In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of the thousands of Imperial provinces that form the front line in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But the Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commissioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale.

To Alexander Kerr

>Lord Kerr, I am willing to offer you a sum of 200 million thrones, as well as a Heavy Transport vessel that recently came into my possession. There is also an amount of construction materials on board the transport valued at ~120 million thrones. We can remove these from the vessel, or you may wish to have them yourself, in which case my offer is 100 million thrones, the Heavy Transport and all materials on board. In exchange for the contemptor dreadnought chassis, 2 Marine-sized Deimos Class Predators, and 1 human-sized Deimos Predator.
Regards, Chapter Master.
>>
As this seems an opportune time between activities I'd like to post the following for people's consideration:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
GoR participating: Damokleon (nominal authority over team), one Apothecary, one Techmarine, one Deathwatch veteran, one First Company veteran

Primary Mission: Luigi wanted to talk to Drey Kasting, special agent of the High Lords of Terra. Discuss having the Belisarii dynasty return to power. General feelings on Terra regarding this and any support/opposition.
Duties: All members to talk with Kasting as Damokleon deems necessary. If not needed then to act as honour guard, body guard and messengers.
Duration and Success Criteria: Until Drey Kasting is convinced or 6 Terran months have passed. Updates on mission to be sent to Tombstone monthly or on mission completion.

Secondary Mission: Investigate founding of Ghosts of Retribution. Why were they founded? Why sent to Sector Deus? By whom? Was Entyrus Zykion assassinated because of this?
Duties: Damokleon is the primary point of contact, especially with HLOT, Inquisition, etc. Give Damokleon the key from Nerial Derang. Apothecary to investigate our geneseed origins and creation, interface with Magos Biologii, etc. Techmarine to interface with Mechanicus as necessary. Veteran and Deathwatch Veteran to act as honour guard, body guard and perform duties as requested by other team members.
Duration and Success Criteria: If critical facts are discovered then the team is to return immediately. Otherwise mission continues until two Terran years have passed from mission start (in parallel with Primary Mission). All team members are to either stay on Terra or return together, no going alone. Damokleon has discretionary authority to modify parameters within reason (trust). Astropathic updates monthly or until mission completion.

(splitting because too long)
>>
>>39033856
Tertiary Mission: Improve individual skills. Acquire unique/unusual equipment. Find allies.
Duties: All members are to make attempts to improve their skillset, acquire new allies for the Chapter or obtain equipment that is otherwise difficult to obtain so long as this does not interfere with Primary or Secondary Missions. Examples include Damokleon training with other psykers on Terra, the apothecary gaining extra knowledge from Magos Biologos, Techmarine engaging in supplementary training from Mechanicus on Mars, veterans training with other Astartes chapters on Terra or Custodes, etc.
Duration and Success Criteria: Tertiary Mission automatically terminated at end of Primary and Secondary Missions

Other: ask about statue with sword?, get equipment blessed on Mars/Terra?
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Discuss amongst yourselves.
>>
>>39033848
>>39033856
I approve on both missives, just add 4 more tacticals to Damokleon at least
>>
>>39033856

Nice idea, but have some scouts and loyal chapter serfs included as well. Scouts might always come in handy, if we need sneaky or additional guards or something.
As for the chapter serfs, they might come in handy, because they are not space marines and may roam around unnoticed and this can be used as a reward. (Trip to terra, yay)
It's not like we would miss them much.
>>
>>39033886
See what happens when you offer Mars certain STCs...

a KNIFE STC got some guardsmen a planet, each.

Grease them cogs if you want things.
>>
>>39033856
Our founding is always the Primary objective imo. We just can't progress it at all times so we move to secondary objectives.
Whenever there is an opportunity to find out something about our origins, it should be a top priority to investigate.
>>
>>39033856
Damokleon and his part should also take the Revenant Armour STC to the Raven Guard and Custodes. They should be very interested in such technology and they're not gonna go all "muh tech heresy" on us.

Omen readers on Tachion Primaris have declared this to be a year of Assassinated Hopes. Starting new ventures is not advisable, but plots against the well being of others will be more successful than usual.

Brothers have spent last year training and improving their skills. +7 Chapter XP

Dark Angels, supported by Mortificators and Black Ravens have assaulted Sarrarid Worlds, destroying one of the bigger splinter human empires in the Segmentum Obscurus. Rumour goes that planets held uncountable treasure, many of which remained there since the Dark Age of Technology. High Lords of Terra have redistributed some of it across the galaxy. Roll d100, on 40 or less something will reach you, on 3 or less you will get something spectacular. You can use 1 Favour to immediately get the best result.

Pexar, world in Subsector in Aeternus, is showing signs of growing Ork concentration. Navis Imperialis warns all traders not to travel using nearby space lanes.

Chaos warship was spotted near Erbia, Subsector Dominus, however Imperial Navy patrol engaged and lightly wounded it. It is retreating in the direction of Artoria (15%), Folkvangr (45%), Agrotus (40%).

>>39033678
Brother Gluben, mutated marine with lizard-like skin, shows signs of further mutation, as his teeth start developing fangs...

Also, Librarian Trianon gains +1 PR through his training and experience.

You are contacted by Leutenant Sternberg of the Imperial Fists regarding his previous request for help. He is asking you to spare him 2 squads of marines or 1 Terminator squad. He is not keen on giving a lot of details, but he claims that they have arrived here seeking a long-lost relic of theirs.

So stuff to do...
-Have Seran look into what's in that cogitator. Maybe Voughtius will help.
-Send Xyptus the updated info on the Belisarius kids. On Solstreim, 'in shadow of throne' may suggest they're squatting near governor's palace.
-Have the Sixth step up purges on the Orks in the deep vardan jungle. Use orbiting Ghost's Lance for bombardments to help.
-Invest in spies on Tartarus station to find out abour Rogue Trader D'anger. What she's doing, whether she knows who betrayed her father, where is she.
-Send message to Inquisitor Eisenhorn that Silencius, known accomplice of Quixos, is descending on Ophelia VII. The same place Commodus Voke is at. Maybe Voke can deal with him.
-Open the box Kerr gave us.

Give Sternberg a couple of tactical squads from the fifth.

Tech use!

Also, if Magos Voughtius is to be included she will insist upon setting up at least 1 servitor/servoskull/cogitator to use as a proxy/firewall/degree of separation.

With an MIU (Voughtius has one, if needed. Seran can data-link with her to use it), it is possible to remote connect to the proxy that is directly connected to the device.

If the device explodes or has attack protocols, the proxy should prevent them from reaching the important Seran brain.

Well I'm all for the Mission to Terra obviously. I chose a 5-man elite group because I didn't feel a larger group would do anything that these 5 couldn't do and it would be inadvisable to send more senior people like CM/Laptus/Klementhos to Terra when we're supposed to be watching Sector Deus. That's mostly why I didn't add more tacticals/scouts. A 5-man squad where each one has some prestige to them seemed ideal to me but if people want that's fine.

As far as waiting goes >>39034214 I see your point but as Trianon is 3 years out I fear the mission would be set aside and forgotten.

The cogitator seems to be of a very unorthodox, yet human, design. Seran with Voughtius' help is able to brute force outer layer of savage code that guards the machine and reports his findings:
>It appears that this machine is the work of non-Imperial human renegades. I would estimate 85% chance of it being made in Styrian Triarchy. From what we know so far, it's been used for communications and data storage. Apparently there is a specialised jackport that can be used to connect this directly with questor engines at the Astropathic choir, that's most likely how the Sector Governor was using it. We are pretty sure that this machine was used for encoded interstellar communication, astropaths wouldn't even know what is it that they are sending. If you wish, we can probe deeper to get access to the data, but it will be more dangerous the deeper we go.
(roll d100 if you wish to go deeper)

+Outer layer: Breached - 0%
+Inner layer: Locked - 45%
+Sanctum: Locked - 75%

>>39035016
Tyrel Hagen is pleased to receive a soulword from you, here's his reply:
>Dear Chapter Master, I am glad to see that you are still helping us to protect the borders of our Sector. The ship in question bore markings of one o the four Unholy Powers. As I am unable to utter their names on air as this would endanger this astropathic message, i'll just tell you that it's most likely the One that Rots, however we have only partial confirmation. The ship appeared to be on a mission, because it retreated despite having a chance to engage us and possibly even win, as our patrol wasn't that strong. If you'll decide to hunt it - be aware, it's slow, but heavily armed.

Sixth Company, seeing that orks have grown bolder recently with your permission organised a massive surprise attack against the ork strongholds in the Deep Jungle. Orbital bombardment, combined with your new Raven Guard Doctrine prove to be devastating.

Your Casualties: 32 brothers wounded, 0 losses
Enemy Casualties: 3 Ork strongholds, 16 hideouts

Leutenant Hector, who organised the operation, gains skill Strategy 45+2d10 and trait "Orbital Devastation", giving him a +10 bonus when calling down orbital strikes.

Operation Burning Mounain is such a great success, that you have chance to initiate Complete Eradication solution, it would tie down 200 marines for 10+d10 years and would inflict serious damage to the ecosystem of Varda, possibly changing geographical features. In the end Orks would be devastated down to the last spore, leaving a chance of their resurrection at 1% or less.

Your fingerprint is declined, however as strange as it might be, your genetic code is suitable! Sternberg has few words about the box:
>Hm... I've seen a few of such boxes back the Phalanx at the Reliquarium. I believe those are the Heresy era order-boxes, these were used to transport especially important pieces of information physically rather than entrusting them to be sent through the warp. Not sure what secrets could it hide, though...

Sternberg thanks you and takes his leave. Please roll d100 for his mission success.

For the anti-nurgle ship mission in light of missing Brethorius we are commanding the mission ourselves with Shadow Guard in tow. Also you should reference >>39036546 and let us contact silent guardians (rolling for contact in case).

Regarding the Mission to Terra I'm happy with only 5 marines with the different specialisations represented. There is some disagreement as to if we're doing it now or not so I ask that people vote (preferably in this thread) as to sending them now or waiting for Trianon.

Alexander Kerr is awestruck by the Iron Phoenix.

As his vessel begins to unload the relics and take on the Chapter's payments, he seeks out Chapter Master [Redacted] (or his designated representative). "I was unaware that Mormark had such a monument to humanity in orbit. Truly, the Emperor's Light shines upon this world despite the shadow of the xenos invasion. Is the surface still as dangerous as they say?"

The Rogue Trader extends his hand to seal the compact between your two parties.

"I'm afraid so Lord Kerr. Beyond the cities are nought but barren froze wasteland infested with bestial dangers both flying and furry.
Thank you very much for your custom, and please forgive my early offers. I'm must admit I have little experience in the relics market.
I wish you the greatest luck in your endeavour."

>Is a libby necessary?
>Beyond their psychic duties, the Librarians of the Astartes are also expected to record the great deeds of their Chapter and maintain the Chapter's storehouse of ancient lore
As chapter lore is specifically in the purview of librarians, sending one to research our chapter origins seems appropriate. Our late librarian Anterion made it his function to research such things until he tragically--somehow--died. Furthermore librarians and chaplains are generally seen as command authorities. Since I don't think a chaplain would help in this type of mission and we're not sending a captain a librarian is a logical choice.

98/84 vs. 63/45 = 1 degree of success on opposition + critical failure

Seran manages to crack the inner layer of defences, however non-Mechanicus software has some strange virus on it that corrodes MIU link's sensitivity. Roll d10-3(for skull protection), Seran and Voughtius both lose that much points from their Tech Use skill.

They have gained access to control of the connections and no you have confirmation that they were organised in such a way so that astropaths would direct their messages towards the Triarchy space. You also get access to Triarchy Comms Codes. In order to gain access to communications history, you'd need to breach Sanctum.

He seems to be a broken man from years of imprisonment, but still has a few drops of pride left.

Regarding spies - your Chapter had some at earlier point, but as for decades nobody really cultivated them, your networks disappeared, you have none. Xyptus has a few close allies, but they are with him now on his search. You would need to send a person or a marine to do this task, a named NPC.

Seran manages to override safety mechanism through the use of access granted by your matching DNA. He decides to open unlocked box in a hermetically sealed room at the Tombstone with a regulated temperature and humidity. His guess proves to be correct, there are paper documents inside, which are ten millennia old. If they would have been opened anywhere else, your treasure would have immediately turned to dust. The order box contains about two dozens of various messages, mostly about logistics and strategic deployment, however all the important information seems to be encoded.
