You are Alice Zief, Ars Magus Technician, and you just had a magical mexican stand-off with a drunken cat-girl physics professor in her underwear be interrupted by your adopted daughter who thought you were going to engage in carnal relations with the woman.

You're not quite sure how your life ended up this way.

Or why Tsubaki's first thought upon walking into the room was that you and the professor were going to make out. OK, maybe based on appearances that makes sense, but where did your innocent little Tsubaki learn about things like that?!

You push the question aside for another time. You have more pressing things to worry about right now.

In the opposite corner of the spare bedroom, Professor Kokonoe is slugging down a glass of water. Loud gulps seem to fill up the quiet room, until she finishes the entire thing with a gasp. This followed up by an awkward glare, which somehow has lost a lot of it's ability to seem threatening to you. You suppose that a lot of tension has sort of just been tossed out the window.

"So... I take it you found something?" Might as well start with the obvious. The professor's look sours,

"Your genetic profile is a mish-mash of my mother's, in an obviously artificial pattern. Couple of bits are specifically engineered to be more conducive to armagus compatibility and higher overall physical fitness." She spits out in a flat machine-gun spray of words. "But you're still an almost perfect clone of my mom. Which, for obvious reasons, I find suspicious as hell."

So.

You're a clone. Of Kokonoe's mother.

You have no idea who that is. You should probably be floored. Amazed, even. Stupefied that you're a copy of someone you've never even met.

Except that it's way too late at night for this kind of bullshit and the most you can manage is a sort of non-plussed look.

"As suspicious as you may find it, professor, I know as little about it as you do and wouldn't have asked for your help if I did." She raises a single accusatory finger, mouth opened in a silent snarl... The lowers it again as her expression changes to something almost apologetic.

"That's right, isn't it." She states, rather than asks. "Amnesia, and crawling out of wreckage..." Her expression seems to darken, but by now you can identify this as her 'considering' look as opposed to her 'I am going to deal with you aggressively look'. Which you suppose is good, considering that her spell looked rather... destructive.

It's only because you're paying attention that you notice the look of realization on her face for a split-second before she schools herself back into that expression.

And suddenly, she casually stretches as though nothing had ever happened. You can't help but notice that it does some interesting things to her chest, but is now really the time to think about that?

"Ugh, you know what? It's late. I think I'm going to just get some shut-eye."

Is she... deflecting all this?

>Let it go and go get some shut-eye.
>Oh, no. You're not letting go of this.

You just sort of sigh.

This isn't really what you want to deal with right now, but...

"Alright." If she wants to deflect, then let her deflect. Wresting an answer out of her will probably take a lot more effort than you want to deal with right now. "Since you're here, why not join me and Tsubaki? We can talk about the rest in the morning."

For an instant, Kokonoe freezes. Her head jerkily turns to face you.

"You're... suggesting I get into bed. With you." You raise an eyebrow, indicating that, yes, you know what that sounded like.

"I wouldn't want you to have any regrets in the morning about leaving without telling anyone, now would I?" You say it so happily. Without any form of threat whatsoever. Just a warm, honest smile.

And if she was wearing pants, you'd have just scared them off of Kokonoe.

For the sake of convenience, you decide to make the decision for her. By forcibly picking her up and hauling her over your shoulder back to your room.

... Where Tsubaki seems to have had an ear to the wall?

When you walk in, it takes her a second to realize what just happened. And if she was blushing before, now her entire face is as red as a tomato.

Just what goes through that girl's head? Still, tucking her into bed helps calm her down.

Kokonoe just sort of quietly glares, but puts up with your insisting that she sleep in the same bed more gracefully then she has a lot of other things this evening. A few minutes later, and you're nearly asleep yourself, quietly wondering what tomorrow will bring.

The implication isn't necessarily lewd. But dragging another women into your bed is very strange sounding.

And no, that's not how the observation mechanic works. If you wanted to abuse it, here's what you'd want to do.

Observation: What is Kokonoe's underwear like?

I'd describe the bra as oddly lacy looking lingerie, while she has an oddly low-riding black thong where the sides seem to rise very high on her waist.

This would give you an Intervention Point, which you could use to make the underwear uncomfortably sweaty, prompting Kokonoe to take them off before bed.

... And wow, I feel oddly dirty for typing all that.

You are Tsubaki Zief and, for reasons not entirely made clear to you, you're sharing a bed with your Mother's... Not quite lover?

You'd caught something while listening through the wall about your mother being like her mother, and the beastkin lady being upset about it for some reason? She seemed really surly despite being so small and cute.

Maybe she feels like she's not being taken seriously in her love? She wants to be seen as more than just a child and was going to force your mother to acknowledge her as an adult before you walked in and-

You curl into a tighter little ball under your section of the covers, blushing so hard it almost hurts. Too much like those comics you found with the Kaka. Way too much.

It's then that you notice a very, very subtle glow about the room. If you hadn't been sleeping here with your mother a lot, you probably wouldn't have noticed it at all.

Without moving a muscle, you slowly follow the light to it's source. The Cat-lady's eyes glowed gold in the dark, as she leaned closer and closer to your mother's chest.

Could this be-?!

Biting the inside of your mouth is the only reason you don't squeal.

She seizes a breast in both hands, gently rolling them apart and you feel something wet trickle under your nose, but you don't so much as make a sound. And then-

She leans closer, and closer and closer... And places one of her ears to your mother's chest in the space she made. Is she... listening to your mother's heartbeat?

You just stare at that for awhile.

The Beast-kin's ear twitches a few more times, but she mostly just holds her position and listens. When she pulls away, she has such a serious look on her face. Is she upset that she can't listen your mother's heartbeat more often? That she doesn't get to be held as closely as you do?

Afterward, the cat-girl goes to sleep, carefully putting a small distance between her back and your mother's.

... Is this what they call 'Tsundere' in those comics?

You are Kokonoe A. Mercury, and you're lying in bed with a scarily advanced artificial life-form that is based on your mom and the girl she adopted from the Yayoi.

On the overall, you'd call this a shitty day.

It was creepy enough when Zief just LOOKED like your mom, but finding out that she was an artificial life-form just spiked the charts you used to determine 'normality'. The motherly smile of death she gave you being incredibly familiar didn't exactly help.

Forget shivers running down your spine, the entire thing vibrated in place.

Still, you have to admit it makes you a little nostalgic.

How long has it been since someone cared for you genuinely, expecting nothing in turn? Yeah, she was basically just exercising basic human decency, but in your experience decency is getting rarer and rare in humans. When you'd heard about the Yayoi incident, you'd thought maybe you'd found an ulterior motive. A valuable hostage, or a political bargaining chip. But your spying didn't reveal anything.

Just a girl being looked after by her guardian.

By her mother.

Not for the first time, you quash something akin to envy.

You don't have time for such things.

...

When morning comes, it brings something else you don't have time for.

A hangover.

Thankfully the sun doesn't reach the bottom of the city, so the house stays a pleasantly dim brightness. Pulling your underwear back on feels a little disgusting, but you pulled most of your spare clothes from this house decades ago. But there's still some basic kaka jackets stashed in a closet.

Your head is pounding too hard to conjure something, so you end up going with those, even if they've gotten a little short on you. They cover your front, at least.

There. You're clothed and functioning enough to establish your priorities.

It is instinct that currently drives your brain, and that instinct currently has locked onto a certain scent that demands your immediate attention.

Coffee.

You require it.

Someone is brewing some downstairs.

It's almost stupidly simple.

Eye screwed shut, you guide yourself through the house with one hand on the wall. Down the appropriate number of steps. Into the kitchen where the smell is strongest. Your thrust out a clawed hand.

Someone chuckles and says something about not being a morning person, but you decide not to claw their eyes out since they also give you some sweet, dark nectar.

Nearly hot enough to scald, and filled with an absurdly sweet richness, you can't help but purr as perception starts to filter back in.

That woman is standing next to the stove, stupidly smug grin on her face as she turns back to frying up some sausage. It's... Apparently eleven in the morning?

Early for you then. Normally you're not up until at least one or two in the afternoon.

You find your musings interrupted rather quickly though. Interrupted isn't quite the right word, though.

The Yayoi is staring at you. And your ass.

You don't actually have pants on, but she's a girl. Should she really be staring at you that hard? She looks so happy too, it's a little sickening. Eyes sparkling, a wide smile, a tiny blush...

What the hell?

You take another sip of your coffee, enjoying the liquid bliss that Alice seems so very good at making, as you consider how you fell about this.

An entirely possible prospective.

It won't be easy (not least because you look like her Mom) and it'll involve a lot of hard work. But would it really be /tg/ without waifu wars? I must introduce another waifu soon, to balance the scales...

It's gonna be difficult for the new girl to compete against one of the Top Three Blazblue Waifus, tho.

Kokonoe a best, followed by Noel, tied with Nu, who are both above Bullet and Makoto. Rachel loses most of her points because Loli, and Litchi is in last place.

You smirk a little, draining the mug.

Most see the Beastkin heritage, the reputation, or your brain and think something worse of you for it or become guarded around you. Being thought of as appealing, even if the girl doesn't realize it, is something that soothes your ego a bit.

Almost enough to make you forget the incident from last night and the entirely inappropriate assumptions she made.

You grab her hood and pull it down over her eyes.

"Huh?"

Petty revenge is generally just that. Petty. But you can't say you don't enjoy the little things in life, some times.

"Cute kid." I compliment Alice, taking a seat at the table. "I heard you've been teaching her a little."

"One day, I will find out how words gets around about these things. But yes, I've been teaching her." You can appreciate the sentiment. The Yayoi are not exactly a bunch you want to tangle with lightly. You make a note to do some creative editing of reports when you get back. The Yayoi are currently engaged in negotiating with the terrorist group who kidnapped the girl over her safe return. The terrorist group, or rather black-ops Librarian Intelligence task force, are very confused but are rolling with it for now.

Of course, the whole house of cards could crumbling down if anyone realizes the little brat is down here.

Still, business later.

Verifying the intelligence of the former Yayoi heir now.

"Say Tsubaki, how much thaumic output should you expect from a class 2 automated converter running off of the environment at two hundred meters aboves sea level?" The answer is pretty simple, to be honest. It's just most people would need to look at a chart, or use a calculator.

Simple elevation to dictate the seithr concentration, an automated converter to stabilize the effect without worry about compatibility, and even asking about thaums as opposed to electrical output keep the whole thing pretty simple.

It's just a matter of knowing the pieces of the equation, really.

The girl's face twists, biting her lip in concentration. For a second I think I might have over-estimated her, but...

"Mother? What's the concentration at that level?" You don't react to a certain word in that sentence, despite figuring to hear it at least once or twice more this morning. Alice predictably knows the exact concentration and rattles off the approximate PPM. The girl plucks a small device off the table that turns out to be a surprisingly well put-together looking armagus. You're going to have to give Alice some credit. It looks pretty basic, but the design looks surprisingly rugged and adaptable.

A minutes tinkering with the armagus' internal calculator, and she has your answer.

Smart.

You like smart kids. You pat her on the head, wondering if that weird warmth in your chest is anything like pride in your children is supposed to feel like.

For a very, very brief instant you wonder if your old man ever felt this way about you.

Then you bottle the thought and toss it deep inside of you never to see the light of day again.

Shortly after, breakfast is served and you are handily distracted by Alice's amazing cooking. It's a little ridiculous, frankly. A great cook, a good mother figure, and can brew coffee /just/ the way you like it.

She loses her memories (if she had many to start with, you're starting to put together some theories on that), and this is what she keeps? It's a slightly guilty thought, but you can't help but be thankful that they were what ended up sticking around. You love your sweets, and are addicted to your suckers, but there's something to be said about a regular meal too.

It hardly takes any time at all for the food to vanish from the plates, and, again, you can't help but feel tiny spikes of jealousy whenever the two giggle together or chat about the goings on of their lives, or anything really. It's cute, honest. Totally adorable.

It's something you've never really had and probably never will.

Before you now it, you're about to walk out the front door, leaving it all behind. Alice is there to say goodbye, and Tsubaki is too.

You search yourself for something... appropriate to say at a time like this.

You rub at the back of your neck, a habit you're not quite sure where you picked up.

"Thanks." Somehow, the word feels rusty coming out of your mouth. It's a routine phrase, but how often have you said it meant it? Not just a casual 'thank you' for funding or equipment or a favor, but for someone genuinely deciding to help you with something? "I know I showed up drunk and unannounced." And threatened her, and ate her food, and performed an examination without her knowledge... You know what? You'll just stop while you're ahead.

And the woman just waves it off.

"Don't worry about it. We'll just discuss what you were doing with your hands another time." And shit, she was awake? You're actually a little embarrassed that you were caught examining her like that now.

... Why is the Yayoi brat- you amend that to Zief brat- blushing all of a sudden? Screw it, problem for another time.

"I guess... I'll be back." You turn and step out the door.

You take three steps.

You immediately rush back inside and slam the door behind you.

"Uh..." Well, this is a bit of a problem. "Could I borrow some- oh, thank you." Alice is already holding out a pair of sweatpants, oddly satisfied looking smirk on her face. You just pull them back as quickly as possible without having to resort to eye contact before trudging back out the door.

It takes a few seconds to finish the teleport, and then you're gone.

A brief burst of azure star-light, pinpricks white-blue against an endless abyss, and you're back in the lab.

Which is now on fire.

There's a good solid half-inch of green goo all over the floor, you can hear the fresh screams of interns being subjected to tentacles and other horrors from beyond, and you can faintly smell scorched butterscotch on the wind.

Strange, you didn't think orientation day was for another week.

Oh well, if you hurry you can probably pick yourself up one of the surviving interns. Maybe they'll be able to brew some decent coffee, too.

Not something for the fight itself, but for when you're staring each other down, the winds of fate dictating a battle between what some would call twin falsehoods.

Glad you liked it. Mad Science it pretty much literally what Sector Seven exists to do. Remembering that opens up a whole world of humor.

Next thread? Next week, thursday night, 10PM Pacific. Same as always.

How often does Sector Seven need to clean the charred, electrified remains of some poor sucker who just snapped and leaned back a little too much when laughing maniacally on a rail-less walkway over an enormous high-energy experiment?

i know but it feels to calm to subdued for something that is to announce a great clash.

Surprisingly? Not that often.

At that level of Mad Science, most tend to just end up piles of ash. You occasionally have cyborgs or people who got genetic enhancements though, and they manage to last a little longer.

It's all about the tension, friend. This isn't the actual battle music, this is what would play during an encounter. A faint spark in the air, the solemn tones of the electric guitar giving the occurrence a reverent air some would call mystical.

... Although, Naoe Family is very good too. For the battle itself, that could work.

well i guess the problem lies with me then because it does nothing of the sort to me.

I get another day that I don't automatically lose to Dark Souls, Guided Fate Paradox (fucking Chapter 6 is a major pain in the ass, which is a shame, because it's where the plot picks up and starts getting really cool), or something else and we'll see.

Has Alice to date ever actually been able to fully unleash (well, maybe not FULLY, but at least not trivially defeat) on an enemy besides what's his name the cat thing?

You've never been able to fully unleash on someone, no.

You'll start to get an inkling of just how powerful she is once the arc gets started, though.

Is it bad that I consider this pretty ideal for Tsubaki's fights in the future?
