The case of the missing student, it turns out, is not a grand adventure.

You only have to stroll by the broad driveway that curves around the White house to pick up Nathaniel’s scent. He’s only been missing a few days, and you’re rather certain he hadn’t showered before he left (Nico makes it clear to you that this, this behavior, is gross), so the flavor is rather… sealed in, so to speak.

You don’t do much detecting so much as just walking. You do a lot of walking. You walk all the way from the edge of northern Queens to the beginnings of Brooklyn on the southern end of town. The trail is fresh and clear and all you have to really do is follow it.

It terminates at the door to an old, condemned house on the edge of the borough. You can hear (and smell) Nathaniel inside, along with someone else.

Both of them are pretty damn surprised when you kick down the door. They scrabble off-of one another, grasping for the sheets draped across the mattress they’ve managed to drag into the building. It’s almost impressive, how quickly and smoothly Nico manages to slap her hand across Molly’s eyes.

You wouldn’t have thought of that. You’re more concerned with the fact that Nathanial’s partner appears to have dark red skin and a long, sinuous tail.

He’s going home, that’s for certain. Erin is a little harder to plan for, but you’re going to risk a little on Nathaniel’s parents possibly not being total cockmunchers and being okay with their son porking a horrible mutie. You make sure she doesn’t have any weird mind control stuff that’d make folks extra nervous (she doesn’t. Apparently she can excrete some kind of inky shadow-stuff through her pores) before delivering your verdict.

“You guys fine with that?”

It strikes you that you’re not really phrasing it as question.

They nod their heads in unison, and you help them pack up their meagre supplies.

It takes hours to make your way all the way back up to the White house. Hours of keeping Erin safely invisible. By the time you get there, you’re just about ready for everything to get worse, but… you’re pleasantly surprised.

The Whites look like they belong in a sitcom. Mr. White is tall, square-jawed, and wears his shirt with one too many buttons undone. Mrs. White, you notice, is where Nathaniel gets his blue eyes from, and she has the look of a banker or a lawyer or someone like that to her. Your arrival on their estate is followed quickly by a dressing-down, delivered mostly via shouting, of such magnitude that you and Nico both cringe, Nathaniel looking smaller and smaller by the second.

When they turn out to be okay with Erin staying, you almost check to see if the sky has turned orange, or that the sun hasn’t been replaced by a giant block of ice.

“…You realize that’s a crime, right?”

Apparently, they’d consider it criminal not to help her out.

God fucking damn.

You try your best to hide the envy as you say your goodbyes.

At least they paid you.
