~

Your newly raised creature droops its head low to the ground.

The amount of focus it takes to simply have this huge thing follow you has given you quite the splitting headache.

“This way.” Before you both fall to the ground, you lead the beast around your house and into your backyard.

The wet grass crunches as its pale body crashes into the ground. You briefly consider rounding up the other corpses you saw on your way back, but you doubt you have enough blood in your whole entire body to get them moving again.

Leaving your wet clothes by the entryway, except for your cloak which strangely has already dried completely, you head for your room before you too collapse to the ground.

“Sophia!” Ellie rushes out of her seat as soon as you enter the parlor room.

“I’m fine. I’m fine.” You brush her away, not in the mood to deal with her concerns. But she still insists on checking you for injuries.

You notice Laurent sitting on the couch deep in thought. Several large scratches and bruises spot his body, but nothing overly serious.

His heavy gaze meets your own, and you immediately know something troubling is on his mind.

You turn back to your doting apprentice. “Where’s Marissa?”

Laurent shifts uneasily in his seat.

“Upstairs, she didn’t want to talk…” Ellie comments as she looks at your battered and blood stained hands.

“Most of it isn’t mine.” You lie to assuage her fears. “Here.” You hand her your dagger. “Clean it off and put it back in my room.” You pull your other arm away from her grasp. “Go make sure Marissa is alright after that.”

Ellie carefully takes your weapon. “Right.” She politely nods and then quickly heads upstairs.

Laurent clears his throat. “You know, she just wants to help.”

That’s probably due to her not being able to contribute with the actual fighting.

“I know.” You shakily descend into a seat. “I’m exhausted, so I’m not going to beat around the bush. What happened?”

Laurent rocks back in forth in thought for a few moments. “Too much.” He shakes his head at his answer and sighs. “That…form that Marissa can take on, don’t you think she’s too obsessed with it?”

You sink further into your seat. Sleep is really calling out to you. “What makes you ask that?”

His mouth twists as if he tasted something bitter. “Listen, I know that I’m here to follow your orders, but don’t you think she’s dangerous? Don’t you think bringing back one of those things…” He points to the backyard. “Don’t you think it’s dangerous?”

There’s that word again, you just want to get to the bottom of this already.

You sit up. “What did she do?”

The room is entirely quiet. Only the water dripping from the rafters of your house can be heard.

“One of those things attacked us while we were searching for Aya.” He starts, not looking you in the eye anymore. “She used her aura to get it to kill itself.”

That must have been quite the sight, but it doesn’t sound dangerous at all, fascinating actually. But, of course, he’s not finished.

“I…felt the urge to obey that order of hers as well.” He finishes.

You finally get to the bottom of it. His concerns are legitimate, you shared them before you became immune to her aura, so you know how compelling Marissa can be in her form.

Combine that with his innate need to eliminate all things Occult, and you might have trouble in the future if you don’t take care of this properly right now. But is it right to get her to simply stop?

You stand and clutch your cloak with one hand. You’re thankful for the amount of control it gives you, even with Marissa, but not everyone is so lucky to have such a rare object.

“You’ll grow resistant to her the more you’re exposed to it.” You assure him.

“That’s fine for me, I’ve been exposed to similar things in the past.” He responds bitterly. “But what if someone who has no experience with the Occult gets caught in her aura?” He stands and towers over you. “What then!?”

You can’t say that you’re a fan of how heated he’s getting.

“Enough.” You state coldly, staring into his impassioned eyes. “That won’t happen. The sort of thing that happened today isn’t likely to happen again, so your concerns are exaggerated.” You belie your true thoughts. “So, enough.”

He shrinks from your cold anger and returns to his seat.

You head upstairs without another word, you really can’t say that went well at all.

As soon as you close the door to your room, you slump down at your desk to update your journal.

You slam your journal shut when you finish, and practically fly into your bed. This day is long overdue to be done with, and tomorrow holds more promise. You’re going to be delving into the inner realm for the first time with any luck, the first person that you know of to have ever done so.

Sleep comes swiftly and heavily, and thankfully once again without dreams.

The early afternoon sun unpleasantly greets your groggy eyes. You don’t recall ever sleeping that much time in your life. Maybe it was the blood loss?

You get dressed and head out of your room. The sound of a lively conversation downstairs lets you know that at least Ellie and Laurent are up as well.

A bleary-eyed Marissa steps out of her room slowly, still in her sleeping clothes.

“We’re delving later today, so wake up already.” You quip casually.

She smiles slightly and looks directly at you with unusual confidence. “I’m not the only one that slept in late, you know.”

Her forwardness is strange, but it isn’t the strangest thing about her this afternoon.

A thin and leathery black tail swishes back and forth lazily behind her, slightly different from the shadowy one you’ve seen on her before. She doesn’t even appear to be aware of it.

“Are you transformed right now?” You ask immediately.

“Hmm?” Her face lights up with realization. “Oh, this?” She grabs the tail with her hand. “It appeared after I returned back to my normal form yesterday.”

She twirls it in the air playfully. “I like it. Don’t you?”

This is just bizarre, you’re at a lost for what may be causing this to happen. But given what Laurent told you yesterday, it may not be the best for her to be walking around with that thing exposed.

You swear that whatever lines that exist between the realms get blurrier with each passing day.

You grab hold of her tail to examine it. “Interesting little thing…” A solid tug lets you know that it’s real, and that Marissa can feel through it. “Just don’t go showing it off in public, and be sure to keep it hidden from people we can’t trust.” You relinquish her tail.

“I’ll be careful.” She responds playfully and wraps her new body part tightly around her own waist to show you it can be hidden. “I’m planning on heading to the market before its time to delve. Is there anything that you need?” She returns to playing with her tail.

The market is a complete mess right now, and it’s not as if she has anything to trade with, other than your blood tablets.

“You have something to trade?” You ask suspiciously.

“I’ll figure something out.” She giggles impishly and begins heads back to her room, before turning around suddenly. “Thank you for setting me straight yesterday. I’ll be sure to write all about the work I did with Sayuline, in return.” Her wild grin widens.

You had almost forgotten where that now rotting corpse in your backyard had originated from. Shame you don’t have enough time today to get all the details from her.

“That’s great.” You respond. “But, be sure to be back in time to help set up.”

“I will.” She slinks back into her room, her tail shutting the door behind her.

You’re still not quite sure why Marissa wants to go to the market suddenly, but so long as she keeps doing her duties as an apprentice, you have no problem.

You quickly head downstairs to get some food inside of you.

>>
>>39287978

Ellie and Laurent both greet you in their own way as you enter the kitchen.

Ellie begins to roughly push Laurent out of the room. “Go, go! We have something private to talk about.”

“But-“ Laurent protests but is swiftly herded to the backyard where you can see him eye the creature’s corpse for a moment, before heading over to the garden.

“Let me make you something to eat.” She rushes over to the pantry and pulls starts pulling out various ingredients.

Swell, you were actually wondering if you should ask, but this saves you the trouble.

“So…” You turn to her with a skeptical glance. “Something private you wanted to talk about?”

Ellie looks around the room to see if anyone might be listening before beginning. “I’d like permission to delve by myself today, without Marissa.”

This is surprising, you can’t recall if she ever voiced any complaints in the past about this, but you don’t think she has.

“Any particular rea-“ You begin to ask.

Ellie cuts in. “I’m perfectly fine with her ya know? It’s just that…” She looks up in thought. “I can hardly remember anything when I delve with her. My memories all feel like, hazy and I can't write as well.” She swipes her hand in the air for emphasis. “Plus, I can’t delve with you because I –really- don’t remember anything when I do, and well, you don’t like it when I do…” She finishes her the last part of her sentence with great speed.

She does make a good point about not delving with you, it’s beneficial to neither of you. She’s not new to the whole practice anymore, and she can explore the outer realms more thoroughly for you, so maybe you should let her.

On the other hand, there’s safety in numbers, and part of you wants to keep a watchful eye in some way on both Marissa and Ellie when they delve.

You swallow your mouthful of food. “Alright, I don’t see why not.” You point a cautionary to your young apprentice. “But, watch yourself out there. You’re no use to me dead.”

Your fork clanks against the counter as you’re trapped in a crushing hug.

“A bit much, don’t you think?” You ask, breath being squeezed out of your lungs and you impatiently wait for when you’ll be released.

Ellie shakes her head and insists on continuing.

You try to free yourself, but you desperately lack the physical strength. “Go, go get the delving tubs ready! Now!”

She finally releases you from her death grasp. “Thank you! I’ll make you proud, I know it.”

Ugh, now you feel like puking a little bit. Damn that cheeky little brat.

You rub your tender side. Strange that everyone feels so free to confide their problems in you, a bit annoying actually, but it probably saves you from bigger trouble in the future.

It makes you wonder, besides Matthias, who have you really confided in since…actually never mind about that…

You shovel the rest of your food into your mouth and return to your room to hopefully find something to distract you from unpleasant memories.

You stand leaning against your front gate, dagger in hand and simply breathing in the vivid and colorful sunset.

Odd. You look over the dagger and find that it’s a decent amount less rusty than when you first took it from the old man.

Maybe some of the rust got burnt off from your flame? But that doesn’t explain why the hilt is less rusty as well. It doesn’t matter so long as it does its job when you delve today. Although, you hope that it doesn’t come to that.

The moment the sun hits the horizon, you close your eyes. Perhaps you expect a certain someone to show up right about now, but part of you knows better.

You take another deep breath, and then open your eyes again to see no one.

You shake your head. It’s time to begin.

You head back inside to the delving room and see both Ellie and Marissa rushing in all directions to set up the finishing touches.

Marissa returned not too long ago bearing all sorts of new clothing and accessories. You informed her about the unintended effect that her aura had on Laurent, but her remorseful response felt fabricated at best. Perhaps it was just your imagination.

You clutch the black candle with the dagger in hand as well, and your apprentices take that as the sign to begin.

The crimson fluid stains your pale legs as you lift yourself into the tub.

“Nothing new.” You quietly reassure yourself under your breath before beginning the incantation.

Your heart begins to race in your chest as you picture your destination. Dark, unknown, with only the sound of thousands of violently shouting voices to direct you.

Your hands and legs begin to shake as the you lower yourself, half from excitement, half from fear. Are you really ready?

Is that even a real question? Of course you’re ready, hell it almost feels instinctual, just like returning home. All the knowledge you gained thus far was just so you could make it safely, and you will.

The blood reaches your lips just as you finish the incantation flawlessly. The darkness surrounds you in its tender embrace, and you sink deeper and deeper…

~

The ground is moving, and you’re alive. You tarry for a moment with your face in the ground taking in with all your senses besides sight.
The heartbeat like rhythm of the ground beneath you rattles you to your bones, bones engulfed in the strong stench of sulfur permeating around you. But the most clear and apparent assault on your senses are the sounds.

“MARCH YOU DOGS, MARCH TO SAVE YOUR HOMES FROM THE FIENDS!”

You raise your head as the commanding voice booms to the very core of your being.

Your eyes were not ready for the truth.

A colossal stone palace towers in most of your field of vision, its impossibly ornate face overlooking the infinite throng of demons that march below where you lie. All of the marching to the beat of primal drumming, snarling and yawping as they go. Ever at their backs are the snapping whips of many looming taskmasters. All follow a small contingent of generals at the front of the horde.

Steam rises from the hot magma around you, forcing you back, likely for your own safety.

Your wings flex behind you, massive and elegantly impressive. Their crimson length extends easily several feet further than they ever have before. You stand feet taller, your hands and feet exuding a blue aura of sheer power, and your silvery flowing hair extends to your tailbone.

You feel more whole than you have ever felt in your life.

You turn to see hundreds of buildings behind you, a city in this hellscape, and this palace its crown jewel. The sheer amount of activity overwhelms you, and you don’t even know where to begin.

You’re not going to find out anything just by standing here, so you make a quick mental note on where the portal back home is and then take off to the city.

The current of rising hot air lifts your beating wings higher and higher as you soar effortlessly through the air.

You could get used to this.

You survey the scene below you, the multitude of buildings all nondescript to your eyes so you head toward where the most of the tiny figures below you congregate.

With the throng of raucous yelling behind you, you descend into the heart of the city, landed gracefully on a narrow paved alleyway between buildings, and immediately the wide-ranging cacophony of shouting peddlers greets your ears.

What better place to learn more about where you are than a bazaar?

You peak out of the alleyway cautiously, you’re not at all sure how welcome you’d be here, but beings of all shapes and sizes walk, crawl, or slither through the market all the same.

A being with the upper body of goat passes by and glances at you, before turning his head away as if embarrassed he got seen looking at you.

That’s a start, at you know that you’re not some sort of freak in this place.

Your bare feet tap the open ground of the market in front of you before you actually step out of the alley and observe your surroundings.

You’d swear, other than the multitude of bizarre creatures here, that this the sort of place you could find in your realm.

“You there Miss!” A voice behind you shouts to get your attention.

>>39291597

You turn around in a daze, and see a red skinned and horned man in front of his stall of various cuts of meat.

“Might I interest you in some human stomach meat? Just came in today, so it’s fresh!” He points a pile of intensely wrinkled meat.

Well, there’s one of the differences.

You shake your head politely and scoot away from the stall.

“Hey, pretty young lady!” A grey skinned creature similar to the merchant you met on your first delve, ambushing you wielding a colorful piece of…something. “Try of a sample of this umbral fruit, best you ever had.”

The small piece of food is practically shoved into your mouth before you can say anything.

It’s delicious, a subtle sweetness with a bit of spice. You’ve never had anything of the sort.

You stand there awkwardly chewing the piece, not sure of what to say next.

“Are you alright there, Miss? New to town? I recognize that look. Let me know if I can help you find anything.” The man crosses his arms confidently.

That’s nice of him, but you’re not even sure what to ask and how you should ask it. There are a few things at the front of your mind, but you don't want to ask too many things to risk blowing your cover.

He is a food vendor, you should start with what he knows best.

“Actually…” You rub the back of your head in embarrassment. “I haven’t tried any of the local food yet, what do people eat here?”

The merchant tosses you a skeptical eyebrow. “Wow, you must live far out from the city! You sure you’re not from another plane?” He laughs at his question.

You swallow your saliva and try your best to laugh with him.

“Fruit of the flesh and fruit of the ground! Come on do you think us cityfolk are like those damn grubs or something?!” He laughs harder than earlier.

You don’t even know what a grub is.

“Oh, that’s the same as usual.” You brain goes into frenzy to make connections from all the information you’ve collected thus far. “Was that army out there... headed to fight the ‘grubs’?” You propose a question with ambiguous tone ready to call it a joke if necessary.

“Of course! What else we gonna fight? Humans?!” He takes a long time to recover from that joke. “But I guess it’s more regiments than usual. Something must got the higher ups in a stink.”

Okay, time to end this before you attract any more suspicion.

You shift back and forth on your feet as if looking bored of his talking. “Anything interesting happen around here as of late?”

“Interesting?!” His voice raises quite a bit. “Miss, the trial of the traitor Grievermillion starts today! Hell, just about everyone here is headed over there as soon as the midday rush is over. There hasn’t been anyone like him for generations.”

If everyone is headed over there, he must be one hell of a traitor. Something to see, something to learn about.

“Grivermillion...” You repeat, the name meaning absolutely nothing to you right now. “If I wanted to see it too?” You ask with a bit of sweetness to your voice.

“Just find the procession marching through town, they’ll head over to the courthouse eventually.” He sighs, probably realizing that you’re not going to buy anything.

“Thank you for all the help.” You nod to him politely before taking off into the air once again.

You scan over the network of streets and find the immense procession at the outskirts of town. You land in a side street in front of the procession.

With the amount of people jeering and shouting behind and alongside the thing, you might think it to be some sort of parade. Not to mention the sights you behold in front of you.

Immense walking heads proceed through the streets, draped with stylish silks, bellowing moans quaking from the lips. Groups of very important people ride on top of them. In front of that a squad of chalky white creature beat their own bodies to produce a primal melody for the whole group to march against.

In the very front an imposingly tall multi-legged figure leads dressed in of robe of sickening red.

You expect the whole thing to pass by you as it does to many crowds on its sides. But the red figure turns to you suddenly and stops, stopping the whole march, music included.

“You!” He points a long arm directly at your face. “You don’t belong here.”

Thanks for running Auri!

>>39292680
Well How much more powerful do we feel? Will Ellie be ok on her own? is Laurent suspicious of Marissa? Did Marissa abuse her power and disobey us to get that stuff?
>>
>>39292680
thx 4 runin budi gud thred
>>
>>39292787
Maybe he's a mind reader and heard you talking poorly about his robes?

>>39292831
You're very welcome!
>>39292833

You feel significantly more powerful, but you can be entirely sure how much more until you actually use an ability. We're going to have to see about Ellie. Laurent is very suspicious of Marissa actually. Marissa didn't steal the stuff she received, but paid for it through...less than conventional means.

>>39292851
You're also very welcome!
>>
>>39292897
>...less than conventional means.

Did it involve using her power or her body?
>>
>>39292897
>less than conventional means.
what? why? don't we have plenty of blood/blood credit?
>>
>>39292919
Pretty sure that's only at Ali's and she probably got a lot more than said credit was worth.
>>
>>39292917
Yes. Mostly the latter
>>39292919
It's not so much that she wanted the things, but she wanted to know that she had the power to get them that way.
>>
>>39292960
Ali at this point is in charge of that whole market. But you're right about what she received not being cheap.
>>
>>39292966
Welp, I guess she technically paid for them, so time to forget about it and git gud at delving.
>>
>>39293006
damn Ali works fast.

>>39292966
World's oldest profession?

>>39293013
just hope she doesn't start paying her bills here.
>>
>>39293029
>World's oldest profession?
In a way, but the exact details are going to be left for your imaginations, well unless you ask her. More importantly is that she saw it as more of a conquest.
Is one ever satisfied with the conquests they've already achieved?
>>
>>39293029
>just hope she doesn't start paying her bills here.
I really doubt she's gonna bring people all the way out to our remote hovel just to fuck, especially when it's already crowded with us, ellie, and Laurent.
And ded monster
>>
>>39293096
Alright then. This may be a problem in the future. Ah well when it bites us in the ass I can say told you so to other anons.

>>39293110
Here's hoping.
>>
>>39293110
I hope you guys aren't too attached to that monster, because I have some bad news.
He's dead and he's going to start stinking up the backyard
>>
>>39293174
Hope we can dissect him with our assistants after delve soon then.
>>
>>39293192
Definitely! If everyone makes it back.

I'll be stepping out of the thread now, so until next time!
>>
>>39293174
I'm not
I don't even like necromancy, I wanna drop it and go major delving minor pyromancy.

>>39293134
>This may be a problem in the future
It'll be pretty inane if you say "I told you so" on what we all recognize might be a future problem. The point is that it isn't a problem yet, plus Marissa has had the capability to betray us through brainwashing for a while, and has not. She has no reason to, and to come down on her now for things she does on her own time that don't disturb us would be baseless paranoia, as I said before, and would make any potential problems worse/create entirely new problems.

Mah nigga.
what's the point of necromancy when you need all these requirements?
Delving increases our resource supply and potentially allow us to be powerful in our own relam
pryomancy. You need explination?
Meanwhile necromancy needs a lot of prep. Requirements. First, corpse. Make them out of fallen enemies? Gotta kill them first. Fieled by blood? Just piloting a single monster gave us headaches from blood loss. And I doubt corpses fight well. Horribly inefficient.
