You let Meloetta be for a minute as the director approaches you. You can see Dave, the cameraman, changing the battery pack on his camera.

"Just beautiful," the director compliments. "We'll be getting to broadcast as soon as possible."

Well, that's good news. The sooner that your show gets on the air, the sooner you'll get enough revenue to get Robin's new eye. You look at your girlfriend and sigh in contentment. You're almost there. You'll make it right, just like you promised.

A figure bursts out from from the surrounding trees. A Nidoqueen, a Muk, and Prince Arledge. He frowns when he sees how peaceful everything is. “I came as soon as I could sneak away. I guess that wasn’t soon enough, though.”

“Sorry,” Vance shrugs. “Action’s over.”

Arledge freezes and his eyes go wide. “What... what Pokemon is that?” He points to Meloetta with one hand, and reaches for a Pokeball with the other.

“That’s Meloetta,” you step between them. “She’s a friend, and nobody is going to attack her.”

You saw how his eyes went wide when you said that name. He probably knows who she is, but didn’t believe it. He looks like he’s really thinking, but eventually he relaxes his shoulders. “A friend, huh?” He offers a polite bow.

Meloetta looks happy to receive the attention.

You make your way back to the palace where the rest of the royal family comes to greet you. Meloetta follows at a distance.

Beatrix comes running over, holding her dress up with both hands. “What happened?”

Guile appears from seemingly nowhere and grabs the prince by the ear. “I told you to stay with everyone else!” He let’s go. “I do have to admit, I’m impressed with how you slipped away. I suppose some of my training is getting through after all. But if you ever pull a stunt like that again...”

Clair leans against the prince, keeping her eyes closed. “He’s already thinking about how he’s going to sneak away from you lecturing him.”

Guile grabs the prince by the ear and pulls him away. “Try it twice in one day? I’m getting old, not blind. In my day...”

“Why!” Arledge moans to Clair as he’s hauled off.

She just grins and waves.

“Then I’ll knight you all!” Beatrix looks excited. “This is going to be so awes-” She catches herself, feeling the eyes on her from her parents, the guards, and the servants. “It would be most delightful.”

“It would be a pleasure,” the king announces from behind. “And our honor.”

“Hmm? Oh. Yes.” The queen is staring off into nothing. It looks like she’s taking this pretty hard.

Before you can say anything, Beatrix grabs a sword from a guard and brings it about, almost hitting you. “Sorry!” She can barely contain her excitement. “I need you to kneel for this part.”

Vance takes a knee. “Here? Now?”

You, your friends, and Meloetta are bowing. A guard takes the large sword from Beatrix and offers her a much lighter, smaller one. Beatrix taps Vance on both shoulders and has him recite an oath.

“Omigosh,” Jeanine mutters under her breath. “I can’t wait to tell my mom.”

This time it’s Vance and Robin that give her a glare. The queen looks like she heard that.

It’s your turn. Beatrix taps you on your shoulder with the sword. “Do you promise to protect the weak, act nobly in all endeavors, eschew unfairness, meanness and deceit, and never refuse a challenge from an equal?”

There’s an uncomfortable silence as you stare down at the floor.

Your friends and Meloetta all go through a much more basic vow. To your surprise, Clair backs out. “Not really my thing. But thanks.”

The ceremony breaks and things because a lot more casual. Servants and guards go back to their duties. The king comes forward and the queen follows, if robotically.

“I suppose you’ll be off to continue your journey,” he says. “I’m...sorry things didn’t turn out as we had hoped.”

“Me too,” Beatrix says. “I really wanted a big sister.”

There’s another awkward moment as the queen finally looks directly at you for the first time since she heard the news. She doesn’t seem to be able to find any words.

You hug Queen Josephine. A second later, you feel her arms come around you. It’s warm and safe and you know she’d never let anything bad happen to you.

She’s muttering something as she holds you. You can barely make it out. “I’m so sorry.”

You hold her tighter. Feeling her warmth, her protectiveness, her caring. You feel 16 years worth of it as you try to hug some of it back. Life owes you this.

Like all good things, it comes to an end. You both break it up as tears are wiped away and clothes are straightened. “I promise I’ll keep an eye out.”

“Thank you,” her voice is still broken. “Thank you.”

“You’ll come back and visit some time, right?” Beatrix looks up at you hopefully.

You muss up her hair. You know it’s not really proper, but it just feels right. “I will.”

She leaps into your arms and hugs you. Her fluffy dress softens it as you feel your organs being crushed. She’s really excited.

“You’d better hurry if you’re going to catch the next ferry back,” the king says. “We’ll have a place for you here should you wish to visit for a day, or much, much longer.”

You say your goodbyes as you’re escorted away from the palace. You see the king and Guile discussing Hornbeam as you’re leaving, but you don’t make out exactly what they’re saying.

Part of you wants to stick around, but you figure they probably need some time to decompress after everything in their own ways.

“We don’t have that much time before the next ferry,” Vance says, “but we could make a quick trip somewhere if there’s anything anyone wants.”

The Pokemon center is on the way, right by the dock. Besides that, you think about anything else you might want to do before leaving.

You stop at the Pokemon center. This one was pretty quick. You hand your precious Pokemon over to the nurse and your friends do the same. You have a short time to wait. Just long enough to be boring, but too short to do anything much.

You stretch out on the couch. It’s been a hectic day. No, week. No, month. No, it’s just been hectic since you left on your journey, really. You’ve gotten so much, but it’s been almost non stop. You wonder what your plan is for when this is all over. You look at Devon’s pokeball and lose yourself in thought.

Robin plops down beside you. “How are you doing?”

“I’m okay,” you tell her as she snuggles in against you. You can actually see the docks from the window here. It’s nice.

“I’m glad,” she yawns. “My brave knight.”

You let out a small chuckle. “You’re a knight too now, y’know.”

She doesn’t respond. You look down and see she’s already fallen asleep.

Clair sits down next to you on the other side. “I’m telling Vance tomorrow morning. Before the deadline. I think he’ll be in a better mood about it.”

You glance at her sideways. “Why do you say that?”

She stretches. “They’re going to do it.”

You look back and Jeanine flirting heavily with Vance. He’s look extra confident.

You look at your large friend, Vance. Whatever Clair did to his head to make him insecure about girls, Jeanine seems to be breaking down. You guess it just took the right girl and a lot of persistence.

“Vance is one of the most forgiving people I know. I’m sure you’ll be fine.”

Clair considers your words. “Yeah. You’re right. He is a doormat, isn’t he?” You can tell from her tone she doesn’t really mean that. Probably.

“I’ll be there for moral support,” you tell her. “Just in case.”

“Gfg-me too,” Robin mumbles, apparently awake. She reaches out and grabs Clair’s hand, bringing it to yours. Robin squeezes both together in a show of support.

Clair smiles and blushes for a second before catching herself and taking her hand away. “Alright. Don’t get all gay on me again.”

“Why not? You liked it last time.” You wink, having a little fun.

“M-maybe she only likes us ‘getting gay’ on her when she’s naked,” Robin teases, still half asleep.

Holy crap. Robin teased! Probably due to her being tired and fed up with Clair using ‘gay’ in a derogatory way.

Clair looks as shocked as you probably do. “What?” She lets out a nervous guffaw. “Are you double teaming me now?” Only after the words leave her mouth does she realize her mistake. “Don’t. Don’t even. That’s too easy.”

“So is making you-” You stop as you see the ferry at the dock through the window. “Boats here!”

You and your friends scramble to collect your Pokemon. You all rush down to the docks. Meloetta seems to be following, but avoiding being seen by anyone else

Before you arrive, you see Arledge. He’s wearing a shoddy cloak, trying not to be noticed in the light misty drizzle.

The five of you shuffle onto the ferry. You pretend not to notice the prince coming aboard as well. He looks relieved that you haven’t outed him. He quickly goes into a private room on the ship as soon as he’s let aboard.

Well, if he does want to talk, he doesn’t want to this second. You guess that makes sense. It’s still light out and people are active right now as they board.

This ship is pretty roomy for the price of the tickets. It moves slow though. You won’t be back on the mainland until tomorrow morning.

You head into your room with Robin and practice your flute. Robin takes out the one you gave her and joins it. She’s still not nearly as good as you, but by reminding her of the basics, you set yourself back on course. You feel like you’ve been messing up when it’s really important lately, so getting this down is important.

Meloetta seems to have let herself into your room. You’re not sure how she got here, but she’s a welcome guest. She sings a soft harmony, complimenting the ancient tune you’re working on from the pictures you took of that scroll.

Jeanine laughs. “Of course.” She crawls onto the bed next to the both of you. “It’s been awhile since we’ve just done stuff together. This will be fun.”

She concentrates on you first. Before she gets a reading though, she asks Robin to turn off the lights.

You sit in silence, hearing yourself breath. It’s a little unnerving. Jeanine’s fingers move over your palm, then she taps you on the forehead. “Wow. You’ve really changed.”

“I have?”

“Yup! Your aura is a little different now. Much closer to Dark and Fire.”

Huh. “Does that have anything to do with Devon and mega-evolution?”

She nods. “A bit. You two seem really close. It’s also a reflection of your attitude. Poison isn’t bad. No type is. It’s just a different outlook on life. Fire is more direct. More bright. The Dark typing is misunderstood too. It’s sneaky, but that’s not bad. A lot of people, Pokemon, and other things need to be clever and stealthy to get by.”

You think about that while Jeanine reads Robin. After a few minutes, she comes up with a report. “Fairy, very strong. That’s not surprising.” She concentrates for another few seconds. “Bug.”

“Bug?” Robin repeats.

“Bug,” Jeanine confirms. “Bug types can be indirect, clever in their own way to make up for other weaknesses, diverse, and underrated. Good at taking down psychics, but you already know that.”

You and Robin share a look. Robin does have a way of undermining Clair.

“Let’s hit the spa,” you tell the two girls. “Get pampered.”

You don’t have to tell them twice. They both readily agree and you and your Pokemon quickly get settled into the spa. Before you know it, you’re covered in hot towels, being catered to. It’s good to have money. Your Pokemon seem to be enjoying it too. Destiny bubbles as a machop massages her. Devon seems apprehensive at getting his nails attended to, but relaxes when he sees how laid back you’re being.

Jeanine leans back. “This was a great idea. Especially considering tonight. I think it’s going to be special.” She glances over to you and lowers her voice. “I finally wore Vance down,” she confesses. “I don’t want to stereotype that all guys are just sex crazed and want to go at it all the time, but I’ve never met anyone like Vance who’s so... reserved. I was starting to worry he didn’t really like me.”

You’re not sure if she’s fishing for a compliment, just chatting, or feeling insecure. You know exactly why Vance hasn’t been all up in that yet.

You decide to change the subject. You don’t want to start any drama and accidentally sabotage things. “So, how are things with Houndour and the other Pokemon?”

She relaxes. “Great. She’s really opening up to me. I think she’s burnt out on high pressure battling. No pun intended. We’ve been doing some meditation exercises.”

“I’m really glad,” Robin says. “Ditto is doing great too. He loves battling.”

The three of you chat for the rest of the time at the spa. Feeling pampered, clean, and as beautiful as can be, you leave. Robin kisses you on the cheek and tells you she’ll be in your room.

You bump into Arledge, still wearing his cloak. “Kat. Good,” he takes the hood off. “Remember what you said about the Lapras?”

You nod. “Yeah. People wait for the in waters that belong to Lace Point to get around the ban on catching them.”

“Exactly. My parents avoid the issue because they’re worried it’ll make things harder for me when I’m king if people see the royal family giving in to the mainlands ways. But this isn’t ideological. Lapras are endangered. That ban makes sense.”

You’re starting to get the idea, but you want to confirm. “So you’re here to stop it?”

“No. Maybe. I’m not sure. I brought a Lapras of my own. It’s been in the family for ages. Caught way before they became endangered. I came to see these poachers. If it’s bad, then what kind of king would I make if I ignored it?”

You look out onto the waters as the sun starts to set. You’re close to the place where people were catching Lapras before.

He looks you in the eyes. Not getting an immediate answer, he tries to push passed you. “I’m going to stop them.”

“So what, I just stay here doing nothing until people change their minds?” He looks frustrated. “I can’t just sit around on this.”

“So don’t do nothing!” This guy’s tone is really getting to you. “Spend your time convincing people that outlawing it is a good idea. Tell them there’ll be more Lapras later if you ban catching them now. You’re supposed to think about the big picture. Do the most good, not the quickest.”

He kicks in frustration. “I hate it.” He paces back and forth. “When you first showed up I hoped so hard you weren’t my sister. Now I wish you were. Then you’d be the one that has to be patient. I could be going out, not a care in the world.” His gaze meets yours. “I didn’t think what kind of ruler I’d be before you came along and made me worried. I was just going to rule. Now it feels like a prison.”

“I can get that,” your tone is still frustrated. He gets on your nerves, but you can sympathize. “How about we let off some steam?”

He gives you a funny look. There’s a twinge of hopefulness that says way too much.

“With a Pokemon battle!” You clarify, annoyed.

Just as you’re saying that, Robin comes around the corner. “Are you coming to bed? Oh. Hello.”
