You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

You pick your way through the Scar, keeping a wary eye out for your friends. You just received a text on your Moon Phone from Peter – apparently he’s handed your sample over to his ‘expert’, the guy just needs some time. That’s fine enough, you guess.

Noriko comes into view first, a vague halo of electrical warmth playing about her head. The group are sitting under the shadow of a tumbled apartment complex – they’d be barely noticeable if it weren’t for your heightened senses. You pick out Noriko, Laura, Lucas immediately. The flowing shape next to Lucas is the niqaab girl from earlier, and, sitting a little aside from the others, is a thin, waifish young girl with messy red hair and sharp yellow eyes. She looks at you with a hint of recognition in those orbs, and you realize that she has a familiar scent of wet fur and spittle to her.

“Rahne?”

She opens her mouth to answer, the dim light glinting off rows of disjointed, razor-sharp teeth, and what comes out is something between a gurgle and a cough. She looks down at herself in disappointment, and turns her eyes away.
>>
>(2/2)

You feel a momentary pang of guilt.

“Uh, did I…?”

Niqaab girl shakes her head.

“Rahne has… problems… with her powers.”

“Right…” You don’t press the issue, not now.

Laura watches the girl intently. To her side, Noriko winces a little as Lucas applies a plaster to her knee.

“…Something happen?” You ask, a little bewildered.

Noriko and Lucas take it in turns to explain that they chased off a bunch of guys in weird gremlin-y masks. They didn’t fight back – Noriko notes, with a small note of pride in her voice, that they took off pretty much the moment she started lighting up – but Nori slipped and grazed her knee while running after them.

They were selling Jack, apparently.

Live combat was obviously too much for the poor girl. Too bad it's only going to get worse. We'll need to have a lizard-to-girl talk with her, toughten her up through military training or give her a gun.

I would suggest doing this next time we train with laura, instead of potentially missing things on patrol.

Plus i am fairly sure we don't need to create vibrations for echo.
>>
>>39012235

We don't need to, but I'd like to do it so it's kinda constantly updating the image in his head.
>>
>>39012271
Hmm, fair enough, unless JJ emits a constant chatter while using this power normally.
>>
>>39012235
>Plus i am fairly sure we don't need to create vibrations for echo.
If JJ's echolocation works the same way Daredevil's does then I'm fairly sure he does.

If you re-read the thread where we broke into the Chinese guy's house JJ tapped on the wall to create noise to "see" the whole house.
>>
>>39012323
Then all he needs to do is walk to tap on a floor or wall.
>>
>>39012323
>>39012344
Considering JJ is capable of some insane feats of perception, he is probably good with the normal environment most of the time.

It is cool to know he can both map out the inside of a place and tell the location of each person inside it, and even overhear their conversations.
>>
>>39012323
so the solution is tap shoes?
>>
>>39012344
JJ taskmastered Laura's stealthy walk. His footsteps don't create enough noise for echo. Unless he's actively trying to stomp around.
>>
>[X] Tell the YXM about your agreement with Silvermane.
>[X] "Hey, where's Layla?"
>[X] Do some more patrolling.

Well, they’ve clearly run into some excitement, so you decide to just hang out and rest for a sec. You can’t help notice that someone appears to be missing, though.

“Hey, where’s Layla?”

Smoothing down the plaster on Noriko’s leg, Lucas glances up at you.

“Ah, right.” He shrugs. “She wanted to go back to the station. Kev’s watching her.”

You process that for a second. “Just Kevin? What about”–

The smell of ozone rakes your nostrils, and Gaby teleports in, an electrical flourish running through the air around her. She starts a little at the sight of you. Her gaze moves up to the crown of your head and remains fixed there for a moment, before she seems to compose herself, edging away slightly.

“…T-they’re definitely gone.” She says, before glancing over at you again. “Um, hi, John.”

“Hey.”

You remember Gaby volunteering to go out on these patrols, but you’re a little surprised that she’s actually there.

Well, whatever.

Turning to niqaab girl (man you absolutely cannot remember her name), you make sure she knows about the situation with Silvermane and his extensive ‘family’. Her garb disguises much of her body language, but you notice her eyes widen further and further as you continue to spin your tale.

“…You struck a deal with a gangster?” She says, eventually, as if unsure of what to say otherwise.

You glance over at Rahne. She, for her part, seems far less interested in that.

“It seemed like a good idea at the time.” Is your reply. You clear your throat. “Anyway, we still doing this… patrolling… thing?”

It seems everyone has a bit of motivation left in them. Niqaab girl suggests splitting up into teams, to cover as much ground as possible.

Walk in pairs, so each pair can see at least 2 other pairs.

Efficient comping and stuff.

Or we can just be invisible and fly around. Probably better choice, since we can see better from air, and they are less likely to spot us, than just walking around.
>>

No real way to know whats going on or to reinforce each other should shit go down, best stick together.

There was some distaste for it because of how many hobbies people were trying to shove into JJ
>>
You know, JJ really reminds me of Ciaphas Cain.

In his head he's always silently panicking or hating on himself, but to everyone else (besides the Tunnel Snakes), he looks pretty competent.

Doesn't hurt that he's an obscenely versatile mutant.
>>
>>39012640
I say staying within shouting distance counts as "staying together"
>>
>>39012476
We've got means of tracking down any hints of Jack, so no point in spreading ourselves thin.

I mean covering extra ground is great if you're under attack from multiple fronts or you don't know where enemy is.

However, we've got means of finding them 1 by 1 and forcing them to break into small enough groups that they'll be weak enough to be picked off by desperate muggers, which makes paying for jack pointless.
>>
>>39012662

They don't like him having too many hobbies, but they're okay with the shitload of powers?

Plus the idea is just prime material for a flashback or two.
>>
>>39012476
>>[ ] Yeah that’s efficient you wanna roll with [insert].
JJ, Laura and Gabby could scout around solo, and get back to the group easy enough if they find anything. Maybe Rahne, too, but I don't want to take too much manpower from the core group.
>>
>>39012673
All we need is a side kick who fucks up psychics with his mere presence and could make paint peel from his BO.
>>
>>39012713
That's entirely different though. JJ was 13 when he became a hobo, there's only so many things he could've been interested in.
>>
>>39012719

So... Leech?
>>
>>39012713
Having too many hobbies just ends up being silly, considering the age he was forced out of normal home life. Piano is normal, D&D is fine, but after that your really scratching the barrel for time or suitability for an 11(?) year old.

We might not need a sidekick for that. We already have eye lasers and lizardbutt, so we probably distract nearby psychics anyway.
Then again, our BO problem isn't as bad as it used to be, so eh.
>>
>>39012745
>>39012758

Piano, cooking and swimming when he was younger. Occasionally D&D when his sister needed a 5th player.

Gambling/Magic tricks, and cooking after he left for New York.

Hey Crusty, does Leech even exist in this universe?
>>

We really need someone who can deal with magic and psyonics.
Xavier, or any magic user can fuck us up badly.
>>

Eh, cooking as in "I helped mom and sis bake once" sure, i doubt it was a full blown hobby.

Gambling and magic tricks we picked up with creeps and more recently gambit.

Cooking becomes not a hobby but a necessity after leaving home.

Couldn't JJ just do an invisible fly over of the scar? It would be MUCH faster. Although less thorough.

>[X] NO splitting the party is bad.

…Has niqaab girl never seen a single slasher flick? Does she not realize that your life basically is a gigantic, overly-long, teeth-grindingly terrifying horror movie?

Half an hour and one very short argument later, the seven of you are trailing along through the outskirts of the Scar. You and Laura take up the lead, with Rahne close behind, looking pensive and occasionally growling. You can hear Lucas and niqaab girl talking in hushed tones, and Noriko & Gaby behind them. The night around you is silent save for the crunching of your footfalls and the occasional, distant movement amidst the rubble.

“Gabriella seemed unnerved by your horns.” Says Laura, suddenly.

You sigh quietly, and keep your voice down when you answer: “Yeah, I thought so.”

Behind you, you sense Rahne shuffle awkwardly as if to say something, but she doesn’t follow through. You’re about to turn around and ask her what’s up when a new scent uncoils under your nose, and you find yourself gagging slightly. Smells like… rotten gums and damp fur.

You note the tiniest hint of disgust pass through Laura’s expression, and she sniffs testily at the air. A second later, Rahne sputters a little and Gaby heaves out a long, surprised cough.

Man you guys must look weird to all the non-supersensed-up people.

“Rank.” You note. Rahne nods her head in agreement.

You follow the scent a few yards, into the shadow of an old, broken café. The roof is caved in straight down the center, allowing a slim shaft of moonlight to slip in from above, giving the impression of an immense blade cutting the building in twain along its midsection. Lying just outside, its breath rising and falling in shallow rasps, is an old Jack Russell. A pool of warm, unsavory liquids – some of it blood, some of it something else – extends from its belly. Someone’s drawn a huge, smiley face beneath it in red paint, its mouth set with awkward, overly-long teeth.

Its ears twitch minutely, and one eye rolls toward you.

>[X] Check its injuries.

“Poor thing…” Mutters Gaby, her face aghast – what can be seen of it, anyway. She’s covering her mouth with her hand.

You approach the thing, its eyes – its one good eye, you note, as you get closer – following you as you close the distance. Making sure to stay clear of the blood and… stuff… you kneel down beside it. The smell is overpoweringly bad; despite the thing clearly being alive, it has the scent of something long dead and left out in summer. You immediately notice that there’s something more than just a normal injury here – its belly is soaked in blood, but the wound is like nothing you’ve ever seen.

You frown deeply when you realize what you’re looking it.

It’s full of teeth. Poking through the soft fur on the underside of the dog’s belly is a mesh of twisted, mutilated flesh, pockmarked with ragged, protruding teeth. They twist and curl in strange patterns, flexing as it breathes in and out, as though attached to some partially-formed net of jaw muscles somewhere inside the dog’s skin.

It whines quietly, its eye rolling slowly in its socket, and shifts its head, as though trying to convey some element of its predicament.

And you think you sort of understand.

Three men, but with not-men faces. Hurt its master, took its master, stabbed it with something. Now everything hurts and it can feel itself growing all the wrong things in all the wrong places.

>[X] Alternatively, it’s clearly in a lot of pain…

It looks at you, its throat mute but its eyes full of everything you need to know. You recognize that look – that swarming, utter sense of hopelessness. You understand.

Reaching out, you stroke your hand along the soft fur around its neck, and for a moment in closes its eyes. And, in a single, smooth motion, you extend your claws into scimitars of dark keratin and snap them together. Its head slumps free of its body, eyes the breath fading from its lungs.

You hear people gasp behind you.

“It was in pain.” You explain, not looking back. Your claws hiss slightly as you pull them back into their sheathes, and you note the ring of teeth protruding from the insides of the dog’s neck. Had they continued to grow like that it would have suffocated long before it bled out. “Stay away from the blood. I think someone pumped a whole load of raw Jack into it.”

Making a mental note to warn Peter about this (seems like something his girlfriend would want to know about), you pull yourself up, and notice the dashes of red pain scattered along the ruined counter to the café.

“THE DRAGON HAS TEETH”

“AND THERE IS”

“JUST ONE KING”

“IN THE FOREST”

You feel the hairs on the back of your neck begin to rise.

>[X] Lots.

You think for a moment. The smell curls in your nose.

You glance over at the painted words again. Your head hurts a little.

“Man… this is… entirely distasteful…” You feel your shoulders slump, and turn towards the others. “But could you guys hold this down for a bit? I think we should get a sample of this stuff. And then we should burn it.”

Nobody seems all too enthused at the prospect of hanging around with a disfigured dog corpse for an hour or two. Eventually, Noriko speaks up:

“What’ll you be doing?”

You sigh. “I think I’ll have a quick look around for the guys that did this.”

An uncomfortable silence passes through the group, before Lucas huffs quietly and sits down.

“Whatever. I can watch it.”

“A-and I can get the container!” Volunteers Gaby, obviously very eager to be away from the smell.

The others settle in quietly while Gaby vanishes in a burst of electrical distortion.

Moving swiftly, you dart out into the ruins.

The red words reverberate through your skull, like a mantra torn from the walls of some forgotten kindgom.

It doesn’t take long for you to encounter signs of struggle.

You follow the unfortunate animal’s scent through the rubble, sprinting easily across slopes of rubble and ducking through the shells of broken tenements. Eventually you come to a slight dip, where the ruptured belly of some old novelty store has made a little cubby in the ground. There are traces of fire, and a few loose strips of food packaging scattered about, hinting at habitation.

You can smell the residue of gunshots in the air, and taste the coppery fragrance of blood. You don’t think anyone got shot, though. There are long, thin splatters along a few of the old bricks that suggest someone was simply beaten about the face, probably while being held down.

Kneeling, you run your eyes along the ground, and pick out a few dislodged pieces of tough, dark green matter, almost like loamy bark. It takes you a moment to realize that they’re scales. They don’t appear to be bloodied, though, so you doubt they belonged to the victim here.

You can also smell the dog. Its scent is different back here, more natural. None of that lingering, living decay.

Aside from that, there’s nothing else you can find. Everything just shuts down as you move further away from the site – scents trail off into nothingness.

Grimacing, you turn back.

Rahne is the first one to spot you (technically, smell you) as you make your way back. You hear her head jerk in your direction as you approach the torn-up café. Five pairs of expectant eyes turn towards you as you emerge into the moonlight, and you just shake your head.

>[X] Sleeep.

It doesn’t take Noriko long to get the corpse burning. You watch it flicker and roar from afar, a plume of dark, noxious smoke rising up through the night, seeming to evaporate out into the dark. You imagine it as a soul expanding into a vast void, dissipating until it cannot be told whether it vanishes into the emptiness, or becomes a part of it.

You ask niqaab girl to make sure Jono gets your message. She doesn’t look all too thrilled about it, but she promises to do so. Remembering Julian and his lot, you send him a quick text.

The night is clouded over when you return. Gaby is curled up with Layla, apparently having ‘ported back shortly after returning to the scene with a jar. Your sample of noxious fluids – the second you’ve collected this week – sits beside the ashes of the fire. You hear Noriko stretch and yawn as you descend the last few steps into the station, and then, everything is a blur.

You crash down into your tent, barely aware of Laura nestling in beside you. You fold your arm over her, but it’s more reflexive than anything else.

Sleep takes you.

You dream of red words and redder skies. A grove opens out in the forest, and over it, the moon hangs in sacred silence, watching impassively as the world below struggles and starts and grows.
The next morning, you awaken feeling strangely energetic.

You emerge from your tent early(ish), and quietly rummage through your dwindling supplies for something to eat. As the stove bubbles, a thick miasma of chicken and herbs rising from the mixture within, Layla crawls out of her tent, her hair skewed across one side of her head like an errant glacial formation – undoubtedly the result of sleeping in some awkward position.

She nods to you, mumbling a little sullenly, and asks you if she can have some of what you’re eating. She can.

>[X] Talk to Gaby and Layla.

Things are mostly quiet while you munch down your food. Layla nibbles at her chicken in silence, her eyes downcast. You sense that something’s amiss.

“Hey. You okay?”

Starting slightly, she glances up at you, before taking on a surely, cross-legged posture and returning to her meal.

“Fine.” She answers, clearly determined to keep to monosyllables.

“Okay.” Hmmm. You think. What kinds of things does Layla like? “I learned I can speak Dog yesterday.”

She pauses in mid-bite.

“…Really?”

You nod sincerely.

“You sure there isn’t something wrong?”

She seems to think about it for a moment, her eyes squinting slightly, before she sets down her bowl. Her hands move up to her arms to hug them close, like they used to do when you first met her.

“I dunno.” She mumbles, pulling her knees in, hiding her lower face behind them. “I guess… I mean, you said that people would hate me if I was like you, but I didn’t… I didn’t think it’d be like that.” She bites her lip slightly and rests her head along one knee. “You think anyone saw me? My face?”

Ah.

“You know, I’m pretty sure they didn’t.” Shifting along, you move beside her. She hugs her knees tighter. “I’m pretty sure they were looking at the guy beating them up.”

She doesn’t respond for a while. When she does, her voice chokes slightly.

“I didn’t think anyone would just… tell on us like that.” She sniffs quietly. “Is that what it’s always like?”

Sentinels would crack down almost immediately. There's no real counter for those aside from sufficient force.
>>
>[X] No, but you have to assume it will be.

“Well, no… not exactly…” You scrabble furiously for the words. To be honest, you’re not sure they exist – sometimes, most of the time actually, it is like that, and you just have to suck up and deal with it. But you’re not sure you want to be saying that, not just now. “But you kinda have to assume thing will be. Because if they are, you have to be ready.”

The troubled look on Layla’s face doesn’t ease up.

“That sounds hard.” She says.

You nod. “It is. Buuuuuut”… You grin slightly, and rest a palm on her shoulder. “…it should be a lot easier for you. You don’t look awesome like me an’ Gaby, after all.”

She smiles slightly, and you feel her head come to rest under your arm, near your ribs. You just sit there for a little while.

“Thanks.”

>If you need both why would you buy telescopic first?

Because there are many more useful applications for having eagle vision than there are for having more powerful eye beams. One of JJ's greatest strengths are his perceptive powers, and Telescopic Vision quite literally magnifies that by several orders of magnitude.

Sure. but considering he can just drop and reinvis well before any anti aircraft weapon has a lock, not to mention break that lock if it does occur as soon as he reinvis's. move, shoot, re cloak, repeat.

Not to mention he could blow up the anti air while hes at this. Though if we got the shadow field/blurr thing it would make life allot easier doing this since it would make targeting central mass a pain in the ass.

It would be cool but I'd prioritize shadow field and wings 3 before going full on aerial sniper.

Plus taser hands level 3 can short out armored electronics. Stuff like War Machine and Doc Ocs tentacles.
>>
>>39017438

Peter, Gwen and Ben Urich don't count?

Well, Ben might not since we just met him once.

Though I do like the idea of some normal, possibly outcast, kid being good friend with the Tunnel Snakes.

>>39017440
>Stuff like War Machine and Doc Ocs tentacles.

I don't think it's that powerful. We'll most likely need higher levels for that stuff.

That's the idea, though.

Wings 3, Shadow field, telescopic zoom and optics. Basically make JJ into a one man mobile Air denial zone miles in diameter with no known counters.

Shit, My fae law might be a little rusty. But if that statement was left by Oberron or his cronies, doesn't that mean he recognizes us as a legitimate threat to his rule? And if so, does that men if we beat him that we become king of the fae?
>>
>>39017504

He's not a mutant.

Therefore, flatscan.
>>
>>39017498

Mah nigga, those are all my top picks for powers.

I wonder how many of them we'll be able to pick up before Tier 3 Powers get revealed and the power-sperging to end all power-sperging begins?
>>
>>39017504
Peter is a Mutate or something, people who artificially get there powers no X-gene action.
>>
>>39017534
We need to prioritize getting all the good extrapolates now instead of upgrades so that doesn't happen.
>>
>>39017517

It's not from Oberon/Loki, it's from Typhon or someone working for/with him.
>>
>>39017504

JJ thinks Peter's a mutant, because he saw him do a thing
>>
>>39017534

From what answers I've gotten on Crusty's Ask.fm, most Tier 3 powers can start fires. Not intentionally, but as a potential side effect.
>>
>>39017540
okay, so he doesn't have an active x-gene, but I wouldn't consider him a 'flatscan' in the colloquial sense, and most people wouldn't either.
>>
>>39017476
>>39017479
ok, maybe I should rephrase that.

I was thinking more of a character who also hangs out with us, but is in now way a mutant, nor would they have any abilities. Just a normal human.

I guess Ben and Gwen would count, but we don't see much of them.
>>
>>39017593

I'd like that too.

Crusty said in the ask that it would damage War Machine. It just wouldn't do very much damage. Maybe the targeting system gets a little buggy/less accurate or the communications goes out for a few minutes.
>>
>>39017623
It's kind of funny how interested anons are in Moon Knight. I mean, I'm all for being Lunar Lizard, it's just a neat twist to see people considering being an ally to him
>>
>>39017590
>but I wouldn't consider him a 'flatscan' in the colloquial sense, and most people wouldn't either.

Yes they would.

Flatscan literally means that your X-Gene scan doesn't do anything. It's flat.

Flatscan. Peter has no X-Gene, or an active one, so he's a flatscan.

>>39017625

Who says we'll keep the X-Points we have banked at that point?

>>39017636

I may have missed and/or forgotten that one.
>>
>>39017593
Well, we could rescue an orphan or something again?

Worked with Layla, easy way to get a token normalfag.

Otherwise I don't see how we'd get them to stay around us. We're sort of freaky yo.

Best solution would clearly be someone who's a mutie fetishist or fanboy or something, though. Gives them a reason to want to talk to us and they can be overwhelmingly positve about all our freaky shit.
