At the moment of his death during a plane crash, a 29 yrs old chemical engineer and fellow fa/t g/uy wondered about how many little details his mind latched on to while trying to keep him alive.

Such as his favorite, lucky d20, flying off his pocket and bouncing around in the mayhem that surrounded him.

Well, he must have rolled a critical success in someone's reincanation tables, because the next thing he knew, he had been reborn in a world of sword and sorcery the likes of which he had always dreamed of.

Now aged 14, our MC is working on a thesis for the Albion Magical University, hoping it will land him the post of head researcher there. For this, he is researching other races magical culture (specifically their curses) and has just landed its flying ship outside a neutral orc town.

Eldric helps Aritsu on the step down from the ship to solid ground, then picks up Mako by the hips and lowers her to the ground next to her, to the great embarrasment of the pretty princesses.

Lyann sighs softly and shakes her head, but doesn't say anything.

The group makes their way down hill towards the road with some difficulty... Mako's geta aren't exactly cliff friendly, so Eldric lets her hold from his arm on the way down.

Aritsu looks at her super comfy and sure footed elven boots, and sighs.

The large town (or a small city?) is composed mostly from low buildings, surrounded by a thick, but not too tall wall.

At the entrance, there are 9 guards sitting, standing, and just generally doing a rather poor job. Then again, most towns would have two or so guards, perhaps they just don't feel too pressed or wary since there's so many of them?

As the group approaches, a older looking orc approaches it.

Our very first actual orc! he's quite tall, and looks strong, but wouldn't look particularly intimidating next to Brass, let alone grandpa. His lower tusks poke just slightly off his mouth, and have metal adornments on them.

It is easy to see why Aritsu said they add metal bits to eachother's faces. The orcs seem to be into facial piercings, while the elves completely frown on humble earrings. Well, the Yellowleaves elves do, anyway. Ellie has already told us HER tribe did not had any special taboo against it.

Well, the orc looks at us and looks downright worried. It is quite understandable given our levels, really.

You can't blame him for it. He fices his simple clothes and tries to remain as official as he can, even tho he knows he could die if we decided to attack him.

He asks about the purpose of our visit and all the normal things you'd expect a gatekeeper to inquire about, then finally lets us in.

The inhabitants look quite healthy, but then again, its hard to tell. Its the first time you meet green people, after all.

The town stinks a little, but its not as if there were open sewers running around. Instead, its the scent of pack beasts, that seem to be omnipresent within the town.

There's no street salesmen, and instead you can see numerous shops in the front of almost every house on the main street. There's no glass on the windows, and instead, they have heavy wood lids.

"Hmm... Eldric" -Lyann says while looking at some piercings on display
"Yes?"
"I was just thinking, does any of us speak orc? Or more importantly, read it?"
"Not me, but I'm willing to learn, why?"
"Well, I don't want to end buying fifteen cooking books by the price of magical grimoires, you know?"
"Ah"

The salesorc asks her if she is interested in some piercings, and recommends her some that are popular with visiting dancers. She humble passes after thinking about it for a while.

...well, some of those sounded like they would hurt quite a bit.

"I'd imagine that having the salesorc do some magic would show him to not be a cook" -suggests Python
"Still... it is something to worry about. We can't really tell the quality of what we are buying" -says Aritsu softly

That ring is pretty useful, eh?

"Oh, Eldric, look!" -says Lyann with a smile- "Wouldn't a kitty bell earring set be perfect for Zoe? she'd be so cute!"
"Those are not EAR rings, miss" -says the salesorc
"Oh, Eldric, look!" -repeats Lyann with a somewhat strained smile- "Wouldn't a kitty bell EARring set be perfect for Zoe? she'd be so cute!"
"They are not..." -the salesorc gives up- "They actually come in threes, you know?"
"That one's for the tail tip, clearly" -says Lyann
"Ah... clearly" -says Eldric while Lyann buys them

"President, in many elven cultures, piercings are akin to engagement rings" -says Aritsu
"It's alright, I don't know if they have any special meaning on lionfolk culture, but on my house's culture, they don't"
"Alright"

"Actually, wouldn't a bell next to your ear be really annoying?" -asks Brass
"Yeah, these two are just for looks. The one for the tiptail is going to keep its function, however" -says Lyann

Your group goes further into the town, asking about a good magic supply store from time to time, and eventually are sent to a two floor stone house on a side street.

It looks quite solid, and its one of the few buildings with more than 1 floors. There is no window display, so you have to go in.

The good inside fill the air with a somewhat chemical stench, but that is probably a testament to the variety and quality of the ingrediants inside.

The shop is somewhat gloomy, but not particularly dark thanks to a few floating glowing orbs by the roof, each shedding soft light on the area around themselves.

"Can I help you?" -asks a young orc girl with rather good manners

Mako lets go of Eldric's arm as the orc girl comes back with the books.

In a small, closed space, with nobody but her friends, she has no reason to be worried, and slowly lets go of her hero's arm.

She still holds his hand, however.

After a few minutes, the girl comes back with several books. They look to be of surprisingly good quality, with thick leather and metal covers, and thick papyrus pages.

These books look quite heavy.

The girl waits for you to examine them before taking them back to get some more.

"Mako, I need my hand for a little bit..."
"Just a little bit?" -she asks softly
"Yes, just a little bit"
"Alright" -she lets go, so Eldric can hold a book with one hand and use the ring with the other

Ah! the ring is translating! that is really useful!

Well, the books are what we asked for, but don't have anything new on the few pages we browsed.

"That wasn't so bad, right?" -Eldric smiles to Mako, and the princess nods softly

Then she grabs his hand again, of course

Eldric buys the books and stores them on his Item Box, then asks the young orc for books on curses.

As they are leaving the store with their purchases, the girl calls out to them at the very last minute.

"Excuse me, customers... would you happen to be adventurers?" -she asks

"Not quite... My friend and I are mercenaries, and these youngsters are students, but if you have a problem, I dont think we'd mind listeing to you" -says Python
"Well... someone has been stealing from the shops lately, in broad daylight. Nothing specific, but both cheap and expensive stuff have gone missing. From apples to expensive grimoires, you know? if you would be interested, could you perhaps go and talk to the master of the weapons shop?"

At the end of the school year in a couple of months. That way the university has time to check all the thesis over the summer and announce the winner when classes start again next year

The group heads over towards the weapons shop, with Brass walking a bit slower than most as he checks the clothes... and then we realize, he's mostly just wearing pants, isn't he? These shops here... everything its his size, but... they're not exactly high fashion.

Well, he's originally a barbarian, so, perhaps its his style.

After deciding to introduce him to our fabulous dwarven tailor, we go into the weapons shop and introduce ourselves.

As for the goods... well, they are... they are not particularly good, but it seems to be the average quality of goods in the place. It is only a border town shop, after all.

The shopkeeper greets us politely in orc before changing to common tongue, and offers to show us his products while doing so.

"No, thank you... well, maybe in a little while" -says Aritsu, somewhat weakly
"We came because we heard you had a thief problem, and were looking to hire somebody to help with it"
"Oh! in that case, you are right. Yes, I lost some knives and a shield. Just the stuff from the top shelf, but not the really good stuff. If you help, I'll give you some good stuff, yes?"
"That's what we came for, sure"

From what the shop keeper explains, only things from the upper shelf have gone missing, and only from the ones closest to the door.

As we go to the next shop, we hear that some stuff has gone missing from the top shelf nearest to the entrance... this story repeats itself across the entire shopping street.

Right now the ratio seems fine.

As for what to do, buy some items and put them on the top shelves of shops as bait.

Do we know of any enchants and spell tricks that can be used to track?
I'm sure that we have a Job or three that could help with this, such as Ranger. But I don't have the PDF with me.

Your group prepares some bait with some cheap goods and gets ready to track them if or when they get stolen.

While we are waiting and sitting on the town's plaza, Mako takes the chance to borrow one of our brand new books, and tries reading it....

"I can't read the characters, but they are much prettier than I expected them to be" -says Mako- "Can you read it?"
"Sure, give me a moment... Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky. Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone, Nine for Mortal Men..." -Eldric starts in as serious a tone as he can
"Really1?" -the petite princess looks at him with admiration
"I'm sorry, I was joking. I do not read orc... wait a little, please" -he takes out his ring of power and reads some to the princess

While the group is having fun, one of the alarm spells is triggered, and they begin moving after it.

"Who do you think is the thief?" -says Aritsu
"Maybe we should wonder about what?" comments Lyann

As they follow Eldric's tracking spell, he leads them outside the city, into the nearby fields.

"It would be so boring if it was a thieving magpie..." -Brass comments while following the youngsters
"I doubt a bird could take a shield"
"Oh, right"

Finally, the group arrives at a cliff invisible from the floor, and as Brass climbs ahead, he confirms to quite a bit of items, some valuable, and most not, in varying size and weight.

"I can't see the thief, however" -he says-

>Throw us down a rope and we'll climb up to you

After helping everyone up, we look around to see that, indeed, all manners of things lie around in no particular order. While many things are made of metal, there are just as many works of wood, cloth or leather, and even a few bones from small animals such a rabbits and birds.

"Well, if it is a dragon, it has no sense of worth" -says Atroma from the circlet on Eldric's forehead.

It had been a while since our pet dragon had said something for the last time,

"It does not seem to be a faery's fault, nor a bird either." -says Aritsu

"Shh be quiet." -says Brass softly

Eventually a winged child shows up, and then another. They seem like young children, but for the wings on their back.

They are naked and their hair is dirty. Chirping to eachother, they rub their faces together and cuddle under eachother's wings as they place down the little trinkets they've picken up from not just the town, but the surrounding region.

"Harpies" -says Aritsu through our 'party chat'- "What should we do?"
"Are they dangerous?"
"Well, it depends. These are just chicks. They can be raised and trained as messengers or guards, and the nomads in some tribes use them as birds of prey."

Without any concept of ownership society as we know it would be utterly unable to form. Work would, ultimately, go unrewarded as all the lazy douchebags'd just take all the stuff the idiot who decided to work hard created. Thus, no work ever really gets done beyond base subsistence (i.e. caveman times) until one of em' goes crazy and comes up with the concept somehow. I'm a firm believer in the fact that humanity has advanced one benevolent madman at a time.

That's why people hate em', it's a utopian fantasy at best, and encouraging, even celebrating, the most craven amorality at worst.

However, harpies are literal bird brains. They just might not know any better. We can teach them the truth of the world if they don't know it already.

>However, harpies are literal bird brains. They just might not know any better. We can teach them the truth of the world if they don't know it already.

Thats what I was thinking, but the kender specter looms much taller than any kender ever did. It makes sense, I think, for creatures that should have been able to, as intelligent humanoids, to create their own culture, to have failed to become civilized if they don't have a ownership concept.

Which is another way of saying how the fuck did the kender ever get past where the harpies are at right now, socially?

They wouldn't, not unless they have a kind of "hive mind" going. But at that point, it's really just one person (the queen/king/whatever) owning everything even the lives of everyone else in society. Indeed it's like a single individual became a society, all their orders followed to the letter without exception or complaint. All property within the domain is, for all intents and purposes, "theirs" and thus a kind of societal advancement becomes possible.

Still out-competed by the many individuals with a property concept. More minds=more chance to come up with a workable solution to a problem. It has drawbacks, but that fact will entail a more rapid advancement... for so long as the property rights are actually enforced that is. Instant that stops happening BOOM! Dark Ages baby. Cyclical history is a bitch.

If you wanted to make it funny, you could give them platypus tails to show the ancestry.

But whatever floats your boat.

As for males, maybe you could pattern harpies closer to wyndians from breath of fire? Bird-like bone structure and wings, but mostly human limbs and/or organs.

Or it could be a semi-amazon thing, where males are rare and considered either leaders or valuable resources, which is kinda magical realm but also done so much that it doesn't bother people a lot.
