The half-moon hangs in the air. The night is chilly, a pleasant change from the hot and sunny days. It's the first week of autumn, but it's as if the weather doesn't realize that; as if summer hasn't yet ended.

You are about a dozen stories above the ground. Several floors below is the home of an important friend. You will be protecting her tonight. You've never been this nervous before. The enemy you'll be facing tonight may not be as strong as the others you've fought, but he'll be far more cunning, and the simplest mistake just might end up costing Ren's life.

Your brief time as a Shinigami has battered and bruised you, and you're nowhere near your best because of those injuries. Even when you were, many people died under your watch. But those were still strangers, people you've never met before, and people you'll never see again. Ren, however, is by no means a stranger. You really wish you were stronger, just so that these things weren't so uncertain.

It feels like every night of this awful week has been spent in battle, fighting for the sake of both the living and the dead, for the souls of innocents and even for the souls of the monsters that threaten all others. You risk your life for duties that are not even your own. You are not a Shinigami; you are merely the human substitute for one. You will never ripe the rewards of gratitude and recognition from neither the humans nor the Shinigami. You have largely nothing to gain from doing all of this, and yet you took on this job almost willingly, and carried it out with selfless determination.

And you'll be seeing it to the end. Only a few more of these nights remain; you can endure through them, and you will. You have to.

At your side stands a girl you've killed. She's just as tense as you, albeit much more composed. Her eyes are locked on the screen of her strange cellphone, waiting for the signal that will herald the arrival of a heartless abomination. The tense anticipation was accompanied only by silence. Perhaps Kimiko, the Shinigami you are a substitute for, trusts you enough to not question whatever plans you might have, or she knows you well enough by now to realize that you don't really have any.

Well, the plan is simple - once the Hollow approaches, you'll drop down on him and cut him in two with your sword. You're waiting for him on the roof of an apartment building, right above where he's expected to appear. In life, the Hollow in question must have been Ren's uncle, and according to Kimiko, being a relative makes the girl a prime target.

It's all on you to prevent anything from happening to her. You have all the reasons to be nervous.

The sudden noise from Kimiko's cellphone startles you. You turn to her, and she confirms it.

"He's coming."

The two of you step away from the edge of the rooftop. Kimiko shares the radar's screen with you. She points at a specific point of the green grid, giving you a brief explanation.

"Once the dot gets here, the Hollow should be in reach. If you plan on jumping down on him, this is when you should."

You nod. It takes around a minute for him to reach the designated spot. Kimiko silently nods at you when you look at her for confirmation. He's probably scraping at Ren's window with his bony hands already.

...

>Drop down from above. Try to catch him by surprise and cut him in half.

You draw your sword, the one with the icy-cold blade and the light blue hilt. With a sprint, you leap over the roof's edge, diving down like a black feathered eagle. Your sword moves, momentarily resembling the stroke of a brush. Even if your strength alone isn't enough to cut through his skull, you'll smash it to pieces with raw momentum.

The air roars in your ears under your rapid descend, and you spend a second looking at nothing but the blur of your target. You swing down with all your might, but the sword you wield cuts nothing but air. The Hollow leaped back, and the blade only barely gnawed at his flame-like cloak. The fabric isn't even torn.

You break your fall by sliding along the air, and after a rebounding hop forwards, you chase after him, nothing underneath your feet. The Hollow remains standing, or, more accurately, hovering in the air after his evasive jump. He neither approaches nor tries to escape. After your last bout, he's probably well aware that any careless action might spell the end for either side.

Your sword is once again swung at his skull, and yet he fluently dances away from its edge, making distance. You don't let him get far, and move back in as soon as he tries to escape. Relying on the advantage in reach provided by your weapon, you attack again, still aiming for his head, and again, he gracefully flies aside. You make a vertical slash, and the Hollow flies downwards in an attempt to dodge.

He should have been hit then, but your sword bites only into the stone of a lamp post. He phased through it. He must have known that it was there. You got so caught up in trying to kill him that you forgot about your surroundings; he didn't. This is such a stupid, amateur mistake. You won't let it happen again.

The Hollow doesn't use your momentary confusion for a counter; instead, he turns away and flees. The way his cloak flutters and moves as he flies away reminds you of a jellyfish. You force the strange comparisons out of your head and focus.

You chase after him, but not before he goes through the wall of a nearby apartment complex. Once you enter someone's room, you are forced to stop in your tracks.

A man is grasped by the Hollow's skeletal hands, torn out of the comforts of his bed. The man, confused and terrified, lets out pitiful yelps and uselessly flails his arms about, trying to get out. He must be aware that his life is in danger, but he must not see or hear why.

The flailing achieves nothing.

"Throw your sword out of that window, Shinigami, or I will snap this man's neck."

The monster issues a simple command. The room is small, and they are only a couple of steps away.

>Comply and throw away your sword.
>Try to cut the Hollow's hands without harming the hostage.

"Did you think to ambush me? Foolish girl! I knew you would come after me tonight," He chuckles, petting the horrified man on the head. His next words are something akin to a plea in their tone. "If you were to just walk away, I'd let you be. I merely want to wash away the foul taste of my master's flesh. I'm sure that my dear sister and her innocent daughter would suffice for that. There would be no other victims. Right now, you are forcing my hand, Shinigami. You are making me kill more than I have to, more than I wish to."

You don't believe him. Hollows can't just 'stop' doing what they do, you're sure of it. In response to his threats, you only glare. The only sounds left lingering in the room are the man's sobs and the creak of your gritted teeth.

You don't trust him at all. If you were to throw away your sword, he'd probably win. If that cloak is his weapon, and if he needs to grapple you to use it, you'll be throwing away your only means of effective defense. That's what he probably wants. So you don't move. You wait.

Another stalemate rises. After a brief pause, the Hollow clicks his tongue in annoyance.

"I'll make you regret your disobedience! You should have taken me seriously when you had the chance!" The hands that held the man in place settle on his head. You lunge forwards, but not before the unpleasant crack of broken bones resounds throughout the room.

"You son of a bitch!" You scream and shove the tip of your sword into one of the Hollow's seemingly empty eye sockets. His head tilts and the blade cuts the temple of his skull. Blood is drawn, but this isn't enough to kill him. You are forced to stay your weapon instead of proceeding with the next strike, as the hostage's unconscious soul is dragged in to act as a meatshield. The monster tries to grab the soul's chain, but you cut through the hand.

The monster tries to grab the soul's chain, but you cut through the hand with your sword. You then pull the hostage towards you, threatening to claim another hand if he tries to put up a struggle. The enemy flees, disappearing through a wall. You go after him, leaving the soul behind. You'll return later. For now, you need to make sure the heartless bastard is dead and incapable of hurting anyone else.

The chase after him is nauseating. After you move through one wall, you catch sight of his black tatters phasing through another. He drops through the floor, and he keeps using furniture in an attempt to avoid being seen. Your eyesight keeps blinking in and out as you go through solid structures. Up and down, left and right, neverending and constant shifts in perception immediately make you dizzy. But you don't let him get away, even though your head spins and makes you sick.

You keep firmly on his trail throughout his many attempts to escape. When the Hollow realizes that running away from you won't work, he tries to take up more hostages; with only one functional limb at his disposal, and the other one still only halfway through its regeneration, you prevent that from happening.

It is a good thing you kept your sword. Otherwise, you doubt you'd be able to stop him.

Eventually, he makes a mistake. He tries to grab a small child from its crib, perhaps believing that his lone arm would be enough to keep that kind of weight pinned, but perhaps his left hand isn't his dominant one, and he takes far too long to grasp the little boy. Your sword batters through the skull like a sharpened, thin club. It sends him flying aside, to the edge of the room.

(2/3)
>>
>>39110328
Rather than continue running, he tries to stop you with a gesture. He keeps crawling back as he does so, eventually bumping the back of his head against a wall.

"No, please stop! Don't kill me, I don't want to die!" He desperately and pathetically pleads. You raise your sword, certain to bring it down, if not for his next words. "I'll tell you about my master if you spare me! I'm begging you!"

The master he keeps mentioning must be another Hollow. You doubt that there's anyone else these creatures would follow. On the other hand, you obviously can't let him be. Even if you let him speak for now, you'll have to purify him immediately after. But maybe he'll provide you with valuable information?

You linger for only a moment before driving the sword through that accursed skull of his, right between the eyes. Blood streaks down from the wound, and the Hollow shrieks and cries in agony. The voice fades before long, as does the soul pierced by your weapon; not a single person in the room wakes from it.

This was probably the right choice. You couldn't have given him anymore chances. A simple mistake already may have cost the life of an innocent person. You can't make any more.

The fatigue sets in soon after the battle ends. You wipe the sweat off your forehead and sheathe your sword. The night isn't over yet.

You run to Kimiko, and tell her the gist of what went down. With a frown, she tells you to get her to the wounded man. You do so; you run through the air and open a window for her to crawl through. She turns on the lights and investigates both the soul and body. She shakes her head.

"I don't know if I can heal this, Clarissa. I've said it before, but I'm no good at it. I can barely heal even open wounds." She says. Kimiko sounds apologetic.

"It's worth a try, right? You managed to heal yourself before, so I'm sure you can pull this off, too." You urge her. She shakes her head with a sigh, but does cover the injured neck with a palm. You can see a faint green glow and hear the crack of bone.

After a while, Kimiko stands up, and shakes her head once more, this time, in resignation.

You slam your hand against a table. The items on it quake and fall over.

"Fucking hell! I should have just did what he told me to! Then this wouldn't have fucking happened..."

"It's not your fault. Send him to Soul Society and let's go home. I think that even if you followed his demands, he would have done it regardless." Kimiko mutters after a pause.

(1/3)
>>
>>39111845
Well shit.
Also, dropped your name there.
>>
>>39111845
"So I shouldn't have let it happen in the first place, that's the solution, isn't it? I've just been fucking it up all week long. So many people died because of me!" You hit the table again. Its legs creak under the strain.

"But you did well. You purified the Hollow, just like you were supposed to. Casualties are normal in this line of work. Even I can't avoid them sometimes." Kimiko continues her attempts to calm you down, but she keeps coming off as cold. She probably doesn't care about some stranger.

You squat down and poke the unconscious soul on the forehead with the hilt of your sword. In a flash of light, it's sent to Soul Society.

"I really doubt your casualties are above the goddamn fifties, Kimiko. Not in one fucking week. I'm just a fuckup without an excuse other than my own weakness. And that's no excuse."

She doesn't answer, and her expression remains stoic. You don't say anything else. It feels like without an excuse to rebuke, you can't think of anything else to blame yourself for. The two of you head on home for the night in begrudging silence.

...

You can't sleep. You can't get even the few hours of rest you have remaining after tonight's patrol. Your head hurts. The fact that you can't sleep bothers you even more. It's a vicious cycle.

In the darkness of your room, you notice Kimiko rising up from her futon.

"Are you alright?" She asks in a whisper. You consider her question for a bit.

"When is anything good going to happen?" You ask her back. You turn in your bed to face her properly, though it's too dark to see anything but her silhouette and the slight shine of her eyes. "I can't... I can't remember a single good thing that happened this week. Not one. I have to fight huge fucking monsters, people keep dying because of me, a friend tried to kill me, some creepy bitch is stalking me... I killed Aiko."

"...Do you want to talk about that?" Kimiko humbly asks. You can't help but let out a weak, brief chuckle.

(2/3)
>>
>>39111919
"There is nothing to fucking talk about! I got mad at her, grabbed a pipe and fucking hit her with it!" You scream at her. Kimiko doesn't answer, and you feel that after startling her with your raised voice, her expression remained the same. As stoic as before. As cold as before. As uncaring as before. You were about to yell at her about how much it annoys you. It's not like you don't understand - after all, why would she, someone who's never even lived as a human being, care about you and your stupid problems? You understand, but it's still making you mad.

Kimiko speaks up before you do.

"Can I do something to help, Clarissa?"

Her question sounds so innocently sincere that she resembles a child. She's not being cold because she doesn't care - she just doesn't know what to do or what to say. In over a hundred years, it seems that she's never learned how to comfort a person. This is really stupid.

And what could she even do to help?

That's what makes it more appealing to me anon, if it doesn't work then maybe Clarissa could make progress on dealing with things, and if it DOES work then I think that'd be kinda creepy but in a nice way, in that it'd add to her characterization/unhinged status and make the quest and MC more interesting.

"No. I'm going to sleep. Sorry for piling my crap on you." You can't think of anything she could do for you that doesn't border on depravity. So you turn away, alone and uncomforted. You hear the rustling of cloth behind you; Kimiko must have gone to sleep as well.

There really isn't anything that she can do, unless she could revive the dead or punish someone for their sins. Shinigami are gods of only the dead, and they aren't judges. At most, they are the executors.

If you were to confess your crimes to humans, no one would ever believe your story.

There is no one else who could do it.

You'll be getting off scot-free, whether you like it or not.

And it's frustrating. You really did love her. At the very least, Aiko deserves justice.

That frustration turns into fatigue. It weighs on your eyelids, and forces them to a close.

...

There are so many others ripe for the taking, and yet you linger on just the one.

A thick fog. A carpeted floor. Someone's frustrated voice that grows louder by the second. Those are the things you can feel.

So many others who are more beautiful, and who would make for far better lovers.

It's really faint, so you stay quiet and unmoving.

If you feel sad, then just allow yourself to have a treat. You can pick anyone, and there are so many to pick from.

It's still hard to hear, but the tone makes you feel like you're being lectured.

Even when covered by walls, your uncertainty leaks into and taints this place. "I can't see anything through this cursed fog, except for that girl. She grates my nerves, cute as she may be. I tire of her and of this mist."

Your vision isn't any clearer, but you can hear the words without needing to strain yourself. It's not that the speaker is louder, it's more like you've gotten 'used' to hearing it. The voice, in actuality, has no sound; it's as if thoughts are being placed into the back of your head. They aren't your own thoughts, you know that for sure. If you had to compare, it somewhat resembles reading.

"Who are you?" You ask, your own voice just as meek as the one you've been hearing at the start. But the other speaker pauses its rant.

"I am you." It answers quite casually, after having taken a moment to find the proper explanation. "Don't bother asking me to clarify. You know what it means. That is all it comes down to. I am not in the mood to argue semantics. These conditions are completely unsuitable for a conversation."

"Where am I?" You ask.

"Our world. Our realm and domain. A fortress I had built and a home we shall reside in for the rest of time. Unfortunately, you can't witness the glorious craftsmanship."

"What is your name?"

There is an importance to that question, you're certain. But the answer is not something you expect.

"I don't have a name."

The speaker seems to grow more irritated and less talkative as you go along. There is probably little left of his patience, and little time remaining for this dream.

...

I have this suspicion about our "sword", looking forward to see if I'm right.
>>
>>39113569
Why not? Because that's not how it's fucking done. And we don't want to insult the crazy person who lives in our head.

>"What's with this fog?"
"Is it a metaphor for guilt or something?"

H-how is it done then anon?
>>
>>39113665
Well first of all, this is literally our first time talking to a person and we haven't even seen them yet. How do you fucks expect to come up with any kind of name with no information?

What is wrong with you?
>>
>>39113681
Well they're us so it couldn't be that hard.
I'm thinking Clarissa 2.
>>
>>39113695
Did you miss the part where the person talking is a man? I can't tell if you're saying stupid things because you want bad things to happen or if you think this will go anywhere good.

>>39113501
>"What's with this fog?"

Lighten up anon, you're taking Clarissa 2 seriously.

There has never been grounds to lighten up in this quest.

It started out with us having freshly murdered our girlfriend.
>>
>>39113773

Guys he said it's a man. So clearly it's Clarence.

We can't even fucking see him. What is wrong with you people.
>>
>>39113719
I missed it, could you help me?
>>
>>39113783
Well that's no reason not to be friendly with the visitor in our head, there's no need to be formal or stand-offish if it's just us anyway.
>>
>>39113808
>little left of his patience
In the small chance you aren't trolling me.
>>
>>39113803
>We can't even fucking see him. What is wrong with you people.
Shit, son. It's a fucking joke, there's No need to get so mad.
>>
>>39113854
Brings up a good point though, why do we have a dude in our head? I call shenanigans, he's obviously not part of us at all.
>>
I vote we name it Mokuteki
>>
>>39113892
Reading everything again, he speaker is referred to as "it" more often than as "him".

In fact, the only time the voice is referred to as a male is in that sentence, so it might be a slip by the QM.
>>
>>39113981
Could be, could also be it's referred to as 'it' since it's a disembodied (but masculine) voice in our head.

Although even if that was the case, 'it' might fit better...eh, who cares.
>>
>>39114012
I think clarissa just doesn't know what the voice's gender is. "it" is gender neutral, after all.
>>
>>39113892
Do you not understand how Zanpakuto spirits work? Shunsui has two women in his head, a pirate and a ninja.
>>
>>39114222
A pirate AND a ninja? Man just missing the Viking for maximum ~2002 memes.
>>
>>39114222
I can't remember where, but I thought it was mentioned that most Zanpakuto match the sex of the wielder? Since they're part of them and all?
>>
>>39114266
Most of them do, yeah. Then again, Shunsui is another of those anomalous shinigami that infest the upper seats of the Gotei 13.
>>
>>39114266
Well this guy might not be our zanpakuto, or at least not our only one..

The weird thing is, the spirit who claimed he had no name really did have one, it's just another spirit had taken it as his own for a while.

"What's with this fog? I can't see a damn thing."

"You are the cause of it." It seems almost eager to respond and accuse you.

"Is it because of my guilt, then?"

"...No. I don't believe so," The speaker replies. "It's uncertainty."

"Uncertainty? About what?" You urge him to elaborate, feeling like time is limited.

"Perhaps it's about the girl you're so obsessed with, and your future with her copy. Or maybe it's only related to your own life, and what will be of it once you're through with her. Perhaps you're just afraid to die in combat," It pauses, as if to muse over its own words for a bit. "Well, it could very well be all of the above, and there is most likely more. Either way, I want you to get rid of this mist."

"And how do I do something like that? Do you want me to just stop caring about everything?"

"Sentient beings are afraid what they don't understand. Uncertainty is fear. Once you stop being afraid, once you accept things for what they are, this fog will dissipate."

"...That advice is bullshit."

"That's all it comes down to. Of course, you'll never be able to do anything but fear if the fear is all you think about. Distract yourself and try to derive some enjoyment from your life. The only one who's making you miserable is you." The speaker pauses, before adding something as if in conclusion. "Heed the advice and rid me of this eyesore. Resolve your problems, and then we may speak again."

The fog dims, as if the world's sun is setting.

"Wait, you're done? But I have a lot of questions left!"

"There will be a better time. I don't have the patience to speak in these conditions."

"Just one more!"

The darkness holds, and doesn't creep any further. The speaker keeps its silence. Waiting.

"You... you said you don't have a name, right? Then how about I give you one?" You ask, a faint smile growing on your face.

But the speaker keeps its silence. You'd think it was gone if you couldn't feel its disapproving glare.

"...I thought it would be something important. I don't have a name, and I don't think I need one. If you just want something to refer to me as, for the sake of convenience, then I suppose I don't mind. If you make it something foolish, I'll punish you."
