You walk into the Pokemon center. There’s a small television in the corner to keep you entertained while you wait. You and your friends hand your Pokemon to the nurse and settle onto the couch.

Jeanine takes the remote and sets it to the right channel.

An intro theme plays showing you, your friends, and your Pokemon. A logo splashes across the screen. “Real Pokemon Trainers.”

“Not the most creative title,” Clair comments.

Vance shushes her.

They show you training Nibbles, interspersed with quick segments hyping up your gym battle. The actual episode only focuses on your preparations, training, and talking with friends.

It ends on a cliffhanger, showing you entering the gym riding Nibbles. The preview for the next episode plays. “Will Kat manage to win despite Robin choking? Will their relationship survive?”

Robin shrinks into the couch. You hold her hand.

“Find out next time, on Real Pokemon Trainers!”

There’s a sudden flash of quick images going over your adventures that have been caught on film. Then the show ends.

Honestly, it didn't seem that great, but maybe that's because you already lived it.

The nurse comes back with a tray, holding your Pokemon. “Oh wow. You look just like that girl on TV.” She only caught the tail end of the scene.

You’re not too impressed with how the show has characterized Robin so far. Hopefully it’s better after.

You take out Nibbles to see how he’s doing. “It’s just a coincidence,” you tell her, avoiding letting her get a good look at you. You look over Nibbles as the nurse moves on.

He has a small, barely visible scar when he took the knockout blow. Nothing too major and it doesn’t seem to hurt him. If it had been a critical hit or a strong super effective one, you know he’d have more than just some superficial scarring.

Nibbles licks you, nearly lifting you off your feet.

“I guess you’re feeling fine,” you tell him. Still, you’re a little uncomfortable with him having a permanent mark like that from a battle.

You see Robin is chatting on the phone with Professor Fir. You walk over.

“Oh! Kat! I was just watching your show! Very interesting!” The professor waves at you. “I suppose you’ll want to get Dan and Levi back.”

He squints. “I can barely see it. Nibbles is pretty young still, I think something that small should clear up over time.” He looks concerned. “But that sort of only really appears when a Pokemon pushes beyond their limits. You’re being careful, aren’t you, Kat?”

You’re not sure you like the suspicious tone he’s using. You treat your Pokemon well.

You pass Clair and give her a knowing nod. She looks confused, but you think she’ll get it in a minute. You pull up in front of the camera, grabbing their attention.

“So how were the ratings? Are we doing well?”

Tim and Erin look up excitedly. Tim pulls up a small digital pad. “Well, the initial showings weren’t great, but word of mouth is spreading fast. There’s a lot of chatter on social media and the next airings are expected to get a lot of traction.”

Mr. Kroustou breaks his usual silence and chats with you too. “I told them we needed more marketing. The story unfolds when you marathon it.”

You glance up at him. “Is that why Robin looks so bad in the first episode?”

“Kat, darling. That’s just show business. You know it ends well, but the audience doesn’t. We left it on a cliffhanger and went a little overboard showing her as messing up, then in the next episode is more dramatic.” His tone is a little patronizing, but his logic seems sound. “You’d better be careful. Initial market research is showing her as very popular,” he teases. “She’s the underdog.”

Well, whatever gets you that much closer. You just want to get things to where Robin gets her new eye. “So where are we at for merchandising?”

Erin pulls up a pad with numbers you barely understand. “Well, it’s a pretty consistent formula that merchandising follows ratings like this. So if the next airing gets this many viewers, we-”

“What!” You see Vance yelling at Clair. “Do you have any idea what it’s been like?”

“I’m sorry! If I could take it back I would.” Clair pleads as she approaches him.

“Don’t touch him!” Jeanine slaps Clair, knocking her to the floor.

The camera pulls up just in time to see Jeanine run off into the forest. Vance’s face is covered in confusion, and he runs into the woods in a different direction. Clair chases after him. Robin just stands there, paralyzed.

At least the camera crew didn’t catch most of that.

Dave the cameraman looks to Mr. Kroustou. “I’m afraid they did.” He makes a hand gesture to where Jeanine was going and Haunter flies after her with a camcorder and boom mic. He turns to Dave, Tim, and Erin next. “Find the siblings. If we get good footage, we’re using this for sweeps.” He turns back to you again. “I’m sorry Kat. We have an obligation. People need to see this. It's authentic. It's raw!”

You don't have time to debate him. “Robin, help Jeanine.”

“O-okay!” She hitches her bag and runs after Jeanine.

You run after Clair. Maybe you can find her first. At the very least be there for her like you said.

You toss out a Pokeball as soon as you’re in the brush. “Raistlin, try to keep Haunter from finding Jeanine.”

He cocks his head. He wants to know how far he should go.

You run through the bushes. You see Erin, Tim, and Dave. Erin ‘accidentally’ gets in Dave’s way, then Tim ‘accidentally’ knocks the battery of the camera. He sees you and gives a subtle wave. You nod then run off after Clair.

They can’t keep him busy forever, but they’re buying a little time. You’re glad you talked to them before about this sort of thing.

You run around, searching for a sign of your friend. She and Vance must have gotten some good distance.

Wait! There she is. “Clair!” You yell out to her.

She keeps running. “Why did I listen to you! He hates me! Everything was just fine!”

Clair stops and turns around to face you. “I’m psychic, Kat. He was practically shouting hate at me.”

“Oh yeah, that’s why he stopped Jeanine.” You don’t back down. “People think and say hateful things when they’re mad. You know that.”

She sighs. There are still tears clouding her eyes. “Why did I have to tell him? Why did you make me promise?”

“He’s my friend too. He’s literally saved my life. He deserved to know.”

She sniffs. “He was happier not knowing. He was happier when he didn’t hate his sister.”

You give her a hug. “He doesn’t hate you. He’s just upset,” you repeat. You hope you’re telling the truth. Vance is a nice guy, but you saw how he got when dealing with the people that robbed his dad.

“He should. I’m a monster. I didn’t even want to think about this for so long.” She sniffs back a gross amount of snot. “I... maybe it’d be best if everyone just forgot I existed.”

You really don’t like the way she said that.

You hear the camera crew catching up. You could run off and try to distract them, but Clair is really vulnerable right now.

You think about when the Devon Corp agent took an anti-psychic drug. Clair mentioned she has some too, in the event she needs to shut down her powers or loses the ability to tune other people’s thoughts out.

You try not to, but the fact that she could probably make you just stop talking and walk away without remembering anything is a little scary. You push the thought away, hoping she didn’t catch that.
