to take her eyes off where she's going. “He killed two of his own squadmates, injured three more, and tried to open a Hell portal inside the Kuchiki manor... he's either insane or just that confident.”

You and your Captain stop at what looks like a large apartment: using your senses, you recognize that Kisuke's in there. But instead of knocking at the door, Yoruichi simply lets herself in. You find the Third Unit Commander sitting at a low desk, writing by candle light.

Urahara Kisuke looks up in amusement, setting his quill aside. “I take it this isn't a social call?”

“Wish it were,” Yoruichi replies. “It's that incident I told you about.”

“He's made a move, then?” Kisuke gets to his feet, and tucks his sword into his sash. “Hueco Mundo?”

Your Captain nods. “Yeah. We're going to the Kuchiki manor to investigate. Grab your kit.”

“You're not planning on breaking and entering, right?” you ask, half jokingly. Yoruichi's mischievous grin is all the answer you need.

Not ten minutes later, you find yourself breaking into the Kuchiki family manor with a hair pin under Yoruichi's orders. Your Captain stands behind you, gently tapping her toe while Kisuke stares at you. The moonlight shining behind you is just enough to see, but having so many people hovering around is making it harder to work your magic on this lock. They probably don't realize it, either.

“Can't we just... you know...” Urahara mutters.

Yoruichi shakes her head. “Not my first choice, Kisuke.”

“Captain...” you whisper.

“Lieutenant?”

“You're in my light.”

“Right. Sorry.” Yoruichi waves Kisuke off, and with proper light on the situation you manage to push the last pin into position and gently rotate the tumbler. Turning the handle produces a metallic click, and you're in.

As the three of you pad quietly through the darkened hallway, Kisuke shoots you a grin. “Seems our new Lieutenant has some interesting hobbies.”

“Shut it, Kisuke,” you sigh.

“Just saying.”

It doesn't take your little team very long to find what Yoruichi was apparently looking for: an unremarkable wall of rice-paper screen doors, at the back of one of the many rooms of the manor. The woodwork over the individual panels is finely done in hardwood, finer than any other residence you've been in apart from the Shihōin household. Kisuke and your Captain seem to notice something you don't, before Kisuke gives it away.

“Isn't this an exterior wall?” Urahara muses. Could be... a house this big tends to get you turned around. Too many rooms, not enough open air.

Yoruichi nods, visibly relaxing as she examines the screens. “As I thought. The Kuchikis have themselves a private Senkaimon. Take a look, Kisuke.”

“Right,” the man replies sternly, producing a set of western-looking tools from the sleeves of his uniform. “I'll analyze the device for evidence of modification.”

“Modification by whom, may I ask?”

Standing in the doorframe is the owner of the voice, which practically overflows with pride: a lanky boy, seemingly in his teens, with carefully arranged dark hair and pale skin. Though he's wearing what are obviously his nightclothes, his right hand grasps the hilt of a wooden practice sword.

Kisuke sighs. “Well, that could have gone better.”

“We're tracking the criminal from yesterday, little Byakuya,” Yoruichi explains, her voice surprisingly cheery considering she's just been found trespassing in another noble's home. “How about we play a game while Kisuke here wraps things up? To pass the time?”

“Oh?” the boy asks, making it pretty clear he's not buying what your Captain's selling.

For her part, Yoruichi merely smiles and nods. “Yup. I was thinking a round of “go back to bed Byakuya”, perhaps.”

“I refuse.”

“Then tag? Hide and seek?” Yoruichi presses playfully.

“I refuse.”

“You're no fun now that you're growing up, little Byakuya,” Yoruichi groans dramatically as the young Kuchiki glares daggers at her. “Riku, you'll play with me, right?”

Seems she's trying to buy time for Kisuke by teasing this Byakuya kid.

>>

“Naturally,” you reply. “Unlike some people in this room I'm not allergic to fun.”

“Get out of my house, all of you,” Byakuya demands.

“I refuse.”

“I insist,” he replies, his hold on the wooden sword tightening.

“And I still refuse,” you reply calmly.

The young Kuchiki's face twitches in obvious frustration. “Tell me why you refuse to simply cooperate!”

“I refuse,” you respond, this time allowing yourself a little self-satisfied smirk. “You see how annoying that is for the rest of us now? So, you wanna keep this up, or shall we play a game instead?”

Kuchiki sighs, obviously used to having to cave to older women after presumably dealing with Yoruichi longer than you've known her.

“Ta-ke-ya-bu-ya-ke-ta,” he begins, using a classic palindrome.

You hear a voice in the back of your head: “Ooh, do 'I have lost', that should be a good taunt!"

“Wa-ta-shi-ma-ke-ma-shi-ta-wa,” you recite, to Byakuya's surprise. He clearly took you for an idiot.

Yoruichi gives a confident laugh. “Na-ga-ki-yo-no-to-ho-no-ne-bu-ri-no-...”

Byakuya hangs his head as Yoruichi continues one of the longest palindromes you've ever heard. “Just conclude your business and go, were-cat.”

“-ki-ka-na,” your Captain intones playfully as the heir to the Kuchiki family stomps out the door.

You shake your head in disbelief. “He doesn't win very much, does he?”

“Why? Losing to me is the only thing keeping him humble,” Yoruichi grins.

“I'm done,” Kisuke finally announces with a satisfied sigh, sliding a small panel on the wall shut. “This Senkaimon has been messed with, alright. Yoshiwara was trying to change the basic structure and realign the portal with his kidō to change its destination.”

Yoruichi nods thoughtfully. “That settles it. Kisuke, Riku, I want you to bring the criminal Yoshiwara Shinsaku back to the Seireitei. Those are your orders.”

Kisuke nods emphatically. “Of course, Miss Executive. I'll begin setting up the portal.”

The man quickly disappears into the night... damn it, his shunpo are still a fair bit faster than your hirenkyaku, even now. Just how strong is that guy, and how much stronger is Yoruichi?

“So what can we expect when we get there?” you ask Yoruichi, who seems to be leading you back towards your barracks. “The weather any good?”

“There's no weather to speak of,” she replies with a good-natured chuckle. “From what I've heard it's always night, and the whole thing's a desert. I'd imagine Yoshiwara would have started off searching for some kind of shelter to keep the Hollows off of him.”

You frown, considering the possibility that you're going to have to fight nonstop after you arrive there. “Lots of enemies?”

“Maybe not,” Yoruichi mutters. “In truth, I've never been there either. Shinigami don't go to Hueco Mundo as a matter of course.”

“But this Third Seat did?”

She shrugs as you reach her quarters. “It makes no sense to me either, but he's probably still working on the Hell portal technique.”

“Why?” you press. “What would that even accomplish?”

“Not sure,” Yoruichi admits. “But it certainly can't be good... it's a portal to Hell, Riku. All I know for sure is I wouldn't want one in my house. He probably figured something deadly might come out.”

“And his capabilities?”

Yoruichi nods, listing off the other parameters of the mission: Yoshiwara's release takes the shape of a long-chained flail with a reservoir that leaks flaming oil onto whatever it hits. As for his condition upon return, alive is preferred, but dead is fine too.

Inside Yoruichi's room, she reaches for a bundle of cloth on a small shelf. “I've actually got something for you.”

“You've used these before, right?” she asks, handing you what turns out to be several little knives.

You shrug before tucking the blades away safely. “In training, yeah. Never in a fight.”

Your mentor nods thoughtfully. “Could be said of most tricks you've learned, at least at first. Don't force 'em, but keep some in your sash and leggings just in case.”

Also in the bundle is something remarkably less combat-oriented. “I made this incense a few days ago. It's not the highest quality,” she explains, handing you the sticks, “but it should be calming. I know you've had problems sleeping. If you're over there long enough, you may need this.”

“So,” she continues, her tone decidedly more grim. “You ready?”

Also, I'm trying to speculate how Tenkotsuki's 3rd technique would manifest itself.
The first boosts kidou spells through the blade.
The second stores a weaker version in the sheath.

Might the third involve re-sheathing the blade while a spell is stored? Though a sword drawing style doesn't seem to fit the kodachi very much.

“Thanks,” you tell your Captain. “I'll be expecting a big meal when we get back.”

“We'll rent out a noodle shop,” she replies, waving a hand casually. “You've gotta come back, though, so focus on that.”

After tucking away your incense behind your Lieutenant's badge, Yoruichi leads you to a small thicket behind the large hill that stands in the Seireitei: an execution ground, you've been told. Urahara's waiting for you there, along with a stern-looking man with black cornrows and a big mustache. His dark coat's collar is impressively managing to stay up under its own tremendous size. Behind them are two large rocks, each with a wooden post stuck into the side.

“Good to see you, Tessai,” Yoruichi greets the taciturn man. He merely nods, with a single word of reply.

“Indeed.”

Urahara draws his sword and releases it: in this form it possesses a straight, chisel-tipped blade and a bent handle, with a red tassel hanging from it. Its name is apparently “Benihime”.

“You should release your sword as well,” Kisuke warns you. “Where we're going, even a little advantage can save your life.”

Though Tenkotsuki seems a bit nervous at the thought of having to constantly be released for your own safety, you don't see much alternative. You release her, then carefully sheath her and tuck her back into your sash.

Yoruichi nods. “Good. Tessai will open the portal once every twelve hours. Since it should be in the same place each time, you'll just have to get back on that schedule. Clear?”

Kisuke nods. “And if that doesn't work, I'll go with plan B.”

“What's plan B?” you ask quietly.

“Portal to the human world, then have Yoruichi pick us up wherever we come out.”

The large man, Tessai, leaps atop one of the wooden posts and begins to chant in a low voice.

“Keikaigi.”

A crease in the air seems to draw itself between the ends of the two posts, and with a strange, rolling, ripping sound the crease opens into a ragged hole. Inside is darkness, and nothing else.

“Use hirenkyaku,” Kisuke tells you, “and follow me.”

Wait... he realizes you're using a Quincy movement technique? Ah... that must have been what the blood sample was for after all.

With the command word Prohibit, I'm guessing some of our abilities will debilitate an enemy somehow. Especially given what Tenkotsuki said a while back.

>“When there is an enemy you must defeat, we must simply prohibit them from expressing a power that exceeds our own. That is all you must know, for now.”

Maybe one of the later abilities can restrict an opponent capabilities or physical attributes to our own maximum in that area.

I'm guessing there will be a sword drawing one somewhere in the progression, it makes sense considering we have sword and sheath. We might get something for stealing or redirecting hostile kido.

You spend a few moments running through emptiness, until finally you see light ahead of you.

The first glimpse you have of Hueco Mundo isn't exactly thrilling. In fact, you'd be more likely to call it “depressing”. It's a desert, with silvery-white sand under a dark, starless sky. A crescent moon is the only light source you can see, and the air is deathly still. The portal spits you out at ground level, meaning it'll be easy to get back to. There's even a single, dead white tree standing nearby, serving as something of a landmark.

To three sides there are nothing but rolling sand dunes, but to the fourth you see a series of rock outcroppings.

“He went that way,” you declare.

“Good thinking,” Kisuke nods. “Out here we're easy to spot, so those rocky hills look like a good place to hide. He probably thought that too.”

“There's more,” you continue. “There's been sand disturbed here, and recently. It wasn't the wind, either. And then there's the smell...”

It definitely reminds you of something... no, not something you know that well. It's something Rosa remembers quite well. Though your mind realizes that the smell can't possibly be that strong, it stands out to you like nothing you've ever noticed before.

“What do you think of it?” Kisuke asks cautiously.

I'm not really sure what they're thinking by saying it smells good. Do they think that that actually fucking changes what the thing is going to be? “It's familiar,” you frown, “but definitely from my past life. It almost makes me feel... nostalgic, I guess?”

Kisuke replies with a nervous laugh. “Well... that's a little scary! I wonder, whatever did you used to get up to, Miss Riku?”

“It's the smell of blood, both Hollow and Shinigami,” Kisuke explains. Oh.

Well, fuck.

“And I feel like whatever's responsible is on its way back right now.”

You feel it too... a spiritual power that's undoubtedly a group of high-level Hollows. Like a Menos, but faster. Stronger, too. Looks like you don't have time to ponder why blood would make Rosa feel nostalgia, or why you felt that way a little yourself.

“Adjuchas,” Kisuke mutters. “Lovely. Riku, hide yourself with bakudō, we'll surprise them when they get close.”

“These guys are stronger than the Gillian you defeated,” Kisuke warns you. “Keep on guard.”

Using Kyokkō to its full effect, you wrap what little light there is in this place around yourself, as Kisuke does the same. You also both manage to nearly eliminate your spiritual presence at the same time, meaning that when the Hollows draw near they have no idea you're there.

A deer-like Hollow is out in the lead, followed by four large, vaguely humanoid Menos. The four seem much larger, though they're individually a bit weaker than the deer. Strangely, they seem to be fighting among themselves as much as they're chasing what you assume is their prey: one with an alligator-like mask just took a bite out of what looks like a gorilla's arm. And dear lord, how they're bickering!

“I'll just have to eat you first!” the alligator yells.

“Like you could manage the feat!”

A large, fat creature with a slug-like tail manages to cut the deer off by driving it to one side with a cero, then intercepting it.

“I have you now! Next I'll have that damn crocodile's head!”

These “adjuchas” may be more powerful than the Menos you killed a few days ago, at least according to Kisuke, but you're not sure they feel that different. In fact, the simple fact that they're physically smaller means it'll be easier to fight them like they were just a really big Shinigami, or a regular-sized Hollow. Which means hakuda will work on them now, in theory.

You decide that now's as good a time as any to test that theory.

One of the adjuchas takes a swing at the Menos deer with a large claw, so seeing an opening you step out of your cocoon of light and smack your fist into the Hollow's wrist. It stings a bit, but you manage to deflect the blow and put yourself in a good position to counter as your opponent over-extends. Tenkotsuki sinks into the ground, giving yourself a solid point to pivot around as you throw your whole body into a low, sweeping kick that takes the Adjuchas off its feet... and drops it right into the line of your blade as your body swings out of the way.

“Hadō 32: Ōkasen!” you hear Tenkotsuki shout in your mind as a wide arc of energy pulses from her blade, slicing the Adjuchas in half at the waist and leaving a deep scar in the desert floor. The Hollow screams and dies as you roll back up into a low crouch, Tenkotsuki in hand, as the second Adjuchas tries to slam itself into the deer-like Hollow. Its would-be victim stands petrified, as if trying to decide if there's any chance of survival here.

But that wasn't all you've got. Not just yet. In fact, you're already casting a different spell altogether.

“Bakudō 61: Rikujōkōrō!”

Six rods of yellowish light slam themselves deep into the second Adjuchas, around its fat gut. Right where its hole is. It stops immediately, turning its head to face you. “You bitch! I'll rend your cursed Shinigami flesh!”

The last of the four aggressive Adjuchas is on the ground behind you, with Benihime's blade rammed through its face: Kisuke prefers handling things like this quickly, it turns out. The Adjuchas you've pinned is straining against your un-incanted spell, which won't hold out forever.

You try out a high kick, feeling the blades hidden around your right ankle lance out from the wrappings and watch with some satisfaction as they embed themselves into the Menos' mask, cracking it badly and sending out a spray of blood. Its corpse hits the sand, twitching once. You recover the trio of impressive little blades one at a time, wondering what exactly they're made of to cut like that.

“Messy,” you comment, looking the corpse over. “Hadō 54: Haien.”

A large ball of violet energy blasts the corpse of the Adjuchas you just killed, taking a large chunk out of it. The whole body then proceeds to immolate from the heat, burning until it disappears into a little scatter of ash mixed in with the white sand.

"Better."

Kisuke sighs, giving his Zanpakuto a little flick to clear the dark Hollow blood from its blade. “You were just thinking that I'm full of shit, right? And that these Menos aren't any stronger than a Gillian?”

“It's 'cause you've gotten stronger without realizing it,” he continues calmly. “And that's fine. Some Lieutenants and Unit Commanders are a Bankai short of being Captains anyhow.”

Turning your attention, you face down the deer-like Adjuchas, who still hasn't moved an inch.

“I.. can't sense your spiritual pressure,” it exclaims in a clearly feminine voice, “but you two killed them like they were nothing! What... who are you?”

“Shinigami,” you explain somewhat stiffly. “Here on business. Why didn't you run or try to fight?”

The deer lowers its head, shutting its eyes. “I don't want to die here, but I also don't want to be eaten by the likes of those creeps either... we Adjuchas don't have many choices. Eat or be eaten.”

“But to be killed cleanly by a Shinigami... I can think of worse ways to go.”

“Do you have a name?” you ask calmly.

The deer Hollow stares at you for a moment in disbelief. “Apacci.”

“I don't feel like killing something that isn't fighting back, Apacci,” you explain. “It wouldn't feel right. So if you want it all to end... you'll have to attack us.”

Apacci nods quietly. “I see.”

The silence starts getting to you a little, and so you turn to leave along with Kisuke. Behind you, you can hear the steady hoofbeats in the sand as Apacci follows a few dozen paces behind.

“If we killed her here, would it even purify her?” you ask Urahara quietly.

He shrugs. “Maybe. As far as I know it's never been done.”

You nod. “Maybe we should keep things quiet for a while? Not kill too much while we're here?'

“Sure. Sounds best.”

As your trio close in on the rock outcroppings, you start to feel something...

The idea that she existed in her current state for over a hundred years is really straining my suspension of disbelief. Hueco Mundo doesn't really seeem like the kind of place where you can last that long without either becoming a vasto lorde (or much more likely) reverting/being eaten.

>>
>>39349471
This spiritual pressure, though partly hidden by its owner, is still as dark and oppressive as you've ever felt. It's a single Hollow, who observes you almost casually from atop a gigantic boulder. Apacci stops in her tracks, absolutely paralyzed... and even you're left stunned for a moment in the face of something that could easily kill you and almost everyone you've ever met. You get the feeling she wouldn't even be showing herself to you if it didn't suit her somehow... otherwise, you might already be dead.

She's small, and very definitely female: no larger than yourself, with a shock of blonde hair and a vaguely shark-like appearance. Her right arm is a wide, semi-serrated blade from the elbow down, of porcelain-smooth hollow bone, and her body is covered in smooth plates with the odd fin here and there. Beween her hair and inhuman mask, two very human eyes peer down at you.

Very suddenly, the Hollow is standing between you and Kisuke. You didn't even see her move.

“Amazing,” you mutter quietly.

“My my, to think I'd ever get to chat with a Vasto Lorde... lucky me,” Kisuke greets the stranger, careful not to sound rude or aggressive at all. Even for him, this must be an intimidating foe.

The 'Vasto Lorde', as he called her, looks the three of you over for a few seconds before speaking. “Why are you here, Shinigami? And why do you follow them, Adjuchas?”

“We're looking for a criminal from our world,” you explain to this mind-bogglingly powerful Hollow, who seems content to listen for now. You swallow your instinctive fear and continue. “As for Apacci here, I think she's still deciding her fate.”

The Vasto Lorde nods quietly.

“Have you seen any Shinigami around here lately?” Kisuke asks. “I mean, aside from the obvious? He'd have been wounded already, in all likelihood.”

“I have,” she replies simply, before turning back towards the rocks behind her.

“Come with me, all three of you.”

Apacci finally seems to snap out of her stupor. “Hey, wait a minute! I'm not just gonna follow you like that so you can eat me later, you know! Hey, are you listening!?”

The Hollow continues walking away. “I won't eat you,” she replies stoically over her shoulder, “so come with me.”

So thanks to Tenkotsuki's ability are we effectively capable of Quad incantation, by both ourselves and tenko doing a combined incantation? That would be pretty sick, especially if we had multiple barrier or seal spells that empower one another.
>>
>>39350474
If not, is this something we could work towards?
>>
>>39350578
Well, we could effectively incant something into our sheath before hand, then incant the same thing as Tenkotsuki does the same through the blade and use it all at once, right?
>>
>>39350578
I hope so. We'd need to get really good at Kido in order to do a dual incantation ourselves so we'd probably need to work on it either way.

Does anyone else think we should try and learn Shunpo? I doubt it's compatible with our own technique but maybe it'll give us insights to improving our speed and if needed we can use normal shunpo around anyone we're worried would suspect us using quincy techniques.
>>
>>39350712
Nah we should work on our own Hirenkyaku technique
>>
>>39350712
I think we should learn Shunpo because something something they work different, different weaknesses.

If we do pick up being able to hold four spells at once we should save that ability and only use two. Then have our bullshit moment, "Since when where you under the impression I could only ask two spells?"
>>
>>39350231
Not really seeing much alternative, you and Kisuke follow the Vasto Lorde deeper into the maze of rocks. Apacci follows as well, looking around nervously for an ambush. Eventually, the Hollow leads you to a small, camouflaged door that leads down a flight of dimly-lit stairs. At the bottom is a better-lit room, where your guide is welcomed by a pair of Adjuchas: a lion-like being with a golden mask, and a long, snake-like Hollow with a feather-like crest on its head.

“Welcome back, ma...” they begin to greet before laying eyes on you.

“What's a Shinigami doing here?” the lion growls angrily... it's a female voice, despite the fact that she has a mane.

The serpent merely eyes you warily.

“These two are guests,” the Vasto Lorde explains. “They came for the one I killed.”

“Do you have evidence?” Kisuke asks.

In response the Hollow produces half a Shinigami uniform, heavily stained with blood. Kisuke lets out a low whistle. “Seems he's dead alright. I'll have to confirm it, but this should help.”

“Why did you bring us here?” you ask, wondering what would have been so difficult about simply explaining the situation to you.

“I am Halibel,” she explains, “and this is my home. You may rest here for a while. Then you will leave.”

“As for you... Apacci, was it?”

The deer-like Hollow starts at the mention of her name. “Y... yes?”

“You may stay here as our comrade.”

“Comrade?” Apacci repeats. “What does that mean? I'm not taking orders from you or anything, so don't get any smart ideas!”

“Ingrate,” the serpent hisses.

“It's nothing like that,” Halibel insists. “This arrangement suits all four of us, does it not? If the strength of one is insufficient, isn't having comrades a boon?”

Apacci seems to be considering the point.

You set a little bit of aromatic incense wood in a candle sconce on one of the walls, and find your Hollow hosts surprised at the smell it produces. Yoruichi must've been bullshitting you, this stuff is great! Even Kisuke seems a little more relaxed as he sits with Benihime across his knees, deep in meditation.

As for you, it makes sense to set into cleaning Tenkotsuki and the knives your Captain gave you. You draw your blade, which causes the three Adjuchas to withdraw carefully on instinct as the Vasto Lorde peers at you thoughtfully. But to their surprise, you remove Tenkotsuki's handle, and begin wiping down her blade with a cloth you brought for just such an occasion. The little bits of grit and darkened blood come off easily, and the incense makes it easy to relax as you perform the task. And Tenkotsuki herself seems to be enjoying the attention.

“Your sword...” Halibel observes. “You treat it well. Better than the one I killed.”

You nod quietly as you tap one of Tenkotsuki's retaining pegs back into place. “Of course. Tenkotsuki is a part of me, and yet has her own personality. Her own thoughts, and feelings.”

“Oh?” the lion-headed Adjuchas growls. “And just what part of you is she anyway, Shinigami? Your blood lust?”

“Mila Rose,” Halibel cautions her junior, who seems to settle in a little.

“Of course, ma'am.”

“Well, she's difficult,” you begin, “she talks too much, and she has absurdly high standards. I guess I'd say she's my pride.”

“Your pride?” Apacci repeats.

You nod, more certain now than you were even a moment ago. “My pride, my self-respect, my dignity. She's the part of me that was screaming while I struggled to survive in the Rukongai, the part of me that was ashamed whenever I was too weak to look out for myself. And she's the part of me that always pushes me to improve.”

You can feel that Tenkotsuki's supremely satisfied at hearing your words. A little voice even seems to promise you something “spectacular” when you get a chance to train with her again. It must make her really happy, you seeming to understand her nature like this despite her demeanor being totally different from yours.

The snake seems to curl up on herself a little, as if resting. The lion still looks at you carefully, but it feels like she's convinced you aren't about to kill her or her companions. It doesn't take long for vigilance to be replaced by unconsciousness, as even Kisuke and finally Apacci drift off into an uneasy sleep.

It takes you only a few moments to find the comfiest place in the room: which is leaning right up against Apacci's flank. There's some soft fur there, which certainly beats the hard stone floors. Halibel eyes you with what looks like amusement as the deer-like Menos shifts in her sleep.

“You seem well settled,” she comments... was that a joke?

You nod quietly. “I have some questions, if you don't mind talking.” You take her silence as an invitation.

“What exactly is a Menos,” you ask, “and what are you, Miss Halibel? Why are yo so different from the other Menos I've encountered?”

“Hollows devour other souls to fill their own emptiness,” Halibel explains. “Menos are the result of some Hollows turning that hunger towards each other. I do not know why.”

“Rarely, a Gillian will be dominated by a single individual ego among the mass of hundreds of souls, which drives the beast to devour its lesser brethren. These become Adjuchas, a more powerful level of Menos. However, this comes at a price: if an Adjuchas ever ceases to consume its peers, it permanently reverts to a mindless Gillian.”

“And Vasto Lorde?” you continue. “How did you get so strong?”

“A Vasto Lorde is the result of an Adjuchas which has reached the level of power where it no longer needs to kill and eat. It is a rare exception to the rule that one must kill to survive in Hueco Mundo.”

“I know of one other like me. Be grateful you did not encounter him first.”

You nod to yourself, the movement a little slower than you'd intended. Lazier, as if your head were suddenly heavier. “An' why're you... well, like you?”

“Who said all Hollows were unthinking, unfeeling hunters?”

You're awakened in the “morning” by Apacci, who's found you sleeping against her side.

“You...” she mutters, unsure what to say next. “I... fine. I don't care.”

“Very gracious of you,” you offer, feeling your neck pop a little. “Be good, Apacci.”

The Menos brushes you off as you leave to join Urahara and Halibel, who has apparently just agreed to give him a small blood sample. Though she tries to hide it, it almost feels like Apacci is sad to see you go. After all, you did save her from getting devoured, and you showed her mercy. It's understandable that a Hollow in that position could have mixed feelings.

“Ready to go home?” Kisuke asks, tucking a small vial of Vasto Lorde blood and a stained uniform into a little bag he brought along.

You nod. “So what's the plan to get back?”

Halibel faces you, her eyes meeting yours. Still, surprisingly human. “I will teach you how we move between spaces,” she declares. “We call this a Garganta.”

It takes some time to learn, you're not entirely sure how long. But after a while you and Kisuke start to get the hang of the technique, until Kisuke manages to rip open a hole into the human world.

“Yoruichi should be able to find us pretty easily,” he tells you. “We should head back.”

And then you're back in the human world, on a high hill overlooking Kyoto in the spring. It doesn't take very long at all for your Captain to track you and Kisuke down, just as you were told. Returning to the Seireitei, you find that your whole Division seems excited to know just what you and Kisuke did even despite the death of your target. And indeed, Kisuke's testing tells you definitively that the uniform Halibel handed you belonged to Yoshiwara Shinsaku.

And true to her word, Yoruichi buys out an entire night's worth of noodles and booze to celebrate your success. You graciously allow Captain Ukitake to eat there as well, having accidentally interrupted his meal. Amid all the celebration for a job well-done, something still bothers you.

“What's up?” Yoruichi asks. “You seem a bit off.”

You shake your head, setting down a half-finished cup of sake. “Why did he do it? What was his grudge with the Kuchikis even about? What was worth all that?”

Your Captain bites her lip. “I'm pretty sure I know, but this may be one of those things you should learn for yourself. The central Library is still open, I'll let you use my credentials.”

At Yoruichi's advice, you find yourself at the central library of the Seireitei. The history section is divided up into many topics and time periods, meaning you can approach this in a number of ways. From what you've heard the Yoshiwara had a grudge against the Kuchikis, so their family histories would be a good place to start. As it turns out, the Yoshiwara used to serve the Kuchiki, several centuries ago. Then they were officially reprimanded, and eventually lost their high standing.

After an hour or two more of searching, it's pretty clear to you now what this was all about. Records of events in the living world at the time of the Yoshiwara's downfall show that the usual bloodletting amongst humans spiraled out of control for the two decades or so prior to 1600. After hundreds of years of small conflicts between Daimyo, a warlord managed to unite most of Japan with an extended campaign. Tens of thousands were killed in the endeavor, on top of the usual mortality rate from disease, famine, natural disasters, and more mundane causes. Similarly, 1600 itself saw the battle of Sekigahara, which claimed thirty thousand lives all at once. Both of those together, however, don't even compare to the invasion of Korea, which was bookended by those two conflicts. Over six years one hundred thousand or more Japanese soldiers died, alongside many hundreds of thousands of Koreans and Chinese. All told, perhaps a million were killed as a result of the failed invasion.

Cross-referencing those events with historical records from the Central 46 in the Seireitei makes the gravity of the situation clear: in order to maintain balance, similar numbers of souls must be entering and leaving the afterlife at any point in time. During the wars of the last two decades of Sengoku, not enough souls were leaving the Soul Society... which led to the largest series of purges in the Rukongai since record-keeping here began a thousand years ago.

>>39353063
The official censure of the Yoshiwara came at the height of the conflict in Korea, for what the Kuchiki's then-leader deemed “gross dereliction of duty”.

They were reprimanded for refusing to kill civilians, even to balance the cycle of life and death. That's the old grudge that led Third Seat Yoshiwara Shinsaku to commit his crimes: what he no doubt felt was the wrongful punishment of his family.

It's strange. You went to Hueco Mundo expecting to fight one mindless monster after the next, but it wasn't at all what you expected. The bleakness of the dark, empty landscape itself, the hopeless cycle of sustained violence between its inhabitants, and the fact that there are apparently a few Hollows who think and feel not too much unlike yourself all surprised you. Hell, you even left them your incense as a parting gift, which is almost certainly unprecedented in the history of the Soul Society.

And then there was Yoshiwara himself: though he definitely committed crimes, wasn't what the Kuchiki family did to his own just as reprehensible?

Yoruichi was right. It's a lot to think about, and there are no real “answers” she could have given you.

Nobody involved was fully "in the right", and it's a little concerning that you can see such a thing happening again even now.

And with that I'm done for the night. Hope you had fun, and we'll continue same time on Thursday!

Archive is up on sup/tg/, and if you've got any questions you can try and sneak 'em in on page 10.
>>

If that were true we'd have been all over a certain member of the Shiba clan.
>>
>>39353189
so pissed she wasn't xrd
>>
>>39353210
Thanks for running.
>>
>>39353210
It's been a blast, looking forward to Thursday! Thanks for running. How many Kido do we know of the various types? Have we learned how to heal yet or do we have to brave the 4th barracks for that?
>>
>>39353210
Thanks for running dude.

WW2 is going to cause massive intake of souls.

Probably going to need massive purges then too.

3+ million Japanese dead, 500k korean, 10-20million chinese, almost 1 million Philippines, 1 million misc islander groups.

Those are the areas the Japanese were active in.
>>
>>39353189
Baiken is top tier.

>>39353210
Was good thread. Looking forward to the next.
>>
>>39353210
So what were he chances of us actually meeting Yoshikawa alive? Also since he's not around to monologue, what was his goals with hell and fleeing to somewhere this dangerous?
>>
>>39353268
That was one of the books you could have taken with you. Unohana sent you something useful to teach yourself healing techniques based on western medicine.

In terms of kidou Riku's comfortably in the 40's and 50's, with a little dabbling in the 60's. She could stand to improve a little. #61 was the highest spell she'd ever succeeded in casting.
>>
>>39353340
Riku needs to buckle down and git gud after meeting a Vasto Lord. How big is the gap in ability between us and Kiske at the moment?
>>
>>39353310
It all depended on who he had the misfortune of running into, and what encounters you had early on. It was possible to take him back alive, but that's just not how things panned out.

As for his goals? He was trying to summon something from Hell to attack the Kuchikis with despite that not being how Hell really works. He was a little "misguided" (read "unhinged"), as you would have seen had that encounter happened. As for fleeing to Hueco Mundo, his backup plan was contracting a Vasto Lorde to do his dirty work in exchange for all the souls they'd take.

He met his Vasto Lorde alright. She no-sold him.
>>
>>39353380
Respectable. He is, as he suggested, one bankai short of being a Captain. Riku is above average for a Lieutenant: much closer to Renji than to Omaeda.
>>
>>39353413
Was old King Death on the list of possible encounters?
>>
>>39353291
>WW2 is going to cause massive intake of souls.
Here's another question for the ages: What if Hell had an overabundance of souls?
>>
>>39353464
I debated it, but yes. He was 4.

Also, I'll be updating the character sheet for Thursday. We'll also be moving into the Bakumatsu period, for those who are familiar: not all that long before Kisuke's promotion. Good chance to study swordsmanship.
>>
>>39353570
Is there a possibility to create a new Hirenkyaku technique?
>>
>>39353552
We have no idea what Hell even is, but I assume they'd just straight up obliterate souls if that was a risk.
>>
>>39353570
Neat. I'm looking forward to dealing with shit hitting the fan.
>>
>>39353612
Depends on what you're trying to do.

At some point you and Yoruichi will likely be creating a technique together, but aside from that and your sword's abilities I haven't really created any new techniques.
>>
>>39353570
Looking forward to the world wars. Are we going to witness firsthand the devastation wrought by the Japs on the Chinese and Koreans? Or the bombings? Are we going to be picking up souls in the aftermath? Or busy fighting our own battles?

Feel free not to answer.
>>
>>39353697
I hope we have to deal with a war of our own in the mortal realm. Dealing with legions of Hollows as bombers fly over head and buildings burn around us would be pretty amazing.
>>
>>39353697
Yes, yes, yes, and yes.

Lemme put it this way, it's gonna be a REALLY busy time.
>>
>>39347524
He's a dick due to his circumstances. Byakuya is trapped in one of the most classic conflicts of Japanese drama, the conflict between Giri (duty to others) and Ninjo (ones own emotions). He has a duty to his house, and everyone in it, to act in the best interests of the family. A duty which he already violated twice, first by marrying a commoner, and then later by unilaterally adopting his sister in law into the family after his wifes death. But Rukia is his wifes sister, he cares for her deeply, and if he were anyone but the head of the house, if he weren't trapped by duty, he would probably have thrown in with 15 in a heartbeat.
He could do to lighten up, but he IS a good man, and the over-seriousness is probably at least partially due to the fact that he's still grieving his wife over a century later.
>>
>>39353679
Was thinking something like gather a LOT of Reiatsu in the feet and legs then release it for a powerful forward dash kind of move
>>
>>39353732
I'm getting pretty hype then.
>>
>>39353732

Hollows will feed well then.

This meeting will play all sorts of weird interaction with the future. Let alone with having a few captains able to travel to HM easily.
>>
>>39353732
Hope you did your research then because of all the places where war atrocities were committed Japan and its neighbors were high on that list.

That being said I am mega hyped for it.
>>
>>39353778
Jeez....It'll probably be awkward when we eventually meet Harribel and the Tres again when they've joined Aizen's forces....Think we could talk them into deserting and joining SS?
>>
>>39353816

Doubt it. Her reason for joining Aizen was completely rational.

She wanted order and an end to the unending violence. Only someone like Aizen could do so.

She is just likely to be more open minded when she meets him the first time.
>>
>>39353816
I don't think we'll ever get them to join SS simply because I don't think the SS would allow it.

It'll be a fairly messed up situation. I kind of hope we can save them and Stark, but I have a feeling that's going to be absurdly difficult.

Well, here's the score on social links:
>Shihōin Yoruichi considers you a close friend and partner in crime.
>Urahara Kisuke seems friendly, but you also get the sense he has a more clinical interest in you.
>Shiba Kūkaku seems to think you're okay. She mostly seems to trust your Captain, though.
>Shiba Kaoru considers you her friend.
>Nikko Kai would never admit it, but he considers you a friend.
>The Patrol Corps will listen to you, out of equal parts fear and respect.
>The Omaeda family affords you a grudging respect.
>Captain Unohana blames you for the death of her previous Lieutenant.
>Shaolin Fēng is angry at you.
>Many people in the Seireitei know your name, if nothing else about you.
>Tia Halibel thinks you're a decent person, and at least mildly interesting.
>Apacci is grateful to you, and wouldn't mind seeing you again.
>Mila Rose and Sun-Sung would tolerate you a whole hell of a lot, on a good day.
>Old Man Genocide still doesn't know you stole his sandals.
>Lieutenant Aizen has noticed you.
>>
>>39353932
>That last social link.
Well it was bound to happen eventually.

How much have we interacted with the other Lieutenants?
>>
>>39353932
>Old Man Genocide still doesn't know you stole his sandals.
Good let's keep it that may for another 100 years or so.

He must never kno-
>Lieutenant Aizen has noticed you.
FUUUUUUUU!
>>
>>39353990
It's only been a few days. There hasn't been an official meeting yet, though there will be at some point.

And I'm now officially out of gas.
>>
>>39353994
When we eventually leave SS or get exiled we must sneak into his bedroom and leave a note...
"Sorry for stealing your sandals that one time in the Rukongai ,Hugs and kisses,Riku"
>>
>>39353878
Of course, the hilarious downside is that Aizen looks down on hollows even more than most shinigami, and he had no intention of letting his forces actually live longer than their immediate use to him.

Seriously, whether or not he was right on the big picture, Aizen seems to actively want to kill his own subordinates.
>>
>>39353932
>Lieutenant Aizen has noticed you.

Welp, time to start panicking and never truly stop. And our presence, and rather anomalous strength is probably going to change up his plans.
>>
>>39353932
And, my reactions.
>About what I expected. Could be better
>Really ought to work on that
>We really need to hang out with her more.
>Good
>Tsun
>Excellent
>Bout as good as we can hope for
>She can really hold a grudge. We died, woman, let it go.
>This amuses me
>As it should be
>Good
>Very good
>Not bad
>I hope he finds out, maybe a few decades after we make captain, or never at all
>...shit.
>>
>>39354050
>The residents of Rukongai tell tales of the legendary heat wave that lasted four weeks, some claim a demon was released inside the Gotei 13, as cries of "Impudent Whelp!" where heard throughout the first 30 districts. No one knows what mollified the creature.
>>
>>39354100
If there's one thing we know for sure about Unohana, it's that she doesn't let things go. Also she's completely insane by our standards, given her greatest regret is impeding Zaraki's ability to murder everyone.

It must be done now! Gonna remember this for when we do eventually leave/get exiled
>>
Mna i'm just waiting for when Rosa Rosette's memories start coming back and Riku remembers when Yoruichi killed all of her close friends/comrades.....
>>
>>39354100
>>I hope he finds out, maybe a few decades after we make captain, or never at all

>"Kusajishi Riku, I have a gift for your promotion to Captain"

>Its a pair of sandals.

>The look in the Old Man's eyes is nothing short of heart-stopping
