You are Kusajishi Riku, and you weren't planning on becoming the Lieutenant of Second Division this morning when you woke up. But that's kind of what just happened. You even have the badge and everything... it's a little surreal.

"Your spiritual pressure got stronger again," your Captain observes. "I'm not sure you were gonna lose that one. In fact, the speed you're improving at is almost alarming."

You frown, not fully sure of the implications there. “Alarming? How?”

Yoruichi bites her lip as she considers an explanation. “Seems you have an explosive growth pattern,” she tells you. “You get much stronger all at once, but you need to be careful to pace yourself or you'll end up getting too strong too fast. Kisuke nearly ran into that problem.”

“Really?” you ask, a little surprised. “How so?”

“Eh? Who knows, maybe you should ask him?” she teases. “Can't have me explaining everything.”

“Well, I think it's time to celebrate again,” you declare. “Just... maybe not as much as last time.”

“Oh? You don't like waking up with new tattoos?”

>Speaking of celebrating, maybe Kisuke should be there. He's a Commander too, right?
>I've got a couple of friends in the Academy who could use a drink.
>Other suggestions?

“Not really,” you shrug. “The lap pillow was comfy though.”

“Ah, I see,” your Captain replies playfully, lifting her leg up at her side and pivoting to show off the skin of her thighs visible in the cut in her hakama. “You have good taste, Lieutenant. My legs truly are splendid, aren't they... it's okay to stare a little.”

“I refuse!”

“Fine, fine. Your loss.”

“Maybe Kisuke should be there,” you quickly change the subject as Yoruichi's leg returns to the floor. “He's a Commander too, so he should be the first to know... and I know a few Academy students who could probably use a drink or two.”

“You mean Shiba and Nikko? From the inquiry?” she asks. “Fine. Bring 'em along. I'll be bringing Kūkaku, though.”

You nod. “Sure. May be nice for Kaoru to have someone there she knows.”

“I'll send out a few hell butterflies to get word out,” Yoruichi offers. “You know where you wanna go? Your promotion, your call.”

“I've always wanted to try one of those big, multi-course kaiseki sets,” you admit, “but I've never had the money to pay for one. That's changed now. Know any good places?”

After a moment where your Captain almost looks a little guilty, she nods. “Close to the Senzaikyu, in the fanciest parts of the Seireitei. There's one that's pretty popular with officers and nobles.”

You can't help but grin. “Sounds like the kinda place they'd never let me into without the badge?”

“Definitely.”

“Perfect.”

It doesn't take more than a few minutes to change into a fresh uniform, which isn't covered in sweat and mud, and follow Yoruichi to the restaurant. Sure enough, it's pretty freaking fancy: a meal here probably costs at least as much as it used to take to feed yourself for a month. Definitely a place for special occasions only, unless you just have more money than you could ever hope to spend.

So like Yoruichi. Or her family. Or the Shibas. Or the Kuchikis. Or the Omaedas.

Kai and Kaoru aren't much later, showing up in what look like their own personal clothes rather than their student uniforms. Kai stares at the restaurant in awe.

“We're eatin' in there?” he asks, his stare turning towards you as you shrug.

“Yup. We're alive, I got promoted, and we deserve a good meal.”

Kaoru nods her head in agreement as you speak. “It's just as she said. Beating a bunch of big Hollows, surviving a Captains' meeting, and... wait, why is Riku wearing a badge on her hip?”

You smile. “Sudden opening in the Stealth Corps, you see. I'm moving up in the world.”

“You got PROMOTED!?” she gasps. “I mean, you're an actual Lieutenant? Now? After how many years?”

Yoruichi shrugs. “Eight, I think?”

“After EIGHT years!” Kaoru continues. “I... that... you... but I... huh...”

“You okay there, sis?” Kai asks.

“No, nothing. Just remembering a time before I was surrounded by monsters all the time. That's all.”

If Kukaku was who it's theorized she was, then I'd say the monsters have always been there, she's only just seeing them now.
>>
>>39249513
>the monsters have always been there
We're still in the timeline where one Captain is about to get promoted into Royal Guard status, right? The fat lady one?
>>
>>39249435
Kūkaku arrives next, greeting her cousin with a boisterous one-armed hug. Strangely, she hasn't seemed to change her attire at all. Guess that comes with her family's position: past a certain point, you figure they don't have to care anymore.

Last to arrive is Urahara, in his work uniform like you and your Captain.

“You're late again, Kisuke,” Yoruichi smirks. “Your Bankai had better give you super-punctuality too, or you'll never make it as a Captain.”

"Sorry, Executive," Kisuke bows his head with a grin. "But I've been working on such tricky things, you know? It's hard to drop... hang on..."

Urahara peers at your waist from behind his mop of blonde hair. "You mean Miss Kusajishi's our new Lieutenant?"

Yoruichi nods. "Like I keep saying, you're always late. And now she outranks you."

"My my," Kisuke mutters, though his tone is more of genuine surprise than frustration. "Guess I'll have to use that after all."

Inside the restaurant your party is immediately seated at a long, low table. The little room you've been given is somewhat secluded and private, which makes it much easier to talk amongst yourselves and enjoy the food: which is spectacular. After a round of three drinks comes two rounds of food in small portions, but with either five or seven carefully arranged dishes in each round. Soup and rice are served alongside, meaning even Yoruichi seems satisfied with the amount and quality of food.

Clues seem to point to that, but until Word of Kubo comes around, it'll be well thought out speculation at best.

And to bring this topic back to the quest, I guess Kukaku will suggest blowing up spirit fireworks as a pastime.

As afternoon shifts into evening, people around the table begin to loosen up a little. Sitting at a table with a Captain, a newly-minted Lieutenant, and a Commander in the Onmitsukidō probably isn't a comfortable experience for Kai and Kaoru, so as Kūkaku and Kisuke discuss the proper chemical composition of fireworks compared to smokeless musket powder, you turn to ask your two new friends about what they plan to do after their upcoming graduation.

“I'm headed for Eleventh,” Kai declares proudly. “They've got a lotta good fighters to learn from over there even if their Captain's got... well, you know.”

Recalling the fight yesterday, it seemed like his physical style really would suit a fighting-oriented Division. “Good luck with that,” you tell him. “Too used to sneaking around for a stand-up fight myself.”

Kai laughs loudly. “Yeah, well, fightin' smart's never bad. Jus' hope summa the guys over in my new Division agree.”

You nod quietly as Kūkaku loudly explains why it absolutely wasn't her fault that she accidentally turned one of Yoruichi's wooden flutes into a bomb one time when they were drinking together. Apparently Kūkaku had always insisted that Kisuke came up with the idea, which meant he'd always gotten the blame. You certainly don't doubt those three have some stories to tell, but right now you're more interested in the younger of the two Shibas.

Kaoru frowns, apparently uncertain of what she wants to do as a Shinigami. “I was thinking Fourth Division,” she admits, and you instinctively sit up a bit straighter, “since Captain Unohana insists their Relief Teams need more strong fighters to protect themselves.”
(1/2)
>>
>>39250071
Oh. Yeah, that makes sense. You're absolutely NOT going to tell Kaoru that you're actually the reason Unohana's trying to build up her teams like that, but at least you can nod knowingly and pretend it's just something that makes sense to you rather than a personal issue.

“On the other hand, the Kidō Corps has always been under-staffed... they use a lot of weird barriers, so not everyone can just pick them up easily.”

You offer a grin. “And you've got natural talent for kidō, seeing as you used a 70's level spell yesterday.”

Kisuke's words earlier are starting to make you wonder, but Kaoru could use some advice, it seems. Not everyone just has their careers fall into place, after all. It's a big decision.

Joining the 4th also entails doing the most mundane duties, so if she keeps that in mind and still go for it, at least she won't be blindsided by preconceived expectations.

Don't know enough about the Kidou Corps 'cept they make barriers and their spells probably reach up to #99, so opinions on that would be of very little help.
>>
>>39250109
“Well,” you offer, “think about it this way: a hundred years from now, which would you regret not joining more?”

Kaoru seems flummoxed by the notion. “Huh. That's actually not a bad point. I guess I'll have to think about that, thanks.”

“Sure thing,” you shrug, taking a bite of rice and washing it down with sake. “Just lemme know how it goes.”

The young Shiba nods. “Yeah... I will, Lieutenant!”

“Huh,” you mutter quietly. “I guess that's what having friends feels like.”

Yoruichi pauses briefly mid-bite before continuing as she had been. Over Kai and Kūkaku, you're not sure anyone else heard that. Probably for the best. After all, those days living alone in an alley under a pile of wood scraps should have been long gone. That's the point of this celebration, right?

“So, Commander,” you press Urahara, trying to ignore that unbidden train of thought as best you can. “You mentioned something earlier, about “having to use that”?”

“Hm?” he asks, as if trying to remember something. “Oh, so I did say somethin' like that. I was talkin' about forcing my Benihime to teach me Bankai.”

>>
>>39250517
“That really a good idea? Antagonizing... well, yourself?”

Kisuke nods thoughtfully. “A Zanpakuto's a part of you, sure, But it's not necessarily a helpful or cooperative part. Bankai requires one to force their Zanpakuto to teach it. It's complicated, like any other relationship.”

“All I've done is find a way to skip a step that usually takes ten years, you see,” he concludes. “Really, who can spare the time?”

You shrug. “I dunno, Tenkotsuki seems obsessed with propriety. I doubt she'd let me cheat.”

Kisuke chuckles to himself, probably thinking about his own Zanpakuto's eccentricities. “Every Zanpakuto's a little crazy, I figure.”

The rest of the evening seems to be going well, until Kūkaku seems to notice someone coming into the restaurant.

“Kirio!” she calls out, immediately getting out of her seat to join what looks like a massively-endowed Captain who you don't immediately recognize.

“Interesting,” Kisuke mutters. “Wonder what Captain Hikifune's doing here?”

"Should I know who that is?" you ask. "She's a Captain, right?"

"Twelve," Yoruichi tells you. "Really clever with kidō, and she makes interesting spiritual tools. Her Lieutenant is a loud pain in the ass named Hiyori."

Kisuke frowns at the scene over your shoulder, where several people in extremely fancy clothing have joined Kūkaku and the Captain. "She's with some interesting people... best not to interrupt, maybe?"

Yoruichi nods in agreement. "Yeah. Think maybe this is a good time to pay the tab and step out, Kisuke."

You ask why this is such a big deal, but neither of your senior companions seem inclined to discuss it.

"So maybe we should make this a thing," you comment outside the now-vacated restaurant. "Though, maybe have it be a cheaper place."

Yoruichi grins. "Sure. Beats the hell out of Captain's meetings, at least."

Kai and Kaoru seem similarly excited about the prospect before heading back for their student barracks. You suppose you really have made friends these last two days, for probably the second time in your whole afterlife... and you have to wonder how and when your lives will cross again.

Finally, it comes time to head back towards the Second Division barracks. The full moon hangs bright in the sky as you follow the alleys and roads, before climbing the steps in front of HQ. Kisuke excuses himself, and you yourself part ways with your Captain for now.

>Go to sleep.
>The moon is pretty tonight, go out and meditate for a while with Tenkotsuki.
>Go out and work through sword techniques to unwind?

Seems like the Soul Society economy is pretty basic. Not much use for cash, other then food and a few luxeries.

You're not tired yet, not even close. And with all that's happened today, you feel like touching base with Tenkotsuki before you rest.

Leaving the building through a window, you find a nice position on the roof where you can see the stars and moon, and the little wooded area that comprises the Second Division's grounds. Amidst that beautiful, moonlight backdrop, you sit quietly with your sword in your lap, and focus your mind and spirit inwards.

The surroundings here are familiar: the lava field, the stormy ocean below, the hissing azure flames, and the luminous tree. Tenkotsuki is waiting there, as she always is, beneath the tree.

“Congratulations on defeating that Lieutenant, though so long as you could hear my voice the issue was never truly in doubt,” she tells you in her typically aristocratic manner, waving you closer. “I take it things are going to plan with your life?'

You shrug, then take a seat. “Who said I had a plan?”

Tenkotsuki laughs behind that little paper fan of hers. “Indeed, it would almost seem as if you are simply enjoying the journey too much to fret and worry about the destination. Which is well and good, I think.”

“So how did you find my first two abilities?”

>Great, they really work well together.
>How many “abilities” can you teach me?
>What is our Bankai like?
>You were wondering about my plans? Well, what do YOU want?
>Other?

On a tangential note, Seki seems like a really damn handy Bakudo to infuse in her sheath.

Since things are definitely winding down all around, I'll be wrapping up soon. Got one thing to get to before that can happen.

It'd be a great asset for the Detention Corps, if ever Kisuke needs an extra temp warden.

It's like having a shock baton powered by soul magic. And instant cuffing too!
>>
>>39251812
Wardens aren't allowed to have their zanpakuto while on duty. It's why Urahara is frightfully strong at hand-to-hand combat.
>>
>>39251762
This is the second thread. So.. we had a full one.

...not even just a sheath? Ah, well shame then.

You think back to how well the two techniques Tenkotsuki's helped you learn worked in combat today. It's still amazing to you that such a combination of techniques is even possible, let alone viable.

“They both suit each other and my style so well,” you reply. “You're really something else, you know that?”

Tenkotsuki smiles, leaning back against the trunk of the tree. “I know that of course... but I thank you for the compliment.”

“How many of those techniques do you have to teach me?” you continue.

Tenkotsuki rolls away from you onto her thigh, showing off her many vulpine tails. “As many as this,” she says. “The first eight are Shikai, and may be used one at a time. The ninth will serve as your Bankai... if you earn the right and have the need to learn it, that is.”

You shake your head, not quite understanding why Bankai is such a big sticking point for your Zanpakuto. “It's a part of us,” you point out. “Why would you deny it?”

“Because my Bankai is humiliating,” she mutters darkly. “Using it would feel like an act of desperation, or even an admission of defeat. I hate it.”

After all this, only one possible question remains: “So you keep asking me this, but what do YOU want, Tenkotsuki?"

Your sword's spirit looks at you in apparent confusion. “I told you once already, fool. There are only two things in this world that I cannot abide... and those words will always hold true."

It's got slutty lingerie doesn't it? Or one of those sweaters from Japan.

Or it's physical damage/brute force instead of magical buff like she prefers.

When you open your eyes it's still dark. The moon has drifted a little in the sky, but it's still the dead of night. You'd guess it was only an hour or so. The main difference now is that you're not alone.

"We really need to find you a hobby," Yoruichi muses as she sits next to you, looking up at the moon.

You shrug. "I could say the same, Captain."

"It's understandable we'd spend a lot of time together," she offers, turning to lay her head atop your right thigh. "We go way back, as it turns out, and now you're my Lieutenant. How the hell do ya figure that?"

"No clue," you admit. "Just worked out that way sometimes, I guess."

Yoruichi yawns a little, shutting her eyes. "Well, I've gotta admit. I'm... at this time of night? Really?"

Your Captain's eyes open again as a solid black butterfly floats towards her fingertip. She pauses, listening to the message meant for her ears, before sighing.

"Well shit. That's a new one."

You can't help but be a little nervous at your friend's tone. "What happened now?"

"You remember that guy from Third Division? Went rogue? You probably heard about him at the inquiry?"

You nod, recalling that yes, that person was mentioned. Not who they were or what exactly they did, but that they existed and were considered a problem.

"Well, our intel suggests he might've fled the Soul Society altogether through a gate."

You frown. "What, into the living world?"

Yoruichi looks up at you, a strange mix of concern and disbelief in her eyes. "Guess again."

Really, all Shikai and Bankai are supposed to be related. That's just part of the setting. The connection between Tenkotsuki's abilities is a bit more complicated than most.

One spoiler before I finally go to bed: after this little event, which could very well turn out to be very important in the long run, there will be a timeskip to 1863 before Kisuke is made a Captain. It'll be at that point that Little Bee will enter the fray in earnest.

Also right now she hates you.

>>39252386

Ho-hum, shirley some remaining Quincies aren't gonna turn up here, no sirree!
>>
>>39252459
The answer is probably yes. Not only are her brothers dead while Riku survived, but Riku's now the second-highest ranked member of the stealth corps and apparently Yoruichi's actual friend.

After less than a decade, what's more.
>>
>>39252459
Both.
>>
>>39252386
Well, yeah. Of course Little Bee is gonna hate us.

We came out of fucking nowhere, we're really close to her beloved Yoruichi, we were on the mission that two of her siblings died on. And to make her feel even worse, we're likely stronger than she is at this point.

The funny thing is that they have an awful lot in common.
>>
>>39252352
Oh no, I've already given up and accepted my fate. Now I'm just hoping it won't be constantly pushed into focus though I already think it will.
>>
>>39253430
I'll say this much for the archive, at this point not talking about Yoruichi would be like doing a documentary on Bonnie and Clyde, but never talking about Clyde. But even if there ends up being a romance, it'll basically look like how she treats canon Urahara most of the time.

No romantic developments will lead to "smut", or doing "dates", or otherwise calling an undue amount of attention to it beyond how it may slightly change the dynamic of how people behave/speak on a daily basis.
