You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

“Man, it is good to get out!” Exclaims Noriko, rolling her shoulders and breathing deeply of the cold air. “I was starting to forget that there were smells other than sawdust and mold.”

You smile a little. Yeah, the Scar is pretty moldy.

The grass bows under the afternoon breeze, still flecked it lingering remnants of silvery frost. You decided that you could do with some time out in the open, and, for the most part, the rest of your crew were pretty eager to tag along. You’re a little disappointed that Gaby and Kevin decided to stay home, but you get it. Gaby doesn’t feel safe outside the Scar, for obvious reasons, and Kevin basically hangs with Gaby. You made a point of going a little later in the day, when it’s starting to get dark and there’s less general bustle, but to no avail.

Lucas, Noriko, Layla, and Laura all came along, though. You’re making your way across the park where you met Peter some weeks back (and dropped a tree on his girlfriend). The sun is drooping in the sky and the shadows of the trees are turning long and sickly. You had something of a mind to find that little amphitheater again, do some playing. You figure you’ve earned it.
>>
>(2/2)

“So… this ampiteatur” – You and Lucas both cringe a little at Noriko’s pronunciation. Her English is good, but she stumbles over certain words. – “is there a play on, or something?”

“I don’t know, actually.” It dawns on you for a moment that the piano might not even be there. “I think it’s, like, a public thing? I think people can hire it out.”

As you approach the gentle decline leading up to the theater, you notice a good number of people milling around, some of them speaking in hushed tones. Voices cut through the low babble as you get closer, and from the edge of the earthen bowl, you can see that a good half of the seats are filled. People cluster in groups, eking away at each other’s warmth, watching the performance taking place on the heavy stone stage down below.

“…thou not lead him through the glimmering night…”

You recognize the characters immediately. It’s an odd play to be running out in the cold.

“Well, it’s not what I was expecting…”

It’s kind of nostalgic, though. You remember being sort of bored with Shakespeare by the time you were out of school – probably because he got shoved down your throat every single year. But it’s nice, and there’s something sort of wickedly charming about the way it’s being played.

“So what?” Layla squints down at the stage, biting her lip comically. “Look at these costumes, they’re awesome. I could do better, of course, but I’d need a whole bag of glitter, probably one of those welding things, the things they have at school…”

“Soldering irons.” Says Lucas, almost reflexively.

“Whatevs.”

You shrug, turning to the others.

“What about you guys? You want to give this a miss?”

“Eh.” Noriko shrugs back, the halfhearted tone in her voice suggesting that she’ll just defer to whatever makes Layla happy. “It seems cool.”

“Never seen it before.” Says Lucas. “We did Lear at school. It was alright.”

You turn to Laura. She glances down at the figures sweeping across the stage, their limbs moving in slow, regal arcs, and for a moment you think her eyes linger on one of them.

“It’s fine.” She says, eventually.

Okay then. Shakespeare in the park it is.

You guys sit down near the back, Layla immediately monopolizing your lap. She’s a goddamn radiator. You’re pretty sure the play is a student thing, some kind of class demonstration or something – the actors are all young and exuberant, a fey glimmer in their eyes that lends a kind of fresh believability to things. On Layla’s insistence, you explain some of the characters – starting with the ‘girl with the best dress’.

“That’s Titania, she’s the queen of… of the fairies, basically.”

“Rad. What about him?”
>>
>(2/2)

She jabs her finger down at the young man in the fetching, almost unbelievably light robes. You know immediately who he is. His attire is the color of autumn leaves and speckled amber, flowing behind each of his exaggerated, lordly motions. A horned crown sits atop his dark head of hair, laced all around by lilies and bright lotus petals. For a moment, it reminds you of your own horns, and you almost panic before realizing that they’re clearly not poking out of your head right now. You guess they must’ve retracted while you slept.

You can feel them there, though, coiled up in the marrow of your skull. It almost feels like it’d be more natural, more comfortable, to have them out.

“That’s her husband, Oberon. The king of the forest.”

Slowly, between the words and the magic, the evening begins to lean toward night. The last scraps of dark blue drain from the sky and the clouds arch aside, opening out into nothing but black. Around you, your friends watch in silence (yes, even Layla) as the play gradually draws them in.

Lysander is speaking of revenge when you notice, or you think you notice, one of the people in the group a few seats to one side – a young girl in a hoodie – staring at you. As if sensing your attention, she looks away, nudging closer to her companion.

Okay, JJ, don’t make a fuss now. Don’t want to ruin a perfectly good night out because you couldn’t keep your paranoia in check. After all, how likely is it, really, that she’s calling the MCA or someone? Or that she even noticed your weird-ass eyes? It’s dark, you probably look like some kind of vaguely humanoid blob of shadow from her seat.

Or, y’know, maybe not.

Cutting out the oration from down below, the thrum of hearts and minds and lungs heaving, you whittle your senses down to a scalpel’s point, driving it into her back.

The results are inconclusive. She’s not saying anything to her friend – boyfriend, if you had to guess. But you’re pretty sure you can hear her texting someone.

Do the MCA have a text line? If they do, you’ve never heard of it. Are you behind the times? Have you become an old codger in the rapidly changing field of grinding dirt in the faces of minorities?

You bite your lip nervously. She could be texting anyone.

Only way to know for sure would be to get closer… but that could blow things up if you’re not just being paranoid.

Decisions, decisions…

It really could be nothing, you tell yourself.

You don’t know this person. Usually you assume that’s a bad thing, but this time you’re willing to make an exception. Sometimes people have surprised you.

You turn your attention back to the play and enjoy the night. Twists turn and hapless caricatures fall in and out of love, and you lose yourself a little while in a world that is nothing simple and complicated. Laura leans her head against her shoulder, watching in focused, barely-blinking silence, and Layla’s heels tap gently at your legs as she swings them back and forward during the exciting bits, and you feel at ease.

Eventually, the play reaches its climax. The donkey’s head is removed and all begins to fade, and the setup for the dream of the title tumbles into place.

>Present Time: 18:15 PM

And you hear heavy footfalls behind you, and you see the girl a few seats along pointing frantically in your direction, and your heart falls. Other people are looking around now, a few of them getting up off their seats – Laura is one of them.

Down below, the performance grinds to a halt.

You turn around, and you see what must be nine or ten men wearing thick body armor and yellow MCA armbands advancing down the stone seating. One of them, his face obscured by the heavy visor slammed down across his helmet, points his taser in your direction.

You hate people.

You fucking hate people. Why do you ever trust any of them?

Photosynthetic Biology
Level 4: JJ shakes off fatigue and illness more easily when under the sun. He can choose to temporarily boost one of his attributes to heightened levels by burning through stored solar energy.

WARP-SPASM
Requires: Level 3 Claws & Fangs, Level 3 Healing Factor, Level 2 Enhanced Agility, Level 2 Enhanced Strength, Level 2 Electrostatic Touch.
Cost: 2
JJ may enter a horrific riastrad, his features contorting, muscles expanding, and flesh producing intense levels of metabolic heat. His blood and saliva become nearly akin to liquid fire. He becomes immensely stronger and faster, but loses all but the barest vestiges of self-control, lashing out indiscriminately at his surroundings. The ability is exhausting and temporarily drops his Healing Factor by a level in the aftermath.

>[X] “Screw you.”

This is total bullshit. You’re not even doing anything. You’ve done nothing.

Next to you, Noriko fumbles to her feet, Lucas managing to spring up a step faster. Even in the corner of your eye, you recognize the motion of Laura’s arms – she’s going for the 9mm stowed under her jacket. The lead officer, lips pursed into a predatory snarl, opens his mouth to bark something.

You can feel his anxiousness and his fear and his hate. You can see it moving through him, in the way he stands, in the way he holds his weapon aloft, brandishing it like a talisman. He doesn’t want to be here. He doesn’t want to be looking at you. He wants to be at home.

And that is inexcusable.

“Screw you.”

Your eyes blaze like stars, and a stream of bright blue light lances out into the sky, slamming straight into his chest. It lifts him high into the air, pushing something halfway between a scream and grunt from his throat. Everything erupts. People shriek and shout in horror, or shock, or raw fright, darting out of their seats. The others react before he even hits the grass.

“Holy shi”–

“Bruce!”–

“Get him, get hi”–

You push off, twisting through the air. Layla barely has time to shriek before you hit the ground, landing next to one of the armored officers, wrenching his gun arm aside. You feel bone splinter under the force of your grip. Taser-bolts hiss through the air, clattering off the stone seat that you occupied a second ago. You feel your anger soar, and the main in your grasp screams as you slam him into one of his friends, sending them both tumbling across the grass.

The remaining seven turn their weapons on you. You snarl, your teeth lengthening, horns peeking through your flesh. Layla buries her head in your chest and holds on tight.

“Hey! Kusottare!”

A burst of lightning explodes into being between you and them, one blinding tendril lashing out across the nearest officer. He goes down instantly, the smell of cooked meat filling the air. His companions stumble back.

“T-there’s two of ‘em!”

“Shit, shi”–

>[X] Dodge, look for an opportunity to escape.

You leap aside as a pair of bolts head your way. They zip by you, sparking fitfully against the frosted earth. You’re so ready to beat these people up. Seriously, you could not be more ready to commit homicide, or at least manslaughter, than you are now. You trusted people and people let you down – again!

Noriko releases burst after burst of lightning. It flows through the air in complex, blinding arcs, almost like a net, keeping the MCA boys from advancing any closer to her, and obfuscating her exact location. They concentrate their fire on you instead, and you weave to and fro between sprays of electrified metal.

Layla half screams, half chants against your coat, clinging to you in abject panic.

“Can we go now can we go now can we go now”–

You will. As soon as you get a moment to catch your breath, you’ll leave these guys in the dust. You just need something to draw their attention away.

That something appears in the form you’d least expect. Or, a form you wouldn’t expect. Ever.

“Thou art a crow!”

Springing from the stage – that’d be, what, twenty feet? More, when you factor in the elevation? – Oberon himself vaults into the midst of the fray. For a moment, you almost forget to move – you’re utterly dumbstruck. His gown flowing behind him, he laughs as he swings his sword (where the fuck did that come from!? He didn’t have that before!) at the MCA boys, one of them going down as the blade arcs across his midsection. There’s no blood, just a surge of golden light where the weapon bites through his flesh, and you don’t smell the characteristic scents of exposed meat.

“Have at thee, knaves!”

He grins mischievously as he lays into them.
>>
I just caught up with this quest, and would like to say " crusty you are the best"

"DOOM SAYS TO NOT EXPECT OPTIC BLASTS IS FOOLISH!"

>>
>(2/2)

I takes you a moment to realize that this is your perfect opportunity.

“Guys!” Noriko and Lucas are staring. You think Oberon might have fried their brains. “Come on! Time to go!”

Making good on the carnage, you run for the hills (literally, the park has some pretty steep slopes). Once you’re a good distance away, you manage to bring everyone into your invisibility field (first time you’ve done that with so many people. You’re kinda surprised at how easy it is), and you slow down a bit, fleeing the park at a leisurely job. You don’t drop the cloak until you’re way out of dodge, moving through the mesh of alleys that run around the main streets of Queens.

You got saved by Oberon, king of the fairies.

God, NY can be weird.

“Christ!” Exclaims Lucas, balling his fists. “What assholes. Are the people here all complete shitheads?”

>[X] You dunno man life is nuanced an’ shit.

Your first instinct is to say ‘yes’. God yes. God, yes, people really are all shit, except for the small number you choose to associate with. Everyone else is total steaming waste and, you know what, it doesn’t even matter that you’re homeless and you don’t have central heating or a job or a proper life, because you didn’t even want to be a part of their society anyway, because they’re dumb.

And they stink.

“Well…” You can’t help but sigh a little. It’s funny, how easily you fool yourself like this. “…I dunno, I mean, sure, someone tried to get us thrown in the camps, but someone tried to help too.”

It’s almost like people are complicated and nothing is black and white and the world is difficult to summarize, or something.

“Yeah…” Lucas grumbles. You can feel anger radiating off him – a familiar anger, a rage at how unfair things are. “…I guess so. No way was that guy a flatscan, though.”

“Definitely not.” Adds Noriko, smiling tentatively, as if trying to lighten everyone’s spirits a bit. “I mean, did you see his pecs? Marvelous.”

“…I missed that.” Mumbles Layla.

You guys amble your way back to the Scar, joking and laughing nervously, still topped up with adrenaline. Eventually, you hit the edge of the ruins, and Noriko asks you for the time.

>Present Time: 19:45 PM
>Hunger Level: 4

“Well… I guess we should be meeting up with the X-guys.” Noriko says, rolling her shoulders slightly. She glances over at you. “You coming along?”

No, no, we make more volunteer mutants, and ask him for protection. He in return can get more allies, and send friendlies to us. (And also handle the fallout)

Its win for all. Humans get superpowers, Magneto gets supporters and sympathizers, we get army of supporters.

All we have to do is convince Magneto, that instead of fighting the flat scans, upgrading anyone who wants to have powers is better, thus proving that mutants are next step of evolution.

As side effect we cure cancer and shit.

Just takes bit longer than his plans.
>>
The description for JJ will have gone out, certainly nokiro as well. New cloths are required eventually, but glasses are needed to stop any normal humans calling our description in now.

Let me take that hypothetical and apply it to marvel verse.

1. A few idiots gob off/tell about how they got their powers, we get targetted, netted and either killed or strapped down in a lab for the rest of our short lives.
2. powered humans go on a killing spree provoking an all out war
3. Magneto tries to speed up things by forcably turning people into mutants, provoking an all out war
4. People track were magneto is getting all these new people from, see point 1. and JJ gets targetted, the ensuring fight ends in an all out war.
5. Magneto kidnaps and imprissons JJ / blackmails him into service.

There are so many ways that it goes wrong.

If you want to start changing the human population you need to limit anti mutant policys and spike the food randomly across the city so it cant be traced.

Getting a third party involved ends in a lab, dead, or war.

So if I remember right the blonde phantom is out of town for the time being and remy is holding down the fort. What are we going to do for some more dosh in the meantime? Do we still have a gig of sorts at the tabbycat? >>38876568
Speaking of New York, do they have all you can eat buffets there? Like a chinese buffet or something? That might be a cost effective way to lower hunger with less spent in total. So long as JJ doesn't get himself kicked out anyway.

1) We take volunteers, or let magneto take volunteers.
2) We hand out fucking apples to them. Most they can tell someone is that invisible guy gave them apples, or better yet disembodied voice told them to eat the apples. Get voice modulator, be invisible.

It ain't that hard.
>>
>>38876630

...Wouldn't Rogue, or someone at the YXM know? Because the Scar really needs help from someone more competent than a crack bitch.
>>
>>38876641
I'd rather increase photo. Lowers hunger and allows us to boost powers with the next purchases.
>>
>>38876630
Xavier's almost as much of a dick as Magneto is.

The only way the plan works is if the fruit from the Joshua tree is an apple, and we switch out Captain America's daily apple with a mutant power one.
>>
>>38876681
I can see that happening very easily when he's at hunger 5 or so.

>>38876730
Well sure, but that's a while off depending on how fast we get points. Going to an all you can eat to fill JJs gut with greasy food is something he can do just about any time so long as he's not busy being Lunar Lizard Lad or something.
>>
>>38876689
1. Thats fine, in principle, but see point 1 again. Volunteer does not = Decent or smart.
2. see the end of my post. Plus no one is dumb enough to eat magically appearing apples unless they are touched in the head. which leads to point 1 and 2 respectively.
>>
>>38876746
>inb4 J Tree fruit is shaped like glasses, tastes like KFC, and the colors on the inside match JJ's eyes.
>>
>>38876746
Would that even work? Cap's sort of a synthetic mutant anyway at this point.
>>
>>38876784
This is why we need magneto. He keeps dumb mutants under control, and has a school for them.

Well same with Xavier, but he sucks dicks.

“…Can I meet you guys a little later?” You smile lopsidedly. “I’d like to come along, it’s just that I kinda need to pick up a new pair of shades before tomorrow.”

“Psht, no prob.” Noriko replies, waving the question off. “Don’t get Bono shades.”

But Bono shades hide everything, they’re great…

“Cool.” You turn to Laura. “I’ll be back soon if you wanna stick with them.”

She frowns just very slightly, her fingertips jerking tellingly.

“…You won’t cause trouble for yourself?”

Hah. You can’t help but grin.

“I’ll be fine.” Probably. “I can always phone you guys if things get messy.”

After a moment of thought, she nods.

“Be careful. There will be a notice out on you.”

“Sure.”

You guys go your separate ways, you heading out toward the high street while they head deeper into the Scar.

Keeping yourself out of sight, you make your way along the high street, looking out for anywhere that looks like it might yield profitable dumpster diving results. Try as you might, you can’t quite bring yourself to steal, even if it is entirely logical for someone in your position.

As luck would have it, you spot an opticians (seriously, heavy score). Sneaking round back, you rummage through their trash, most of it surprisingly clean. There are lots of old shades people have presumably turned in, most of them cracked, snapped, or broken in some other manner, but after a short while you manage to uproot a magnificent pair of reflective lenses. They’ve got a nice blue tint to them, too, kinda calming and mellow an’ stuff.

As a bonus, you pick out a relatively undamaged set to use as a spare. There’s a bit of crumpling around the nose, but that’s all.

And that’s fine with you.

Glancing at the time, you briefly consider hitting a 7/11 before you get back to the Scar, or even checking up on King Oberon.

>[X] Naaaaah, meet up with your friends and the X-peeps.

On second thought, that’s probably a bad idea. You loathe the idea of leaving King Oberon to a potentially sticky fate, but you know how the MCA strike forces operate. You’ve tried to stay as far from their radar as possible, and for the most part you’ve succeeded (until now, pretty much), but you’ve listened to enough stories and watched enough news to have a general idea of how their modus operandi goes. For lower tier mutants, the kind with kind of meh powers, it’s the boys in the riot gear with the big tasers. That’s usually enough. When it’s not enough – then they run into a Gamma or Beta mutant – things escalate quickly. We’re talking real shit here; powered armor suits, psi-dampeners, live fire weaponry. If it’s a high Beta you might see a Sentinel Suit or three.

It’s the Alpha point – the range where you get your mutant equivalents to Wonder Man or freakin’ Black Bolt – where things get gnarly beyond belief. Areas get evacuated, Sentinel legions get moved in, and occasionally state lines have to be redrawn. Of course, you don’t have to worry about that.

Point is, now that you’ve been ID’d as a Gamma at least (they probably pegged Noriko as a Beta), the place will be crawling with seriously dangerous crap.

Besides, Oberon seemed like he could take care of himself, right? He’s probably safe and sound.

Probably.

Pushing it to the back of your skull, you head for the Scar.

We've gotta store up solar energy for that, and so far or appetite has out-outgrown our capacity to store energy. We'd have to eat more and use or solar-paneled wings to really start, but we could.

Photo 4, its the best. Migrates flaw, and temporary +1 boost to any of the abilities we have, and prerequisite for cool stuff.
Also reduces need for food, and we dont get tired as long as we are in daylight.

Also Since we have the solar plating, we basically can fly all day long now.
>>
>>38878987
Photo, AA, and Shadow Field (cheap-as-chips and decent defensive).
>>
>>38879027
Eh, photo lets us make our own vitamins, so long as we keep up calorific and supplemental uptake (e.g. calcium, iron etc) we should be fine.

>>38879040
We have solar paneling as well, so they help allot with photo and hunger.
>>
>>38879009
>paranoid
It isn't paranoid to leave the area when immediately after someone noticed you're a mutant, they started communicating with someone. Given the general feelings around mutants, and the laws in place - it is not paranoia. It's not like we were just risking our own brilliant ass either, it was our friends+girlfriend on the line too.
>>
Kinda want photo 4 for it's benefits alone, however I fear that if we take it then we arent going to be doing much developing beyond druid for a while
>>
>>38879095
Thing is, anon, that's for a base-line human. After our cocoon-time, we're not even a base-line mugga.

Lets solve it now with better food & lots of it, while going for photo when we can.
>>
>>38879163
?
I think your seeing a disagreement between us that does not exist.

We just need lots of food, quality really does not matter to JJ's metabolism any more.
>>
>>38878987
Wings, then photosynth.
>>
>>38879198

Good food helps counteract malnutrition.
>>
>>38879095
Biggest problem is that we don't use our wings.

Also for people worried about mutant control, in worst case can just turn invisible, and fly away. Or drive invisible car/plane.

>>38879127
Its like saying black person should expect specnaz to come after him, if he walks into white neighborhood.

5 people for possible mutant, who is not doing anything? 1 or 2 police officers would be more likely.
>>
>>38879198
Food from a lower-quality source is grown quicker in an environment with less nutrients. Thus, better quality food fills us up more and beats hunger. This doesn't mean $$$ = best, but quality does matter, and that means using our noggin.
>>
>>38879220
JJ is not malnourished any more. Photo makes his own vitamins. All he really needs is the supplement stuff like i said, calcium and iron etc etc.
And a shit ton of calories.
>>38879232
Mainly because 9/10 times, hands are better.
>>
>>38879281

Yes he is.
>>
>>38879232
wings 3 makes wing their own thing instead of being part of the arms
>>
>>38879281
He's still malnourished, but Crusty did say he's been putting on a bit of muscle
>>
>>38879281
Supplements can help, but the best supplement is fresh fruit, veggies, and protein (usually meat). Good fish would probably be worth it.
>>
>>38879232
>Its like saying black person should expect specnaz to come after him, if he walks into white neighborhood.
>5 people for possible mutant, who is not doing anything? 1 or 2 police officers would be more likely.

You know, Im getting sick to death of seeing the term "stealth build", because its used to justify all sorts of retardation.
Stealth is fine and dandy, but it's not going to stop use from EVER getting hit , shot, or cut, and it never has, getting some insurance is the smartest thing.
>>
>>38879598

>>
>>38879742
I get that, but X-points aren't a dime-a-dozen, and I think Wings 3, Photo, and Shadow Field give us more. But that's an opinion based on the incomplete information I have. It would be awesome if Crusty divulged a bit of his crunch so we could solve this the smart way.

>>
>>38879917
I think people underestimate the utility of wings, if the bones in the wings aren't hollow we can essentially have four arms to punch people with, sure we cant hold things from our wings, but if we end up locking fists with someone we can pummel the shit out of their ribs with our wings while headbutting them into submission.
