You are Giles, Master Thief, babysitter extraordinaire, and professional terrible brother.

Your job has taken another interesting turn, as you’ve now gone from the princess’s babysitter to kind-of party guest.

You began your morning with a bit more than you bargained for: some surprise cuddling, accidental groping, finding out that Melissa knows more about you than you thought, and getting to know more about Marcellus than you really should.

But now it is time for the festivities to begin. The night is firing up, and it is looking to be a fine one.

But whether you’re its grand finale or an errant decoration on the sidelines; tonight we all dance on a Devil’s whim.

A man announces your presence as you arrive. The early bird partygoers pay no mind to him, until they hear Laura’s name.

“Giles, would you please look after Selene for me?” Laura asks.
You’re about to ask why when you see the swarm approaching. “Sure thing. Come on Kiddo.” You say, taking Selene by the hand.

Melissa then leads you over to one of the tables. “She’ll be a while” She says.
“I figured people would want to talk to her, but wow.” You say.
“I told her to get this stuff out of the way when we got here, so this party wouldn’t be as much of a hassle. She opted to keep to herself and hug Selene all day instead.” Melissa says.

“Hey, Selene hugs are important.” You say as you reach the table. As you sit down, you lift Selene up and put her down in your lap.
“Very important!” Selene says angrily.
Melissa reaches down and pats her on the head. “I never said they weren’t. I just hoped that she’d get some of this out of the way beforehand. She has all the time in the world to get hugs, but this is going to be one hellishly long day for her if every single person wants to take up some of her time.” She says.

“Is there anything we can do to help her out?” You ask.
“You’re doing enough already, looking after Selene and saving her from the worst of it when the dancing begins. I wouldn’t worry too much.” Melissa says.

You’re about to say more, when you spot an older gentleman with greying black hair walking up. He’s wearing a simple, black suit, and despite his age there is a sharpness about him.
“Well, if it isn’t Lady Disiera! I hadn’t expected you to be here.” He says.
“I could say the same for you.” Melissa says in friendly tone, before standing up to greet the man.
You follow suit, gently placing Selene back on the ground as the man takes notice of you. “And who might this young man be?” He asks, not so subtly sizing you up.
“This is Giles, an old friend of mine from Tulia who I recently reconnected with.” Melissa says.
“Tulia, eh? One of ol’ Pitre’s kids as well?” He asks
Melissa nods.
“Well then, I am Lester Emmistrad.” He extends his hand
“Giles.” You say, shaking it.
“Selene!” Selene says, bouncing up and down underneath where the two of you are shaking hands, trying to get someone to notice her.

>[1/2]
>>
“And this is… is this the young Princess Selene?” Lester asks.
Selene nods enthusiastically.
“Well, I have certainly been rude!” He says, and then he introduces himself to Selene as well.
With those out of the way, the three of you sit back down.

His name rings a bell, though you can’t quite place it…

“Sorry, I don’t mean to be rude. But I just can’t place where I know you from.” You say.
“Oh, right. Giles this is the old miser from Degri that I was telling you about.” She says.

Ah, the lord of Degri Island, named for the Degran sea upon the middle of which it sits. It is considered its own sovereign nation, but has very close ties with both Alka-Habra and Laust. During times of strife between the two nations, the islanders have always been known to wobble until someone finally forces them to choose a side.

“I didn’t think I’d be seeing you here” Melissa says.
“Yes well, I think King Mercutius might be trying to woo my allegiance.” He says.
“What makes you think that?” You ask.

He scrutinizes you for a moment. “You trust this guy?” He asks Melissa in Alka-Habran. Does he think you don’t know the language? Or is her more worried about eavesdroppers?
“I do, mostly.” Melissa replies in Alka-Habran as well.
He thinks on that for a moment, then addresses you in Alka-Habran. “Word is that the king’s pet champion has some lofty ambitions. Wants to rule the world he does. It’s making Alka-Habra’s high-council a little antsy, and you know how us Degrans get.” He says.
“So the King wants to try and secure your allegiance in case the ‘pet champion’ does indeed try to conquer the world.” You say.
“That’s the gist of it, yes.”

>[1/2]
>>
“Will you?” You ask.
“I don’t relish the idea. But when it comes down to it, you really can’t deny fate. If Roderick is destined to rule, I would rather have my country stand aside than be trampled underfoot. Though I wonder sometimes about which came first, Roderick’s ambitions or Fate’s design for them.” He says.
You wonder what he means, but then Melissa speaks up. “That would be scary, if the fates put that much power on the whims of one man.” She says. You’re surprised, her Alka-Habran has improved quite a bit since you last saw her. She doesn’t even have an accent anymore.

“What are you talking about?” Selene asks. You’d almost forgotten she was there. Of course she’d be confused, all three of you started talking in another language out of nowhere.

“Ha! Ha! Speaking of being rude, sorry about that Princess! I guess we’d best change onto a topic more suited for the occasion!” Lester says.

“So when is the King showing up, anyway?” You ask.
“Whenever it suits his royal arse, probably.” Lester says.
“What’s an arse?” Selene asks.

Lester looks horrified that he said something like that in front of the princess, but you’re used to this by now. You just do what Eleanor does.
“It’s what you sit on.” You say
“Hmmm… You mean a butt?” She says.
“Yes, but it’s not a word you should be saying around other people.” You say.
“Kay” Selene says.

Lester laughs. “You certainly have interesting friends lady.” He says.
“That I do” She replies.

You pass some time with Melissa and Lester giving you a quick who’s who as arriving guests are announced. Then you notice that the band has started to set up.

“So when is the dancing going to start?” You ask.
“Anxious to get the lady out on the floor, eh?” Lester says, pausing for a second before laughing.
“No. Giles has obligations.” Melissa says.
“Ah, regular Brenda’s boy then, eh?” He says. ‘Brenda’s boy’ refers to a man who comes to parties like these specifically to dance with less desirable people. The term came about when an aging lady (Brenda) started bringing young men with her to parties to fulfill her obligations to the strange ‘everybody has to dance’ rule.

“Not really a Brenda’s boy, Lester. If I had to say, he’s probably going to be the envy of the whole party.” Melissa says.
Lester looks at you curiously.

You look at Melissa, might as well let her field this one. You don’t want to come off as egotistical.
Melissa smiles. “He’s been promised Princess Laura’s first dance” She says.
Lester looks shocked. “Well, you really will be the envy of the party. I hope you know how to duel, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone challenged you before the night is out.” He says.

Wow, you hadn’t thought of that. You can fight pretty well, but you fight dirty. Very dirty. A fair duel might be a bit much for you.

“I’m sure that Marcellus would be willing to act as a second. After all, anyone challenging your honour for something as silly as dancing is also questioning his abilities as a guardian.” Melissa says.
“You’d think that Marcellus boy would be enough to keep them off after what happened over in Gasteen…” Lester says.
“Gasteen?” You ask.
“He mentioned that one. It’s the one where he wound up challenging three people to duels.” Melissa says.

Looking around, you can see that the band has finished setting up and there’s a few servants busy trying to clear people out of the dance floor.

Up at the front of the hall, the announcer calls out that it is indeed the time for dancing.

“Well I guess that’s my cue.” You say, standing up and passing Selene to Melissa.
“Good luck, try not to get killed by the angry mob.” Melissa says jokingly.
“It was a pleasure to meet you Lester.” You say, bowing to the old man.
“The Pleasure was all mine.” He says.
As you turn to walk away, Selene flashes you a big smile and gives you two thumbs up. It’s kind of cute how she’s hoping you’ll become her new brother.

Finding Laura isn’t the problem, all you have to do is go where the biggest crowd is. Once you’re there, you see the problem.

You have to squeeze through the crowd, giving the people around you gentle pushes so they part just enough for you to pass. Eventually you make your way to the front, where you find the Princess being propositioned by just about every young man here.

There are a lot of people here who you could piss off right now,you should probably be subtle about this…

… or not. You did come here to have fun, after all.

Stepping to the front of the crowd, you decide to give them a little show…

“Oh, beauteous Lady Laura!” You call out, loud enough for everyone in the crowd to hear. You remove your hat and place it over your chest while you raise your other hand in the air with a flourish. “would you honor me with a dance?” You bow, bending slightly at the knees and crossing one leg behind, you also lower your head and reach your free hand out towards Laura.

After what feels like a very long pause, long enough at least that you were worried that you might be rejected, you feel a hand place itself lightly upon yours.

“Apologies gentlemen, but I’m going to have to take his offer.” Laura says.
You straighten up and smile at her, grasping her hand in yours as she leads you off through the awe-stricken crowd towards the dance floor.

“I had no idea you could be so theatrical.” Laura says. Judging by the look on her face, it seems as though she enjoyed your little performance.

“How else does one ask a princess to dance?” You say.
Laura giggles as the two of you find a good spot.
The music has already started. So once the two of you are in position, you begin.

“So, what’s it like being the talk of the kingdom?” You ask once you’re confident that you’ve gotten into step.

Laura laughs nervously. “Well… it’s…
“Exhausting?” You ask.
“Yes.” She says.

The two of you are quiet for a moment, and Laura looks deep in thought.
“I want to thank you again for doing this.” She says.
“Don’t sweat it. A friend of Melissa’s is a friend of mine. And this isn’t exactly a bad deal for me.” You say with a smile.
Laura blushes. “S-so you and Selene seem to get along well!” She says, making a very obvious subject change.
“Selene doesn’t get along well with everybody?” You ask.
“Not always. For a girl her age, she’s a pretty good judge of character. I figured you were at least a nice enough person when I first saw you.” She says.
“When you first… oh right.” You say. It takes a moment to remember that she first saw you with Selene on your shoulders.

“She talks about you a lot. Apparently you know magic tricks?” She says.

“I’d love to, on one condition.” You say, twirling the Princess and catching her.
“And what’s that?” She asks.
“You have to show me some of yours.” You say with a wry smile.
“Sounds like you have a deal.” She says.

“So where did you learn your tricks?” She asks.
“Back in Tulia. I used to entertain the other kids at the orphanage with them.” You say. You also used to use them to distract people while Klaus picked their pockets, or just use them to pick people’s pockets.

A law abiding citizen you were not.

“What about you? I know you mentioned something about your old guardian, what piqued your interest in magic?” You ask.

“So your old guardian was a mage-archer as well?” You ask.
“Yes, and a good one at that. I don’t know even half of the enchantments he did, and I can’t identify others enchantments anywhere near as fast as he could.” She says.

“Lots of past tense there. Did something happen to him?” You ask, and you immediately wish you hadn’t. Being a guardian is a lifetime gig.
“He… left.” She says.
“He left?” You ask. Alright, at least you thought it was a lifetime gig.
“Yes… It was a while ago now, but one morning I looked for him and he was just… gone.” She says.

You sigh, that story sounds like someone else you know.

Wait for it…

There! The moment comes and you give Laura a quick twirl, releasing her momentarily before pulling her quickly back into step. Laura squeaks in surprise at your sudden maneuver, and you give her a smile.

“Chin up, Laura. Who knows? If you ever end up going on another sojourn, maybe we could look for him together? I am pretty good at finding people.” You say.

Laura smiles. “Thank you, Giles. But I very much doubt that another journey is in the cards for me.” She says.
“Why? Is the world ending tomorrow and I nobody bothered to tell me?” You say.
“No… why?” She asks.
“Oh good. I was worried for a moment there.” You say, taking your hand away from hers and gingerly holding her chin up with it. “As long as all the clocks continue to tick, just about anything is possible.” You say, mimicking a line you read somewhere.

“But what if it’s my fate to-“
“I do not believe the fates would be so cruel as to lock you away in a cage while the world turns without you.” You say.
Laura stops dancing and stares at you, awe-stricken.
“You’ll get other chances for adventure, I wouldn’t worry about that.” You say.
“You sound so sure…” She says.
“I doubt very much that a cage could stop you where a ravaging dragon could not…” You say, putting your hands on her cheeks and placing your thumbs at the corners of her mouth. “… So smile. A frown certainly doesn’t suit you, and tears even less so.”
Laura does just that. “You’re a strange person… but thank you… again…”

Laura looks you in the eyes for a moment, her expression unreadable. But her regular smile returns momentarily. “I should go back. This was a nice break, but I do still have to mingle.” She says.

“Well, you are still the star of the show after all.” You say, hooking an arm under hers. “Come, I’ll escort you.”

The two of you walk back to where you left the crowd in awe, and find them still in awe. You’re pretty sure you can hear some of the bachelors that you one-upped whispering some not-so-nice things about you.

Let them whisper, you’ve been called worse by better men than them.

When you arrive at the spot where you left Marcellus, Laura turns and gives you a quick peck on the cheek. “That was fun, thank you.” She says bashfully.
“If you want to go again, you know where to find me.” You say, taking her hand and kissing it before walking away.

“Someone sounds jealous.” You say.
Melissa’s face turns red. “I-I am not jealous of that display!” She says.

You smile. Oh, this is going to be good. “Very well…” You take up a similar position to the one you had before, and take a deep breath…

And damn near choke on it when Melissa’s elbow finds your gut.
You cough it out as you sit down, and Lester laughs at the two of you.
“You two remind me of me ‘n my wife in the old days!” He says.

And then you start laughing as well, mostly because Melissa’s face now matches her hair. This has the unfortunate side-effect of earning you a few more jabs to the side.
“I’ll leave you two alone, looks like the big guy has finally arrived.” Lester groans as he stands up and mutters a curse about his old knees. “I look forward to seeing you again, lady. Possibly you as well Mr. Giles.” He says with a wink as he walks away.

“Introducing: Queen Frederica Laustright, and King Mercutius Laustright!” The announcer says, and you see every head turn towards the entrance as the king and queen enter.

Melissa recomposes herself. “I was wondering when they’d show up…” Melissa says.
You pay that no mind, though. Your attention has moved back to Selene, still bouncing up and down in her seat on the other side of Melissa.

“What’s got you so riled up?” You ask.
Selene jumps in shock as you address her. “Nothin’…” She says.
You raise an eyebrow. “That didn’t look like nothing.” You say.
“Yeah, why are you so excited?” Melissa asks.

Selene looks ready to explode, and then she opens her mouth and reveals why. “Laura kissed Giles!” She exclaims.
“Wha-“ Melissa’s face returns to the color of her hair.

All three my friend.

Laura, Melissa, and who? Eleanor? Because that's off limits, I thought.

No, not Elanor...
>>

Please don't go that route.

Hopefully only one will be allowed. Harems are unrealistic as fuck and annoying

You're either talking about a little girl, or an unconfirmed crossdresser.

More like older brother route

Casandra? But she's so scary.

Two girls, a harem does not make.
>>
>>38962686
Two girls would be equally unrealistic considering that the best one is the jealous type
>>
“Yup. Right in front of eeeeeeverybody.” You say.
Melissa sits there, frozen in shock, stuttering to find a response.
“Yeah! She kissed him right here!” Selene says, pointing at her cheek.

Melissa switches modes immediately, suddenly getting very angry. “Giles. You’re lucky you still have a promise to keep, otherwise you would be VERY dead right now.” She says through clenched teeth.

“Introducing: Sir Dalen Thanstrum and Eleanor!” You hear the announcer call.
“Ah, one of Laura’s other companions is here.” Melissa says, having dropped the anger and reapplied her mask.

“And Eleanor, apparently.” You say. It couldn’t be the Eleanor you know, could it?

Please just stop. Romance doesn't work because someone always gets this odd idea that a specific girl is best and yet we hardly know anything about either of them, including the "best" girl we haven't seen in five years who we are only slowly getting to know again. I like the idea of ditching the girls and going full thief, but that's not going to happen with all these waifu options, so the safe bet is both girls.

Romancing both girls is a stupid cop-out choice. Having an actual opinion on my favorite girl isn't a bad thing

You sick bastard you just had to remind me of that.

“Come on Selene, let’s go check it out.” You say.
“Kay!” Selene jumps up and skips to your side.
“You coming too?” You ask Melissa.
“No, I’ll be hanging around here for a bit longer. Tell Eleanor I said hello, though.” She says, lounging back in her chair.

Well, you’ll leave her to that then. You take Selene by the hand and head over to the entrance.

As you approach, you hear a booming voice shout. “Is that little Selene? Hahahahah!”
“Dalen!” Selene exclaims, and then she runs over to a man near the entryway. The HUGE man lifts her up and tosses her in the air, before catching her and hugging her tightly.
“Did you miss me?” He asks.
“Mmhmm!” Selene hums happily.

“H-hello Giles…” A faint voice comes from your right, you turn and see… Eleanor? Yeah, that’s definitely Eleanor. This is the first time you’ve ever seen her with her brown hair down, and damn does she ever look good. Her dress is a nice, deep red, and it comes down from thin straps on her shoulders to a ‘V’ over her modest chest before flowing down the rest of her body.

“H-hey… Eleanor.” You stammer out.
Eleanor smiles, and her face turns a little red.
“I told you everyone would be taken aback by how gorgeous you are!” Dalen says. Does this guy even have an inside voice?

Huh. Low votes. Wonder why.
>>
“Yeah, you look good.” You say.

She really does.

“So what are you doing here? I didn’t think you were attending.” You say.
“I wasn’t, but Dalen here thought that was unacceptable. So he invited me at the last minute.” She says.
“And you just happened to have a ball-gown like that laying around?” You ask.
“No, my mother did. This is hers from when she was my age. I can’t believe it fits so well.” Eleanor says.

“She did, did she?” Dalen exclaims as Selene tells him something in a hushed tone. “And here I was starting to wonder if she was even into guys!” Dalen laughs out loud.
“Wonder if who was into guys?” Eleanor asks.

Selene peeks around sneakily, then motions for Eleanor to come closer so she can whisper to her.

“Oh… well that is interesting Selene.” Eleanor says, grinning at you. “I wonder what Giles’s sister had to say about all this.”
“She’s not my sister…” You say.
“That’s not what you said yesterday~. Did something happen last night while the two of you were all-“
“Hello Eleanor.” Melissa says.
Melissa’s sudden arrival causes Eleanor to freeze up, you can almost see the colour drain from her face. “H-hey… Melissa, what brings you here?” Eleanor asks.
Melissa looks like she’s enjoying this. “Nothing, I just came by to grab Giles.” She says.
“What’s up?” You ask.
“People are starting to bug me, and you still owe me a dance. Come on.” She says, taking you by the hand and leading you off.

That's all for tonight! I hope you all still enjoy reading this as much as I enjoy writing it!

Next thread will be on Saturday, depending on how things go on this end. If not then it will be Sunday for sure.

As usual I'll be sticking around if anyone has questions. I'll be sure to answer them if they aren't too spoilery.
>>
>>38963357
Thank's for running!
>>
>>38963357
thanks for the thread

I'm curious how much of Giles's personality had you worked out ahead of time and how much has been shaped by the votes?
>>
>>38963560
I was always going to be flexible with Giles's character. He never really had a set attitude in my mind, which plays into his character a bit.

That'll probably make more sense later.
