October 22, UC 0084.

The Columbus class is not a design that was ever meant to be comfortable for its crew. The quarters are spartan at best, the food is miserable, and there's a weird smell in a lot of the hallways like dirty gym socks. But there is a definite upside to this arrangement: when you and your team arrive at the Titans-operated weapons platform at the Earth-Sol L1 Lagrange point, none of the security are likely to know who you are or why you're there.

For the last several days your repair teams have been working around the clock to modify your mobile suit compliment, to astounding results. You really do need to remember to congratulate them officially when this battle is over.

Your own two machines are finely-tuned and fully loaded for sustained maneuver warfare, ready to launch at a moment's notice. The new beam shield units on their arms have been calibrated and tested: you're not sure how they'll fare in combat, but on paper they're sound. The Mk II has been slightly modified with the expectation of fighting within a formation of warships, meaning that more focus will be placed on its defensive capabilities. The Kämpfer is gone now, replaced with a hybrid of its parts and the damaged Marasai you captured at Leipzig. The Val Varo takes up its own hangar, and has been modified to work in tandem with one of the Tusche Scwarzes.

The latter three suits have been upgraded as well, of course: new, longer bits hang off their backpacks, each putting out as much power as a beam rifle rather than the smaller weapons they used to use. They even carry a few deflector bits mixed in, with beam cannons on the shoulders that have been reduced in size. But the biggest alteration has been to the base machines themselves, whose thrusters have been reduced in size and number. They can't hover in atmosphere anymore, but the massive reduction in weight has left them faster and slimmer than before. Though the finish is imperfect, with weld lines still visible on the unpainted sections of their bodies, the changes are enough to warrant a new name: Qubeley.

“How can you be so calm right now?” Haman frowns, surprised that Carrina can simply be sitting in your cramped ready room in apparent relaxation. For their part the sisters have had their eye shut for a few hours, simply sitting in their combined silence. You'd almost think she was napping if you couldn't sense that she was awake.

Carrina doesn't move an inch. “So you'd prefer it if I were panicking?” she asks, her tone almost flat aside from the slight sarcastic edge. “Oh no, Titans has numerical superiority, we're all doomed, woe is me, everything is hopeless forever. Did that make you feel better?”

“No,” Haman admits. “But still, they outnumber us at least five to one, even without their capital ships. Doesn't that affect you at all?”

Carrina's good eye slides open. “The more enemies we cut down in the moment of surprise, the less their initial advantage will mean. Focus on making the most of that moment, and you'll have no time left for worrying.”

>She's right, Haman. All worrying will do is hold you back.

Our focus should be on how to capitalize on the chaos we create. The initial attack plan is sound, it's what comes after that's going to be difficult. We can't leave Six Shooter intact to rebuild, whatever happens we need to make sure the damage is permanent.

"It's tried and true Blitzkrieg. Hit fast, hit hard, and leave your enemy reeling. Once we're in, all we'll haft to do is head for the giant floating gun in space and shoot it. It might not be destroyed, but it'll be knocked out of commission for months while we have more time. And time is what we need more than anything now"

You almost certainly can't do that. Nukes don't go off by accident.

anyone dumb enough to have a nuclear explosion triggerable by anything connected to the internet deserves to die a horrible death.
>>
>>38992237
It's actually a pretty interesting topic in the field of nuclear deployment. You can't increase the amount of damage done to a target by firing more nukes at it, since the first one to hit will just destroy the others. The reason nuclear deployment strategy calls for the use of multiple warheads at a single target it for redundancy, in case some of them get shot down. If you want to deal more damage you need to increase the payload of the warhead itself. But since that increases mass, it limits how many you can deploy per launch vehicle. It makes for some interesting math on the cost-benefit analysis.
>>
>>38992277
Worst comes to worst, do what Bright did at CCA. Spam nuke missiles first, then if that doesn't work, detonate a nuke level explosion inside even if it takes using just junior MS.

These are the Titans we're talking about here, mate.
I wouldn't be surprised if the nukes are password protected, and the password is "password".

"Come on, Haman," you interrupt, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder, "this is the kind of stuff you're good at, right? Focus on coming up with a plan to capitalize on our attack."

Haman seems to take a few moments to calm herself down, and gradually slips into a more contemplative mood. "Yes... we need to wait until the Remnants strike. How far behind us did ALICE suggest they were?"

"Not far," Carrina muses. "They were going to slingshot around the moon and do a hard retro-burn to decelerate as late as possible. Or at least that's what Karen and Defrah agreed they'd do in Ronan's place."

"So that means we need to keep our cargo hidden until that point," you point out. "Any idea how we do that?"

"We have a boarding team," Haman points out. "Strictly speaking we don't have to wait for anything."

"That sounds risky," Audrey replies, brushing a few strands of hair out of her face as she takes a seat nearby. "Draws attention from the Titans fleet too, if word gets out."

"It also commits us," Rossweisse adds. "We wouldn't be able to withdraw them quickly."

"But," Carrina muses, "it could get us control over those nukes in case the station's completed faster than Cima's intel indicated."

"Then there's the issue of what happens after we sortie," Haman continues. "Do we stay close to the station, or get into close quarters with one of the fleets?"

Emma shrugs. "Could set up a nasty crossfire situation for the Titans ships."

"But it does nothing to stop the Remnants from firing at us," Rossweisse counters.

Well, then. You're the one in charge of this insane mission.

Use the cover of the fleets' melee to infiltrate the coil gun. We're a spec ops team, after all. This is our forte. As Haman so graciously pointed out, it'll be 5-to-1 odds. Gettings into that brawl, even with our superior machines, is suicidal. They'll bleed us to death.

"We'll hold back at first," you eventually decide. "As for where we go from here, I think we stand a good chance getting up close with the Titans fleet."

"You what now?" Emma asks, nonplussed. "Why the hell wouldn't we use the station itself as cover?"

You nod, having anticipated the question. "You or I probably wouldn't want to fire on the station if our positions were reversed with Voight's... but he doesn't have our kind of resources."

"Even if he won he has to know he can't hold the station," Carrina muses, quickly grasping your logic. "So you're betting he'd rather blow the station to kingdom come right from the start."

Haman grins in apparent agreement. "Bask Om may have power, but he'll probably fall into the same trap you did, Miss Sheen. But not because he isn't familiar with the Remnants... instead, his downfall will be that he simply can't see far enough beyond his own ambitions to understand how anyone could not share them."

"So that settles it," you conclude. "Keep in constant contact and keep your eyes open, and wait for my signal."

The deployment of the laser ablation array Riah provided. It'd make for a good opening salvo to even the playing field for a bit, if the effect is somewhere close to the last super weapon the remnants used on us.

>Any other issues or questions?
What's the range of the laser array Riah loaned us? It sounds like a phased array system, so it would have a huge effective aperture size, but it depends on the wavelength used. Can it reach?
>>
>>38993247
>>38993353
In canon at least, it's a barrage that wouldn't work against ships. So it's pretty clearly intended as cleanup for when you're done, so you don't have to waste resources defending the station against counterattack.

As for using it early, there are a lot of people on that station who would die pointlessly if you opened with a laser barrage, and that's not really how you and your team have ever worked in the past.
>>
>>38993431
Alright then.

Well, the only other issue I can think of at the moment is releasing the info we gathered about Stardust and the Titan leadership's role in it to demoralize the Titans factions fighting there, but I'm guessing only the most fanatical troops are present so it's probably not gonna be an effective measure.
I reckon Kowen would make use of the info better for his side of the battle in Gryps anyway.
>>
>>38993431
So what's the plan for getting those people off the station before we scuttle it?
>>
>>38993594
I am more worried about the number of shots it is capable of storing in those batteries. It's purpose is to redirect incoming meteorites from threatening the colony cluster. Someone takes the opportunity to redirect a couple rocks while those defenses are down...
>>
>>38993695
The bigger headache would be fetching every drifting body. There's enough O2 in a your modern astronaut suit to last 6 to 8 hours. Everyone would suit up when the general quarters bell rings anyway. So, when the evacuation word goes out, they'll be jumping station in droves.
>>
>>38993152
As your teams file out, you take one last look at the expected numbers involved here.

Based on long-range scans from the Nagato's Minovsky Searcher, you can expect the Titans fleet at the station to consist of at least three of the EFSF's new fleet escort carriers, two Salamis-kai class cruisers, and two of the more modern Alexandria class ships. That includes Bask Om's personal flagship, the Leningrad, named for what's probably still the bloodiest single engagement in human history. Tasteless of him, but you've come to expect that. Between the ships you expect 32 mobile suits of unknown type and configuration, but it's a safe bet those will mostly be a cut above average even for Titans.

The station's defense teams seem to number nine suits, three of which possess reactors whose output is greater than the combined output of each of your Lilium-type machines. Exactly what those belong to or what they're capable of is anyone's guess.

That brings the total force deployment for Titans up to 41 mobile suits, three carriers, and four cruisers, plus the stationary emplacements on the station.

As for Voight's striking force, the man's left little behind: three Musais, each with at least four MS aboard them. There's also his personal flagship, one of the last two remaining Gwazines in the Earth Sphere, which carries an additional 20 mobile suits. That gives him 32 machines, likely the best he has with veteran pilots at the stick, with three cruisers and a battleship.

In total, this engagement will involve more than eighty mobile suits and ten capital ships, bringing it nearly to the scale of the Battle of Odessa during the war... and out of them, all but seven mobile weapons are your enemies.

Carrina gives you a sympathetic look as you toss the number sheets to the floor.

Fuck it. All that means is you'd just have to bag 10 kills each, even if they were all focused on you. Piece of cake, right?

It only takes another hour to start your approach to the station, at which point you're called to the bridge. Catharine and Reiko are handling most of the shipboard operations, with Noel and Miyu standing by as your operators. When the time comes it'll take all four of them to coordinate with you and your teammates.

"Sir, we're being hailed by the station," Reiko informs you. "Shall I put them through?"

You nods. "Of course. Everyone got your uniforms looking just right?"

All around you your personnel nod, looking their normal suits a once-over for anything that could identify them as Grim Guard members and blow your cover.

"Alright then, let's get this show on the road."

The image of a dour man with a silly looking mustache greets you: a Lieutenant with Titans, which given their elevated rank equivalents puts him just below your assumed identity on the totem pole.

Perfect.

"State your business!" the man insists, his voice annoyingly nasally.

You shake your head. "I'm sorry, Lieutenant," you reply, emphasizing his rank, "but I'm not at liberty to divulge my cargo manifest to you."

"Perhaps I should call my superiors, then?" he presses, clearly trying to intimidate you.

“Come on, El-Tee,” you tell him, suddenly changing your tone to something more reconciliatory. “I know better than to ask what any of this stuff is, I just take it from point A to point B. This is our last delivery on this deployment before I get to go home... I just wanna get paid.”

“That's not...” the Lieutenant frowns, but you continue.

“You wanna know where home is for me, Lieutenant? I live in a one-room apartment, cause I can't afford anything else. My wife divorced me last year and took our kid, the car, and my dog. That was MY dog! She took MY DOG! She HATES that dog!” you begin to gradually pretend to lose your composure, starting to gesture wildly as your voice rises. “Half my pay goes for child support for a kid I'm not even allowed to see! I just wanna drop all this shit off and go on my way already, Lieutenant. I don't care what it is, and I don't wanna know... so just throw me a bone, would ya? Have a heart!”

“Okay, okay!” the Lieutenant replies desperately. “You can drop your cargo off, just... stop reminding me of depressing shit already!”

The whole bridge on your end sits in stunned silence as the Lieutenant gives you docking clearance and approach instructions. “Good luck, Captain... Annus,” the man offers before ending the call.

“The hell did I just watch?” Miyu asks in confusion.

You shrug. “He's middle-management at a glorified port authority. His life probably sucks, so I built on that.”

"Man, you Newtypes are crazy sometimes," Catharine shrugs.

Reiko raises an eyebrow. "Sometimes?"

When you finally dock at the station, you make sure that "Captain Seymour Annus" is out in front dealing with the paperwork. It doesn't take all that long really, just standard procedure bureaucracy, and you can pretty much fill in all the answers you think Titans would find the least suspicious. After all, there's no real penalty for perjury here.

"Ah, balls," you mutter as you pretend to lose your grip on the pencil in your hand, sending it spinning straight for the Titans officer you spotted. "Sorry, pal, I'll be right back."

Making sure to give your writing implement a head start, you push off the deck and pretend to lose your attitude control: anyone who's ever met you could tell you're bullshitting right now, but to the untrained eye it looks like a simple mistake by the flustered Captain of a transport vessel.

To her credit, the young woman manages to catch you and arrest your momentum quite well.

"Hey, thanks, miss!" you tell her loudly before muttering a quick introduction.

"Captain Dom O'Hara, who're you?"

"Pharaoh," she replies, quietly. "Moaur Pharaoh. I was in Jerid Messa's squad."

"Ah, so this is where he ended up," you muse. "Why haven't you ratted on us?"

"It's..." Mouar struggles, a wave of guilt washing over her, "it was our fault. We couldn't support him at Leipzig... and when he hit the ground..."

"Something happened with his head," you conclude. "Amnesia?"

Mouar nods. "I joined his team because I thought he could reform Titans, but now... he can still pilot, but his mind is so badly confused. He doesn't even know why he's fighting anymore."

"So what are you doing here?"

She smiles gloomily, trying to maintain composure. "Whatever I can. But when I saw you, I started wondering. I mean, I still hate that your bitch of a friend did this to him... but he shouldn't be on the battlefield anymore."

"If miss Lila and I could get Jerid down here, could you get us out of Titans? Please, I'm begging you..."

At this point, the young woman is having trouble even speaking. You can see tears starting to form in her eyes, and if there's any duplicity here she's unaware of it.

Mouar nods impatiently. “Well yeah, that's what you do. Isn't it?”

You look around quickly to ensure nobody's paying the bumbling Captain Annus any attention before looking Mouar straight in the eyes. “A Zeek fleet is on its way here. The young woman looks hopeful. “You're here to help fight them off, right?”

“No favorites this time,” you shake your head. “This time everyone's getting beaten down.”

Though she seems uncomfortable at the thought, Mouar Pharaoh eventually decides that you're the best shot she and Jerid have of surviving the rest of the day. Before she leaves, she tells you one last thing.

“You heard of the Iota Gundams before you turned traitor?”

You shrug. “Those three powerful machines we detected here?”

“They're Gundams designed to counter your own Liliums,” she explains. “Lila's gonna destroy Jerid's. It'll give you a better shot at winning this fight if one or more of the Iotas is out of it.”

“Thanks,” you reply. “Just make sure to get here quick. We're not stopping for anything, you included.”

When she nods in understanding, you kick away backwards, turning in the air with a more characteristically unnatural grace as you drift back to the docking hatch. Once there you inform your security team of the new side objective, and briefly review the protocol for holding the dock area against possible Titans security counterattacking.

True to the warning you gave Mouar, it's not long at all before klaxons begin to sound and you rush to your mobile suit.

Iota Gundam...also known as "S Gundam". Fuck. Well, here's hoping they don't have their own copy of ALICE.

We need to keep the element of surprise. See what these Iota Gundams can do.
>Other?
Query Alice. Any information or weaknesses on the Iota Gundams?

I feel if we wait it out, we could get wrecked hard if the wrong group remains.
>>
>>38996675
Why? I thought the strategy is for both sides to exhaust each other first.

>>38996699
Wait, this is a good point. Have the Iota Gundams deployed?
>>
>>38996670
ALICE is tucked away aboard the Nagato, she's in charge of your shooting and shit.

Also, roll me a 1d6. Taking the average of the first three, since it's an unusual circumstance. Let's just say Lila's channeling her inner Wufei.

Trying to go Gundam-jacking during a combat scramble would be a VERY bad idea, especially since you don't know which Gundam Lila's blowing the fuck up.

i just have a feeling that taking the "safe option" might be a trap

I believe not. Mouar going destroy one out of three.

About 4-ish. Pretty fucking good.

And no, it's more Wufei's general attitude of "fuck these pilots in particular".
>>
>>38996786
Can we use our newtype powers to contact her and coordinate which ones to gunjack? I'm just tossing this one in the wind...
>>
>>38996871
Imma say no. One, she's not a Newtype, which makes it exponentially harder to telepathy her. Two, she's focused on Jerid to the near-exclusion of all else. Three, there's a lot of empty space in that particular section of the station right now, and she wasn't wearing a suit.
>>
>>38996951
Ok, just checking.

Can we steal Titan uniforms and plant explosives in places? Or this is probably too risky?
>>
>>38997012
we are wearing titan uniforms
>>
>>38996553
By my count holding off for a moment or two wins.

This next update will initiate combat, and unfortunately that'll have to be it for tonight. I needed to break it up like this so that I could work on my notes in-between sessions and plan out a series of maneuvers and shit. Otherwise having 80-some mechs operating in some semblance of a believably realistic fashion would just be impossible.
>>
>>38997062
That's part of the reason I voted for waiting. Shave off a couple dozen or so MS that the characters, players, and you won't have to worry about at the initial engagement before Dom's team joins the fray.
>>
>>38997062
>>38997199
Yeah, let those 80-some MS thin themselves out.

But we do need to focus the Gundams when it's time.
>>
>>38997259
Iota Gundams I want one!
>>
>>38996553
The whole station rocks slightly as somewhere in the distance you feel an explosion: not one from outside, but one originating within the station itself. On your sensors one of the three “Iota” Gundams disappears along with four of what were presumably its escorts.

That's four down already.

“Jesus,” Haman mutters as your targets continue to dance across the screen, testing each other out before finally committing to battle.

You open your comms. “Alright, that's it. Stealth screen up on my mark.”

“Acknowledged,” Carrina responds. “Waiting on your mark.”

“Mark.”

Very suddenly you see a shift in the maneuvering targets on your display: their movements become less coordinated, and any formation greater than the squad level disappears as it becomes impossible to tell Zeon apart from Titans. The first few of the mobile suits start winking out on your HUD.

“Reiko, cast off and get out of the AO,” you order. “Everyone else, find some cover among the Titans fleet but consider yourselves weapons-free. I repeat, fire at your discretion.”

“Captain, the outbound corridor is clear!” Noel reports. “Blowing the hatch on your word!”

“Do it,” you insist.

You're rewarded with a jolt as the internal oxygen in your suit's little cargo bay blasts out into the void, where you can see the lights of dozens of thrusters darting back and forth. Beams of energy sizzle in total silence as the capital ships take potshots at each other. Trails of unburned propellant show you where missiles are tracking... thankfully nobody realizes you're here yet or they'd be tracking towards you.

>>
>>38997500
So it is. I didn't notice that. But the next 3d10 doesn't beat the C, so it's still a "Damn"
>>
>>38997391
"Did you see that?" Haman shouts.

You can't say you did. "Haman. You're gonna have to be a LITTLE more specific!" you chide her, rolling your machine into position to fire on what looks like a modified GM with one of your hyper rifles. You blast its leg off, and it reels about trying to figure out where the fire is coming from until a shot from a Gelgoog of some sort finishes what you started.

Of course Rossweisse puts a round into its cockpit after that, so his victory is short-lived.

Haman continues to shout. "Audrey, one of those missiles changed its course! It tracked its target!"

"That's impossible!" Audrey shouts back. "No conventional systems can work for kilometers around!"

You hear a message come across from Cynthia. "I saw it too... some of these Titans machines seem to be breaking the rules, but I can't sense any Newtypes out here!"

"It's just us," Carrina replies, narrowly dodging a shower of shrapnel from a damaged GM-Sniper as it spirals out of control towards the Titans battle line. "So what... what the hell did Titans do?"

"That thought's gonna have to wait!" you shout. "The two Iotas are inbound our location!"

This time, you get the distinct impression you're gonna have to earn your pay for once. And it's NOT going to be easy...
>>
>>38997567
I'm so confused by this dice system.
>>
>>38997607
Shit, did they finally develop those AI-steered optical guidance systems that get popular later in the UC timeline? Damn.
>>
>>38997607
>>38997682
Heh, everything is accelerated in this timeline.
>>
>>38997609
It's 3d10 against a target unless I say otherwise. A vote with two rolls meeting the target is a pass, three rolls meeting it is a crit success, one roll meeting is a failure, no rolls meeting is a critfail. Best of either three or four rolls as I feel is appropriate.

>>38997607
And that's where I'm going to have to end for now. Thread's archived, and thanks for playing! Tomorrow we'll pick up where we left off, same time same station.

Sorry for the short run. I'd intended to go another hour or maybe even two, but my head's killing me and I need to reorder my notes anyway. So now's as good a point as any.
>>
>>38997682
Oh, it's so much cleverer than that. I'm so sad you didn't hit that DC so I have to wait till tomorrow to spill the beans.
>>
>>38997722
It's fine, Hearts, you've been under the weather lately. Go get some rest. Thanks for running, and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.
>>
>>38997722
Around the same time tomorrow?
>>
>>38997722
Right then. Thanks!
And now we'll see if the Shrike curse sticks even with such a offhand connection.

>>38997749
Cyber Newtype brains in a missile then?
>>
>>38997749
Aww, you tease. Okay, what other sorts of tracking systems could they use? There's only so many things you can home in on when Minovsky particles are around. Heat, optical guidance, Minovsky particle emission itself, and brainwaves. That's pretty much it, I think. Hearts said it's not optical, heat seems unlikely, so it's either a passive brainwave detector that doesn't require a Newtype or they're homing in on active M-particle sources like reactors (or our jamming systems, so I hope it's not that one). Either way, that's an impressive technological advancement.
>>
>>38997757
It's probably just bad eyestrain, but thanks.
>>
>>38998029
Well, get well soon!
>>
I just have to say that I fucking hate this new rolling system. I miss the old d100.
>>
>>39000184
I kind of agree. The Sith Apprentice system isn't really good but I guess QMs like it because there's a more realistic chance of failure even with the best of 3 rolls. I prefer the Banished Quest style of rolling if using d10s.
>>
Try f.lux , king...helped me alot with my eyestrain. Just install it set the timer and prepare your eyennus for relaxation.
