You decide to go check up on Alek. You don't want to say that you were worried... but you were worried! You had taken a liking to the guy the moment you met him back in Poland, and you had to admit that he knew how to shoot.

You also knew that hew as a bit headstrong and pretty damn patriotic for his mother country, even if (or maybe especially because) he was born in a technically occupied portion of it. Well, you'd have to be in order to join up with a resistance unit. However, you thought that he'd return to whatever he was doing after Poland was liberated, and were genuinely surprised when you ran into him again at Torun, where he had joined up with the newly reformed Polish Army.

Minsk was his first major action, and you weren't certain if the idiot had gotten himself wounded or killed. A quick check with the officers in charge of tracking personnel leads you to the camp's aid station, much to your dismay. They didn't know his exact injuries, but what you could take comfort in was that it wasn't serious enough to get him evacuated farther back behind the line. You quickly make your way to the aid station, where you see wounded, both German and Polish, resting. There were also soldiers from the enemy side being treated here, though they were wisely cordoned off in a separate area guarded heavily by MPs, not only to keep the prisoners from escaping, but to protect the prisoners themselves. There were still quite a number of Germans and Polish that didn't quite forgive the Russians for invading their homes.

You also draw a lot of stares as you make your way though the station. It wasn't often that a witch who wasn't a healwitch would come in. After all, witches were often given priority medical treatment. You ignore the stares and head straight to Alek's bed.

Unfortunately, all you see is an empty cot.

"Oh, in that case, I'll leave it up to you, then." The nurse nods. You suspect that she's eager for an excuse not to have to file paperwork. Lord knows, she's got enough to worry about already.

Well, you've bought some time, but you're guessing you only have 24, maybe 48 hours tops until somebody notices Alek was gone. You had to find him fast, since you knew from experience that the soldiers that went AWOL, even for reasonable justifications, were not treated well by the brass.

With that in mind, you put your honed hunting sense to use. Since you considered this an emergency situation, you also decided to summon your familiar, your dog ears and tail manifesting. You almost immediately pick up his familiar scent, even in this camp packed with thousands of men and vehicles and start following it. Eventually, you're brought to a motorpool at one of the quieter parts of the camp. No combat vehicles here or anything, just logistics vehicles like trucks, jeeps, and a few civilian vehicles.

What could Alek be doing here?

Your enhanced hearing then catches something. Boots crunching against dirt, and the loud metallic THUMP of heavy gear being tossed in the back of a truck. You poke your head around a parked jeep to see Alek, all alone, tossing his pack in the back of a civilian pickup truck. Apparently he was making preparations to leave.

You then dash back to Hess's tent. Nobody in the camp bats an eye at you, considering you're a witch and they'd prefer not to get themselves involved in witch business. You quickly reach the command tent, where Hess, of course, is brooding over maps and reports. Again, it looked like she hadn't gotten much sleep. It was starting to get a little worrying.

"Elsa?" Hess looks up, rubbing her eyes to hide the fact they were tired. "What brings you here so early?"

"I'm requesting to go on a sudden recon mission!" You say.

"Uh huh." Hess narrows her eyes, already understanding your little code. "And how long is this mission going to be?"

"Maybe two or three days."

"Mhm. Bringing anybody else along?"

"Erm, Alek. It was actually kinda his idea." You explain.

"For what reason?" Hessler asks suspiciously.

"For our honeymoon, of course!" You reply snidely.

THAT causes Hess to recoil in surprise and her jaw just hangs open for several seconds before she manages to regain her composure. Mission accomplished.

"A-A WHAT?!" She gasps, her face reddening.

"Ah, I'm just messing' with ya!" You laugh. "Alek just wanted to go check up on his home. See if it survived the war or anything. I figured I might tag along to keep an eye on him."

"I see..." Hess sighs and glances at her map. "You're lucky Minsk has officially been declared seized today. I suppose I can grant a bit of a reprieve for you and your 'friend'."

"Aw, thanks, Hess!" You hug your best friend tight. "I'm gonna feed you SO MANY marshmallows when we get back!"

"Y-you'd better go before I change my mind!" Hessler harumphs.

With that piece of business taken care of, you rather proudly waltz over to the armory, where you check out your Wiesel strikers as well as your XM-109 rifle and a G11 for closer ranges. You grab some extra supplies and then head back to the motor pool where Alek is still patiently waiting.

"So are we ready?" Alek asks.

"Yep yep!" You say cheerfully as you throw your pack into the back of the truck.

"So, uh, are you gonna ride shotgun or are you just going to tag along in the strikers?" Alek asks.

Hm, riding along with Alek had its perks. In addition with being able to tease him, it would also save on your magic usage as well as the wear on your strikers. Then again, Belarus wasn't fully secured, and there was still the possibility of rogue Russian units prowling around. Staying in your strikers would mean being able to react much quicker.

The two of you then pull out of the motor pool and take one of the main roads leading north. The gate guards do nothing to stop you. Witch privilege, after all. Plus you suspect Hess had already contact them ahead of time. The same things repeats itself for the line of checkpoints you pass, until you reach the outermost one.

"Are you sure you want to proceed any farther, Hauptmann?" The checkpoint guard asks. "The land past this checkpoint is considered enemy territory. There are still reports of Russian units operating in the area."

"Don't worry, we'll be fine." You assure him. "Just let us through."

"Jawohl." The guard salutes and motions for his fellows to clear the road. "Be careful out there!"

"Thanks!" You return the salute and follow Alek's truck out. Once you're sure the checkpoint is out of earshot, you pick up speed and turn on your radio.

"So, where exactly are we going?" You ask. "Don't want to be venturing too far out there with just us two."

"Don't worry, it's not far." Alek says. "I used to live on a farm about half a day's drive from here. If we stay on the road, we can get there in a few hours."

"Yeah... about that..." Your eyes wander to the burnt remains of a knocked out Leopard 1 pushed to the side of road. From the looks of it, the damage was fresh, and recovery crews simply hadn't come out to salvage it yet.

Ok, so an AFV, or Armored Fighting Vehicle, is any Wheeled, tracked, whatever land vehicle for fightan.

An IFV, or Infantry Fighting Vehicle is something like a Bradley, or a BMP-2, where the main weapons are decently beefy and are to help the infantry and fight on the move, and serve as fire support, but mainly carry infantry.

Tonks are proper, huge, combat vehicles, made to take on other tonks and all other land vehicles. Often nowadays have like a 105mm gun or so.

APCs, or Armored Personnel Carriers are just for carting infantry around faster than making them walk, but aren't as up-armroed or upgunned to do the fighting with the infantry.

Basically, the biggest difference between an IFV and a proper Tonk is that Tonks don't carry people seperately, just the crew. IFVs do.

The two of you continue on through the forest, your strikers humming softly as they drive you on. Of course, going through the forest takes much longer than you intended. Once the the sun begins to set, Alek speaks up.

"All right, stop, we're here!" He says a bit excitedly as he leaps out of your arms. "Our farm should be right on the other side of these tree- NO!"

You drive forward to see what looks to be a barn and a small farmhouse completely ablaze.

"Wait!" You yell as you grab Alek and hold him back. He can't hope to break free from your grip, with your superior strength.

"But I have to-"

"THINK, Alek!" You snap. "That fire is freshly set! That means whoever started it can't be far off. Hell, the might even be waiting for idiots like us to run in!"

"But-"

"Just WAIT and let me do my job!" You snap.

You carefully scan the surrounding fields. The light and smoke from the fires hampers your senses, but doesn't completely nullify them. Using your sniper scope, you search the trees and any other possible cover. However, you don't see anything out of the ordinary. Whoever set the fire was long gone.

"All right, we're clear!" You say. "But, I don't know what we can do..."

"There's one place I'm sure they haven't looked!" Alek said as he rushes off. You put your strikers in reverse as you follow him, scanning the treeline with your XM-109 as you go.

"Where we headed?" You ask.

"There's an old well out in the fields." Alek pants. "Dried up decades ago, but used to use it as an emergency storage and shelter. Hid away a lot of supplies to keep them away from the collectors. Maybe..."

You finally reach a small, well hidden trapdoor in the middle of the field. Alek quickly sweeps away a thin layer of dirt and reaches for the latch...

"Wait, let me go first." You say, pushing Alek back lightly. "Just in case."

"R-right." Alek nods and steps back.

You kneel down and pull the trap door open, making sure to keep your shield up. You're glad you did, because the moment you open the door you see the flash of a rifle and catch a rifle round bouncing off your shield.

"Whoa, whoa, hold fire!" You yelp. "Friendlies here!"

"You... you are American?" You hear a fearful voice in the darkness.

"Well, German, actually." You say as you point your flashlight down the hole. You see a fairly middle aged woman, very tired and dirty looking and hefting an old Mosin Nagant rifle.

"Mom!" Alek yells as he literally leaps into the hole and hugs the woman.

"A-Alek?!" Alek's mother gasps in surprise. "What are you doing here?!"

"I came to look for you, of course!" He says happily.

"And this witch?"

"Eerrrr, a friend." Alek says sheepishly. "What are you doing down here?"

"Hiding these little ones from the Russians." Alek's mother sighs and motions to the side. You and Alek turn to see six young girls huddling in the corner.

"Who are these girls?" You ask.

"Young witches from the Minsk hold." Alek's mother explains. "I am acquainted with the matron. When your invasion started, she felt it would be safer to hide away the younger witches in the countryside to keep them safe. Unfortunately, it looks like she was mistaken."

"Mom, where's Dad?" Alek asks, looking around.

"Those damn Russians!" His mother sobs. "I thought they were bandits before, but with their lines in shambles they are even worse!"

"Please calm down." You say soothingly. "Can you tell us what happened?"

"A group of Russians came to our farm a few hours ago." Alek's mother sniffs. "They weren't the regular foot soldiers we had to put up with. They were much more organized and better equipped. They knew about the young ones, or at least that they were smuggled out into this area. We hid in here in the old well but..."

"Mom, what happened to Dad?" Alek says desperately.

"He went out to distract them!" His mother sobs. "He told them there was nothing left here for them to take, so they took him away!"

"You can track them, right?" Alek looks at you desperation. "Please, they can't be far!"

"I... I don't know." You stammer. "These guys sound like Spetsnaz or GRU, and if that's case.... I hate to say it, but your Dad's probably already dead. Plus, they might come back and do a more thorough search. We need to get these witches out of here."

"You're going to abandon my Dad?!" Alek cries.

"I'm not saying that but..." You sigh. "Look, he sacrificed himself to make sure these kids were safe. The least we can do is make sure they STAY safe..."

"We can do it, Elsa. You know we can." Alek says.
