Last time, on Feral Necromancer Quest: Well, last time you weren't Vlad Tepish. You were Melandie, you tried dealing with some shit, and mostly couldn't deal with it. You got mad a lot and got quite a bit closer to Lathrien. That is irrelevant, however, as we now return to Vlad Tepish. Last time you were Vlad Tepish, you gave bodies to a whole bunch of people you killed earlier. You made friends, or at least allies with a small human camp near your desecrated land. You fell unconscious, and there you were trapped by a great spirit of the forest. He claimed godhood, but your research on whether or not he was indeed a god was inconclusive. Your punch to his smug face was conclusive, however, and you woke up. Three days had passed while you were unconscious. You went straight to researching the spirit. You got some good information on him, including ancient human and elven attitudes towards him. That is where the thirteenth episode of Feral Necromancer Quest ended.

Housekeeping:

If it wasn't clear, you are back to being Vlad Tepish.

Finally

You are Vlad Tepish.

Your Holdings: A renovated ancient Elven ruin. A well hidden and protected cave.

Your minions: 37 normal undead (orcish, elven and human skeletons and zombies, 13 armed with bows, rest with crude melee weapons). Undead orcish shaman, 5 Undead Drow necromancers. Skeletal elk mount. You control 47/60 minions. Your control is absolute.

Your relationships: Lathrien, your apprentice (agreeable), Ragda and Gerda, liberated old ladies of your tribe (friendly(ish)). Melandie, elven huntress (ally). Bathory, your lover in an alchemically improved body (warm). Bound spirit of an elven scout (bound to an owl homonculus). Bound spirit of a gnoll pyromancer (bound). Bound spirit of an orc demonologist (Bound to a dread dog homunculus). Bound spirit of a black dragon (bound). Elven tribe (open diplomacy), Gnoll tribe (allies/treacherous bastards), Large Human tribe (unfriendly), Dwarf tribe (open trade), Drow (enemies).

Your goals: Fix your relationship with Bathory, achieve immortality, deal with the humans, grow your legacy.

You have been out for a long time. You rushed straight to the library to learn more about the spirit that entrapped you, and you have learned some things about it. You have been sitting in the library for nearly eight hours in a row now. Sleep does not entice you, of course, even if it is getting rather late. You have been asleep for days. Plenty to be done.

>You need to ascertain the humans you are alive. Go see the camp.
>The winter has begun. What is more, your undead hunters barely keep up with the demands of your increasingly growing numbers. Deal with supplies.
>Lathrien's likely to want to learn more Shamanism right about now. Go tutor your apprentice

The winter is a long-term problem. You can easily deal with the humans first, and then start thinking about winter. Furthermore, you might have to help them out, so you should check in with them before you start investing effort into resources.

You ride your mount to the human camp. Normally you'd walk such a short distance, but the snow would just get your feet wet and, well, it's just plain cold. You want to get this over with.

The human camp is remarkably organized. The mood is still elated from all the young people they just got back from the dead. Families are huddled for warmth, happily together. Hunts are going well, and their trade with the elves has left the camp looking as prepared for winter as they can be.

'Vlad Tepish! I see you have woken up,' a middle-aged woman says. She seems to be quickly becoming the elder of the tribe.

'I felt I should visit you, just to inform you I am awake,' you say.

'Appreciated. It is getting real cold, but otherwise we are just about fine,' the woman says.

'Is there anything you need?' you say.

'A roof would be nice. I mean, we've all spent winters in the open, but it would make it easier. Other than that, we are good,' she says.

>Easily solved. Have all of your undead tear down some trees, construct shelter quickly.
>You will need your undead for whatever you are going to do to acquire resources. Give them tools and guidance, but leave it at that.
>They have hides, many already have started making tents. They will be fine, if everyone has a tent. Spend some time helping out, no reason to get permanent habitation going on here.

can you build a totem to keep them warm, or to keep food refrigerated? that'll probably impress 'em.
>>
'I would be happy to help. I have books on construction, the advice within them will be useful in making the houses last the winter,' you say, 'And I have enough tools to spare some.'

'That would be a major help,' the woman says.

'Is there anything else?' you say.

'No, not really. Only, if we are building shelter, can we take that as permission to set up here long-term?' she says

>No. You have fulfilled your obligations to these people, and they will be better off on their own.
>Yes. If you are to bring people together, you have to start somewhere. This will effectively add Human Village to your holdings.

I have always felt that it wasn't my place to tell people what they can and can not do. If you wish to set up permanent accommodations here, as long as the land I have claimed is left alone, I have no objections. But you didn't need my permission, I am no elder, shaman, or chief.

>Yes. If you are to bring people together, you have to start somewhere. This will effectively add Human Village to your holdings.

'If that is your wish. I am certainly not going to send you away against your will,' you say.

'The security is kinda top notch here. And trade is great. I doubt many will want to leave,' the woman says.

'If it is so, then you are welcome to stay,' you say.

'Great! So, you said you had some advice about construction. We could go over that now,' she says.

>Just one large, low shelter. It will be the fastest, easiest and take up least resources, while still keeping everyone warmer and dryer than open air.
>A few large buildings, sorted by function, more effective and viable long-term, but slightly more labour intensive.
>A hut or a cabin for each family. A lot of time and labour required, but it will be functional as a permanent village with no adjustments.

'First of all, just the one building would be impractical, you would drive each other mad, and if anything happened to it you would be right back where you started. Making a building for each family will just have you working in the cold for weeks. I recommend building three or four larger dormitories, and maybe a storage building for your food and resources,' you say.

'That sounds reasonable. What of the actual building?' she says.

'It is too late to dig foundations, so horizontal log cabins will make most sense. Clear out and flatten the ground, and build atop it, it is really quite simple, you chop down the trees needed and then...'

Roll 1d20+4 to see how long the building process will take. This is not a timeskip, but it will finalize your interactions with the village for now.

Feral Necromancer Quest: Where rolls are nat 1s and skills don't matter.

Natural 1! Critical Failure! On the upside, you've gained Tutor 1, on the downside,

You think they get it, mostly. You feel it is safe for you to leave them for now. They seem a bit awkward with the tools you give them at first, but most of them would not have used metal tools before now. It is understandable.

It'll be fine, surely.

That dealt with, you return to the ruin. You catch up with what actually happened while you were out. Most of it is not very interesting, but Drow, this far South, certainly worry you. From what you understand there were no survivors, and you hope that's true. You might have to ensure that you are protected from future assaults.

Your own stocks are decent. You could last the winter, but it would get a little tight if spring is late. Also, the vast majority of the food you have is meat. If you keep it frozen it will last the summer, but it will get boring, and plain unhealthy, if you do not supplement it.

Finally, the numbers of your undead have been diminished, while your capability to control them has improved. There is still a fair number of elven skeletons about, you could raise them. You could try to find the drow corpses Melandie left behind and raise those as well. Or you could find someone or something else to kill.

>Getting more undead will be the start of a positive feedback loop. The more workforce you have, the more work you can get done. This is the priority.
>As winter goes on, berries are going to be picked off by birds and animals, tubers and roots will be frozen solid into the ground and animals will die and become sparser. You need to deal with food first.
>While drow have not been very capable of hurting you, you are certain that if they caught you unaware they could pose a serious threat. And you have more enemies than just drow. Security comes first

You need to deal with the food. The other concerns can wait, although not for too long.

You also feel that you should hunt more, if only to get more animal minions. This would be killing two birds with one stone, as you could use the meat and still supplement your undead supply. It will be slower and less effective, but you will get some creatures.

You set the more intelligent undead, the spellcasters, to gather berries, nuts and roots and such, while you hunt with the simpler creatures.

Roll 1d20 for gathering Roll 1d20+3 for hunting/ raising animals.

13! Above Average! You gather some nice berries, you feel like the undead are actually enjoying themselves a lovely, calm task, that does not involve violence. Your stocks are significantly improved, and more importantly, varied.

Bears do not travel in packs! 'Bears do not travel in packs!' you shout, presented with an obvious proof that they in fact do.

There are two dozen bears at least, charging after you and your relatively meager hunting party of thirty. You could stand and fight, but what and why?

22! Success!

'Halt, bears! I know you are smarter than your average bear! Let us have peace among your people!,' you say.

You would look really stupid if they just attacked you now. It really really looks like they were going to. The bear charge stops mere meters in front of you.

The largest, oldest one grumbles. Then it seems to shrink. It loses fat, muscle and hair. Eventually it turns into an old, bearded man. He might have been a great warrior once, but most of his muscle has turned to fat by now.

Oh, of course. These must be were-bears.

You are actually surprisingly okay with that.

I mean really, out of things that have happened to you this is hardly the weirdest.

'The spirit of the forest told you about you, said you were destroying the land. What trickery is this speech?' the bear man says.

>Write-in answer.

Not trickery. I am a necromancer admittedly, I took a very small part of the forest to scare off my enemies, the spirit of the forest took exception despite the fact elvish magic still leaves scares among the land and tried to imprison me. So I punched him in the face. Seems he's still bitter about it.

>>38855017
"Now that's just untrue! My people and I only take what we need to survive, same as any other of the forest's creature, as it is in our nature."

'It is no trickery. The spirit took offence in some of my magic, though I did no more than build upon an old spell left by the ancient elves. It tried to imprison my friends for all times, and so I struck it and ran away. Seems it has not forgiven me,' you say.

'I... I believe you, though I am surprised to hear myself say it,' the bear-man says.

'Thank you for your trust. Do you stay nearby?' you say.

'We travel some, and our territories are separate. As we have a human spirit, we cannot hibernate like true rough furs, so in the winter we gather in a tribe, to better hunt and for safety. We were going to stay not far from here,' he says.

>'There is a human village nearby. They would welcome any trade you are willing to give.'

'I am Vlad Tepish, ruler of the old elven ruin and the protector of the human village near it,' you say.

'I am Karhu. I am the eldest among our kind,' the old bear-man says.

'First of, I must ask if I understand what you are exactly. Are you were-bears?' you say.

'Now yes, we are. In the past great shamans have joined us, but today none we know of have the magic to change shape,' Karhu says.

'Fascinating. I am a shaman myself, though that is not my first focus as a mage. I would like to mention that the human village might be happy to trade with you,' you say.

'Hmm. Something to consider. We do not produce much, but perhaps we can share our kills and finds, in exchange for tales and warmth,' Karhu says.

'You seem curious about the village. Would you join them for the winter?' you say.

'No. We do not get along with humans, or any but our kind. Not for any length of time. We will visit often, however,' Karhu says.

'So, how did you become were-bears?' you say.

'Well, most of us were born this way, from both our parents being like this. Some seek us out, and we can turn a man into a were-bear easily enough, if we think him worthy. As for how it all started, I do not know,' Karhu says

'What is it like?' you say.

'Mostly it is glorious. Warmer, safer, stronger than just a man, but just as clever. We are not welcome in many places, but that is usually a small price to pay,' Karhu says.

'And how do you know the spirit?' you say.

'He comes to all of us in dreams sometimes. We do not know how that happens,' Karhu says.

'How do you feel about bear puns?' you say.

'Many younger bears are okay with them, personally, I find them unbearable,' Karhu says.

'I should warn you before I go, there have been sightings of dark elves in the forest. They can be quite dangerous, if you are not prepared for them,' you say.

'We have smelled something rotten. Thought it was you. Guess not,' Karhu says, 'Good luck in your endeavors, Vlad Tepish.'

That was a most fascinating experience. You feel that you have made the best out of a bad situation, certainly. And shapeshifting? He said shamans have managed to do it before. You can just about conceive how it might be possible, but the complexity and danger of it. No, you will need much more experience as a Shaman before you even consider trying it.

As for now, you return to your hunt.

17! Well above average.

It is early winter, a good time for a hunt. The tracks are clearly visible in the snow, but the animals are not yet dead from the dangers and needs of winter. You hunt without interruption. You see a bear and steer well clear of it. You manage to kill a few deer and a few boar. The deer are useful for meat only, but the three boars can be dangerous enough to keep undead.

You return to the ruin some time later. If you keep up like this for a few more days, your supplies for the winter will be safe, with some spare for emergencies.

You had also considered holding a grand feast in the middle of the winter, to show off your power and have all tribes meet for the first time. If it is an early spring, you think you will be able to do it.

It is early evening, and you haven't slept for a while now. You turn in early and wake up with the dawn.

'Vlad, a human woman is asking for you,' Bathory says, seeing you awake.
'She came here?' you say, 'Through the raised forest?'
'Yes, it looks important, I should say,' Bathory says.
'Must be.'

You meet the girl. She is young, barely a woman.

'Vlad Tepish, someone from the big tribe wants to talk to you,' she says.

>Get on with it. Go and talk to them.
>You have more important things to do.

You have his bound spirit, but you haven't communicated with it or brought him back to life. I definitely forgot to update that.

'I will be there soon. Thank you for the message,' you say.

The girl runs away. It would be quite uncomfortable for her to be here. Even if she was not a little terrified of you. Maybe you should do something about your image. Even with how helpful and considerate you've been, you do tend to come off a bit dark.

Well, maybe it will be to your advantage.

You will meet the man. You refuse to meet him on his terms, however. The new human leadership has been worrisome to say the least, and you doubt that the death of Karrim would completely dissolve the new form of government they seemed to have going on.

You ride on your elk, with an entourage of two ranks of undead on each side, ahead and behind you.

When you reach the human village you see construction under way. They still do not seem to have managed to fell any trees. You are sure they will figure it out.

Aside from the usual members of the village, a man dressed in woolen clothes stands aside from them. With him is a young woman that left the village a little over a week ago.

'Vlad Tepish! I would know how you enchanted these people to do your bidding, and to demand you break your hold on their souls, by the might of heavens!'

Great.

'What? No! Stop! You fiend! Monster! I knew you were a betrayer of light!' he says.

His screams echo in the distance.

'So, can he actually make trouble for me?' you ask the elder.

'Probably not. We tolerate the nutcases, most of us do not much care for them. They keep things running, to a point, I guess. You won't make friends among elders if word of this reaches them, but the people will mostly understand,' she says.

'Fascinating. How is the construction work going?' you say.

This day.

This fucking day.

Surely, something must go right.

Luckily, you put this body together, so you can fix it. In theory. Back on your table it wasn't moving and you had all of your more precise tools. You realize quickly that the difference between medicine and alchemy is significant indeed. You think you might want to research it a little later.

>You have gained Heal 0, and have skill books available.

The kid will keep his leg, and his injury serves as a solid demonstration for the importance of care and safety when working with tools and construction. You did not want an outcome like this, but, while fewer people seem to be willing to work on construction, the ones that do have become much more confident and competent than they were a little while ago.

When you leave, you are confident, that even if it takes time, the village will be built before any of them die.

Bad luck is nothing but random chance. You cannot be overly worried about it. There is much too much to be done for you to hole up in your ruin and not come out until you feel lucky again. Regardless of what you want to take as your next priority, the location seems obvious.

You ask Melandie to lead you to where she fought the Drow, and she does. She stops,

'It is straight that way, Vlad Tepish. You will not miss it,' Melandie says.

This is rather impressive. The carnage is such that you doubt you could raise many of the bodies here. They are just too scattered about. You also feel it is too late for any chance to conserve their intellect or spellcasting ability, if they did indeed have any. Nonetheless, there are eight usable bodies here, which you raise.

>You control 55/60 minions, your control is absolute

You look about for clues as to where the drow came from, or why they were apparently coming your direction. There is nothing obvious.

Hm, curious.

It is a small detail, but one you would not miss. Their feet are covered in dirt, as you would expect, except this area of the forest would have very little dirt. Certainly not muddy clay, not in this weather.

You are far from an authority in the geological makeup of the area, but the dirt looks a lot like what could come from the caves near the elven camp.

Furthermore, you see blisters on their skin. You know Melandie can be rather terrifying, but she could not burn them with her fury alone. You know that dark elves do not bear sunlight well, and get burned easily. This means they have likely traveled by day, and for a long time. Likely longer than it would take to simply come from the mountains to here.

>Whether to warn them or check up on them, you have to go see the elves.

While they have on occasion been difficult to work with, the elves have proven to mostly be allies to you. You should warn them, if for no other reason than to ensure your apprentice and Melandie have a place to return to if they eventually choose to.

You ride as fast as the elk will run in the winter. You've learned to listen to its instincts, still alive in the sinews and bones. You reach the elven camp before nightfall. Your undead will catch up with you in some 20 minutes or so.

You walk into the elven camp, and up to the elder.

'Greetings, elder,' you say.
'Welcome, Vlad Tepish,' the elder says.
'I've come with a warning. Drow have been wandering these forests. I have some circumstantial evidence they might have been skulking near your camp,' you say.
'Fuck. Pardon my language. That is awful, and this time of year. Do you know anything more?' the elder says.

'They died violently, by Melandie's hand. She killed all of them, by herself, while I was unconscious and had left her in charge of the encampment,' you say.

'Melandie? Truly? It is a shame, even if it is impressive, I suppose,' the elder says.

'She did what she had to. The dark elves are a danger to all, especially if they are going to be coming out of the mountains in the winter,' you say.

'You are right, of course. We will double our watches,' the elder says.

You sense something. Your undead, mere ten minutes away from the camp are engaged in battle. You cannot tell with what just now, but you know that they would only respond if attacked first. That means that it couldn't be any of your allies, unless your capability for causing misunderstandings has increased even further.

>Focus all your attention to controlling the undead and making sure they win

'Excuse me, elder, it seems my forces are engaged in battle and I must go lead them,' you say.
'Indeed? Well don't let me keep you, go on!' the elder says.

You mount your ride and rush towards the dead. There is a good number of enemies. They are outnumbered, but still fighting. They are also not outnumbered by much.

As you get close to the engagement you see that the enemies are humans. By the looks of them it is a party from the larger human tribes. Around thirty five men in all, you have the advantage of numbers, easily, but they seem to be feverishly devoted and are causing casualties to your forces already.

they clearly know we're a necromancer.
By this point.
we took care of the large war party. This might be all the remnants of their war potential.

Talk to them, I want one more Nat 1 tonight

I guess it's about time for Vlad to Impale if we fudge this roll

If we g eery a 1.
I wouldn't mind being known as Vladimir the impaler.

'Halt!' You call to your undead. They all stop immediately and the humans, confused by their sudden inactivity fall still as well, if just for a second.

You weigh your options carefully.

'I am Vlad Tepish. I am used to people being completely unreasonable with me. The elves opened fire at me the first time we met. Do you know what I did to them?

I opened trade with them. I took one of their young as an apprentice. I befriended their leader. I made friends with their tribe while enduring massive amounts of them being a pain in the ass.

They were still much easier to deal with than my own people. I give you a chance. ONE more chance. Lay down your weapons and you shall not be harmed. Tell your leaders I am willing to talk.

Fight me and doom your tribe to extinction,' you say.

And with that, slightly early, concludes Feral Necromancer Quest XV.

You got a decent amount of shit done, but you did not actually resolve any major plot elements. I'm going to call this a 2 exp session.

We're getting that shamanism

Seems pretty unanimous. Bank all it is. Fine by me, less work updating stuff.
>>

Does maxing out our primary school of magic make shaman magic the new primary while something goes into secondary?

Thanks for running, dead

thanks for running!
>>

I've been thinking about this. I still have like five threads to decide at least, but that is certainly one of the things that might happen.

Also, since some of those higher tier spells have significant impact on the plot I cannot answer the question fully at the moment.
>>
>>38860352
You could also add a maximum overlevel of 10.
>>
>>38860424

50 bucks say that'll involve an epic, endgame type of quest.
>>
>>38860701
We are still in Volume I of the quest. I might have to do a severe mechanical overhaul between volumes to avoid clutter, due to how quick I've made advancement. There are probably going to be three volumes total with between 20-30 chapters each.

This quest is definitely going to end, and I have a decent idea of how it will end.
