RULES AND STATS: http://pastebin.com/5q9fPFjz

You are KARLA WEISS, a Belkan fighter pilot looking to carve your own place in the skies!

Currently, you were flying in a patrol pattern over the skies of Belka's capital city, Dinsmark. You had received word that One Belka was planning to attack a conference President Harling was attending.

Funnily enough, the girl that gave you the warning was a former member of One Belka, and was actually flying your wing.

The world works in funny ways.

"Loki, are you picking anything up?" You ask for what must be the millionth time. You look down as you lazily circle over Dinsmark's Capitol building, where the conference was taking place. Down below, you could see crowds of people gathered, either to spectate or protest or both.

"Nothing out of the ordinary." Loki sighs. "Like the other million times you asked."

"You know, there's the chance they might use stealth bombers." Lilian says. "Remember when Yuktobania tried to sneak attack the former Vice President's rally?"

"Buncha cowards." Lara grunts. "I wonder how they can feel good shooting up something that can't shoot back."

"Milly, do you know if OB has stealth bombers?" You ask your temporary wingmate.

"Um, I don't really have contact with the other squadrons, since we're treated as cells, but One Belka's got a little bit of everything so I wouldn't put it past them." Milly says uncertainly.

"Maybe we should extend our perimeter?" Amy suggests.

Wait a minute, if Milly's in our Falcon, that means that she's flying our colours....

Wonder how our enemies and allies will react to two planes flying our colours in the sky? Perhaps they'll spread rumors that Valkyrie's not one person, but two!

"Yeah, that's a good idea, Magnet." You nod. "We'll expand our perimeter. You and Angel team up and I'll go with Stripes and the Nugget."

"But I'm not a-" Milly begins to protest.

"You're a nugget." All four of you say simultaneously, instantly silencing your newcomer.

"Then which areas will we be patrolling?" Lilian asks.

You consult your map once again. To the south were the various mountain ranges that made Belka was rather famous for. It would not be out of the realm of possibility for enemy planes to use the mountains as cover for their approach. However, the moment they crested the mountains they'd be detected, and there were only a few dangerous mountain passes they could pass through to continue evading radar.

To the north was the coast. Naturally, there was not a lot of radar coverage out there, and ever since the end of the Belkan War, Belka's navy and coastal air defenses had degraded rather significantly, either due to combat losses or forced postwar disarmament. A good pilot could get frighteningly close to the city before being detected, with the current clear weather conditions, they wouldn't have a lot of cover to conceal their approach visually.

"We'll take the south end." You say. "You two can handle the north."

"Got it." Lilian affirms. "Good luck!"

"All right, Nugget, me and Auntie Valk are gonna show you how it's done!" Lara laughs as she opens up her throttle, the engines of her Eagle roaring and glowing bright orange.

"Heh, let's see if you can keep up, Nugget." You grin as you increase your speed as well.

"H-hey! No fair, the Falcon's only single engine!" Milly protests.

You just chuckle lightly to yourself as Milly struggles to keep up. The Falcon may be more maneuverable than an Eagle, but it would lose out in a straight up race.

Finally, your each the southern mountains. They were extremely varied, from low foothills, to massive peaks that could reach into the clouds. Fortunately, the weather was clear, giving you a clear view of the rocky crags. You could even see mist flowing down from the snow gathered at the peaks of the higher mountains. You could also see the blinking signal lights of various radio towers, meant to bounce signals over the mountains to the rest of the nation on the other side.

But no planes.

"You girls picking up anything?" You ask, checking your radar.

"I got nothing." Lara shakes her head.

"Nothing on my scopes, either." Milly reports.

You review your options. You could continue to stay up high, giving you a better view as well as a better attack position. Then again, if the OB planes were flying through the passes and ravines, you'd need to drop lower to visually confirm.

"All right, let's drop down to check out the passes." You say. "Stripes, you stay up high in case somebody thinks it's a good idea to try and bounce us. Nugget, you're my wing."

"Awwww, I have to pull escort duty?" Lara whines.

"It's an important job." You assure her.

"Are you sure you can trust me on your wing?" Milly says nervously. "I mean, I DID try to shoot you down..."

"Eh, it's all in the past." You shrug.

"It literally happened yesterday."

"Still counts as the past." You chuckle. "Look, the Professor thinks you're a good kid, and he's never let me down yet, so I'm willing to give both him and you the benefit of the doubt."

"O-oh. Okay." Milly mumbles but goes quiet.

With that done, you push your stick forward and drop altitude. Soon you can make out the various ravines and valleys snaking between the mountains, and you narrow your eyes to look for any unnatural movement.

Unfortunately, you don't see anything at all. From what you can tell, the ravines and passes were completely clear. Even checking the local radio frequencies doesn't show any unusual activity. Either they were holding very strict radio silence or they weren't there at all.

"You see anything, Nugget?"

"Just dirt and trees." Milly sighs.

Suddenly, contacts start appearing on your radar above your current position. Shit, they must have been on the other side of the mountains! Now they had position on you!

"Nugget, follow me!" You yell as you push your stick down even more, steepening your dive.

"Are you fucking crazy!?!?" Milly shrieks.

"Heh, you'll never beat me or my wingmates if you're not willing to be a little crazy." You laugh as your Eagle noses down. "Stay up here and you're just asking to get bounced!"

"A-all right!" Milly nods and you see her Falcon tuck behind you. You crane your head back and see missile trails as Lara engages the enemies above.

"Stripes, how many we got?" You ask.

"We got a whole squadron of Terminators up here!" Lara grunts. "Loki, any help coming?!"

"The Belkan SDAF is already scrambling fighters. They'll be there in two minutes!" Loki says.

However, you cut all conversation out of your head at this point, as the ground was getting dangerously close and you had to make sure not to hit it.

You quickly line up your Falcon with the closest ravine and dip in, using a combination of your ground detection radar and pure instinct to keep from slamming into the ground or clipping your wings on the edges of the canyon. Immediately, your radar lock warnings go silent as the terrain blocks your opponents' line of sight for a few crucial seconds.

"Nugget, you okay?" You ask.

"Y-yeah. I might need a new flightsuit, though." Milly grumbles.

"Good to hear." You laugh. "Stripes, you doing okay?"

"Oh yeah, these guys are chumps!" Lara laughs, but you can hear the wail of missile lock warnings in the background.

"Do you need assistance, Valkyrie?" Lilian asks.

No. Full stop.
WW1 was caused by several things, most notably entangling alliances, arms races, pride, and centuries old territorial disputes. And pan-slavism.
None of those are relevant today. Except pan-slavism. But no one cares about that.

Further, nukes do a very good job at preventing a war between the powers. Russia happens to know how to work the system. There will be no WW3 for the foreseeable future unless the Chinese start it.

"Negative, they might try pincering us." You warn as you slowly weave your Eagle through the winding canyon. "Hold position and keep an eye out for anybody trying to be sneaky."

"Roger that."

At this point, a squadron of Belkan Flankers had arrived to deal with the Terminators, of which Lara had already shot two down despite being heavily outnumbered at the opening stages of the dogfight.

"Hey, Valk, Nugget ,you gonna join in on the fun?" She laughs.

You glance at your radar. No new contacts yet. However, if this truly was going to be an attack on the conference, they'd need bombers or attack craft to carry it out. From what you can tell, the Terminators weren't kitted out for ground attack.

Up above, you could see smoke trails crisscrossing the sky, coming from both missiles and damaged or destroyed planes. It looked to be a serious furball out there, but you can't help but feel that those Terminators were just a distraction. With the Terminators distracted by Lara and the Belkan fighters, you feel it's safe enough to pull out of the ravine and gain some altitude.

Their political capital is shot. They haven't the economy to support themselves, they don't have any kind of hard currency necessary to keep themselves afloat a while longer. Literally the only thing keeping the Russian bear churning at this point is belief in Mother Russia, Comrade Putin, and the righteousness of their cause.

Let's put it this way: Their military has to modernize one system at a time, because they can't support the shit necessary to modernize more than one thing at a time. Their CIS is economic in nature, and do you honestly think for a minute any one of those nations isn't waiting to leave at the first opportunity? Russia has zero allies worth mentioning.

The only thing their posturing and saber rattling has done has imparted to the nations of NATO and nations considering NATO the fact that NATO is still very fucking relevant in today's world.

The ONLY thing that makes Russia still a threat to anyone beyond third world tin-pot dictatorships and their own citizens is the nuclear arsenal the Soviet Union left behind.

In short summation: Kindly go fuck yourself.

"Let's hit those bombers!" You say to Milly. "They're the more dangerous planes!"

"Roger that." Milly nods as she opens up her throttle to intercept. "We gonna do this with missiles or guns?"

You pause to think about this for a moment. Missiles would allow you to engage from a longer range, but that damn stealth would make it harder to acquire a lock and if you missed, your presence would be given away. On the other hand, guns would be more accurate, but at that point you'd be in the middle of a swarm of very angry Silent Eagles...

Fluff, bro, dude, guy, you're cool and all, but sometimes you say things that literally make my brain want to implode. I wouldn't be so sore about this if I hadn't spent a week or two getting SCREAMED at by fucking middle-aged morons who thought my opinion that we should be doing everything possible to help the Ukraine make Russia fuck off was insane, there was nothing we could do because it'd be INSTANT NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST WAR. As if it was still the fucking 70s, and Russia still had the money to maintain even a fraction of the missiles required to not get horrifically curbstomped. Without even talking about the actual working missile defense system we have. In short? This kind of ignorance is prevalent amongst real nose-breathing adults with voter cards, so I feel a responsibility to stomp it the fuck out as soon as possible.

So, tl;dr your analysis is fucking retarded. Recall, if you will, December 6th, 1941. The leadership in D.C. just wasn't there. There was a very loud, VERY vocal group of anti-war people who had no desire to see American soldiers dying for what they saw as a European cock-measuring match. Had the Japanese started attacking European colonial possessions in the East, the same virulent anti-imperialist movement that had screamed bloody murder during the Hawaiian incident and the war in the Philippines would have screamed "WHO GIVES A FUCK" even louder, and the US would have done nothing.

This all changed when the Japanese kicked in our door and cockslapped us as hard as fucking possible while punching us in the nads. What this did was, it pissed people the fuck off. It MADE it America's war, and gave Americans many, many reasons to support it - and all of it reinforced by the sting of insult.

Why the FUCK do you think Putin's fucking around with plausible-deniable mercenaries and paratroopers that ripped off their armbands? Why do you think he didn't just invade outright, like he did in Georgia?

It's because he is well aware of the cockslap line - the crossing of which would make it a matter of an assault on NATO, the "Free world" that stands in opposition to the "axis of evil," etc. Why do you think Russia employs a literal army of online apologist trolls to flood comment boards - IN ENGLISH - with excuses and bullshit lies about how Ukraine is basically Russian anyways and they totally want it because they dressed like a slut? Which nation's public opinion do you think they're trying to sway? Yeah. Yeah, that'd be us.

And that's because the brief, limited ATTABOY WE GOT OUR REVENGENCE WOO war we would wage would be utterly devastating. When an American carrier air group shows up on your doorstep, it's a lot like a really violent frat party - it doesn't last longer than a day or two, but the destruction is horrible, comprehensive and cataclysmic. And once that beatdown is LAID down, every time Putin opens his mouth to make threats people will start laughing as they remember how deep he took America's throbbing shaft of FREEDOM.

So we don't need the "leadership" in D.C, even though it'd be fucking nice. Even half-measures are more than enough; the US has been fighting a proxy war with Russia for six, seven decades now via arming, equipping and trainin small nations that share our views - and our arms and training tend to be a hell of a lot better. Just ask anyone who's fucked with Israel in, oh, ANY WAR ISRAEL HAS EVER FUCKING FOUGHT.

Yes, Polandball. When you have a superpower providing the toys, and the training, all you need ask for is a body of insane motherfuckers who's souls scream for the death of their enemies.

Go read about the Warsaw uprising, in which you will learn two things:

1. The Poles literally ripped the German army into little fucking pieces using home-made weapons and armored cars they built in fucking garages. Because that's how badly they wanted to fuck up some Germans.
2. The Soviets declined to cross the river as they'd promised, and instead waited patiently for the Germans and Poles to wipe each other out to make their postwar occupation easier. This is in addition to the mass murders of Polish military officers - AND the mass-murders of Polish professors - the motherfuckers undertook after their conquest in 1940, for the same reasons.

Now contemplate, if you will, the hate. The rage. Also, the hate - did I mention the fucking hate? Translate this into "espirit de corps." Multiply by NATO backing and American money and toys, and you have something that would chew through the rotten, worn out joke Russia calls an "Army" in a matter of days. This is an army in worse shape than the army that got its ass kicked by fucking goat-herders in Afghanistan - ten fucking years, in Afghanistan. We kicked the Taliban in the balls so fucking hard they literally pulled up stakes to go fuck with Pakistan, because it didn't pay to fuck with us.

DO THE FUCKING MATH, FLUFF.

Fap Angel, My good bro, I can bet Putin is playing the long game as to not pull an open invasion tactic. But he does have a place where is not going to be easily countered no mater what he does.

If the shit really goes down some how in eastern EU. The I will bet you $10s (or a chicken MRE, your choice)That the Middle east touches off at the same time. People won't care much at all about Poland when the damn oil fields are in danger and the gas prices sky rocket.

I will concede your point that a proxy war with them is the most likely way we will deal with them if at all. After all these years in Iraq and Afghanistan, most of the U.S. is war weary.

For me, I am just fucking tired of cleaning up the messes of other countries around the world. I lost my favorite cousin in Iraq a couple of years ago and I would count my family lucky we only lost him and not more of us. I have worked in my local VA hospital and our troops are treated like shit. I don't want them to be ran though the meat grinder any more for war that are breaking our backs.

I'm sorry Fap Angel. I'm just really tired right now. I get grumpy and all that when I do.

Anyway, When is your next thread then?

Babysitting firebases, for the most part, and training the Afghani army to handle their own shit. From what I hear their primary failing is an over-eagerness to chase down the enemy and shoot the shit out of 'em. The Taliban rely on paying off stupid kids to go take pot-shots at soldiers with old SMLEs and shit; a few years of those little sorties being answered by artillery that actually fucking hits what it aims at (unlike Soviets,) or air power, or TERRIFYING NEWTECH GRENADE LAUNCHERS WHICH KILL YOU BEHIND COVER has... kind of thinned out their enthusiasm.

And you line up a perfect shot right behind the trailing Nighthawk. They don't even realize you're even there, and keep flying straight and level. It's almost too perfect. In fact, they're packed together so tight in formation, the moment you open up with your cannon, all you have to do is work your rudder a bit and just walk your cannon fire straight down the formation, shredding Nighthawks to pieces. In the space of a few seconds, a squadron of twelve Nighthawks is immediately cut down to just one, which is quickly mopped up by Milly.

You actually don't realize what you just did until Milly points it out.

"Holy shit!" Milly gasps. "You just wiped out that whole squad!"

"Holy shit, I did." You blink.

And it was at this point the Silent Eagles finally realize what's wrong and switch on their radars. Your console immediately screams as your Eagle is repeatedly spiked by hostile radar.

All of Russia's bestest best buddies in the Middle East - such as Iran - are already under trade embargos by the West. And not the "Oil-for-Food" kind, where incompetent, corrupt and utterly useless UN officials basically let the fuckers sell oil for cash which they spend on whatever they want - actual, effective embargoes. We get all our oil from the United Arab Eremites, such as Saudia Arabia and other members of the worlds only self-admitted cartel - OPEC.

Check out the Saudi air force:

So, I've got a question: if the personnel are equally incompetent, does the quality of the equipment become a factor at all?
Or does the incompetence of the officer corps make it so that any advantages conferred by superior equipment actually become liabilities due to the tighter tolerances and need for skilled maintenance that such equipment usually requires?

You fire off two missiles and a QAAM. One missile fails to track and goes screaming off in a straight line, doomed to never hit anything. However, your remaining missile and QAAM manage to find their marks. The missile slams right between one of the Silent Eagle's twin engines, causing the entire rear half to disintegrate. The QAAM meanwhile snaps off the wing of a second Silent Eagle, sending it into an irrecoverable spin.

"Shit!" You hear Milly curse. You turn your head to see that her missiles failed to track.

At this point, though, you could tell the Silent Eagles were in a state of confusion. You reckon that one of the Silent Eagles you took down was the squadron leader, which was why they weren't coordinating.

You decide to take advantage of this.

"Valkyrie to Silent Eagles." You say over an open channel. "Get the fuck off my turf. Dump ordnance & RTB, or you're next."

Immediately, the remaining Silent Eagles, with their squadron leader and their objectives down, break off and speed south from where they came.

"Holy crap, they're running!" Milly gasps.

"No reason to stay." You say, and see another squadron of Belkan fighters arriving. You wonder whether the Silent Eagles ran because of your or because of the reinforcements.

"Looks like we're late to the party." The Belkan squadron leader sighs. "Beaten to the punch by a mercenary."

"Oh, we're not all that bad." You assure him, smiling to yourself.

"Valk! You're still alive!" You see Lara's Eagle pull up next to yours.

"Huh? You done playing with your food?" You ask.

"Ha! Bagged six Terminators before they withdrew!" Lara boasts.

"I got two Silent Eagles and eleven Nighthawks." You respond simply.

"Whoa, nice!" Lara whoops. "Ha, no wonder those guys were running their asses off!"

"Angel, Magnet, how are you two doing?"

"Oh, nothing too serious. We sank an amphibious assault ship trying to deploy attack helicopters." Lilian says happily. "Things seem to be quieting down."

Yeah, it looked as if things were cooling down. You didn't see any enemy contacts on radar, and the Belkans already had a number of air assets deployed. Plus, you had used up quite a lot of fuel and munitions at this point. While you still had plenty of missiles, your cannon ammunition was perilously short. However, the conference was still going on. Things weren't quite over yet.

"I think we're still good." You say. "I think we've got enough fuel till the conference ends."

"Assuming we don't get into another dogfight." Milly points out.

"Well, you're free to RTB then, Nugget." You tease her a bit.

"Like hell I will." Milly retorts.

"Well, can't hurt to stay airborne for a little while longer!" Lara agrees.

However, despite your worst fears, nothing else happens that day. Looks like either that was their entire attack, or they called it off when they realized the element of surprise was gone. Also, considering most of the fighting took place outside of the city limits, nobody in Dinsmark was ever the wiser.

"Good job, girls, the conference is over and the President has been taken to safety." Loki says. "You're free to return to base."

"Roger that." You lean back in your seat and exhale deeply. It was over for now.

"Goddamn." Milly sighs. "Never a dull day for you, huh?"

"Damn right!" Lara giggles.

The three of you swing back north, where you regroup with Lilian and Amy before heading back to the airport. Upon landing, Lara is already out of her plane and telling the others about your accomplishments for the day.

"No way, an entire fucking squadron? AGAIN?" Amy's eyes widen.

"I'm not shitting you!" Lara says. "Eleven Nighthawks gone, just like that!"

"Just another day in the office." You shrug.

"So, how did the Nugget do?" Lilian asks, as she turns her eye to Milly, who's now just disembarking from her borrowed F-16.

"Not too bad. She managed to get a kill, but no ace in a day like she was hoping, I'd suspect."

"Perhaps we should give her a nickname? I know she's not made ace, but she won't be with us for long, i believe." Lilian suggests.

To be honest, the Kancolle devs went with the whole NIGHTMARE OF SOLOMON thing because of the fact that Yuudachi was engaged in the Solomon Islands Campaign. The connection between a certain White-haired space Nazi and a kanmusou was made after that.

TL;DR Gundam inspired yuudachi's NIGHTMARE schtick.

"We'll wait till she gets ace." You tell the others. "No sense breaking from tradition."

"Too true." Lilian nods.

"Hey, what's going on?" Milly asks as she finally arrives, pulling off her helmet and wiping some sweat from her brown.

"Nothing much." You respond. "So how did you like flying with us?"

"Pretty fun, actually." Milly smiles. "You guys are at least a lot nicer."

"Heh, you should totally roll with us!" Lara laughs as she slaps Milly on the back.

"Yeah, well, I think I'm gonna stay in Belka for the time being." Milly grins. "But I expect to be taken seriously when I make ace!"

"We'll be waiting." You smile and nod.

"Ah, Karla! Impeccable timing!" Your Uncle smiles as he enters the hangar. "I believe this is the girl you want to put under my care?"

"I know it's a huge favor to ask." You say.

"Oh, it's no big deal at all!" Uncle laughs. "I can get her in the BSDAF if she wants."

"You can!?" Milly's eyes widen.

"Of course. There's not much beyond my reach." Uncle grins.

"Well, Milly, I guess this is where we part ways, at least for now." You grin and ruffle her bright red hair. "Don't go joining any terrorist organizations, okay? I'd hate to have to shoot you down again."

"Ha ha, very funny." Milly grumbles. "I expect a rematch someday."

"I'm looking forward to it." You grin at the obvious challenge.
