You knew Noel needed help training, but this was plain ridiculous.
Or it could just be that this monster has nothing to do with the impossibly-bad recipe Noel just put together.
Either way, it looks angry and just plain weird.

Character sheet here: http://pastebin.com/KcG8QSZX
You're standing in front of a cabinet where you just took out a notebook, because you were trying to point out that you saw someone else in the room.

Good news is that you don't have to do that anymore- because your tongue has decided to work again.
Bad news is that the thing you saw skirting around the corners of the room has decided to attack you head-on, and you're not entirely sure what the hell it is.
Weird shapes bubble out of a malleable, black blob, which seems to be able to hold itself together through mechanisms you're not sure if you want to know.

This blank white mask stares down at you, screaming, "AZURE! AZURE!"
Noel is whimpering and cowering away form the monstrosity, and you're not surprised. It's taking all of your willpower not to cut and run- this thing's stench smells of dying insects and rotting flesh.
With a devious, inhuman cackle, it extends its pseudo-arms to drop down on you.
No time to think- what do you do?

You decide to fuck this shit and run.
The thing hisses as you summon a wave of thunderous force to shove it back, but rolls back into form in an instant.
"Noel we need to go!" You grab her hand and start running.
However this thing is right the fuck behind you, and it doesn't seem to care about petty things like physical obstacles when it can just roll over them. This thing is gaining on you, and fast, as you turn a corner to try and find other soldiers.
Noel, having gone into a panic, starts screaming, "Help! Help!"
As you run past, a grunt notices the call and walks into the hallway you're running down. When she sees what's chasing you, she nearly drops her spear in shock before sprinting off away from the blob like you are.
Soon enough, a small group of soldiers has assembled together at the sound of the commotion. They're carrying spears, and motion for you and Noel to stand behind them as they put up a wall of weapons.
"What the hell is that thing? We need Major Kisaragi, NOW!'
A subordinate shakes his head. "Sir, he's hurt! We can't afford to-"
"I said NOW!"

You let go of of Noel's hand and cry out to the leaving messenger. "No, don't get Major Kisaragi! We can fight this together!"
You turn back to Noel. "Noel, summon Bolverk!"
She nods and summons her twin pistols.
Moving towards the commander, you try not to take your eyes off of the monster. "I need a weapon. Who here carries firearms?"
The commander looks at you with alarm and confusion. "Are you crazy? This is a policing facility, not a war zone! None of us have the Tanegashima!"
As you talk, the monstrosity creeps ever-closer, looking for a flaw in the ranks of the NOL soldiers.
It soon finds one, in the form of a trembling spear-carrying soldier.
After deftly feinting, the horrendous beast dodges past the spearpoint and starts to subsume the recruit whole. The spear drops to the flo0or, and his screams can be heard as the others desperately try to get the blob off of him.
Noel blasts the creature, causing it to release the man and go for her instead. HSe leaps back and shoots it twice.
On impulse, you grab a weapon from one of the...

No tonfas nearby. You'll have to make do with your fists and Drive- You're not letting these soldiers fight unarmed.
"Hey, ugly. Get a load of this!"
Snapping your fingers, you create a small bolt of sound that strikes the monster.
It turns around, confused, before getting launched by a sonic wave you created by stomping your left foot as hard as you could. It flails in mid-air before slowly regaining control of its position and barreling towards you.

You use the ambient sound to create false wind, throwing the blob back and forth. The soldiers are impressed, but still wary.
Then the thing drops to the ground and rushes towards you, howling and babbling, using insect-like claws to reach for you.
"AZURE! AZURE!" It howls in animal-like fury.
> Use the air to your advantage and buffet the thing with artificial wind.
> Focus in distracting it while Noel does damage.
DOUBLE ACTION: (SUCCESS)
As you put up a shield to defend yourself, a set of shots tear into it from the side. The thing screams like a banshee and reels away- right towards some of the soldiers, who hack away at it with varying degrees of success.
It breaks off and rushes towards you again.
Now what? You definitely have the upper hand at the moment.

Weaving and ducking, the blob rushes towards, you, dodging Noel's shots.
You stand your ground, waiting for an opening.
Leaving behind a small trail of goop, it leaps onto you, spreading itself out to swallow you whole, and then-
> Shield yourself.
> Get ready to counter-attack.
> While attacking keep changing the harmonics of your strikes. Every substance has a frequency at which it will fall apart find it.
DOUBLE ACTION: (SUCCESS)
You put up a barrier the second it spreads itself out, which it falls on in its rush to attack you.
In its confusion, its surface area has expanded to a relatively high level- its a little more than a foot think at its deepest, and it's spread itself out over a huge area, intending to take you in all at once.
This was a big mistake, as you amplify the shield and push the monster back.
It starts screaming and flailing, bugs falling out of its blobby body, as it slips back and tries to recover from the pain.

You gather yourself as the blob sputters what sound like curses.
"D-_n! _ -as -_ cl-_e! D-_n y-_!"
Putting aside the fact that it's trying to communicate, this thing is too dangerous to handle in its state. Drawing in a deep breath and focusing on all the sound in the room, you draw it together into a single point and then shout at the top of your lungs.
With a mighty roar, you make the ground rumble and the monster shake in terror. Some of the lights flicker and a nearby chandelier starts to shake.
The nearby soldiers are awestruck at how much power you're putting into the attack, and some are covering their ears or bracing themselves from the sheer force.
When you're out of breath, you get back into a fighting stance and gasp, eyeing up the monster.
It's unsteady and about to collapse.
Still drawing in air, you give the signal to Noel, who blasts it with Bolverk, blowing a hole in its black, pudding-like frame.
After a few wavering attempts to continue the fight, the monster falls over and sinks into what looks like a puddle, too weak to move.
>DISTORTION FINISH!
>Congrats, you got a special prize, to be awarded at the end of the session!

As the soldiers gather around, they quickly realize that the threat has been dealt with.
Some debate can be heard over whether waste control or pest control should be called.
Noel moves up besides you.
"Wow, that was... really loud.." SHe whispers. She seemed to be a little thrown off by that last attack as well.

You shrug sheepishly at all the people holding their ears, sitting down, or the like. "...Yeah, it was. Sorry. ...I didn't hurt you, did I?"
She shakes her head with a only slightly-forced smile. "No, just a little ringing in my ears."
You hover your hand near her face, and the ringing goes away.
"Wow, that's really cool." She smiles for real this time. "You should help the others."
You look around at the lower-rankes soldiers "Right. And- uh, sorry about the cooking training being interrupted."
"Well, it's okay... it's not like the syrup was gonna be good to eat any-ways." She mutters with a little bit of grumpiness in her voice. "Just so long as you promise to train me later, right?"
"Yeah, sure." You nod, before turning to get the ringing out of other people's ears.
The commander is on the phone with someone, and puts it down after you're done fixing the ringing noise in the ears of the soldiers. The monster is contained in a clear, heavy plastic storage box.
As it passes to the holding area, you ask, "What the hell is that thing?"
The commander shakes his head. "No clue. I called Colonel Clover to come and take a look at it. He might be able to get through- he lives in Iwatsuchi, you know."

"Wait- Why is the Colonel interested in monsters like that?" You look at the simpering blob in a box. If it didn't just try to kill everything in the room, you might have felt sorry for it.
"Beats me." the commander shrugs. "All I know is that he runs all sorts of weird experiments, especially on monsters like that. I'd suggest not thinking about it too hard."
>Clover. Like Carl Clover. That kid was unhinged. And he said his sister was... There's no way.
>Did the Colonel turn a person into a Nox Nyctores?
Excusing yourself, you find Noel in the kitchen, trying to clean up.
"Noel, do you know a Colonel Clover? Is he Carl's father?"
Her eyes grow large at this. "What? Carl's father is a colonel?"
"I don't know. But he's coming from Iwatsuchi--" You draw in a deep breath. "My home."

>Some time ago:

It's raining. Of course it is. You can hear the pattering on the roof.
"You don't have to do this- you can run!" You're packing your things in a sparse room. There are children huddled outside the door as you throw the last of your meager worldly possessions into a single bag and zip it up.
"Look, I know how you feel. But we don't have enough money exclusively from donations, and I'm old enough to fight."
You pick up your standard-issue spear and adjust the new NOL uniform you've just gotten.
"Ben, please. I don't want to see you coming home in a box..." A middle-aged woman with soft blue eyes and white streaks in her blonde hair looks up at you pleadingly.
"I owe you too much to turn this down. I know how hard it is for you to budget the food, and I eat the most out of all of us." turn and face her, putting your hand on her shoulder.
She begins to cry, tears staining her apron. "Ben, please... I've heard horror stories from the war! Out of all of these children, you've been here and helped out the longest. You're like a son to me, and a brother figure these children wouldn't have without you! If you die..."
She breaks down sobbing.
"Trish... Mom... I know how you feel. But the Library is offering me more money than we've ever seen pass through this house. We need this. The family needs this."
"Just promise me you won't get yourself killed." She sniffles.
You nod, and step outside.
The children move around you as you go, looking at you with pleading eyes. One of the girls is even crying. You can't bring yourself to say anything.
The man in a commander's outfit is grim-faced and almost apologetic as the rain pours down around you and he shakes your hand. "You'll get the first check here in two weeks, and a check every week after that."
You look over his shoulder to see a rifle strapped to his back.
Little did you know it would soon be yours- by a twist in the wheel of fate.
