You dream that your tail fell off. Just squeezed off and fell in the dirt and forever after you were forced to walk upright like an elf. You walk through the swamp and the living room and frogs say questionable things about your lineage behind webbed fingers. Cats gathered around to eat the remains of your tail and won't stop so you could put it back on no matter how hard you try. Then they catch on fire and you can't even get close to them. Smokey the bear commends you for donating your tail to fire safety and you're too scared to tell him you actually wanted that back.

Wakefulness seeps into you and you come to the conclusion that your tail is still firmly attached. Tails that aren't attached just don't hurt this much. You have it on good authority from a wily dwarf gecko of your acquaintance.

You take a breath and then sneeze it back out. The odor is terrible. It's like... well actually it smells kinda like that old healer lizard's hut except with a dash of rancid swamp. This is not an improvement. Eyes open, it even looks like the inside of the healer hut. A quick glance around finds your brother picking at his scab bandage, an older looking lizard who is not big shuffling around throwing things in a pot that bubbles menacingly. And a firmly attached tail which is currently screaming the pain song.

The adult lizard notices your waking and approaches, "Hello, How are you feelings?"

"Why is everything hurting?" you moan piteously

"Everything?" the lizard... it's a lady, you pick out through the haze of pain, seems surprised.

"Mostly my tail," you admit. "Can only really feel my tail, honestly."

"Hm," the lizard taps her claws to her lips and hums, "Yes your brother mentioned you dids something to your tail. Then you fells out of a tree. Which seems like an odd thing to do. Can you move your tail."

You twitch your tail and it moves, and then your nearly white out again when the tail protests the action. "Ow. I don't think falling out of a tree was intentional. Ow."

"I meants doing first aid in a tree," she replies, "What kind of stupid thing is squeezing everything, what if you had a broken bone?"

"Is... is that not how you check for broken bones?"

She flicks your head, "Of course not. If you can move it and it doesn't hurt bad until you finish moving it isn't broken."

You hadn't really paid attention to the arrival time of the pain. Just the arrival.

She quickly takes hold of the base of your tail, and before you can blush or protest whips it in a spiral motion. You feel a pop and an immediate lessening of pain. Some of it must of shown in your expression since the lizard nods knowingly and turns back to her pot.

"You probably just jammed it the first times then pushed something out of place while it was still tender," she says, stirring the pot, "You'll be fines."

"Uh, thanks," you say, standing and experimentally waving your tail. It doesn't snap off or split in two so it's probably fine. A little sore. "Where are we? And how'd we get here?"

"Hm? Oh, yes. Introductions," the lizard turns back to yuo and bobs her head politely, "I am Rana, a locals healer. Your brother let out an aid signal some hunters heard and brought you to me. What are your names?"

You walk over to your brother and smack his hand away to make him stop picking at the bandage. "Don't have names," you explain, "Mom didn't come home yet."
[1/2]
>>
>>38989464
[2/2]
"Your don't have names because your mother hasn't been home? That's no reason to wait on giving names," the lizard says irritably, "Who is your mother?"

"Kasha?" you look at your brother questioningly and he bobs in the the affirmative, "Kasha. Mom's name is Kasha."

Comprehension dawns in Rana and she nods sagely. "I take it back. If she wants to name you then waiting is a very good idea. I know you mother, she's good people. Everyone owes her something so I won't ask anything for healing. It was a simple fix anyway."

"How far off course are we?" you ask your brother.

He shrugs, "Not far. Had to walk an hour to gets here. Then you took a while to wakes up. She added more powder." He indicates his arm and you notice the bandage is slightly wider than it was.

"You were the one who did that, right?" the lizard asks, "For long wounds you need to make the bandage wider to hold the skin together better. For round patches you make the bandage deeper to prevent infection." You file that tidbit away. "If you're planning to be a healer then you should get started soon. It's a hard job and there's lots to learn. Not much time for other things. Especially if you make your own medicines."

"Is that what you're making?" you ask her.

"What this?" she ladles up something from the pot, "No this is dinner." You see little eyes floating in the broth. She's either a very bad cook or a very good cook. You're scared to find out which.

"What was that thing you did with m- my tail?" you ask, feeling slightly embarassed as you remember the way you were handled. Even if it was done in clinical way.

"Hm? Oh that's a trick you can do with most joints. Takes a lot of practice and a long time to learn though. If you do it wrong it can actually do more damage than it helps fix," Rana explains casually.

That didn't work. You try a different tactic. "What's the right way to check for injuries like bones and stuff?"

The open ended question seems to serve its purpose masterfully as Rana begins spilling the secrets of diagnosing things. You pick up a bit about muscular and skeletal damage and she transitions into the different kinds of poisons you commonly and their effects on the body, which can mimic normal damage or cause it. Near the end she touches on antidotes as she starts sampling from her pot.

"Can we try that?" you ask, eyes wide and stomach empty staring longingly at the pot. You can feel your brother nearby standing similarly.

"You want to?" she smiles and you feel an ounce of trepidation as she holds the spoon out to you.

As you draw near the spoon you catch a glance of your brother staring intently at you. He doesn't look jealous. More like he's trying to silently communicate using only his eyes. What's that about?

You take a mouthful of the stew and suddenly are staring at the cieling. Rana is standing over you looking down somewhat forlorn.

"That bad?"

You're not sure what she's talking about. Her food? You don't remember anything after getting a mouthful. There is a hideous aftertaste in your mouth though so you have some idea what happened. You try to say something about it being so good you passed out but she doesn't appear to believe you.

"It's so odd. I think it's tasty," she says, taking another bite. You gawk. Nearby your brother also gawks.

"So... You know our mom? Has she been here recently?" you ask, desperately wanting to change the subject from the nightmare that is her cooking.

"Oh my yes. We have her come by whenever the Komodo tries to expand its territory. She just bops it on the nose and off it goes," she laughs, "She hasn't been by lately though. Pity, I told her I'd have a supersized version of my special biscuits ready for her next visit."

You feel like you've learned a lot about your mother. She is clearly a wise woman for avoiding this place. Sadly that also means this is the worst place to be for trying to meet up with her. You thank Rana again for her hospitality and explain that you really need to get going. She offers to pack you a lunch, but you politely decline, citing concerns with the weight of existing gear and a surfeit of existing travelling food.

Getting gone never felt so good. Your brother takes the lead and guides you back to the water path you were on earlier. Together you manage to find a log that is roughly the same size as the one you used earlier. It's not quite as nice, but you think you'll live without extra seating for half a dozen giant rats.

Getting it into the water proves difficult but not impossible. The first log your brother found was so deep in mud you had to give up on it without even trying. Eventually though you manage to get into the water and get going.

The current is with you but appears to be weakening in strength as you go. The path you're on is also widening. In a while you'll probably be paddling through a patch of open swamp water.

Periodically you hear noises from the sides as things make a racket in the bushes. Your major complication though is a bird big enough that it could probably carry you AND your brother off, keeps landing in nearby trees and letting out a noise that sounds enough like laughter to piss you off. If you were closer to shore you'd totally throw a rock at it.

A quick consultation with your brother decides that you'll find a hole to sleep in now. You easily maneuver the log back to the side. You also easily discover that the berm on this section of the water path is utterly resistant to your attempts to dig burrows. It crumbles as soon as you put claws to it.

After poking at several spots on the bank you determine two things. One, moving dirt without your shield to use as a makeshift shovel sucks. You miss your shield. It smelled like crab. And two, screw this section of earth in particular. You quickly collect your brother and set out to swamp again. If this area isn't good for sleeping you'll try someplace further on. There's no current anymore, but you'll get by on your single lizard engines. As the sun goes down you take your place at the fore of your craft (log), and shine like a beacon in the night, illuminating the water around you and just far enough out that you can identify trail markers.

The big bird that was harassing you earlier took to dive bombing you for fun until you managed to clip some feathers off its wing with your sword. Showed him.

Otherwise the night traverse is disturbingly easy. Not quiet though. The swamp is loud as hell at all hours of the day and you can hear all sorts of things out there. Rustling bushes, things sliding into the water, things getting picked out of the water and screaming. Elf voices yelling. What sounds like a frog quartet singing a song about... rain? You don't speak amphibian but some of the phonemes are similar. It's a catchy tune though. Pity it's almost drowned out by the lizards snoring on that smoking building over there.

You point out the lizards to your brother and he steers your log toward them. As you get closer the entrance to the buidling they're sleeping on enters view and you make out a great deal of light pouring out. You'd thought that was you. Good to know that despite your glowing like a tiny night sun you're still not making quite THAT much light. The building is also weird since it's made of stone. That's odd for the swamp houses you've seen so far.

Scattered on top of it around a central chimney you see a number of brawny lizard of various sizes snoozing. If the light inside is from a fire, and the smoke is any indication that roof is probably incredibly warm. You hope you get permission to sleep on it.

Log safely pulled up onto the berm you lead your brother into the building. Inside you find a single small lizard throwing wood into an oven and blocks of black shrivelled wood into the fire heating the oven. Weird, but the important part is he's awake. You knock and wait politely for him to give you his attention. Then keep waiting. Eventually he turns to look at you and removes a pair of black lenses from his eyes.

"Hm? Whozat?"

"Hello. We are passing through and wondered if we could sleep here," you tell him.

He blinks and shrugs. "Fine with me, go up and find a space. If boss wants something for it ask him then."

You and your sibling sneak closer and peek into the furnace. It looks like the wood just sits there cooking. As recipes go you're fairly sure that this won't be delicious.

"What's that?" you ask.

"Huh," the lizard looks at you again, he apparently forgot you were there. "Baking charcoal. Can't run out of charcoal, but can't use the oven during the day, so we cook it at night. It's not hard but it takes a couple hours. Then during the day we make metal."

Well, that kind of answered both your questions.

"Have you seen our mom?" your brother asks before you.

"Whose your mom?"

"Kasha," the both of you say together.

The lizard flinches, "Your mom is Kasha?! What the- Nope nevermind. If she's letting you run loose at your age it's her business. She passed this way heading north about a week ago. I sleep during the day though so you'd have to ask one of the others about it."

You nod. "Who is the boss?"

"When you get up, he'll be the one yelling at us."

You curl up near the oven and the lizard, shouts.

"Hey, you shouldn't sleep down here!"

You look at him and tilt your head, confused. "Why not?"

"Because- Um... Well I suppose if you can sleep with all this light then you cans sleep here," he finishes sheepishly.

Does... does he not notice the glowing. You know it's bright in here but you're not exactly subtle. You check your scales, yeah, still bright and orange, the color you tend to have when confused, you notice. He's weird.

Your brother apparently picks up on the reason for your confusion and giggles. "I will sleep upstairs. Less light," he says, then giggles again.

Curling up into a ball around your belongings you let your mind drift off. Today was, something.
