The year is 2089, and on the surface, this world seems just the same as ours. If you look more closely though, you will find psychics, mages, mythological monsters and more, all hidden from the general populace.
You are an agent of the Order of the Magus Hunters, the organisation keeping this secret from the rest of the world. They are troubleshooters, police, military and assassins all in one, and all so that the world can be safe.

The options are a guideline, not an absolute, which is why I will always include a Write in option. I may occasionally forget to add it but feel free to do so anyway. Some options I list are good, some are bad, most won’t be really awesome. I leave it up to you to find ways to do that.
Also feel free to ask things if they’re not entirely clear. I reserve the right to dodge the issue if it’s done for plot reasons, but otherwise I’ll gladly provide more information.
>>
>Last time on Magus Hunter Quest: You finish work on the training room, find Tobias’ research journal and hunted a Werewolf alongside an oculus agent Helena and her Wōdenshund Dax.

“Hey, uh, I was dropped off by my handler, would you mind if I hitched a ride and used your place to crash for now? I’ll get them to pick me up tomorrow morning, and their HQ”,Helena points to Loggins and his team who are loading into their vans, “Is a bit out of my way.”

“Sure Helena, come along. We’ve got a spare room or two.” You reply.

The other team takes care of the werewolf corpse. Cerebrum chirurgeons are always happy to have some mystical things to cut up. Katherine says she’ll send a message to the werewolf’s boyfriend tomorrow morning.

The way back home is pretty quiet, with all of you being tired from the long day. Still, your first Type C mission went pretty well. When you get to the mansion, Helena seems impressed, letting out a whistle.

“Bloody nice place you have here! Wish the Oculus gave me something like this too. All I have is my little flat. Heh, I’d even be able to take you home with me!” That last part she says to Dax, who lets out a happy bark.

You show her to one of the unoccupied rooms, where she thanks you for the lift and place to stay and then closes the door behind her.

After siphoning off more of your energy to Wooster, you quickly fall asleep.

-

You feel an entity. It’s watching you. But not just you. And not just watching. It interferes with…

Everything.

-
>>
You’re woken up by someone talking to you, and not your usual alarm. “Good morning sir.”

You just up to see a faint outline of a person shimmering next to your bed. “Wooster? Is that you?”

“Yes sir. I believe it was about time to wake you up, your alarm has been going off for almost half an hour.” The spectre says.

You look at your clock. It’s 7:13. You slept through your alarm as usual. Wait no, that’s wrong. You always wake up at 6:45 on the dot. You know it’s not right, but somehow it feels as if it’s always been like this, sleeping through most of your alarm.

“Wooster, you’ve been able to… Experience me sleeping for the past few nights, no?” You ask.

“Yes sir.”

“And is there anything strange that you’ve noticed?”

“No sir, only that you sleep through your alarm every morning and wake up about half an hour late.” He says. You know that’s not right. The first night you woke up at 6:44, you still remember the conversation you had with Milly about it.

“And the previous owner, did he have an odd sleeping habit?” You ask him.

“Oh, Master Patterson barely slept at all. With him being immortal I’m not sure how sleeping even worked for him. He usually stayed up far into the night doing research, and was up again before I was.”

Hmm, nothing similar to him then. Something weird is definitely going on, but it might not be related to the house itself… You think back to your dream. There was… Something there. You can’t describe it anymore. You’re barely remembering it as it is.

You head downstairs to the dining room where everyone is already assembled and eating. Even Milly is there eating breakfast. Helena is happily chatting with Raphael.

“There we go, sleepy-head!” Blake shouts at you. “You should really find a different alarm, you always sleep through this one.”

“I…” You hesitate for a moment. This is going to sound weird to them. “Have I always slept this long?”

The noise around the table gets a bit more subdued, and Blake responds to you. “Erm, yes?”

“Milly. On the first day, remember when we found out about Wooster, the spirit. I woke up at exactly 6:44, didn’t I?”

“No sir, It was at 7:16. I have it logged. Would you want me to check it?” Even Milly manages a slightly puzzled look.

“No, that won’t be necessary.” You say. You think for a moment, but it’s interrupted by a worried Raphael.

“Sir, is there something wrong?” The entire room is looking at you now.

>1. Yes. There is something wrong. (explain strange sleeping pattern)

Well this is becoming more and more ominous.
>explain it to them.
Is there any being or magic that could mess with time itself to such extent? Or memories?
Or are we just going bonkers?
Are there divination magics that could pierce past such interference? Does Oculus have gadgets that could reveal discrepancies such interference could cause?
>>

We're a telepath, so being vulnerable to odd afflictions should be in the Order's records.

Maybe, too soon to say though. I find it almost too condescending and hypocritical to say on my part but always remember to pay attention to even mundane irregularity in our line of work. We deal with crazy stuff and I'm not exempt from examination either just because I'm the boss. Not anything to worry about yet though, so don't worry.
>>
>>39219952
Or maybe we're slipping through parallel universes? Could such a thing be detected, I don't know, with radiological examination?
>>
There'll be a slight 10-minute delay or so before I can begin to write, my apologies. IRL stuff and all that.

“Yes. There is something wrong.” You tell them. You explain to them that you experienced the same events differently. You woke up at 6:44 that first night. You always get up at that time and take a quick shower. But the last 2 mornings, you slept through your alarm, and the entire world reacted as if that was something you always did, and in fact everyone remembers those times before it as if you’ve always slept in.

They all stay silent and stare at you. It takes a few moments before anyone says anything.

“I’ve… Never heard of anything like that.” Raphael says. “I mean, my best guess would be time travel, but the Order is extremely tight-lipped abou-”

“Not time travel.” Milly interrupts.

“How would you know?” Blake asks.

“I have access to information some of you do not.” she replies. “All I can safely tell you is that it is not time travel. What limited data we have might indicate dimensional crossing or merging, or a myriad of other half or unknown phenomena. What I find the most alarming is that only Vindicator Primus Weston has had such an experience.”

“Could any of that be detected? Raphael couldn’t find anything wrong with me yesterday, and while my mind-scan showed nothing wrong I had the odd feeling there was still something off about it.” You tell them.

“I will have to do some research about that.” Milly says.

“It hasn’t really had any drastic effects though, has it?” Nathan asks. “And as far as I understand it there’s not much we can do about it right now until we know more? I suggest we just go on with our day and keep an eye out for strangeness. I suppose you and Milly, and maybe Raphael could probably do research about it, sir, but the rest of us can’t.”

“Milly, go ahead and do your thing. The rest of you, I don’t really have anything for you. Do as you see fit.” You tell them.

As they exit, you intercept Helena though. “Hey, I haven’t really thanked you for your help yet.”

“Oh, don’t worry about it. And if there’s anyone you should thank it’s Dax. I just translate for him.” She says.

“Translate?”

“Well, not literally. I’ve trained him since he was a pup, and I know what his body language and signals mean. And he doesn’t actually let other people boss him around. They tried that once. I had to step in to prevent him from being terminated.” As if on cue, Dax barks after she says this.

“So how old is he then?” You ask.

“Four years. We just celebrated his birthday three weeks ago in fact.”

“So how far away do you live? It might be good to call on you again.”

“Oh my, aren’t you a bit direct?” She winks.

“I, err. I mean for tracking.” You start.

“Don’t worry, I know what you meant. I just like teasing people.” Helena lets out a hearty laughter. Quite the pleasant change from that other Oculus agent you work with.

“Anyway, I live about fifteen minutes that way, and my station is just a little bit further than that.” She waves towards the east. “It’s not very big, just a small office me and some other people from the area have to report to every day to get our assignments. But yeah, here’s my number. If you need me you’ll be able to contact me directly. I can clear it with my own superiors afterwards.”

“What kind of creatures has Dax tracked so far? What was most dangerous, biggest, most elusive one?” You say.

“Oh, quite a lot of things. Werewolves seem to be one of the more common ones. Once had to track a gryphon. That was pretty scary, but they took the thing down non-lethally without it ever coming near us. The hardest was probably… Well, I’m not sure if the thing actually has a name. Not like the higher-ups would tell me. It was this snake-lizard demon thing. Summoned by a wild magus, ate half a town then vanished. Dax was only two years old then, and hadn’t had too much experience in the field yet, so it was quite a test.” She tells you about tracking it for weeks. Eventually there was an adrenaline-pumping chase, ending with five squads of the Vindex killing it, albeit with heavy casualties. “I was just really glad I got to retreat the moment they cornered it.”

“Wow, hard top that. So what’s your day to day life then? You don’t get missions every day, do you?” You ask her.

“Well, I mostly take care of Dax and patrol the area. He’s been known to pick up on things faster than equipment at HQ. My reporting in is mostly a formality. But the Oculus is pretty big on control over its members.”

“How’s the Oculus? My experiences with it have been… Awkward to say the least.”

“Oh yeah, the big mysterious eye in the skye. I admit the higher-ups can be quite secretive, and we’re a bit more closed off from the rest of the Order than the Vindex or Cerebrum, but at least in the lower ranks I’d say it’s not an issue. They don’t go as far as to invade our privacy.”

“Hmm.” You wonder if Milly is the exception then. Or perhaps it’s simply something else. You pretty much figured out she’s part of an experiment of some kind.

“You had anyone specific in mind?

Milly has 4 dice, it's not terrible.
>>
You see a car approaching on the driveway and move to open the front gate.

“Never mind. Thank you - and thank you, Dax! - for your time.” You tell her.

“No problem. I guess I’ll be seeing you around. Until the next time.” She waves at you and smiles while getting into the car with Dax.

A few minutes later you’re back inside. You knock on Milly’s door and ask her what she’s researching so you avoid doing the same work twice. She assures you that she’s using Oculus resources you don’t have access to so you don’t have to worry about that.

You go to the living room and find Raphael there, reading through more tomes. He doesn’t even notice you. You can hear Nathan and Liam in the training room, and through the window you see Katherine trying to tame the wilderness that is your garden.

You sit down with your tablet and search through Order and Vindex records and databases. You try to filter on things like memory changes and paralel dimensions, and while you find a lot, nothing seems to be applicable to your situation.

When you get up to go get lunch, Raphael is startled as he finally notices you.

“Oh, sir it’s you. When did you get here?” He asks.

“Just after Helena left. You seemed so engrossed in your reading material that I didn’t want to disturb you. Anyway, let’s go grab something to eat, no?” You say.

At the dining table, Milly conveys what she found. “I believe it might have something to do with reality warping. It’s not a very common occurrence, but it’s believed that it sometimes just happens due to a magic build-up in certain areas. No one generally notices except for some powerful psychics. Of course, there were other possibilities, but this one seemed to be the most likely in your case.”

It seems to check out, but you somewhat doubt it’s random. Those dreams you’ve been having and those visions…

“Could you be able to detect that magic build-up somehow?” You ask.

“I might have some instruments for that, but I would require the help of an actual mage.” She looks at Raphael. He looks at you with a question on his face. You nod.

“Very well, I’ll help.” Raphael says.

“What are the other possibilities then?” You ask Milly.

“The second most likely is a parallel crossover. The conditions are deeply rooted in meta-dimensional geometry and would take a lecture of roughly five hours to explain so I will refrain from doing that. The baseline is that parts of one dimension intersect with another. This can have a myriad of effects including the one you went through. In your case it would be you being swapped with the you from another dimension if said other dimension is similar enough to your own. The odds of this occurring are phenomenally low though, and the Oculus has reported no odd dimensional shifting as of late.”

“The last one that came to my attention was memory editing. However, you are a strong psionic yourself not to mention a telepath too, so editing yours would take a team of experts beyond most of the order. In the case that you were lead to believe you woke up earlier before this, only you had to be edited, but perhaps that little edit was to cover up a larger edit to yourself. I believe an edit to all of us including the spirit and editing the Oculus logs to be out of the question.

You Tell the rest of the group to start working on an R&R room while you go to your office and meditate.

You push your mind inward and scan every little part of it. It takes you several hours of tedious and boring work, but it reveals nothing new. The same lingering sensation that something is wrong is there, shrouding the fact that you found everything to be ok.

Eventually, you quit. You went over it several times and found nothing, and you’re getting frustrated. Doing this needs a calm mind, not a frustrated one.

When leaving your office you hear Katherine and Nathan arguing about decoration. They don’t seem to have done much for the room, though Liam and Blake have cleaned it up and started working on some cupboards. Over dinner you hear that they went out with the minivan to get some stuff out of their own pocket.

“I’ve got my DnD 9th edition books and supplies lying upstairs in my room,” says Blake,”It needs a proper place to be stored. IT can’t just stay stuffed into my suitcase forever.”

Milly and Raphael get to the table later. Raphael looks exhausted. Milly looks confused. “Sir, Raphael and I ran the tests, but they came back negative. There’s no magic buildup. In fact, all of the ambient magic is funnelled North by the magic circle. It’s literally impossible to have a reality warp like that happen here.”

“What exactly were the tests?” You ask her.

“I believe most of the science would bore you sir, but I basically used Vindicator Raphael’s magical energy for a series of tests that would reveal the existence of such a buildup and allow me to calibrate my devices to be able to spot it. As a result it left him feeling tired and drained.” Milly tells you.

“Seeing how you came across some more things concerning the circle, is there anything else you found out?”

“No sir. The magic released was immediately collected by the circle and pushed North, as I previously mentioned. This is most likely the same way it siphons the magic of the ley lines.”

“Could something be caused by a buildup of psionic energy? Maybe an experiment left behind by Tobias?” You ask.

“Doubtful sir,” Raphael tells you. “At least for the last part. Tobias didn’t seem to have any knowledge about psionics. At least, none of the tomes have any information on it, and I haven’t seen him write anything about it so far.”

“Psionic energy doesn’t work that way sir.” Milly picks up the thread. “It is generated by powerful individuals and any excess is bled into their surroundings where it dissipates harmlessly. Even putting the worlds most powerful psychics in a room together will have no special effect on the environment.”

“Well, whatever this might be, it's might just be focused on myself and/or my psychic abilities.” You tell them. “Could you perhaps rig something to monitor my mind and my powers while I sleep?”

“I suppose I could, but not by tonight. I’ll have it finished by tomorrow at noon.” And with that, Milly gets up and heads to her observatory.

The meal is at its end anyway, and this is probably the longest Milly’s been at the table so far anyway.

You decide to take things easy for a bit and work on the R&R room some more. Katherine and Nathan quickly get into an argument again and don’t really do much practically. You and Liam get a lot of work done, and Blake never seems to run out of supplies for the room.

>50% efficiency but easy room: Regular progress rate.
>Katherine, Nathan failed.
>Liam 90+ and Blake success: 15%
>You 90+: 10%
>Progress: 25%
>Room total progress: 45%

Eventually, you grow pretty tired, not only from the work but from keeping Katherine and Nathan placated. You honestly wouldn’t have thought getting a room to be an R&R room would require mediating on a comic-book debate. You honestly don’t care if the X-men are better than spider-dudedette or something or other, but apparently Nathan and Katherine do.

You head to bed, donating the last of your psychic energy to Wooster.

“Say, Wooster?”

“Yes sir?”

“Since your a psychic entity of some kind, can you see or feel my dreams? Or sense whether or not something is happening with my powers?”

“I can sir, but not without your explicit permission. Would you like me to?”

well, you already asked Milly to make something for it, so sure. You give him the permission and go to sleep.

>And that’s where I’ll be ending it for tonight. I’ll be busy during the weekend, but I’ll try to get in a thread on Saturday or Sunday. If not, expect one on Tuesday.

Thanks for running, Supervisor. Typos don't bother me, if it matters, it's more the grammatical structure of the correct sentence/paragraph.
