You are Siegfried Schmidt, a former guard from the city of Morsland. Due to various circumstances, you have become the temporary wielder of Galadriel, a holy sword which houses a powerful six-winged angel of the same name. Now you have come to the White Watchtower, a fortress close to the border between the Forsaken Lands and the kingdom of Iseria, to train with the crusaders so that you can protect yourself from the demons that might come after you now that the sword is in your possession.

You've found two new members for the honor guard, and ran into someone who can teach you enchantment while exploring the tower. You still have until the day after tomorrow to figure out who you want to be in the honor guard.

When you finish loading your plate, you look over and see Ganelon still eating by himself. Setting your plate down, you walk over to his table.

"Hey, how's it going?"

Ganelon does not seem to notice your approach until you speak. "Ah, Siegfried. What brings you to my table?"

"Actually, I was wondering if you'd like to join my friends and I at the table over there, since you're sitting by yourself."

"A most generous offer. Normally I sit by myself because I finish my meals quickly to return to my duties sooner, but it should be fine to take my time just this once."

You lead him over to the table where you and the others are sitting. He introduces himself, and goes back to eating. Curiously, you notice he doesn't remove his helmet while he's eating. Instead, the sides of his helm have these weird flaps that come apart and allow him to eat.

"Not gonna take your helmet off?" You ask him.

"It is an old tradition of my order that we do not remove our armor unless completely necessary. That way, we are always ready to fight should we need to."

"Doesn't that get uncomfortable though?" You ask. Wait a minute, you feel like you've had this conversation before with someone...

"Not at all. My armor is specially made to be comfortable to wear. I can even sleep in it."

Wait, he sleeps in his armor? How in the Voi-You know what, you're just not going to question it. If it works for him, then whatever. At least now you know he'll always be ready for a fight when he joins your honor guard.

We could add Roland if you just want a body, but I think we could use a support mage.
Daniel may be old, but we're wielding Galadriel, he could still out live us, plus he has experience and insight. He might notice things others might miss.
>>
>>39230097

Probably want to walk around too. Nice thing about 6 is that it easily allows 3 shifts of 2, or anything else.
>>
>>39230097
What about Joan if you want a support mage? With Berry as her voice she doesn't have any handicap that would prevent her from excelling at the roll.
>>
>>39229811
I'm going to say Justine, Joan, Ganelon, and Nerellian.

I wouldn't add Justine even, but her style of fighting is suited towards defense, making her ideal as a bodyguard.
>>
>>39230155
In the last thread someone asked, and before we got captured and send to the farm, she used more offensive spells. She might be more of an attack mage that support.
>>
>>39230174
nigga you gotta have erika in there, she's the one who seems the most adamant about joining.
>>
I feel like we should spend our downtime working on Full plate of Haste or some shit. If we git gud at haste, I imagine we'd be able to transfer that into the armour, and basically be as agile as we are in our clothes.

Also, we could enchant our helm to have night/eagle vision. Would be useful as fuck.
>>
>>39230307
I for one like the idea of wearing full plate over critical areas like our chest, and wearing hastening clothes underneath them. We could learn how to move like the wind with that arrangement I'm sure, and if we needed to we could just ditch the plate and the sudden loss of weight would allow Seig to feel even lighter on his feet than normal.
>>
>>39230297
She's also the one most likely to get her ass shanked. Her defense is terrible, at best she can be a distraction for the whole two seconds it takes a demon to get in her guard.

A thought occurs to you, and you can't help but ask.

"Erika, you...you don't do that too right? I remember having to persuade you not to wear full plate to a tavern, and even then you brought your greatsword."

"What? No! Why the Void would I wear my armor while I'm asleep?"

"It's actually much more comfortable than you'd imagine, really." Ganelon says obliviously.

"You seriously brought a greatsword into a tavern?" Roland asks incredulously. "Back in Galloway, you could be arrested for something like that."

"Oh come on, what was I supposed to do? The place just got attacked by Andras like two days before hand, who wouldn't keep their sword on hand?"

"People who want to have a peaceful night of drinking, maybe?"

"Oh shut up."

"I'm afraid Erika has always been like that." Daniel says, finishing up his meal. "In fact, I remember back when she was a young initiate, she actually would try and sleep in her armor for a time."

"Hold on, seriously? I was just joking earlier, but you seriously did?"

"Indeed she did. Couldn't sleep a wink like that either, but she kept doing it until Leonard made her stop."

"I was practically a kid at the time, I didn't know any better."

"It's specifically the fact you didn't know any better that worries me."

"Agreed. Even when I was a young page back in Galloway, I never once thought it would be a good idea to sleep in that heavy training armor they gave me. And someone had to tell you to stop before you would?"

"Oh screw you guys, I doubt I'm the only one who's made that mistake."

"Oh really? Because-"

You catch up to Erika before she leaves. You're going to have to talk with her before you make any decisions on whether to let her on the honor guard or not.

"Erika, hold on a second. We need to talk."

"Hm? Alright, sure. What's up?"

"It's about the honor guard. I've been thinking about it, and I decided I needed to talk to you about something first before I made a decision. I know you've been getting on to me about getting reckless back at the border, but the fact is you can be pretty damn reckless yourself sometimes, which is why I'm a little worried about adding you onto the honor guard."

Erika crosses her arms. "Reckless? I am not reckless."

"Really now?" You say dryly.

She relents. "Okay, maybe sometimes. But you're one to talk, especially after what happened at the border."

"Yeah, that is true. That's why I just want you to promise me you'll work on it. It's not that I don't trust you or anything, I'm just worried, you know?"

Erika thinks about it for a moment. Finally, she sighs and nods her head. "Alright, fine, whatever. I'll try to keep it in check from now on. But, you have to promise you'll try to do the same. You're not the only one who's worried you know, how do you think we felt when we find out you got caught and stuck in a farm with a demon lord?"

"I didn't do anything wrong, if I hadn't pulled them away somebody else might have been grabbed by the Scavengers."

Erika punches you in the arm. Not enough to hurt, but enough to get her point across. "The Void you never did anything wrong! You've gotta realize Siegfried, you're not the only one at risk when you get captured. What if Alastor got his hands on Galadriel while you were in the farm? Then we'd all be in trouble, along with you and her."

"So you're saying it would have been better if someone else had gotten caught?"

"That's not-" She sighs. "Look, I'm not saying I don't see why you did it. Odds are I might have done the same thing in all honesty. What I'm saying is that you can't go doing stuff like that anymore. You're job is to keep Galadriel safe, and that means keeping yourself safe as well. And like you said, we worry about you too. When we found out what happened to you, I wanted to go pull you out of the farm with the others, but Laurentius made it clear there was nothing we could do. You could have easily been stuck there for good, until someone pieced together who you were."

You sigh. It's frustrating, but it seems she's just worried for you is all, just like you're worried about letting her on the honor guard. And she does have a point, it would have been really bad if Alastor managed to capture Galadriel while you were in there.

"Alright, you've made you're point. If you keep your brashness in check, I'll try not to do anything as brash as running off on my own either."

"Deal." Erika says, and the both of you shake hands on it.

Now, it's getting close to curfew, so you both go your separate ways. You've got enchantment training first thing in the morning, so you need to be well rested.

The next morning, you make your way to Festus' workshop for your training. You brought along your father's shield today, since you'll be trying to enchant it here today.

Festus is waiting for you inside, with all the necessary tools ready.

"Good morning Siegfried. I hope your ready to learn."

You nod, and place your father's shield on the table. Festus examines it for a moment, admiring your father's handiwork, then nods.

"This is good. It should be able to withstand the saturation just fine."

"Withstand? What do you mean?"

"The process of saturation requires the object's craftsmanship to be at a certain level, or else the aether saturation will cause it to crack and break. This shield is very well made though, so it will do just fine."

"What exactly are we enchanting it with?"

"Something simple to start you off, which I thought might be useful for you given Galadriel's abilities." He pulls out two gloves from under one of his tables and hands them to you. "Here, try these on."

You oblige, and slip them onto your hands. They fit you just fine, and they go well with your enchanted clothes. "What's this for?" You ask.

"It's for the shield." He answers. "Because today, we're going to try and bind that shield to that glove, so that you can switch them at will?"

"Huh?"

"You know how Galadriel can shift her shape, right? I've heard about it from Daniel. Well, with this enchantment, you'll basically be able to shift this shield from glove form to shield form at will. That way, you can shift Galadriel to a two-handed weapon without having to drop the shield, and pull it back out when you shift her back into a one-handed weapon.

Oh, you see. That actually does sound helpful.

"Alright, now hold onto the left glove and the shield. Concentrate on them both, and try to focus aether into them the way you'd focus it through a Foci to cast a spell.

You take a deep breath and focus again. This time you think you see them both shine a little brighter than last time, but it quickly fades away once again. You were sure you'd have it that time, maybe it's because you don't have Galadriel acting as a foci to help you here?

"Damn. Let me try again."

Festus stops you before you do. "No, don't do that. An old rule of thumb is that you should never try more than twice in one day to enchant the same thing. If you try to force it by trying over and over again, you might weaken the aetheric bonds holding the spell and the object together, and the result will be a shoddy enchantment."

"So then I'll just have to wait until tomorrow?"

"Afraid so. Don't let it bother you, enchantment is hard to do at first, but it gets easier with practice. I'd suggest you look for something in the library on enchantment, do some studying before next time. IT might give you the edge you need. But here, come watch me enchant these shields, see how I do it then try to do the same tomorrow when you try again."

-----
You watched Festus demonstrate proper enchantment for about an hour, after which he lets you go. You now have nothing left in particular to do today, you'll just have to wait and hope you do a better job tomorrow.

"Just dropped by to return these two books and borrow something about enchantment." You tell them, returning "Heroes of the Crusades" and "The History of the Crusades".

"Anything in specific?" Berry squawks.

"Yeah, something for beginners I guess?"

"Alright, one second." It says, before Joan leaves to go sort through the shelves. A moment later, she returns with a book titled "Entry Level Enchantment".

"Alright, this works." You tell them. Joan nods, and scribbles down your name and the title of the book you borrowed.

"Glad to help, you can still borrow one other book if you need to." Berry says.

"I swear, this is going to take some getting used to."

"I know. It's better than writing everything down though."

"No, not that. I mean Berry talking about anything unrelated to berries."

Joan chuckles, or does whatever the mute equivalent is at least. "Berry? Is that what you've started calling him." Berry translates, before realizing what he's said. "Wait, no. Berry is name Berry girl give Berry."

"Yeah. Apparently Anna, that girl from Llynn we were trying to find, took to calling this guy Berry because of his obsession with them, so I've just been calling him that since."

"Oh, damn. I was actually going to name him Edgar, but I guess if he's already been named then fine. Besides, Berry is kind of a cute name." The raven translates.

"Edgar? Why Edgar?"

"It's from a book. Doesn't matter though, I think I'll start calling him Berry now too."
>>
>>39232100
"Alright. Well in any case, I should probably go and get started on this book. Thanks for the help." You start to leave, but stop yourself, thinking of something else you should ask.

"Oh wait, before I go I wanted to ask. I know I asked everyone at the table about the honor guard already, but I just wanted to double check with you. Are you sure you'd be fine joining the honor guard?"

"Like I said before, I don't mind." The raven says for her. "Besides, now that I have Berry to talk for me, I don't even have to worry about falling behind or anything now that I can talk. Sort of."

"Alright then, just wanted to double check to make sure. Thanks for the help Joan, Berry."

"No problem, thank you for stopping by."

You head to the knight-captain's office and give him the list of people you want on the honor guard.

"You're not taking Daniel as well?"

"No sir. He's a good man, and I respect him, but he's getting old, and I don't want to risk him getting hurt because of it."

The knight-captain nods. "Hm. That is a fair point. Very well then, I shall have everyone on the list pulled off of patrol duty so they can serve as your honor guard. Things should be organized quickly."

"Thank you sir. Is there anything else you needed from me?"

Laurentius shakes his head. "No, that is all. You're free to go now."

You nod, and exit the captain's office. Now, time for you to study that book on enchantment. Tomorrow, you'll make the enchantment work for sure.

-----
The great horned lord Alastor is thrown though the double doors leading to the throne room. It does not hurt him, but it certainly was intended to. Out from the throne room comes his assailant, a one armed man in black armor, Andras. His glowing red eyes burn beneath his helm like hot coals.

"You damned fool!" He shouts at the offending Lord of Wrath, who nonchalantly picks himself up and dusts himself off. "You had him within your own farm, and not only did you let him go, but the entire farm as well?!"

"Yeah, what of it?" Alastor asks calmly. In ironic contrast, the Lord of Wrath is actually much calmer than the enraged general.

"You could have captured him, killed him, taken Galadriel and kept her there until I could bring her here. So why did you let him go?!"

"If you haven't figured out why already, then I don't know why I even bothered to give you this chance."

"What in the Void are you talking about?"

"He means that there's a reason he let them go." The seated figure on the throne informs him.

"But for what purpose, my lord? Why do you not punish him for his transgression?"

"Because now we've got them right where we want them, dumbass." Alastor explains. "Think about it. The champion, temporary or not, doesn't matter, helped stage a coup in my territory, against my guards, freed my livestock, and escaped back over the border."

"I fail to see how any of that is beneficial to us."

"It is beneficial to us, because it gives us an excuse." The seated figure says. "Though he did it to free himself, what he did could technically be considered an aggressive act against us. An act of war."

"Which means, now we have all the excuse we need to march in and wreak havoc." Alastor finishes.

"But why? Why do we require an excuse?"

"We don't, shit-for-brains. But the humans do."

"The mortals fear us." Malaphas states. "They will do whatever they can to avoid another crusade. And now with this, if we were to attack now, they would see it as the champion of Galadriel's fault."

"They'll make him a scapegoat. We'll go in, kick up a mess to get their attention, and then they'll blame him."

"I do not think it will be so simple. There are many mortals who want to go to crusade, and there are few people who would publicly denounce him for freeing himself and a whole farm of mortals."

"We don't need them to denounce him publicly." Alastor says with a frustrated snort. "All we need to do is make them afraid. After that, they'll do the rest. More than one champion's been killed because someone in power hired an assassin to cut him down before he could drag them into crusade."

"And if that is not the case, or if he should best whatever assassins his traitorous ilk send, then all the better. It has been too long since the mortals were last reminded why they fear us. It is high time we reminded them why they are right to fear us."

Andras scoffs, clearly still unhappy with the plan. "If that is what you wish, then so it shall be."

"Come now Andras, there's no reason to get all mopey." Alastor says, his trademark cruel smile stretching across his face. "I might not have held the new champion down until you came to kill him, but you still have a chance to get your revenge."

Andras perks up at the Lord of Wrath's promise. "And how is that?"

"We're not pulling a full scale invasion. At the very least, not yet. We only need to hit one big city to set everything in motion."

"And what does that have to do with me?"

"Well, our lord, in all his kindness, has decided to put you in charge of this attack. It's your choice where you attack, and if that place happens to be somewhere important to the champion you hate so damn much..."
>>
>>39232579
Realization hits Andras. "Are you suggesting what I think you are?"

Alastor shrugs. "Take it how you will. And if the kid shows up and you happen to run into him, well, I doubt our lord would complain if you finished the job earlier than expected."

Andras eyes the Lord of Wrath cautiously. "Why are you helping me with this?"

"I'm the Lord of Wrath, helping people with a grudge is what I do best. And if doing so should make someone else develop a grudge of his own, well, then that's just more delicious rage for me."

"I see. Very well then, I shall rally the men and put a plan together. I shall give the mortals a reason to fear us." With this last comment, Andras exits down the hallway.

"Pah!" Andras curses, waving a dismissing claw in the direction Andras disappeared to. "I swear, that bastard is no fun at all. Even the new champion is better than him."

"Is that why you requested that I send him to do this?" Malaphas asks from his black throne. "You know that he is not as strong with one arm as he once was, there's is a chance the new champion may defeat him, or even kill him."

"Maybe, we'll see." Alastor responds with a shrug. "I won't shed a tear if that one-armed bastard gets killed, but it should be a fun show regardless. I will feast on the wrath of many mortals soon."

What doomsaying? It's the only natural conclusion of demons launching a 'retaliatory' raid into human territory.

>>
>>39232785
No its not, there are many potential outcomes, yet you posit that the worst outcome is fact and set in stone and unmutable. There isn't a clearer case of doomsaying you could present.

And frankly it reeks of REJOICE faggotry which is always retarded.
>>
>>39232820
War's hell, m8. We don't always get what we want.
And you're deluded if you think that the mortal realms are prepared for a genuine raid by demons. Best we can hope for is that the attack is spotted by a patrol and the cities in its path are evacuated and/or put on alarm.

And it's not even the worst outcome. If you want worst outcome that would be demon lords' plan coming to fruition and leading to fracturing of the mortal kingdoms and war among them over who caused the demon invasion, perhaps in hopes that turning Sieg's head or sword over would placate the demons.
>>
>>39232860
Ok, now that's what I call shadowrunning.
>>
>>39232860
It a hell of a lot more than a mere raid if they manage to hit morsland and which is many days from the border with the tower between the two as well as other things, that or its a small infiltration party.

Also the 'its war' excuse is all kinds of wrong, least of which is its not actually war, so put your shadowruns back in your pants and stop being stupid
>>
>>39232935
You seem enkindled.

you'll just have to suck it up. You're not a god and neither is sieg. It's better to anticipate that shit will happen than lie to yourselves that everything will be alright and then whine about railroading and unfairness of the world.

>Ozzie shitposter shitposting
>>
>>39232935
>many days from the border with the tower between the two as well as other things, that or its a small infiltration party
That's a good point. Not only is Andras' force likely to be fairly small but we should probably get early warning in the form of a patrol or two going missing.
>>
>>39233243
How well are borders watched anyway? A pack of flying demons could cover the distance quickly and deal substantial damage, maybe even torch the place to the ground.
>>
>>39233274
This is something I have wondered frequently in this quest.

The mobility of demon armies sort of suggests that the settlements surrounding the watchtower on the border function more like early warning stations for a demonic incursion than actual towns.
>>
>>39233298
Well I understand that up until this point, at least for some time, the demons were content to snatch random people just from the border zone and didn't bother with actual destructive attacks, which might have led to slack security in the tower and perhaps underestimation of demonic attack potential as well.
>>
>>39233369
Perhaps. I think these border towns should all have central keeps that could hold off on a demonic assault at least until military aid reaches them. It would be a sensible stronghold for the people of the towns and from a militarily strategic view, an economic means of defending the kingdoms borders.
>>
>>39233521
not the guy you're replying to but couldn't it be possible for Andras to teleport his army like he did himself with the lightning like he did at the beginning of the quest?
>>
>>39233274
>>39232935
>>39233521
I think a lot of Morslad's fate will depend on things entirely out of our power. Things like the presence of competent people in Morslad and public perception on the whole Andras incident affecting security.

If there's at least a Watchtower unit there to explain that regular weapons do plenty against demons, it would help a lot.

"Coincidence" could also place a unit of the Righteous Blade there, investigating why a champion was chosen in that place in particular.
>>
>>39233530
If the laws of magic follow anything comparable to the laws of conservation of energy or mass, than teleporting an entire army would logically take leagues more magical effort than teleporting a single black knight, to say nothing of skill and concentration of the caster. If moving whole armies is as simple as waving a wand, then war as we would understand it would become impossible.

In regards to the spell Andras used in the beginning of the quest, we can assume it requires a direct lightening strike to function, in which case only open air structures are vulnerable to it. This vulnerability could be further assuaged with lightening rods.
>>
>>39233549
Maybe the watchtowers should publish pamphlets dispelling common myths about demons and possible weaknesses to exploit.

An uplifting crusader's primer, if you will.
>>
>>39233583
"Excuse me sir, but do you have time to talk about demons and their current threats to our way of life?"
>>
>>39233274
You vastly underestimate how hard it is to raze a large city to the ground, it just won't happen unless they have magical hellfire burning for more than a week straight, then they MIGHT be able to raze it, but that just won't happen
>>
>>39233760
If this is medieval era city construction, it will be much easier to raze than modern equivalents. Thatch roofs and all wooden construction allow fire to spread VERY quickly.

But, yea, if the inhabitants are present and actively fighting the blaze, it will be much more difficult to spread.
>>
Looks like things are about to get more interesting. And dark maybe. We'll see.
>>
>>39233797
It's not entirely medieval, its also mostly stone brickwork and masonry from what was described and shown in the first 2 threads, so no, it won't be that easy to raze to the ground.

>>39234151
>And dark maybe
Well that would be a significant tonal shift, and most likely detrimental to the quest
>>
I awaken.

>>39233274
>How well are borders watched anyway?
The watchtower watches them as best they can, but it's a lot of ground to cover. You'd imagine they have some way to detect large scale movement over the border though.
>>39233369
>Well I understand that up until this point, at least for some time, the demons were content to snatch random people just from the border zone and didn't bother with actual destructive attacks, which might have led to slack security in the tower and perhaps underestimation of demonic attack potential as well.
This. The demons haven't done much besides kidnappings near the border since the last crusade ended about 200 years ago. What made them go quiet for so long is anyone's guess, but as a result security has gotten pretty slack. The exception to that is the Grey Watchtower, which is pretty well known for it's tight security, as well as it's gloomy demeanor.
>>39233521
Most major cities near the border do have a keep and a sturdy wall, usually left over from the days when demonic incursions were much more common. Small little hamlets by the border like Llynn have nothing of the sort though.
>>39234151
I wouldn't say "dark", but trouble is indeed on the horizon.
>>
>>39234693
How screwed are the major towns if they were sieged? Are they so lax that they lack a stockpile of supplies?
>>
>>39234767
sage anon, sage

>>39234693
>I wouldn't say "dark", but trouble is indeed on the horizon.
well the implied sacking of your hometown and the murder of all your family and friends goes well and truly into dark
>>
>>39234775
No use speculating the worst outcomes. We'll just play it by ear like always do.
>>
>>39234775
Don't automatically assume the tragic backstory cliches.

It COULD happen, but it might also NOT happen. We just don't have a lot of sway as Siegfried.

Change POV to Reinhardt?
>>
>>39234767
>How screwed are the major towns if they were sieged? Are they so lax that they lack a stockpile of supplies?
They're not quite that lax. Even if the demons have left them alone for the past 200 years, that doesn't mean they haven't come into conflict with other kingdoms in that time. Major cities will have the basic supplies needed to withstand a basic siege, but they're not well equipped to handle demonic enemies.
>>
>>39236022

Town guard in Siegfields old town seemed competent, however demons are out of there depth.

Biggest question will be how many small villages get run over in the process.

Also, big kingdoms will get intimidated by the demons. No telling how.many have been infiltrated. They think they have peace, but the border towns and villages know better. And don't get the type of help they need. Just left to suffer in there own.

I guess the idea is to make it so that the sword seems cursed and any wielder will suffer.

Make it so that it is more likely to be assasinated if someone gets it and ideally lose or seal the sword. without it, stopping a full invasion is harder. Especially if there is little warning.

just passing to say that i'm really disapointed on you guys leaving Daniel out, he is a very useful support mage(that we don't have in the guard right now) and has proven to be able to pull his own weight.

Besides, I think he would be really happy and honored to be part of it since this Galadriel business is very important for him
