All right, time for the second half or our Best German interlude! Apologies for not being to run this on Sunday as planned!

You are ELSA, a young German panzer witch looking to wail on some Russians!

Your eyes slowly creak open as the morning sunlight filters though the trees. However, that wasn't what woke you up. More specifically, what woke you up was the noise, or more specifically, the lack of it.

No gunfire, no artillery shells falling, no explosions. It was... QUIET.

Kind of a pity, you think.

However, just a little distance away at the main camp, you could hear all of the regular activity going on. Vehicles moving back and forth, and troops either being marched in or evacced out. Just a huge buzz of activity in general.

Hmmmm, what should you do. Normally, you would go to talk to Hessler to determine your duties for the day, but then again, it's been quite a while since you've seen, much less heard from your "friend" Alek. Actually, you haven't heard a thing from him ever since you started the Belarus campaign. In all honesty, you were getting kind of worried...

You decide to go check up on Alek. You don't want to say that you were worried... but you were worried! You had taken a liking to the guy the moment you met him back in Poland, and you had to admit that he knew how to shoot.

You also knew that hew as a bit headstrong and pretty damn patriotic for his mother country, even if (or maybe especially because) he was born in a technically occupied portion of it. Well, you'd have to be in order to join up with a resistance unit. However, you thought that he'd return to whatever he was doing after Poland was liberated, and were genuinely surprised when you ran into him again at Torun, where he had joined up with the newly reformed Polish Army.

Minsk was his first major action, and you weren't certain if the idiot had gotten himself wounded or killed. A quick check with the officers in charge of tracking personnel leads you to the camp's aid station, much to your dismay. They didn't know his exact injuries, but what you could take comfort in was that it wasn't serious enough to get him evacuated farther back behind the line. You quickly make your way to the aid station, where you see wounded, both German and Polish, resting. There were also soldiers from the enemy side being treated here, though they were wisely cordoned off in a separate area guarded heavily by MPs, not only to keep the prisoners from escaping, but to protect the prisoners themselves. There were still quite a number of Germans and Polish that didn't quite forgive the Russians for invading their homes.

You also draw a lot of stares as you make your way though the station. It wasn't often that a witch who wasn't a healwitch would come in. After all, witches were often given priority medical treatment. You ignore the stares and head straight to Alek's bed.

Unfortunately, all you see is an empty cot.

"Ah, excuse me," You call over a nurse as you try to suppress the panic bubbling up in your chest, "what happened to the patient here?"

"Oh, he said he was going out for a walk earlier this morning." The nurse frowns. "If he hasn't come back yet, I'll have to report it."

"Ha ha!" You force out a lighthearted laugh. "Don't worry, the idiot probably got himself lost or something! Don't worry, I'll bring him back!"

"Oh, in that case, I'll leave it up to you, then." The nurse nods. You suspect that she's eager for an excuse not to have to file paperwork. Lord knows, she's got enough to worry about already.

Well, you've bought some time, but you're guessing you only have 24, maybe 48 hours tops until somebody notices Alek was gone. You had to find him fast, since you knew from experience that the soldiers that went AWOL, even for reasonable justifications, were not treated well by the brass.

With that in mind, you put your honed hunting sense to use. Since you considered this an emergency situation, you also decided to summon your familiar, your dog ears and tail manifesting. You almost immediately pick up his familiar scent, even in this camp packed with thousands of men and vehicles and start following it. Eventually, you're brought to a motorpool at one of the quieter parts of the camp. No combat vehicles here or anything, just logistics vehicles like trucks, jeeps, and a few civilian vehicles.

What could Alek be doing here?

Your enhanced hearing then catches something. Boots crunching against dirt, and the loud metallic THUMP of heavy gear being tossed in the back of a truck. You poke your head around a parked jeep to see Alek, all alone, tossing his pack in the back of a civilian pickup truck. Apparently he was making preparations to leave.

"What, you thought you could just pack up and leave and NOT TELL ME!" You grumble as you stomp up and punch Alek in the shoulder. "That's pretty damn rude, you know!"

"I'm sorry, Elsa!" Alek croaks. "I just didn't want you to get in trouble-"

"Bull. Fucking. SHIT. I INVENTED THE WORD TROUBLE." You point your thumb at your chest to emphasize your point. "Now how about you tell me what in the hell you're doing?"

"Damn." Alek sighs. "I just... well... I just wanted to see my home again, you know? I haven't been there in years and with the war and everything..."

"Aw shit." You sigh, your anger instantly receding. "Now you just go and me look like the bad guy."

"I mean, I know my superiors wouldn't approve it so I thought I'd be able to duck away for a day or two-"

"Got room for one more?" You ask.

"W-what?" Alek blinks.

"Do. You. Have. Room. For. One. More?" You spell out. "Jeez, is it that hard to understand?"

"You're not angry I'm essentially going AWOL?"

"Angry? Pffffft, I do it all the time!" You laugh. "Well, they're technically 'recon missions', but nobody asks questions. Plus, I'm sure you could use a witch to watch your back out there!"

"But what about Hessler?" Alek asks. "Wouldn't she be mad?"

"Eh, she knows what I usually get up to." You shrug. "No big deal."

"Yeah, I suppose I should run it past her." You nod, and then prod a finger at Alek's chest. "YOU do not go anywhere without me, got it? If you do, I WILL FIND YOU."

"Noted." Alek gulps.

You then dash back to Hess's tent. Nobody in the camp bats an eye at you, considering you're a witch and they'd prefer not to get themselves involved in witch business. You quickly reach the command tent, where Hess, of course, is brooding over maps and reports. Again, it looked like she hadn't gotten much sleep. It was starting to get a little worrying.

"Elsa?" Hess looks up, rubbing her eyes to hide the fact they were tired. "What brings you here so early?"

"I'm requesting to go on a sudden recon mission!" You say.

"Uh huh." Hess narrows her eyes, already understanding your little code. "And how long is this mission going to be?"

"Maybe two or three days."

"Mhm. Bringing anybody else along?"

"Erm, Alek. It was actually kinda his idea." You explain.

"For what reason?" Hessler asks suspiciously.

"For our honeymoon, of course!" You reply snidely.

THAT causes Hess to recoil in surprise and her jaw just hangs open for several seconds before she manages to regain her composure. Mission accomplished.

"A-A WHAT?!" She gasps, her face reddening.

"Ah, I'm just messing' with ya!" You laugh. "Alek just wanted to go check up on his home. See if it survived the war or anything. I figured I might tag along to keep an eye on him."

"I see..." Hess sighs and glances at her map. "You're lucky Minsk has officially been declared seized today. I suppose I can grant a bit of a reprieve for you and your 'friend'."

"Aw, thanks, Hess!" You hug your best friend tight. "I'm gonna feed you SO MANY marshmallows when we get back!"

"Y-you'd better go before I change my mind!" Hessler harumphs.

>Sure thing. See you later!

Actually the Type-61 Tank was actually more or less effective against the Zakus and was the backbone of the EFGF during the One Year War.

One of the main reasons people think it did poorly was mostly due to poor tactics against Mobile Suits at the time and the fact the show wanted to present the Mobile Suits being the treat not the mook machines.

"You know what?" You grin evilly. "I think this matter is important enough to bring our XO in."

"Wait, no-" Hess stutters as you draw a big breath in.

"HEY, HELENE!" You bellow.

"Yes?" Hess' XO pokes her head through the tent's entrance flaps almost instantaneously, as if she were waiting patiently outside the entire time.

"I think it's about time for the Colonel to take a little vacation, especially after all the hard work she put into taking Minsk, right?" You say sweetly. "She looks AWFULLY exhausted..."

"Hmmmm, I think you might be right." Helene nods. "I'll clear it with General Rommel."

"D-don't I have a say in this?" Hess asks.

"NO." Both you and Helene grunt.

With that piece of business taken care of, you rather proudly waltz over to the armory, where you check out your Wiesel strikers as well as your XM-109 rifle and a G11 for closer ranges. You grab some extra supplies and then head back to the motor pool where Alek is still patiently waiting.

"So are we ready?" Alek asks.

"Yep yep!" You say cheerfully as you throw your pack into the back of the truck.

"So, uh, are you gonna ride shotgun or are you just going to tag along in the strikers?" Alek asks.

Hm, riding along with Alek had its perks. In addition with being able to tease him, it would also save on your magic usage as well as the wear on your strikers. Then again, Belarus wasn't fully secured, and there was still the possibility of rogue Russian units prowling around. Staying in your strikers would mean being able to react much quicker.

"Nah, I'm just going to stick with my strikers." You declare. "Can't hurt to be prepared."

"That's true." Alek nods. "All right, just stick close, then."

The two of you then pull out of the motor pool and take one of the main roads leading north. The gate guards do nothing to stop you. Witch privilege, after all. Plus you suspect Hess had already contact them ahead of time. The same things repeats itself for the line of checkpoints you pass, until you reach the outermost one.

"Are you sure you want to proceed any farther, Hauptmann?" The checkpoint guard asks. "The land past this checkpoint is considered enemy territory. There are still reports of Russian units operating in the area."

"Don't worry, we'll be fine." You assure him. "Just let us through."

"Jawohl." The guard salutes and motions for his fellows to clear the road. "Be careful out there!"

"Thanks!" You return the salute and follow Alek's truck out. Once you're sure the checkpoint is out of earshot, you pick up speed and turn on your radio.

"So, where exactly are we going?" You ask. "Don't want to be venturing too far out there with just us two."

"Don't worry, it's not far." Alek says. "I used to live on a farm about half a day's drive from here. If we stay on the road, we can get there in a few hours."

"Yeah... about that..." Your eyes wander to the burnt remains of a knocked out Leopard 1 pushed to the side of road. From the looks of it, the damage was fresh, and recovery crews simply hadn't come out to salvage it yet.

Why wouldn't she, also nowhere was it said that getting Helene to help out would mean Hess wouldn't come with us, otherwise I would have voted to convince her ourself and not bother asking Helene.

>One option says 'have her come with you'

Well technically Tribal Carry won the vote but it's all semantics, we went through that to get Hess to come with us on a vacation, not to just leave her back at base and run off without her, fuck thats why we went and found her, to take us along with Alek so I'm confused as to what happened. Hopefully Merc can clarify and fix this when he gets back because what the hell, thats what that entire vote was in support of, all the options for it were to get Hess with us.
>>
>>39184503
Anon, they mean the same fucking thing, to get her to leave the base and come with us, one simply uses Helene to help instead of us alone.

If getting Helene to take her elsewhere is entirely separate then it should have been much clearer.

But that's a moot point anyway seeing as tribal carry won by 2 votes.
>>
>>39184503
The intent of both options was to bring her with us, that's the entire point of why we went to her anon, why would Merc suddenly twist that around? That's not what I voted for, I took it to mean that Helene would help us convince Hess to come with us and so did other anons.
>>
>>39184503
They both read as different flavors of the same end result anon, like the others have said, I thought we were bringing Hessler with us and tribal carry won the vote, if Merc was not willing to use that then he should have made it clear and help a revote, and he should have made it clearer what asking Helene to help would bring as the way its written, it reads like the first option, just a different flavor. Also why would we go through all that and not want her to tag along? That was the reason why we went to tell her we would be gone a few days, to bring her too.

>>39183522
What the hell Merc?
>>
>>39184577
>>39184656
I read it as a general "you need to loosen up too!", not specifically "by coming with us". Hence why the next option was between "by coming with us" or "just however"

I read it as a general "you need to loosen up too so you're coming with me!" and the different between the wording is so minor that they are the same thing when we went there to bring her with us. But like >>39184520 said, tribal carrying her out of there and bringing her with us won and it makes no sense to twist the intent of that vote when we went there specifically to drag her along with us, which for some reason we're now not doing?
>>
>>39184772
Good question, also yes it is.
>>
>>39184776
The last 3 to 4 votes were probably out of the voting time.
>>
>>39184861
Even then anon, going by timestamps, tribal carry won by at least 1 vote but thats once again a moot point as they all were votes to bring Hessler along with us.

ITT: People who grossly misread the presented options.

Hess was never stated to be joining us, implicitly or otherwise.
>>
>>39184963
Anon it was implicitly stated through that option seeing as our course of action was to bring her with us, it was merely a different method of getting her to come with us and once again that doesn't matter as that option did not actually win the vote yet somehow Merc chose it and did a complete 180 on its intent and course of action without telling us.
>>
>>39184776
The only ones who've "twisted" the "intent of the vote" here are those who somehow thought that anything in the presented options implied that Hessler was joining us on the bootyfarm run.
>>
>>39184963
Not really grossly misread at all as it can very easily and was construed as simply getting Helene to help convince Hessler to join us.

>>39185008
All three options where in the pursuit of dragging her along anon.
>>
>>39185004
>it was implicitly stated through that option
No, no it wasn't. It never was. That's just your magical realm talking.
>>
>>39185037
Anon, seeing as you seem to be the only one who interpreted it as such and everyone else interpreted it as merely another way to get Hess to come along on our ride maybe then it was and you just didn't see it. Also go fuck yourself with your magical realm shit, Hess is in a bad place after these latest big battles and we need to keep an eye on her and let her know we're here for her, god knows no one is setup to specifically deal with PTSD this early in the setting.
>>
>>39185033
There is absolutely *nothing* in "
>Talk to Helene to get Hess out on leave." that implies she's coming along with us. Only the other option explicitly states that.

>>39185093
No, you're pretty clearly the only delusional one here, since there's plenty of plain votes for the not-coming-along option that completely understood the intent.

Screaming "muh PTSD, muh healing" doesn't get you a get-out-of-logic-free card.

>>39184954

>>39185136
>There is absolutely *nothing* in "

Anon, it is entirely implied in that, that was why we were there, thats why we asked, why would we then suddenly not want to bring her after going there to ask her to come along and asking her to come along?

>>39185166

>>
>>39185193
>Anon, it is entirely implied in that, that was why we were there, thats why we asked, why would we then suddenly not want to bring her after going there to ask her to come along and asking her to come along?
Except we weren't there to ask her to come, just to notify here we were taking a couple of days off. Only the
>Convince Hess to come with you.
option explicitly states that Hess would join us if it worked. Nothing was implicit, you just assumed.
>>
>>39185166
>since there's plenty of plain votes for the not-coming-along option that completely understood the intent.
Well actually there were 2 votes in time for that option, and one late one that wasn't counted, and tribal carry was leading by 1 before you factor in the cutoff for when Merc starts writing.

>>39185227
What else do you expect? Merc dropped the ball on what anons voted for and invalidated half a threads worth of actions for no goddamned reason.
>>
>>39185193
>So you magically know the thought process of an anon who votes without and discussion? Evidently not.
I could say exactly the same thing about you.

>Anon, it is entirely implied in that, that was why we were there, thats why we asked, why would we then suddenly not want to bring her after going there to ask her to come along and asking her to come along?
Except Elsa *never* explicitly went there to ask her to come. Elsa went there to let her know that she was buggering off with her boytoy on "recon". None of of the options subsequently chosen involved "come with me".

>Oh so just because I didn't post any reasoning with my vote and just copy pasted it makes my reasoning invalid now?
No, but it means you've got zero ground to stand on later when it comes to an argument over intent.
>>
>>39185268
>Except we weren't there to ask her to come
I was and others were, don't "we" anon, you don't speak for the rest of us.

> Nothing was implicit
Right, so you can't read and comprehend then, good to know.
>>

Neither do you, and I'd thank you to stop painting the rest of us with your stupidity.
>>
>>39185290
>I could say exactly the same thing about you.
No you couldn't, I don't assume anything about your votes, only what others have said is their reasoning and intent behind their votes when they've posted such.

>None of of the options subsequently chosen involved "come with me".
The option chosen was to forcefully drag her along.

>No, but it means you've got zero ground to stand on later when it comes to an argument over intent.
I can only and have only ever been able to speak about the intent of my own vote, and any others that have made their intent clear in their posting, whereas you've been making assumptions left and right.

>>39185321
Well seeing as there are at least 2 anons beside me who think the same, then no anon, we didn't misinterpret anything, if anything Merc misinterpreted what he wrote and even then we should have carried her out of there.

All right, finally back!

And to explain the earlier choice, it was all due to bad timing. I decided start writing up the next post roughly 12 minutes after the last one, so I didn't see the extra votes for "tribal carry". I also kind of thought it was a joke vote, too, which is why I didn't really consider it at the time.

I mean, if you guys REALLY want Hessler to tag along I'll put up a more straightforward vote right now. It's not really too late to keep her involved, anyways!

It's really simple and built well, a pity the rest of the vehicle is so poorly designed. When we found a few the Germans brought with them to Kandahar we took the chassis off them and used them as carts and stuff around base, pretty fun to race them too.
>>
>>39186458
It's mostly that since it's not trying to move a 60+ton tank, it's naturally under far less stress and is harder to break when built to milspec standards.

>>
>>39186862
AFV = armoured fighting vehicle
>>
>>39186862
protection and purpose, a good MBT can tank hits from its own guns, a AFV can't even hope to do that

AFVs are much lighter and more tactical than MBTs, they work well with infantry when your not fighting a conventional war
>>
AFVs are designed to move and die faster in urban environments.
>>
>>39186886
I understand that but some I remember some show, I think it was mail call showcasing AFVs but some of them just looked like tanks to me, or rather light tanks but that is not their designation despite doing more or less the same thing light tanks did back in the day.

AFV's just a blanket term, like 'ships' or 'planes'.

Ok, so an AFV, or Armored Fighting Vehicle, is any Wheeled, tracked, whatever land vehicle for fightan.

An IFV, or Infantry Fighting Vehicle is something like a Bradley, or a BMP-2, where the main weapons are decently beefy and are to help the infantry and fight on the move, and serve as fire support, but mainly carry infantry.

Tonks are proper, huge, combat vehicles, made to take on other tonks and all other land vehicles. Often nowadays have like a 105mm gun or so.

APCs, or Armored Personnel Carriers are just for carting infantry around faster than making them walk, but aren't as up-armroed or upgunned to do the fighting with the infantry.

Generally the difference is in Armour and firepower. Most IFVs have an autocannon and some kind of ATGM, and tend to have fairly light armour.

Proper tanks have a very large, very heavy main cannon and are designed to take hits like crazy.

If you try to use an IFV like a tank you're in for a world of hurt.

>If you try to use an IFV like a tank you're in for a world of hurt.
And then you have weird edge cases like the Jews using their Merkava tanks as IFVs.

"You know, now that you mention it, you never talk about your own family that much." You muse as you note the terrain is getting much rougher. The poorly paved road gives way to a dirt one, and once you reach the forest proper the road practically disappears and turns into more of a rocky trail winding through the trees.

"Well, what is there to tell?" Alek sighs. "Just the only son to a poor family of farmers trying to eke out a living in the middle of nowhere."

"Oh come on, there has to be more to it than that." You roll your eyes. "Everybody's got a story. Like, how did you learn to shoot so well?"

"Oh, that? Well, we lived on state-owned land, so we couldn't even keep the crops we planted. So, I picked up my grandpa's old Martian War rifle and went out to hunt to put some more food on the table. I was pretty damn bad at it at first, but you learn to get good fast on an empty stomach."

"Ha, I can imagine." You chuckle. "How did you get over to Poland?"

"Well, my parents thought the farming life wasn't for me. We had a few distant relatives in Warsaw who told us about all the opportunities there, so... they got into contact with one of the many underground groups that specialized in smuggling people across the border. Lived in Warsaw for a few years, and kept in fairly regular contact with my parents. Of course, when the Russians invaded, the the lines of communication were cut. I hadn't heard a thing from them since."

"I see." You nod. "And your parents? What were they like?"

"Heh, Dad was a soldier for the post-Martian War forces. Spent a couple years guarding the Martian POW camps while the politicians hammered out a peace agreement. Told me he never liked the slimy bastards.'Way too many noodly appendages.' he'd say!"

The both of you laugh for a bit before he continues.

Depends. (Desert Storm)

But yeah. With a handful of exceptions (Stryker MGS, BMP-3, BMP-4) most IFVs will have a 20-30mm autocannon, ATGM, and lots of armor (Compared to the APCs of old).

Basically, the biggest difference between an IFV and a proper Tonk is that Tonks don't carry people seperately, just the crew. IFVs do.

The reason that some IFVs look like tanks, are because a few, like the BTR-T and the MGS, have characteristics of such; the BTR-T has the chassis of a T-55, and the MGS has a similar gun to an Abrams.

"Mom started off as nurse, caring for all the wounded from the war. She met Dad at one of the POW camps and they hit it off. Unfortunately, that's when Russia decided to keep the parts of Poland they stole, and they had the bad luck of being on the wrong side of the border. Dad quit the army and became a farmer, and Mom followed him. The rest is kinda history from there."

"I see." You nod. "So no siblings?"

"Mom and Dad tried, but... well... times were tough." Alek says cryptically, as not wanting to say anything more.

He didn't have to.

There would have been a awkward silence if it was suddenly broken up by a loud BANG. At first you think it's an explosion and you immediately draw your G11, quickly swinging around looking for threats.

"Alek!" You yelp.

"It's okay, it's okay!" Alek yells. "Just a blown out tower!"

"Oh of all the fucking luck." You grumble. You look up to see the sun already getting pretty low in the sky. "Can you fix it?"

"It's a simple fix. It'll take some time, though." Alek sighs as he gets out of the cab and slams the door closed.

"Wait a minute!" Your familiar's ear twitches as it picks up sounds. Footsteps. Muffled voices. "Someone's coming!"

"What?" Alek's voice drops to whisper. "Who? How many?"

"Don't know. Don't know. At least a dozen maybe." You mutter. "Maybe about a hundred meters away. They definitely heard the blowout."

Could be anybody really. Refugees hiding out here, partisans, or if you were really unlucky, Russians.

Not really, it was a Belgian attempt to design something similar in house as part of their procurement requirements, in the end they didn't opt to put it into military trials against the G11 as they worked out a deal with H&K if the project went ahead with the BW and NATO reimbursing it.

"Alek, grab whatever you can carry, and grab the truck's fuses too, we're getting out here!" You hiss. You can remember the smell of gunpowder and the taste of machine oil anywhere. "Whoever is coming, they armed and they got numbers!"

"R-right!" Alek quickly digs into the truck's innards and pulls the fuses out, stuffing them into his pack. He grabs the biggest pack of supplies he can find and you do the same.

"All right, hold on!" You grunt.

"What-?" Alek starts to utter when you pick him up in a bridal carry and speed off as fast as your strikers and the terrain would allow you. "Holy shiiiiiiiiit!!!"

You keep going for another mile or two, when you're certain you've shaken off all pursuit.

"Jeez, don't scare me like that!" Alek sighs. "Now, uh, can you let me down, please? I think I can make the rest of the way on foot."

The two of you continue on through the forest, your strikers humming softly as they drive you on. Of course, going through the forest takes much longer than you intended. Once the the sun begins to set, Alek speaks up.

"All right, stop, we're here!" He says a bit excitedly as he leaps out of your arms. "Our farm should be right on the other side of these tree- NO!"

"Wait!" You yell as you grab Alek and hold him back. He can't hope to break free from your grip, with your superior strength.

"But I have to-"

"THINK, Alek!" You snap. "That fire is freshly set! That means whoever started it can't be far off. Hell, the might even be waiting for idiots like us to run in!"

"But-"

"Just WAIT and let me do my job!" You snap.

You carefully scan the surrounding fields. The light and smoke from the fires hampers your senses, but doesn't completely nullify them. Using your sniper scope, you search the trees and any other possible cover. However, you don't see anything out of the ordinary. Whoever set the fire was long gone.

"All right, we're clear!" You say. "But, I don't know what we can do..."

"There's one place I'm sure they haven't looked!" Alek said as he rushes off. You put your strikers in reverse as you follow him, scanning the treeline with your XM-109 as you go.

"Where we headed?" You ask.

"There's an old well out in the fields." Alek pants. "Dried up decades ago, but used to use it as an emergency storage and shelter. Hid away a lot of supplies to keep them away from the collectors. Maybe..."

You finally reach a small, well hidden trapdoor in the middle of the field. Alek quickly sweeps away a thin layer of dirt and reaches for the latch...

"Wait, let me go first." You say, pushing Alek back lightly. "Just in case."

"R-right." Alek nods and steps back.

You kneel down and pull the trap door open, making sure to keep your shield up. You're glad you did, because the moment you open the door you see the flash of a rifle and catch a rifle round bouncing off your shield.

"Whoa, whoa, hold fire!" You yelp. "Friendlies here!"

"You... you are American?" You hear a fearful voice in the darkness.

"Well, German, actually." You say as you point your flashlight down the hole. You see a fairly middle aged woman, very tired and dirty looking and hefting an old Mosin Nagant rifle.

"Mom!" Alek yells as he literally leaps into the hole and hugs the woman.

"A-Alek?!" Alek's mother gasps in surprise. "What are you doing here?!"

"I came to look for you, of course!" He says happily.

"And this witch?"

"Eerrrr, a friend." Alek says sheepishly. "What are you doing down here?"

"Hiding these little ones from the Russians." Alek's mother sighs and motions to the side. You and Alek turn to see six young girls huddling in the corner.

"Who are these girls?" You ask.

"Young witches from the Minsk hold." Alek's mother explains. "I am acquainted with the matron. When your invasion started, she felt it would be safer to hide away the younger witches in the countryside to keep them safe. Unfortunately, it looks like she was mistaken."

"Mom, where's Dad?" Alek asks, looking around.

"Those damn Russians!" His mother sobs. "I thought they were bandits before, but with their lines in shambles they are even worse!"

"Please calm down." You say soothingly. "Can you tell us what happened?"

"A group of Russians came to our farm a few hours ago." Alek's mother sniffs. "They weren't the regular foot soldiers we had to put up with. They were much more organized and better equipped. They knew about the young ones, or at least that they were smuggled out into this area. We hid in here in the old well but..."

"Mom, what happened to Dad?" Alek says desperately.

"He went out to distract them!" His mother sobs. "He told them there was nothing left here for them to take, so they took him away!"

"You can track them, right?" Alek looks at you desperation. "Please, they can't be far!"

"I... I don't know." You stammer. "These guys sound like Spetsnaz or GRU, and if that's case.... I hate to say it, but your Dad's probably already dead. Plus, they might come back and do a more thorough search. We need to get these witches out of here."

"You're going to abandon my Dad?!" Alek cries.

"I'm not saying that but..." You sigh. "Look, he sacrificed himself to make sure these kids were safe. The least we can do is make sure they STAY safe..."

"We can do it, Elsa. You know we can." Alek says.

"Since when have I not?" You laugh as you climb the ladder out of the well.

"Like, all the time." Alek says glumly.

"Don't worry, I'll be fine!" You assure him. The moment you get to the surface, you key your radio to HQ. Hopefully they're still in range. "Helene! Hey, Helene, can you hear me?!"

"Yes, yes I can." Helen grunts. "What happened, your little date not going as planned? Need a little womanly advice?"

"Serious time, Helene. I just came across a some witches from the Minsk hold hiding out here. They need immediate evac. They just dodged a Russian patrol but I don't think can avoid the next one."

"I see. I'll send in an extraction helicopter right away!" Helen says. "I assume at your current location?"

"Yeah." You say. "Please send it ASAP."

You the key off your radio and scan the ground carefully. By now, it was completely dark, but the fields were still illuminated by the fire. You catch a set of tracks. Footprints. Dozens of them. You speed off as fast as you can, following the tracks deeper into the forest. You begin to slow down as the tracks get fresher, and you start hearing human made noises. The crunching of boots, metal gear clinking and clacking together. Muffled voices. You inch ever closer until you see what looks to be a camp.

Yeah, of course they wouldn't try to move too much when it's dark.

You see a dozen GRU Spetsnaz troops gathered around campfire, drinking and laughing. Near the back the group, you could see a man with his arms tied and a bag over his head. No doubt Alek's father, hopefully.

Your trigger finger twitches in anticipation. From what you could tell, they didn't have any heavy weapons, nor were there any witches present. Even with your light loadout, it would be so simple to wipe them all out...

As much as you wanted to do it, you resist the urge to just open up and kill all these fucking Russians. After all, there was a risk of hitting Alek's father in the crossfire. Instead, you silently roll your way around the campsite. It seemed as if the Russians were pretty damn confident nobody would find them out here, considering they didn't even have anybody on perimeter watch. Pretty damn sloppy.

Then again, all these guys were doing were getting drunk off stolen vodka and alcohol. It's insultingly easy to get around them and close to Alek's father. You roll forward silently and pat him on the shoulder. He immediately tenses up.

"Hey, don't worry, I'm a friend." You whisper. "I'm with your son."

This causes him to relax. You slowly pull him into the trees. Nobody even notices. You then cut his ties and pull the sack off his head.

"A witch? Out here?" He gasps.

"Yeah, well, your kid has done real well for himself." You grin. "Hold on. I don't know how long it'll take for them to notice you're missing, and I don't want to stay to find out."

Alek's father nods, and then yelps when you pick him up in a bridal carry and roll off as fast as you could. As you move, you can hear helicopter rotors in the distance. That was a good sign.

The sound of angry Russians yelling behind you wasn't so good.

You put up a shield at your back as you roll to the farm at full speed, your strikers whining with the effort. The moment you break the treeline, you can see a landed Chinook in the field, masked American special forces carrying the young witches into the helo. Alek waves at you cheerfully.

"GET IN!" You bellow. "GET THE FUCK IIIIIIIINNNNNNN!"

No sooner than you yell that when the Chinook's door gunner opens fire, unleashing a torrent of minigun fire into the treeline, signifying that it was time to go. You all pile into the Chinook and it slowly pulls itself into the air as the sound of bullets and small arms ding off the armor, but soon enough, the Chinook is free and clear.

"Ha! That was an exciting day off, eh?" You laugh as you nudge Alek in the shoulder.

"Alek, who is this girl?" Alek's father breathes as a medic takes a look at him.

"Ummm, well," Alek shuffles nervously. "She's a fri-"

"I'm his girlfriend!" You say cheerfully as you nuzzle your cheek against Alek's.

"EEEEHHHHHHHHH?" Alek's parents eyes widen. You see the witch girls look on with interest, as well. "Alek, is that true?!"

"Um, well, I guess." Alek nods, his face redder than a traffic light.

"Ah, well, as long as we're in full disclosure here.." Alek's mom bites her lip and holds one of the witch girls close. "Alek, this is your little sister, Kyla."

"EEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHH!?" Both you and Alek gasp.

Meanwhile the American special forces crew just shake their heads and try to look away.
