You paddle along sedately down the watery course auntie indicated would lead to mom. The log your brother found remains a serviceable ride, though you're not sure if it's faster or not. And for now the current is not fighting your forward progress. You pass the time by getting into a staring contest with a giant rat that decided to hitch a ride.

Twenty minutes after the first giant rat thing climbed aboard another furry lump appears in the water. Like the last one it swims alongside your log for a while before climbing aboard. Grand rat total 2.

Picking a fight with two giant rats seems a bit premature in this venture. You haven't noticed any increased difficulty in pushing the log so they're really not hurting anything. Also you remember that your brother is on the front of the log with all your gear. Including your sword. You decide to leave them be.

Minutes tick by and another furry lump appears in the water, and before that one can even finish climbing up o the log, another appears.

>Alright, this is getting out of claw. Everybody off the log!

When the fourth rat tries to climb onto your log and nearly unseats your brother you decide enough is enough. You steer the log off to one side, weaving a bit to get around what is turning into a flotilla of fuury lumps in the water all waiting for a turn on the log. You find a good spot and get your log wedged up against shore.

The rats look at you with beady eyes and seem to wait expectantly for you to continue. Instead you pull yourself out of the water and gently climb up on top of one of them. The basking isn't great by the waterline, too much shade, but you think you're getting your point across. After several minutes of fruitless waiting you notice the lumps in the water starting to make landfall and disappear into the swamp. In less than a minute they've gone and you're suddenly unseated back into the water by your new chair taking his leave. You look at your brother and he snickers into his hand.

"That was clever," he says through his giggles. "I woulds have just attacked them."

"There were too many for that," you say defensively, wringing the water off of yourself. "This was safer."

>Now let's go follow them. I demand compensation for the ferry ride.

"The water is going the wrong way again," you tell your brother.

He looks at the slough you'd been swimming down, now up, and tests it himself with a frown. "What do you want to do?" he asks.

You consider your options. You could keep trying to push the log upstream but you'd probably slow to a crawl. Swimming yourself might be a bit better but once or twice you've gotten the feeling something in the water was eyeballing you and was dissuaded by your log. Land travel isn't anymore direct at this point but it does offer more options for fleeing from fights you can't win.

"Let's walk. We can find another log later, or just swim once the water shifts back to normal. Walking also means we can run from water things and swim from land things."

He nods, unable to find a fault in your argument, and you divvy up your belongings. As you set out you notice your brother again taking care to try avoiding attention and being much more successful this time. It almost brings a tear to your eye. Almost. The thing that DOES bring a tear to your eye is the amount of noise YOU make while trying to move with your oversized shield and sword on your back. You still make good time but you feel like you're drawing the attention of every pair of eyes in the swamp.

You spot one such pair of eyes in the water as a huge catfish swims by and gives you a speculative look. If you had been swimming you'd probably be in a bad way right now. It's pure luck that you're looking at the water for catfish when you notice suspicious lumps swimming near the edge of the water.

You slowly pull out your weapons, holding them is still a trick since the shield is bigger than you are and the sword equally so. Your brother slides up to see what you're looking for, his spear has been at the ready since he insisted on taking point. You call out a hello at the weird spots in the water. You've seen lizards swim and they can look like that. But there was something else that your brain is having trouble recalling.

Water fountains up into the air as scales and teeth launch toward you. Failing to get your shield up saves you as the lower jaw hits it squarely and knocks you clear, tail over teakettle. You roll as you land and manage to come back to you feet by some miracle, shield and sword still in hand. An alligator, ten seconds slow brain, stands before you, at least ten feet long if it's a foot. You spot a bit of blood on the teeth on one side of its mouth and spare a glance to find your brother. He's much closer than you are but retreating as fast as he can with a leg that looks like it got the worst of his blow. He's making his way up a tree and you see the gator shifting towards him.

>>
>>38954849
No, we put the shield on the gator's head, and get in its mouth.
>>
>>38954741
That mouth is a bit too dangerous to leave open, heh. You wiggle forward as the gator turns to your brother and dart in. The shield slides far in to force the mouth open and you dart back out. The gator tries to snap reflexively but its teeth catch on the shield and it can't quite close around it. But the shield does bend...

You switch to two hands on your machualuitl and slash in at the gator trying to get above it or hit the exposed scales around its neck. The gator see you coming and thrashes its head bats you into a tree. It bites again and the shield flexes again.

Your tail screams at you as it takes the worst of the tree hit but you manage to land on your feet and keep hold of your weapon. On the far side of the gator facing you, your brother climbs the last couple feet into the tree and is clear. The gator though has granted you its full attention and with a withering gaze tosses its head, briefly shaking the shield loose before snapping down on it. You shields breaks in half and disappears as the gators mouth closes.

Depending on how thick the tree is they don't have to...

From what i know about aligators we should try to tie up its maw somwhere near th nose and it wont be able to open it...
or was that krokodiles.

The problem is they can death roll and tail slap, and as an alligators strongest limb is its tail... it can seriously fuck you up. (Jaws are the thing a hungry alligator will use in an attack, a scared one uses its tail to attack)
>>
>>38955235
Death Roll and Tail Slap sound disturbingly like Pokemon moves.
>>
>>38955286
Pretty sure tail slap is.
Certain death roll isn't.
>>
>>38955286
Tail slap is a pokemon move and its a shit one... most animals don't weaponize there tails as most animals primarily use tails as a distraction or a balance object. The ones that actually have a utilitarian usage for the tail actually can be quite aggressive with it (iguanas, alligators, dolphins, etc.) In fact, its very likely the rough scales on an alligator are partially adapted for usage on the tail as a weapon, as if they hit someone they'll stick in the wound and create a larger far more painful injury.
>>
>>38955219
You turn around and haul tail up a tree. Then nearly fall out of the tree when your tail starts screaming at you. That really hurts... Still you manage to get up the branches without any gator related incidences. You look over at you brother and he bobs his head at you as he gingerly feels his leg. Below you the gator looks at his two escaped morsels mutters a profanity and starts backing up into the water again.

I assume more on par with a tegu than an alligator tail though, not very hydrodynamic but pretty damn heavy and muscular... also, I assume they don't have something like shatter plates right? It'd be weird if we could sever our own tail.

With an ear turned to the swearing of the gator, you're learning some interesting new words, you carefully move from branch to branch until you reach your brother's tree. Your tail sings sweet agony every time you have to shift it to stay balanced on a branch, and with every tiny leap. You finally make it to your brother and nearly cry tears of relief for not having to move anymore.

"Are you alright?" he asks, gently rubbing saliva onto his hand as you approach, you notice its bleeding pretty well.

"I'm not bleeding, you first," you tell him holding your hand out to see his injury.

He looks at you askance but gives you his arm. The gator's teeth apparently ripped a long line on your brother's arm, and he's apparently not any good at medicine since he's just been spitting on it. You wipe it clean and then push the skin back together before reapplying the saliva scab. A quick check through your bag actually finds a tiny tin of the scab bandage powder and you make good use of it to keep your brother injury closed. He'll have to keep from using the leg much to avoid breaking the seal but the skin should fuse back together.

You feel along his arm and nothing seems to move out of position from where it should be. That's good. Nothing broken as far as you can tell. If something is, the scab bandage should have him holding still enough not to aggravate it. You turn to your own injuries.

Your tail shoots lines of pain up your back whenever you shift your weight and you have a devil of a time figuring out how to turn around to examine it. Most of the pain is just a little ways down past your hips. Finally you roll yourself into a ball among the branches and start feeling down your tail, squeezing gently to find anything seriously wrong. You reach the most painful spot and squeeze.

CRUH-GONK. You feel something shift under you grip and the world turns to pain.
