As Dustox searches for you and releases it’s Poison Powder over the area, you consider your options. You decide it’s best to strike now, while you have the rain and element of surprise.

“Destiny! Hydro Pump! Hit it hard!”

Destiny takes aim and unleashes a massive blast of water at the Dustox. It’s not the most precise graceful shot you’ve ever seen from her, but it does the job. Dustox is caught off guard as the rain empowered stream nails it out of the sky.

You watch as it sails down into the bushes. You’re surprised. You don’t think that quite knocked it entirely out, but it’s probably in really rough shape.

Your thoughts are interrupted as you see the beam of a Pokeball flicker. That must be Arledge, retrieving it.

“Good job, Destiny.” You pet her on the head and think about your next move. Raistlin is out there somewhere, scouting and possibly grabbing the enemy flag. Arledge probably has a good idea of where you’re at now.

The rain pours over you as you stand in knee deep mud

You slather yourself and Destiny in mud before hiding. You’re about to see if you can get some smokescreen cover or maybe ice up the place when Arledge appears from the bushes.

You and Destiny watch. He’s just slightly out of range. He hasn’t seen you, but his eyes light up when he spots the flag.

A voice cracks over an unseen intercom. “Nidoqueen is unable to battle.” It’s the referee! That must be Raistlin’s work. “It may no longer act in this match.”

He looks surprised for second, then his eyes suddenly narrow.

He picks up a rock and throws it hard against a tree in a display of anger. “Damnit!” He yells. “Now I have to go back and stop her!” Prince Arledge turns around and fades into the brush again. You see a sudden flash of Pokeball light before he’s completely gone.

You hear a close explosion from his direction.

“Dustox is unable to battle,” the intercom announces. “It may no longer act in this match.” You can’t help but smile a little.

He’s already seen the flag, and there’s no way he can move fast enough to turn around and see you yet. You have Destiny lay down a layer of smokescreen and just a little bit of ice. You both split up on opposite sides of the flag in the mud and become still again. You’re just a pair of eyes, watching and waiting.

“Stealth Rock,” he yells from somewhere in the bushes. “Clever. But it won’t do you any good. I know you’re using your Alakazam. It won’t stand a chance against my Drapion when he intercepts him.”

A small, purple ball of gas arcs out of the bush and lands in the mud. It bursts over a small area a few metres wide. Luckily, it wasn’t near you or Destiny. It’s just a random shot in your general direction. The rain drags a lot of it down into the mud.

“I wouldn’t want to hit you by accident,” his voice echoes again from the bushes. “Come on out, or I can’t be held responsible.”

You wait patiently. He’ll take another shot, and when he does, you’ll be ready.

“Have it your way,” the bushes yell out.

This time it’s a thick, heavy Sludge that fires from the bushes. It lands nearby. If it was just an inch closer, you’d be hit. Luckily the mud, rain, and smokescreen are all working in your favor.

“Destiny! Ice Beam there! Now!”

She fires an Ice Beam into the bushes where the sludge came from, then she buries herself back in some mud at a slightly different location. Leaves and sticks fly out, but you don’t quite see where the beam lands.

You hear shouting. You can only catch the end of it though. “..of a bitch! That’s it! Get in there and find them or grab it! Either way be quick about it!”

A Muk dives from the bushes and into the mud. You’re about to order another attack, but it’s completely hidden. There’s a vague movement under the muddy surface that rapidly approaches the flag.

“Destiny, use Smokescreen on the bushes! Lay it on!”

As soon as you pop up to give that command, the swamp itself seems to rush up and roll over you. Your nose is overloaded with a horrific stench as mud and goop cover your eyes and then your face. You fall into the mud and a cold, goopy, unseen forces brush over you some more. You bring yourself up for air as soon as you can, but you’re also struggling against the urge to vomit.

You never imagined anything could be so foul. It’s like all the worst smells in the world combined.

As soon as you see get your senses back in order, the flag is taken by Muk. It’s on it’s way back into the incredibly smoky bushes. Destiny looks to you pridefully, but suddenly becomes series when she sees the flag is taken.

“Muk! What’s happening?” The price shouts from the bushes. He can’t see anything.

As if that’s not confusing enough, the voice comes over the intercom again. “The Alakazam is unable to battle. It may no longer act in this match. The challenger may release another Pokemon.”

Muk is spending all of it’s energy in moving as fast as it can. Nibbles veers off to the left in the general direction that Raistlin is probably in. His powerful stomping pushes mud, brushes, and even small trees out of his way without him seeming to notice.

Muk turns around to see what’s happening, but as soon as it does, a huge blast of water hits it. Boosted by Destiny’s typing and the Rain Dance, it’s a heavy blow! Muk is pushed back into the brush and out of sight! Damnit!

Boom! A sudden explosion strikes. That must be the Stealth Rock again! You see the flag shoot out of the smoke and brush and up into the air.

“Muk is unable to battle.” The intercom announces.

You hear a shout from surprisingly close, but you can’t see it because of all the smoke. “Scolipede! Go get it!”

Nibbles comes barreling over a tree. He rears up in preparation for his attack. You grab onto him and climb aboard. You quickly tear a shred of that old tank top into a rough approximation.

You hear Arledge close by. “Earthquake? Are you insane? It’ll hit everyth-”

Schooom! A mighty Earthquake rocks the ground. Smoke clears just enough to see Arledge be narrowly missed by the attack. Unfortunately you see Scolipede avoid the attack too. Destiny seems unfazed as well. It looks like everyone was missed through some miracle in the heavy smoke cloud.

Scolipede scrambles for the flag in a sudden clearing of smoke. As soon as it approaches, another heavy goat of water strikes it. It’s a critical hit! Scolipede vanishes into the smoke. You quickly toss the fake flag out as the smoke washes over the area again.

The intercom sounds off again. “Scolipede is unable to battle.”

“You brutish simpleton! Crobat! Go!” Arledge’s smokey surroundings are lit up by the light of another Pokeball. “We just need to take it back. We’re trained for speed and stealth! Your knockouts are meaningless!”

The rain has faded.

“Nibbles, come back.” You retrieve your Pokemon.

“Take a shot at me, will you?” Arledge yells. “Crobat! Come around and Air Cutter! Go wide!”

Both you and Destiny are struck by powerful slices of wind. Destiny suffers a critical hit (94) and a sharp cut runs across your torso and upper arm and sends you to the ground (75). It stings like hell.

“Trunks! Go after the enemy flag!" You struggle to your feet. "Use Phantom Force!” Trunks nods and takes off.

“Drapion! Be ready for it!” He shouts into the distance. “You Imbecile! I hope you learned your lesson. Attack me and I’ll respond in kind!” His voice cracks.

It’s the only blow to land on Destiny so far. She’s hurt, but not out. Crobat is swooping after one of the flags. You can’t tell which one in the smoke

“Drapion knows to use Acupressure any time it’s left waiting,” Arledge announces. “There’s no way you can get the flag from him. And even if you do, it won’t be in time! Nothing is faster than Crobat!”

He seems incredibly please with himself. He hasn’t noticed that the real flag is right behind him.

He does have a point though. That Drapion looks like it’s incredibly pumped!

Arledge laughs in confidence as you swap.. “It doesn’t matter what you do. Crobat is almost there. They’ll call it any second now. But if you insist on fighting, it’s your choice.”

Destiny let’s loose a hot stream of water, badly burning Drapion, but Drapion leaps through the steaming water, disregarding the damage and strikes Destiny anyway. She takes a critical hit and goes flying back into the mud.

Arledge sighs. “Just give up, Kat. Don’t make me hurt your other Pokemon too.”

Drapion quickly goes back into position by the flag.

“Just give it all up. You don’t belong here.” He seems melancholy and less condescending with that line. He looks just a hint regretful as his eyes fall on the cut his Crobat gave you.

Devon readies himself, waiting for your command. If you use roar, you’ll have this in the bag, but you need to be sure Devon will last. Even with the burn and the damage, Drapion looks tough. He might get lucky with a critical or pull a surprise move.

The best part of the Burn is that its attack reduction applies before boosts so any bonus attack it has from Acupressure is tanked.

Trunks dives in front and summons a solid black shield. It blocks Drapion’s attack and shatters. Devon follows up with a terrifying Roar that sends Drapion scurrying back to it’s Pokeball.

He looks a little impressed. “Well, I supposed I can let you have that little victory. It doesn’t matter though. Crobat’s already there. Look.” He points to the small dot off in the distance. “I’ll admit you did well for a first timer, but this sort of thing runs in your blood.”

A thought strikes him. “They should have called it by now.” He starts to turn around as his hand falls to a Pokeball out of instinct.

He grabs the flag and vanishes. You run as far and fast as you can. You hear a mix of profanities and fancy words from Arledge, a Pokeball releasing, and the distinct sound of a Flamethrower. You hope he’s alright.

WHAM! You’re sent sprawling forward. You slide across the ground as dirt and grass stain your front. Your cut stings and you feel new ones forming. A skittering of branch-legs moves over you and pass the goal line.

Your everything hurts. Devon paces over to lick your face. Trunks looks at you apologetically.

You go to the observation area. Vance let’s you down and says he’ll be back with a disinfectant. Trunks snuggles in against you. Robin’s match is actually visible. It looks like the gym leader has her flag. Robin doesn’t seem all that worried though.

Beatrix takes a seat next to you. “That was a great match,” she compliments.

“Oh, thanks,” you offer a smile as you keep an eye on the screens. What's Robin's plan here? She's probably doing something with Ditto, right? You scan the screens, looking for the clue you need to figure it out exactly.
