“So let me get this straight,” Oster sets his hands down, gently placing his knife on the bed for lack of a better places to sit it.
“You want to get in using Eugene the Yellow. The Dandelion Wizard.”

“Well when you put it that way he sounds unreliable,” you say. “But he’s a nice bloke even if he is a little odd. And as a wizard he should be able to get attendance to the ball. Nobody really wants to offend a wizard, after all.”

“But he’s a wizard! You know what they say about them. We can’t afford to have our plan hinge on their whim. The best plan is just to do what I suggested and have me impersonate a lesser noble.”

“But Oster,” Hiss butts in, still annoyed over having her own plan dismissed. “Surely I can impersonate a noble much better than you can. I won’t need a mask either.”

“Naturally, your Highness. But a great deal of scrutiny would be placed on you and you would likely be unable to approach the ambassador.”

“Bah,” Hiss says. “There is no human obstacle that can stop me. And I don’t want anything to do with wizards.”

Both of them suddenly look towards you. What? Is this your job now? Since when?

On an unrelated note, is it possible we could take advantage of our potion making or his magical curse that seems to rub off on every magical potion he makes to impersonate a lesser wizard
>>
>>39330341
Probably not without a lot of potions and practice. Not enough prep time to try. Although we could ask him the steps to start being a wizard( snake domain)
>>
>>39330341
I don't see much value in impersonating a wizard that seems to have no control over his own powers
>>
>>39330381
We know that you have to kill the guy with the domain if its already taken, and ALL of the powerful domains are taken immediately after the dude who had it prior dies (snake domain is definitely powerful and definitely taken)

>>39330386
Nobody wants to fuck with a wizard not in control of his own powers, thats how cities get burned, flooded with mead, or coated in dandelions. We could always become the wizard of lewdness, however.
>>

>implying there actually is one until it is taken by us, after all no one knows they exist.

>Recommend the Eugene plan.

You shake your head.
"No, it's got to be the wizard. Nothing else works as well."

Hiss grumbles but doesn't say anything against you. You belatedly realize that she isn't sure about her own plans at all, unable to really answer any of the criticism that Oster had directed towards them. She doesn't have any real idea about how to progress from here. Why else would she actually take your advice?
"Very well. I guess we're in search of a wizard."

Oster sighs.
"As the princess wishes. But how are we even going to find him? I don't know if you've noticed this Cennen, but Taldenral is huge. He could be anywhere."

> "We know that he took the coach here." This sends all three of you to go ask around there.

> "I'm sure that it'll be easy for a man of your abilities." This sends Oster away for the day and leaves you and Hiss together in Taldenral.

> "I have an inkling but it'll probably only work if I'm alone." This separates Cennen from the others in order to do something strange.

I doubt that snake domain is taken considering that nobody knows they exist. And I get the feeling that wizards are inherently different from normal humans even before they learn their own powers but I'm not certain

although I wish I knew the specifics of what I'm voting for
>>
>>39330524
What i''m saying no snake would trust a wizard with snake domain. Hiss might, even if we're a wizard in training and snake is lost to us(doubtful) we could steal water as that wizard is mostly dead.
>>
>>39330528
Fair enough, I'm trying not to do that.
It's Cennen tooling around with the dandelions he still has, seeing if that has any effect or if Eugene is aware of his own domain that much.
>>
>>39330547
Unfortunately we missed the boat on that, Eugen said there are adepts who wait years for the original wizard of a domain to die, water is crazy powerful and is almost certainly owned.
>>
>>39330572
Depends on how they register deaths. Anyways learning how to be a wizard if possible is worth a shot if nothing else. Hell we could try to esoteric domains like Poison, dragons, alchemy, shadows, skins or anything else.

> "We know that he took the coach here." This sends all three of you to go ask around there.

"Why don't we start with the coach? We know that he rode it out from the river stop on the main road to here. It shouldn't be too hard for you to find the station for us. It'll be on the road we came in on."

"No need," Oster says. "I know where it is. I didn't know he took the coach, is all."

"He wasn't exactly subtle about his passing," Hiss says, no doubt referring to the giant dandelion the two of you had passed.
"So let's get going, already. We only have a day."

The three of you leave the large inn, Oster passing a signet to one of the innkeepers as you leave. Does he still have your money? He totally does, doesn't he? You'll really need to get it back off of him soon.

Taldenral is as huge and chaotic in the morning as it was in the afternoon, crowds of people thronging in every possible direction. Oster leads the way down the streets with Hiss dragging behind after you. She's looking increasingly prickly as you continue onwards, clearly aggravated by the presence of so many people pushing in so closely. You see her hands twitch, as if struggling to strike a passerby on their own accord.

You stop but don't draw close to her, keeping politely just outside of arm's reach. You can't reach her and she can't reach you. This is probably perfect.
"Woah Hiss, just calm down."

"I AM calm. Nothing is wrong."

"Uhuh. Alright. Well while you're busy being calm, just remember what you said to me yesterday about needing to conquer your fears."

"Are you implying that I am scared?"
She glares at you and picks up the pace.

"No, of course not. And all these people? Way more scared of you than you are of them."
If they had any sense, that is.

"Yes, no surprise there. That is as it should be. All is as it should be."
Her hands stop moving and she stops throwing out quite as many glances around the crowd.
"What a nest of vermin."

She matches her pace with yours, walking only half a foot away from you. This keeps up until Oster leads you both to the station.
By the time you and Hiss catch up to him, he's already talking to one of the stable hands there, a filthy-looking man a little younger than you.
"Yeah, I seen him. Bit hard to miss in all that yellow get-up, innit?"

"Do you know where he went?"

"How would I know?"
Oster gives him a signet and he suddenly changes his tune.
"Well, I DID hear him blabbing to the girls he was with. That he had business with some noble broad if they didn't have any place to stay."

Oster's Ophi-face smiles broadly.
"And what noblewoman would this be?"

The stable hand feigns shock.
"Oh! I can't seem to remember. Seems to have slipped my memory. Maybe if I had a little bit of another refreshe-"

Hiss steps past Oster and grabs the informant by the neck. He protests but she pushes something in his throat with her thumbs and he falls to his knees spluttering.
"You're not even worth the first one," she says. "So speak or die."

Oster is already pulling back his poncho to show the hilt of his sword, having caught on remarkably quickly. You settle for just trying to look mean and hardcore in the back.

The man's speech is broken up by wheezing and he's looking around frantically for help but none of his fellow hands within the stable seem to be around right now.

"Liar!"

"No, your highness." Oster says. "I think he's telling the truth. Trying to get another coin out of us, eh? What were you going to do, just feed us a lie?"

Hiss' fangs extend and you know exactly what is going through her head. She is going to kill him right here, right now, in the middle of the stable.

"Wait, Hiss stop!"
She whips around to face you, her eyes blanked over by slitted pupils. You look her right in the eye, safe in the protection your Bane allots you.
"Think about this. We can't afford to be chased out of the city right now, we only have this one chance!"

She pauses, completely still. She blinks and when the eyelids come up, her eyes are completely human once more.
Oster kicks the man in the ribs and knocks him to the ground.
"Don't get any ideas mate."

"Do you really want to end up in a dungeon again?"

Hiss flinches back as if you had struck her across the face. And she certainly acts like you had, looking at you with a brief look of raw betrayal before her face closes up.
"An excellent point," her voice is flat. She turns away from you and kneels over the fallen man, trapping him in her gaze.
Oster stares daggers at you in the awkward silence that follows while she maims the man's soul.

She gets to her feet, looking a little past your shoulder instead of at your face. The man is still unconscious, his left eye twitching.
"We want a Lady Trebain."

"So he did remember?"
Oster sheathes his sword.

"No, it was only in his unconscious memory. Now he has truly forgotten it. And us. I've bitten away the last three days and his brother's name."

Sorry about the delay, RL stuff came up.

Man, you probably didn't need to bring that up. You and her never really talked about what exactly happened to her in Melire. Something that only happened to her because she was saving you.
From herself, but still.

"Ah, look, sorry. I didn't mean to say that. Are you alright?"

"I'm fine. Let's go."

"No, really, I mean it!"

Her forced blank tone shatters immediately.
"Then why bring it up? Do you think I'm being weak? Is that it? Or do you just want to remind me?"

"No, that's not it! It just slipped out, I was being an idiot-"

"No shit! But don't worry about it Cennen, I'm sure you'll just find some way to get me warm and dumb so I can forget all about this. And then you even get to touch me all you want. That's basically all you're really looking for, isn't it?"

She doesn't give you a chance to respond and just stalks out of the stables, Oster following her. You expect the false merchant to look triumphant but he mostly looks confused.

You run after her immediately and not just because you don't know the way back to the inn. You are not letting some more drama just sprout up out of nowhere, you thought you were past this.

You catch up to her and step in dangerously close. Her mouth hangs open and her hands twitch but she can't actually attack you. You look her right in the eye, getting well within biting range to do so.
"I really am sorry. I didn't mean that and I really didn't mean any of the words you placed into my mouth. I thought we were past this."

"Evidently not."

"Do you really think that I'd ever think you're weak? When you killed the wizard and took me back from the Master? You're the strongest person here Hiss and I've never doubted that, even for a second."
Aw shit, you messed that up didn't you. It doesn't sound right at all.

And yet her face softens and she doesn't step back.
"Of course. I don't know why I attributed that to malice when it could be explained away by stupidity. You may consider yourself forgiven."

She actually smiles and you have to wonder how often anyone says anything like that to her at all. Not that she's just a rightful princess blahblah, but that she is strong and valued.

She takes your hand in hers while Oster awkwardly orbits the two of you, clearly unsure of what to do here.

"So," you start, unwilling to disturb the moment too much. Hiss clearly has some sort of baggage about last night but it'll be better to bring that up later.
"Do we have any idea where this lady is?"

"We can just go uptown, can't we?"
Hiss looks suddenly confused, as if she hadn't actually thought about this at all.

Oster shakes his head.
"There are several 'uptowns', as I suppose you could call them. It really depends on the district."

"Great. I guess we can just ask around?"

"Makes sense. It shouldn't be too hard to find someone who knows of them."

She's still holding your hand, her grip cold and icy. She seems to be rather cold in general today, having not had the chance to really take in the sun. Just the warmth of a hand is probably well appreciated.

You just stand there for a time before you decide to broach the subject.
"Did you want to talk about last night?"

"Not really. But I guess we have to."

"Well you brought it up before."
Oh man, where do you even start here?
"Is there something you want to talk about?"

She wrinkles her brow.
"Yeah, I guess there is. The whole situation is just uncomfortable."

"In what way?"

"When I've eaten and I'm so warm, I...I don't think I'm in my right mind. I'm not thinking the same way. It's not because I'm scared in this case, I just don't like it. I'm not in control of myself when I'm like that."
She pauses for nearly a full minute.
"So when I wake up and I remember all of, all last night, sometimes it doesn't even feel like me."

The retort 'it certainly FELT like you to me' springs to your mind almost instantly and you have to bite down on a reflexive chuckle at just how inappropriate it would be.
"I get it. But you don't mind just an arm now, do you? You look cold."

You offer to put an arm over your shoulders, one which she quickly accepts. She actually steps in close, her side pressed against yours.
"I think you're getting the wrong message from all this."
She does her best to sound reproachful but is immediately undone by her own actions.

"No, I swear I'll keep it in mind for the future. You don't have to worry about it."

"Thanks."

Yeah but staying on her while he was clearly pissed about it not only made him go from dislike to hate. I did the write in before but we have to draw a line and be mindful of what he can do.
