Slumber leaves you as you're jostles by the movement of auntie untying your siblings and dumping on the floor of your house. The nestbox is gone now, you notice. It will be missed. Your siblings come awake as they're untied and begin milling about, except your middle sister who you're fairly sure has an alarming amount of cat in her judging by the way she hangs from aunties grip like a boneless meat sack without waking up. You patiently wait for your turn, and it never comes, auntie just shifts you deeper into her cloak. You can still see out but anyone not looking for you would miss you.

Your siblings look at auntie with curiosity, while she ignores them in favor of sticking her head out the window and letting out a hooting call, enhanced by the air of her throat pouch.

You remain silent to avoid blowing your cover to the half dozen lizards who already know where you are, even if they have no idea what you're doing. You let auntie do the talking. She explains quickly the varied issues of magical talent manifesting in weird ways and your siblings nod knowingly. Apparently they noticed you were excessively warm on Day 1 and that's why they all slept on top of you. Jerks. There's a general current of interesting when your decision to go find mom is brought up.

"If you wish to help her then I recommend that if asked about her you say she wandered off on our trip and did not come back," auntie finishes.

"That story will hold up?" you ask surprised.

"Little one, the fact more than half of you came back from your first outing would be considered surprising," auntie says affectionately, "All of you returning is almost unheard of."

Lizards laying a lot of eggs at once seems to make a lot more sense if that's true. You'd never really considered that life is just as hard with a better brain as it is without one. Assuming you're not waited on by elves who make your life one of supreme comfort. But you were made to understand by a particularly foul-mouthed horny toad that being worshiped by elves is unusual.

"Is it much more dangerous than staying?" your older brother asks.

"Out of the options she had, this is the most," your auntie struggles for a moment, "difficult." You get the feeling she was finding a polite way to say something else.

"Wanna come?" you ask. Your siblings look surprised and look at your older brother, who apparently is struck dumb by the very idea. "It's an open invitation," you clarify, and now they're all looking similarly pensive.

Auntie shrugs her pack back onto her shoulders and you hear your macuahuitl and crab shield clack together inside. Your siblings remain quiet as they consider. The silence is shatter though as your middle brother jumps up.

"I will go. I am brave and will help," he says boastfully. You realize your encounters with this brother have been fairly limited. Getting to know him might not be bad.

Your older brother looks upset at your sudden volunteer. "I'll go too," he adds weakly, looking with concern at your less apprehensive brother.

"You do not need to come," middle bro protests, "I alone am enough. Even sister may stay, I will find mother.'

"No, well, your sister is the only reason anyone is going anywhere," auntie reminds him, "Two more though... I don't really have time to get extra supplies for them. What you have will be stretched thin."

After carefully considering your options you really can't afford to be reckless. Reckless is basically how you describe your middle brother. Your older brother on the hand is very dependable, even if he's about as stealthy as a windchime in tornado season. Also, you've worked together successfully, sort of.

"I'll take him," you say pointing at your older brother.

"Hm? Which one," Auntie asks.

"Him!" you point again.

"Little one, I can not see you."

"Oh," your scales heat up in embarassment and you clarify, "Older brother."

Auntie nods and your older brother looks surprised, and maybe a little panicked as auntie picks him up. As she finishes you hear footsteps entering the house shortly before Kuru appears in the room.

"Ah, Kuru, good timing," Auntie carefully slips by her, "Please watch the little ones, I have to run and take care of something."

"What? But," Kuru starts to object but auntie is already out the door.

"Bye!" she calls before breaking off and running north.

She runs for about an hour, still using trees instead of swimming with you tied under her cloak before finally stopping. You find yourself and your brother quickly placed on the ground in the middle of unfamiliar swamp. Auntie digs through her bag and hands you the things she prepared for you, along with as much extra food as you and your brother can carry. The belt pouches she gives you are very nice. The edge of the flap that closes it grasps very tightly to the outside of the pouch, you have to fight to get it to open but auntie says that the bag is waterproof because of it.

You rattle a bit with some of the odds and ends split between you and your brother's bags but not to badly. It takes you a couple minutes to find a place to situate your sword and shield when you're not using them. You need to get a sheathe or something if you're going to keep using weapons.

Auntie drills you on a few last items, reminding you how to follow lizard trail markers and the like. She indicates the deep wide stretch of swamp she's leaving you in as the best route to encounter your mom returning on. It's wide, deep, and free of obstructions so she can float her way back south. That's her preferred method of travelling in the swamp.

As auntie is digging through her pack to make sure she gave you everything you step over and nudge her. She refocuses on you again and you indicate for her to bend down.

"Hey," you say, "love you." you wrap your arms around auntie's neck and hug. You've not done this hugging thing before but your brain says this is how it works, you rather like it. You make a point to do it more often

"Thank you." you let her go and you catch the last bits of an embarrassed expression on her before she manages to smooth it away.

She pats you caringly. "Be careful, little one. I will be very upset if you made me waste all the time I did teaching you," she says, harsh words offset by her affectionate tone. "And take care of your brother as well." She looks at your brother who doesn't seem to know what to do with himself. "And you care of her. Lizards are better in numbers. I want you both to come back. If you can't find your mother in a couple of days then come back. Otherwise you may be lost out there forever looking for a lizard who came home weeks ago." She focuses on you again. "And remember if the magic gets worse you can try bothering the witch, I told you where she was."

You nod. "What're the most dangerous things we'll see?"

"Today? On the mountain is the Komodo. on the swamp side are the flies. If you wish to avoid running into them just stay in the water as much as possible. Further out I have not been in the area recently enough to know, and haven't been able to ask anyone," that last bit seems to annoy her. You do know she likes to talk about things she knows about so maybe when she doesn't know it annoys her? That'd make sense.

She looks up at the sun peeking through the branches of the swamp canopy and then shuffles her bag back onto her back. "I need to get going. Stay safe," she tells you, then she disapppears into the water nearby and is gone.

You consider the importance of names for a moment but then decide you can just call each other "bro" and "sis." It's not like you're with a half dozen siblings to make that confusing anymore. There's an odd pang as you think that and you realize that you probably aren't going to see them anytime soon. Weird. Stupid lizard brain emotions.

A quick conference with your brother ends in you both agreeing to take the water route. You're not sure what a komodo is but you are sure that anything that's a threat to you and is related to bugs is probably not a thing you want to meet. You charge him with finding a properly sized log to use to get downstream. That should prevent any large fish from getting ideas about your cute figure and how it relates to their dinner.

You spend the time he is digging through underbrush looking for a stick. You can't give your brother the metal wedge auntie gave you, it's short range and also yours, but you can think of something that might suit him. YOu fnid a suitably sturdy stick, whose sturdiness is tested by whacking it against a tree until a bird's nest falls out. You use the metal wedge to carve a spot for a fairly nice pointy rock you found, you bind the thing in with a bit of wring after pounding it into the wedge and have a serviceable little lizard's first spear. The time spent making your sword with auntie paid off.

[1/2]
>>
>>38897321
[2/2]
Your brother seems quite impressed with it when you give it to him and can barely stop messing with it while you both much on bird eggs. A bit over incubated for your taste. Too much crunch. When a pair of bluebirds show up to protest your eating their young he demonstrates the spear is apparently well balanced enough for throwing by impaling one of the birds with the spear. The other takes the message and runs. You're not sure if this counts toward your bird murder count for the day. Between the eggs and the spear you made killing the parent you're pretty sure it counts.

The log your brother found seems quite serviceable. You're both able to sit on it single file and it floats without rolling. You manage to get a bask in as you float in the weak current of the water path and your brother paddles with his tail.

Downstream a couple hours you haven't run into any major problems. You passed one quartet of fat frogs that looked like trouble, but they'd apparently just eaten if the insect leg sticking out of one's mouth was any indication. They watched you float by on your log without incident.

As the day is growing darker while you serve as a natural lantern, well the sun went behind a mountain ages ago but the sky is getting darker, you notice your log is no longer passing things at quite the same rate it was. You mention it to your brother and he mentions that around the time you switched place he'd noticed it was getting harder to paddle. You pull you log to the side of the path and spend some time tossing bits of wood and very small rocks in to test the current. Surprisingly it appears to have reversed itself from the way it was going earlier. That doesn't seem right.

Paddling is too much work to be bothered doing all night against the current. You work with your brother to stick your log along the side of the water and then start digging a spot into the side of the berm. You give your brother your shield to clear out dirt as you dig. You paw through your things then finally find the rock smokey gave you wrapped in the camo cloak auntie gave you. Or... maybe you just picked the rock up and didn't notice while you were on shrooms then made up something. You're still not convinced Smokey's real. You'll still practice good fire safety though, that's just good sense.

You figure though that since it's shovel shaped there should be some use for it. You stab it into the earth and find it... does alright. It moves dirt, which is what you wanted. Not much more than you'd expect though. Maybe it's not a magic rock and just a normal rock? Whatever you dig with it just fine. After a half hour of work you've cleared out a sconce big enough for you and your brother to spread out in without annoying each other. You even manage to stick you bags in the back without

"Warm," your brother says as he enters the hole. You don't notice anything. "You're warm," he clarifies, poking you, "You're making the hole warm. You nod and pull out your fire stone to curl up with as you watch the water outside your hole.

Your brother gives you an odd look when you get up and exit the hole but nods in understanding when you come back and start wedging the hole full of garbage. You glow in the dark, you'd rather nothing become curious why your hole is glowing. After a couple minutes work the hole is blocked. It isn't sturdy but that really wasn't the point. Clumps of leafs and branches aren't uncommon.

You curl around your fire stone and feel it slowly warming in your claws as your you doze off. You think you hear an annoyed noise from your brother but sleep.

Badgers... badgers everywhere...

You wake up and find your brother gnawing on bear jerky. "Hey." He pushes the bag over to you and you take some.

"What time is it?"

He shrugs. The cork is still in place in your hole so you carefully dig it out and check outside. That's a sun.

You finish breakfast and toss a handful of garbage into the current. Whatever was wrong with the path has reversed itself again so together with your brother you manage to get you log back into the water and floating again. You look at the log, you should probably take the first turn paddling today since he did it first yesterday. The suns first direct rays lance over the mountain and down to you. Basking is really tempting right now.

"Get on," your brother tells you, climbing onto the back of the log to paddle. You give him a surprised look and he rolls his eyes. "Just get on. You can sun for a while and I'll push."

Ah apparently he got you shooting moony looks at the sun. That's mildly embarassing. You thank him and take your position before shoving the log away from the water's edge. You float and bask for a while before speaking up again.

"Thanks."

"You already thanked me," he reminds you.

"No- Well yes the basking is nice. I mean for coming. I appreciate you coming."

"Ah," he sounds embarassed as he speaks, "I was mostly tryings to keep our brother out of trouble."

You look over your shoulder at him, "I'm fairly sure I wouldn't have brought him. He is..."

"Excitable," you brother finishes and you nod seriously.

"Still," you say, "if you want you can go back. I can find another log."

"No," he disagrees immediately, "I should help you too.'

You consider that for a moment and decide to let it go. The sun is shining and you're in a good spot to bask.

You float down the river a ways, eventually you reach a strange crossing, with a large beast moving through it. Its upper half is white and leathery looking, and its bottom half is a brown color... It seems to have been shoved full of caulking. You attempt to steer around it but find that the current is too strong. You brace yourself for impact...

Huh... thats suprising... everyone is fine and there seem to be an abundance of supplies in the water around you and the creature is tipped over and ... oh...

>The wagon has capsized... you have lost the following... 50 bullet rounds, 100 pounds of rations, Jin has drowned, Sheszka has drowned.

It was only ever funny when Papa N did it.

Okay that was entertaining. Still distracting but I like it.

Eh, I'll stop shitposting here and keep my cancer posts for elsewhere, I just really wanted to make an oregon trail joke while I was on the idea. I also seriously hope REQM makes a series of

You switch places with your brother and are once again swimming when you notice that you've slowed down again. A quick test shows the current has not reversed but the water is pretty still. That's going to get annoying. Still, you're on a schedule so you press on. Worries about which way the water is flowing can arise when it's actually flowing the wrong way.

As the going gets steadily more annoying, and your mind more filled with half remembered swear words from your iguana days, your thoughts are interrupted by a furry bump in the water. It swims along side you for a distance before turning and climbing onto your log.

That is the biggest rat you've ever seen.

nutria are good eating, but they also tend to be a predator magnet, meaning we could quite easily let it swim alongside and act as a honeypot to detect actually dangerous animals (nutria are herbivores I think, I'll activate googlefu now)

Confirmed, Nutria are herbivores that feed on plants.

Guys I hate to do it but I've got to call the thread here. I just got some stuff that's basically destroyed my ability to write that I've got to address for reasons.

I'm really sorry I wanted to get further.

I'll check in if anyone needs something as usual.

Eh, this isn't an especially nasty cliffhanger, no worries mate.
>>

Thanks for running! Hope you feel better.

How's our trip going so far? Was the cover a good idea? Are we going to break a damn to proceed through the river?
>>
>>38900692
Nutria aren't a beaver, they don't make dams... Granted its very likely there are ACTUAL beavers here and its quite possible that this may be a beaver as our animal identification skills are probably shit. Beavers are also herbivores thankfully.

Thanks for coming. I assure you the nutria means no harm.

Glad you're enjoying it.

So far you guys are making surprisingly good time. The cover was a great idea though not how I expected it to be done. It did prevent badgers. The last one depends on rolls.

There are beavers at some points. This is not one. The lizard brain is good for identifying most common animals in the area it's born in.

Does anyone know the secret of the twitter list all the cool QMs are supposed to be on? REQM told me to get on it ages ago but I'm fairly sure I failed.

Wait for the weekend quest thread, or head to archive.moe, hit /tg/ then ghost, and drop your twitter in the qtg.
The vampire makes his rounds whenever, nobody actually knows.
