You are Alaric Sepheran, an Astartes of the Blood Angels chapter. You have served faithfully for many, many years, and are a respected veteran of the chapter and a member of Master Dante’s honor guard. In the last few weeks you have been suffering from dreams of a terrible nature, and as you finally reached out to seek aid, you have been chosen by the Chapter Master for an important mission: to act as the Blood Angel’s representative on the world of Eskaton, in payment for a debt incurred a millenium ago.

>We’ll be using the Heroquest 2 ruleset for any dice-rolling we have to do (uses a d20). The standard here seems to be the best of three rolls, with crits taking precedence. A two-page summary of the Heroquest 2 rules may be found here: Cheat Sheet
>We’re beginning to build Alaric’s character sheet, which may be found here: http://pastebin.com/hc813EzX . If you would like to make suggestions for additional abilities to be added to the sheet, or to change some of the points values, please feel free to include those in your response.
>Last call for equipment suggestions. Keep in mind that I am more in line with the Deathwatch idea of Astartes weapons being completely separate from their human equivalents. There was also some discussion about whether a volkite caliver was reasonable for Alaric to have -- weigh in now and we’ll make the final decision. The initial concept was that it was a personal gift from the Adeptus Mechanicus in recognition of Alaric’s aid while exploring an archeotech ruin.
>I have an extensive service history typed up for Alaric. If you are interested in reading it, I’ll put it in the pastebin. The alternative is to simply allow that information to be revealed during play as it comes up. Let me know what you guys feel is appropriate.

By now you have become accustomed to the soft and pervasive hum of the ship’s Gellar Field. The small frigate slips through the warp easily, without the turbulence and disruptions you have sometimes encountered aboard such vessels.

You are en route to Eskaton, a world you know little about, and which is listed only as a relatively minor world -- not even the sub-sector capital. And yet it is an ancient place and one which is bound to your chapter by an ancient oath made a thousand years ago: the Astartes make good their debts.

Your room aboard the Life of Sanguinius is similar to that which you left behind in the fortress-monastery of your chapter. The small ebony statuettes you brought with you are here, surrounded once more by burnt-out candlestubs.

The dreams which have plagued you for so many weeks have not subsided, but to your relief they have not worsened in the depths of the warp.

You finish your morning prayer and snuff out the candle; you have risen early, as you always do.

I'm all for Volkite Cavalier. I would also be very glad to read about service history of Alaric.

I propose to include those items in equipement:

Iron Halo
Artificer Armour MK IV Pattern
Death Mask
Blood of Heroes (blood vials of our dear fallen brothers)
Volkite Cavalier
Purity Seal(s)
Infernus pistol
Frag Grenades

You rise and dress, pulling on your embroidered linen clothing, expecting at every moment to feel the breath on your neck and shoulder, but it never comes. You sigh with relief and make your way out of the room and down the corridor out of officer’s country, making your way to where your armsmen have been quartered by the ships crew. Even from outside the door, you hear their subdued laughter and quiet chatter; it sounds as if they are playing dice.

Okay. I'll try to get that sorted. My apologies everyone.

You raise your hand and knock several times on the bulkhead door, the sounds inside tailing off as you hear an exchange of several voices. After a few moments you hear the latch of the door release and the hinges of the door creak as someone pulls it open.

Inside you see the eleven men of your small detachment in their undress fatigues, each standing by their bunk. The remains of their dice game lies half covered under a jacket, where three other men stand, less orderly than your armsmen.

“My lord,” Sergeant Nye greets you calmly, “We were not expecting you so early. How may we serve?”

You smile slightly and raise a quiet hand. “There is nothing, Sergeant,” you reply mildly, “I simply thought it would be good for us all to know each other somewhat better.”

You glance at the three men you do not recognize standing in one corner of the room.

“I do not know these men, for instance. Will you introduce me?”

Sergeant Nye nods once and leads you over to them. “This is Captain Short, my lord,” he tells you in subdued tones. “The pilot for our transport when we reach Eskaton. These are his crew: Petty Officers Gareth and Ian.”

You nod to Captain Short and then to his crewmembers, giving them a small smile. “We’re glad to have you with us. I confess I was beginning to worry we might have to walk everywhere once we arrived.”

Captain Short smiles broadly. “Have no fear of that, my lord. It may be a little cramped in the gunship with you and your armsmen, but I think we can fit you all in. And you’ll have no fear of a lack of firepower.”

You raise an eyebrow and look at Sergeant Nye. “A gunship?”

Captain Short smirks proudly and crosses his arms. “Indeed, my lord. Finest in the chapter if you ask anyone who knows. Can’t have you landing in a mere shuttle, now can we?”

“Just as long as it’s nothing too ostentatious,” you murmur, suppressing a rueful smile at the man’s enthusiasm.

He adopts a very serious expression and nods. “Of course, my lord,” he replies, though his eyes are sparkling with laughter.

“Well,” you say, looking around, “you’re very welcome to our company. I hope I did not interrupt your dice game too badly.”

Sergeant Nye flushes slightly. “No, my lord,” he murmurs. “It’s nothing can’t be fixed.”

You gesture vaguely to the floor. “Please don’t stop on my account. We can talk while you play.”

A sense of relief moves through the room, and the men crowd respectfully around, giving you space but resetting their game and beginning to play.

You find a seat on one of the footlockers, which creaks under your weight as you settle on it.

The clatter of dice soon fills the room once more, and the now somewhat subdued exclamations of the losers and winners ring in time with their cadence.

After a short while you turn to Sergeant Nye, who is leaning against one of the double bunks, watching but not participating.

“How long have you been together?” You ask, and make a small gesture with one of your fingers, encompassing the men of his squad. “As a unit, I mean.”

He turns to you. “Quite a while, my lord,” he replies, “five years or so at least, most of us.”

He nods towards a few of the men. “About half of us came through Armageddon together as a squad. The others -- like Kael and Rimer and a few others -- were in Armageddon but in a different company.” He shrugs and looks at you. “We’ve all seen death firsthand, my lord, if that is what concerns you.”

That's a little too high tech for me, I'm afraid.

“I have no doubts of that, sergeant,” you reply quietly, looking over his men, their movements crisp and controlled, even in play.

“You were on Armageddon for the entire campaign?”

“Yes, lord,” he replies, “we saw Chapter Master Tu’shan gift you that infernus pistol resting with your wargear”

You flush slightly and look away. “That was a small thing,” you murmur, and he shrugs.

“If you say so, my lord,” he replies quietly, “it was not a ceremony, that is true, but it was a gift nonetheless. That is no small thing, not in my eyes -- nor in my men’s. We know the quality of the lord we follow.”

You smile a little and nod slightly to him in thanks, a vision of the bloody demon in your skin flickering through your mind.

“You are too kind, sergeant,” you murmur, watching the dice clatter across the floor.

“But to answer your question, my lord, we fought in most of the major engagements, just as you and your brothers did, although Master Dante often ordered us to act jointly with the Guard forces there, as a liason, if you take my meaning.”

You nod and smile. “Indeed I do, sergeant. It sounds as if you are well chosen for this duty.”

“And you, Captain Short? Did you also fight at Armageddon?”

He shakes his head slightly, absorbed for a moment in the dice game before looking up at you. “No, my lord,” he replies, “no, I was posted too far away at the time to join the campaign. But I’ve been in many engagements, as have my crew.” He nods to them. “We’ll not let you down.”

He smirks and gives you a sly look. “Not from too high up, anyway.”

Kael snorts and looks at you. “Best be careful, my lord, he’s a wild pilot, no mistake.”

You give him a smile. “Then we’d all better be careful, it sounds like.”

“Indeed, my lord,” he agrees, “though we had plenty of practice doing grav-jumps on Armageddon, didn’t we Rimer?”

The other man looks up at you and nods, a crooked smile on his face. “We certainly did, my lord. That’s when most of our company died, I’m sorry to say, but we held our position until relieved.” He sobers, eyes growing slightly distant. “It’s a hell of a world.”

You nod slightly. “I have few fond memories of that place,” you reply quietly, and all nod their assent.

You fall silent for a moment, the room quiet and still as every man drifts back into memory, the sands and blood of Armageddon filling your thoughts.

“Things had improved significantly by the Season of Fire,” you murmur, breaking the quiet, “as I’m sure you all remember.”
All eyes turn quietly to you.

“I had been there already for two years, fighting with Master Dante and the rest of the first company, moving from place to place to reinforce the lines. Even then, things were on a knife edge.”

You take a breath and smile. “By chance we had found some indications that a major warlord was present in the area, and Master Dante wanted to eliminate him and perhaps buy us some breathing room while the orks sorted out their new command.”

“We made the jump from a thunderhawk, thirty of us with jump packs, and crashed down right in the middle of their camp.” You smile broadly. “It was a sight, as I’m sure Master Dante intended: we were close enough for the guardsmen to see us from their trenches.”

“He put up a damned good fight, the warlord and his boys,” you shrug, “but in the end we killed him and all those around him, and fought our way back to the lines.”

You restrain a smile. “The thing is, and I don’t know how it happened, but Brother Timos managed to get the seat of his armor…” you gesture illustratively to your backside, “shot off.”

A few hesitant smiles greet this description. “And as we were reorganizing for another raid, Master Dante turns to all of us and says without the blink of an eye: at least we no longer have to worry about Brother Timos sitting down on the job.”

You chuckle slightly and shake your head. “Never would have expected that.”

You smile slightly and rise, looking to Sergeant Nye. “I’ve taken up enough of your time. Thank you for indulging my presence.”

He smiles and looks at his men. “Not at all my lord. It was our pleasure.”

“Captain Short?” you say quietly, and the officer looks up. “Would you mind showing me this transport you speak so highly of?”

He rises quickly, easily abandoning the game. “Of course, my lord,” he replies, “it’s in the hangar. I’ll take you there now, if you like.”

You bid farewell to the armsmen and to Captain Short’s crew, who remain behind as their pilot leads you out of the room and along the many halls to the ship’s hangar.

Close by you see a Fire Raptor, heavy with armament. “That’s it my lord,” he says calmly, but the pride in his voice is unmistakeable. “It’s not technically a transport, but it should fit an Astartes and your armsmen with a bit of work.”

You nod silently and run your fingers along the fine line of the craft’s surface. “Beautiful,” you murmur, eyes taking it in, and you feel Captain Short smile with pride.

“A Fire Raptor, if I’m not mistaken,” you say to him, and he nods silently. “These are very rare, are they not?”

Captain Short nods again and walks slowly to join you by the craft. “Indeed, my lord. It is said that its design predates the Imperium itself.” He shrugs. “Whether that is true or not, it is certainly ancient. This particular craft is a new production.” He waves his hand a little. “Perhaps fifty years old -- the Mechanicus likes to be vague about those details.”

You nod slightly, moving along the fuselage toward the wings. “And its armament?”

He smiles and walks over to stand by one of the ball turrets embedded in the gunship’s side. “Two independent ball turrets mounted in the sides,” he begins, “as I’m sure you can see. Twin-linked autocannons in each, plus four hellstrike missiles mounted in the wings and a bolt cannon in the nose.” He pats one of the barrels affectionately. “You’ll not lack for firepower, my lord.”

You smile appreciatively. “So I see, Captain Short.”

You rub your thumb speculatively on the tip of the barrel before looking at the pilot.

“How much ammunition do you have available?” You nod to the missiles slung under the aircraft’s wings. “Do you only have the four of those available?”

He nods slightly. “Only those, my lord, but the PDF on Eskaton will be able to resupply us should we need it. There’s nothing special about the armament on her, even though she’s more or less unique. As for your own weapons…”

He trails off and shrugs. “That will be somewhat trickier. There’s enough space on the gunship that we can take some resupply for you, but it’ll be somewhat limited. I’ll speak with the captain. Perhaps we can have a shuttle allocated to bring down additional ammunition for your weapons.”

He nods, his eyes flicking over to his gunship. “Of course, my lord.” He hesitates. “Does she please you, my lord?”

The metal makes a satisfying ring as you pat it affectionately. “Yes she does, captain,” you say softly, “she does indeed. I look forward to seeing you fly her.”

Captain Short smiles broadly. “I’m glad, my lord.”

“Tell me,” you ask him, changing tacks, “would it be possible to do a grav jump from her?”

The other man looks thoughtful, his eyes considering his craft. “It’s possible,” he murmurs, “the speed might be an issue, but I think there would be enough room for the twelve of you and the packs.” He looks you in the eye. “I couldn’t say for certain, my lord. We’d have to load everyone in with all their kit in order to be sure. Your jump pack might be the biggest difficulty, but we’ll try it as soon as we have the chance.”

“Thank you,” you reply, “I should go speak with the captain and see how we’re progressing.”

“Of course, my lord,” he answers, looking fondly at the gunship. “I’ll see what I can do about your ammunition.”

The armsmen guarding the ship’s bridge admit you without question, pulling back the heavy door to allow you entrance, inside the crew of servitors and chapter serfs go about their business, silently making way for you as you pass through. The captain and his officers are not difficult to find; they are the only other Astartes in the room.

You greet them quietly and compliment their warship.

The captain greets you warmly and clasps hands with you. “She has served us well, these many years,” he replies, and shrugs. “Not so well as when we were together on the Spear of Sanguinius, eh?”

You laugh and nod. “Few ships are as fine as she was, brother,” you say with a broad smile.

He nods wistfully. “She was a beauty. Fast and clean. Lances that could swat a gnat from the aether.” He glances at one of his officers sadly and shakes his head. “Not like these damned guns they’ve saddled me with, Alaric. Like trying to…” he gestures vaguely to try to come up with an appropriate comparison, but fails.

You laugh and nod in understanding. “I understand, brother. You’ve taken more to the naval side of things, I see.”

Ralman nods slightly and glances around his bridge. “I suppose I have. It’s a bit of a solitary life, all things considered, but someone needs to do it. Not everyone can win glory on the ground.”

You smile innocently and he laughs.

“But she’s a good ship. I’ve had her for seven years, perhaps a little more. I enjoy the frigates -- I served as first officer on a strike cruiser for a few years after we were together on the Spear, but it was not to my taste. Too sluggish.”

“Are we making good progress then?” You ask, turning your eyes to a navigation display.

Ralman nods again. “Indeed we are. We should reach Eskaton by the end of the month -- as near as we can calculate here in the warp.”

“Is there anything you can tell me about the world? I didn’t have much time before I left the monastery.”

The other man shrugs slightly, and flicks his hands across the display, bringing up an image of the world. “A typical planet,” he says mildly, “somewhat less polluted than usual.” He smiles. “It even has blue skies.”

You raise your eyebrows and stand beside him, looking down at the display. “Not much to be spoken of about it -- other than the oath that binds them to us. They’re fairly wealthy, but not inordinately so. Their systems ships have always seemed professionally handled whenever I have visited.”

The world turns on the display as you listen, taking in his words with a silent nod.

“Other than that, there really isn’t much to tell. It’s a very typical planet. Average defense forces, perhaps an above average system fleet.” He shrugs. “I hope that helps.”

“No chance I can convince you to stay on?” you laugh. “It would be a comfort to have you overhead.”

Ralman laughs with you and shakes his head. “No, my friend, I’m afraid not. You’ll have to fend for yourself -- unlike when we were on the Spear together.”

You give him a look. “Mmm. As I recall it was I who was captain of that ship, brother,” you laugh, “not the other way around.”

He smiles. “Only until you requested a transfer. I understood, though, not everyone can handle the responsibility.”

You nod and laugh. “Well I suppose I did have an excellent first officer to look after me, and when I heard he was leaving…” you trail off and smile. “I’m glad for you, though, brother. You always were more skilled than I.”

Ralman accepts your praise graciously. “You are too kind brother. In truth I miss those years on the Spear. We were free and unburdened: given a mission and told to execute it.”

You nod sympathetically. “Good years,” you say quietly.

Ralman clears his throat after a moment. “I don’t want to keep you,” he says mildly. “I’m glad you came up to talk, though. It’s been too long.”

You clasp hands with him. “Too long,” you echo, and smile.

“Too long,” you echo, and smile, “May our next meeting be as happy and shorter in its coming.”

Ralman smiles warmly and squeezes your hand. “That is my hope as well, brother,” he replies. “If I should chance by this world again I will be sure to stop by and see you.”

“That would make me glad indeed, Ralman,” you reply with a smile to match his own.

As you walk down the corridor to your quarters, your heart is warm and lifted. It was good to see Ralman again, and the gloom which has settled on your heart has lessened. Even your quarters seem more welcoming after the time you have spent with your brother and your new comrades, and this mission which once seemed so lonesome has now brightened in your mind.

You lay down on the cold slab of your bed, feeling the hum of the Gellar Field through it, soft and steady.

For a long time you try to sleep, eyes open as you stare up at the ceiling.

In the late watches of the night, it finally comes.

The darkness envelops you, snaking around your legs and eyes as you walk. You feel the heat of the flame and see its glow through the shroud, and the darkness passes away from your sight. You feel a breath on your neck and shoulder, and hear soft words whose meaning you do not understand. You sit at the table, the fire blazing before you, casting sparks into the air that drift down onto the table and out into the darkness. You look, but no scorch marks are on the table, not even where the flame burns hottest. You drink from the chalice in your hand and taste the red wine as it flows over your tongue and down your throat. You feel a hand on yours, and then you wake.

The rest of your journey passes in a similar fashion. You spend your days tending to your wargear, and speaking with your comrades, both old and new, and soon enough the Life of Sanguinius breaks warp into the Eskaton system.

You bid farewell to Ralman and make your way down to the hangar as the frigate enters the planet’s orbit. Your armsman stand there waiting for you, their formation perfectly straight, their armor extra spotless for the occasion.

Every spot of the gunship shines.

You smile softly to yourself and proceed onboard the aircraft, your armsmen following after you. It is indeed a bit of a tight fit for all of you among the racks of ammunition and the power systems for the many guns mounted to the craft.

>>Wear your armor; it is what the people of Eskaton will expect
Space Marines are not Men, at least not to the universe at large. We are what we are, there is no point in trying to hide it by dressing down.
>>
>>39036646
Considering we're seven feet of pale muscle?

I don't think we could hide it if we wanted to.

>>39036640
Helmetless armor sounds good to me, though, retracting my vote for linen.
>>
Captain Short lifts the craft from the hangar deck with barely a jostle, the whine of the engines mild inside. One of the armsman claps his buddy on the back and laughs. “Not like that junker those Guardsman took us in, eh?” He shouts, causing many of them to laugh loudly and nod in agreement.

You smile to yourself, your serfs and the rest of your wargear loaded into a shuttle which will follow you down.

Your armor is pristine, the gold and red shining bright, and the purity seals decorating it flutter softly with your movement. Your helmet you carry under one arm, your power sword and infernus pistol carried at your sides.

You feel the gunship jostle as you enter the atmosphere, and you remember many other orbital descents, few of which were as easy as this one promises to be.

Soon after, you feel Captain Short pull the craft into a graceful landing, and the internal lights flick on as the ramp descends. Your armsmen move smartly out down the ramp and form up on either side of it, rigid and motionless, their hellguns held perfectly still. You shift your shoulders in your armor and walk down the steps of the ramp, a cheer washing over you like a wave of noise as you take your first steps on this new world.

>All right guys! That’s all for this thread. Next session will be this coming Sunday, same time, same place. Any comments you have on how the quest is going would be more than welcome. I’ll get Alaric’s service history posted for you to peruse, and I’ll try to fix the issue with the Heroquest 2 summary sheet. Thanks for playing!

Thanks for running! As in previous thread, I really enjoy your writing. HeroQuest 2 mechanics seems also interesting from what little I've read from >>39032778

Issues: Well, this thread was practically one big exposition. To tell the truth there was not much scheming or stuff to do, no heresy to hide, no people to punch, no creepy creepiness or battling mindfuck.

There was some slow, calm narration though and that was ok. Next thread I hope for more intrigue and options and some plot hooks.
>>
>>39036972
I appreciate the comment. I'll try to make things more interesting from here on. There should be some social combat and intrigue emerging once Alaric gets settled on Eskaton.
>>
>>39037078

I'll be looking towards this Sunday then!

I'll be sure to post updates on twitter. Feel free to leave comments/suggestions/critiques there as well.

Thanks for running. I've not really been posting due to agreeing with the decisions everyone's bee n making, but I just want to voice my enjoyment for this so far.

Not necessarily though, it was a nice read, not much action, but the outline that is so important.

It was a good run, in the same way that introductions from Tolkien are good, even though they are usually +20 pages.
>>
>>39037078
Was Ralma a space marine or just the captain of the ship?
>>
>>39038948
He was addressed as Brother which would make it safe to assume he is a Marine, even if it was not stated earlier. Many chapters have marines in charge of their ships
>>
I just got back from work and caught up, thanks for the thread OP, question for you though, what is the objective/mission we have on this planet and how long will we be staying on it?

>>39038948
He and the other important officers on the ship are astartes, the Blood Angels as one of the Founding chapters have much more forces than they admit to, to get around the 1000 marines limit, they have a very large navy rivaling the Imperial Fists and other First Founding chapters as is their right, they tend to be captained by Astartes, usually with another Astartes officer or two.
