You are Alaric Sepheran, an Astartes of the Blood Angels chapter. You have served faithfully for many, many years, and are a respected veteran of the chapter and a member of Master Dante’s honor guard. In the last few weeks you have been suffering from dreams of a terrible nature, and as you finally reached out to seek aid, you have been chosen by the Chapter Master for an important mission: to act as the Blood Angel’s representative on the world of Eskaton, to act as their guard and adviser in time of war, in payment for a debt incurred a millenium ago.

Announcements:

Next thread will be Sunday, April 19. The last few days have been pretty rough, so this thread will be shorter than normal. Please consider all responses for this thread to be “open” in addition to any options I may or may not add.

We’ll be using the Heroquest 2 ruleset for any dice-rolling we have to do (uses a d20). The standard here seems to be the best of three rolls, with crits taking precedence. A two-page summary of the Heroquest 2 rules is attached to this post.

You wake the morning after the eventful dinner, the soft mattress and linen sheets a new experience for you, completely unprecedented in all your years of service. You allow yourself a moment to look out the thin gauzy curtains towards the rising sun, the temperature warm and pleasant even this early in the day.

so when is the duel scheduled to take place? I think we should at least be present for it.
>>
You rise and dress yourself, intending to get a better idea of the forces at Eskaton’s disposal. The two armsmen guarding your door greet you in subdued tones as you pass through the large exit, entering into the long stone floored hallway of the governor’s palace.

You find your way to General Markham’s quarters without much difficulty, the general already dressed and ready for the day even this early. He is a tall man, still small compared to your height, but stern without appearing too harsh. His hair is greying at the temples, but he still appears young and hale.

“Good morning, Brother Alaric,” he says with a smile as he opens the door for you, “do come in.”

The smaller door forces you to stoop slightly to make it inside, but General Markham affects not to notice.

“How may I help you?”

“I was hoping that you might speak with me for a few moment’s about Eskaton’s defenses.”

General Markham nods and gestures you to a seat, which creaks alarmingly as your weight settles.
“Well,” he begins as he takes a seat across from you, gathering his thoughts, “I suppose I should start with the larger picture and work inward from there.” He looks at you for permission to continue and you nod slightly to him.

“The High Admiral of the subsector sets the policy for all the worlds, and it is his judgment that even with the relatively high level of forces available to us, we cannot depend on reserves in order to assure our safety.”

He glances at you.

“Particularly in light of some threats which complicate warp travel or eliminate it entirely. As such, we are expected to be able to maintain ourselves against major threats: for example, one world must be able to defend itself against a threat organized by a system. That is not to say that we must be capable of defeating it in its entirety, but we must be able to deny them a decisive victory indefinitely.”

“And that is the reason behind Eskaton’s titan maniple?”

The general shifts. “Yes. In part at least.”

You decide to let the matter lie -- for now, at least. “That means you must have a substantial PDF presence.”

The other man nods and sets his hands in his lap as he looks at you. “We have fifteen major ‘hives’ on Eskaton, though they are really not what other worlds would call a ‘hive’. Each one has a permanent garrison of five PDF regiments and is responsible for maintaining a reserve of another ten.”

He makes a small gesture. “We are an entirely mechanized force, Brother Alaric. We are not large, but the Admiral, General Reynolds, and I agree that quality is more important than quantity. We are well-equipped enough for each regiment to operate independently, with its own armor and air assets.”

backing this but explain it in that you've rarely seen a IG regiment from their world and IG are supposed to be the best of the PDF.
>>
“Are regiments generally recruited from their own hives?”

“Yes, for the most part each hive’s regiments recruit from their respective cities. There is some transference between them all, but it is generally on a small scale to account for individual circumstances, such as changing employment, marriage, or simply preference.”

You nod as he falls silent, quietly framing your next question in a way you hope will not give offense.

“I’m afraid that I have not had the chance to see a regiment of your soldiers in action. I assume that Eskaton must tithe a part of its PDF to the Imperium?”

“Yes, of course: as all worlds must.” General Markham smiles a little and gives you a look. “One of the capital’s regiments is conducting a series of battalion-level live fire exercise next month. You are more than welcome to come and observe.”

“I would be very happy to do so,” you reply with a smile. “It is rare that I get the chance to see other soldiers of the Imperium training for war.”

“It is good to see how others go about it. One way is not always the best in all things.”

You smile in agreement and shift tacks.

“You mentioned that the titan maniple was not just on Eskaton because of the High Admiral’s strategy?”

The general’s smile falters a little, and he shifts again in his seat. “It isn’t something we like to speak about,” he murmurs, “but I should not conceal it from you.”

He sighs and looks at you for a long moment.

“Eskaton has a long history with the Legio Titanicus, some say dating back to the Dark Age of Technology. For myself, I tend to doubt it, but the Mechanicus are touchy about such things, and they refuse to move the maniple out of respect for the past: one machine in particular has always been here, since time out of mind. Others have come and gone with the millenia, but it has been a constant. I have spoken to the men who pilot it, and they say it thinks; they call it alive.”

Another look passes between you. “You may understand my reluctance to divulge such information. They say it has been here since before the Great Strife.”

He shudders and shakes his head. “Such a thought is unnerving.”

Mechanicus are Heretics. Aristocracy will seem Slaaneshi, but they will not be. There will be war of succession, White Suns are Tzeenchian to the max and founded by Dark Mechanicus. That one machine is in the process of being awakened - read: demonified.

The heavy weight of the past lies between you both for several minutes, forcing you into silence as your thoughts turn to a grey ship with long, clean lines, its lance batteries heavy and silent in the black of space. You remember long dark hallways, here and there splotched with a mass of gore and a human body in unfamiliar armor with strange gear, mummified by vacuum--

“General Reynolds is the commander of our Imperial garrison,” he murmurs, breaking the silence. “Two regiments of Imperial Guard and other assorted assets, including the Adepta Sororitas. He has charge of defending the various Imperial facilities on Eskaton which do not fall under my purview.”

You force yourself from past memories and nod. “Such as the ground-based defenses?”

General Markham shakes his head. “No, those -- such as they are -- are manned by the PDF. We rely primarily on orbital platforms and our fleet to defend Eskaton again space-borne threats. It is Admiral Price’s belief -- and I agree -- that fixed ground-based fortifications are too vulnerable to bombardment. We would prefer to invest such funds in expanding our fleet and equipping more platforms.”

You smile at him after a moment, noting the look in his eyes. “I imagine that my predecessor asked the same questions.”

General Markham smiles broadly. “I was not the commanding general when Brother Phineas arrived a decade ago. But yes, when I became the commander several years ago we sat down and had a smilar conversation: a bit more technical, since he had already been on our world at least five years or so by then.”

“You got on well with him?”

“Yes. He was very quick and had a great interest in strategy. We counted him as a crucial adviser in our operations.”

“And the Imperial Garrison,” you continue after a moment, “are they rotated every few years or is it a permanent posting with only replacements coming in?”

“Permanent. The regiments are, at least. The stormtrooper company comes and goes, and often gets called off-world for months at a time. Most others stay on for a decade at least.”

“And those are all under General Reynold’s command?”

“Yes,” Markham replies, “completely so.”

“And is there someone to take charge in case this duel does not go his way?”

Markham sighs heavily and rubs his eyes. “Yes. I fear my friend was somewhat rash last night. I regret extremely that Lord Stefan spoke to you in such a way. It was inexcusable; but however that might be, Lord Stefan is an accomplished duelist.” He shrugs. “We will see what tomorrow morning brings.”

You nod and stand. “Thank you for your time, general.”

“Of course,” he replies, standing with you. “I am at your disposal.”

You give him a smile and turn to go.
