You are Urist Twelfthbay, and there are really only so many ways you can say that you're a short, sturdy creature fond of drink and industry. Problem is, it bears repeating that you're a dwarf, especially in a place like Gamindustri where "cute girl" is synonymous with "willowy elven body type" (and where the laws of the universe dictate that everyone who's anyone must be a cute girl, even dwarves).

Introductions have always been a real bitch to handle. Every time you tell people you're a dwarf, you experience every reaction under the sun, from smartasses who ask whether you're Grumpy or Dopey all the way to dumbasses who ask where you're hiding your pot of gold and/or tall pointy red hat. Even worse is when someone asks where your beard is, or why you look like a scrawny little girl instead of a barrel-chested slab of muscle.

It gets real tiring to correct those people, especially while you're reflexively punching 'em in the stomach (and doubly so when they're puking mosaics all over the ground).

Anyway, you and your friends are currently hiding inside a mini-fort of your own creation. You're all half-dead, which is preferable to being OUTSIDE the fort and becoming entirely-dead. Out there lies the Forgotten Beast (which is also of your own creation because you done fucked up), and it's the unholy cross between a black widow, a feathered raptor, and a small bus; individually, its component parts would be enough to kill you quickly.

Combined, those three things make up a monstrosity that COULD kill you quickly, but would prefer to subject you to unimaginable pain and suffering before ending it.

Right now, you're helping Estelle solve the whole "half-dead or entirely-dead" issue. You don't quite get the details, but from what you can tell, the Dragon Warrior is going to fool the laws of the universe into thinking that your mini-fort is an Inn that can heal you all back up to peak condition, and then she'll temporarily break the universe hard enough that it becomes a reality.

The only downside is that at some later point in time, the universe will push back against Estelle hard enough to temporarily break /her/. She's insistent that a temporary time-out later is much better than permanently dying here and now, and while you can't help but agree with that logic, you KNOW this decision is gonna loop right back around and bite you in the ass. Asses. Whatever.

Rokko quietly helps Estelle put the finishing touches on the "Inn" sign, although you're absolutely certain that no sign in the history of Gamindustri was ever bloodily hand-drawn on a cavern floor smack-dab in the middle of nowhere. On top of that, they're BOTH basically prone on the floor, pouring every ounce of energy into a desperate scribble.

You'd all agreed that /you'll/ work on carving out a fortification from one of the fort's walls. Once you're all healed, you'll need to be able to take potshots at the Forgotten Beast writhing in pain outside, and /fast/. Doesn't matter that it'll be half-blind, once it gets over the pain from you shooting it in the eyes, it'll be that much more determined to get in and tear you to shreds.

"And it'll know when the Inn kicks in," Estelle wheezes in response.

The Blue Bomber lets her arm fall back against the floor with an audible electronic sigh. "S-Sign, complete."

Okay, what no-

>>
>>39227451
FUCK YES!
>>
>>39227473
You almost jump out of the skin as a little ditty echoes through the cavern, impossibly high and cheery. Everything feels absolutely wonderful- you feel healthier than you have in /days/- but your happiness is sort of offset by the complete and eerie silence after the music fades. You can't hear the Forgotten Beast Momuz writhing in pain anymore.

"Okay!" Peppy and refreshed once more, Estelle's back on her feet in a flash, heels bouncing silently against the floor- it's eerie how quickly she draws that big gilded sword-and-board of hers, and you edge away as magic begins crackling around her in an almost visible aura. "Almost done opening a hole in that wall, Urist?"

You gulp and nod, feeling sweat beading on your forehead. That fucking monster spider looms large in your imagination, and the hairs on the back of your neck rise up as you envision Momuz standing just outside the mini-fort, poisonous jaws at the ready.

"S-Systems, ready." Whatever the Inn did for Rokko, it seems that it was limited to her... to her innards, for lack of a better word. You can still see every bit of that last battle etched into her damaged armor. That's not stopping her from charging that arm cannon of hers with a barely-audible sound that you can feel in the roots of your teeth. "Let's go."

Right. Fine. Your gauntleted fingers delve into the rock, ready to chip that last bit away-

[ ] [OPEN FIRE] with your crossbow the moment you finish the fortifications. You'll help 'em shoot Momuz before he gets a chance to do anything; you brought him into this world, you'll sure as hell take him out.
[ ] [DUCK] because you're all but certain Momuz is going to spew gigantic sticky webs in your direction, and you don't want to get caught up in the rush.
[ ] [DECONSTRUCT] Actually, fuck fortifications and fuck hiding behind walls. You and Estelle will take that bastard on in hand-to-hand while Rokko provides fire support.
[ ] [DIGGY DIGGY NOPE] Actually, fuck fighting this monster head-on. You're going to dig another exit and ambush Momuz from behind.

>[X] [OPEN FIRE]

Naturally, Momuz was waiting for you lot to show yourselves. The moment you open up a firing slot into the rough stone wall, it's filled with the Forgotten Beast's ugly mug, made even uglier by its ruined ichor-leaking eyes- you can't help the shudder of fear that travels right up your spine and into the reptilian hindbrain that dispenses with the heroics and screams in primal terror, and you KNOW that it's going to let loose with a barrage of sticky webs that'll sentence you to a lingering suffocating death-

You drop the terror down a chasm and crush it with a drawbridge. Besides, unfortunately for Momuz, you lot were waiting for /him/.

One shot from your crossbow is all you've got time to fire, and although you're pretty sure it hit an eye, you just don't have the sort of immediate damage output that would kill it in one hit (barring ridiculous luck, of course).

But that's okay, because you've got your friends for that kind of stuff.

A roiling fireball of technomagic the size of- well, the size of /you/- briefly flashes past your face, raw energy packed with everything Rokko's got, and it all somehow fits into that dinky little firing slot you carved. Momuz's face takes the brunt of the blast, burning away its venomous ichor before it escapes out of the monster's broiling orifices.

Estelle's magic doesn't even need to pass through the fortification- there's the unmistakable crackle-hum of divine electricity, and THERE'S the searing light that somehow doesn't blind you or force you to shield your eyes. Lightning strikes underground and finishes what Rokko started, ending the bloodstained saga of Momuz the Forgotten Beast.

The Blue Bomber peers out through the firing slot, glowing eyes probably picking out details you don't have a hope of spotting. "M-Mission, accomplished."

"YES!" You're suddenly subjected to an awful lot of hair-ruffling (well, it's helmet-polishing, but it's the thought that counts). "Score one for The Legendaries!" crows Estelle. "That was basically a boss-level monster! A legendary in and of itself! Isn't that right, Urist?"

Well, okay, it IS a Forgotten Beast, but-

"See? I have a knack for figuring these things out!" There's a sort of manic excitement to Estelle's helm-ruffling.

... you can't help but feel that she's trying to take your mind off the fact that YOU were the one dumb enough to accidentally create a Forgotten Beast in the first place. Now's probably not the time to call her out on it, though, so you scowl a little and try to slip out from Estelle's grasp.

Rokko's inspecting the fortification, running metal hands along the rough stone. "I-Indestructible except, when it wants to be," she murmurs. "O-Or. When you want it, to be. I-Is this, normal for you, Ur-rist?"

Right. This IS the second time she's seen you pull something like this- but either way, you can't help but nod. Rokko nods back, studying you silently for long enough that it's almost sort of awkward-

"Okay. Time to loot the corpse!" Estelle bursts out, letting you go to also run her hands along the fortified wall. "We can never have enough gold, and maybe it'll drop some sort of legendary equipm- um, where's the door, Urist?"

Yeah. Well. About that...

[ ] [LOOT] Deconstruct the fortification so that you can go out and loot Momuz's corpse. You doubt it has any items on it, but there's good eating on a gigantic feathered spider!
[ ] [LEAVE] Deconstruct the fortification, but leave Momuz's corpse and get the hell out of this cavern as fast as you can. This whole shebang was loud enough to attract undue attention...
[ ] [DIGGY DIGGY HOLE] Don't deconstruct the fortification. Dig a tunnel away from this place- hell, if you're lucky, you'll dig a way OUT of this mountain range. Leanbox, here we come!

Remember, don't leave abandoned fortifications all over the place. Or suddenly to get infestations of monsters civilizations or, nightmare of nightmares, Tucker's Kobolds. Plus, it'll royally fuck over your chances to get a permit later when you get slapped with tons of illegal building fines.

In the time it takes you to turn the fortification into a mere rock block, you manage to explain to Estelle that doors are, frankly, horrible things that provide about as much security from outside threat as strong language and a stiff breeze. When you say that four walls and a ceiling can't be beat, you REALLY mean four goddamn /walls/.

Judging by your surrogate big sis's blank stare, you're having some trouble wrapping Estelle's mind around that. "Eh? But they're indestructible walls, right? No way in, no way out..."

Unless you're there to deconstruct it, yeah. It's a dwarf thing, you add as you step out of the hole you made. After the events of the past few minutes, you're sure as hell keeping your crossbow out,

"A-A room with, virtually no escape," Rokko murmurs carefully in that electronic buzz of hers, stepping out after you. "That. Sounds-"

- like a glitch? Yeah, you've heard that before. Except it's a /feature/ for you. In way too many instances, it's pretty much the only way you can survive.

Rokko's silent for a few moments. "S-Sorry. Did not, intend to p-put it like. That."

You wave it off. If THAT sort of comment was enough to set you off, you'd have gotten locked up for violent murder /long/ ago.

All three of you are quiet as you go over Momuz's cooling corpse- or, well, you and Estelle inspect it, while Rokko keeps an eye out. Apparently, biological enemies don't do a whole lot for her. Against all odds, Estelle finds a few dozen gold pieces and some sort of earring (the worksmanship is pretty solid, from where you're standing). You, on the other hand...

"I'm never gonna get used to that," Estelle whimpers as you finish cramming the last bits of a car-sized monster into a backpack-sized backpack. The black-haired swordswoman's got her hands up against her eyes, and she looks faintly queasy. "It's like... like cramming a square peg into a round hole! And then it works!"

(Cont.)
>>
>>39229381
You zip up your pack- you can do WONDERS with forgotten beast meat, and you think you salvaged some silk and possibly a little venom, although you won't know until you get a chance to fully butcher Momuz. Between that and the chunk of Sharicite, you should be set for a while-

And then you whirl on Estelle. Look, you TOLD her not to watch if it makes her uncomfortable!

"Never!" she gasps, tottering over to ground herself by... rooting her hands on your shoulders and leaning against you. "I'm honor-bound to embrace everything about my little sisters, even if they do legendary things that defy all laws of physics! And stuff! Oooargh."

Oh gods- if Estelle throws up on you, you're going to fucking cry right here and now.

"I-I'm not going to throw uooOOARGH-" she groans. Thankfully, you're not vomited on. Instead, a few hundred more pounds of weight settles onto your shoulders, nearly pushing you into the ground- if you hadn't locked your knees and /strained/, you'd be fucked right now because GODDAMMIT Rokko, what the hell!?

"H-Helping," the Blue Bomber deadpans- she's got her armored hands on Estelle's shoulders, except when SHE leans, it's with all the force of a 400 pound gorilla in robotic armor. Rokko leaning on Estelle leaning on you is gonna murder your shoulders. "Skinship is. Important, in establishing g-good relations."

Skinship is gonna end up killing you if they don't stop leaning on you!! C'mon. Planning, what to do next, figuring out how to get out of here without /dying/-

[ ] [ESCAPE] Backtrack until you're in the right tunnel, and then focus on getting through this cave system as quickly as possible. You've got to get to Leanbox, after all, preferably before Estelle starts glitching!
[ ] [MEANDER] Continue what you'd planned before: casual exploration of as much of the cave system as you can. You're healed up, after all!
[ ] [PIPE MONSTERS] Remember those monsters that Keeper was trying to herd into a side tunnel? Try going there. You're curious despite yourself how that all turned out.

DF is probably one of the few games that's got straight-up decomposition rules and miasma, so yeah, Momuz's corpse is subject to that. It works by tracking how old the corpse is. And then retroactively applying it when you take it out; it doesn't actually track the rot of the item inside the container last I checked. Which makes the backpack a time singularity that retroactively applies effects when you remove items. However, at one point you could 'shred' the backpack using various methods and regurgitate items which the game wouldn't check for... a while.

I mean if we just so happen to wander around the area that the fight was while making sure estelle was okay then who can blame us right?

But what if we do this standing on a fortress mode stockpile? Stuff doesn't ever rot if it sits in a stockpile.

Stockpiles don't exist in Adventure mode; however, given the whole point is to just avoid having the universe run a check on the current decay of the item before you can convert it into something this would likely work. Most of the glitches in game involve sleight-of-hand. Avoiding certain checks, forcing others that don't belong, weird interactions.

It's really no choice at all. You're all adventurers at heart- if there's a cavern that needs exploring and even the slightest hint that loot may be found, then it's a foregone conclusion. Estelle and Rokko need absolutely no convincing. Maybe that says something about the way Gamindustri's set up.

Sure, Keeper was strong enough to thoroughly thrash two bloodied veterans (and yourself, although to be fair, you didn't really do much to help that time), but that doesn't even enter into the equation- if narrative convention has anything to say about it, then she's probably coming back. It's just a question of how fast someone can come back from being vaporized.

Besides, Keeper was carting around a goddamn chunk of SHARICITE, of all things. That's the sort of treasure that'll remove ANYONE'S inhibitions vis-a-vis risks to one's life.

When you all set off again, there's some sort of unspoken agreement that you're not privy to: for the first time since forever, you're not leading the party. Estelle's leading the way, and before you can even think to protest, Rokko's bringing up the rear, you're all walking in a single-file line, and you're sandwiched smack-dab in the middle.

... to be honest, you're not all that broken up about not being in the front. Maybe you would have been, before you screwed up everything and summoned a gigantic monster and helped to nearly get everyone killed.

For the first time in what seems like WAY too long, you take a nice long swig from your tertiary barrel of booze as you walk through the tunnel (since you were there, you all decided to see what those damn pipe monsters were up to). Suddenly, a whole lot of things seem clearer- time to get down to business.

You focus your diagnostic abilities on the girl walking in front of you, ridiculous pink scarf-cape and all. Immediately, you're hit by a wall of details that you have absolutely no way to make sense of.

Old. It's old, old... coding? Gibberish? You're not sure which, but you're getting the sense that it's like those Lowee cities that give you the heebie-jeebies: new and shiny edifices built right on top of forgotten ancient ruins, with layers going all the way down to times unknown. Estelle's much the same way: underneath that cute-and-peppy exterior and all those neat flashy tricks, she's like a framework of high-powered technobabble bits built on top of a robust basic workhorse, 256-bits growing out of 128-bits growing out of 32-bits growing out of 16-bits growing out of 8-bits.

Somehow, despite all the goddamn reasons as to why this's a dumb thing to think... you can't help but feel a little embarrassed. Like you might as well have ripped Estelle's goddamn clothes off and peered into her soul.

As to the glitch that Estelle is certain that it will come: oh, it's there, nestled deep inside her... coding? Soul? Around where the 8-bit bits are. And it's gestating like a glitchy parasite, slowly worming up toward the surface. When it DOES hit, she's got safeguards for that eventuality, but it'll only happen after the glitch... takes her out of commission for a while, or whatever it'll do.

You can probably reach in there and try to do something about the glitch. Maybe. You've never, never, NEVER used DF Hack for something like this before, and you don't even know where you'd begin. Honestly, Estelle would be in a better place to take care of this. But maybe if you gave it some time, see what the glitch'll develop into...

A thought strikes you out of nowhere. What the hell did you do with Keeper's red rock? The damn thing that she used to summon minions on top of your head?

>What did you do with the Red Rock? CHOOSE ONE:
[A1] [LEAVE] it on the ground. All you need to know is that it's a piece of Keeper's dungeon, she can use it to hurl monsters at you, and that it's none of your business anymore- just so long as you don't have it on your person.
[A2] [DESTROY] the damn thing. The fewer pieces of Keeper's dungeon that are lying around, the fewer places she can summon her minions to. She can only directly summon 'em where she's claimed land, after all.
[A3] [KEEP] Keeper's red rock. Sure, you'll risk her popping up when you least expect it, possibly with company in tow- but if you can find some way to leverage the magics kept inside the damn thing, maybe you can strike back at her.

>What will you do about Estelle's glitches et al? CHOOSE:
[B1] [SOLVE] the glitches! Or try to, at least. May as well see if you can give it your best shot. (ROLL REQUIRED)
[B2] [ALERT] Estelle about it. Ask her what she wants done about it, if anything. She's bound do know her own glitches better than you do.
[B3] [NOTHING] Leave it alone for now. Maybe if you give it more time to gestate, you'll be better able to ID it and figure out a countermeasure.

OKAY, this is as good a place to stop as any! The winning choices were:

>[X] [ALERT] Estelle re: that glitch!

Next thread will tentatively be on FRIDAY, 4/10, starting from 9-ish pm EST. Updates, as usual, will be on https://twitter.com/BlorpQuest, and questions and stuff can go either here or ask.fm/BlorpQuest. Thanks for participating, guys, and I hope you enjoyed the thread!

... the second part of the Mojang POV bonus will have to wait until next time, sadly!

>>
>>39231043
It's stupid at face value, you can't transfer a glitch it depends on the entire code structure. Or at least enough that you'd have to rewrite a lot of code, and if you can do that glitches are a relatively minor thing.
